The Year of the Father of Logic 2016

Aristotle 2400 Years

«All human actions have one or more of these seven causes: chance, nature, compulsion, habit, reason, passion, and desire».

O

ne of the greatest of the ancient Athenian philosophers- pupil of Plato- teacher of Alexander the Great (384-322 BC)Aristotle Greek: Ἀριστοτέλης -Aristotélēs (384–322 BC) was a Greek philosopher and scientist born in the city of Stagira, Chalkidice, on the northern periphery of Classical Greece. His father, Nicomachus, died when Aristotle was a child, whereafter Proxenus of Atarneusbecame his guardian. At eighteen, he joined Plato's Academy in Athens and remained there until the age of thirty-seven (c. 347 BC). His writings cover many subjects including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, linguistics, politics and government – and constitute the first comprehensive system of Western philosophy. Shortly after Plato died, Aristotle left Athens and, at the request of Philip of Macedon, tutored Alexander the Great starting from 343 BC. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, "Aristotle was the first genuine scientist in history ... [and] every scientist is in his debt." Teaching Alexander the Great gave Aristotle many opportunities and an abundance of supplies. He established a library in the Lyceum which aided in the production of many of his hundreds of books. The fact that Aristotle was a pupil of Plato contributed to his former views of Platonism, but, following Plato's death, Aristotle immersed himself in empirical studies and shifted from Platonism to empiricism. He believed all peoples concepts and all of their knowledge was ultimately based on perception. Aristotle's views on natural sciences represent the groundwork underlying many of his works. Aristotle's views on physical science profoundly shaped medieval scholarship. Their influence extended into the Renaissance and were not replaced systematically until the Enlightenment and theories such as classical mechanics. Some of Aristotle's zoological observations, such as on the hectocotyl (reproductive) arm of the octopus, were

not confirmed or refuted until the 19th century. His works contain the earliest known formal study of logic, which was incorporated in the late 19th century into modern formal logic. In metaphysics, Aristotelianism profoundly influenced Judeo-Islamic philosophical and theological thought during the

15

Middle Ages and continues to influence Christian theology, especially the scholastic tradition of the Catholic Church. Aristotle was well known among medieval Muslim intellectuals and revered as "The First Teacher". His ethics, though always influential, gained renewed interest with the modern advent of virtue ethics. All aspects of Aristotle's philosophy continue to be the object of active academic study today. Though Aristotle wrote many elegant treatises and dialogues – Cicero described his literary style as "a river of gold" – it is thought that only around a third of his original output has survived.

32

The “Fragkomahalas” or “Fragkon” (“of the Franks”) is a neighborhood in the first municipal department (“Peerikaustos” Zone) of the municipality of Thessaloniki. Non-Greek European citizens have gathered there since the 19th century, and this is where the name of the neighborhood comes from. The catholic church of the Immaculate Conception of Holy-Mary,which the people of Thessaloniki call “Fragkoklisia”, church of the Franks, is situated in the center of the neighborhood. The Ottoman Bank used to be in this area, and today the Conservatory of Northern Greece is being housed in the same preserved building. In the last years,

many bars associated with civilization centers and many restaurants have opened in the streets of Syggrou, Valaoritou and LeontosSofou, which are frequented by youngsters, artists and students. Fine niches, restaurants, tidbit taverns and little commercial shops. Many stores of old Thessaloniki have been restored, so the waft of spices and exotic products is emitting behind the metallic blinds. Just like the old times. The “square of the seven streets” The Jewish people, merchants of dairy products, coffee and spices used to call the “Emporiou” (of commerce) square “Plaza di sietecalenzos”, because seven streets were leading to it. In 1900, before Thessaloniki became a part of the Greek nation, branches of big banks and stockbroking agencies where operating here, functioning with the capital provided by the rich commercial activity of the Balkans.

PATISSERIES CHATZIS

58

Since 1908

A magical journey of sweet recipes that are being lost in the depths of time begins every time you visit one of the patisseries of the Chatzispatisserie chain. The shop is dated back to 1908, when it made its first… debut in Thessaloniki. A century later - in 2008 – the… expansion took place in Athens with the purpose to let the people of the capital city taste the flavors of a different, sweeter time. Get ready then for a delicious acquaintance with the eastern syrup-desserts “Hanoummpourek”, baklava, “ekmekkantaif with kaimak”, “bezyrparmak” (the “fingers of the vizier” - traditional handmade pastry with warm syrup and cream filling), “seker pare” (semolina and almond dough with hot syrup on top), followed with the rest of wonderful creations. The small baklava pieces and the “samali” complement them in the best way. You can taste all this in a place that maintains its character and its appearance intact, in an authentic atmosphere of a café-patisserie. Chalkidiki

They say that nowhere in Greece can boast beaches like those of Halkidiki. The region has the perfect combination of that distinctive Greek light, unspoiled landscapes, colors and fragrances. And the glorious natural setting is complemented by the rich culinary fare of the region and the living religious traditions of its people, manifested in a host of feast days and other ceremonies and rituals. This is a place where all your senses will come to life, whether on the endless expanses of sand of the fashionable, cosmopolitan beaches, or in the intimacy of the many secluded bays and coves. The scent of the pine trees and the salt brine of the sea combine to relax the body and spirit, leaving you at peace to enjoy the grandeur of the regions famed sunrises and sunsets.

92 92

It is said that the great philosopher Aristotle loved the honey of Halkidiki, and you too will love the land and the rich produce of its gardens and orchards. The region is formed of three peninsulas or “feet, each with its own unique charm, history and magic. There is Kassandra, or Pallini, scene of the Battle of the Giants in ancient mythology Sithonia, a magical place of green forest and blue sea and Mt. Athos, the world’s only monastic state, home to twenty historic monasteries. Truly a place of dreams, and your dream has only just begun... Mount Athos architecture & art The architecture of the monasteries is of the typical Byzantine monastery morphology. All of them have great walls to protect them from invasions either by pirates or other conquerors.
