MUSEUM OF BYZANTINE CULTURE

THE MUSEUM OF BYZANTINE CULTURE AIMS IN PRESENTING VARIOUS ASPECTS OF LIFE DURING THE BYZANTINE AND POST BYZANTINE PERIODS: ART, IDEOLOGY, SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND RELIGION, AS WELL AS HOW HISTORICAL CHANGES AND THE POLITICAL SITUATION WERE AFFECTING PEOPLE’S EVERYDAY LIFE.

At the same time, the activity of the Department of Educational Programs, the good structure and function of the conservation laboratories and of the archaeological material storerooms, the provision of scientific know-how to the other Balkan countries, the organization of scientific meetings and conferences, as well as the editing and publishing work, render the museum into an exceptionally important center for the preservation, research and promotion of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine culture. Since the museum’s inauguration in 1994, an annual bulletin is published, the first of its kind by a Greek public museum. The Museum of Byzantine Culture was awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize for 2005, following the concurrent recommendation of the Council’s Committee for Culture, Science and Education. The founding of The Museum of Byzantine Culture and its official opening in 1994 in Thessaloniki, the most “Byzantine” city in the modern Greek state marks the end of a story that had begun long before, just after the city’s liberation in 1912. 25

In the area of Nea Paralia, one of the most popular, full of energy places of Thessaloniki, you’ll find the monument of the most famous and influential personalities of all times. A person that created a legend still heard until today. This is the monument of Alexander the 3rd, also known as “Alexander the Great”. One of the greatest military geniuses in history, Alexander the Great was born in 356 B.C. in Pella, Macedonia. The son of Philip of Macedon, who was an excellent Army General and organizer. His mother was Olympias, princess of Epirus. Alexander was the king of Macedonia who conquered much of the known world in the fourth century BC. His conquests spread Greek civilization eastward as far as India. He still lives today in the hearts Greeks, and is probably the most famous Greek ever born. In 1974 the statue of Alexander the Great on his famous horse Bucephalas was erected on the waterfront of Thessaloniki, near the

White Tower- equestrian. Creator of the statue is Greek sculptor Vangelis Moustakas. Today the monument of Alexander the Great is still located in one of the most popular areas of Thessaloniki, in Nea Paralia right by the sea. You will easily find it right after the city’s symbol, the White Tower and the Royal Theater, heading east. It is an impressive, six meters (20 ft.) tall monument that represents Alexander while riding his horse “Voukefalas” (Bucephalus), one of the most famous actual horses of antiquity. After an extended reconstruction that lasted two and a half years the entire waterfront area of Thessaloniki along with Nea Paralia transformed into a wonderful place, ideal for a relaxing walk, jogging or biking! Along with your visit to the monument you’ll also have the chance to see the newly created thematic parks and meet many Thessalonians in their daily activities, enjoy your coffee or watch a wonderful sunset!

It’s one of the prettiest areas of Thessaloniki with many traditional taverns, cafes and restaurants, with old houses, small alleys and beautiful views on the city and on the Thermaikos Gulf. Most restaurants are located on the east side of Ano Poli, near the Portara (Great door) area. If you find yourself on the northwest side, don’t miss to visit Tsinari. The name derives from a plane tree (in Turkish cinar) that grows in the area and the namesake cafe located from the 19th century on the corner of Clio and Alexandra Papadopoulou st. Characteristic of the region is that in this we find many old houses and shops. Opposite the restaurant there is a fountain from the Ottoman period, while just over one another to the point that existed until 1925 Tsinarli Mosque. The area was in the 20s and reception center for refugees to find this many refugee houses built next to castles. By choosing Ano Poli you will indulge in a delicious meal and watch the sunset with a glass of retsina in your hand.

VLATADON MONASTERY (MONI VLATADON)

AGIA AIKATERINI CHURCH

The Vlatadon Monastery in the Ano Poli (Upper Town) is the only one left of the many that existed in Byzantine Thessaloniki and in the area surrounding it, in the foothills and on the slopes of Mount Hortiatis. It was founded in the middle of the 14th century by the Vlataioi brother monks, possibly with the support of Anna Palaiologue, who was in Thessaloniki at that time. The panorama from the monastery looks out over the city, reaching in the far distance the peaks of Mount Olympus. Out of the old buildings of the monastery, only the chancery (14th century) remains, called “The church of the Transfiguration of the Savior” even though the monastery was actually dedicated to the Almighty. The church was built on the site of an older building, the frescoes and other elements dating from the 11th century. It’s amazing how the building and particularly the Catholic maintains the characteristics of the original building, despite the many repairs and restorations. The unique inner wall is a perfect example of the style of the second half of the 14th century. 64 Eptapirgiou St., Ano Poli, Thessaloniki T: +30 2310246349 The view from the surroundings of Vlatadom Monastery over the city of Thessaloniki is breathtaking.

Agia Aikaterini (13th century), characteristic of the architecture of the Macedonian School, is a cruciform church with a central dome and four smaller domes at the corners. It is an exceptionally elegant building with many interesting features. The church lies high up close to the Western walls of the Ano Poli (Upper Town) and has managed to preserve its external appearance in almost its original form with the domes supported over skillfully decorated arches. It is built of bricks and the work on the walls is wonderful. The skillful architecture of the brickwork, the marble pieces that have been incorporated (probably taken from an older building) and the enameled plates etc., give the walls the impression of embroidery. During the rule of the Turks, the church of Agia Aikaterini was one of many churches to be turned into mosques. lous& Sahtouri st., (in between) I Ano Poli, Thessaloniki I I:+30 2310 225 5801

RAILWAY MUSEUM

WATER SUPPLY MUSEUM Thessaloniki Water Supply Museum is in the Sfagia area near the city’s western entry point. The Museum is housed in what was once a pumping station of the Thessaloniki Water Supply and Sewerage Co., to which it belongs. The purpose of the museum is to educate the visitors in aspects of the history of the city’s water supply, and in the correct management of water supplies. The pumping station was built in the late 19th century (189094) at a distance of about 1,500m from the western walls of the historic city center. It was built entirely from construction materials imported from Belgium. The Thessaloniki Water Supply Museum has two halls where motor-machinery and electricity generators, old electricity circuit switchboards and huge pumping units are on display. The first one used to be the boiler room and had two steam-powered units which were used to pump water from 1892 until 1929. In this hall there is a detailed display showing how steam was produced to drive the steam engines in the pump house. In the second hall are the pumps, the first and second generation diesel engines (MAN and MIRRLEES respectively), and the BRUSH electricity generators, which were used to irrigate Thessaloniki until 1978. All the machinery is authentic, has been maintained and is in good working order. In fact, one of the machines is open at the side, so that visitors can see what happens in its interior when it is operating.

Thessaloniki Railway Museum is located at the west side of Thessaloniki, approximately 500 m after the overpass bridge of Monastiriou st. to the exit of the city and is housed in the renovated building of the former Military Station of OSE. The building had been constructed at the end of the 19th century (in particular from 1891 until 1894) when the city was part of the Ottoman Empire. It had been designed by the Italian architect Pierro Arigoni who had also designed the Casa Bianca building during 1911. In the station-master’s office inside the station building there is a map with all Greek railway lines marked on it, railway workers’ uniforms, railway workmen’s tools, personal belongings, technical manuals and details of all old steam engines and diesel engines belonging to the Greek railways. Thessaloniki Railway Museum is also home to some of the furnishings from the carriages of the former Greek royal family. In the museum courtyard there is a restaurant carriage from the renowned Orient Express, which is open to visitors.

KALAMARIA

Kalamaria is a municipality of the Thessaloniki Urban Area, located about 7 kilometres (4 miles) southeast of downtown Thessaloniki. The area was first settled by humans in prehistoric times, and remains from that settlement have been found around the Karabournaki cape. The name Kalamaria was first used in 1083 to denote the area southeast of Thessaloniki, including but not limited to the area of the present-day municipality. During the Byzantine and the Ottoman periods, the area was mostly uninhabited, except for a few fishing lodges. The first settlement was created in the early 1920s to house refugees from the Greek diaspora in Georgia and Asia Minor, who fled or were forcibly sent to Greece as a result of the Hellenic-Turkish War. As many as 100,000 refugees were relocated in Thessaloniki, primarily in the city’s suburbs. Refugees of Pontiac descent

97

were mainly relocated in Kalamaria, and the municipality’s population is predominantly of Pontiac descent to this this day. Though it was originally separated from the main City of Thessaloniki, the municipality has grown so much in the post-war period that the older physical boundaries are virtually non-existent. Nowadays, the border between the two municipalities exists purely for administrative purposes. Nea Krini is a district of the municipality of Kalamaria, Thessaloniki regional unit. The beach near Mikra Sports Center is often called Miami, after a local restaurant called “Miami”. Here you will find from fish taverns up to pizza restaurants in an environment filled with trees next to the sea. Aretsou district is upon the coast line of Kalamaria and applies to all tastes since it offers international and Greek cuisine as well as many cafeterias and bars.
