TimberLofts

Respect the environment and live together. TimberLofts aims to be the ambitious result of a joint planning activity that is also CO2 and energy-neutral. This kind of activity is well known in the Netherlands with the name of MO (Mede Opdrachtgeverschap). It is based on a co-planning where a professional party handles the executive and organizing tasks, and where the future residents can participate on designing decisions. TimberLofts: 32 apartments, different sizes, different typology and different configurations, just to accommodate the different needs of the clients. At the same time, a place for sharing, with many common spaces that can be use in flexible ways from the whole community. Energetically sustainable and eco-friendly, mainly built in solid timber with a concrete basement. Architectural firm: Quay Architects

De Kleine Kapitein

A new nature- inclusive multi-purpose building in the heart of Amsterdam. A school, a kindergarten and a gym at the same time. A new place where to learn and to grow, with several pubblic spaces for formal and informal activities. The shape of the building is due to plot configuration and sun orientation, and it will be integrated in a wider system with a square/ playground in front of it. A deep eco-friendly approach is especially evident on the facade. Here there is space for climbing plants and (hidden in the masonry) bird nests. Moreover, all the bricks will be coming from factory leftovers, in order to encourage re-use and re-cycle. Start of construction: May 2020 Architectural firm: Quay Architects

Kavel 07

A brand new five stories house in Amsterdam. The design of the building puts together flexibility and functionality, exploiting the potential hidden behind the Administration restrictions: the allowed maximum surface has been used (creating two double height spaces), and a house extension has been added on the back yard. On the opposite side the design has been enhanced through the master bedroom balcony, framed in a wooden box popping out to emphasize the main facade. Moreover, the building floor plans have been thought to accommodate the client possible future needs. In this way, a division in two different flats will be possible also thanks to the predisposition for a new staircase, ensuring flexibility and adaptability. Architectural firm: Quay Architects

Patrizia Hair Salon Light inside out.

In a monotonous street with several commercial spaces we looked for a way to emphasize and give a special characterization to this little Hair Salon. In this way, the classic shop signboard upgrades its basic purpose and it becomes a lighting element both on the outside and on the inside. Particular attention is given to materials: the contemporary style meets classic materials and textures, in the respect of the traditional Sicilian culture. Architectural firm: Architettura Factory

FUTURE PROOF

The Yoga Centre that adapts to changing needs. Since the beginning of civilization the roof, as architectural element, kept investing an iconic value in the collective imagination: indeed, the word “roof” stands for safety, security, stability. Insisting on the equivalence roof = protection, everything here happens in relation to it. The roof expands beyond the limits of the indoor space, emphasizing the presence of a panoramic balcony that runs all around. In this way, it provides a strong sense of unity to the whole architecture by imposing itself as the predominant element, giving the building the potential to become a new landmark. Aesthetic principles aside, its design is not arbitrary but it is the rational result of logistic needs: in order to have an unobstructed space, it is made of main beams reinforced by a secondary beams system. This brings to a regular triangular pattern: in this way the whole roof becomes modular, and therefore fast and convenient to build, but also customizable. Flexibility is, indeed, one of the key points of the project, also regarding the possibility of future indoor volume increase. Since the structure is standardized and the span between the columns is constant, the building could also be extended on the long direction, potentially just by adding other “strips”. The building has been designed to be energy self-sufficient. Furthermore, the choice of material makes the building even more eco-friendly, by using local cork for insulation, and wood for structure and finishing. Competition entry for the “House on a Cliff Competition”.

The Lantern

The minimalistic viewing tower that plays with transparency. To maintain a delicate approach, transparency has been considered the main feature of the tower. For this reason, everything is reduced to necessary. Taking inspiration from nature, the tower is actually reduced to its skeleton. But what about the limit between inside and outside? Just a simple grid with a double nature: transparent layer from a close distance, subtle translucent screen from far. Overnight the idea of the limit is emphasized thanks to lights that, placed all along the columns, reflect on the grid turning the tower into a lantern. Practically, the main function of viewing point has been explored through the classic element of the stair (transparent as well, in perforated steel sheets), that in this case assumes an extra value transforming itself from simple vertical connection device to a welcoming seat system that runs all the way up as a tribune . JUST.ANOTHER.PEAK

Architecture inspired by nature. A simple space, totally immersed in nature, perfect to stimulate creativity. The House, with its steep pitched roof, recalls the natural skyline, while proposing itself as a huge camera focusing on the two opposite islands. A new element with a strong dialogue with the context with no artificial paths, just the house like another spontaneous peak. A self-sufficient architecture for an eco-friendly approach. Contemplation, silence, concentration: key words for the ideal creative hub. A flexible space, with no internal divisions and every possible configuration, with the lab area hung up over the sea. In front of the House, a changing environment, different lights, several reflexes. Ideal to test the ability of a photographer. Competition entry for the “Ibiza Artist House Contest”. Social Connections

Community places as urban regeneration system. In the last decades the urban debate has been progressively focusing on the urban sprawl phenomenon. However, lately all the cities are trying to find out efficient systems to fight it. As a solution, the university thesis project suggests the regeneration of the ex-military Stamoto barracks, located in Bologna. The reactivation insists on the current weaknesses, which will be turned into strengths. The main idea is about a new connection system which could link the project area with its context through a big new linear park . In this way the intervention will be able to solve the difficult accessibility and give new spaces to the community combining economic, environmental and social sustainability.

The Dancing Tower

A new eco-friendly mixed-use tower. According to the requests of the Reggio Emilia Administration, the new tower will be located near the Mediopadana Train Station (designed by Santiago Calatrava). In order to avoid an excessive contrast, the project tries to study an entity that is able to communicate and co-exist with the Station harmoniously. For this reason it will be equipped with a brise soleil system that will have to recall the Calatrava’s work, also exercising a bio-climatic function for the energy-saving. The effect given by these elements will be really dynamic but unlike the station, where portals are arranged in a horizontal direction, the blades of the tower will be fixed vertically in order to fit the building conformation. The absolute transparency of the envelope is due to its functional destination as viewpoint, and the internal distribution has been studied paying attention to the relationship with the context.

The school that embraces diversity. Each person has different needs, understanding them and creating the right environment is often complex. Even more complex is to foresee the needs of joung users, who will get to know the world with variable timings. For this reason, the project aims to design a kindergarten equipped with independent spaces for each target age and also common areas, to facilitate exchanges, relationships and growth. All of this, using wood technology for a better environmental sustainability.

Winner project of the “XII ARCHITECTURE AWARD” Contest organized by Ferrara University to design wooden buildings, with exhibition and publication on the online section of The Plan Magazine.

The Open Museum

5th International Summer School of Architecture, Art & Design, organized by Periferica. In the occasion of a 10 days Workshop, this horizontal wooden system has been created for a newly born cultural park. The workshop moved around a prototyping and self-construction activity in sinergy with other 80 people from all over the world. This collaboration made possible the realization of a new linear connection system useful to regenerate an abbandoned quarrey. An easy repeatable matrix with a wooden module of 120x120 cm that, multiplied and modified, changed its characterization to become platform, spot light, water feature or thiny garden. Year: 2018 64

Work of (too much?) Art

Some images from the graphic collection featured by DISORDINE DEGLI ARCHITETTI. What would happen if a well-accepted existing murals suddenly appeared on a famous architecture facade? Could it be considered as a great realization or should we look at it like an abomination? And, finally, where is the limit between art and vandalism?
