În c\utarea banalului pierdut

N-ai cum s\ treci, pe mute[te, ca printr-o ap\ t\cut\, peste moartea lui Michael Jackson. Pentru c\, f\r\ s\ zburd\m `n patetisme, Michael a fost, el `nsu[i, rafinarea verbului a avea, apoi a fi, apoi a face... [i tot a[a. MJ a avut totul: voin]a de a schimba lumea, [i dac\ nu pe toat\, atunci m\car pe el `nsu[i; puterea de a umbla `n c\utarea copil\riilor pierdute, [i dac\ nu ale tuturor copiilor abuza]i, frustra]i, maturiza]i for]at, atunci m\car pe a lui, pentru a o recompune, pentru a o reasambla; banii necesari pentru a se `narma p‚n\ `n din]i cu refuzul categoric de a accepta discriminarea, ideea preconceput\, umilin]a; talentul fabulos care a f\cut din el un specimen distinct `n insectarul uman aproape dus pe apa S‚mbetei. Ce n-a avut MJ?! P\i, n-a avut via]\, copil\rie, familie, prieteni, o zi obi[nuit\. N-a avut lini[te, n-a avut timp, n-a avut de f\cut un drum de dragul drumului, a[a, pur [i simplu. {i n-are nici moarte. L-am v\zut, la un moment dat, `ncerc‚nd s\ r\spund\ unei `ntreb\ri jurnalistice, despre via]a sa: „Ce ]i-ai dorit cel mai mult, Michael, [i nu ]i-ai permis niciodat\?“ a sunat, simplu, o `ntrebare ca toate `ntreb\rile despre bani. Interviul era f\cut, pe c‚nd toate tr\s\turile fizionomiei sale recl\dite erau la locul lor. N-a fost nevoie de vorbe. Ochii `i c\utau avid o adierea de lini[te, de lumin\, de calm. „O zi de cump\r\turi `n lini[te, o zi normal\, o zi banal\“. Asta `[i dorea omul care declan[a isteria `n milioane de creiere tinere la o simpl\ apari]ie. Asta era tot. Asta era dumnezeirea: lini[tea, `mp\carea, calmul... C‚nd o mul]ime de trep\du[i domestici dezvolt\ atare idee, fals [i nesuferit, blufeaz\. Eu cred c\ Michael a fost, cu adev\rat, unul dintre pu]inii, care a `n]eles c\ lini[tea, lini[tea aceea banal\, e un lux. ∫

In search of the lost simplicity

We can't just move on, unawares, and say nothing about Michael Jackson's death. We need not resort to the emotional side, but Michael was indeed a refined personification of the verb to have, then to be, to do...and so on. MJ had it all: the will to change the world and if not all of it, at least his own; the strength to wander in search of lost childhoods and if not of those of all abused, frustrated and too early grown-up children, then at least his own, to rebuild it, to make it whole again; the required money to arm himself to the teeth with the resolute refusal to accept discrimination, prejudgment, humiliation; the fabulous talent that made him a distinct specimen in the human fauna almost going down the drain. What didn't MJ have?! Well, he didn't have a life, a childhood, family, friends, a normal day. He had no peace, no time, made no travel for the pure sake of traveling. Nor has he a death. At some point I saw him trying to answer a journalist's question relating to his life: “Michael, what was you greatest wish, but could never afford it?” was the question, simple, just like all questions about money. The interview was taken when all the features of his rebuilt face were in place. He needed few words. His eyes were desperately looking for a glint of peace, of light, of serenity. “A peaceful day at shopping, a normal, simple day”. That was the wish of a man who struck mass hysteria among youth with a simple appearance in public. That was all. That was heaven: peace, serenity, simplicity… When other worthless public figures utter such an idea, fake and hypocrite, they bluff. But I believe Michael was truly one of the few who understood that peace, the simple peace, is a luxury. ∫

Dar dac\ ai no[tri se mul]umesc s\ participe la concerte, licita]ii sau teledonuri, cei pe care [i i-au luat ca punct de reper scot din conturi milioane de euro în scopuri caritabile. Nu de mult, membrii familiei lui Brad Pitt au donat un milion de dolari în contul unui fond de cercet\ri medicale asupra cancerului, pe care l-au înfiin]at în cadrul spitalului St. John din Springfield, în statul american Missouri. Fratele celebrului actor american, Doug Pitt, a fost cel care a avut aceast\ ini]iativ\ [i a avut parte de sprijinul tuturor celor apropia]i: de so]ia lui, Lisa, de Brad Pitt, de sora lor mai mic\, Julie Neal, [i de so]ul acesteia, Rob Neil. Noul centru medical se va numi St. John’s Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center, dup\ numele mamei lor, Jane, [i va fi inaugurat în aceast\ var\. The last actions of the sort for the actress was to her involvement, as ambassador of goodwill on behalf of the High Commissioner for Refugees within UN, in a charity project which supports the World Refugee Day, next to the TV host Anderson Cooper. Last year, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt donated two million dollars to the Global Health Committee in view of building in Ethiopia a clinic for children suffering from AIDS and tuberculosis. “Our intention is to repeat the success registered in Cambodia and Ethiopia, where poor people die of tuberculosis and AIDS, two treatable illnesses” said Angelina Jolie on occasion of an official statement made at that time. The clinic will bear the name of their daughter, Zahara, who was adopted from Ethiopia. In year 2008 alone, Brad and Angelina donated through their foundation $8.4 million. Brad Pitt took an active part in building dwellings for the victims of the Katrina hurricane.

MADONNA, A GENEROUS DIVA Another generous star is Madonna who answered through a generous donation half a million dollars - to the call made by the mayor of the town of Pacentro in the Italian region of Abruzzo, who asked for help for the survivors of the earthquake in the peninsula. Madonna, whose paternal grandparents lived in Pacentro until 1919, made a “substantial donation” in favor of the Italian victims who were found in a desperate situation after a 6.3 Richter scale earthquake hit the region and claimed the lives of 200 people, explained Liz Rosenberg, the spokesperson of the famous American superstar. The singer did not wish to reveal the donated sum, but a source declared to the American press that the artist donated $500,000. “I am glad I can give a hand to the town where my forefathers come from” declared Madonna for People magazine. “My heart is next to those who lost their dear ones and the homes of which were destroyed” added the famous American artist. ∫

Dac\ m\ compar `ns\ cu nivelul de la care am pornit, un b\iat la prima genera]ie de `nc\l]a]i - pentru c\ at‚t mama c‚t [i tata au copil\rit [i au f\cut [coala la ]ar\, [i abia dup\ aceea au venit la ora[ -, practic sunt un om bogat. Dac\ m\ voi compara, de asemenea, cu media popula]iei din Rom‚nia, iar\[i pot spune c\ sunt bogat. MR. COZMIN GUSA, DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A RICH PERSON? If I compare myself to Romania’s rich, then no, it would be a dishonest answer. But if I compare myself to the level where I began, a boy from a first generation of children wearing shoes – because both my mother and my father went to school at the countryside and only after that came to town -, then yes, I am practically a rich man. Furthermore, if I compare myself to the average population in Romania, I can once again say I am rich. The definition of being rich, in my opinion, in simple terms, sounds like this: you are rich when for a long time you need not worry about paying taxes, about vacations overseas, changing the car once in five years and when the forthcom-

ing year or day does not worry you. At this point, I fit into this description. HAVE YOU RETURNED TO THE BUSINESS AREA? DO YOU HAVE A BUSINESS AT THIS MOMENT? Yes. I started to rebuild my business after interrupting my political activity at the beginning of this year, in February, and, little by little, I think I have now reached cruising speed. The business I am building will not produce very much this year – between EUR150,000 and EUR3000,000 – but next year, even given the crisis, we will be able to reach EUR1 million, which is very good for me. Pentru c\ marea problem\ `n business-ul rom‚nesc nu este cea legat\ de curaj, ci aceea legat\ de h\]i[ul m\surilor pe care trebuie s\ le iei pentru a reu[i s\ plute[ti, cu afacerea ta. {i atunci, fiecare dintre noi, `n momentul `n care porne[te la un business, `ncearc\ s\-[i fructifice capitalul pe care `l are. Capitalul meu este unul de cuno[tin]e acumulate, de rela]ii [i de expertiz\. Iar eu pun la treab\ acest capital, care, `ntre altele, `nseamn\ [i mult\ `ncredere `n tine [i `n ceilal]i. ~n al doilea r‚nd, dezvolt un business `n domeniul energiei - sunt fizician prin forma]ie -, iar energia neconven]ional\ este o provocare pe care foarte pu]ini oameni de afaceri din Rom‚nia au acceptat-o. E GREU S| FACI AFACERI ~N ROMÂNIA, MAI ALES ~N VREME DE CRIZ|? ~n criz\, este aproape imposibil. O aventur\ sut\ la sut\. Pentru c\ acum se restr‚nge capitalul de lucru [i exist\ tendin]a negativ\ de a nu fi accepta]i newcomeri `n niciun domeniu. {i atunci, pe restr‚ngerea capitalului de lucru, evident c\ nu exist\ posibilitatea unei dezvolt\ri fire[ti, iar pe blocarea accesului `n pia]\, mul]i tineri `ntreprinz\tori sunt stopa]i brutal s\-[i deschid\ o afacere. ~n condi]ii de criz\ - iar noi nu suntem `nc\ la apogeul crizei, vom ajunge acolo la finalul acestui an, `nceputul anului viitor -, domin\ legea junglei [i n-ai cum s\ r\zba]i. Nu vreau s\-i descurajez pe to]i. Exist\ oameni care au posibilit\]i mari at‚t din punct de vedere intelectual, c‚t [i financiar. Ei trebuie doar s\ g\seasc\ omul providen]ial care s\ `i ajute s\ treac\ r‚ul. Mai departe se descurc\. EXIST| TOTU{I UN DOMENIU ~N CARE SE MAI POATE INVESTI ~N ACEAST| PERIOAD|? Da. Agricultura. Afacerile de impact din acest domeniu - care sunt de dou\ feluri: fie pe suprafe]e foarte extinse, cu un bun background de rela]ii `n plan na]ional, fie agricultura ecologic\ pe suprafe]e restr‚nse [i cu un poten]ial de export remarcabil - pot deveni un pariu c‚[tig\tor pentru oamenii de afaceri cu experien]\. EXIST| PROFITORI AI CRIZEI? ~nc\ nu. Dar vor exista. Cei ce pot specula aceast\ situa]ie sunt oameni care, `n general, au f\cut afaceri cu statul, care o duc foarte bine ast\zi, dar c\rora le este fric\ s\ se expun\ `n aceast\ perioad\, pentru a nu fi desconspira]i, iar tihna lor bulversat\. Sigur vor ap\rea `n scurt timp [i profitorii tranzi]iei, mul]i dintre ei, pui ai celor de care v\ vorbesc aici, [i care vor constitui de acum, interfa]a `n noile afaceri cu statul. N-are rost s\ ne ascundem dup\ deget. Este

Because the major problem with Romanian business is not related to courage, but it is related to the bucketful of measures one has to take in order to stay afloat with your business. And then, each of us, when starting a business, tries to take advantage of the available capital. My capital is one of gathered knowledge, of relations and expertise. And I make this capital work, which means, among others, that you have to trust yourself and others as well. Secondly, I am developing a business in the energy field I am a physicist by formation -, and non-conventional energy is a challenge that very few businesspeople in Romania have accepted. IS IT TOUGH DOING BUSINESS IN ROMANIA, ESPECIALLY DURING TIMES OF CRISIS? With a crisis, it’s almost impossible. A hundred percent pure adventure. Because it is now that the working capital is regrouping and there is a negative trend of not being accepted by newcomers in any field. And then, given the limitation of the working capital, obviously there is no possibility for a natural development and against the background of

blocking the access on the market, many young enterprisers are brutally stopped in opening a business. In conditions of crisis – and we haven’t yet reached the peak of it, we will get there at the end of this year, the beginning of the next year -, the law of the jungle is employed and you can’t beat that. I don’t want to discourage everybody. There are people with great possibilities, both intellectually and financially. They just need to find the right man to help them cross the river. And from there on they can handle it. STILL, IS THERE A DOMAIN ONE CAN INVEST IN THIS PERIOD? Yes, agriculture. Strong business in this domain, which can be of two types: either on very wide surfaces with a good background of nationwide relations, or ecologic agriculture on small surfaces but with a great exporting potential, can be a winning bet for experienced businesspeople. ARE THERE PEOPLE CAPITALIZING ON THE CRISIS? Not yet. But here will be. Those who can speculate this situation are people that, generally, have done business with the state, people who lead a very good life today but are afraid of exposing themselves in this period so as not to be discovered and have their peace disturbed. CLOSE COPY OF THE PROTOTYPE The prototype presented in Paris, the one after which the series model will be made, offered a few indications of what it would look like. The protection elements of the body are finished for this prototype in different colors, while the side profile, with its long lines stretching through the length of the body keep to the tradition of the BMW SUVs. The black strip on the lower side, surrounding the entire body comes to complete the sculptural design of the vehicle. The BMW X1 concept is equipped with headlights, with two optical blocks of round shape and, taken as a whole, the position of the headlights and fog lights respects the “3 eye” pattern, typical to the models of the X class. At the back side, the stop lights shaped as an L project a uniform light due to the LED technology. The stop lights together with the rear windshield, with a significant tilt degree, are emphasizing the width of the vehicle. Furthermore, another design element specific to this model is the sculptural profile of the headlights and rear optical blocks. The special design of the body is completed by the new 19inch, alloy rims, with a 10-spoke design. The new BMW X1 will also be available in Romania at the end of the year, shortly after its launch on the market. ∫

The history of this genuine paradise started in 1961, when two English gentlemen, the banker John Duncan Miller and the beer producer Patrick Guiness, spoke for the first time to the prince Karim Aga Khan about this place, persuading him to go see the attractions of the area. Alte lucr\ri scoase la v‚nzare pe 21 iunie au fost „Petunii [i Maci“ de Nicolae Tonizta, pentru 20.000 euro [i „Pe Lacul cu Nuferi“, al lui Arthur Verona, pentru aproximativ 7.000 euro. S-a v‚ndut „Autoportret“ de Petre Iorgulescu Yor, pentru 6.000 euro [i „Strada cu trec\tori“ de Rudolf Schweitzer Cump\na, pentru 3.300 euro. The highest sale quota in Romania is currently held by Nicolae Tonitza. But the starting price is not always the sale price. The painting “Natura statica” by Theodor Pallady sold for EUR26,000 even though the starting price was lower by EUR3,000. As a total, this auction which took place at the end of month June sold artworks with a total value of approximately EUR62,000. Other works put out for sale on June 21st were “Petunii si Maci” by Nicolae Tonitza for EUR28,000 and “Pe lacul cu nuferi” belonging to Arthur Verona, for approximately EUR7,000. Furthermore, “Autoportret” by Petre Iorgulescu Yor was sold for EUR6,000 and also “Strada cu trecatori” (Passers-by on the street) by Rudolf Schweitzer Cumpana for EUR3,300. The painting “Venetia” (Venice) by Gheorghe Patrascu was a bit more expensive, being put out for sale on auction at the beginning of month June and selling for EUR45,000. ∫

You cover all this babilonian tower and you put it in the avon for an hour, on a medium to low fire. Towards the end, remove the cap and leave it for a while to toast. Got it?! Arhitectul Mihai Butucaru, aflat `n cea de-a [asea lun\ de mandat la timona federa]iei, spune c\ sunt `n desf\[urare c‚teva proiecte foarte importante pentru yachtingul rom‚nesc, dar c\, din p\cate, continu\ s\ se loveasc\ de un anume imobilism al cluburilor afiliate. „Cine sper\ s\ se-nt‚mple, peste noapte, lucruri spectaculoase, dup\ ce zeci de ani nu s-a `n‚mplat nimic, este cel pu]in naiv. Noi punem la punct acum lucruri absolut obligatorii, `ncerc‚nd s\ cre\m un cadru organizatoric `n ceea ce prive[te documentele Federa]iei Regulamentul de Organizare [i Func]ionare, precum [i Statutul - pe care le vom supune aprob\rii Adun\rii Generale la sf‚r[itul acestui an. Sigur c\ am trimis [i cluburilor o solicitare de propuneri de modificare, dar am avut parte de un feedback destul de slab. Marea lor majoritate nu au trimis nimic. Prea mul]i c‚r‚ie pe la col]uri dar nim\nui nu-i convine s\ se implice“, spune Butucaru. The architect Mihai Butucaru, at his sixth month of mandate at the lead of the federation, says several very important projects are in progress for Romanian yachting, but sadly, he continues to confront with a certain standstill momentum of affiliated clubs. “Those who hope for spectacular things to happen over night after tens of years of inactivity are quite naïve. We are now regulating certain mandatory things, trying to create an administrative framework with respect to the documents of the Federation – Regulation of Organization and Operation, as well as the Memorandum - which we will submit for the approval of the Gener-

al Assembly at the end of this year. Of course we also sent to the clubs a request containing proposals of modification, but we had little feedback. Most of them sent no reply. Many whisper and comment, but few get involved," says Butucaru. Beyond these shortcomings of “interior order”, the activity of the management focuses on the development of very important projects. mania. It is called “Zoom 8” and it is addressed to children aged 16 – says Mihai Butucaru. It is a pretty tempting class of initiation because, as opposed to the current classes of the type which are more difficult to refloat in case of capsizing, this one is very easily refloatable; it is altogether interesting and cheap. We are trying to organize in 2011 in Romania a major competition at this class – a world or European championship. We will see at the beginning of month August – when the International Federation will reunite in Sweden – if we are granted or not the organization of the event. We have done what was strictly of the Federation's competence: we managed to introduce the new class in the competition; there are already several of these boats and, depending on the sponsorship mechanism we will develop, we will find willing sponsors in order to buy and distribute these boats to as many clubs as possible. Of course that the organization of a major competition will bring a qualitative step and we are trying to create a state of competition among the young" adds Butucaru. THE ITINERANT SCHOOL Another project to the joy, but also to the dissatisfaction of the Federation’s president is called the “Itinerant school”. “I am glad because it’s a very interesting idea which makes this sports activity more popular. The itinerant school means a group of three instructors with two or three children and boats who, according to a schedule established by the local authorities, will roam through the country for a year or two during

the season and where waters allow practicing yachting. But to do that you need people to get involved. And this is where my dissatisfaction begins. Even if, paradoxically, there is money that both the Ministry and various NGOs can access, there are no people to get involved. And I, for one, can't do everything by myself," states Mihai Butucaru. A NAUTICAL BASE BY THE BLACK SEA SHORE The most interesting project of the stage is taken care of by the president of the federation himself. He considers the set-up of a nautical base by the seashore. “For that there is money to access and even European projects for the development of nautical bases, non-reimbursable money in a proportion of 98%. We just need to find a location. By elimination, we reached the conclusion that we can choose between two harbor settlements, either from Midia, or Mangalia. When we find out to whom the two harbors belong, we will have a discussion with the owner in order to present this project. But we should definitely hurry. Funds can only be accessed before 2013 and most of the time will pass with preparing the documentation” concludes Mihai Butucaru. ∫

an elegant event. Both suits have to fit impeccably and be made of superior fineness wool weave. It is preferable to have two pants of the same fabric for each suit, because pants deteriorate quicker than the coat. For this reason, in our stores you will always find suits with two pants made of 100% wool and with 130 fineness. Another useful piece is the blazer coat with metallic buttons, also made of fine wool weave, preferably in marine blue. This way it will go well with jeans and a white shirt, for an elegant casual look, with grey fabric trousers, maybe even those from the suit, with a striped shirt and tie for a business outfit in British style or with light beige pants made of cotton and a T-shirt for a comfortable outfit during the hot seasons. You will also need five, six shirts which, depending on your profession and preoccupations, will vary in terms of texture, cut, fabric and printing. It is very important that you use only natural fabric shirts. The Egyptian cotton batiste or the triple treated linseed are among my favorite fabrics. Regardless of the type, the shirt must not be too large or too

tight, but must follow the body line. There is nothing of a worse taste than having a balloon shirt of one with buttons ready to burst. The three white shirts are a must in the wardrobe: one with high collar for outfits with casual pants and coat, or even with a suit, but without a tie, another simple one with a soft collar, to wear under a fine sweater and one with button sleeve for evening occasions. The collar of the latter will necessarily be stiffened with stays and sharpened. It is to keep in mind that thin ties, with a simple knot, which are currently in the trend, are not to be worn with straight collars, nor are wide ties or with double knots to be worn with pointed collars. LADY IN RED Lady Gold features a passion-red casing, identical to that of the much desired Lady Diamond (released on the market in just eight pieces), while Ultramarine Gold is marine blue. The casings are made of titanium covered with hi-tech ceramics and the keys (with Roman numbers an innovation brought by the brand Gresso) are made of 18-carat gold. The back case of the telephones is made of transparent sapphire so that the inner mechanism of the telephone is perfectly visible. The screen is also produced of sapphire crystals, having a resolution QVGA of 240 x 320 pixels and 65,000 colors. The battery door, made of stainless steel and covered in natural leather, features a magnetic lock. The name of the collection and the individual number of the telephone are engraved by laser on the back. The golden triangle on the crown is synonymous with Gresso. While the model Lady Gold is fit only for ladies, the blue one is also perfect for gentlemen who don't necessarily stick to the classic tradition of the famous black telephones. ∫

Au defilat pe litoral modelele Lincoln Zefir (1939), Bugatti Chapelle (1957) Studebaker Dictator (1937), Ford Mustang (1968), Excalibur Roadster (1957), Mercedes Benz 200s (1969), Shelby Cobra [i un Ford T din 1926, de]inut de omul de afaceri Elan Schwartzenberg. Fiind cunoscut ca un pasionat al ma[inilor de epoc\, primarul Constan]ei, Radu Maz\re, nu a ratat [ansa de a-[i etala noua achizi]ie în domeniu, un Studebaker Dictator din 1937. Pre]ul minim al unei ma[ini este de 120.000 de euro. Ma[inile de epoc\ au fost prezentate publicului în pia]eta Cazinoului din Mamaia. ~ns\ nu doar cei pasiona]i de autoturimele vechi au fost invita]i la eveniment. Prima zi a fost dedicat\ tuning-ului auto, bijuteriilor automobilistice în care proprietarii au investit mii de euro pentru a da ma[inii fie putere prin instalarea diferitelor kituri de motor, fie pentru a str‚nge c‚t mai mul]i decibeli. Se poate spune c\ prima zi a „Mamaia Exotic Car Show“ a fost una a tinerilor. S-au acordat premii simbolice pentru mai multe sec]iuni ale evenimentului, const‚nd în plachete pentru cea mai veche ma[in\, cea mai frumoas\ ma[in\, cea mai original\, cea mai sexi, cea mai de teren. Pre[edintele juriului a fost primarul ora[ului Monaco, Georges Marsan, care [i-a f\cut apari]ia la conferin]a de pres\ într-un Ford Mustang, înso]it de Radu Maz\re. Pentru organizarea evenimentului, Prim\ria Constan]a a alocat 60.000 euro. ∫

The Constanta City Hall brought into town 24 famous classic cars, some even one of a kind, most of them being part of private collections. The models to cruise the streets included Lincoln Zefir (1939), Bugatti Chapelle (1957) Studebaker Dictator (1937), Ford Mustang (1968), Excalibur Roadster (1957), Mercedes Benz 200s (1969), Shelby Cobra and a 1926 Ford T, owned by the businessman Elan Schwartzenberg. Being known as a keen fan of classic cars, the mayor of the town of Constanta, Radu Mazare, did not miss the chance to display his latest acquisition of the sort, a 1937 Studebaker Dictator. The minimum price of such a vehicle starts from EUR 120,000. The classic cars were presented to the public in the Casino square in Mamaia. But the fans of classic cars were not the only ones to be

invited. The first day was dedicated to auto tuning, automotive jewels in which owners invested thousands of Euros either to bring more power to the car by installing various engine kits, or to gather as many decibels as possible. One can say that the first day of “Mamaia Exotic Car Show” was one dedicated to the youth. Symbolic prizes were awarded for several sections of the event, consisting in honorific plates for the oldest car, the most beautiful car, the most original car, the sexiest car, the most off-road capable car. The president of the jury was the mayor of Monaco, Georges Marsan who appeared to the press conference in a Ford Mustang, next to the mayor Radu Mazare. To organize the event, the City Hall in Constanta allotted EUR 60,000. ∫
