Unexpected
Inspiration
Dane County Humane Society
Dear Friend, Lexi, a blind kitten looking for a loving and understanding family, and John, a 17-yearold who had recently lost his eyesight while battling a brain tumor, did not know that their paths would cross in the most unexpected and inspirational way. Your support helped bring these two together. With your generosity, Dane County Humane Society’s (DCHS) experienced adoption counselors help match over 3,000 companion animals with loving families every year. The adoption between Lexi and John is a true example of sweet serendipity. Lexi was one of 14 kittens abandoned in a small carrier in late April. All the kittens were thin and dehydrated, and many of them, including Lexi, were facing serious medical issues and in need of immediate care. Your philanthropy and support make it possible for us to immediately address the medical needs of each animal that arrives at DCHS. Lexi’s right eye had ruptured due to a bacterial infection. A few days later her left eye also ruptured. Your financial support allows our shelter veterinarians to perform lifesaving procedures every day. The procedure to remove Lexi’s eyes saved her life, but sadly also left her blind. Lexi and another kitten, Zoe, were placed together in a loving foster home. Their volunteer foster mom, Karrie, quickly saw a special bond form between the pair. She has fostered over 150 animals, but Karrie had never seen a pair like this before. “While Lexi was learning the skills which come naturally to most kittens – finding the litter box and navigating stairs – Zoe stayed close by as her constant companion, essentially becoming Lexi’s ‘seeing eye’ sister,” said Karrie. When the kittens were ready to be adopted, Marissa DeGroot, DCHS Public Relations Coordinator, brought them on TV as the featured Pet(s) of the Week. This pair and their story connected with many people, and particularly resonated with the Harrison Family – Diane, Paul, Mary and John. - over -

Within hours of watching Lexi and Zoe on the TV segment, the Harrisons drove from their home in Watertown, WI to DCHS to meet the bonded pair. They believed their family could provide the stable and understanding environment the kittens needed. The Harrisons knew this duo would also bring something special to their family. The connection between John and Lexi was immediate. The entire family loved both kittens, and Lexi and Zoe were soon on their way to their forever home. The confidence this little kitten exuded, despite her blindness, was an inspiration to John. “I just needed, kind of, a role model,” said John, “because it’s hard being blind, but as Lexi can show you, it’s not the end of the world.” Lexi - May 2, 2016
Lexi’s confidence and spirit have inspired John, who hopes to work someday as an advocate for others with disabilities. John’s road continues on as he starts a new treatment for his brain tumor. This time, however, he will have Lexi and Zoe right by his side. Your support allowed Dane County Humane Society to provide the necessary medical care and support for these ill and abandoned kittens, and also helped Lexi and Zoe become a part of a new loving family. This life changing adoption would not have been possible without you. Thank you! Please consider continuing your support with a donation that makes a difference in the lives of over 8,000 domestic and wild animals each year who come to DCHS in need of comfort, compassion and care. Together, we will continue to save lives and find homes for wonderful pets like Lexi and Zoe.
