The thesis project is based on a fundamental question: why does an architect, when he carries out a project for a private individual, respond to his needs, while when planning a public space he does not question future users? The work done aims at demonstrating the importance of citizen participation in urban planning.
After an in-depth analysis on the theme of participation abroad and in Italy, on the laws that govern it and on the professional figures that deal with it, the work focused on the historic center of Genoa, in particular on the nightlife that takes place in spaces that have not been designed for this purpose and that are not ready to host the phenomenon.

The first phase of the thesis involved a series of interviews with stakeholders who had already dealt with the topic, in such a way as to understand what the issues had already been addressed and how the participation process could continue. CONFISCATED PROPERTY
HISTORIC SQUARES
Once the most experienced spaces and the needs of the users were identified through the “quizzes”, further analyzes were carried out regarding the events already taking place in the territory, the associations present, the confiscated properties from organized crime and historic public spaces with the objective to redevelop them and give them greater identity. After having set up the identified plans, the possible project strategies were proposed and positioned in the spaces that, following the analysis referred to above, were more suitable. Project guidelines: economy, flexibility and sustainability.
05
PUBLIC TOILETS
First necessity emerged among all was public toilets one. For this purpose, 5 confiscated properties which are located on the ground floor and with suitable areas were identified. This strategy envisages a clearly visible and illuminated access in particularly experienced areas. The interior space of the same is also designed so that they are accessible to disabled people. Access is allowed free of charge through the passage of the health card, the entrance is equipped with a video camera for safety and, for the same purpose, the entrance door allows visibility.
1
TOTEM
A series of needs are also found whose solutions are proposed in a single totem. Information, lighting, garbage, noise insulation, seating, flowers / plants ... In this case two possible solutions have been proposed, adaptable to spaces with different dimensions. The key point of the projects starting from here is in fact the flexibility and the possibility that people can use the installation as they see fit to make themselves architects of the space in which they live.
2.1
This is also due to the fact that there was an enormous diversity in the appropriation of public land during the day and night hours.

ARCHITETTURA 2D: SEDUTE/ESPOSITORI
The first totem option appears to be small and flexible as the various wooden modules of which it is composed can be opened or closed allowing different functions. The second, instead, more rigid, adapts to the larger alleys while still providing the same services.
Infopoint is instead placed in the main squares where people normally meet; provides information on the events of the evenings and at the same time a rest area. The structure, as for the 2.2 totem, is designed with innocent tubes, wooden panels and textile parts that refer to the idea of the sails of a seaside town like Genoa.
Regarding the events, 3 strategies are presented that adapt to different historical squares. The first consists of a single installation which, multiplied, allows the hanging of canvases to create open-air cinemas, volleyball games and exhibitions, in line with the events that already take place through previously mapped local associations.
A 2d architecture strategy is also envisaged that lightly invades the space and suggests possible destinations of use. This combined with benches / displays that take advantage of the support of existing structures. Finally a stage is designed composed of mobile modules for larger squares.

3DFOGTECH
Monitoring System
09
The research project consists of the creation of a structure that can convert the fog into drinking water for locations where it is lacking. This method exploits the condensation of fog through nylon meshes. The system was tested in Chile on the construction of 2d structures on a single vertical plane.
As part of the internship at Studio Pop, a 3D structure was designed on a hexagonal base to exploit the fog coming from various sides. Experiments were carried out using a steam production machine and the use of different meshes. However, the project is still in testing phase.
Some places have been identified to place the prototype following some inspections, for example in the Pyrenees, analyzing the amount of humidity present and locating the suitable site (Montserrat, Montseny and Manresa). My task initially was to create a book of analysis and explanation of the project to be presented to the administrations.
Then I created a series of models in order to define the best structure and then proceed with the study of the water conveyance system, filtering and monitoring. This phase has been carried out through a 3D printed sensor connected to an Arduino to quantify the volumes of water and allow users to have a report via a cellular application.
CONVERSIONE DELLA NEBBIA IN ACQUA POTABILE
The structure is also equipped with a solar panel and weather station with rain gauge and thermohygrometer for analysis and self-sufficiency.

2018
Still as part of the internship at Studio Pop, I contributed to a further project, carried out by Laura Petruskeviciute: Replastico2. The project consists in the reuse of plastic bags that currently cause serious damage to the ecosystem.
In this case, my task was to conceive, design and create new products starting from the material used: notebooks, bags, passport holders, glasses racks, mobile phone holders, cases, coin holders and tobacco racks.
I also created a catalog, an advertising comic, and mapped and contacted designer shops in Barcelona that could sell the products. The campaign itself also wanted to raise awareness of the use of plastic and the circular economy, a theme I felt very strongly.
We carried out a swot survey and we participated in a zero waste event that I sponsored and advertised through a poster. In this context the work was basically branding, graphics and production.

During my permanence in Barcelona I also collaborated with a designer association that mainly deals with the re-use of materials in collaboration with the Municipality and other local associations. The philosophy that guides the association includes open design and awareness of the issues of reuse to avoid waste of materials.
In this case I initially created a series of manuals to be shared on the web page where the furnishings created and the construction methods are presented so that people can build them independently.
I also designed and built a mobile work table for a collective of architects from Madrid (Todo por la praxis) using materials that we have recovered in recycling centers which were previously used by the Municipality during events.
I also collaborated in the organization and realization of some courses on the subject of re-use. In this context, I was appointed as a photographer and report producer, in order to have feedback on the course trend for possible changes or continuations.

This project concerns the designing of a chousingThe main idea was to create a series of platforms / gradients with different functions, resulting in greater privacy as you rise in height. Three “families” of users were considered for the realization of this project.
People with various hobbies / jobs that could perform at home and share with other inhabitants have been hypothesized. For this purpose three spaces have been designed on the ground floor, one for each family, where they could carry out these activities. The remaining part of the ground floor is a common full-height space illuminated by two windowed facades.
At the first level we reach the common kitchen, whose stairs to access the next level serve as seats. The other slopes create the distribution until reaching a personal garden for each “family” and the more private area with the bedroom and the bathroom.
The main objective of the project was to create a large open space to encourage sharing among the people who live in the spaces

The project in question concerns a lot located in the city of Ukunda in Kenya. The goal was to design a school and housing in line with the architectures present. Indeed, it was decided to adopt local materials such as bamboo and raw earth. Added to these are prefabricated CNC elements for the first-floor structure with a simple anchoring system.
First of all the area was surrounded by a wall for security problems, allowing a single access. Secondly, it was decided to place the houses at the rear allowing them more privacy by arranging them so as to create a court. The upper floor is accessed via an external staircase.
Contrary to the usual provision, it was decided to place the common areas on the first floor and the private ones on the ground floor in order to protect from the high temperatures and to create on the first floor an area that was as open and aerated as possible through the alternating bamboo coverings.
A rainwater conveying and recycling system was also designed through the inclined overhanging roof which at the same time protects from sunlight in the area of access to the lot. The bamboo structure that supports it creates at the same time benches inside the open space of the first floor.

WIDESPREAD HOTEL, CINQUE TERRE, ITALY
19
The project concerns the redevelopment of an existing building in the Cinque Terre area with the aim of creating a widespread hotel. The building is half free of cover. The focal point of the project is in fact the garden that is created in this space and on which the hotel rooms can overlook.
Each room is designed through a wooden module that, starting from the bathroom wall, winds up making itself the bed base and finally the window cornice that overlooks the courtyard. In the case of the ground floor this element can be paved and seated on one side and a table on the other for the common area.
A further element of interior design is a tubular that at the same time creates the structure of the shower and wardrobe. The rooms are designed in such a way that the only closed and private area is that of the toilet and the bidet, while the sink and shower are not inside the bathroom.
The result is 5 double rooms (2 of which are on the ground floor, 1 on the first floor and 2 on the second), a common outdoor area which leads to a hob and an additional common area on the first floor with a dining room and kitchen . Within this project the materials present were chosen as well as the furnishings.

Distribution
21
This project was carried out individually within the framework of Erasmus at the University of Granada. This involved the redevelopment of an isolated building in the Granada countryside through the application of a new destination of use. I chose the destination of a summer camp because of the isolated location of the building.
The project involves the insertion of a parasitic element that can perform different functions. First function among all, the internal distribution that was absent and the consolidation of the existing structure. The building is in fact composed of three buildings that are not currently communicating with each other.
For this purpose it was decided to use a guiding element: the wire mesh. This, in addition to allowing distribution, in some parts of the building is transformed into furniture, as in the case of bedrooms, and into a movable element, as in the case of the space on the ground floor that is envisaged as a flexible environment depending on the need
The various details are studied so as to foresee the passage of the systems and the thermal insulation of the interior spaces. A path, a soccer field and a theater are also planned in the external area.

SAVE THE LAKE AGRICULTURAL SELF-PRODUCTION (NAIVASHA, KENYA)
23
The project concerns an area in the locality of Naivasha, Kenya, in front of a lake that is currently seriously polluted. With the aim of saving the lake and the ecosystem, the need for redevelopment of the area and provision of housing for growing demography is added. Initially mobility is planned (pedestrian, vehicular and commercial routes).
A series of infrastructures is also created, linked to the theme of the cultivation of roses and flowers already present: a museum, a school and a microeconomic system thanks to which the inhabitants can sell their crops and transport them increasing the economy of the place. A natural water purification system for the lake is also planned.

ICEBERG, ROME, ORIZZONTALE COLLECTIVE AND NOEO
During the summer of 2017 i took part at a workshop organized by the collective of architects Orizzontale and the sociology association Noeo. The aim was to design and build a public installation in a peripheral square which had no name and no identity. We firstly designed a social game in which the inhabitants had to indicate activities, targets and desires.
25
Then we submitted them some interviews to get more informations about the space and the life the in the neighborhood, comparing it to an iceberg and trying to discover the submerged part of it. During a week we designed and built two installations which, during the last night, hosted the presentation of the New Generations festival.
LINK THE BOUND, GENOVA, CAMPOSAZ
In 2019 I took part at a similar whorkshop in my home town with the aim of revitalize a small public-private space in the Molo neighborhood. It was organized by Camposaz, Ago architects and other social local entities. Also during this workshop we followed the participatory design method to involve inhabitants in the decision process and also in the constructive one.
The result was: tables with reused materials, urban garden in which people can cultivate plants, murals, sun visor, threes installation and seats. We had 1 cubic meter of wood to make everything and the inhabitants in the end were really happy about the result.
