NEW BENEFITS WILL IMPROVE YOUR LIVES, SAY TORIES DAVID STEWART THE CONSERVATIVES have urged East End Glaswegians to give the new Universal Credit benefit system a chance, saying it will improve the living conditions of thousands and encourage people back into work.

The initiative is the flag-ship policy in David Cameron’s welfare reforms and is due to be introduced to Glasgow in June. The new credit system will roll six benefits into one single monthly payment. The Tories say it will ‘make work pay’ and discourage welfare dependence. Any protests against universal credit in Glasgow will be a headache for the Prime Minister, with some Scots wary of Tory fiscal policies since the Community Charge was introduced in 1989 and scrapped after just four years. On Wednesday, Conservative welfare reform spokesman, Alex Johnstone said: “Universal Credit has the potential to enhance the living conditions of thousands of Scots and will stop people from becoming trapped into welfare dependency for longer than necessary. “The new benefits system is all about standing up for hard-working people and is a vital and long overdue improvement.

DAVID STEWART CONTROVERSIAL taxi company Uber have applied for a license to launch in Glasgow, with traditional firms wary over their use. The US company uses a mobile app to let the public see the nearest vehicle on a map, book the ride, and pay for their

journey. Uber claims it can cut taxi fares by a third but it has been dogged by criticism over the years that its use of unlicensed, crowd-sourced drivers is unsafe or illegal. The firm faced problems in Sydney, where fares rose due to demand during the café terror siege, in Germany where it was banned in Berlin

for legal shortcomings, and in India where a woman alleged she was raped by an Uber driver. The woman had summoned an Uber cab in December last year, travelling home after a late social event in south Delhi. She told police she had been sexually and violently assaulted by the car's driver.

Indian police arrested the suspect before announcing they were considering taking legal action against Uber for failing to carry out adequate background checks on the driver. CONT PAGE 8

MOD and BAE contract secures 600 Glasgow jobs

Rent in Scotland increasing slower than UK average. DAVID STEWART

ACCORDING to a new report, rents in Scotland have increased at a much slower rate compared to the rest of mainland Britain over the past four years

Move, said: "Scottish tenants are having a much smoother ride than their counterparts south of the border, with rental prices in Scotland climbing at a considerably slower pace.

Lettings agent network Your Move said rents north of the border had gone up by 5.3% since the last Holyrood election, in Wales and England they climbed by 9.6% over the same period.

"Despite snowballing demand for homes to let, the private rented sector has managed to shelter tenants from the worst extremes of rent inflation and rents have navigated an affordable route broadly trailing inflation."

The average rent for Scottish tenants is £536 per month, which is up from £509 in 2011. Your Move's Buy-to-Let index reported a 0.1% monthly dip in rental prices in Scotland in January, with the average monthly rent now 1.3% higher than a year ago, in comparison to England and Wales, where rents have risen year-on-year by 2.8%. In the past year, rents have risen in three out of five Scottish areas, according to the index. The east saw rents rise 3.2%, and in Glasgow and the Clyde area tenants are paying 1.3% more. In the south and in the Highlands and ago, Islands rents are lower now than a year dropping 1.6% and 1.4% respectively. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has signed a contract to build Royal Navy frigates with BAE Systems worth £859m that will sustain 1,700 jobs across the UK.

600 of the jobs that will be safeguarded by David Cameron's announcement are in Govan and Scotstoun, where BAE had suggested it may have to pull out in the event that Scotland voted ‘Yes’ in the independence referendum. Ian King, the chief executive of BAE, said last May in a letter submitted to the Scottish Affairs Committee that the future of the project would have to be discussed if Scotland voted 'Yes' in the September referendum. He said that "in the event of a Yes vote, and as we have made clear, we would be required to discuss the future of the Type 26 programme with our customer, the MoD." His comments were interpreted by some to mean that the shipyards might have to close.Welcoming the announcement last week, the Prime Minister said: "This is a substantial investment in our shipbuilding industry, safeguarding the jobs of 600 workers in Scotland and many more across the UK.

"Investing in these warships will ensure we continue to keep our country safe, at home and abroad. "As part of our long term economic plan, we're not just building the most advanced modern warships in the world - we are building the careers of many young people with apprenticeships that will set them up for life." BAE had said the future of the yards at Govan and Scotstoun was directly tied into the Type 26 frigates. The Type 26, also known as the Global Combat Ship, is the next generation of high-tech warship designed to cope with the future requirements of the Royal Navy. The signing of the contract was delayed until after the referendum on 18 September, 2014, after the Scottish Secretary said the plan to build the vessels in Glasgow could be endangered by a 'Yes' vote. The Type 26's manufacturing phase is expected to begin in Glasgow in 2016. The first frigate is due to enter service in the early 2020s, with the class of ship expected to remain in service until 2060.

COUNCIL LEVELS ON ‘FAMOUS’ STEPS DAVID STEWART

DEMOLITION is confirmed for the steps outside Glasgow Royal Concert Hall after the council voted for plans to extend the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre. In their place is slated a new atrium which will serve as access to both the shopping centre and the concert hall. Hundreds had took to social media to voice how cherished they thought the steps. But Glaswegians’ opinions were mixed on how truly iconic the steps were. Graeme Hendry, SNP councillor for Garscadden/Scotstounhill, was disappointed at the decision to demolish the steps. Speaking on Twitter, Hendry said it was a “very sad decision” and conveyed a “lack of ambition in Glasgow.” Those in opposition to the demolition had argued that the steps were a unique part of the city’s heritage, others thought the replacement plan was no improvement on the current site. But the city council argue the new atrium will make it easier for the differently-abled to reach the concert hall, as the new entrance will have lifts to take visitors to the reception. The steps were only built in 1999 and are situated on the site of arguably a greater loss to Glasgow’s landscape. Parliamentary Road, which ran from the concert hall site to Cathedral Street, was demolished in the 1970s.

Increase in Glasgow to Isle of Man flights Citywing this week announced a further increase on their flights between the Isle of Man and Glasgow for summer 2015. Citywing will now offer 11 return flights a week from 1st May. They are the only airline who offer a direct route between Scotland and the Island David Buck, Managing Director at Citywing, said: ‘We are delighted to be able to increase our services to Glasgow this summer and believe we have covered all the bases with the changes in our scheduling. Our business passengers can now take advantage of a day return whilst the leisure traveller can enjoy short breaks off the Island with weekend travel now being more available. With support from the Isle of Man Government, we will also be promoting the Island as a destination in Glasgow, which will be a further benefit to the Island.’ Paul White, Business Development Manager at Glasgow Airport, said: ‘We were delighted when Citywing decided to reinstate this important business and tourism link in 2014. It is very encouraging to see Citywing increasing the number of flights it operates, which just goes to show how successful the route has been with our customer base. We wish Citywing continued success with this route, which offers the only direct route between Scotland and the Isle of Man, and look forward to working closely with the airline to ensure its continued success at Glasgow Airport.’

1000 job opportunities to be created for young people More than 1,000 job opportunities for unemployed young people will be created as part of a £6.1 million investment, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced this week, ahead of a major speech on education. The announcement comes as the First Minister prepares to address the David Hume Institute as part of their 'What sort of Scotland do we wish to create?' series.

Investment in education is the ‘foundation of a fairer Scotland’

First Minister

Ms Sturgeon will use the speech to say that investing in our young people – from early years

to education to employment opportunities is the ‘foundation of a fairer Scotland’. Calling for Scotland to become “a land of opportunity” she will set out ways in which we can remove the barriers that some people face and ensure that education - from birth to adulthood - plays a key role in tackling inequality and growing the economy.

first experience of work, this government is committed to promoting opportunities and reducing inequalities “Because education is not just part of our sense of ourselves, it’s the key to a better future for young people growing up in Scotland today. And it is at the heart of the fairer, more prosperous Scotland, that all of us seek to build.”

In the speech Ms Sturgeon will say: “The education I got is a major reason why I’m able to stand here today as the First Minister of Scotland. So it’s important to me personally that every young girl and boy growing up today – regardless of their background – gets the chance to do the same. “The removal of obstructions to education, and the opening up of new opportunities, has been the focus of many of the major initiatives of my first 100 days. “From supporting mothers in the early stages of pregnancy, to helping people gain their

The investment of over £6 million will support a further 1,000 job opportunities as part of the next phase of the Community Jobs Scotland (CJS) programme, which is delivered in partnership with SCVO. For the first time this year, employers will also be supported by the Scottish Government to pay CJS employees the Living Wage. More than 5,500 young people have benefited from the programme which offers unemployed vulnerable people, aged 16 to 24, 6-18 month training posts and has helped the Third Sector by providing financial

support to host employers. The First Minister added: “On the day I was sworn in as First Minister I set out my commitment to make sure that everyone in Scotland - no matter their background - has the best chance to get on in life. “This £6.1 million investment will deliver over 1000 job opportunities for young people in Scotland who are, for one reason or another, struggling to find work. This funding will help to give them the training, skills and confidence to achieve what they want to in life. “We have seen many success stories from this programme. This year, following recommendations on how to best develop our young workforce, we will offer additional support to those who need it most, such as care leavers. “And importantly to ensure young people get a fair start in employment all of those taking part in the programme will have the opportunity to benefit from the Living Wage.”

COLLEGE OBE BOSS SUSPENDED DAVID STEWART THE PRINCIPAL of a prominent city college has been suspended. Glasgow Clyde College principal Susan Walsh was suspended on full pay. The vice-principal, Eleanor Harris, will take over Walsh’s duties, pending a review of the suspension. No reason has been given by Glasgow Clyde College for the suspension. The college was formed in 2013 following the merging of Langside, Cardonald, and Anniesland colleges. A report by Education Scotland recently commended her leadership and the suspension comes just months after Walsh was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list. But there are also understood to be proposed cuts to the college’s budget. Proposals state that the college will suffer a £1.7m cut in funding, in a move criticised by teaching unions, warning that it could lead to a twotier system across the campuses. The college gave a statement to The Herald: “The Board of Management of Glasgow Clyde College met this evening and ratified the decision of the Chair and Vice Chair to suspend the Principal on full pay pending a review.” Walsh is a member of several Board of Managements, including the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Glasgow to host 'Earth Hour' event It was announced this week that Glasgow is to celebrate Earth Hour with a packed programme of activities in the city centre. The plans to promote WWF's Earth Hour, where millions of people from all over the world will switch off lights in a symbolic display of environmental awareness, have earned the council the title of Super Local Authority. Organised as part of Glasgow's Green Year 2015 campaign, the event will demonstrate the city's commitment to building a sustainable future and tackling climate change. Iconic Glasgow landmarks - such as the City Chambers, University of Glasgow, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and Mitchell Library - will be plunged in to darkness at 8:30pm on Saturday March 28th. They will join some of the most famous buildings and structures in the world in approximately 7000 cities and towns in over 150 countries, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Acropolis in Athens and Sydney's Opera House.

"2015 is Glasgow's Green Year and we wanted to do something special that would fit the occasion and engage the entire community. "This year is all about raising awareness of the changes we can make to our everyday lives to help protect our environment, and Earth Hour is a simple but spectacular way of achieving this. "I hope that everyone will switch off their lights for one hour and come and join us for the free, fun and above all green activities in George Square." Between 8 and 10pm on Saturday March 28th, George Square will become the hub for Earth Hour Glasgow. Information stalls will offer the public advice on how they can reduce their carbon footprint, conserve energy and save money. Meanwhile a stunning WWF display of animals endangered due to climate change will be projected on to the Glasgow City Chambers. Home Energy Trust's Doug the Caterpillar will be in attendance, allowing fans to pose with the lovable mascot for a great selfie opportunity.

There will also be a range of fun activities to try, from 'glow in the dark' putting and an illuminated bike ride, to cycle power demonstrations and an energy generating dance mat. Lang Banks, WWF Scotland Director, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be able to recognise Glasgow City Council for all their efforts in support of our annual Earth Hour initiative. "This award clearly demonstrates the massive commitment of the council and its residents to tackling climate change and protecting our brilliant planet. "We look forward to working with Glasgow again for Earth Hour 2015 in March." WWF's annual Earth Hour inspires communities from across the globe to come together and do their bit to protect the planet and promote greener living. Individuals and organisations in Glasgow are encouraged to pledge their support for Earth Hour 2015 by signing up online at www. wwfscotland.org.uk/earthhour

The announcement comes as Bailie Liz Cameron, Chair of Green Year 2015, accepted an award from WWF for Glasgow City Council's contribution to Earth Hour 2014. Bailie Cameron said: "To receive this award for or our efforts during Earth Hour 2014 is fantastic, and we are aiming for this year's celebrations to be bigger and better than ever.

Former editor of the NOTW to stand trial in Scotland A TRIAL date has been set for Andy Coulson, the former editor of the News of the World, on a charge of perjury. The trial will begin on 21 April in Edinburgh and is scheduled to last for six weeks. Coulson attended the high court in Edinburgh on Monday, accompanied by his wife Eloise, to hear the date set. The charge is in relation to Mr Coulson allegedly lying in court while giving evidence at the 2010 trial of former Scottish MSP Tommy Sheridan and his wife Gail.

DOCTOR IN CHILD PORN GUILTY PLEA A DOCTOR has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography after a raid on his flat in Glasgow. Police searching Brian Morris’s rented flat in Hyndland found hundreds of indecent photographs of children. On analysing Morris’s laptop, police found nearly 500 illegal photographs and 23 illegal videos. The Glasgow University graduate is now a patient at Gartnavel Hospital. He pled guilty to the charge of downloading and possessing child pornography, between November 2013 and March 2014. Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that Morris worked as a doctor at a local hospital. Police entered the doctor’s flat on Princes Terrace and took his laptop, later examined by experts. The court heard that 481 photographs were recovered. They were marked as ranging from one to four in a severity rating used by the police. There were no level 5 – the most severe - images found. But one of the 23 videos found on Dr Morris’s laptop was put at Level 5 on the same severity scale. Brian Morris is now suspended and made no comment during interview by police, he refused to respond when cautioned and charged. Sentencing was deferred until next month by Sheriff Scullion, presiding.

Uber Continued from page 1 DAVID STEWART

Uber later said it would introduce a panic button in India following the alleged rape. The alert is part of the app used by Indian customers, who can also program it with up to five safety contacts. Rape Crisis Scotland told The Glasgow News: “It is of paramount importance that any taxi firm carries out proper checks on all its taxi drivers.” Black cabbies brought London to a standstill when protesting over the company’s use of an app-based fare calculator, which they say amounted to a meter, a device only Hackney cabs may use. But Uber taxis have proved a hit with many across the UK, having extended beyond London to Manchester, Leeds, and Liverpool. Fares are understood to be a third cheaper than regular taxis. Payment is cashless via their app and users can see the cost of their journey before they get in the vehicle. A Glasgow City Council official said: “We can confirm an application for a taxi booking office has been received and will be

considered in due course.” Stephen Flynn, vice-chair for Glasgow Taxis Ltd, told The Glasgow News: “Third party systems can’t guarantee the same level of regulation and, when passenger safety should be absolutely paramount, that is concerning. “Through the introduction of new features such as its popular app and chip and pin system, our company will continue improving its service with customer safety and convenience front of mind.” But Uber insists safety is at the heart of their business. “Safety is Uber’s number one priority. In the UK all Uber drivers are fully licensed by the local authority and go through the same exact checks all private hire drivers have to go through. “The Uber app then provides further safety measures ensuring it’s not only the most convenient, but also the safest ride in town. We are hugely excited by the reaction we have received from our riders and drivers in the cities we currently operate in. “We hope to be able to bring our service to Scotland.”

BLIND SOUTHSIDER’S WALK OF KINDNESS

David Stewart

A BLIND Southside resident who survived a double organ transplant is building on a phenomenal charitable record by organising a sponsored walk. Diagnosed with diabetes at eight years old and needing daily injections as a teenager, Russell MacMillan faced a life familiar to many across Scotland with type one diabetes.

But the pet supply businessman’s condition yet worsened and due to diabetic retinopathy, he went blind at the tender age of 22. As if matters weren’t grave enough, Russell’s diabetes meant he later needed a new kidney and a new pancreas. He received both organs in an eight-hour operation in 2007. Since 2007 Russell has set up his own charity, East Renfrewshire Good Causes, and amassed an incredible record in charity work. In recognition of his altruism, he was chosen to carry the Commonwealth Baton along part of its Southside route last year. Russell has raised over £200,000 through ER Good Causes. The charity has provided wheelchairs, funded an emergency food project, and given furniture to former homeless people with severe disabilities. The whole effort has been an act of gratitude towards the donors who saved his

life, says Russell. Now he is asking the public in advance to take part in his new charity walk. “I say to everyone that it isn’t ‘Russell’ who has done this charity work. I would not be here without the person who most generously chose to be an organ donor. “That person is central to all charity work we do. They live on in me and their kindness is a huge driving force in everything I do. “My Christian beliefs encourage me to love my neighbour. I invite people, of any faith or none, to join in the sponsored walk and extend the chain of kindness that originated from that one person’s gift of life to me.” But Russell says people can walk however far they want, even asking the less able to do just ten yards for a donation. The main purpose of this fun event is to raise money for East Renfrewshire Good Causes. 75%

Around the World in Over 100 Dishes COOK and Indi’s World Buffet, the rapidly expanding restaurant chain, opened its biggest and most prominent outlet in Glasgow to date last night, when it completed the transformation of the former Harry Ramsden’s flagship outlet into its latest eatery. Confirming that the West of Scotland is rapidly developing a taste for its pioneering ‘world on a plate’ offering, the latest Cook and Indi’s World Buffet – its third in Glasgow and the seventh in the fast growing chain – caters for more than 200 diners at its latest outlet opposite the popular Springfield Quay at 251 Paisley Road. Indi Singh, co-founder of the restaurant, said: “Securing such landmark premises on such a prominent location represents a tremendous coup for our expanding chain and signals our ambitions to take our pioneering concept to the next stage of its development. “Our new Glasgow restaurant offers diners even more dishes from around the world and features an extensive live buffet laden with fresh produce, including a special Halal meat counter. “A live grill features everything from Piri Piri chicken to BBQ beef burgers – whilst the heritage of the site is acknowledged by the creation of a special ‘Harry’s Fish & Chips’ counter.” No expense has been spared in transforming the landmark building into a lavish eatery, the centrepiece of which is a huge colourful mural running the entire length of one wall

depicting iconic landmarks from around the world – from India’s Taj Mahal, Rome’s Coliseum, the Eiffel Tower in Paris to a taxi rank in Glasgow city centre. With a variety of dishes ranging from pizza to pastas, starters to salads, sushi to noodles and pakoras to curries, Cook and Indi’s World Buffet offers seven different cuisines (Indian, Japanese, Sushi, Chinese, Italian, Spanish and Mexican) and over 100 dishes. And its fixed price system, which starts from just £5.99, means that diners can eat as much as they want – whether double or triple helpings – which appeals to everyone, children and pensioner alike. “The idea behind our World Buffet is to bring together various cuisines from different parts of the world so that when families are dining out there’s no need for an argument about which restaurant to go to because we offer food to suit everyone’s tastes!” said Singh. Cook & Indi’s World Buffets are located at Bishopbriggs, Darnley, Glasgow, Hamilton and Johnstone. Find it on facebook @ cookandindisworldbuffet and follow it on twitter @CookandIndis.

percent of money will see its way there, with the rest going to other local charities. Eastwood Rotary Club will help organise the event. The club was established in 1970 and is a vibrant and growing club with a varied mix of members. It maintains a busy timetable of charitable and social activities. The club’s stated aim is to enjoy socialising whilst seeking fun ways to raise money that helps the local community. There are over 1.2 million Rotarians across the globe and Eastwood is one of 50 in the west of Scotland. The club said: “We don’t mind how much or little of the course you cover as it’s all fun with a little bit of fundraising on the side. “So get your running shoes, walking boots or into your wheelchair or stroller and do your own unique ‘Walk for Eastwood’ and help support a great campaign.”

“There are two messages I want to encourage with my charity work”, says Russell, “I want to spread the messaging of loving your neighbour and offer to people the idea of becoming an organ donor. “I would not be here without that beautiful soul who chose to give me a chance at life when theirs ended.” The walk is on Sunday 26 April 2015 - any time between 9am and 4pm – at Rouken Glen Park. West end restaurant offers VIP Police appeal after man down in Jordanhill Pick up service for local diners knocked Police are appealing to a man

Although the little venue at 61 Otago Street has seen a selection of venues come and go over the years, this time it hopes to offer something extra special.

A new steak house Tiffney's, which is named after owner Raymond Walters' great grandfather, has recently opened as an intimate restaurant in the west end. The venue promises to cater for families and couples looking for a romantic meal while also offering a free pick up and drop off service. "We had to think what would get people here as it's not quite Gibson Street, but a bit in between," Raymond told STV Glasgow. "So what we've done is bought a people's carrier for free customer collection and drop off that can seat up to seven people. "This is a G12 postcode and we cater for the G11 and G3 postcode they can ask to be picked up for their meal and when they finish their dinner they can get a lift home.

"It makes it easier to get here meaning that they don't have to bring their car and cuts out the need for taxis which gives them an extra bit of spend in here." There will also be a 'dine and drop' service for those heading to the SSE Hydro for a concert in the evening if you mention it beforehand when booking. Parking is no longer an issue either as Raymond said: "We have drawn up some permits which you can pick up then park around the corner, behind the restaurant. "The owner of the block of flats behind us has given us permission to use the space as nobody else seems to need it." As for the menu, there will be an a la carte, pre theatre and a special three course Sunday plus downsized portions for kids. There are also fish and vegetarian offerings, using seasonal ingredients with everything being handmade including the pastas.

who was knocked down in the early hours of last Sunday morning to contact them. It happened at around 2:55am when a van travelling east on Victoria Park Drive North, Jordanhill, Glasgow, struck a man crossing the road. The driver of the van stopped and got out of the vehicle to see how he was but he got up and walked away. However, it would appear that he was injured, possibly bleeding from a head wound. The man is described as white, approximately 20 years old, of slim build, and was wearing a ‘Puffa’ type jacket which may have been ripped as a result of the impact. Inspector Jeff Harper, Govan Police Office, is appealing for the man to get in touch, he said: “Although it would appear that he was injured as a result of the crash, the man got up and, although unsteady on

his feet, walked off towards Beresford Ave, Jordanhill.” “It is possible that he lives locally and went home, however, the van was badly damaged by the impact so we need to get a hold of the man to see if he is ok.” “Officers, supported by the Dog Branch and Support Unit Officers and the Air Support Unit, have been searching the surrounding area. Door to door enquiries are being carried out just now.” “Padding from what we believe to be the man’s jacket and small traces of blood were found in Beresford Ave, towards Mitre Road and Westland Drive but nothing since then.” “I would ask that the man, or anyone who recognises his description, contact police or get him to seek medical assistance.” Information can be passed to officers at Partick Police Office on the nonemergency number 101.

“WE’VE ONLY GONEAND DONE IT!” - GARDEN CAMPAIGNERS

DAVID STEWART

RESIDENTS are celebrating after winning a lengthy battle to stop housing being built on a cherished community garden.

to build the house. 135 objections were lodged at the meeting, with two local politicians backing the residents: Ann McKechin MP and Sandra White MSP.

Campaigners went all out to stop a property development on a garden in North Kelvinside marked for its historical significance. The garden, located on the corner of Wilton Street and Doune Gardens, was earmarked for housing by Spectrum Properties. More than 70 people attended a meeting earlier this month at Kelvinbridge Parish Church to oppose the property firm’s application for planning permission

North Kelvin Community Council lodged a complaint against the proposed development and residents were backed by local heritage group Friends of Glasgow West. “We’ve only gone and done it”, exclaimed Jock Morris, who has tended the garden for over a decade. “This issue has been on-going for a long time now,” said Morris, “we did our best to make it clear that

this garden is part of a Victorian architectural design and part of our community heritage. “Our green spaces mean a great deal to us and this garden has local and cultural value. “The garden was intended for the community in perpetuity. We were optimistic that we could stop the development and thankful to everyone who helped. “Particularly we’d all like to thank Ann Laird, Iain Wotherspoon and everyone at Friends of Glasgow West for their valuable support and advice. I’m grateful to all residents who came together to save the garden.” The defeated property firm is run by,

convicted fraudster, Bill Roddie - who had another dispute with the public last year over the closure of a horseriding centre for the differently-abled. Sandra White MSP, representing Glasgow Kelvin, said: “I put my concerns about the proposed development in the form of an objection. These gardens comprise the green lungs of the area and could be of great use for people to use for picnics, relaxation, and recreation. “They are a historical part of Kelvinbridge. For years, residents have taken it upon themselves to tend to the garden.” Bill Roddie said he had no comment at this time.

MP to host Living Wage event at Hillhead Library Ann McKechin, MP for the Glasgow North Constituency, Will be hosting a Living Wage event on Thursday 26th February at 6.30pm at Hillhead Library (348 Byres Road) with Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, Richard Leonard, Political Officer GMB Scotland and Ann Gow, Hon. Sec. of UCU Glasgow University. The Glasgow North MP has been campaigning for a “fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work” since last year, where she joined forces with her Scottish Labour colleagues in campaigning for uprating the living wage to £7.85 per hour. Ms McKechin said in her blog this week: “I know from speaking to people in Glasgow that they want real change, not just empty words and hollow promises. There is a lot of backing in Glasgow for fairer living standards, and alongside my Sottish Labour parliamentary colleagues I strongly believe that everyone deserves a fair days pay for a hard day’s work. “That is why the Scottish Labour party support the uprating of the living wage to £7.85 an hour, and have called on both UK and Scottish Governments to match Labour’s ambitions for the living wage. Scientists at the University of Glasgow have this week seemingly made the impossible possible – by making light travel slower than the speed of light.

Lighten Up If the surfaces in your small space are bold and dark, try painting or resurfacing with lighter colours to give it a new, more open air. Dark colours can sometimes feel heavy and oppressive in small areas, while bright colours tend to open up spaces. Once you’ve brightened the colour scheme, a well-placed mirror can create a very pleasing illusion of even more space.

Kill the Clutter Efficient utilisation of space is a necessity in small spaces. When space is limited, unnecessary messes can cause a room to feel even more cramped and chaotic. In addition to keeping a general mindset of tidiness, be sure to consider unique storage options that keep clutter off of visible surfaces and entirely out of mind.

Defy Tradition When designing a space, you can’t be tied down by decorating dogmas. Maybe you don’t need a hanging chandelier in your formal dining room. Perhaps a pair of small end tables could replace the coffee table in that small living room. By questioning norms, you’ll find ways to open up even the smallest of spaces.

Turn Cramped into Cosy When you encounter a small space, consider the fact that your glass might be half full. Rather than running away from tight quarters, try embracing the lack of space. Small spaces can feel cosy, warm, and private. To accentuate those positive aspects, just add elements commonly found in comfortable spaces, including reading lamps, throw blankets, etc. Whether you have 500 or 5,000 square feet in your home, you probably have a small space that you’d like to keep fun and functional. Use these tips, along with other tried and trusted methods to make the space feel more open and inviting. With a little bit of work, you may find that your small space begins to feel an awful lot like a home.

Buying a house? Top 10 tips 1. On an initial inspection try not to see the house as a home but simply as a building that needs inspecting. 2. Even in a fast-moving market, it’s a bad idea to buy unseen. The more times you view a house, the more likely you are to spot potential problems. 3. Spend 15 to 30 minutes looking around the property, and view it three or four times at different times of day to find out how the light and surrounding noises change. 4. Spend at least half an hour walking around the general area and revisit at rush hour and when the pubs close, on weekends and weekdays. 5. Look at the structure of the building. For example, if there are hairline cracks in the walls, investigate further. 6. Use your nose as well as your eyes: damp can give off a musty smell even if you don’t see physical signs. 7. If you do spot faults, you shouldn’t necessarily be put off buying - you could use what you’ve discovered to negotiate on the price. 8. The seller doesn’t have to tell you about problems - in fact they may try to hide them. Common cover-ups include painting over damp and hiding wall cracks or floor problems with furniture or rugs. 9. If there’s any vagueness or uncertainty over who owns a garden or parking space, make sure you find out the answer and get it confirmed in writing. 10. People often think they’ve had a proper survey when actually they’ve just had a mortgage valuation. Ask the selling agent for the home report, which includes a survey.

An honest and revealing 20th anniversary portrait of the multi-platinum boy band, plus a live performance. They are the biggest boy band in history, with 130 million album sales to their credit. But what happened when the Grammy-nominated Backstreet Boys became men? In 2012, the original line-up reunited for the first time in six years. Cameras were on hand to follow them to a London recording studio to start work on their new album and plan their 20th anniversary relaunch. From Stephen Kijak, lauded director of ‘Scott Walker: 30 Century Man’, this surprisingly intimate and emotional documentary is an extraordinary account of ambition, fame, betrayal and renewal. It addresses openly old tensions and rivalries between these five likeable, hard-working lifelong friends who achieved so much together. This premiere screening will be followed by an exclusive live satellite performance by the Backstreet Boys, who will be playing some of their favourite tracks.

During the London Gay Pride March of 1984, activist Mark (Ben Schnetzer) makes a momentous decision. As a gesture of solidarity, he decides to form an organisation called Lesbians and Gay Men Support the Miners. They raise heaps of cash, but can’t find any striking mineworkers who are prepared to accept it. Eventually, they make contact with a small Welsh pit village, whose representative, Dai (Paddy Considine), invites the activists to pay a visit. The stage is set for old prejudices to be challenged and new friendships formed. This rousing, fact-based crowd-pleaser in the tradition of ‘The Full Monty’ boasts a terrific British cast. Its ranks include Imelda Staunton as the formidable community organiser Hefina, Bill Nighy as shy and cultured miner Cliff, and Dominic West as flamboyantly gay actor Jonathan. Writer Stephen Beresford and Producer David Livingstone received the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

Richard Gere checks in with the A-list cast for the continuing adventures of elderly Britons in an Indian retirement hotel. Jaipur’s Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful has become a huge success for ambitious young Sonny (Dev Patel). Muriel (Maggie Smith) is now installed as his business partner. Douglas (Bill Nighy) and Evelyn (Judi Dench) have also joined the workforce. And with new arrivals Lavinia (Tamsin Greig) and American writer Guy (Richard Gere) vying for the one remaining room, it’s clearly time for expansion. But busy Sonny is also occupied by his impending marriage to Sunaina (Tena Desae). This love in the air seems to be contagious. Madge (Celia Imrie) swoons over suave, handsome Guy, while Douglas and Evelyn’s romance continues to develop. The original director, writer and magnificent main cast of the delightful 2012 sleeper hit reunite for this eagerly anticipated sequel. Deliciously unexpected developments are promised!

A teenage girl is stalked by something deeply sinister in this unnerving horror movie with a chilling twist. Carefree Detroit 19-yearold Jay (Maika Monroe) makes the biggest mistake of her young life when she’s seduced by Hugh (Jake Weary). He promptly ties her to a chair and explains that he has passed on a curse. From now on, she will be pursued relentlessly by a supernatural shape-shifter which can take the zombie-like form of friends or strangers. It won’t stop until she is dead. And only way to distance herself from this terror is to pass on the hex by sleeping with someone else! A hit at Cannes and the London Film Festival, David Robert Mitchell’s stylish, suspenseful horror film taps into deep-seated fears. Its mounting sense of dread driven by a haunting electronic score, this is a film that gets under your skin in the tradition of ‘Ring’ and John Carpenter’s original ‘Halloween’.

Gig of the Week: Them Beatles at Sloans Grand

Ballroom (Saturday 21st February)

I’ll put it out there; The Beatles are my favourite band of all time. No band before or since has managed to tap into the fundamentals of human happiness like the Fab Four did. And watching the Greatest Beatles Tribute Act in the World, Them Beatles, you are guaranteed a joyous experience. Joe Kane (Macca), Clark Gilmour (Lennon), Craig McGown (George) and Grahame Critcher (Ringo) are so similar in sound and look, you can close your eyes and believe it’s the real thing. Playing in the beautiful old Grand Ballroom in Sloans they knocked out a three part set of early Beatles numbers, Sgt Pepper’s era tunes and then the later classics.

Photography by M J Windebank

They had three costume changes to match the eras with an attention to detail that shows how serious they take their craft. The crowd sang every word back at them in full voice and there was definitely a lot of, “peace and love man” in the room. Speaking to Macca, sorry, Joe Kane afterwards, he said, “We’re over the moon with a fab turn out for another sell out Glasgow show! The support of our hometown fans means everything to us and hopefully over the next year we can aim even higher. Our sights are firmly set on Glasgow’s number one music venue- the legendary Glasgow Barrowlands!” I’m sure “it won’t be long” until they are playing the legendary venue. www.thembeatles.com

Welcome back for your weekly hit of music news and reviews. Album of the Week: The Race

for Space by Public Service Broadcasting (Believe Recordings)

Public Service Broadcasting are the London based multi-instrumental pseudonymous duo, J. Willgoose, Esq. and Wrigglesworth. Their mission is to, “teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future”. Their sound is a majestic fusion of guitars, drums, electronics, brass and samples from archive footage, old public information films and propaganda material. This follow-up to their 2013 debut, Inform-Educate-Entertain, focuses on the space race between the Soviets and the US. It really captures the awe and wonder man’s reach for the stars imbued on the world. From the opening number, The Race for Space (with a heartfelt address from JFK), to the sadness tinged Fire in the Cockpit (about the tragedy of Apollo 1), to the fast-paced funk of Gagarin and the palpable tension of The Other Side (when Apollo 8 went round the dark side of the Moon and lost radio contact), this is an album that makes history sound good.

Interview of the Week: Thunder Superfan by M J Windebank Super Rock legends, Thunder, were in Glasgow to celebrate the launch of their new album, Wonder Days, with their loving fans. An HMV signing, and an intimate acoustic rhythm and blues show at the Garage Attic made for a truly great evening for lucky ticket holders.

Single of the Week: Cobbler Clarence by The Fast Camels (Magic Optician Records.

Glasgow/Paisley band The Fast Camels are back with their new EP. If you’re a fan of 60’s psychedelia and bands like Love and The Coral this will be right up your street. Expertly crafted with great melodies, Byrdsesque harmonies and percussion flitting in and out, it has a few interesting changes of pace to keep the listener on their toes. You could listen to this song 100 times and still find something new in it each time and it has a great lyrical chorus, “Look at all those nameless faces, walking miles and miles; Going round the same old places, hanging round the same old town…” With six tracks on the EP you definitely get your money’s worth! Available from their web shop www.thefastcamels.com/shop

I got chatting to one super fan Cat (aka Thunder Cat), who told me that she had named her first born son Luke after Thunders Luke Morley. She has been a lifelong fan of the band, her father took her to experience her first Thunder gig back when she was a teenager and she’s been completely hooked ever since. She was over the moon about the new album, “I’ve waited 7 years for this!” When I told her that I had become a recent fan of Thunder myself she said that I absolutely

must see a full electric Thunder concert, “they will blow your mind”. I got my chance to chat to Thunder after the show, I asked them what they thought about playing in Glasgow. They all said “we love coming to Glasgow, the crowd is always guaranteed to be amazing!”. Top music tip from drummer Harry James, “don’t practice too much alone, find some like minds and make something happen”. Watch out for a full Thunder live tour coming soon. Contact me below if you have new music coming out and/or live dates coming up. Have a great week y'all! Peace, love and Mustard. David “Dijancer” Blair FB: Dijancer Dijon Twitter: @DavidJBlair

Record Store of the Week: Love Music Glasgow, 34 Dundas Street, Glasgow, G1 2AQ Love Music is an independent record store tucked away on Dundas Street, the little side street beside Queen Street Station. They sell a mixture of new releases, back catalogue and second hand CD’s and LP’s. Owned by music business veteran Sandy McLean, a Scottish-Canadian who visited Glasgow in 1977 for his university gap year, and never went back. Sandy started in the record retailing business at Bruce’s Records, the chain founded by the man who discovered and managed Simple Minds, Bruce Findlay. Over the next 35 years Sandy gained

experience by working at other outlets; such as Virgin, Fopp, Rough Trade, Fast Product and finally Avalanche Records, who opened in Glasgow in 1996. Since working in the independent distribution business for Rough Trade and the Cartel in the 80s, Sandy’s main musical interest is in Scottish independent releases. With the constantly evolving music retail business, Scottish labels have found it harder and harder to get UK distribution and sell physical product. Love Music attempts to highlight the best new Scottish music both in it’s physical record shop and in it’s online stores on eBay, Amazon and Discogs. Love Music has had some fantastic

in-store appearances over the years; Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 having a Dance Off that spilled out into the street and instore crowdsurfing, Glasvegas, Moby and a lengthy list of other up and coming Scottish artists. Love Music is an original Record Store Day participant, stocking most of the 500 new vinyl records that come out on the day, and having live music from a broad selection of artists. Check out their Facebook page for photos of some of the live shows; it’s a great way to check out some of the finest new music in the country. www.lovemusicglasgow. com Twitter: @LoveMusicGlasgo

TODAY’S TOUGHIE

SUDOKU

Health and Beauty with Joan Robertson How to take years off your eyes! I am always astounded when young women tell me they do not use eye cream. It seems that ‘we believe’ that eye cream is something you use when you already have the lines around them?! How silly is that? Its all about PREVENTION and so the way forward is to start using eye cream in your early twenties.

CROSSWORD Answers located on page 27

pea size to the bone area around the outside of the eye and gently tap it in. Never put on more as that can cause puffiness. If you are prone to puffy eyes then tap along the ‘bag’ gently to in front of the ear. This is where your lymph node lies to drain away excess.

I’m sure if you ask famous beautiful women like Susan Sarandon or Gwyneth Paltrow what is the thing they would say to their younger self with regard to skin care and they would almost certainly say ‘I wish I had paid more attention to the use of eye cream.’

Do this movement several times am and pm to help take away puffiness. Drinking water helps enormously as does exercise. If puffiness is still present then chill two spoons in the freezer and hold then on your eyes. Do your eyes a favour and get 8 hours sleep and see the difference! Also reduce your stress by getting to a yoga class and practice deep breathing.

Patisserie Apostrophe

18 Woodlands Road, Glasgow G3 6UR, Woodlands, West End

It will come as no great surprise to you that I always get a little bit over excited when I see a new cafe or restaurant open in my stomping ground in the west end of the city. So I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that the old Grassroots shop on Woodlands, which had lain empty for nearly 2 years had been let and was being subdivided into 2 unit…one of which was to become a patisserie. How awfully posh! I was beside myself and couldn’t wait until it opened..which is now has. As you can imagine I immediately set up my first coffee date and went scampering down for breakfast with my buddy and fellow tea lover GlasgowDragonfly. Inside Patisserie Apostrophe is lovely, although not what I was expecting, I was expecting a French boudoir feel but it has a much more traditional west end cafe vibe. There is plenty of pine tables and chairs dotted around if you want to sit in, the walls are painted a plain white with french inspired art dotted around and it’s flooded with natural light from the 2 huge windows. All in all a lovely area to sit for a few hours over a few coffees and chat…. which we happily did. The staff are lovely, they came to ask if I wanted my toast buttered from my order and were friendly enough. My only slight niggle was that the waitress never came over

to ask if I wanted another drink even though we were the only ones in, so I had to shout at her across the cafe to ask for another. The menu is slightly French inspired - filled croissants, baguettes, wraps and panini with some rather delicious sounding fillings, there are also some rather tempting sounding salad bowls to choose from. The chilled cabinet held some very beautiful looking pastries and cakes although it is rather sparse at the moment, I would imagine this will fill up with more options over time as the cafe become more popular and busy. As it was 9am I decided to order one of their breakfast options and went for the scrambled egg on wholegrain toast and a decaf latte. The food arrived reasonably quickly, when it was delivered the waitress advised it had been seasoned with salt and pepper but she had brought me extra in case I wanted to add more - a nice touch I thought. It was pleasant enough scrambled egg on toast, it didn’t blow my taste buds away but then for £4.25 including the coffee and a fruit juice I was very pleased with what I was served and would definitely order it again. A lovely addition to Woodlands and I very much enjoyed my first proper visit, so much so that I am already organising my next.

Ed Sheeran – maybe he was drunk again.

Madonna Takes a Trip Madonna took a nasty fall Wednesday while performing her new single “Living For Love” at the 2015 Brit Awards in London’s O2 Arena. During the song, a dancer yanked on Madonna’s extra-long cape, causing the 56-yearold singer to tumble backwards down a flight of steps. Fortunately, despite the ugly spill, Madonna is okay, well as ok as a 56 year old dressed as an 18 year old can be.

How much skin is too much skin?

He wanted to be drunk when he wake up on the right side of the wrong bed. And on Thursday morning, we think Ed Sheeran got just what he wanted. He had a few reasons to celebrate, and by the looks of this picture, it seems he done just that. Earlier in the night, the Thinking Out Loud hitmaker told hosts Ant and Dec he was hoping to avoid the cameras later so he could toast his success. He said: “I’ve got to perform and then I’ll drink. Don’t film me later!” He was last spotted leaving ‘The Box’ at 6am with fellow winner Sam Smith. We think it’ll be a while before he’s saying “Maybe I’ll get drunk again”

Rita Ora and model Irina Shayk definitely had no problems flirting with that line at Vanity Fair’s annual Oscars after party on Sunday night, where they both turned plenty of heads in very revealing dresses. They also noticeably ditched their underwear. After Rita took to the stage to sing her Oscar-nominated song “Grateful” from the movie Beyond the Lights, she slipped into this super-sheer Donna Karan dress that showed off a whole lot of booty. But the 29-year-old Sports Illustrated swimsuit model -- and soccer stud Cristiano Ronaldo’s ex-girlfriend -actually had her beat in this Atelier Versace design, which basically showed off her half-naked body. Paloma keeps the Faith

Kara Delevigne The Kardashian brood is ever-expanding as it is, but it should be noted that the clan is now apparently taking honorary members—that is, if you have certain qualifications, like being an internationally renowned supermodel, all-around It girl, and are maybe/possibly Kendall Jenner’s roommate. That’s right: Cara Delevingne has now been christened “Kara” by the sisters. How was the new nickname revealed? via Kardashian doctrine, aka Instagram, of course!

With her operatic eyebrows, dotty persona and her 40’s inspired haircut, there is something of the cartoon character about Paloma Faith. With her win as best British female at the Brits this week, beating Lily Allen and Ella Henderson, her moment has finally come. It was her 3rd nomination and prior to the show, she wasn’t too optimistic of her chances, grumbling: ‘They’ll probably keep nominating me until I’m 80 and give me a lifetime achievement award!’ However, in a tearful acceptance speech, Paloma said: ‘Wow. I’m so moved. It’s been a long time coming. “It’s taken me 14 years to stand up here and accept this award and it means so much to me. I want to dedicate this to all the underdogs and all the grafters.”

TRENDING Goodbye to Orange Wednesday

App of the week: SecretDJ Available on Google Play and iOS App Store: £Free

The future’s bright, the future’s Orange. No it’s not. Sadly this week saw the end of the much loved ‘Orange Wednesday’. Gone are the days when you would be texting your friends on Orange, looking for a code. Hey, it saved the best part of £10, so why not. For ten years Orange Wednesday gave us 2-for-1 at the Odeon Cinemas (and Pizza express) , but thanks to streaming services like Netflix, the number of people watching films on their phones, PCs and tablets at home is increasing, so the freebie has become less valuable. A spokesperson for the telecoms giant said: "Orange Wednesday launched over a decade ago and at its peak was a massive success and an iconic promotion. "After 10 great years our brand has changed and our customers’ viewing habits have also evolved so it’s time to move on. That’s why the final credits will roll for Orange Wednesdays at the end of February. We’re working on new customer entertainment rewards and we’ll provide more details soon.” Pirates of the Caribbean and Hunger Games star, Sam Claflin said the end of the deal could "potentially" have an impact on box office figures. "As much as I've never been with Orange mobiles, it's never really affected me personally. "I think you only have to look at the outstanding British film nominations [at the Baftas] to realise that there's such a vast range of different genres that are being made now. From Under the Skin to Paddington, it's such an incredible feat. "It is a shame that people aren't going to see them I suppose as much in the cinema because that's the real experience of film." To us consumers, this is the end of an era. There will be more tears shed over this than at the end of The Notebook! The years of free movies and pizza are over and EE certainly have their work cut out to come up with a better offer for their customers. Looks like we’ll be paying full price at the cinema next Wednesday.

Crossword Puzzel - Solution

This week’s App of the week isn’t a new release, it’s been around since October ’12, however it IS an APP for all music lovers, regardless of preferred genre. SecretDJ does exactly what it says on the tin. If your favourite bar or restaurant has signed up for the app then you can control the music played in the venue, all from the comfort of your 4ft wooden barstool, whilst staring in to a half empty pint of Camden Gentleman’s wit. To set the record straight, it doesn’t make you a ‘DJ’ of the Calvin Harris button pusher ilk, what it does do is let you play your favourite artists in your chosen pub or restaurant, without having to go to a jukebox, request it at the bar, or even worse, play it through your phone so everyone can hear! This means that you can listen to your guilty pleasures such as Taylor Swift and Shania Twain without anyone knowing it was you, the only sign that can give you away is if you start using your beer as a mic!

How does it work? Simple, download the APP, it uses your phones GPS to tell you where your nearest SecretDJ venue is. All you do now is take a seat, order a beer or a vino then sit back, open the APP and scroll through the wide range of music that’s available and play the DJ until your musicloving heart is content. You get 5 free credits to use each day, but you can also buy more if you haven’t heard enough of ‘Shake it off’, from just £0.50 Secret DJ also has a feed that lets you know who’s playing what on the jukebox in nearby venues, so you can decide where you want to grab a quick beer dependent on who’s in there and the tunes currently on. Also, when you enter a location that is part of the Secret DJ alliance you can ‘check in’ on your smartphone, and if you don’t want to be too secret and let everyone know what you’re listening to and where, then you can share all the songs, people and places you like via Twitter and Facebook. You can also play songs in bars when you’re not even there. So if you got refused one last pint last night, or that member of bar-staff knocked you back the previous weekend, then open up the venue on your app, scroll through to Dolly Parton, click ‘jukebox’, and get your own back! All in all, it’s a free app, that gives you control of the music in some of your favourite (and not so favourite) hangouts, it lets you know what’s playing nearby, if people ‘check in’ you can see if there’s anyone you know (or you’re stalking) in venues nearby, it’s fun, and easy to use, and for at least 5 songs a day you ARE a DJ.

World Wacky Web Dragon Quest heading west After a long silence, venerable Japanese RPG series Dragon Quest is finally making a return to Western shores in 2015. Dragon Quest Heroes, an actionpacked spin-off in the vein of Dynasty Warriors, will debut exclusively for PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe via publisher Square Enix. An exact release date has not been set yet, but we do know it’s sometime this year and that it will be available in both physical and digital download formats. The game is due to release in Japan tomorrow along with a Japan-exclusive PlayStation 3 version. Square Enix community manager Dan Seto writes in a blog post: “In Dragon Quest Heroes, the protagonists must rise up against insurmountable odds, challenging swarms of enemies and conquering gigantic monsters in an exhilarating action game. Filled with

Gaming characters and monsters designed by world-renowned artist Akira Toriyama, Dragon Quest Heroes is brought to PS4 in beautiful HD.” In addition to Toriyama, Yuji Horii, the general director and creator of Dragon Quest, and Koichi Sugiyama, the composer who made music for the series since its first installment, ω-Force (Omega Force) from Koei Tecmo, is involved in the development of Dragon Quest Heroes. Omega Force is most famous for the Dynasty Warriors series of games including the recent Hyrule Warriors, a spinoff of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda franchise. “Dragon Quest Heroes is a game that Dragon Quest fans and gamers with all kinds of interests will enjoy,” Seto said. The announcement of Dragon Quest Heroes is a pretty big deal considering the West has missed out on every major Dragon Quest release for the last five years. Not counting the recent iOS and Android remakes of Dragon Quest IV, Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest VIII. Source: Tech Times

Warriors forward suspended after head-butt

“People are entitled to air their views but I hope that all parties will agree that violence and intimidation are unacceptable," said Sandy Easdale, after police were called in to investigate a number of death threats. James Easdale was one of four men facing a shareholder vote of no confidence at the March 6 EGM called by former directors Dave King and Paul Murray, allied with former Tennent Caledonian Breweries managing director John Gilligan.

GLASGOW WARRIORS forward Leone Nakarawa has been banned for 3 weeks after being found guilty of striking with the head during Glasgow Warriors’ win over the Ospreys.

But his decision to desert his plc board post early has been taken as a sign by Ibrox fans that the current power bloc is close to crumbling. King maintains he already has the verbal backing of more than 50 per cent of shareholders and will win the EGM vote. Supporters Trust spokesman Chris Graham said: “It’s good that the Easdale brothers have finally given the support something to celebrate. “We’ve wanted a removal of all the board members. We’re pleased that James Easdale has gone but there is still a job to be done.“There’s another three directors on the plc board and his brother still sits on the football board. We need to focus on removing the rest of the board.”

Fans believe the only way for the club to survive is for the current board to leave and for King, Murray and Rangers FC Trust member Gilligan to take over. There would still be restrictive retail contracts in place with Sports Direct founder Mike Ashley, who is showing no signs of ripping up any of the deals which are watertight and strengthened through him loaning money to the club on a regular basis. However, King is adamant that will not be a hindrance to his plans for the club. Retail contracts aside, as part of the terms of the most recent loan that Ashley provided Rangers with, he is entitled to place two more representatives on the board, and this could be Ashley’s ace up his sleeve ahead of the EGM

The Fijian lock was cited following an incident at a scrum where he headbutted Ospreys hooker Sott Baldwin in the second half of their Guinness PRO12 win over the Welsh region on Saturday. The Disciplinary Committee…having listened to representations by and on behalf of the player, viewed TV footage of the incident and reviewed various reports, found that Leone Nakarawa had committed an act of foul play worthy of a red card. Despite reviewing the incident at the time, referee George Clancy and Scottish TMO Jim Yuille could see nothing clear and obvious, with a penalty awarded to the Ospreys, but the player was found guilty at a PRO12 disciplinary hearing chaired by Pat Barriscale. In a statement released by the tournament organisers, the

committee determined that the offence should have warranted a red card with a sanction entry-point of four weeks. “The Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Pat Barriscale, along with Philip Orr and Mark McParland (all from Ireland), having listened to representations by and on behalf of the player, viewed TV footage of the incident and reviewed various reports, found that Leone Nakarawa had committed an act of foul play worthy of a red card and considered it to be at the low end of World Rugby’s sanctions for this type of offence, which carries an entry-point of four weeks,” said the statement. Nakarawa is suspended from playing until midnight on Sunday 29 March 2015 and has the right of appeal.

UEFA fine Celtic Fun Night Friday It’s the “Fun Night Out” for all the family. This show has become a firm favourite with family audiences.

Saucy Saturdays

There had been fears the sanction could have been more severe due to the governing body’s policy on recidivism. UEFA’s policy is such that if disciplinary measures have to be imposed for offences of a similar nature within a fiveyear period, that is seen as an aggravating circumstance and increases the likelihood of a great punishment.

European football’s governing body held disciplinary proceedings against the Scottish champions last Thursday following allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” by travelling fans at the game in Croatia in December. The punishment marks the sixth time in just over three years UEFA have taken action against Celtic.

It’s ‘Sensational Saucy Fun’ all done in the best possible taste. Well maybe!

It’s the famous ‘Madness at Midnight’ show where anything goes!

Celtic have been fined €10,000 (£7,330) by UEFA following crowd disturbances at their Europa League match with Dinamo Zagreb last year.

A club spokesperson said: “Clearly everyone is extremely disappointed that the behaviour of only a handful of people and in particular the use of flares, have led to a further fine from UEFA. “We have repeatedly called for the use of flares to stop. We cannot and will not allow the safety of our supporters or the reputation of our great club to be compromised by the actions of a tiny minority. “It is time those responsible understand the damage this does to the club they claim to support.”

Compliance Officer appeals Steve Simonsen sanction The Scottish FA can confirm that the Compliance Officer has appealed against the sanction imposed on Steve Simonsen (Rangers FC) at a disciplinary hearing on February 12, 2015 An Appellate Tribunal will convene in due course to consider the appeal, which the Compliance Officer has stated under paragraph 14.3 of the Judicial Panel Protocol, on the basis that the sanction imposed was unduly lenient. Simonsen was found guilty of breaching the following SFA disciplinary rules :1) Disciplinary Rule 33 (Season 2013/14) that between 15th January 2014 and 22nd June 2014, both dates inclusive, he bet on 13 football matches. 2) Disciplinary Rule 31 (Season 2014/15): In that between 6th September 2014 and 13th January 2015, both dates inclusive, he bet on 37 matches.

Clan to be presented with Gardener conference Trophy After Last week’s Gardiner conference title success the Clan return to Braehead Arena to face Elite League rivals, the Nottingham Panthers. Clan coach Ryan Finnerty insists this latest success is a platform to build on after a result which was better than the performance. He said: “It’s nice and, obviously, it’s a trophy we let slip last year, so it was on our agenda this season and I’m pleased we have it in the bag. Following the match against Nottingham Panthers, you will be able to stay and see the 2014/15 Gardiner Conference trophy presentation. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster, by calling 0844 499 1700 or directly from the Braehead Arena Box Office.

FOOTBALL FIXTURES SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP SAT 28 FEB 2015

On Saturday for the Premiership, Partick Thistle travel to Tannadice to take on the team who drew with the Caley Jags last weekend. Dundee United haven’t won in three games and are still trying to find their footing after losing two of their biggest stars in the January transfer window. Motherwell last weekend slipped to the foot of the table and face a difficult tie against third-placed Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Fir Park, while fellow Highlanders Ross County look to push themselves out of the relegation battle with a home game against Dundee, who find themselves on an eight-game unbeaten run. Perth is the destination if you’re looking for a mid-table scrap, with Kilmarnock visiting St Johnstone, and Hamilton Accies travel to Paisley following last week’s hammering at the hands of the hoops. On Sunday, Celtic vs Aberdeen is Sky Sports’ lunchtime kick off. With Celtic 3 points ahead of the Dons in the league and a game in hand, a win at Celtic Park would really give motivation to McInnes’ men in the title race. Will Celtic be suffering a European hangover as they return from playing Inter in the Europa League?

It’s usually around this time of year certain seasonal things are discussed in Scottish football, and 2015 is no different. It’s perhaps because we perch ourselves on plastic seats for 90 minutes in concrete arenas in the wintry cold we all get the urge to talk about summer football coming to Scotland. And usually yes, the experience of taking in a match in this climate does force those thoughts to the front of our minds. This year though we can blame Qatar 2022’s possible move to winter for accelerating the topic being raised quicker than you can say “winter break” while clutching your steaminghot Bovril, trying to retain the feeling in your fingers. While it would immediately the shortterm problem we face in 2022, it does bring a few of its own issues – differing transfer windows from neighbouring nations, annual clashes with international tournaments and of course direct TV competition other

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was under the spotlight again this week after a FIFA Task Force (which itself sounds like some sort of rubbish football/cop crossover show) came to the conclusion that playing in average temperatures of 40C wasn’t really possible as it posed a health risk, so they recommend it be played in November & December instead. What happened to the “artificial cloud”, essentially an aircraft which hovered over the 12 newly-built or refurbished state-of-the-art stadiums complete with air conditioned pitches and “carbon neutral” buildings? Scotland qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar would cost the SFA a fortune purely when tallying up the cost of buying and shipping Gordon Strachan’s factor-ginger sun block. And that’s before the Tartan Army learn that the country is as dry as Andy Murray’s sense of humour; though drinking will be possible in fan zones and in hotels, it’s unlikely we’ll see a row of true Scotsmen baring their

major events such as Wimbledon, the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. It does offer the benefit of being on TV when other leagues aren’t though, across the UK and further afield. We’d have less games called off, better quality of pitches to play on and the fans wouldn’t be getting frostbite in Ferguslie Park. Could summer football reignite interest in our stagnating game, and win over new generations of fans across Scotland and indeed the world? Or is the notion of having no football to watch while the rest of the continent are cheering their teams as welcome as Stan Collymore at the Louden Bar?

backsides and filling the fountains with Fairy liquid. In all seriousness though, the 2022 World Cup has been wrong from the very start. It in itself has become microcosm of FIFA corruption culture where a country with a population less than half that of our own being awarded the planet’s biggest sporting tournament, then being mired in controversy since. With a more than questionable policy on hiring migrant workers earning pennies to build the new facilities and a death toll of exceeding 1,000 among them so far, more serious questions must

Easy come, Easdale go

Conor Gildea Billionaire Mike Ashley has installed a range of ‘trusted advisors’ on the board of Rangers over the past three months in order to tighten his stranglehold on the Ibrox Club, But in a shock statement to the Stock Exchange this week, one of ‘Ashley’s men’, James Easdale tendered his resignation, with immediate effect.

A club statement confirmed that Easdale, who owns McGill's bus services company, resigned from the board at Rangers with immediate effect. "He leaves Rangers having never received any remuneration, bonus or compromise payment during his time at the Club," said Rangers. "He would like to thank all the fans and shareholders who supported him and wishes the club a speedy return to the top flight of Scottish

football and beyond." Easdale made his own statement, claiming he had ‘no desire’ to stay on with the fans against him: “After what the fans have been through with previous owners and managements it is hardly surprising they are heartily sick of the whole affair and they now seek another way forward. “I drew great comfort from the shareholder votes in my favour at the AGM on December 22 –

almost 90 per cent – however, it was clear that this cut little ice with the fans who attended Ibrox that day. “I feel that to remain on the board even after securing shareholder backing would be a hollow victory for me without the fans’ support to help the club go forward. “To help achieve that objective, it is in the best interests of the club that I step aside and resign from the board.”

The shock announcement came just a day after the Rangers Supporters Trust purchased another 450,000 in the cashtroubled club. Sandy Easdale, brother of James and who is also on the Rangers’ board and has a 20% stake in the group, revealed in January this year that the club’s current board was “subjected to an unprecedented level of abuse.” CONT PAGE 30
