SUMMER

AN INTRODUCTION TO GUÐMUNDUR JÓNASSON TRAVEL

ÍSAFJÖRÐUR HÚSAVÍK

For more than 85 years, our company has hosted travellers from all corners of the world. Through Guðmundur Jónasson Travel, also called GJ Travel, many have returned time and time again together with their families and friends, to experience Iceland’s unique, beautiful nature and historical traditions. Our dedicated team never lose sight of the ‘personal touch’, and work hard to ensure that the varied and interesting itineraries offered by GJ Travel provide fully for the needs of today’s travellers. Our company was formed in 1929, when our founder Guðmundur Jónasson obtained his first driving licence. Fascinated by the seldom explored interior, he ventured out to the highlands and even onto the glaciers, opening up a whole new world to the 20th century traveller. Since he passed away in 1985, his family has continued to share his love and enthusiasm for Iceland, and is committed to introducing fascinating tours and adventures for everyone to enjoy. GUÐMUNDUR JÓNASSON A PERSONAL REFLECTION 1909 – 1985 Guðmundur, the founder of Guðmundur Jónasson Travel, was not content with Iceland’s limited number of roads in the 1930´s, so he pioneered his own. His travels in the highlands and on Iceland’s glaciers are legendary and today’s travellers benefit from his explorations. When NASA chose Iceland as their training ground for the first moon landing because of the lunar style landscape, they chose Guðmundur to show the way. He teamed up with Sir Edmund Hillary, guiding him when he visited Iceland after his ascent of Mt. Everest.

Those who travel with us today travel in his footsteps and we hope they share his love for this Land of Ice and Fire called Iceland.

Iceland - A land for all seasons The Country: Iceland is an island of 103.000 km2 (39,756 sq.miles), about the size of Portugal, Cuba, South Korea, the US state of Kentucky and the Indian state of Bihar. Its highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, rises to 2.110 m and over 11 per cent of the country is covered by glaciers, including Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe. Energy: Situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is a hot spot of volcanic and geothermal activity: 30 post-glacial volcanoes have erupted in the past two centuries, and natural hot water supplies much of the population with inexpensive, pollution-free heating. Rivers are harnessed to provide affordable hydroelectric power. People: Out of a population numbering around 330.000, two-thirds live in the capital Reykjavík and its neighbouring towns in the southwest. Keflavík International Airport is located about 50 km (30 miles) from the capital. The interior highland is uninhabited (and uninhabitable), and most centers of population are situated on the coast. Language: Iceland was settled by Nordic people in the 9th century - history tells that the first permanent settler was Ingólfur Arnarson, a Norwegian Viking who made his home where Reykjavík now stands. The Icelanders still speak the language of the Vikings, although modern Icelandic has undergone changes in pronunciation and in vocabulary! Iceland is alone in upholding another Norse tradition, i.e. the custom of using patronymics rather than surnames. An Icelander’s Christian name is followed by his or her father’s name and the suffix -son or -dóttir, e.g. Guðrún Pétursdóttir (Guðrún, daughter of Pétur). Members of a family can therefore have many different "surnames", which sometimes causes confusion to foreigners! Route 1 or the “Ring Road”: It is the main road in Iceland which goes around the island, mostly along the coast, connecting many villages and towns. The total length of Route 1 is 1,360 kilometers (843 miles). In general, driving tours around Iceland with the most popular side trips are about 2000 km (1.240 miles). If you add the Westfjords, calculate about 3000 km (1.860 miles) of driving. Best time to travel: Iceland is a country that inspires visitors year round. Spring offers brightening days and emerging flora and fauna, summer has nearly round-the-clock sunlight and balmy weather, autumn brings a wonderful change in colours while winter features dark mysterious days, softly glowing Northern Lights and even occasionally snow. The hardest part is choosing when to visit. This brochure includes spring, summer and autumn tours, while the winter and northern light tours are featured in a separate brochure. The climate in Iceland: Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland enjoys a moderate maritime climate: cool in summer and fairly mild in winter. Normal summer day temperatures range between 5-8 °C (41 – 47 F) for lows and 12 -18 °C (54 – 64 °F) for highs. When it comes to Iceland’s weather — the one thing you can count on is unpredictability. The best plan is to be prepared for anything and everything AND always to dress in layers. The Icelanders have a saying: "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing." Travel time to Iceland: From Oslo 2 hours / From London 2,5 hours / From Frankfurt 3 hours / From Boston 5 hours / From Seattle 7 hours

The highlight is a 90-minute round-trip hike up toward Brenninsteinsalda, the rainbow mountain of Iceland, which is still "hot" and where you can see sizzling sulfur springs and vapor at its sides. It could very well be the most colourful and spectacular volcanic mountain of Iceland, and so its picture is often found in books and calendars. In Landmannalaugar there is also a natural geothermal stream where you can enjoy a relaxing bath. We continue to the beautiful waterfall Hjálparfoss surrounded by unusual basalt rock formations. Nearby is the Viking farm ruins at Stöng, which was completely buried in pumice during one of Hekla Volcano's bigger eruptions in 1104. A leisurely hike brings us to Gjáin, a green oasis in an otherwise rocky, barren moon-like landscape. Þjórsárdalur is off-the-beaten-path and is dominated by Hekla, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes. Please note that in case Landmannalaugar is not accessible during May and June departures we travel only to Þjórsárdalur valley on that day. Day 4, MON: GOLDEN CIRCLE Today, we explore Þingvellir, a national park and UNESCO world heritage site, followed by Geysir hot springs and Gullfoss waterfall. After the three "must-see" sights on the Golden Circle route, we add a little extra. DURATION: 3 days / 2 nights

Day 1: REYKJANES PENINSULA & SOUTH COAST Meet your tour guide and travel to the Reykjanes Peninsula with its hot springs, lava fields, mountains and moon-like landscapes. The first stop is at Kleifarvatn, the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula situated on the fissure zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It's picturesque and epic with black sandy beaches and steep rocks, cliffs and small caves. The soft green moss in between gives the lunar landscape some softness and color. Nearby are the Krýsuvík geothermal fields with solfataras, fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs. The soil is bright yellow, red and green, steamy and burning hot. On we go to Grænavatn, a small lake in an explosion crater with a distinctive green color caused by sulfur and the extreme depth of the lake. A short stop at the charming village Eyrarbakki with a large number of preserved houses from the period 1890-1920. In the afternoon we reach Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can follow a slick and wet trail and walk right behind the falls. Near Vík, we take a short stroll along Reynisfjara beautiful black beach with amazing basalt rocks, caves, and crashing waves. Our journey takes us past two glaciers, Mýrdals- and Eyjafjallajökull. Our next stop is the gorgeous Skógafoss waterfall, another must-see location. Overnight in South Iceland.

Day 2: GOLDEN CIRCLE, BORGARFJÖRÐUR VALLEY & HORSE FARM We start the day with three of Iceland's most famous spots: Gullfoss waterfall, Geyser hot springs, and Þingvellir National Park. We continue to West Iceland, reaching Borgarfjörður, known as Iceland's Saga Valley because of its many important historical events. The Hraunfossar waterfalls, "the lava falls", are exceptionally beautiful. The water seems to magically appear from underneath the lava cascading over a long and moss covered lava wall, falling into a bright turquoise-colored river originated from the glacier Langjökull. The next stop is at Deildartungahver, Europe's most powerful hot spring concerning the volume of water produced. The water that flows here is boiling and sizzling. Next, we visit a local family and their horse farm, where you will be able to hug an Icelandic horse or take a selfie with your new friend. The family members tell us about living and farming in rural Iceland. Overnight in Borgarnes, West Iceland.

New tour

Day 3: SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA We travel to the picturesque fishing town of Stykkishólmur on the north shore of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where you have three hours leisure time for own explorations and sightseeing. We recommend visiting the local geothermal swimming pool, the Volcano Museum, and the museum about eider ducks. Another optional is the fjord & bird watching cruise which takes you around the small islands of Breiðafjörður Bay for just over two hours where you can observe seabirds and taste freshly caught scallops. In the afternoon we travel through friendly towns and villages, explore a region where volcanic craters, lava flows, an ice cap, mountains, fjords, sandy beaches and high cliffs shape its landscapes. The peninsula itself is also named Iceland in Miniature. We stop at Kirkjufell, one of Iceland's most photographed mountains. The Snæfellsnes National Park is the westernmost part of the peninsula, including the mystical glacier Snæfellsjökull, as well as other unique sites. We continue by the roots of the stratovolcano made famous by Jules Verne in his book "Journey to the Center of the Earth". We visit some of the nearby bird cliffs, basalt rocks, and strange lava formations before we reach Búðir, the setting of one of Iceland's most photographed churches. Our journey takes us via the town of Borgarnes back to Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city.

ARCTIC CRUISES

The capital of Greenland is a fascinating city filled with contrasts, whether in culture or travel experiences. In Nuuk the modern Greenlandic society meets the old traditions and the 16,000 inhabitants live respecting the nature. The town is situated in a beautiful fjord system where the whales come in close in the summer and can be seen from the shore. Nuuk has it all – a new shopping mall and good restaurants, while at the harbor the Greenlandic hunters still bring in seal and reindeer to be sold at the local market. We offer several multiday packages including tours and activities such as sailing in the fjord, hiking, whale watching, city sightseeing, visiting a Greenlandic family, storytelling and exploring deserted Inuit settlements.

Travelling along the coast in Greenland is not only a spectacular nature experience, but also an opportunity to get close to the Greenlandic culture. Unlike other Arctic cruises that are designed for tourists, the Greenland coastal ferry carries more local passengers than foreign travellers. Greenlanders depend on the coastal ferry as an alternative to flying, and how lucky we are to have such a beautiful way to travel in Greenland! You dine alongside locals in the communal café and take in magnificent views from the upper decks. You have every chance to strike up a conversation and hear stories you won’t find anywhere in the internet. At the end of the journey, watch as your new acquaintances reunite with their families on the dock, and know that you are a witness to something unique to Greenland.

We offer a wide selection of Arctic Expedition Cruises in Spitsbergen, East- and West Greenland. While cruising and hiking in the Arctic regions, you become increasingly fascinated by the unique and dramatic wilderness, vast and open spaces, the history and the people. These expedition cruise programs focus on viewing wildlife and the breathtaking scenery: ragged and barren mountains, fjords, narrow waterways, glaciers, icebergs, miles and miles of gentle tundra with dozens of flowering plants in vivid colours. In the frigid waters animals such as belugas, walruses and several seal species can be spotted. Whether it is an adventure into history, an exploration of natural wonders, or a look at rare and amazing cultures, there is an awe-inspiring voyage for everyone to one of the world’s most remote regions.

ICELAND & NORTHEAST GREENLAND VOYAGE NATURE, WILDLIFE, HISTORY AND NORTHERN LIGHTS

Join a spectacular tour in the Arctic. After exploring Iceland, a country of fire and ice, take an expedition ship to Northeast Greenland, far above the Arctic Circle. Voyage to places where most people have never been. This tour focuses on Northern Lights, nature, history and wild life. Iceland awaits you with an interesting mix of mountainous and volcanic landscape: fjords, lava fields, hot springs and volcanoes unfold as you explore Iceland. ITINERARY

ICELAND

DURATION: 8 days / 7 nights

Day 1: WELCOME to ICELAND Private transfer from Keflavík International Airport to a 4-star hotel in the center of Reykjavík, where you spend 2 nights.

Day 2: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE Iceland is spectacular and so is the Golden Circle route. Experience wide open volcanic landscapes. Visit the ancient Viking Parliament area of Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, and the place where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet - and are moving apart. There is a widening fissure in the ground where the planet is literally opening up. Next stop is Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into a glacial river and attracts travellers all year. Nearby are the Geysir geothermal fields. Sheer power of water and steam erupts and really makes you realize how alive the ground is beneath our feet. Day 3: TRAVEL TO WEST GREENLAND Private airport transfer in

Reykjavík. A 3-hour flight brings you to Ilulissat in West Greenland, 300 kilometres north of the Polar Circle. Transfer and welcome meeting at 4-star Hotel Arctic. Enjoy a guided city walk of Ilulissat and afterwards you have some time to explore the town, visit the local museum and observe Greenlandic life at the always busy harbour. There is hardly any place in Ilulissat where there is no view of either the Icefiord, the Disko Bay or another natural gem. After dinner, depart for a midnight sailing trip to the famous Ilulissat Icefiord which is the world's largest ice sculpture park. The experience is overwhelming as lights and colours change constantly.

Day 4: EQI – THE CALVING GLACIER Early morning departure by boat to Eqi - the calving glacier. Only few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi glacier, which runs into the fjord 80 km north of Ilulissat. You can get close to the edge of the glacier by boat as we cruise in front of the glacier for around one hour and might see the calving process. The front of the glacier is 3,4 km wide! The sound of the active glacier is quite remarkable while the sight of icebergs toppling into the water is breathtaking. Afterwards we continue to the small settlement of Ataa, a former trading station, where we enjoy a delicious lunch. On the way back to Ilulissat, keep your eyes open and hopefully you will spot some whales.

Day 5: INUIT SETTLEMENT AT ILULISSAT ICEFIORD Guided walking tour to the old Inuit settlement in the Sermermiut valley, on the famous Ilulissat Icefiord, which was inscribed on UNESCO's world heritage list in 2004 because of its outstanding glaciology and natural beauty. Learn about local history and Inuit customs and admire the views across the majestic icebergs. The Icefiord is about 65-70 km long. It is densely packed with floating icebergs and ice floes, which are slowly pushed out through the fjord. Sit down and try listening for the many different sounds of the ice. This is nature at its best. The rest of the day is free at leisure to hike along the Icefiord and explore the town of Ilulissat. Farewell dinner at Hotel Arctic. Day 6: TRAVEL BACK TO ICELAND Explore the town of Ilulissat in the morning and do a bit of last minute Greenland shopping. Return by flight to Reykjavík. Private transfer to a downtown hotel in Iceland’s capital, where you spend 2 nights.

Day 7: BLUE LAGOON & REYKJAVÍK Bus transfer to the Blue Lagoon where you can relax in its rejuvenating mineral rich geothermal water, believed to have healing powers. The afternoon is free at leisure to explore Reykjavík, Iceland's capital, or enjoy optional spa treatments at the Blue Lagoon.

WEST GREENLAND EXPLORATION ICE, WILD LIFE AND INUIT CULTURE

The scale, power and beauty of Greenland’s ice sheet is fascinating to everyone who sees it. Icebergs calve from glaciers to begin their long journey out to the sea – unique and powerful natural events. At the Ilulissat Icefiord, a UNESCO world heritage site, huge icebergs rise more than hundred meters above sea level and are stranded at the mouth of the fjord. The Arctic wildlife of Greenland is best seen in Kangerlussuaq where thousands of wild reindeer and musk oxen are grazing. During this 6-day journey to West Greenland we also take you whale watching, travel to the Inland Ice Cap and encounter the Greenlandic sledge dogs. HIGHLIGHTS and EXPERIENCES: 4 nights in Ilulissat and 1 night in Kangerlussuaq Experience the Icefiord on foot, by flight and by boat Travel to Eqi - the calving glacier Encounter Greenlandic sledge dogs Trip to the Inland Ice Cap and Arctic wild life tour in Kangerlussuaq Whale watching in the Disko Bay

Learn about local history and Inuit customs and admire the views across the majestic icebergs. Sit down and try listening for the many different sounds of the ice. This is nature at its best. Ilulissat is a dog sledge-area and the dogs in town are still used for both work and play every winter. We invite you to join in the feeding of a family of dogs. You can see, feel and certainly hear the howling of hungry husky dogs. The owner will demonstrate the equipment and tell about life as a sledge dog in Greenland. Farewell dinner at Hotel Arctic.

Day 5: WALK ON ICE Early morning airport transfer and flight from Ilulissat to Kangerlussuaq, a place with fertile mountains, beautiful lakes and turbulent glacier rivers. A guided 4-wheel-drive tour takes you through an Arctic desert, along rivers, through old glacier valleys and over small mountains directly to the Inland Ice Cap. If weather and road conditions are suitable you have the chance to walk on ice. Along the way we make several photo stops and walk to some viewpoints overlooking the fantastic Arctic landscape. Stay one night at Hotel Kangerlussuaq. Day 6: ARCTIC WILDLIFE TOUR The world's biggest population of wild

musk oxen are living within close range of Kangerlussuaq. We drive by minibus to an area where it is possible to see musk oxen and reindeer.
