GLASGOW’S SEEDY ANOTHER GLASGOW NEWS EXCLUSIVE
Malcolm Macaskill
The Glasgow News is calling for a Police investigation into an unregistered food bank after receiving damning information from concerned members of the public. Allegations of threatening and violent behaviour, food going to waste and being sold have been aimed at the
organisation Glasgow’s Needy. The organisers, Darren and Andrew Carnegie came into the public eye in September this year when they organised a food drive at George Square following the post-referendum riots of the previous week. Since then, the Father and Son team have been attending rallies around Scotland campaigning for Social Justice and promoting Glasgow’s Needy. However, we can reveal that there is a dark hidden side to the Carnegies. We have spoken with former volunteers,
who wish to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, who have advised us that a substantial amount of the food that had been donated for those in need has gone to waste and been discarded. On occasions it has been given away to friends of the Carnegies. One source alleged that on one occasion, a business close to their former storage facility on Tollcross Road had called the Environmental Health Inspectors due to decomposing food being left out on the street in bin bags. The waste of food donations
and the questionable storage facilities are not the only negative aspects to surround the Carnegies. There have been reports of ‘hi-jacking’ rallies and demonstrations, as well as claims of acting in a threatening manner and threats of physical violence. We contacted Darren Carnegie to discuss these allegations, which he denied. When asked about the food wastage, he replied “absolute nonsense, not one piece of food has been wasted.”

Setback for brewery after third break-in Ross Swanson
The Arran Brewery’s new premises in Dreghorn, North Ayrshire has suffered yet another break in – the third in as many weeks. The unlucky brewers say that £60,000 worth of damages have occurred at the site - intended to become Scotland’s first Sake brewery - including: major water damage caused by lead being removed from a roof, copper boilers stolen from the site’s three buildings, and a boiler house being flooded. The break-ins at the former primary school happened shortly after Arran agreed to purchase the building from the council. Managing Director of Arran Brewey, Gerald Michaluk, said: “This is some-

thing we are not used to. You can leave your back door open on Arran with no fear of being robbed, everyone knows everyone and looks out for each other.
“Someone must know who these thieves are and I urge anyone with information to report it to the police so these people can be removed from society, for a short time at least.
“We have employed our first three staff but the break-ins continue and currently thieves are trying to steal kitchen equipment, this is all causing unbudgeted for work and if it continues will cause us delays in creating the over 30 jobs planned for the new facility.
“Our site is monitored by CCTV, which clearly was no deterrent, but as the police examine the images I hope they will help convict the culprits.
“If crime is a serious issue in the area its time the good citizens fight back and retake their neighbourhood from the criminals. “These boilers they stole are large and someone must have seen something, further they must have sold them somewhere.
“We now have an extra four cameras covering the site and SERCO monitoring the alarms. However, it will be our neighbours we will be relying on to report any suspicious activity so we can make the whole area a crime free zone”. The brewery plan to overcome the setbacks and add a visitor centre aiming to attract around 30,000 visitors a year to the area, which the company hopes will have a positive impact for tourism and other local businesses.
Phil Earle Proves a Hit with Ayrshire Teens Schoolchildren in South & East Ayrshire were treated to storytelling master classes by YA author Phil Earle last week as part of the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour. Phil talked to over 1300 children about the inspiration behind his novels and encouraged them to search for the stories that can be found in everyday life.
During his visits Phil gave hints and tips on creating believable characters, discussed his love for the underdogs that appear in many of his novels, signed copies of his books and even participated in a radio interview at one school, conducted in their on site state of the art recording studio.

We also asked him about an allegation, reported to us by several different sources, that he had been selling food to a catering contractor and to a ‘non-needy’ member of the public, again, Darren refuted these complaints “That is total nonsense, I’m in shock at hearing this, I actually can’t believe that has been said,” however, Darren did admit that he was aware of this claim as he had been contacted a few days prior regarding it. The mass of food that the generous people of Glasgow have donated to Glasgow’s Needy has seen other properly registered food banks suffer a decline in donations. One such organisation is Greater Maryhill Food Bank. We spoke with Julie Webster who advised us of her own concerns about the storage and distribution of food by Glasgow’s Needy. She told us that she was on the receiving end of threats from the Carnegies. Julie said that when she was first made aware of Glasgow’s Needy,
she attempted to make contact to offer assistance and the use of their commercially insured van to help transport food, however, the generous offer was not received well. Andrew Carnegie allegedly replied saying “Who the f*** do you think you are? “and “we’re accountable to no-one.” This advanced onto threats of violence, “They messaged me asking me to call them, which I did, and on that same phone call they threatened to slit my throat”, this was followed by a sinister message which read “we’re coming to get you on Monday morning.” Glasgow’s Needy recently uploaded a video to YouTube of Darren Carnegie being ejected from the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow for protesting at a Scottish Labour Party dinner event about the waste of money on lavish food and raffles whilst he claimed people were starving throughout Glasgow. We at The Glasgow News find this incredulous as Glasgow’s Needy had already organised their own similar bash at The Radisson Blu Hotel consisting of a Champagne reception, an auction with glamour prizes, a string of entertainment and a 3 course meal. This however was recently cancelled despite Darren Carnegie denying that it was ever booked. The Glasgow News confirmed with a spokesperson from The Radisson
Andrew and Darren Carnegie of Glasgow’s Needy
Blu Hotel that the event had indeed been booked, and was later cancelled. The aforementioned uploaded video shows a member of the public asking Darren if he was from Maryhill Food bank, as he and many others who were at the protest wanted to donate food to the event to assist Govan and Greater Maryhill food banks. The video shows Carnegie reply that he wasn’t a representative for Maryhill food bank however he would go over and speak to the gentleman. It has been alleged that evening that there was a van full of food for these two food banks which was never received. Ms Webster in a further phone call with the Carnegies asked about this missing van full of food, trying to establish if they knew of its whereabouts. Ms Webster alleges that she was met with the reply “Aye, I’ve got it, and I’ve already told you you’re not getting it”. Julie said that it’s these actions that have now left staff at Greater Maryhill Food Bank scared, adding, they now have to keep the doors locked at their premises. During our investigations we also discovered, that the premises Glasgow’s Needy had used in Tollcross Road, Glasgow, was unhygienic, with smashed jars of Pasta Sauce on the floors, scattered glass, out of date food, food burst open with holes
that were described as “having been chewed through by mice or rats”. We also spoke with Angela Kerrigan of Scotland Against Social Injustice, who had contacted Darren and Andrew Carnegie to address concerns that she had heard, Angela gave us the following statement: “At SASI we direct people in need of help to the relevant places, I had heard some bad things about Glasgow’s Needy but decided it was only fair to take them at face value, but my message asking about how they worked and who they helped was not received well. The reply I got via a telephone call was Andrew shouting that it was none of my business how they worked that it had nothing to do with me. I couldn’t believe it. We certainly won’t be sending anyone to them for assistance.”
“
We certainly
won’t be sending anyone to them for assistance
Given Glasgow’s Needy’s lack of transparency and reluctance to give straight answers, we now call upon them to give the people of Glasgow straight answers and not just repeatedly recite the Glasgow Needy’s mantra “End poverty now” The Glasgow News will be passing our files on Glasgow’s Needy and the Carnegies to Police Scotland.

the black market cigarette trade has found that illegal tobacco is rampant Ayr - with throughout organised crime groups standing to earn huge profits at the expense of taxpayers. Former Scotland Yard Detective Chief Inspector, Will O’Reilly, first highlighted the problem in a study last year, but says an active and persistent illicit tobacco trade continues to thrive in many Scottish towns and cities. Opponents of the government’s plans to introduce plain packaging for all tobacco products say that the change could further assist the illegal trade by making counterfeiting easier and cheaper. Evidence from Australian researchers found that a huge rise of illicit cigarette sales followed the introduction of compulsory plain packaging in 2013.

Set up in 2013, Jayz Bar and Restaurant in Shawlands, offers locals more than a range of cocktails and freshly prepared food. Its venue attracts a number of musicians from across Glasgow, all eager to play at both its acoustic and open mic nights.
Identifying a lack of locations for young talent to perform, the venue launched it’s under 18s acoustic session in the summer. Know as El Cantante the weekly event attracts a number of musicians, with some coming all the way from Uddingston to play at Jayz Bar and Restaurant. Gary Broadhurst, owner of Jayz Bar and Restaurant said; “Our under 18s acoustic sessions is one of our most popular events. Each week we are blown away by the amazing skills and talent of many of the young performers.
“A majority of our musicians have only really played to a handful of people. Our live sessions provide young artists with
a great platform to build confidence and develop and enhance their musical skills. “The under 18s event is always really busy, however we make sure everyone who comes along gets the opportunity to perform.”
One regular to the sessions, who is used to playing in front of a large crowd, is 2014 X Factor contestant Emily Middlemass. Emily said: “I love the under 18s event for El Cantante sessions at Jayz Bar. It’s a great atmosphere and even though I’ve had experience of playing to large crowds, it’s great to hook up with my talented peers at Jayz.
“It’s a great event for young people to cut their teeth and network in a great venue that is all ages friendly. The quality of the musicianship is high and it is well run. That’s why I always love playing there and will continue to do so.”
Jodie Pollock, 17 from Giffnock has been playing at the venue for a few months and now hosts the event.
Jodie said: “I love playing at Jayz, Gary and the guys are brilliant. It feels like a home from home. There is always a great
atmosphere and the other musicians are really supportive. If anyone out there hasn’t played in front of a crowd then Jayz is a great place to start.”
Sean McGarvey, 17 from Partick has been performing for the past four years. He is in the band The Static Union and will shortly be performing at the Open Mic UK semi finals.
Sean said: “I really enjoy performing at Jayz. The guys are great and the atmosphere is always amazing. We are all young musicians still learning our craft. A venue like Jayz definitely goes a long way in building your confidence and offering experience in playing in front of others.”
Christmas in 2012.
Since April Matthew has been busking in the busy streets of Glasgow and will soon be performing at Braehead’s Christmas event with the likes of 4th State, Rewind and Nicky McDonald. Matthew said: “I really enjoy playing at Jayz and want to thank Gary for this terrific opportunity. It’s a busy bar so there is always a good mix of people
listening to your music. I’ve been playing here for a couple of months now and have met some great friends.” The under 18s El Cantante sessions take place every Wednesday between 6pm and 8pm. The event is for young people aged 12 to 18 years. For information call Gary Broadhurst on 0141 649 8737.
Rebekah Kirk, 13 from Cambuslang writes and performs her own songs.
Rebekah said: “I perform at Jayz most Wednesdays and love it. It’s great having so many other young musicians in the same room. Police warn motorists ahead of drink drive limit change Ross Swanson
Senior police officers have warned that an extra thirtyfive drivers a week could lose their licence over the festive period, following the introduction of new drink drive limits next month. The caution comes ahead of the proposed changes to the levels of alcohol permitted in drivers, due to take effect on December 5. Last month, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill set out the plans to lower the alcohol limit from 80mg to 50mg in every 100ml of blood, meaning that even a single alcoholic drink could send motorists over the limit. Police say a public information
campaign will be launched later this month to make sure drivers are ready for the adjustment. Chief Superintendent Iain Murray, head of roads policing, said: “Drink driving causes significant impact on families and our local communities - not just at Christmas, but throughout the year - and the proposed changes send a clear message that there is no safe alcohol limit for drivers.
risk their own lives and the lives of others. We welcome the proposed changes to the law which will help keep people safe
“Our advice to all drivers is don’t risk it. Even at the new levels you will still be three times morelikely to die in a collision than without any alcohol at all.” This week Police Scotland announced that over 3,000 people have been caught driving while under the influence of drink or drugs since April 1 this year. Police are keen to improve drink drive drivers willing to

On Sunday 16th November, this annual beauty competition will once again be held in the elegant surroundings of Club 29, Royal Exchange Square. 10 lovely ladies have been selected over the past few months and now have the opportunity, supported by friends and family, to show us all that they have got what it takes to be Miss Elegance Glasgow. Sandwich-gate
‘spreads’ across the UK The collective internet came together this week to lampoon the Daily Mail after they sensationally declared that there was nobody left in the UK able to make a simple sandwich. The tabloid voiced their sense of outrage when news broke that a UK producer of pre-packaged sandwiches was being forced to recruit hundreds of workers from Eastern Europe to keep business rolling. Twitter was quickly filled with sarcastic responses from the distressed British public who did their best to prove the paper wrong.
Speaking to The Glasgow News, Malcolm Macaskill who is the Managing Director of a Glasgow based sandwich manufacturing company, The Sandwich Factory, said “Whilst I can’t speak for the whole of the UK, I would like to say that we have never had any trouble whatsoever in filling vacancies. We are fortunate to have expert sandwich manufacturing staff who are qualified and loyal to the business” Here’s a few of our personal favourites of what tweeters have dubbed “sandwich-gate”.

Hook Who it Isn’y Fresh off a string of sold out shows at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, Still Game star Gavin Mitchell is now looking forward to treading the boards once again at city’s famous King’s Theatre for his latest pantomime stint. No stranger to the venue, Gavin has spent his festive period there for the better part of a decade now.
“I think this is either my ninth or tenth time doing it,” he says with genuine uncertainty, “I wasn’t going to do it this year to be honest, I was going to have a wee break after all those shows at The Hydro. I fancied a wee celebration and thought I’d go on holiday for a change. But it was too good an opportunity to miss. “Y’know it’s the 50th anniversary? So it’s a special one, and Peter Pan is my favourite book. It’s
never been done before so I couldn’t turn it down.” “I’ve always wanted the chance to play Captain Hook,” says Gavin, “He’s like the biggest, baddest, evil-est, nastiest piece of work ever,” he says with a wry smile in his best villain voice, “although very misunderstood of course.” “It’s really exiting,” he continues, “It’s not just the 50th anniversary, it’s my 50th birthday too so it’s a double-whammy - like some kind of bizarre centenary for the both of us,” he says laughing. “It’s really just become the norm that I do the panto for a couple of months every year,” he admits, “It’s weird if I don’t do it.” During his near decade run on panto, the affable funnyman has
become one of the faces most associated with the Christmas period – apart from Santa Claus of course – in Glasgow’s theatreland. “I’ve somewhere invisibly crossed the line of being the old veteran – I’m now the old bugger. “I noticed it last year,” he says, “ I had a bad tooth, and in-between shows I was getting it treated and coming back with a frozen face - and then being first on stage. One of the dancers said to me ‘oh, I had the same thing a few years ago, it’s horrible. But those were baby teeth, I suppose you don’t have any left because you’re too old?’ Aye, thanks for that,” he says laughing. “It is strange though how you kind of cross this line that you don’t notice,” he admits, “I still think of myself as a baby.
“Last year John Ramage [63] was the oldest member of the cast, so that kinda took the heat off me,” he explains, “but now, there’s no hiding place. It’s quite obvious now that I’m the old man of The King’s,” he says with a proud smile. It quickly becomes clear when talking to Gavin Mitchell that The King’s Theatre is a very special and meaningful venue for him, and not simply just his place of work. He explains: “It’s just a remarkable place. It’s actually the first theatre I ever went to, in ...erm, 19...72...maybe? Or three,” he says unsurely, “I think from an early age it was instilled in me that The King’s was just such a massively important place in the history of Glasgow. It’s just such an amazing breeding
ground for variety and talent. It’s legends who have walked on that stage, and are in those walls, andwho have worn those clothes. “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I was going to go up on that stage to do that panto, let alone throughout the years, go on to do nearly ever part at some point.” The month-long residency at the theatre will of course be a little more intimate than the comic actor will likely be used to, after finishing a string of sold out and critically acclaimed performances at The Hydro last month. Considered by many Scots to be one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, the hugely anticipated Still Game reunion saw Gavin reprise his best known role – the hilariously sarcastic barman of The Clansman, Boaby. Given that the popular show originally ended back in
2007, did Gavin ever think that the residents of Craiglang were ever forgotten? “It’s actually always been kinda constant,” he says, explaining he still get recognised daily, “at least a couple of times a week people would always come and ask ‘when are you coming back?,’ and then it changed drastically, when we announced the shows, to people smiling and giving us the thumbs up again.” He admits that he originally had his doubts that there would still be enough fans of the show to fill the massive arena, which opened last year. “The response kinda blew us out the water to be honest. We were only supposed to do the four shows, which I didn’t even think
we’d be able to pull off.” Still Game Live eventually went on to achieve 21 standing ovations out of 21 shows - an incredible feat - certainly enough to dispel any doubts that the show’s fanbase had dwindled at all. “We all thought, this is bigger than all of us, he says with sincerity, “The outpouring of love was absolutely incredible.” As it turns out, the return of Jack &Victor et al. was actually the best kept secret in Glasgow for a lot longer than anybody had known. “We all knew for about a year before the announcement – not allowed to say anything,” explains Gavin, “People involved in the show couldn’t tell their families. It was a really, really hard secret to
keep,” he confesses, “especially when, still, everybody kept saying ‘oh, you should come back,’ so it wasn’t easy.” Being one of the keeper’s of a secret like that must have taken it’s toll on the entire cast and crew, so just imagine the relief when they were finally able to announce the reunion run of shows last October. “It was like announcing you were going to be Doctor Who,” says Gavin, smiling.
A filmed performance from the successful three-week run was broadcast on BBC1 Scotland last Friday, which has led to rumours of a full recommissioned series of Still Game being in the works. “We’ll see how the boy’s get on,” say Gavin, referring to co-stars and writers Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill, “I think we’re back though and I don’t see how anything can stop us.”
“We didn’t really need to be directed at all,” he explains, “In many ways it was a bit spooky how
In the meantime, for Gavin Mitchell, his five week panto run will be his main focus. After such a busy year, what’s next for the comic actor? “Personally, for once, nothing,” he says with a smile, “I might get my blood changed in January and lie down for a bit,” he adds jokingly – I think.
well we knew how to play our parts, It just kinda happened.”
“I really don’t know though, I’ve left it open for a change. That’s
“We hadn’t really been in a room together for seven years,” he says, “but everyone just naturally slipped back into character.”
part of the fun of the job I suppose. It’s a lovely privileged position to be in.” “I try and not look too far into the future because before I know it, it’s filled up anyway,” says Gavin, happily. So try and catch Peter Pan this Christmas at The King’s Theatre, because it might be your last chance to see Gavin Mitchell for a while. “I’m very bad at doing it, but hopefully I’ll enjoy a wee rest,” he concludes, “I might do some DIY, read some books and sit on my backside for a while.” Sounds like a well deserved holiday to me. Peter Pan runs at The King’s Theatre from December 6 – January 11.

WHAT NOT TO MISS...
WHAT NOT TO MISS...
Scot Squad Ep 4 – BBC ONE Scotland – Monday 17 – 10:35pm It isn’t all sweet tablet, tattie scones and teacakes in Scotland, especially not for the new unified police force. This week, Volunteer Officer Ken Beattie finds himself in the middle of a domestic ding dong between warring neighbours; PC’s McKirdy and Singh uncover ice-cream van dodgy dealings; and Chief Commissioner Miekelson gives his unique insight into how to tackle excessive drinking.
A karaoke commotion puts Volunteer Officer Ken Beattie in between two hot-headed neighbours. However, his peace suggestion sees him step up to the mic thanks to pushy partygoer Jamie-Leigh. Traffic Cops PCs McKirdy and Singh’s interest is spiked by a dodgy looking ice-cream van. When they discover it’s trading in booze and not sweets they arrest the perpetrator but not before PC McKirdy pulls himself an ice-cream cone.
Excessive drinking is an issue for the police force and Chief Commissioner Miekelson offers his own insight. “Alcohol’s fine - we’re against bam juice,” he says. “Keep the expensive stuff as it is, make the bam juice cost a £100 a bottle. Problem solved.” PCs McIntosh and MacKay aren’t amused when they have to investigate a smash and grab at an arcade. A trail of money takes them to the harbourside, leading to an adventure across the water. Elsewhere, Bobby isn’t happy when he’s met by a new, unfamiliar face at the police station; an anti-capitalist protest takes an unexpected turn for PC Fletcher and PC McLaren; and call centre worker Maggie Le Beau explains why it’s important to keep her cool.
Fans of other Comedy Unit shows (Chewin’ the Fat, Rab C. Nesbit, etc.) will feel at home with the show’s typically Glaswegian humour.

Gotham
Tattoo’s After Dark
– Series 1, Ep 6: Spirit of the Goat – Ch 5 – Monday 17 - 9pm
Ep 15: Late Night Horrors – E4 – Tuesday 18 – 10:35
This week on Bruno Heller’s slow burning Batman prequel Gotham, the city is plagued by a resurrected serial killer whose target is the offspring of the city’s wealthiest citizens.
The end is near for the first series of Tattoo’s After Dark, a guilty pleasure of ours that we’ll be sad to see go.
‘Ghosts of Gordon’s past are stirred, but Gordon has his own secrets to worry about.’ says the official synopsis – sounds intriguing. Hopefully the writers have taken this opportunity to flesh out the character, as the OC’s Benjamin McKenzie is about as interesting as worn carpet – Gary Oldman, he is not.
The US reality show follows the after-hours events at two Los Angeles tattoo parlours and the antics of their staff and customers. Unlike the ‘professional’ examples of body modifications seen in shows like LA Ink, ‘After Dark shows us a fairly constant stream of walking regrets as drunk people stumble in to get tattoo’ed. Like a car crash – but with permanent ink – it’s hard to look away.
The net also closes around Gordon for Cobblepotʼs murder and he’s now apparently the prime suspect.
With only one more instalment before the the season finale, next week’s episode looks set to be an absolute belter:
Will anyone believe him when he says he didn’t shoot him though? And, what will Falcone have to say about it all?
‘Laine gets a giant scar covered up with a bloody tattoo, a couple that was married by Satan gets pierced by Chris Saint, and Charles gets a ridiculous Japanese warrior tattoo,’ says Channel 4.
Elsewhere, fresh from faking his own death, Oswald – soon to be The Penguin – Cobblepot continues to launch his new reign of terror on the resident’s of Gotham. Relative newcomer Robin Lord Taylor’s portrayal of the twisted Penguin is easily the best thing about the show – and reason alone to watch Gotham.
A couple who were married by Satan? Surely that’s worth tuning in to see? Expect the usual lunatics and eccentrics. It’s brilliant, really.
Anyone else just wish they’d jump a few years and let young Bruce Wayne stumble into the batcave?

Daniel Radcliffe finds horns sprouting from his head in this devilishly enjoyable horror fable! Smalltown couple Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) and Merrin Williams (Juno Temple) are childhood sweethearts. When Merrin is murdered, Ig becomes the prime suspect. The police don’t have enough evidence to charge him, but only Ig’s family and his public defender friend Lee (Max Minghella) believe in his innocence. Then our horrified hero awakes to find horns sprouting from his temples. Naturally, the locals see this as a sign of his guilt and reason that the Devil has claimed him. But there’s an intriguing side effect. Ig now finds his embarrassing appendages cause those around him to share their deepest secrets and darkest urges! This strikingly original, blackly comic supernatural fantasy is adapted from the novel by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill. It’s directed by Alexandre Aja, who gave us ‘Piranha 3D’ and ‘The Hills Have Eyes’.
Jake Gyllenhaal stars in a nerve-shredding thriller set in the sleazy, cut-throat world of LA crime journalism. Unemployed and broke, Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is thwarted at every turn as he searches for work. Then he happens upon a car crash, where an intrusive, hard-nosed cameraman is delighted to be first on the scene. This is Lou’s introduction to the seedy lifestyle of ‘nightcrawlers’ - roving freelance camera crews whose motto is, “If it bleeds, it leads.” He’s soon out on the streets, desperate to beat his rivals to crime scenes, pile-ups and major fires. His recklessness and dedication impress tough-minded TV executive Nina (Rene Russo). But the temptation to go one step further in pursuit of a scoop lands him in deep water. Jake Gyllenhaal lost 20 pounds in weight to become the gaunt nightcrawler for this gripping voyage into LA’s seamy underbelly. It’s the directorial debut of ‘Bourne Legacy’ co-writer Dan Gilroy.
Explorers journey though a wormhole in space to save humanity in this mind-bending sci-fi from the director of ‘Inception’. Single father Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is a highly trained pilot. But his skills are redundant in a future world that seems to be turning into a hostile dust bowl. Then a scientist (Michael Caine) persuades him that it is time for mankind to look to the stars for salvation. His idea is to make use of a recently discovered wormhole in space to find habitable planets. But to take part in this risky, pioneering mission, Cooper will have to leave his two young children behind. Visionary ‘Inception’ and ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy director Christopher Nolan has been typically tight-lipped about this extraordinary project. But he promises to add jaw-droppingly innovative visual techniques to his rich storytelling palette. The film also reunites him with Catwoman actress Anne Hathaway. Watch out too for the cameo by Matt Damon.
TAKE 2 – GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (tbc) A human adventurer teams up with a band of alien misfits to save the galaxy in this thrilling new Marvel superhero epic. Roguish Earthman Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), AKA StarLord, has got himself into a whole heap of trouble. He’s stolen an orb, which is also coveted by villainous psycho Ronan (Lee Pace). Ronan will stop at nothing to retrieve the mysterious artefact. This forces our charismatic anti-hero to forge an alliance with an unlikely quartet of rival cosmic outlaws. His crew comprises vengeancecrazed warrior Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), gun-toting Rocket the raccoon (Bradley Cooper), green-skinned deadly assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and tree-like humanoid Groot (Vin Diesel). But when Quill learns of the orb’s real power, a last-ditch battle for the galaxy ensues! This awesome new addition to the Marvel cinematic universe also features a shaven-headed Karen Gillan as Ronan’s sidekick Nebula and introduces Josh Brolin as the voice of sinister supervillain Thanos.

PROFESSOR GREEN GROWING UP IN PUBLIC
Dias de la Muertos On the day of the dead Stereo was celebrating with a bit of Scottish infused with a Mexican and a whole lot of fun, so as you can imagine we just had to check it out. Our good friends Colonel Mustard and the Dijon Five were playing that night in their classic in-your-face way. We started off the night upstairs as we had arrived early and didn’t want to pose too eager, eventually we seen the crowds coming in and decided it would be the best time to head downstairs. Upon arrival we were greeted by the organizers of the event who were dressed up in the typical Dias de la Muertos style, checked our names off the list and headed for our faces to get painted. In the background your could hear faint songs that would remind you of holidaying in Spain as you look around and see the many skull faces walking around. Even though this isn’t the norm, it was as it was supposed to be on this day of
@Glasgow_News
celebration, relaxed and everyone getting into the party spirit.
As we stood by the bar the band came on, fully dressed up as you would expect, and started with “International Sex Her” a song that gets everyone moving into the dance floor. Then we heard “Bouncy Ball” a song dedicated to Laurie Deacon who organized the event. Of course there is no complete party without a dance off and Colonel never fails with their song “Dance Off” funnily enough, although not everyone was a fan of the winner. “How Many Many’s Are Too Many Many’s” was next up keeping the pace and everyone sweating. After that was “Capturado” a fitting song for the night which had those Mexican vibes flowing through it. Then the big finisher, everyone’s favourite “It Might Not Be The End Of The World But It Always Ends In Tears With A Ginger Girl”.
Recently we caught up with Professor Green to have a chat and talk about his new album and what to expect in his up and coming tour, he kicks it off right here in Glasgow at the O2 ABC on Friday 28. You may even be able to see him around town on Thursday as it’s his birthday and things are expected to get “a little naughty”.
We were treated to a Mariachi Band at the very end of the night which kept those feet (and hips) moving until the end of the night, all in all it was a very good night.

Professor Green’s third album is called Growing Up In Public, it marks the next chapter in an all-conquering career which has seen him amass over 2 million record sales in the UK alone. Bearing Green’s trademark autobiographical approach and critically acclaimed lyrical style. Touching candidly on everything from loss, grief and the black dog through to love, marriage, fame and raving, it sees him switch seamlessly from cheeky self deprecating humour, witty braggadocio and satirical jabs, to more reflective, confessional moments with the finely tuned skill of a natural wordsmith throughout.
Featured artists on the album include Rizzle Kicks on the droll funked hopper Name In Lights; James Craise on the punchy, gospel-flavoured Dead Man’s Shoes; Tori Kelly on the popsmart smash-in-waiting Lullaby, and Mr Probz on the acoustic-guitar driven soulful anthem in the making Little Secrets. Meanwhile there’s a walk-on part for Cara Delevingne, a half mast salute to Dappy in the Thabo featured ballad Not Your Man, and a skit courtesy of an irate Robbie Williams which concludes the riff-heavy album opener, I Need Church.
he’d written for Jamie ‘n’ Commons,” Green says by way of explaining the genesis of his relationship with Harpoon. “I met him on a really hungover morning, and we shot the breeze for a couple of hours. And in three days we got four song ideas down. It was a really relaxed vibe with him. I hate formulas and any feeling of forcing something. Songwriting shouldn’t be forced.”
On the group of collaborators you can hear an Acoustic guitar, propulsive beats, a soul-rasp vocal from Mr Probz (who recently topped the charts with his single Waves) – it’s the fruits of Green’s new writing partnership with north London-based Kid Harpoon (Florence + The Machine) - who joins a cast list of collaborators including DJ Khalil (Eminem, Jay Z, 50 Cent), Chris Loco (Rita Ora, Tinie Tempah) and TMS (Emile Sandé, Ed Sheeran).
“It’s not as heavy as it sounds, it’s just an idea born of waking up with the mother of all hang-overs”. But it ties in with that idea of the album title, of the transition of a boy to a man, and working out what being a man is. I’m not a very content person, ever, but I am learning to accept things. Although that doesn’t mean I’m becoming boring!” Green adds. “I won’t ever.”
The album’s opener, I Need Church. It sees Green rapping about “a devil on my shoulders”.
“I heard The Devil In Me, a track that

Paloma – The Perfect Contradiction Ahead of her highly anticipated concert at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow on the 16th of November, we get the truth and something beautiful from Paloma Faith, as she gives us an insight in to what to expect on the night, plans for the future and how touring is like one big pyjama party. Quite a few of the dates are already sold out and you are coming off the back of a US tour – are you looking forward to this? I am looking forward to it but I am also concerned I am going to lose my voice (laughs). But I have a three-week gap, which is more than enough; I just need two days for recovery. Each tour seems to get bigger – are you going to do anything different on this one? It’s a bigger band, there are three additional players, there’s a brass section, 12 people on stage including me. We’ve read recently you said the visual element is important to your work - will there be more of that in the show? It’s not bigger; it’s the same high standard. When you tour over 20 dates like this, any home comforts that you take with you? We’re on a tour bus most of the time so we all have a lot of different exciting types of pyjamas, there’s a lot of onesies flying around. You know in the Big Lebowski how the dude is always in his flip-flops and dressing gown holding a white Russian? That is basically me on tour. In my flip-flops and dressing gown until 2 hours before stage then I
go and turn into this glamorous thing. The rest of the day I have a pyjama party. It’s funny, people always say being on tour must be so gruelling but I think it is the most ungruelling element of my job. Shall I tell you why? Because I hate doing interviews. It’s basically luxury to me to get up every morning and have literally nothing to do for an entire day, and then do two hours work at the end of the day. Two hours to get ready then two hours on stage, that’s four hours work a day. That’s nothing compared to normal days. Yesterday I woke up, started work at 8 and finished at 1.30 am, that’s a normal day for me. I was doing personal training then interviews for the entire day then went to the studio to record more music, and I got home at 1.30 am. I just think it’s ridiculous. On tour is like going on holiday. All those musicians who are telling you it’s hard are bloody lazy bastards. It’s easy. And also you get to perform so you get full of natural drugs every night, adrenaline and stuff. Do you get a chance to explore the cities? I tend not to because when I’m outside London it’s quite difficult for me to go incognito and I find that quite exhausting. I try to really just reserve my energy when I am on tour. If I go out and do pictures with everyone in the street all day I’ll be tired by the time I come to perform. I tend to just hide away. Even if I go out in my flip-flops and my onesie they do recognise me, believe me I’ve tried it. Is it the same for holidays, do you have to go aboard? Yeah I tend to go to places where I’m not well known. It’s getting worse, the bigger each release gets.
EMILY MIDDLEMAS
Are you happy with the success of this album? I am happy but obviously it could have done worse and it could have done better!
Emily Middlemas’ voice took Britain by storm when she recently performed on X-Factor. Such was her talent that Cheryl Versini Fernandez chose to take her to “judges’ houses”. Unfortunately for Emily, despite the rave review performances, it was returning entrant Chloe Jasmine who progressed.
On the new version of the album is your performance at the BBC proms, was that a big moment? That was the best moment of my career to date. It was just all of it. I have done quite a lot with that orchestra before, become friends with a lot of them, it was nice to walk on to the albert hall stage for the first time and feel like I was with a family rather than being really nervous. I have done a lot of stuff there before where I’ve done one song but it was my first proper own show. The venue suits me; it wasn’t my choice that it hasn’t happened before.
Since then Emily has played a string of Venues around the U.K, performed
at Schools and had Radio appearances amongst other live appearances, when we caught up with Emily she told us she is planning an E.P and Album launch at the turn of the year, using Rocketfuelhq. com . Despite the success and following Emily has gained thus far, she still remains grounded. We asked her about her sudden rise to stardom and she replied “It’s just crazy, if you had told me a year ago, even 6 months ago, that I would have played at Wembley in front
of Simon Cowell, I’d never have believed it, never! but it just goes to show that if you want something enough, then anything can happen”, with a wry giggle. ‘Anything can happen’ was the song that Emily made her mark on the X-factor with, and without sounding too much like Louis Walsh, she definitely owned it!
We saw Emily perform at a Radio Clyde event in Paisley on November the 1st, and she had lost none of the vocals or charisma she displayed on the show. Wowing the crowds with her self-penned song “Goodbye Kiss”, which we predict to be a sure fire number 1 in 2016, and soon got the crowd singing and dancing along to an excellent rendition of ‘Anything could
happen’. Emily took time out after her set to go in and meet her fans, posing for pictures with them signing autographs. She was accompanied that day, as usual, by her Mum and Dad, who Emily told us “are my biggest supporters, they stand by everything I do and are always there for me” She even cited her dad as one of her earliest musical influences, saying he taught her a few chords on the guitar when she was younger, adding “and it’s pretty funny, because now I teach him!”. Throughout our chat with Emily, it was evident how appreciative she is of her fans, and this is also evident on social media where she takes the time to converse with them, even sending hand
written letters and giving musical advice. In an industry where people get famous for the wrong reasons, it’s refreshing to see someone as talented and genuine as Emily make her mark, and still find time for her fans. Emily will be turning on the Christmas lights in Ayr at Ayr Central Shopping Centre on the 15th of November, and The Avenue Shopping Centre in Glasgow on the 16th November, and plenty more appearances planned. Follow her on Twitter @ emilymiddlemas_ to keep up to date with her plans, and if you would like to help Emily in the launch Single and Album next year, stop by rocketfuelhq. com/emilymiddlemas for more details.
5 Minutes with Brett Dennen
Your success continues to build here and USA, Australia coming next year, any others?
Eccentric folkster Brett Dennen is this week once again descending upon the UK - this time in support of jazz/pop star Paloma Faith’s nationwide tour. We spoke to him on the first night of the tour, which kicked off in Nottingham, ahead of this Sunday’s gig at the Clyde Auditorium:
US tour, Oz tour and European tour as well next year. I was No1 in Australia and that’s my first No1 in my career that was for a few weeks so it’s pretty amazing. It’s building nicely and doing well in Holland, which is reassuring as it was Holland that broke Pharrell with happy on his comeback. So yeah I am pleased. I am doing a lot more damage than I have in the past.
We’d ask how the tour is going, but since it’s the first night, we can’t really... Yeah, we’re just getting going. We’ve had about two weeks of other shows, but this is where it really starts. How did your involvement in the tour come about? Paloma just asked me to do it. She’s been listening to my music for a while, and just reached out to me and asked if I’d be the support or the tour. It was nice, there was no record label telling her which artist to choose. She’s unique man, she doesn’t let anybody tell her what to do.
2015 is mapped out then - have you had time to think about a new album? On this repack I have been working with people I haven’t worked with before and I am really enjoying it. I’m concentrating on that. The next album won’t be ready for a while as I have to get all these tours out of the way and I have also been writing for the repack.
27
You were in Glasgow earlier this year with the John Butler Trio, what did you make of our city? Aw man I loved it! It’ll be nice to get back.
Have you recorded with dame Shirley Bassey?
Any last words about your tour and Arena tour?
Yes I recorded a duet with her for her 60 years in music album. It’s not a secret bond track, I wish it were
I am hoping it will be more than 6 people at the arena tour because it will be a bit humiliating, so please come.
Is there anything you’re looking to do while you’re in Glasgow this time? I don’t have any expectations at all. Every morning I get up and got for a run and just see what’s up and what every city has to offer – it’s a good way to get inspiration.
The last time you were here you played the O2 Academy, how will playing a bigger venue effect your gig? I expect the crowd to be a lot different. When I played [in Glasgow] last, it was more of a rowdy crowd. Paloma’s crowd is a lot different. They’re much quieter. I believe the venue is all seated too,so I think people will just want to sit there and listen and take it all in. The John Butler crowd had a lot more people talking and having some drinks – just a lot different. Your set is obviously as a support act, how do you approach playing in front of someone else’s crowd? Do you relish the challenge? Yeah, I guess I do. It’s a great opportunity to win over everybody. If I don’t get their attention right off the bat, then I have to work for it. Sometimes I have to try different things out. It’s a lot of fun because I have this whole body of work to choose from. After the show is over on Sunday, are you planning on heading out to check out the city’s nightlife? Of course! I’ve gotta have some scotch, I would be a fool if I didn’t. I’ve got some Scottish heritage actually. I’d love to learn more about it actually. I have a very limited view of the world y’know? I’m an American, so I just love to meet people and expand how you see things. What message do you have for the people of Scotland ahead of
your performance this weekend? A Message? The world’s about to end! We just landed a research station on a comet, so in the next couple of weeks we’re going to find out things about outer space and inner space that we previously didn’t know. Hopefully we’ll find a parallel universe full of scotch that we can all retreat to. Erm...yeah, sounds good Brett.

GAMES WORLD Sunset Overdrive REVIEW
In an era where at least 90% of all newly released games are multi-platform, and there is so little to distinguish between the consoles except brand loyalty, the ‘major exclusive’ is often seen as the hopeful to bring in new players. With Setset Overdrive, Microsoft are expecting to give gamers a reason to pick their camp over their rivals at Sony.
So is it any good? Yes Is it proper, bona fide gamechanger? Not quite, no The game plays like the awkward love child of Jet Set Radio, Infamous and Dead Rising, with equal measures of each to make a truly unique, albeit unbalanced, gaming experience. The game’s story is as ludicrous as it is hilarious. The end of the world – the ‘awesomepocalypse’ - is brought on by a sinister
experimental energy drink which has transformed the residents of Sunset City into hideous, bloodthirsty, mutanttype zombies . It’s manufacturer, and story ‘baddie’ Fizzco, has managed to lock down the city in a bid to cover up the mess, shutting the city away from the rest of civilisation within a closed wall in the process. A piece of social commentary about global corporations and their evil intentions? Perhaps – An absolutely bonkers premise for a story? Definitely. Developers Insomniac Games have their tongue planted firmly in cheek here. You play as one of the few survivors in the city, fighting to stay alive. As the story unfolds you soon become involved in a plot to expose the evil Fizzco’s secrets, and bring justice to the world. The main way you travel through the vast Sunset City is jumping, bouncing and grinding on
XBOX ONE RRP: £49.99
each and everything in your surroundings. You can reach the top of a building by using a car bonnet as a trampoline and then sliding your way up a lamppost to reach your target. Almost everything in the game’s world can be used to propel you along to your next objective. And move you must, as you’ll quickly be overcome by The O.D (the games version of the typical zombie) in swelling numbers if you don’t keep going. The controls feel a little cumbersome and clunky at first, but soon become more fluid as you play. Assassins Creed this is not, there is no simple ‘hold down the right shoulder and run’ mechanic here and every button press counts. There is nothing more frustrating than losing momentum while you’re trying to traverse between buildings, but likewise nothing so rewarding as absolutely nailing the game’s ‘free-running on acid’ intention. Setset Overdrive will take a bit of getting used to,
but the rewards are certainly there. Not since GTA first went 3D back in 2001 has exploring an open-world map been so fun. It’s the game’s combat where it seems a little flat. Guns have no recoil or power and feel a little toy-like, while melee weapons seem infective and pointless. The game forcing you to constantly keep moving to stay on top of The O.D works perfectly as a mechanic when you’re travelling about, but becomes more than a little frustrating when you’re trying to take out hordes of enemies and can’t focus or aim properly. It’s a real shame then that the combat is such a necessary part of the game. Sunset Overdrive is terrific fun and well worth picking up, if only for the wonderful exploration you’ll find yourself accomplishing. Just don’t expect the world with this one.
TECH WORLD
Pirate walks the plank Pirate Bay co-founder Gottfrid Warg has lost yet another court battle and been sentenced to threeand-a-half years in prison for hacking into computers and illegally downloading files.
having served 17 months in pretrial detention.
The Swede and a co-defendant were convicted of breaking into computers owned by Danish technology company CSC in what prosecutors called the “largest hacking case to date”.
Defence lawyers claimed that, although the hack attacks were carried out using a computer owned by Warg, another unnamed hacker...hacked his machine and used it to carry out the attacks.
Warg’s accomplice was given a six-month jail sentence but walked free from the court,
The court heard that the hack, which occurred back in February 2012, had given the pair access to the sensitive information, including social security numbers and private police records.
Confusing isn’t it? It’s a bit like Inception.
After considering evidence however, the judge and jury in the case said it was “unlikely” that other people were responsible. The court’s decision is the third to go against Warg in the last five years. On 20 June 2013, Gottfrid was found guilty of hacking and sentenced to two years in prison, which was later reduced to one year on appeal. In November 2013 he was deported to Denmark where he will now serve his prison sentence.
Nintendo (might) Ruin Christmas Nintendo have announced that the brand new 3DS won’t be launching in the UK until 2015 – because the current model is still selling too well. The new, more powerful, 3DS successfully launched last month in Japan. Sales of the original models had slowed significantly in recent months, prompting the upgrade. Despite missing an obvious window for shipping the beefed-up handheld to the public in time for Christmas, Nintendo President Satoru
Iwata said, during a recent financial briefing, that the US and Europe don’t need the new model just yet, as they are still shifting plenty of units.
The main differences between the current console and the New 3DS include much better battery life, interchangeable front plates and a second analogue stick. Nintendo say that the handheld will also feature a faster processor and that 3D performance has also been improved, letting you see the effect from a wider angle. Worth upgrading? We’ll see.

Scottish Property Market on the Mend According to a new report, property prices in Scotland are selling for £8,000 more than asking price. The website S1 Himes say that there is no longer a reality gap, the difference between asking price and selling price, in most areas of Scotland.
Ewan Stark commenting “ We have reached a turning point in the Scottish property market. Buyers are now prepared to pay more than they have been for quite some time and sellers at the lower end of the market are seeing their asking prices being surpassed more notably.”
They have also say that we have reached a turning point in the property market with managing director
S1’s latest quarterly house price report found flats were typically selling for £27,000 more than their ask-
ing price. Terraced houses on average went for £20,000 more and semi-detached houses for £9000 more. For a second quarter in a row, only detached houses were selling for less than their asking price. However, the report suggested the gap had narrowed, with detached houses selling for £31,000 less than their asking price compared with £37,000 in

the previous quarter. Stark adds “It’s still a buyer’s market when looking for a detached property but the gap is narrowing so we could see a very different picture in 2015.” Regional analysis indicated that a gap still exists in some parts of Scotland, although it has narrowed everywhere apart from in Argyll and Bute and South Lanarkshire.
Glasgow News
In the previous quarter properties in East Lothian, Glasgow, Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire were generally selling for less than their asking price. However the latest quarter suggested properties in Glasgow, Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire were selling on average £2,500 more than their asking price, while properties in East Lothian were typically going for £500 more.

What is this sting I hear you asking? Well apart from its obvious insane looks, it has 845 Big British Horse Powers (bhp) stampeding underneath what is left of that bonnet and four-wheel-drive. This sting has been produced for Block’s upcoming Gymkhana 7 video. Talking about it, Ken say’s “I’m stoked to be able to publicly unveil this car for the first time at SEMA,” he goes on. “This is a project I’ve been working on for two years, so to see it fully come to fruition and be able to drive it for Gymkhana 7 was absolutely amazing.” ASD Motorsports in North Carolina are
the people who it has taken two years to complete this build, starting from the base of a classic ‘65 ‘Notchback’ Mustang. Then it was modified by ASD and RTR (the same RTR team who created a <<>> Mustang) who crammed in the 410 cubic inch Roush Yates V8 – 6.7 litres to us – which produces that enourmous 845bhp and a massive 720lb ft of torque. This is then coupled to a six-speed transmission and Sadev all-wheel-drive sytem.
choice for this project,” explains Ken. “The attention to detail with the fabrication and bodywork blows my mind. “This is hands-down the best Gymkhana car I’ve had yet,” he adds, which means the upcoming Gymkhana 7 should be a corker. No idea what he will come up with next, but for now we can all enjoy this stunning creation.
To add to lunacy they have thrown in ASD Motorsports-designed suspension, a full tubular chassis, roll cage (of course), door bars three-piece 18inch wheels wrapped in a custom Pirelli Trofeo R Tyres in a “custom Ken Block compound”, since he like to tear them to shreds. The styling is said to be from a mix of the current WRC field, DTM and toy cars from Block’s youth. “I knew that working with Vaughn Gittin Jr and his RTR team was the right

Ashley lends Rangers a further £1M Continued from page 40. We are aware that Mr Ashley, a shareholder in RIFC, has been awarded the naming rights to Rangers’ stadium for £1. This appears to be uncompetitive and may enable Mr Ashley’s company to profit at the expense of RIFC. We are also aware that Mr Ashley controls the retail operations of RIFC via Sports Direct, reducing potential revenue streams to the severe detriment of the company, and to the possible benefit of Sports Direct. We are unaware of any competitive tenders being sought by the directors of RIFC. More recently, Mr Ashley has provided a short term loan to RIFC in return for which he has been allowed to place two of his representatives on the board of the company. We are aware that an alternative offer of a larger loan on similar terms was made to the company, but the board chose to accept the smaller loan from Mr Ashley Mr Ashley owns a controlling interest in another football club, Newcastle United FC, and ownership of more than one football club is not permitted by football authorities. Under the terms agreed with the Scottish Football Association, Mr Ashley was initially permitted to be involved with Rangers if his shareholding did not exceed 10%, and that he did not
exert any influence at board level. We believe in placing two of his representatives on the board of RIFC, Mr Ashley is clearly influencing operations which may violate his agreement with the SFA. This could put the football club at risk of sanctions. Indeed, we understand that the SFA has written to Rangers and Mr Ashley for clarification. Potential sanctions from the governing body could range from financial penalties to suspension of membership. We believe this is an unacceptable risk to the business, particularly when an alternative offer of short term funding was available. This risk appears to have been taken in order to further the interests of one related party. Furthermore, it has been reported that Mr Ashley is set to obtain the image rights to Rangers’ emblems. We are unaware of these being for sale and certainly have no knowledge of any competitive bids being sought. Again, if this is the case, it would seem to be another example of one related party benefitting at the expense of the company and the thousands of other shareholders. Finally, there does not appear to have been any disclosure of commercial income by the board, and previous statements by the board to the effect that the company has sufficient funds have been false. (Short term funding in the form of loans had to be
secured earlier in the year following a statement by the then CEO that the company had sufficient funds to last until the end of the football season) The Rangers Supporters’ Trust represents over 2000 members with a group shareholding in RIFC, and we believe our interests, as well as those of thousands of other shareholders, may be being overlooked in favour of one particular shareholder/related party. That letter may explain why Ashley has handed back the naming rights. The Club has stood by Ashley amid the voice of concerns though, and responded with the following statement: “The board discussed offers of finance in detail with two different potential funders over a period of time and also had discussions with an additional potential funder who expressed interest at the end of the period of the board’s discussions with the two original potential funders. “Following such discussions, the independent directors comprising David Somers, Norman Crighton and James Easdale narrowed down the immediately available funding options to two proposals, being those which were able to provide proof of immediately available and uncommitted funds and proof of the identity of the funders. “As such the independent directors identified the two proposals that
39
were, in their opinion, capable of immediate delivery. “Having assessed these two proposals, the independent directors also consulted with major shareholders holding a majority of the voting rights in the company. “Following such shareholder consultations and with the support of such shareholders, the board resolved to enter into the facility.” “The independent directors, con-
sider, having consulted with Daniel Stewart its nominated adviser, that the terms of the facility are fair and reasonable insofar as shareholders of the company are concerned.” It now seems that the divide between club and fans is getting wider, and the battle for control of the club is looking increasingly more likely to be won by Ashley.
Glasgow City defender Emma Black is confident her side can get the result needed to overturn the first leg 2-1 defeat at the hands of FC Zurich in the Champions League, when they face the Swiss again at Excelsior Stadium Airdrie, tomorrow at 7.30pm.
A Fiona Brown strike at the start of the second half, gave City a precious away goal, but the Scottish Champions lost 2-1 on the night and were also reduced to ten players after full back Nicky Docherty was shown two yellow cards and dismissed with 15 minutes remaining. Docherty is joined in suspension by Julie Nelson after her yellow card in Zurich became her second of the
Champions League campaign. Striker Brown was also stretchered off in the match and is looking very unlikely to be able to play any part in the return fixture. However, despite the loss of 3 starting players, City give a welcome return to striker Susan Fairlie, who had been out with a virus and she will be a
massive boost to Wolecki Black’s fragile squad. Captaining City in Zurich, Emma Black knows her side did not play to their capabilities and are determined to reverse the result at the Excelsior Stadium. She said, “I feel we let ourselves down, which sadly is not the first time for the opening leg in Champions League knock out rounds. We know we can do much better than we shown
in the away game on Sunday and we are confident we can get the result we need. Getting the away goal is a huge boost, along with having Susan Fairlie back in the squad after having to travel without her for the first leg. Games don’t come much bigger than the chance to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League and we will be going all out to win and get the result we need.” Glasgow City take on FC Zurich on Wednesday 12th November at Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie. Kick off is 7.30pm and spectators can pay at the turnstile. Entry is £5 adults, £2 Under 16’s. If City get the result they need, they will be the first Scottish team ever to reach the Quarter Finals of the Champions League.
Glasgow 2014 Wins Gold Medal for Coming in £25m Below Budget With the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee entering its final stage of dissolution, chairman Lord Smith of Kelvin has confirmed that in delivering the Games within budget around £25m of previously committed public funds have not been required. A final budget position will not be confirmed formally until the Organising Committee’s closing accounts are completed early next year, but Lord Smith reported current indications were that the Glasgow 2014 would conclude its operations significantly within budget. He said: “From the outset, the focus of the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee and our Games Partners has been delivering a world-class Games for the Commonwealth which would make the people of Glasgow and Scotland feel proud.
“Throughout the journey – and working closely with our Games Partners – the team at Glasgow 2014 has focused on achieving excellence and also value in everything we’ve done. “It has also been very important to us that we have gone about our work in a responsible and sustainable way – ensuring that the Commonwealth Games experience has been accessible to as many people as possible, with the benefits of the Games felt widely. “My thanks go to the thousands of individuals, communities, organisations and businesses across Glasgow, Scotland and the Commonwealth for their incredible support – as well as the ‘Home Team’ at the Organising Committee for their drive to make Glasgow 2014 a truly world-class but community-relevant celebration. “It gives me considerable pride to now be able to say that Glasgow and Scotland have made Games history…. and
have done so well within budget.” Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland, said: “Glasgow delivered the best Commonwealth Games ever, showcasing the city and Scotland to the world in a fantastic way. A tremendous amount of work went into delivering the Games and I am delighted to be able to announce that operations have concluded under budget. “This is undoubtedly testament to the hard work of everyone involved, and from the competitors, to the volunteers and the spectators, I’d like to offer my utmost thanks to all those who contributed to making these the greatest Games ever. “As well as having great aspirations for Scotland’s sporting stars, we had great ambitions for the event to be a catalyst for physical, economic and social regeneration. We have already announced that £6m will go into Scotland’s first ever para-sports centre and
£2m will support our successful Legacy programme. “The remaining funds will be invested back into Scotland’s health service. It is clear that the benefit of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be felt in Scotland for generations to come.” Michael Cavanagh, chairman, Commonwealth Games Scotland, said: “Glasgow 2014 was an outstanding Commonwealth Games and provided the perfect platform for Team Scotland to have its most successful Games ever. “It is extremely good news and testimony to the hard work and professionalism of the Organising Committee and all the partners that we were able to deliver the best Games ever, well within the agreed budget. “Our focus now turns to the next two Youth Games in 2015 and 2017 and the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.
“The success of our team at Glasgow 2014 has clearly highlighted the requirement for ongoing investment in Team Scotland, to ensure there is continuing medal success and wider legacy benefits from the Games.” Prince Imran, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, said: “Glasgow 2014 and Games Partners are to be warmly congratulated on their prudent and responsible approach to the delivery of what was an outstanding and joyful Commonwealth Games. “Glasgow and Scotland’s Games has set bold new benchmarks, energised and inspired the Commonwealth sports movement and invested in developing a long-term legacy which will benefit a wide range of people and communities for many years to come.”

Ashley lends Rangers a further £1MILLION
Rangers shareholder, and possible next owner, Mike Ashley, has once again dipped in to his pockets to financially assist Rangers Football Club. The Newcastle United owner has lent Rangers a further £1 Million, following on from the emergency loan of £2m loan he supplied them with in October. The club announced to the stock exchange on Wednesday 12th of November that the initial loan had been extended to £3m while simultaneously revealing they have entered into a marketing agreement with Ashley’s Sports Direct firm.
However, that agreement sees Sports Direct give up its right to re-name Ibrox Stadium, which Ashley secured for just £1 following a previous agreement with former chief executive Charles Green. A statement to the Stock Exchange says that MASH, Mike Ashley’s holding company, “shall make available the additional sum of £1 million for drawdown by the Company on 26 November 2014”. That date is also the same day that wages are due to be paid at the Ibrox Club. Rangers said that they needed the extra funds due to poor attendance from the fans.
“During the Autumn, the club has suffered from lower than expected match attendance which has exacerbated the financial condition of the business The directors have begun a cost cutting exercise, but further working capital in addition to the facility will be needed before the end of the year,” a club statement revealed In relation to the new marketing agreement, the statement read: ““The Board of Rangers is pleased to announce that Rangers Football Club Limited has entered into a partnership marketing agreement with SportsDirect.com Retail Limited
(“Sports Direct”) in which Sports Direct has given up its naming rights to the Ibrox Stadium,” the club said in a separate statement regarding the deal.” David Somers (Executive Chairman) said: “This agreement has been concluded to demonstrate the importance both parties place on our relationship. The Rangers Board welcomes this visible demonstration of the Sports Direct support and long term commitment to Rangers.” Ashley’s increasing grip on Rangers continues to cause concern among the Rangers fans, with The Rangers Supporters Trust sending the
following letter to The London Stock Exchange, only a few days before the new marketing agreement was reached: We write as a shareholder to express our deep concern over the stewardship of Rangers International Football Club plc, and ask that you carry out an investigation into the current and previous board of directors to determine if their actions favour one particular related party, namely Mr Mike Ashley and his company, Sports Direct.
