Liberty Jubilee began with the Sesquicentennial Liberty held its first Jubilee in April 1986. That was the year we learned the meaning of the word sesquicentennial, whether or not we learned how to pronounce or spell it. It was the 150th year since Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836, and the first Jubilee was held in Liberty to mark the occasion. The festivities that year included a parade, the viewing of a replica of the Alamo, and the dedication of the Jubilee Pavilion behind the Humphreys Cultural Center. With a few typographical errors corrected, and perhaps a few other added, The Vindicator’s April 23, 1986 report on the event, written by Britt Hall, reads as follows: LIBERTY — Liberty area residents turned out in force Saturday for Liberty’s Jubilee Day celebration in honor of Texas’ 150th birthday as citizens across the state remembered the Battle of San Jacinto as the most important day in the state’s history. The highlight of the day was a dedication ceremony for the Vara Faye Martin Daniel Jubilee Pavilion, which was completed Friday by Busby Construction Company of Dayton. Gov. Bill Daniel, Liberty Mayor C. Scott

Back in 1986, the employees of the Lyondell Petrochemical Plant in Sheldon, owned by ARCO, created a reproduction of the Alamo mission, and ARCO arranged to have it moved to Liberty for the first Jubilee, where it is seen here being erected by members of the Liberty High School building trades class.

Parker, Ellis and Emily Iverson cut red, white and blue ribbons to officially open the pavilion as Mrs. Daniel looked on. The pavilion, which is estimated to cost $32,500, was a major project of the Liberty Sesquicentennial Commission. “Governor Bill represents the leaders in the history of our state while Mayor parker represents the leaders of our state now. Ellis and Emily represent the future of Texas,”

said Linda Thompson, general chairman of the Liberty Sesquicentennial Commission, while introducing the ceremony’s participants. Parker honored several citizens for their efforts during the past two years on behalf of the Sesquicentennial Commission, including Thompson, Lamar Iverson and Sandy Pickett. Parker also named Graeme Brighton, a visiting counselor from Naraacorte, South Australia, as an honorary member of the Liberty City Council and presented him with a medallion in remembrance of the day. The Jubilee Pavilion was named in honor of Mrs. Daniel because of a large contribution, in excess of $20,000, by Gov. Daniel to help fund the construction. The other funds were raised by selling 72 plaques to local businesses and Thompson said these would be installed on the walls as soon as they are all completed. A marker at the entrance to the pavilion honors Mrs. Daniel for her efforts during the past six decades to promote music and education in the Liberty area. She is a former music instructor for Liberty ISD and has played the piano for many years for such organizations as the Liberty Rotary Club and the Lions Club. The Jubilee Pavilion, which is located in the southeast corner of the Humphrey’s Cultural Center complex, is designed to accommodate many types of performances by musical groups and the large floor is emblazoned with a large circular mosaic depicting the long history of the state. A long list of local groups performed at the pavilion Saturday, including the Liberty High School stage band, Buddy Griffin and his Banjo Magic Band, the Trinity River Travelers square dance club, the Airliners gospel group, Ben Sterling and his Dixielanders and the Coyle Harrison quartet.

Gov. Daniel, long noted as a showman besides his activities as an attorney and philanthropist, demonstrated the use of the cow horn, ropes and whips to the children. A parade held Saturday morning included impressive floats built by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post, the Alabama-Coushata Indians, and many other groups. A large number of local politicians and political office-seekers also joined the parade. The throng of people was treated to many different sites, including craft demonstrations in horse hair weaving, sculpturing, chair weaving, imprinting, tatting and stained glass. The Liberty Art League also began their open show at the First Liberty National Bank and a spokesman for the group said entries would remain on display there for the rest of the week. The evening was closed with the final performance by the Valley Players of the musical “Texanna.”

Daniel Jubilee Pavilion vs. Daniel Park and Pavilion

Should anyone reading this be as perplexed as The Vindicator staff was this past week over where Gator Country will perform its Liberty Jubilee shows, here is a little clarification. Gator Country will perform at the Vara Faye Martin Daniel Jubilee Pavilion, not to be confused with the Vara Faye Martin Daniel Park and Pavilion. Anyone who wants to navigate the Liberty Jubilee will have to know his pavilions. The Jubilee Pavilion is behind the Humphreys Cultural Center. It was built

in 1986 for the first Liberty Jubilee. The lion’s share of the cost for constructing it was paid with a donation from Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel, and for that reason it was often called the Daniel Jubilee Pavilion for many years. Based on The Vindicator’s report on its dedication, it appears the full official name of it is the Vara Faye Martin Daniel Jubilee Pavilion. However, in 2005 another pavilion, along with a park, was dedicated as the

That pavilion is on the same square with City Hall, and was, until Friday, where The Vindicator staff thought Gator Country would be. It is not, at least not unless one of the gators gets loose and heads in that direction. Instead, at the pavilion in Daniel Park behind City Hall, Jubilee visitors will have the opportunity on Saturday to enjoy a jazz performance by J. R. Austin at 2 p.m. At the Jubilee Pavilion behind the Cultural Center on Saturday, Gator Country will have shows at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Jubilee music features local favorites

With their fiddler serving as our county judge for the past 3 years and their performing dozens of local shows every year, hardly anyone in Liberty County can now be unfamiliar with the Southern Breeze Band. The Southern Breeze Band is from Dayton and started in 1983. It is made up of Jay Knight on fiddle and mandolin, Carl Landrum playing lead guitar, Luther Sweeten on bass guitar, Luke Landrum on rhythm guitar, J. R. Ungles on drums and Ronald Lee on keyboard. The Southern Breeze Band will open the show Friday night at the Liberty Jubilee and will be followed on stage by the West of the Trinity Band. The West of the Trinity Band is also

from Dayton and is headed up by singer and songwriter Jason West, supported by Charles Pafford, David Galyon, Ralph Kresge and Ernest Gill. Besides their own original songs, they cover country, classic country and Texas country songs. Their sets often include their own songs, “Small Town in Texas,” “Crazy Life,” “Sacrifice” and “Floating Down the Guadalupe.” “We’re looking forward to next Friday,” West said last week. “It should be a fun night.” Saturday’s Jubilee line up begins with the Zach Givens Band, followed by RaaRaa and Da Zydeco Allstarz, then Bayou Boyz, and closing out the show will be RōZY.

Jubilee Karaoke

RōZY is the band Liberty Jubilee regulars will remember by their former name, StarFlightRocks. The band began as the very young sister duo of Zoe and Molly Flores of Rosenberg. With Zoe on guitar and Molly on drums, at the ages of 11 and 12, they won the 2013 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo “Rodeo Rockstar” contest. The duo is also now a trio, and in addition to covers of 80s pop songs, along with classic and alternative rock, we can expect to hear RōZY perform their own “Archer,” “Do You Know What It’s Like?” and “I Killed the Prom Queen.” Along with zydeco, Raa-Raa and Da Zydeco Allstarz perform southern soul, R&B, reggae, blues and jazz.

This year at Liberty Jubilee, The Valley Players present “Jubilee Karaoke,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Humphreys-Burson Theatre, inside the Cultural Center, across from the Liberty Municipal Library. For a $2 donation, you can come in from the heat and sing your heart out on stage, or just be part of the audience. All proceeds will benefit The Valley Players, Liberty’s own non-profit theatre company, bringing you “Beauty and the Beast” this spring, as well as other great shows to come.
