About Italian Cluster Italian Cluster is a trip. It is a research about project spaces for contemporary art in Italy. Italian Cluster is based on the mapping and studying of the Italian project spaces in order to develop a critical debate between professionals who manage, participate, observe, finance and inspire these realities. Italian Cluster’s ambition is to collect contents, both digital and on paper, in Italian and English language, since this project represents the attempt to create a working method suitable to all project spaces, all over the Europe and the universe. Italian Cluster is an independent project that starts from only two Giulias but that bases itself on collaboration and debate with many others. For this reason we encourage those who read us, and are interested in our project, to contact us even only for a chat. Italian Cluster consists of: • Italian project spaces’ glossary • Interviews, dialogues and conversations • Infographics that show the project spaces situation (updated to December 2017) Our survey is articulated through five cardinal topics that constantly recur within the round of interviews: • funds • research • system • history • territory For this reason the Italian Cluster layout allows you to enjoy the contents in whole or following a topic.
us Giulia Floris (Livorno, 1990): BA Art History and MA Curatorial Practices graduate, she has a past in the art market and currently works for the museum program coordination. The love for contemporary art research has brought her to work on a discussion with the project spaces all over the Europe and, of course, with Giulia Ratti. She is the one who has curated the Italian Cluster contents and who has created the network around to this project through a daily and constant stalking. Giulia Ratti (Milan, 1992): artist and co-founder of the artistrun-space /77, in the last years she has collaborated with several emerging artists and project spaces. She lead her own artistic research through an hybrid and experimental practice, that clearly Italian Cluster is part of. She has realized all the illustrations related to the project and, together with Giulia Floris, she has curated the contents.
Interviewees Davide Daninos & Luigi Presicce: Respectively an independent art critic and curator and a performing artist, together managed (Luigi was also one of the founders) Brown Project Space, historical project space in Milan, active between 2008 and 2012. Diego Bergamaschi: Italian collector who has always stood out for his attention to the emerging and independent scene of Italian art. Federico Del Vecchio: Nomadic artist and curator of Flip Project Space in Naples from 2011, he is one of the best people in Italy who ask to how the local dimension is reconciled with an international aspiration. Andrea Bruciati: Director of Istituto Villa Adriana e Villa d’Este, he is a hybrid figure who, within his work as an independent curator, director of museums and art fairs, has never lost interest and desire to deal with independent realities. Michele D’Aurizio: Editor-in-chief of the Italian and international Flash Art editions, Michele is co-founder of Gasconade, Milan project space founded in 2011 whose history appears deeply connected to the emerging Italian art scene. Not surprisingly, within Italian Cluster his name recurs very often. Andrea Rebaglio: Deputy Director of Fondazione Cariplo's Art and Culture Area since 2009. The Foundation represents an important point of reference for the economic support of emerging projects in art and culture field in northern Italy.
Bernabò Visconti di Modrone: Creator of Artshell, a software addressed to artists, collectors and operators of the system whose goal is to support the daily activities of managing works of art. During last years he has dedicated himself to think possible solutions for the art system’s deals. Diego Perrone: is one of the two artists who in 2010 undertook a car trip to Italy to get to know the independent realities dedicated to contemporary art in Italy. From this trip many projects were born and, above all, a volume of investigation and mapping that was fundamental for the research of Italian Cluster. Simone Ciglia, Giulia Ferracci, Elena Motisi: Curators team that deal with THE INDEPENDENT, the MAXXI Museum mapping and research platform dedicated to independent companies. Alberto Garutti: Artist and teacher. During his long and productive career as a professor, Garutti has trained many artists and has been the teacher of numerous groups of students who, right under his tutelage, have joined together in collective and project spaces. Filippo Del Corno: Councilor for Culture of Milan, one of the Italian cities in which the cultural system is better structured. Francesco Lecci: Director of Clima, Milan art gallery dedicated to emerging contemporary art, founded by Francesco in 2015. Antonia Alampi & Giulia Palomba: The first one is art historian, curator and critic, who in 2016 founded the Future Climates platform with iLiana Fokianaki. The latter is a freelance curator and co-founder of the Cultural Cooperative Network. Both of them have conceived projects that focus on sustainability, technology, ethics and trans-national networks, leading the Italian Cluster deal beyond Italy.
