Training course for Medtech companies, with the aim of educating them on Sustainable Healthcare and encouraging sustainable design of medical products and services. The thesis project is a starting point for a European project that aims to create a digital platform through which medical companies and members of the health system can be educated to be more sustainable. The European project is in partnership with four European healthcare clusters to transform healthcare from the below and change the current paradigm. In particular, the thesis project is carried out with the Piedmontese cluster bioPmed.

“Systema: Systemic Design and Sustainable Healthcare for Medtech Manufacturing” Partners: Politecnico of Turin (coordinator) European Clusters (bioPmed-Italy,NCSHSweden, Stryker-Ireland, MedSilesia-Poland) Purpose: create awareness and train medtech companies on sustainability through a training programme delivered via a digital platform.

Context

Project goal

The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted problems in the healthcare sector that have been present for years but remained hidden: the large amount of waste and inefficient use of energy and resources. The sector needs to move towards Sustainable Healthcare, the application of sustainability principles to healthcare.

The aim is to understand the European healthcare sector and its main dynamics, in order to create a specific training path for Medtech companies, dedicated to Sustainable Healthcare, flexible and suitable for different professionals.

MODULES AND IN-DEPTH COURSES

The programme consists of four modules with different training objectives and outcomes. The training programme is divided into three courses, each with a different level of detail to suit the different professionals taking the course.

Basic course: preliminary and introductory course. Intermediate course: course with a focus on design and co-design. Advanced course: comprehensive course where monitoring requires specific technical knowledge.

MATRIX STRUCTURE

The contents are organised according to a matrix structure to provide flexibility and adaptability to the training course.

10

THEMES

The themes are transversal themes reflecting the complexity of Sustainable Healthcare. The methods and language that best suit the training for each theme have been defined. The aim of the programme is to shift from creating awareness of the topic to putting into practice what has been learned through the concept of corporate responsibility.

Network to enhance slow tourism in Piedmont’s Infernotto Valley, educating a taste for local products and biodiversity, thanks to the collaboration of local actors. The project aims to be a starting point to create a network of cooperation of companies and institutions in the area, bringing revenues to its members and new tourism proposals. The core of the network is based on the partner farm, which wants to be an example for the area and to involve other farms and organisations in the project.

What if the value of a territory was in the way we look at it?

15

Agrifood & Tourism

16

Context

Project goal

The project refers to a young farm in Piedmont, specialised in organic fruit production and attentive to the use of sustainable practices. Its work has been strongly threatened by Covid-19, in particular the farmhouse which hosts mainly foreign tourists. The farm is therefore interested in carrying out sustainability and innovative projects but finds it difficult to implement them.

The goal is to develop a project based on an in-depth view of the situation of the whole system, identifying opportunities and features that are not visible when looking at just one point in the system. SYSTEMIC METHODOLOGY Analysis

Challenges

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

The challenges that the company has to face up too derive from the problems that are generated at territorial level. The peculiar characteristics of the territory give a unique identity to the area, which combined with the specificities of the company allows to define the opportunities to be valorised with the project. Opportunities

18

STRATEGIES AND SOLUTIONS

The solution best suited to the company and its needs is chosen through multicriteria analysis. In this project, economic feasibility is particularly relevant, so the chosen solution must require little economic funding, especially in the short term.

Factors used

The project

The creation of a network of local actors to enhance typical aspects and territoriality. The project aims to support the generation of collaborative projects by creating a contact between actors based on common values, a source of local pride.

CONCEPT

The local network makes it possible to create fertile ground for collaboration between actors and the generation of projects, for the definition of new Slowtourism proposals in the area. Two initial Pilot Projects were studied for the company, which can be used as example projects for the companies in the network.

ten From the basis of the network: the first path Selected partners were already linked to Magnarosa and connected to the theme Aim: to show to other actors the possibilities that can emerge from its future enlargement

Involved partners:

1) agriculture cooperative, 2) educational institute

The project can start to expand: the second path The partners within the project can start to propose additional services Aim: to develop a network of local realities to enhance the territoriality through slow tourism proposals

The project will achieve a cohesive network: a fertile ground to en an e tradition and culture through sustainability and innovation, stimulated by the tourism possibilities of the area. Aim: to achieve a network that can grow and prosper by improving links and the local economy

Cate ories o partners involved: 1) food production, 2) education, 3) catering

20

Development through time The project was developed over time, moving from a micro to a meso dimension over a period of 10 years.

11

The timeline of the network development is detailed more in the short term actions, that is between 2021 and 2024. In parallel, the pilot projects for the company were organised over time. Beer from apple waste is planned from 2021 to 2024 with the production of 3000 artisanal bottles. While the agroecology action is included from 2023 with monitoring and field research phases. STEP TIMELINE In particular, the steps necessary for the realisation of the project in the short term were studied, that is the creation of the first tourist path on Biodiversity managed by the company with two selected partners. The two pilot projects were also timed as they require a number of steps for their implementation.

A practical guide to help people dealing with celiac condition to manage gluten in the home, especially the re-organisation of the kitchen, pantry, tools and food. The project aims to help new celiacs, their families and friends to deal with the new needs of this condition. The guide-manual aims to transform new needs into habits, supporting readers in a clear and playful way in a delicate moment that can be a source of confusion and stress.

Can the right habits fight an ‘invisible’ enemy?

27

Food & Health

Context The project was born during the pandemic, where the concept of “contamination” became particularly relevant in everyday life. This concept and the forced and shared domestic life led to the decision to develop the project on the theme of celiac condition, where gluten is a hidden and imperceptible enemy.

28

The parallelism with Covid-19, an invisible enemy to be defended against too, was certainly a stimulus in trying to contain gluten contamination in a historical moment when contagion was out of our control, both personally and by design.

Question

Advice: with the aim of helping the user to understand how to behave in practice, while also collecting useful tips.
