SMALL TOWN

BIG ADVENTURE Columbus has something for everyone.

N

estled in the heart of the Lower Colorado River Valley and South Central Texas, Columbus is one of the oldest settlements in central Texas, first settled in 1823 by Stephen F. Austin and his "Old 300". Situated between two bends of the Colorado River with a population of around 3,600, a vibrant central business district, historic Downtown National Register District, scenic parks, and abundant opportunities for travelers to enjoy everything from nature to history, Columbus is your gateway to adventure—and to the Houston-Austin-San Antonio Corridor. Whether you are stopping for a brief visit or making Columbus your new home, you’ll be impressed by everything from our historic 1890 courthouse to our local hospital, recently added to the list of the top 100 rural hospitals in America. Opportunities abound for adventure here—from canoeing the river to climbing to the top of the old water tower—now the historic War Memorial Museum. Shop at stores like Potter’s Western Store—one of the last remaining independently-owned western stores in Texas—Donna’s Attic, or Grand Oaks Antiques & Gifts, or eat at classic spots like Dairy Cone. Columbus has it all.

Colorado County Courthouse

Dilue Rose Harris House

The courthouse is the fourth courthouse and was built in 1890. It is a combination Classical Revival and Greek Revival style. The central bell tower and roof were destroyed in the 1909 storm. They were replaced with the current central domed Tiffany-style skylight.

Stafford Opera House

Ira and Dilue Rose Harris built the house in 1858. It is of concrete construction and boasts a basement that originally had a dirt floor. Dilue participated in the “Runaway Scrape” at the end of the Texas Revolution and wrote her “Reminiscences.”

Ehrenwerth Building

Robert Stafford built the Second Empire-style Stafford Opera House in 1886. Originally, it housed the Stafford Bank downstairs and a flat-floored opera house upstairs. The white two-story house next door was the house Bob Stafford built for his family.

This is the dominant building on the west side of Milam Street. The 1873 two-story commercial structure was built of bricks from a local kiln in Italianate style.

The Carriage Step

Built in 1860’s of cypress wood on land owned by Robert Robson, this charming house is now a tea room and bed and breakfast. Contact the owners to make your reservations.

War Memorial Museum Townsend-West House

This house was built by Marcus and Annie Townsend in 1890 and is Victorian in style with Eastlake embellishments. Townsend was a state representative and senator and sponsored the bill to buy the Alamo. Thurmond and Erma West bought the house in 1906. Call B & B owners for interior tour.

The water tower was built in 1883 and has 32-inch walls. It served as water tower and firehouse until 1912. It now houses the War Memorial Museum operated by the Shropshire-Upton Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Mewes-Gant House

This house was built in nearby Alleyton by Rudolph Mewes (pronounced “Mavis”). In 1978, it was brought from the Gants and moved to Columbus and restored by preservationist Laura Ann Rau. The original German stenciling can still be seen on the walls of this quaint little house.

Brunson Building

Charles Brunson built this building in 1891 and used it as a saloon until about 1919. He built the adjacent building in 1896. It retains much of the original Victorian styling.

Visitor’s Guide 2019

Old Brick Store

Built in 1850, this is the oldest brick building in Columbus. It was owned and occupied by Thomas A. Harris, a physician, from 1850 until 1867. The Fehrenkamps operated a grocery store in this location from 1912 until 1979.

Abram Alley Log Cabin

The two-room cabin was built in 1836 after the Alleys returned from the “Runaway Scrape.” It is constructed of oak logs found near the Alley property at the Atascocita Crossing south of Columbus. It was moved to Columbus and restored in 1976.

Eagle Lake:

As the Goose Hunting Capital of the World, Eagle Lake is a paradise for hunting, fishing, and all things outdoors. Enjoy the beautiful nature and birding trail around Eagle Lake, or stroll the city’s quaint downtown and take advantage of great shops and restaurants. Eagle Lake is also a paradise for railroad lovers! Check out the Prairie Edge Museum and the historic Eagle Lake Depot Museum, which includes a working telegraph and working model railroad.

Sheridan:

A great place for family fun, Sheridan features internationally-known Splashway Water Park and Campground, a great day of fun for families. Take a break from sightseeing and slide down the water slides and then try a delicious sno cone—or a sno cone with ice cream in a pineapple!—from R&R Shaved Ice, or a great burger at Sheridan’s famous Dairy Delight.

Weimar:

Willkommen to Weimar! You won’t find a more precious, small, 1870s railroad town in Texas than Weimar. Proud of its German and Czech heritage, Weimar is a great place to stroll the sidewalks and shop, or try some of the world-famous delights at Kasper’s Market downtown. A nine-hole golf course, parks, and more provide fun for the whole family. Don’t forget to check out the Weimar Heritage Museum downtown.

Garwood:

Tiny Garwood, a town known for the rows of picturesque rice dryers that line the edges of the area, offers art galleries and shopping.

Schulenburg:

Make Columbus your headquarters to visit Texas’ historic painted churches, several of which are located in and around Schulenburg. Don’t forget to check out some of the city’s great museums including the The Stanzel Model Aircraft Museum and Schulenburg Historical Museum.

Houston:

From Space Center Houston to museums ranging from the Houston Museum of Art to the Buffalo Soldier Museum, or catching a Texans or Astro’s game, visit Houston but stay in Columbus!

Call the Columbus Chamber of Commerce for more information at (979) 732-8385 or visit their website, ColumbusTexas.org

SEALY & SAN FELIPE:

Stephen F. Austin State Park and the Texas Historical Commission’s San Felipe de Austin Museum are two places you don’t want to miss when you are visiting Columbus. Take a leisurely drive to the Sealy area, and visit a museum that includes an original log cabin relocated from near Columbus inside the museum! View the scenery and picnic at Stephen F. Austin State Park in Sealy.

Hallettsville:

Visit the Lavaca County Historical Museum in Hallettsville, along with the county’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Lavaca County Historical Museum includes many interesting exhibits including the Texas State Championship High School Rodeo Exhibit, and the South Central Texas Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame!

ELLINGER:

Hungry? Then you need a kolache from Hruska’s in Ellinger! A short drive outside Columbus, you can find some of the best kolaches—a traditional Czech pastry with both savory and sweet fillings—brought to Texas by Czechoslovakian immigrants in the 1880s, with a Texas twist! Don’t forget to check out Peter’s Barbecue in Ellinger for more great food.

La GRANGE:

The Texas Quilt Museum, Monument Hill and Kriesche Brewery State Historic Site, the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, and Texas Heroes Museum at the Old Fayette County Jail are just a small sample of things to do in La Grange.

Call the Columbus Chamber of Commerce for more information at (979) 732-8385 or visit their website, ColumbusTexas.org
