MEASURED DRAWING OF A CROISSANT

How to measure a Croissant? From the bakery, to the scanner, then photoshop; module 1 might seems bizzare. However, drawing the croissant demands more technique and skills than one would think. Firstly, the module introduced photoshop, this is essential for creating an appealing image of the croissant and to improve the hand drawn linework visibility. Secondly, hatching is introduced to create shading and depth in sketching the croissant. Lastly, measurement rules are introduced.

MODULE 1: HOW TO DRAW A CROISSANT

4 • MODULE 1

The making of new Mario world. The new Mario World represents a fragment in Mario’s dream. Mario is trying to escape this world by trying to reach the pipe and avoiding falling down. The idea that falling down is dangerous is shown by Yoshi landing on a cloud and the piranha plant peeking from the mists. However, there are no apparent proof that falling down is dangerous for Mario. The axonometric space is displayed by projecting the two-dimensional images with a 45 degree angle. Creating elements without violating the perspectives are learned throughout the process. Furthermore, the module introduced basic illustrator techniques.

MODULE 2: NEW MARIO WORLD

6 • MODULE 2

The construction of the imagined world. Using set square and T square the given image is projected 45 degree to the tracing paper. The height and length is adjusted according to the given perspective. However, the width is given by approximation; this is due to the nature of projection.

Merging the perspectives. The two perspectives drawn on the tracing papers are merged, facing against each other, to create the final world for the characters.

Inserting characters. Characters are inserted to give a story to the created world. The created world represents Mario’s adventurous dream. The characters inserted are adjusted to the axonometric perspective. Final hand drawn axonometric space

The making of new landscape The paper model represents the natural terrain of mountain areas. Mountain areas tends to have a flat landscape which protrudes naturally towards the center. The flat outer arreas represents the bushlands, the sharp extrusions represents the dense canopy of the forest, and the faltter tall extrusions represents the mountain. The differentiation is shown by using curve attractors to offset the initial points. Then the custom 3D variables are panelled to the points. Point attractors is used on one point on the center of the landscape, thus the pattern follows. The contrast between the flatter area and protrution is sucessful. However, due to the nature of paper, the model is not rigid enough to give the folds and curves contrast.

MODULE 3: PAPER LANDSCAPE

8 • MODULE The effect of changing landscape is visible in this image.

Creating developable surface. To represent the landscape using paper material, a developable triangular surface needs to be created. Other shapes are not developable, thus unrepresentable by paper.

Custom 3D variables insertion. Using the pre-existing points, custom 3D variables are inserted to create the protrution. Using point attractor the effect of changing mountain landscape is visible.

The final paper model, adjusted to represent the original landscape

The unrolled model. Originally in 3 pieces of A1 paper. Some of the panels cannot be unrolled properly without overlapping each other, so splitting some objects are necessary so that the panels do not overlap each other.

9 • MODULE 3

The base and points of the given landscape. Using paneling tool, points are given to create the 3-dimentional protrution on the landscape.

MODULE 4: INVISIBLE CITY Anastasia Anastasia is a city full of wonder which awakens desire. The The interpretation of the city revolves around the idea of city provides visitors with various elements which might fulfil one’s contrast. Where once entering the city and leaving it, one will tell desire; however, the initial impression of this city will be changed after a different perspective. This results in two contrasting representation visiting the heart of the city. Desire would be lost and can only be given by the perspecives and the isometric with notation. It is shown regained once one become the city’s slave. from the movement, feeling and desire of Marco Polo, the protagonist of the story, before and after he entered the city’s heart; it represents the lost of initial desire from entering the city.

The city itself represents the idea of desire once the protagonist enters. Shops are visible, trades are commencing and people from various background are in the city. The pool is visible and people are bathing there. The city is well maintained, visible from the vegetation inside it. The columns are made out of polished limestones, the ceiling is made out of gold and the pots for the plants are made out of emerald. Furthermore, the heart of the city is visible at the distant. All of these elements evokes a feeling of wonder.

11 • MODULE 4

Perspective one: Entering the City Marco Polo entered Anastasia with a sense of wonder, he moved through the city taking a glance at the wares and the people. Once his feeling of desire is awakened, he stared into the distance, then continued hisv journey to the heart of Anastasia.

After the time spent in the heart of the city, the perspective of the city changes. Despite the goods are still visible and desirable, the people has visibly changed. The people of the city had been enslaved by the city, trying to attain and fulfill a higher sense of desire. The lush vegetation had overgrown and wilted, and weeds had grown everywhere. In addition, the city had decayed revealing mossy column, and dirty ceiling.

12 • MODULE 4

Perspective two: The True Essence of the City After spending a period of time in the heart of Anastasia, the protagonist lost all of his desire. He made his way to the place where his desires initially awakened and once he arrived, he realised the true essence of the city. The city had used desire to enslave the people including him.

What is learnt The modules given had certainly made me improve. Module one taught me about projection, an unnatural way to seeing an object which gives a complete information nonetheless. Module two gave an insight towards the idea of isometric and axonometric, this ties in with the previous idea of perspective. Specifically, axonometric is a visionary space where it is scalable and not distorted, however, there is a sense of abstractness in it. Module three focuses on pattern, where it creates a relationship of variant quality based on how they operate. Triangle in particuar, are patterns which are developable which can create something unrepeatable. Lastly, module four taught about framing, the constraining of an individual’s view point; It creates various perception (solid, liquid and gaseous). Additionaly, the idea of field is introduced which is a way of arranging parts into coherent and consistent elements. To sum up, all of the key ideas introduced helped me develop fundamental ideas to understand “design” better. Skillset gained Several skills are gained throughout the modules. Analog drawing technique is improved by introducing the tools such as T-square and set-square. Moreover, hatching and projecting is also explored. Digitally, many design based applications are introduced such as adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Rhino. The construction of the photo booth and and appreciation of photography technique is also introduced. Presentation skills are also gained where one must appreciate one’s own work while still receiving and giving constructive criticism. Lastly, the construction of journal and portfolio is also better understood. Unsuccessful application Out of every module the most unsuccessful application is creating the Mario world. This is because I do not want to violate the two perspective by adding additional elements, thus the created world is not as good as the imagined. Designing a good story to suit the character’s action is needed to improve it, where the current module does not represent the imagined Mario world to the uttermost. Conclusion To sum up, learnt key ideas and gained skillset complemented each other toward my self improvement helping me reach my full potential. While creating this portfolio, I realised the struggle throughout the subject had paid off and it is not something that I regret.
