AN INTRODUCTION TO GUÐMUNDUR JÓNASSON TRAVEL For more than 80 years, our company has hosted travellers from all corners of the world. Through Guðmundur Jónasson Travel, many have returned time and time again together with their families and friends, to experience Iceland’s unique, beautiful nature and historical traditions. Our dedicated team never lose sight of the ‘personal touch’, and work hard to ensure that the varied and interesting itineraries offered by Guðmundur Jónasson Travel provide fully for the needs of today’s travellers. Our company was formed in 1929, when our founder Guðmundur Jónasson obtained his first driving licence. Fascinated by the seldom explored interior, he ventured out to the highlands and even onto the glaciers, opening up a whole new world to the 20th century traveller. Since he passed away in 1985, his family has continued to share his love and enthusiasm for Iceland, and is committed to introducing fascinating tours and adventures for everyone to enjoy. GUÐMUNDUR JÓNASSON A PERSONAL REFLECTION 1909 – 1985 Guðmundur, the founder of Guðmundur Jónasson Travel, was not content with Iceland’s limited number of roads in the 1930´s, so he pioneered his own. His travels in the highlands and on Iceland’s glaciers are legendary and today’s travellers are his beneficiaries. When NASA chose Iceland as their training ground for the first moon landing because of the lunar style landscape, they chose Guðmundur to show the way. He teamed up with Sir Edmund Hillary, guiding him when he visited Iceland after his ascent of Mt. Everest. Those who travel with us today travel in his footsteps and we hope they share his love for this Land of Ice and Fire called Iceland.

Wintertime in Iceland Do you have an image of a cold and dark Icelandic Winter? Well, then it is time to amend this image. Winter in Iceland is neither as cold as most people imagine it to be, nor is it only dark. A warm ocean current called the Golf Stream keeps the temperature around 0°Celcius, which is often warmer than what you might encounter in New York or on Continental Europe. In fact, a sunny day in December can feel warmer than a rainy day in July! Towards the end of September when the busy touristic Icelandic summer has ebbed down and with the arrival of the first snow of the season, Iceland transforms into a white dreamland. The sun dangles along the horizon, stretching sunsets and sunrises far into the day. The daylight has a soft quality during winter time and the star-sown night might seem only long and dark until the Northern Lights appear in the sky. The visual contrasts in the landscape are sharpened and the land appears to be even more dramatic than during summer: Lakes and waterfalls freeze, but the geothermal fields steam nonetheless, revealing the Hot Spot underneath Iceland. Needless to say, the pleasure of relaxing in a naturally heated hot pot is at its best during the cold season. If the auroras happen to dance across the nightly sky while sitting in a warm bath – the serenity of an Icelandic winter is complete. Active travellers shall also not get bored during winter. Snowshoe walks, ski tours, ice climbing, hiking on the glacier, snowmobiling, or just exploring the land in a super jeep – there is plenty to do. While the puffins have flown to warmer climates, the orcas arrive in the ocean around Iceland during the colder season. The art scenes flourish during winter and many cultural events in Reykjavík shorten the nights: popular music festivals as Iceland Airwaves and Sonar Reykjavík attract thousands of people to the northernmost capital of the world. The Winter Light Festival, the Museum Night, and the Design March are part of the visual art festivals taking place, and for gourmets the Food and Fun Festival is a must. If you choose December to be your season, you shall be rewarded by a festive pre-Christmas atmosphere: meet the 13 “Icelandic Santa-clauses” called Yule Lads and join the New Year‘s celebration – yes, December might be the coldest and darkest time of the year, but it is also the most social time of the year. Do not underestimate the beauty of an Icelandic Winter and come visit us!

NORTHERN LIGHTS EXPLORATION

BEST SELLER TOUR IN 2012, 2013, 2014 AND 2015 Experience the best of Iceland’s winter! Our Northern Lights Exploration series are designed to include the highlights of Iceland and aim to maximize the chances of seeing the elusive Northern Lights. In addition to a seven night stay with breakfast, this program includes our special six night Northern Lights Academy, a combination of evening presentations, lectures, film and guided searches for the Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights. Experience Icelandic winter as good as it gets. Head to the countryside: from the regions of Snæfellsnes Peninsula in the west to the Vatnajökull glacier in the southeast. Profit to search for the Aurora Borealis away from the big city lights. HIGHLIGHTS and EXPERIENCES: Climb a volcano crater and walk between two continental tectonic plates Visit a traditional shark farmer, turf farmsteads and churches Relax in the Blue Lagoon and learn about living next to Eyjafjallajökull volcano See Icelandic horses, taste freshly baked hot spring bread and enjoy a fjord cruise Six evenings Northern Lights Academy Program offered in two group sizes: maximum 14 or 45 persons

Day 1: WELCOME TO ICELAND Individual transfer by FLYBUS shuttle from Keflavik airport to Reykjavík.

Day 2: REYKJAVIK CITY TOUR & BORGARFJÖRÐUR SAGA VALLEY Meet our tour guide and start with a Reykjavík city tour. Then we head west. Borgarfjörður is known as the Saga valley because of its many important historical events. We get a chance to climb a volcano crater and get warmed at Europe's most powerful hot spring. Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls pouring from beneath a wide lava field. We spend two nights in Borgarnes, West Iceland. The afternoon includes a lecture about Northern Lights. After dinner, we step into the hotel garden in search of the Northern Lights followed by a hot cup of chocolate or tea.

Day 3: SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA & FJORD CRUISE We travel to the picturesque fishing town of Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula for a cruise in the Breiðafjörður fjord. A uniquely Icelandic “treat“ awaits us at Bjarnarhöfn, where they make Hákarl - the fermented shark. Naturally, once darkness falls, we are out in the hotel garden to chase the Northern Lights and to soak in the hotel’s outdoor hot tubs.

Day 4: GOLDEN CIRCLE, GEOTHERMAL TASTE & ICELANDIC HORSES Today we travel along the scenic shores of Hvalfjörður fjord and turn inland to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We continue to Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir geothermal fields, where you can taste freshly baked hot spring bread, geothermally boiled eggs and herring. In the afternoon, we visit a horse stable and a geothermal greenhouse, before we reach the accommodation in South Iceland. Tonight’s search for the elusive Northern Lights is amidst the peace and stillness of rural Iceland.

Day 5: NATURAL WONDERS OF SOUTH ICELAND & EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL VOLCANO Today we travel along the South coast. At the Eyjafjalla-

visible in the northern sky from September through April when the sky is clear and free of clouds. The tour is dependent on weather and therefore sightings are not guaranteed. Like many natural wonders, it is an ephemeral spectacle – the Northern Lights may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event. For the best photos we recommend using a tripod.

jökull Information Center we learn about living next to a glacier and an active volcano. Skógafoss waterfall is 60 meters high and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. It is near one of Iceland's finest folk museums with turf-built houses. Next we take a stroll on the black lava beach at Reynisfjara in South Iceland. We spend 2 nights in the Vatnajökull National Park region, located in complete darkness and ideal for Northern Lights search.

Day 6: SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK & VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER Today’s program: glaciers, ice and icebergs. We travel to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs, and we explore the extraordinary site and might see seals swimming in arctic waters. In the afternoon we visit the tiny turf church at Hof and spend time at Europe’s largest national park, which has Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment, and Europe's largest glacier. In the evening enjoy a film presentation about the Northern Lights as part of the Northern Lights Academy program. Be careful not to go to bed too soon in this remote and quite location or you may just miss out one more chance of seeing the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky.

THE LAND OF NORTHERN LIGHT

A SHORT WINTER TRIP TO THE ICELANDIC COUNTRYSIDE During the day we explore Southwest Iceland, known for its natural wonders and cultural sights. See glittering glaciers, snow-clad mountains, giant lava fields and steaming hot springs. Bathe in the mineral rich geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, walk on a black lava beach, visit Icelandic horses on their farm and travel close to the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano. This short getaway to Iceland offers insight into Iceland's nature and cultural life, with two nights in Iceland's capital and two nights in South Iceland, an ideal location for the search for the Northern Lights.

Day 1, TUE or THU: WELCOME TO ICELAND FLYBUS shuttle on arrival from Keflavík International airport to Reykjavík.

Day 2, WED or FRI: REYKJAVIK CITY TOUR, THE BLUE LAGOON & REYKJANES PENINSULA The tour guide shows the group the highlights of

Iceland's exciting capital city. Then head out to the Reykjanes Peninsula with its hot springs, mountains, bird cliffs, light houses and fishing villages. At the end of the day, soak in the warm mineral rich waters of the Blue Lagoon. We stay two nights in simple cottages in South Iceland. There is an option to upgrade to studio rooms at the Stracta Hotel in Hella. In the evening, we hear about the Northern Lights from our tour guide at Árhús Cottages. Naturally, once darkness falls, you are out in the garden waiting for the Northern Lights.

Day 3, THU or SAT: SOUTH ICELAND Today we head along the south coast and reach the active volcano beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. We stop at the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which plunges from the mountain. There is a trail that goes behind the falling water and offers interesting views, if you are prepared to get wet! At the seaside, you can stroll on the black lava beach to see the amazing bird cliffs at Reynisfjara near Vík. In the afternoon visit one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country – the 60 meter high Skógafoss waterfall. It is next to one of Iceland's finest folk museums, which contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic artifacts from Iceland's past and several turf-built houses. In the evening there is another presentation about the Northern Lights. If the night is clear, you might see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens in dramatic shapes, colours, patterns and sizes. But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event. our tour guide and start the escorted tour program with a short introduction to Icelandic geology while watching a striking film at Reykjavik Volcano House documenting the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull and Fimmvörðuháls in 2010, which caused millions of people to be stranded worldwide as thousands of flights were cancelled. These films give a good insight into the general geology and volcanology of Iceland. At the Volcano House you can experience a hands-on geological exhibition and examine various pieces of pumice, ash and lava from Icelandic volcanoes. Later on we depart Reykjavik for Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. Þingvellir is one of Iceland's most fascinating historical and geological places. The site is situated on the boundaries of the tectonic plates of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The faults and fissures of the area make the rifting of the earth's crust evident. Exploring the hot springs at Geysir is like watching a geography lesson in real life: natural springs bubble away in the ground until the pressure becomes too high and explode spectacularly. Geysir and Strokkur are the two biggest of the geysers there. While Geysir no longer is active, Strokkur still spouts every 5 to 15 minutes to the delight of visitors. Next we travel to Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into a canyon. The explosion crater called Kerið is filled with water and resembles an ancient amphitheatre. In the evening, you hear about the Northern Lights from our tour guide. Naturally, once darkness falls, we are out in the garden waiting for the Northern Lights. We offer you a selection of hotels and room types and you decide where and how long you want to stay. You might even take a Viking Challenge and camp in a tent for one or two nights under the freezing Arctic sky. During the day we show you the South Coast and the Golden Circle sights. In the evening we venture out and chase the Northern Lights from our Aurora Camp, either on foot or by bus, depending on the aurora forecast. The Aurora Chaser South Iceland is an ideal short-break or add-on program.

and Reykjavik. Private Aurora bus transfer between Reykjavik and the Aurora Camp, either in the morning or in the evening.

AURORA CHASER EVENING PROGRAM & AURORA CAMP Every evening after 21:00 our Northern Light evening program begins at the Aurora Camp. We have the latest Aurora and weather forecasts on hand and decide where to go. This can be a short guided torch walk or a chase for the Northern Lights by bus which can be up to two hours away, where the conditions are better. There is the occasional evening when the conditions are bad and the chances of seeing Northern Lights are low. On these nights we watch Northern Light movies, relax in Icelandic hot tubs and have other Northern Lights activities planned. The Aurora Camp is the base for our night activities and to enjoy Icelandic winter fun. Join torch walks, ghost story tours, cave visits, geothermal treats, Aurora education, snow games and snow shoe walks under the Arctic sky and warm up with hot chocolate, green tea and cookies. The Aurora alarm wakes you up should the Northern Lights appear after midnight.

DAY PROGRAM TUESDAYS, THURSDAYS AND SATURDAYS: GOLDEN CIRCLE We head to the geothermal area of Geysir, where you watch a geography lesson in real life: natural springs bubble away in the ground until the pressure becomes too high and explode spectacularly. Geysir and Strokkur are the two biggest of the geysers there. While Geysir is no longer active, Strokkur still spouts every 5 to 15 minutes to the delight of visitors. Next we travel to Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into a canyon. We continue to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. Þingvellir is one of Iceland's most fascinating historical and geological places. The site is situated on the boundaries of the tectonic plates of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The faults and fissures of the area make the rifting of the earth's crust evident. We then return to our Aurora Camp for the evening program.

NORTHERN LIGHTS The Northern Lights are visible in the northern sky from September through April when the sky is clear and free of clouds.

Optional snowmobile tour from Gullfoss, instead of visiting Þingvellir National Park.

DAY PROGRAM MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS: SOUTH COAST We explore the Icelandic South Coast. We pass the infamous volcano Eyjafjallajökull and continue to Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. Further east we pass the glacier Mýrdalsjökull. Afterwards we take a stroll on the black lava beach and along the bird cliffs at Reynisfjara in South Iceland, followed by a photo stop in the village of Vík. On the way back to the Aurora Camp we stop at the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Optional glacier hike, instead of visiting Reynisfjara beach and Vik.
