When healing words : ETHIOPIAN HEALING SCROLLS .

Religious archetypes chase through time and places . sacred images dear to Pagans home found among Christians , Saints and Christian Martyrs are venerated in Cuban Santeria .

Some strong figures - Mother , the Unborn , the Angel come from the depths of time and take shape in different realities .

This is the context of Ethiopian healing scrolls : they are talismans , and they can only make a D채bt채ras , which is Cleric of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church but may be also healer and shaman . Badly considered

by Catholics , Jews and Emperors these talismans were used and venerated by the 2nd century BC until the nineteenth .

Some anthropologists say that those who worshiped them were ignorant.

I prefer to say that they were unpretentious people , definitely " illiterate " but not necessarily less deep .

The healing scrolls are written in the ancient Ge'ez language , an indigenous Semitic language that is 2,000 years old ; Today 's religious language but at the time of ' Axumite empire was the common language .

The t채ls채m served to eliminate a disease and hunt evil spirits and demons from a sick person , in the context of a larger ritual that involved the prescription of traditional herbal medicines and other natural elements associated with a " pathos" that we find in psychotherapeutic every nursing activities in any part of the world and at all times .

Who would feel to say that the same person seen outside a clinical site and no coat or suit operative generates the same feeling of confidence in the potential patient ?

The Ethiopian healing scrolls have an interesting set of features .

These talismans are parchments that were made with animal skin ( mostly lamb) .

In Aramaic -speaking regions the roll is called yä Ketab Branna which literally means " written on the skin " .

The relationship between the sacrificed animal and the person to whom the talisman was intended right from the beginning the preparation of the object : the patient was rubbed with a live animal then rubbed with its blood and guts ; the same moment of sacrifice was essential , because the sufferings of the person were moving on the animal's skin which then was washed , dried , impregnated with ointments to make it soft and robust and finally cut and sewn in order to become a roll . He began at that point the realization of images and words , but perhaps it would be more correct to speak of the written word and painted word , if we want to take back the origin of " word" , which refers to the narration and teaching concepts .

The image About the images it must first be said that they had not the function to accurately depict the subject evoked , but to reveal mysteries and improve the effectiveness of written prayers , despite the figures were inspired by wall paintings and ancient codes .

Images evoked the figures of the Christian tradition : Saints , Prophets and especially the Angels ( Note 1 ) ; Angels could be represented frontally as guardian archangels with swords drawn , or " synthesized " in a face surrounded by eight stylized wings .

Like all Ge'ez manuscripts were written in black ink derived from coal , while the names of the Sacred Figures were written with red ink .

These two colors were sufficient to ensure the therapeutic efficacy of the roll.

The name of the person for which the talisman was made was added at the end of the ritual path , and written in red . The inks were sometimes mixed with plants ritually powerful or sacrificial blood to increase their effectiveness .

Even the backgrounds and frames , often double, served to focus attention on the talismanic figure , showing an instinctive media wisdom ; we find a strong symbolism , on which dominates the Net of Solomon . also referred to as ⌘ , it is a gasped square corners and is surprisingly present in the esoteric tradition in times and places far apart .

Very representing also the eight-pointed star : in his joints were captured and held the demons that plagued the patient .

How does it work Everything is based, says Kristen Windmuller Moon (Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University) on “eye’s power” that can cause the good and evil .

"In Ethiopian talismanic art, the eyes are the conduits through which illness-causing demons leave the body. During the healing process, scrolls are unrolled, priests recite prayers, holy water is distributed, and images are displayed. The talismanic images are seen by the demon through the eyes of their human victim. The eyes of the talismanic figures on the scroll reflect the gaze of the afflicted until the demon flees. This act of reciprocal viewing is key to the healing act, as invoking the names of god alone will not cause the retreat of demons. To hasten the effectiveness of the gaze, many figures are reduced to faces or eyes. These singular eyes do not represent actual organs, but symbolize their protective powers.” ( 3 ) It seems interesting to note this set of factors : images that speak , matter that gives life in gesture, a therapeutic efficacy temporally defined that gives living and earthly substance to the talisman. But the original thing is certainly the tasks assigned to the words , which are not limited to narrate but act , are the essential force to the whole rite.

We can really say that they are words that heal.

Quando le parole guariscono : I ROTOLI TALISMANICI ETIOPI .

Gli archetipi religiosi si inseguono nel tempo e nei luoghi.

Immagini sacre care a popoli “Pagani “ trovarono casa tra i Cristiani, Santi e Martiri Cristiani vengono venerati nella Santeria Cubana. Alcune figure forti - La Madre, il Nascituro, l’Angelo arrivano dalla profondità del tempo e prendono forma in realtà diverse.

Ecco il contesto dei rotoli di guarigione Etiopi: sono talismani, e li può realizzare solo un Däbtäras, che è Chierico della Chiesa Copta Ortodossa ma anche guaritore e in qualche modo Sciamano. Mal visti da Cattolici, Ebrei e Imperatori questi talismani sono stati usati e venerati dal 2 secolo a.C. fino al XIX. Alcuni antropologi dicono che chi li venerava era ignorante.

Preferisco dire che erano persone semplici, sicuramente “analfabeti” ma non necessariamente meno profondi.

I rotoli di guarigione sono scritti nell’antica lingua Ge'ez , una lingua semitica indigena che ha 2.000 anni ; oggi è linguaggio religioso ma al tempo dell’ impero Axumita era la lingua comune.

I tälsäm servivano per eliminare una malattia e cacciare spiriti maligni e demoni da una persona malata, nel contesto di un rito più ampio che prevedeva la somministrazione di farmaci tradizionali a base di erbe e altri elementi naturali associati ad un “pathos “ psicoterapeutico che troviamo in ogni attività di cura, in ogni parte del mondo e in ogni tempo.

Chi si sentirebbe di dire che la stessa persona vista fuori da un centro clinico e priva di camice o tuta operatoria genera lo stesso sentimento di fiducia nel potenziale paziente?

I rotoli di guarigione Etiopi hanno una serie interessante di caratteristiche.

La materia.

Questi talismani sono pergamene, venivano fatti cioè con pelle animale ( prevalentemente agnello ). Nelle regioni di lingua Aramaica il rotolo è chiamato yä Ketab Branna che letteralmente significa “scritto sulla pelle”.

La relazione tra l’animale sacrificato e la persona a cui il talismano era destinato iniziava fin dalla preparazione del manufatto: il paziente veniva strofinato con l’animale ancora vivo, soffregato con il suo sangue e le sue viscere ; l’attimo stesso del sacrifico era fondamentale, perché le sofferenze della persona si trasferivano sulla pelle dell’animale che a quel punto veniva lavata, essiccata, impregnata di unguenti per renderla morbida e robusta e finalmente tagliata e cucita al fine di diventare un rotolo. Iniziava a quel punto la realizzazione di immagini e parole, ma forse sarebbe più corretto parlare di parola scritta e parola dipinta, se vogliamo riappropriarci dell’origine di “parola”, che rimanda ai concetti di narrazione e insegnamento.

Sul piano grafico bisogna innanzitutto dire che le immagini non avevano la funzione di raffigurare con precisione il soggetto evocato, ma di rivelare misteri e migliorare l'efficacia delle preghiere scritte, nonostante le figure fossero ispirate a codici miniati e dipinti murali .

Evocavano figure della tradizione Cristiana: Santi, Profeti e sopratutto Angeli (nota 1 ) ; questi ultimi potevano essere rappresentati frontalmente come Arcangeli custodi con spade sguainate , o “sintetizzati “ in un viso circondato da otto ali stilizzate.

Come tutti i manoscritti Ge’ez venivano scritti con inchiostro nero ricavato dal carbone, mentre i nomi delle delle Figure Sacre erano scritti con inchiostro rosso .

Questi due colori erano sufficienti per garantire l’efficacia terapeutica del rotolo.

Il nome della persona per cui il talismano era realizzato veniva aggiunto alla fine del percorso rituale, e scritto in rosso. Gli inchiostri erano a volte impastati con piante ritualmente potenti o sangue sacrificale per aumentare la loro efficacia.

Anche le campiture e le cornici, spesso doppie, servivano a focalizzare l’attenzione sulla figura talismanica, a dimostrazione di una istintiva sapienza mediatica; riscontriamo una forte simbologia, su cui domina il nodo di Salomone. Indicato anche come ⌘ : è un quadrato ansato sugli angoli ed è sorprendentemente presente nella tradizione esoterica in tempi e luoghi distanti tra loro.

Ben presente la stella a otto punte: nei suoi incastri venivano catturati e trattenuti i demoni che affliggevano il paziente.

Arrotolati e riposti in un piccolo contenitore cilindrico in pelle, cucito interamente o con un lato aperto, veniva portati dal paziente appesi al collo o su una spalla.

Normalmente la loro lunghezza corrispondeva all’altezza della persona a cui erano destinate: quando erano più lunghi avevano la funzione di proteggere una intera

famiglia o una abitazione, ed erano posti all’esterno della stessa su un muro o su un palo. I talismani personali, dopo l’uso, venivano riposti in un tronco per servire in caso di altre malattie o problemi, ma raramente venivano conservati per più di qualche anno. Più abitualmente venivano sepolti l’ultima notte dell’anno.

La preghiera scritta occupava la parte più significativa ed estesa del rotolo: la tradizione magico/salvifica Etiope si basa sulla invocazione dei nomi segreti di Dio. E’ attraverso la conoscenza e la forte, cantilenata e crescente dichiarazione dei molti nomi di Dio che il Däbtäras costringeva l’Altissimo ad aiutare il suo protetto.

Come funziona Tutto si fonda, come dice Kristen Windmuller-Luna ( Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University) sul “ potere dell’occhio “ che può causare il bene e il male . “ Nell'arte talismanica etiopica , gli occhi sono i condotti attraverso i quali i demoni che causano malattie lasciano il corpo . Durante il processo di guarigione , le pergamene sono srotolate , i sacerdoti recitano le preghiere , l'acqua santa è aspersa, e si espongono le immagini talismaniche . Esse sono viste dal demone attraverso gli occhi dei sua vittima umana . Gli occhi delle figure talismaniche sul rotolo riflettono lo sguardo degli afflitti fino a quando il demone fugge . Questo atto di visione reciproca è la chiave per l'atto di guarigione , la sola invocazione del nome di Dio causerà il ritiro dei demoni . Per accelerare l'efficacia dello sguardo , molte figure sono rappresentate solo con facce o occhi : essi non rappresentano gli organi reali, , ma simboleggiano i loro poteri protettivi. “ Mi sembra interessante notare questo insieme di fattori: immagini che parlano, materia che si vivifica nel gesto, una efficacia terapeutica temporalmente definita che dà concretezza vivente e terrena al talismano. Ma la cosa originale è certamente la funzione attribuita alle parole, che non si limitano a narrare ma agiscono, sono la forza indispensabile all’intero rito.

Si può davvero dire che sono parole che curano.

Nota 1) L’archetipo dell’Angelo è presente nel pensiero dell’umanità dalla notte dei tempi: Akero , cioè inviato, messaggero nel dialetto miceneo tra il XIV e il XII secolo a.C. ( Lineare B ); Platone, nel Convivio parla di dáimōn , ministri di Dio, sono vicini agli uomini per ben ispirarli. E’ ben nota la figura di ‫מלאך‬, mal’akh, nella tradizione Giudaico / Cristiana, così come per l'Islām l'esistenza degli Angeli (in arabo: ‫مالك‬, malāk, pl. ‫مال ئكة‬, malāʾika[59]) è un atto di fede e chi nega la loro esistenza è considerato un “infedele”.
