Salute to our veterans From The Navasota Examiner Each year the Navasota Examiner publishes a special section to honor veterans but the appreciation this newspaper has for the brave men and women that serve this country extends far beyond a yearly special section. Each soldier honored in this section has more than a name and military ranking that makes them special, their stories of who they are and the sacrifices they have made is what makes them heroes. Most of the submissions listed are from family members that want to ensure their loved one receives the recognition they deserve. What makes a great soldier is much more than the ability to handle weapons, track down enemies, fly planes, lead troops etc. Great soldiers share common traits: selflessness- they take an oath to defend the United States regardless whether they know everyone they are defending personally, regardless of race or gender to ensure the freedoms our country is founded on; sacrifice - soldiers miss birthdays, holidays, time with their loved ones and the daily things most take for granted such as a roof over their head and a comfortable bed; dedication - when most see the mountain in front of them as
too tough to climb, as a soldier they see it as just another obstacle they must overcome to finish their mission. Many soldiers have given the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield or have lost fellow soldiers along the way. To those soldiers who gave that sacrifice, there isn’t a means to pay them back or a tribute heartfelt enough to honor them. The war never truly ends for veterans that have fought for their country. Many have suffered physical and emotional ailments that will always take a toll on their life. Pain of war can cause nightmares, lead to drug or alcohol addictions and in many instances end in suicide. Never forget the sacrifices made by veterans and find ways to assist them through prayer, contributions to veteran organizations, employing veterans and honoring them throughout the year with a simple thank you. As the holiday season approaches, we salute the veterans of Grimes County and their families. We keep them close to our hearts especially those who are separated from their loved ones and those whose loved ones gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Thank you for your service!
