2019 Colorado County Fair Parade Marshal The Board of Directors of the Colorado County Fair Association is pleased to honor the memory and life of Cody Wayne Thompson by naming him as honorary parade marshal for our 41st annual Colorado County Fair Parade. The parade will be held Saturday, Sept. 7 in downtown Columbus at 10 a.m. with Cody’s wife, Shelley Boenisch Thompson, and their girls Faith, Ria and Brynn - leading the parade. The parade will proceed down Milam Street to Walnut, turning left and continuing on Walnut until the procession reaches the vicinity of the Veterans Memorial Center and the Columbus Swimming Pool. Cody Thompson lived in Colorado County most of his life, except when he moved away for a bit during college. The same goes for his wife, Shelley. They each participated in the Colorado County Fair when they were growing
up. Shelley began showing animals in 1993 and Cody in 1996. Cody and Shelley Thompson married and settled in Garwood. Cody was involved in the agriculture industry most of his life, working at his father’s crop dusting business, ANF Air Service, doing his dream job of flying for the last seven years. Cody passed away in May of this year, and is greatly missed by his family and friends and many others in the community. In addition to his work and being a loving husband and father, he was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 3371, the Garwood Lions Club, Crop Dusters United, the Texas Agricultural Aviation Association and the National Agricultural Aviation Association.
Cody and Shelley have three daughters, Faith, Ria and Brynn. Ten-year-old Faith has been showing animals at the Fair since 2017, and her sisters will do the same when they are old enough. Cody and Shelley showed animals at the Fair for many years and they have passed along that tradition to their daughters. They have supported and attended the Fair’s annual Ragin’ Cajun Crawfish boil, and they have also supported the annual Go-Texan Scholarship Fundraiser. During his life Cody was always willing to help others and he did so whenever and however he could. The Fair selected Cody as
this year’s parade marshal because of the life he lived. We are also honored to have had his long-time participation in and service to the Fair. We hope that naming Cody as our 2019 parade marshal in some small way honors his life and his family. Please participate in the 41st Annual Colorado County Fair Parade, and give a wave, handshake or salute to Shelley, Faith, Ria and Brynn Thompson!

Helicopter rides Beekeeping Exhibit Get airborne and see the fair, as well as portions of Colorado County from the air by taking a helicopter ride during the 41st annual Colorado County Fair! Helicopter rides will be $35 per person, and will be available during most fair operating hours.
Behlen Bees will be a featured exhibition at the Colorado County Fair this year. Learn about beekeeping and the importance of bees to agriculture, gardening and the environment.
41st Annual Western and Fine Arts Exhibits The Fair Board encourages you to visit Founders Hall, formerly known as the exhibit hall/fine arts building, and enjoy over an expected 1,000 drawings and other anticipated artworks created by local school age children and artists of all ages that will be exhibited at the 2019 Colorado County Fair. The western art exhibit will feature all manner of western lore, from cowboys and cowgirls, horses, rodeo and circus scenes, to landscapes, sunsets and other western-themed pieces. Western art entrants might also be inspired by the Fair’s 2019 theme “New Trails, Old Friends.” These entries will be hung for viewing at the Fair and will likely put you in the western
frame of mind and will definitely make you smile! The Western art and fine art exhibitions and judging at the Colorado County Fair began in 1979 to highlight the arts in the area. County fairs focus on many areas, and the arts is an area that allows people who may not directly participate in agriculture or livestock events to be involved in the Fair. The Western art division is for school age children who live in Colorado County, while the fine arts division is for Colorado County residents of any age. The rules and guidelines for the Western art division are similar to those of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo art pro-
gram, after which our Fair’s program was fashioned. Western art entries must be “western” themed. All school districts in Colorado County are invited to submit entries. Each Western art entry is awarded a ribbon, be it white, red or blue. Several finalist rosettes will be awarded in each of the three divisions: Elementary (pre-K through 5th grade), Junior (6th through 8th grades) and Senior (9th through 12th grades). From the finalists in each division, Best of Show and Reserve Best of Show winners will be chosen. There is no entry fee for Western art. The fine arts division is open to all ages, and unlike the Western art division, the
artwork may portray any subject. For fine arts entries, a pre-registration card must be completed and turned in, and a per-piece entry fee much be paid, except for preschool age. Each age division is judged separately, with paintings and drawings separate from sculpture and constructions. Please see the Fine Arts and Special Events catalog for more details on both the fine art and Western art shows. An electronic copy of the catalog is available on the Fair’s website at coloradocountyfair. org under the Activities tab; go to Fine Arts & Special Events and then click on the 2019 Fair Fine Arts and Special Events catalog. All Western art and
fine art entries will be accepted in Founders Hall at the Colorado County fairgrounds on Tuesday, Sept. 3 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. No late entries will be eligible for judging. The art will be judged Wednesday morning and be on display for public viewing beginning Thursday afternoon. The art will remain on display throughout the Fair, with photographs taken of Best of Show and Reserve Best of Show winners beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8. If you have questions or would like more information, please call Melissa Parks (Western Art) at (713) 444-9059 or Deborah Petrosky (Fine Arts) at (979) 733-2802.

The Garwood Lions Club will host the 13th annual Colorado County Fair Academic Rodeo during the 41st annual Colorado County Fair. The idea of a way to challenge those students who don’t show an animal during the fair was hatched by Bill Carpenter, and has been moderated by himself and emcee Tom Kallina. For several years, the event was held under the entertainment pavilion, but was moved into the exhibit hall a few years ago.
The academic rodeo is enjoyed by those who attend in cool, air conditioned comfort. Mr. Carpenter says, “It is a fun event to academically challenge the youth, and for anyone who has watched the competition, you know it is entertaining.” Please make plans to come out on Friday, Sept. 6 at 9 a.m. and cheer on your favorite team! High school academic rodeo begins at 9 a.m., and junior high will begin at 10 a.m.

Entertainment - Friday MASIZZO After belonging for years in an Intocable group on the electric bass and recording the first albums of that group,Albert Ramírez decided to give way and open a new path with his ideas and concerns. In this way Masizzo was born in the city of Dilley Tx in 1997. Now, Albert Ramírez on the accordion and 2nd voice, with his brother Bryan Ramírez on the electric bass and backing vocals, decide to form this excellent and successful group, being true fans of Mexican regional music. Thus, totally convinced that his thing was to record with said musical style, in ’97 they released their first album entitled “The Other Half” , where the song “I Love You So Much, So Much” emerges, being this theme that opened the doors to “The Excellence of Northern Music” throughout Mexico and the United States. In the year 1998, they launched their 100 percent album where they won their first gold disc and platinum disc, with just one year the group. With 22 years, Masizzo has managed to obtain important awards such as “Revelation Group of the Year”, 3 gold records, 3 platinum records, Texano music awards, among others. This in addition to selling thousands of
copies of its 11 productions. With the passage of time, Masizzo decides to renew without leaving his unmistakable style and he is injected with experience and youth in his voice, with the entry of Isaías Ramírez in the bass fifth and first voice, being the son of Albert Ramírez. With this painting, the most recent titled “Do Not Say No” of Wences Romo’s authorship is recorded, which a few days after leaving the subject on digital platforms has liked a lot and is being placed on the popularity charts very quickly.
CCFA Pen of Three Heifers The Colorado County Fair pen of three heifers contest is designed to provide an opportunity for the personal growth and development of youth exhibitors through the ownership, care and showing of commercial heifers. Members of Colorado County 4-H, FFA and Junior FFA clubs are eligible to take part in the contest. The program has four key parts: record keeping, public speaking, written examination and grading of cattle. Each program part is judged by a set of judges knowledgeable in that area. The champion overall pen of three is the total combined score from each section with maximum scores possible of record book worth 15 points, public speaking 35 points, examination 20 points and grading of the cattle 30 points. The record keeping component includes physical recording of project information, analysis of data and presentation of a record book. The exhibitor describes their project and answers questions about their heifers and beef animal husbandry in the public speaking part of the contest.
Exam questions are related to the beef industry. The exhibition of the project at the fair shows the results of the ownership, selection and care given by the exhibitor to their beef heifers. Adults (family and others) play an important role as they guide and assist the exhibitors with their projects. This interaction strengthens family bonds and provides an opportunity to meet and gain knowledge from a wider range of people than might otherwise occur. The heifers are required to be purchased in Colorado County or adjoining counties and are sold during the fair’s junior sale. This aspect of the project encourages the improvement of local beef herds. There are 11 pen of three entries at this year’s fair. Judging is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6 and projects will be offered for sale Saturday, Sept. 7 beginning at 1 p.m. The heifers are suitable replacement heifers in commercial beef operations. Come meet these young people with an interest in the beef cattle industry and support them at the sale.

he Colorado County Fair is proud to support our local Relay for Life team members who come out on Friday, Sept. 6 and inform our fair goers about their fundraisers and events. Remember - wear pink! The American Cancer Society Relay for Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to end cancer. Funds raised through the events enable the Society to help people facing the disease today, educate people about how to reduce their risk for cancer or detect it early when it’s the easiest to treat, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations. But our work is not done. By becoming a Relay for Life event leadership vol-
