Public outrage as tragic bin lorry driver named Ross Swanson Members of the public took to social media this week to condemn the decision made by many newspapers in naming the Glasgow City Council employee who crashed a lorry after collapsing at the wheel, killing six people. The man, who out of respect we will not join in with naming, was first named by The Herald on Saturday, in a story where they also revealed he was an experienced heavy goods vehicle driver. The Sunday Mail, Telegraph and Daily Mail also named him on Sunday.

importance re-emphasised
after Glasgow's 'screen stars’ are honoured Ross Swanson & Melissa Clark
There was a renewed call this week for women over 50 to attend potentially lifesaving breast screening appointments, following a Hollywood-esc 'Walk of Fame' showcase honouring four of Glasgow's biggest 'screen stars'. The attraction, usually associated with the Hollywood A-list elite, was set up in the city's St Enoch Shopping Centre last week to recognise four women who have worked to highlight the importance of breast screening in Glasgow. The women, who regularly attend the check-up appointments, were there in support of the Detect Cancer Early campaign, hoping to drive home the message that breast cancer checks can save lives.
The printing of the bin lorry driver’s name by the media was this week branded “utterly despicable”.
Having each lent their names to a personalised star, the women say they hope to encourage others to find out more about breast screening, and for eligible women to ensure they make anbappointment.

Statistically, one in nine women in Scotland will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and because breast screening can detect tiny cancers that often can’t be seen or felt, when they are at an earlier stage and easier to treat, it’s estimated that it saves around 130 lives in Scotland every year.
Dr Hilary Dobson, Clinical Director of West of Scotland Breast Screening Service, said: “Women are five times more likely to survive breast cancer if it is diagnosed and treated at the earliest stage.

Zombies shuffle away from Glasgow as funding not given Ross Swanson
Glasgow-based based film producers Black Camel Pictures were left disappointed after a lack of funding cost them the opportunity to bring flesh-eating zombies back to the city for their next blockbuster movie, they announced this week. The company, who also produced The Proclaimers musical Sunshine on Leith – released last year, had proposed shooting scenes for their horror epic, Generation Z, in George Square - famously the site of 2013’s zombie scare-fest World War Z, which starred Brad Pitt. However, they say that
government agency, Creative Scotland, could only offer them half of the £500K needed to make the film, forcing the company to shift production to Wales. Black Camel Co-founder Arabella Page Croft said : “My company was publicly unsupported by its national agency responsible for film and we ended up humiliated in our dealmaking with a seriously reduced position. “We lost a pan-European co-production opportunity, ownership stakes in the film, national spend, local employment opportunities, skills and career development opportunities for cast
and crew, and important international relationships were bruised and a potentially wonderful marketing opportunity for Scotland was lost.
project offers in terms of the creative and professional development of Scottishbased talent and the economic benefit of the project.
“Furthermore, our company lost its much-needed production fee.
“It is our understanding that a decision was taken by the producers to move the project to Wales as a result of a change to the finance plan – not as a direct result of Creative Scotland’s offer of funding.”
“We simply can’t have this happening here any longer. Producers need to trust their agency to deliver when trying to bring in films for co-productions.” A spokeswoman for Creative Scotland responded, saying: “All of our decisions are taken based on a balance of what a
Directed by Steve Barker and written by Paul Gerstenberger, the film will be set after an apocalyptic zombie outbreak at a time when humanity finally has the upper hand. Starring
Mission Impossible 2’s Dougray Scott as a lead who meets his companions at a safari-like resort to kill the undead for ‘sport in a controlled environment’, before zombie rights activists throw a wrench in the system and threaten all of mankind. Sounds interesting doesn’t it? Sections of Brad Pitt’s World War Z were filmed in Glasgow’s iconic George Square in 2011, where thousands of local extras were given the chance to appear on the sliver screen.
Primary teacher dies after sledging accident Ross Swanson
A young teacher has died in hospital after a sledging accident in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park at the weekend.
P1 and P2 pupils at Lanark Primary School, had recently got engaged and was set to get married to her long-term boyfriend.
The woman, named locally as primary school teacher Maryam Najafian, passed away late on Monday 19 January after fighting for life following the incident on Sunday afternoon.
Lanark Primary Head Teacher Margaret Scott described the young teacher as a “shining light” at the school.
The 25-year-old, from East Kilbride was taken from the park to nearby Western Infirmary. She was soon transferred to the Southern General Hospital but died from serious head injuries sustained in the accident. Ms Najafian, who taught
She said: “We are devastated with her loss and will miss her deeply in our school and in our lives. “She was known and loved by all here as she involved herself so much in the whole life of the school. “More than anything, Maryam was a dedicated teacher who did

everything she could for the benefit of the children in her care. “Each and every child she met was special to her and she has left them with everlasting memories of her wonderful teaching. Maryam was a young woman whose energy and love of life radiated from her. “During her few short years of teaching, Maryam became firm friends with many of her colleagues. “She was a highly respected teacher here in Lanark and in her previous post at David Livingstone Memorial Primary.”
A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal and there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances. The incident happened shortly after a nine-yearold child was airlifted to hospital after being injured in a separate
sledging accident near Aitkenhead Farm near Fenwick, East Ayrshire. An ambulance crew arrived at the scene and requested a helicopter to take the child to hospital shortly before 3pm on Sunday

Police crack down on car crime

@Glasgow__News
Ross Swanson
Police Scotland this week launched a national campaign which looks to tackle car crime and vehicle theft across the country. Operation Quarterlight will be implemented throughout Scotland to identify and target those responsible for vehicle break-ins and thefts. Police say that more than 70 vehicles across Scotland have been stolen, with a further 230 broken into, each week since November 2014. The campaign aims to focus on the prevention of vehicle crime by engaging with partners, key stakeholders and members of the public. By changing habits, and working in partnership, Officers say that vehicle crime can be prevented.Assistant Chief Constable Campbell Thomson said:
“Police Scotland are committed to Keeping People Safe. Local Policing is at the heart of all we do and officers right across Scotland will be targeting criminals who commit car-crime. “Operation Quarterlight is about preventing vehicle crime, and targeting those responsible. I would say this directly to those intent on committing vehicle crime in Scotland – if you engage in such activity, we will use every resource at our disposal to trace you, arrest you and bring you to justice.” Chief Superintendent Mark Williams, Edinburgh Divisional Commander stated that car crime was a “blight on local communities”, and added that police “wont tolerate it”. He added: “I would appeal to the public to work with us. Don’t make your car a target for crime; remove all your valuables and
don’t leave them in sight; always secure your vehicle, never leave it unattended or with the keys still in the ignition. "Don’t leave your keys anywhere they can be easily stolen – leaving them by a house door or hallway is a gift to criminals. Take some simple steps to change your habits and together we can better prevent crime.”
often focus their activity around the theft of high value vehicles often involving housebreakings. "It is crucial that all intelligence in relation to perpetrators of vehicle crime is submitted onto the Scottish Intelligence database in order that we can build up a better intelligence picture throughout Scotland."
Police Scotland ran a similar campaign in Aberdeen last month, which Chief Inspector Richard Craig called a “success” after a string of arrests were made in the area.
Detective Superintendent Yvonne Scott, deputy for Operation Quarterlight added: “Vehicle crime is not a new phenomenon, the community has for years experienced this type of crime. It is important as police officers that we continue to recognise the impact it has on people’s perception and fear of crime. "It is also important to recognise that Organised Crime Groups

Fire Service warn of domestic dangers
sure they have working smoke alarms so they would get early warning if the worst does happen.

“Our crews are available to help anyone who could benefit from some advice and support to keep their homes fire safe.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said this week that it was necessary to reiterate the importance of fire safety in the home, adding that most domestic fire hazards can be “easily addressed”. Station Manager Archie Curran, the commanding officer of Calton Community Fire Station, said: “Most people think a fire won’t happen to them but we know it can happen to anyone. “Overloading electrical sockets, placing candles near to items that could easily ignite, leaving devices like straighteners unattended and leaving chargers on are all clear fire hazards that can be very easily addressed.
“We also want people to put any friends, relatives or neighbours in touch with us if they think the person may be at increased risk.” Crews responded to a 999 emergency call in Glasgow's East End on Tuesday 20 January. A woman was treated for the effects of breathing in smoke, but was said to be fine after a precautionary check up as Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The fire, which happened at a semidetached property in Marfield Street shortly after 2:10am on Tuesday, was extinguished by firefighters within the hour.

Police seize £470,000 of drugs in Cumbernauld raid Ross Swanson
Police have seized a haul of drugs with a street value of nearly half a million pounds from a house in North Lanarkshire, they have announced this week. Police Scotland said that officers seized a haul of heroin and cocaine worth £470,000, acting under warrant, during an intelligence-led operation. The drugs were recovered from a house in Cairngorm Gardens, Cumbernauld, around midday on January 13. No arrests were made and police said inquiries following the raid were ongoing. Detective Inspector Kevin Jamieson of Lanarkshire CID said: “This is a significant find and its seizure will certainly have an impact on those involved in their distribution. “Officers are currently carrying out enquiries in to the find and I would appeal to anyone with information about the drugs or the premises in which they were found to contact police.”
The SSE Hydro announced as 2nd busiest entertainment area in the world Drake Wisemill Glasgow's premier music venue, the SSE Hydro, is now officially the world’s second busiest live entertainment arena, according to industry rankings published this week. The news is a phenomenal achievement for Scotland’s home of live entertainment, which first opened its doors in 2013, as it's attendances were benchmarked against a every other major, global venue to claim second place - and only beaten to the top spot by London’s world-famous O2 Arena. Peter Duthie, Chief Executive of The SSE Hydro and SECC said:
“It has been an incredible journey for The SSE Hydro. To be positioned as the second busiest arena globally just fifteen months after opening is absolutely outstanding. We wouldn’t have received this accolade without the support of the artists, their promoters, our staff and of course the 1,045,344 fans that visited us last year. “Looking ahead we won’t be slowing down with over 90 performances already confirmed for 2015. The SSE Hydro is truly a world-class events venue with a world-class reputation”. The “Top 100 Worldwide Arena Venues” list is compiled quarterly by the leading entertainment industry publication Pollstar, based on arena attendance for concerts and special events.
New St Enoch station entrance opens in city centre Ross Swanson
The first of two glass canopy entrances to Glasgow’s St Enoch station has opened this week, as part of a huge subway refurbishment. St Enoch is one of seven subway stations around the city that architectural practice AHR have been commissioned to modernise by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). The striking dome entrance's design was inspired by the Kibble Palace in Glasgow's BotanicGardens.
The completed entrance, on Argyle Street, will be twinned with a second entrance on St Enoch Square, facing Howard Street. Work has already began on the second canopy, which is expected to open in March. SPT also announced this week that work will begin on the modernisation of the West End's Kelvinbirdge Station.
The work will take place within the station’s lower concourse level. Temporary walls and flooring will remain in place until winter 2015, before it receives a full scale refurbishment similar to Hillhead, Kelvinhall, Partick and Ibrox stations have in recent years.

Prince Andrew asked to swear under oath Lawyers representing a US woman who claims she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew when she was 17 - illegal in the State of Florida at the time - have written to Buckingham Palace asking the Prince to respond to the accusations under oath. Prince Andrew has repeatedly denied having sex with the woman, known only as Jane Doe No 3, but named elsewhere as Virginia Roberts. She claims she was forced to be a “sex slave” for Andrew’s friend, the billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein, who later went to prison for soliciting sex with an underage girl.
Corrie Star Deirdre passes away Ross Swanson Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride, who played the character Deirdre Barlow in the longrunning television soap, has died aged 60 after a short battle with cancer. ITV announced that the actress, who was in the show for 42 years, passed away peacefully in a Manchester hospital on Monday evening. In an interview with This Morning, her long standing on-screen husband Bill Roach said: “I loved her dearly and she loved me, in the true and proper way and I respected her as an actress tremendously. “There's a great sense of personal loss, and I can understand the public feeling that, because Annie radiated such love they also will feel a great sense of personal loss. We've also lost an iconic Coronation Street character so it's a double loss for us.” The actor, who played Deirdre's husband Ken, added that she was always “full of love” and that she would be “sadly missed by everyone”. Anne was expected to return to show from hiatus this month but was forced to extend her leave as she quickly became more unwell. Her “heartbroken” husband said that few people knew how severely ill she was before she passed away.
The letter, dated 14th January and filed with a Florida court on Wednesday, states: “This letter is a formal request ... to interview you, under oath, regarding interactions that you had with Jane Doe No 3 beginning in approximately early 2001.” The letter includes a nownotorious photograph of Prince Andrew with his arm around the girl when she was 17. Referring to the photograph the letter goes on: “Among other things, I would like to discuss events that occurred at the time that the photograph below was taken - and shortly thereafter.” The letter asks Prince Andrew to reply by 19th January. However, the lawyers said the letter was
refused by the recipient and sent back. The lawyers denied the letter had been timed to coincide with a public appearance at the World Economic Forum at Davos on Thursday evening - his first since the allegations resurfaced. Aides at the palace say Andrew will publicly deny all the allegations in his speech. Although the denial will be brief, it will still set a precedent for a Royal Family member to comment on allegations of a sexual nature. Last week, Prince Andrew’s former wife Sarah Ferguson dismissed the allegations as “salacious lies” on American TV.
However, in her sworn affidavit Roberts says: “I have seen Buckingham Palace’s recent ‘emphatic’ denial that Prince Andrew had sexual contact with
me. That denial is false and hurtful to me. I did have sexual contact with him as I have described here – under oath. Given what he knows and has seen, I was hoping that he would simply voluntarily tell the truth about everything.”
“I did have sexual contact with him as I have described here – under oath”
The Palace continues to insist that “the allegations made are false and without any foundation.”

Rockness Festival gets cancelled Drake Wisemill Festivalgoers are likely to be upset with the news that the popular RockNess event has been cancelled for the second year in a row, organisers have confirmed this week. The festival, one of Scotland's biggest music shows, was due to be held at Dores on the shores of Loch Ness. The event was cancelled in 2014 after organisers blamed a clash with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Fifa World Cup in Brazil. Before 2014, the event had been held every June since 2006 at Dores, near Inverness, and attracted 30,000 fans.

ThinxBig Think Big! Popular English ‘plus size’ retailers ThinxBig recently opened their first store in Scotland and deciding Glasgow was the perfect place has proved to be a successful choice.
The Blackpool-based company supply extra large ‘bigman’ clothing such as large waist jeans and king-size T-Shirts (up to 8XL) for customers who struggle to find clothes that fit comfortably in most shops. The new store, in Glagow’s East end Tollcross area, launched late last year, and has
been a huge success since it opened its doors. Fashionable named brands on sale include: Life & Limb, FuBu, Ben Sherman, Rockford and many more.
ThinxBig also import specialised plus-sized clothing from the US, which is available in-store and on the company’s website (www.thinxbig.co.uk). The company’s spokesman, Jim Ali, said: “We decided to open in Glasgow around a year ago. Having had an enormous amount of feedback from our customers coming down to Blackpool, they told us there
were no shops like ours in Scotland. A lot of people said it was hard from them to buy online as other company’s would frequently let them down on quality, sizing & price. It became clear to us Scotland needed a shop like ours.”
“It will be our policy to employ local people,” he continued, “we hope to help revive this part of Tollcross and hopefully encourage other shops to open in the area. “Our current visitors from Scotland to our Blackpool store have been amazed at our
‘old fashioned’ style of friendly service, which we offer along with our up-to-date – and reasonably priced fashion. “We discovered a high percentage of our customers were either disabled or had other medical problems, and we try to help how we can. Sometimes it’s more like a social meeting place than a shop. We always try to make every one as comfortable as possible. “I hope we will bring our type of humour and knowledge of plus-sized men’s fashion to Scotland. It’s important to us
that our customers look upon us as friends – not a money grabbing corporate company.” ThinxBig say they hope to open more stores across Scotland in the future, and will also be launching a loyalty card where points can be redeemed for discounts on purchases. Card holders will also be offered exclusive deals on some items, well below retail price.

Unless you have been living on the planet Krypton the past 2 years, you can’t help but have been caught up in the Disney sensation that is Frozen. Mum’s and Dad’s around the world know the words to “Let it go”, and the majority could probably recite it backwards.
you been told before there was a resemblance?
like best friends. I could never separate myself from her.
Anna - My sister Lexie was the first person to tell me that I looked like the character in a Disney movie that was coming out. I went to see the movie with my Mom and sister and it was so weird watching it because we could all see that I looked so much like Elsa. Lexie - I was the one that told her she looked like Elsa.
Lexie - We are very close. I tell people all the time that if Anna and I weren't sisters, we would still be best friends. It made me sad that they couldn't play together. What has been the highlight so far, since taking on the real life roles of Elsa and Anna?
Little girls all over the globe now have a new Princess and Queen to look up to. Step forward Princess Anna and Elsa the Snow Queen. We caught up with the real life Elsa and Anna, two sisters from Florida who bare an uncanny resemblance to the Frozen sisters to find out how they went from studying at school to entertaining children, and even Royalty, as their alter-egos ‘Elsa and Annie’. So for anyone who doesn't know, can you tell us how this fairy-tale all started? Anna - I had a modelling job in Orlando and when we were finished, we went to the mall. We walked by the cut out and my Mom told me to stand beside it so we could take a picture. I posted it just for fun on my Instagram account and the picture went viral! It was amazing. Lexie - Anna stood by the cut out with Elsa and she posted it on her Instagram and the picture went viral. Before you posted the original picture on Instagram, had
Anna - Making so many people happy, children and adults. They just get so excited! We have been able to travel when we go to hospitals and events. We have even been to Dubai and we are going to Singapore next week. Lexie - I love seeing the kids so happy. I was always more quiet. Now since we have been putting on the shows, it has helped me to be more outgoing and not so shy. Also, we have been able to travel to some really exciting places.
Had you seen Frozen before the photo went viral? Anna - Oh yes. We saw it as soon as the movie came out. Lexie - Yes, We all went together to see the movie. We love Disney movies! What is your favourite scene from the movie?
Has there been any downside to the fame? Anna - Well, I get a lot of people stealing pictures from my Facebook and Instagram accounts and making fake ones up. Lexie - We do get some negative comments, which isn’t nice at all, but I guess it comes with the territory.
does it feel when you see children's faces light up when you are in character? Anna It's very rewarding. It's also sad to see sick children, but I know that our visit makes them happy so I love making them smile. Lexie - Well, we’ve done about 14 charity events. It varies from month to month, but we like helping whenever we can. We get a lot of requests from parents with sick children. What does your Mum think of the rise to fame? Anna - She loves every minute of it and goes to every event with us. She said she always knew I would be a performer since I was a toddler because I was always singing and trying to get people's attention. Lexie - It makes her really happy for us. She loves that we are making children so happy. It's a great thing to be known for. And what does the future hold for you both now?
You visit a lot of hospitals, how
Anna - When Elsa sings "Let it Go" and builds her Ice Castle. Lexie - When Elsa builds her Ice Palace and sings "Let it Go." The Sister bond in Frozen is very close, are you both as close as Elsa and Anna? Anna - Honestly, I think that Lexie and I are much closer. We have always been very close, more

Last year the Scottish Finance minister announced the Land and Business Transaction Tax (LBTT), a new property tax system for house buyers in Scotland, due to take effect on the 1st of April. The new proposals were seen as an attempt to level the playing field for house buyers deemed to be faced with unfairly high purchasing costs, particularly in more expensive areas such as Edinburgh. However the original LBTT proposal came several months before UK Chancellor George Osborne, in early December, announced that a new gradu-
Finance Minister, John Swinney, forced in to property taxes rethink. ated system of Stamp Duty was to be introduced in the UK. According to Osborne, the new system would work in a way similar to that of income tax, the previous system having been criticised for its severe increases once certain house price thresholds had been exceeded. Now, Scottish Tories are calling on Minister Swinney to scrap the LBTT and replicate the reforms introduced by Chancellor Osborne. Reacting to these calls, minister Swinney claimed that the
new Stamp Duty system was designed for London house prices rather than for house prices in Scotland, Minister Swinney also criticised the Chancellor for not consulting him before announcing the Stamp Duty reforms. Furthermore, in spite the protests of the Tories, the minister did not want to seem like he was back tracking on his original plans. “The Chancellor's decision to introduce a new stamp duty system overnight, without warning and consultation, means that while 80% of home owners continue to pay less tax or no tax at all
under the Scottish system we now have the opportunity to review the rates and ensure they are right for Scotland’ The LBTT was initially planned to raise the threshold for paying tax on a home from £125,000 under stamp duty to £135,000, with rates ranging from 2% up to 12% on the portion of any price above £1m. However as Minister Swinney pointed out, his original intention of implementing a property tax system in Scotland that was to be “revenue neutral” will now have to be
reviewed in light of recent developments“The consequence of the Chancellor's announcement in December is the amount of tax that he intends to raise has reduced quite significantly. So, if I want to remain true to my principle of this change being revenue neutral - that it doesn't increase or lower the taxes that are generated - then the right thing to do is to look at these issues.” iNVEZZ

The attraction between them is immediate, and Jane more than holds her own against his fierce intellect. But then he’s given a devastating diagnosis of motor neurone disease and told he has just two years to live. Jane draws on her inner strength to stand by the man she loves as they face the future together. Oscarwinning ‘Man on Wire’ director James Marsh has a flair for telling incredible true stories. Adapted from Jane Hawking’s memoir, this is a deeply moving, nuanced drama that doesn’t shy away from the Hawkings’ marital difficulties. It also benefits from a revelatory performance by Eddie Redmayne.

It’s a nerveshredding task, requiring him to make splitsecond distinctions between civilians and enemy combatants. Such is Chris’s skill and pinpoint accuracy that he saves countless lives and earns the nickname ‘Legend’. But this also means that insurgents soon put a price on his head. Legendary director Clint Eastwood returns to the battlefield for the first time since ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ and ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’. His tense and harrowing film boasts a superlative performance from a bulked-up Bradley Cooper and doesn’t shy away from exploring the terrible psychological aftermath of war.

THE SCULLERY 10
clairemont st, glasgow tel: 2216200
The decor at The Scullery is über cool laid back chic – exposed brick walls, nice seating and comfy chairs, cool mirrors and lighting, and loads of gorgeous natural light – basically it’s everything you want from a contemporary local hot spot in finnieston. I was also pleasantly surprised at how busy it was, as the day I visited was only their 3rd lunch service. The service was fantastic, it felt slicker and more polished in the 7 days since my last visit. The girl who served us was lovely and chatty which I love. From their lunch menu I decided to try the Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Dill Pickle, Mustard and Mayo Sandwich with a side order of Scullery fries. I can only use 1 word to describe the sandwich – sensational! Now I know you may think that is a bit over the top for a sandwich, but I say don’t underestimate how amazing a great sandwich can be, and this was a GREAT sandwich. The bread was light and fresh, the fillings were generous and flavoursome and it was seasoned to perfection. This was a sensational sandwich! In my original post I commented that the hand cut skinny fries ‘looked slightly peely wally and soft’ not today tho they were larger, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside….I mentioned this to them and they told us they were having a bit of a chip-off at the moment, I made it very clear that however they did them that day was a definite winner. I couldn’t possibly leave without trying the Vegan Choc Orange Brownie again – just to make sure I was right in my initial assessment you understand :-) You’ll be pleased to hear it was just as delicious second time round and I stand by my original write-up describing it as dense, gooey, thick, warm and perfect!! With my brownie I also tried the Hot Chocolate again, I mentioned in my original post that I hated the Hot Chocolate. The manager assured me she had done a wee investigation and the mistake was spotted and rectified.
Twitter: @Glasgowfoodgeek I had no option but to try it out again and I can confirm that it was amazing. Creamy, rich and luxuriously delicious – everything you want really from a lush hot choccy. A lovely lunch and after my second visit I am even more sure that the Scullery is going to be one of my firm favourites.

Celebrity Horoscopes This week’s guest phsycic - Arnold Schwarznegger* Aries - Memories of past events that caused traumas that you're still dealing
with could come to light today. This is a positive development, as the release of these old emotions could make it possible for you to progress more quickly on material and spiritual planes. You'll begin to feel better once you hit the gym and start working on your bi's
Taurus - Today you might see old and new friendships and romantic involvements reach a new understanding, Taurus. This creates a stronger commitment between you and those who care for you. Also, hit the gym, you're too puny buddy. Gemini - An important project could require intense concentration today, Gemini, and you're in the right frame of mind. You could be pleased with the results and so could others whose opinions matter. Expect public acknowledgement of some kind. A boost to your self-confidence is in the works, perhaps even a raise in income. Try a set of inverted dips in the gym followed by a tanning and posing session, that ought to do it. Cancer - Your practical skills should be operating efficiently, Cancer. A
creative or intellectual discipline that fascinates you might require some intense concentration today. And by creative or intellectual, I of course mean physical. Get to it tubby! It's simple, if it jiggles, it's fat.
Leo - The last three or four reps is what makes the muscle grow. This area of pain divides the champion from someone else who is not a champion. That's what most people lack, having the guts to go on and just say they'll go through the pain no matter what happens. Virgo - Matters involving your community might require your attention. This is likely to involve communication in some way. Perhaps you want to make some phone calls, write letters, or place an ad or article in a local newspaper. Just like in bodybuilding, failure is also a necessary experience for growth in our own lives, for if we're never tested to our limits, how will we know how strong we really are? How will we ever grow? Libra - Financial matters might need attention today. Stop whining and
get on with it! If it can bleed, we can kill it. If however, it doesn't I'd suggest contacting your accountant. Love comes to those who hit 10,000 push-ups.
Scorpio – Rest, let your body relax and grow. Work up gradually and don't
blow it. Sometimes you can do so much your mind gets sick of it. Keep your mind hungry. People have a tendency to overdo things at first and then sluff off – Ha, just kidding, now give me a two hundred reps on that barbell before I snap your pencil neck.
Sagittarius - You've got to listen to me! You need to spend a minimum of
16 hours in the gym each day to achieve any sort of basic psychical well-being. So what are you waiting for? Get out! Hit the gym....NOW
Capricorn – I TOLD YOU TO HIT THE GYM YOU SUNOFAB*TCH! Aquarius – CAM 'OAN!...DO IT!....DO IT NOW!...WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!
Pisces – GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Health and Beauty with Joan Robertson Your Best Skin Ever in 2015 starts here…. Winter in Glasgow means red cheeks, red nose and chin, dry skin, tired and dull looking and dare I say ‘older looking skin’. Argghh! I could go on with the complaints skin suffers during January however I am here to tell you how to start this year looking after your skin to combat all that January brings with it! First of all skin is getting shocked constantly going from a warm centrally heated house to outside cold wind and rain. These extremes of temperature cause the blood vessels to dilate and contract which if our skin isn’t protected properly causes broken capillaries on our faces and makes our cheeks, nose and chin become red and sensitive. Simple to understand the cause and should give you a clue how to ‘fix’ the problem. Protection! Use a good moisturiser stronger than what you use during summer/autumn to protect against
the cold weather. When applying moisturiser don’t forget to put it on your neck as well as your face. Good idea is to apply it then go back to mirror 15 minutes later and see if your skin feels tight anywhere then apply more. Also skin goes into hibernation in winter months so dead skin cells build up causing skin to look dull, tired and older looking and lets face it who wants that?! So how do you get skin looking smoother, fresher and younger? Exfoliate! Use a gentle skin scrub and this means a non-scratchy one that you use with gentle pressure. Best to exfoliate in the evening prior to bedtime and then apply moisturiser.
One reason for nighttime is that you don’t want to exfoliate your skin in the morning then go outside. Okay so now you have two secrets to great skin – Exfoliate and Protect!
www.jlformulations.com Twitter - @JLFormulations Facebook - JLFormulations
Beauty Products A good skin scrub should leave the skin feeling smoother, clearer and younger looking. It helps slough off dead skin cells which helps the skin renewal system to work better and when used a couple of times a week your skin should start to look much fresher. Sounds good?! Natural Spa Skin Scrub is a daily cleanser for the guys who love the way their skin feels after using it. Us girls can use it too as a daily cleanser if you have oily skin however for most of us girls it is best used twice a week. I love the smell of this scrub which contains honey and vanilla and the main thing is that this product simply cleanses skin a bit deeper allowing your moisturiser to absorb better into skin. So this is your exfoliating skin care product! Winter moisturiser should protect the skin against cold, wind and rain and this is what you get when you use Perfect Skin Essential Moisture. A few drops of this extraordinary oil and voila you shall feel lovely hydrated silky skin. This moisturiser contains natural plant lipids which absorb easily into your skin to form a protective barrier. This is a fab oil for those of you who are the ‘outdoors types’ like the walkers, joggers or those of you who are braving the golf course! A good tip is to remember to let moisturiser absorb into your skin for a good 5 minutes before applying make up.

TECHnology Shipwrecked pirates planning to set sail once again Infamous online torrent website The Pirate Bay is apparently set to come back after being forced offline by authorities last month. After going missing immediately following the Dec 9 raid on the site’s data
centre, the domain became active again earlier this week with an image showing visiters a waving skull and crossbones and a clock counting down to February 1. Curiously, there was also an AES string image at the bottom of the page which displayed an encrypted message.
Reddit user “dafky2000” cracked the complicated code, which led to a YouTube video compilation of Arnold Schwarzenegger saying his famous catchphrase “I’ll be back,” making their intentions to return amusingly clear. The Pirate Bay has been accused of repeatedly breaching copyright and intellectual rights since its launch in 2003.
Nintendo's newest handheld heading Ross Swanson to Europe Nintendo's newest handheld heading to Europe Nintendo have announced that the long awaited New 3DS is finally getting a UK release next month. The more powerful update, released back in November 2014 in Japan and Australia, will be able to run original 3DS/DS games along with a string of soon-to-come dedicated releases which will utilise its beefed up processor and new features. The console will launch alongside the highly anticipated Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask remake on February 13.
The company have come under criticism for deciding not to include an AC adapter – necessary for powering the device – along with the console. Instead, customers are told to either use an existing 3DS/ DS power supply or buy one directly from Nintendo. This isn't the first time Nintendo have irked fans with this policy either. Back in 2012, after releasing the previous iteration of the handheld in Japan without an AC adapter, 3DS project leader said Kazunori Koshiishi stated that the company thought it was “likely” that most users would already own
a Nintendo specific plug and that they didn't wish to “make you pay for something you don't need”. Well, you do need it though. It powers the console. It's a bit like buying a doughnut and finding out you need to go back out and buy the jam separately, because the baker assumed you'd already own your own jar of jam. Well, it's kind of like that. So if you're planning on picking one up, make sure you add the plug to your order, otherwise your fun will be cut short (at around two hours to be precise).
The site’s founders have all spent time in prison after being found guilty of assisting in copyright infringement in Sweden. The website remains hard to access within the UK after every major internet service provider were ordered by the high court to block the domain.
Users are able to visit the site via a proxy server only. Former rivals in ‘questionable’ torrents Isohunt (who were also forced to shut down by authorities in 2013) launched the oldpiratebay website, a mirror for the original Pirate Bay, just days after December’s raid in an apparent act of solidarity.
App of the Week –
Crossy Road
Crossy Road is basically a slick, graphically improved version 1981's incredibly popular arcade game Frogger - and despite sounding like something Russell Brand would say in a primary school's road safety instructional video, it's absolutely brilliant.
If you've ever played Konami's arcade classic then you'll be very familiar with the game's simple mechanics: manoeuvre your character from A to B while avoiding cars, streams, predators and other obstacles. Unlike Frogger though, the proverbial 'B' in the A to B is missing as the single level never ends. Taking it's cue from the likes of Flappy Bird, Crossy Road instead lets the player accumulate a top score by simply lasting as long as possible against the randomly generated scroll. It's this completely random element which makes the game both so difficult and addictive. There is no way to learn the level's layout as it is never the same twice. You might get lucky and just have to dodge a few cars and easily rack up a highscore, but you're just as likely to be met with a 'stream' the size of the Atlantic and find yourself sweating as you try and judge the best time to hop between the fast moving
logs. In absolute classic old school video game style (if you'll pardon the cliché), Crossy Road takes seconds to learn, and hours and hours (and hours) to master. This is exactly what a mobile game should be.You can kill 5 minutes whilst waiting for the train or spend an entire evening prodding away at your phone's screen trying to top your last run. The pickup-and-play gameplay is a welcome break from some of the more contrived modern mobile picks out there as an alternative. Its only major downfall came when my phone decided to 'notify me' (i.e. a loud bloody noise) at 3am that I apparently had some kind of free gift to redeem. I managed to escape a major hiding by telling my girlfriend – who had just jolted awake due to the alarm – that some idiot had texted me. I think if I'd told her it was a video game she'd have flat-out murdered me. Luckily, you can turn notifications off in the settings – I highly suggest you do. Simple, fun, beautiful, brilliant.

Hitman fined for NOT killing man as promised In 'surely that can't be right?' news this week, a professional killer was charged with fraud after failing to carry out a contract murder he had promised to commit. Norwegian police fined the unnamed man £850 after receiving several thousand pounds to carry out the 'hit', they say he had intention of fulfilling. Local media say that the extraordinary case came about after authorities received a complaint that a
21-year-old man had agreed to kill a 17-year-old youth for money. He was allegedly paid by another 21-year-old man who said he wanted the teenager dead, after having his romantic advances rejected. Police were able to wade in before any blood was shed, but were unable to prove the alleged hitman was going to commit the murder, and so could only charge him with fraud.
His 'client', who ordered the slaying, was sentenced to two years in prison. However most of his sentence was suspended due to his confession. So, the contract was legally binding? Did he actually make his client sign documents stating he would murder someone? It's hardly an invoice from Amazon now is it? I guess it'll remain a mystery. Wow. Just wow.

West of Scotland Media | 23th January - 5th Februray 2015 documentary ‘Insane Fightclub II’ earlier this week, has gone from hosting shows at Maryhill Community centre to selling out the world famous Barrowland Ballroom in just a few short years. “It’s getting huge,” he adds, “Dallas (ICW’s owner) was always saying to me ‘next we’re going to be in nightclubs, next we’ll be on TV, next we’ll be at the Barrowlands...’ and I always took it with a pinch of salt, but it always, always happened. His plans are obviously still ongoing, but I’ve learnedto stop doubting anything he says.” “It’s more than just a wrestling show,” he continues, “We’ve got people who come along who don’t know anything about wrestling, or who haven’t watched it since they were kids, but they just love the show.” “I’d say it’s easily one of the top five wrestling promotions in the world right now,” he adds. “I mean, I watch a load of wrestling and I look at some of the big American promotions and think ‘ICW completely dwarfs this in terms of crowd size, production and fan support.’ so it’s absolutely up there.”
The Wee Man Cometh Ross Swanson
Glasgow comedian Neil Bratchpiece shot to fame online in 2007 after appearing as cheeky ned ‘The Wee Man’ in the insanely popular comedy rap track Here You (That’ll Be Right). His starring role in the hilarious video has led to him becoming one of the most recognisable stand up’s in the city’s bustling comedy scene. However, he says that the popular character was almost abandoned years ago after receiving a confidence-knocking bad review following one of his early performances.
“I’d been doing stand up for a while at that point, just kinda opening spot level stuff though,” says the 30-year-old comic, “Then I was at the finals of Scottish Comedian of the Year (in 2006). I thought my set went alright but the critic from Chortle (comedy website) absolutely slated me, so I’d actually kinda given the character up,” he continued. “But then I was asked to be in that video and I thought it just sounded like a laugh and I said yes.” The video for Here You (That’ll Be Right) by NEDS Kru went viral and quickly gained The Wee Man fans all over Scotland (and as he says, from countries all over the world).
The catchy anthem has almost 3.5 million hits on YouTube. “When it came out and started to get all that attention I thought ‘yeah I should probably try and get some gigs now,’ so it kinda forced me back into the game.” Now an instantly recognisable face amongst comedy fans nationwide, The Wee Man found himself quickly climbing up the bill at shows over he next few months, until he found himself headlining the same bills he used to ‘jerk the curtain’ for as an opening act. However, the novelty of being known as Scotland’s most famous ned, and the song he was associated with, soon wore off.
The ever popular Wee Man character has had an even bigger resurgence in recent years after Neil became involved with Insane Championship Wrestling, managing fellow ned tag-team ‘The Bucky Boys’. The unprecedented following that ICW have obtained recently has brought the comedian to a new worldwide audience. “I came into it about four years ago now,” he says. “It was a natural fit for me because I’ve always loved wrestling and I already had the perfect character in The Wee Man. It just works.” ICW, which was spotlighted in the BBC1 Scotland
“ICW will at least be on WWE’s radar, without a doubt,” he states confidently. Neil explains that his role in the wrestling ring has breathed new life into his act, which he feared was beginning to get a little stale and onedimensional. “At that point I was only really doing the character for special occasions, charity events...or for a special amount of money,” he says laughing, “but ICW kinda keeps him alive.” The comedian is currently working on a show for the annual Glasgow Comedy Festival in March called The Wee Man: Work in Progress? Which will see him shed some elements of the ned

character, in favour of letting Neil Bratchpiece himself come out.
use it to start gigging, but it wasn’t like that at all, it was a complete accident.
“That character is still perfect for the wrestling shows, but in terms of doing stand up it kinda feels like I’m milking the original video a little bit. “I think most people assume that I made that video and then decided to
Now that I’m headlining shows, it just feels almost like I’m performing some sort of retro tour of it. “It’s frustrating because I’m headlining and I’m making good money, but I think I could be doing something different up there. “A lot of people have said that they’d rather see me perform as myself rather than The Wee Man, but it’s sometimes a little hard to step out of that character on stage.” Maybe it’s shyness,” he admits, “but a character gives you something to hide behind a little bit.” “There are things I say on stage to people that I’m sure The Wee Man wouldn’t give a
**** about, whereas Neil, does worry about things like that. “So the show at Yesbar (for the GCF) is me starting to step out of the character a little bit. Just baby steps for starters though.” Neil also currently hosts his own show at The Stand comedy club in Glasgow. His monthly ‘Comedian Rap Battle’ events have become some of the most highly regarded gigs in the Glasgow scene, drawing huge crowds of fans eager to see some of the country’s best comics fire barbs at one another. Their popularity have finally earned the comic some well deserved recognition from his critics. “I actually went on to do three more Scottish Comedian of the Year finals, and they (Chortle) kept slating me, but the rap battles got a few five star reviews, and I see
them as my five stars,” he says laughing. The comedian got a chance this past summer to work with fellow scally character comedian, TVs Lee Nelson. Rather than being rivals though, Neil says that ned and chav can live in harmony just fine. “I’m a fan, absolutely,” he says. “I supported him at T in the Park last year. He went out there and absolutely stormed it and smashed it like I’ve never seen anyone do. The crowd were so into it.” “I did feel a little humbled,” he admits, “ But I knew he was going to be brilliant. He’s been doing it for years and years, but people still say to me that he’s just taken my act and put it on TV, but it’s not like that at all.
29
He was working his way up to that level years before I even thought of The Wee Man.” “One of the first things I ever said when I first met him was ‘Alright mate? I’m The Wee Man, the poor man’s you,’” he says jokingly. “He was really nice though and told me I was a legend, so I was happy enough with that.” The Wee Man’s Comedian Rap Battle takes place at The Stand comedy club on Wednesday 4 February.
His Glasgow Comedy Festival show, The Wee Man: Work in Progress, takes place at Yesbar on March 26. You can also see The Wee Man this Sunday at ICW’s Square Go event at the O2 ABC.

Dye-ing to be like Dad! SUMMER RAIN RUTLER Christina Aguilera introduces Summer Rain Rutler to the world! The 34-year-old superstar shared the picture of her baby girl on Twitter with the caption "Watch out...another one's getting ready to conquer the world! #driven #diva2,", which shows little Summer facing away from the camera, complete with a "Lil Diva" diaper cover and hot pink dress.
Not only has Brooklyn Beckham followed in his father’s football boots by signing for a Premier League club at a young age. It seems he is also a fan of his dad’s hair! Brooklyn this week dyed his hair blonde, and looks remarkably like his father in his bleached days.
We are Family… Bruce Jenner has certainly had a hard time of recent. Only last week he was spotted looking distressed and visibly upset following a magazine cover which claimed he is now ‘living like a woman’. But in true Kardashian style – in front of the camera – the family got together for a show of solidarity. Needless to say it was soon shared on Instagram by Kylie Jenner (Bruce’s daughter), Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Queen of the cam herself, Kim Kardashian. Nothing like a private family moment….
Kim Sears 200k – Andy Murray Love
Ronal-doh! Has Ronaldo made the biggest faux-pas of his dating career by dumping Russian beauty Irina Shayk? It was first claimed that Ronaldo ended their 5 year relationship as she refused to attend his Mother’s 60th birthday party. However, those claims were refuted by the Shayk’s P.R team in a press release, which read "Any negative rumours with regards to Irina and the Ronaldo family are completely false, and have not been a factor in the cause of the spilt. Irina has no further comment at the time."
Whilst eyes should have been on Murray in the Sear-ing heat of the Australian Open in Melbourne, they were all on Murray’s Fiancé, Kim Sears as she gave the world a second glimpse of THAT dazzling £200,000 ring which Murray declared his love with last November. Wearing her hair in her signature bouncy curls, she looked on in happiness as her Scots beau defeated Yuki Bhambri in his first round match.

RANGE ROVER 2015 Land Rover is on a roll right now. The new Range Rover is registering plenty of “all the car you’ll ever need” verdicts, and now the new Range Rover Sport is achieving excellent reviews all round. It’s a huge improvement over the old model and from the way it handles to the luxury it offers, the Sport is good enough to make you reconsider that regular Range Rover purchase. Here’s our take on the essentials:
Interior Inside it’s just as luxurious as the Range Rover, with highquality materials as far as the eye can see. Most tests so far have covered Autobiographyspec cars, which naturally twists the luxury up to 11, but every Range Rover Sport is well-appointed. It’s comfortable wherever you’re sitting, though in models with seven seats the rear couple are best occupied by children, rather than adults. It’s more spacious than the old car, if not quite as enormous inside as the regular Rangie. The boot is bigger than most estate cars, at 784 litres and rising to 1761 with the seats down. Visibility is excellent thanks to the usual commanding Range Rover driving position, though befitting its sport billing, you do sit a little lower and a little more snug in this car than the larger Range Rover.
The Sport’s cabin feels very nearly as plush and bespoke as that of the Range Rover itself, with masses of lovely leather and all the gadgetry you could realistically require
Driving A massive 400-kilo diet has transformed the way the Sport drives. “Sport” is still pushing it in truth as it’ll never out-handle a Porsche Boxster for example, but then the Boxster can’t carry your full family or forge through rivers either. For its size, the Sport is alarmingly capable. One reviewer says it handles like a car half its size, the steering is sharp and the body remains level in the bends. Drive more sedately and it plays the luxury car game as well as any traditional luxury car. Refinement at speed is excellent, the ride quality is cosseting and it’s almost exactly as comfortable as its bigger brother. You’ll be pleased to learn it’s just as good off road as the Range Rover too. Things are even more impressive on the motorway, where the Sport lopes along relaxingly and feels incredibly stable
Engine The Sport now has the same power units as the Range Rover. That’s a 3.0 SDV6 diesel, a 4.4 V8 diesel, the 3.0 diesel hybrid and the loopy supercharged V8 petrol. Not a single Sport takes longer than seven seconds to dash to 60mph, so performance won’t be an issue, whatever version you pick. If you’re tempted to go
frugal, the smaller diesel runs around 38mpg combined, while the hybrid kicks that up to a theoretical 44mpg – though it’s a bit pricey. The V8 diesel makes a much nicer noise and 32.5mpg doesn’t seem like too much of a penalty, though the supercharged V8 petrol’s 510hp will suck down fuel at the rate of 22mpg as it launches you at the horizon with a 5s 0-60mph time. Not enough? There’s a 550hp version – as found in the Jaguar XFR-S – that’s half a second quicker. The 3.0SDV6 engine is almost double the claimed economy of the V8 supercharged petrol, the diesel already has already won the battle in the UK - it'll outsell the petrol car by a
huge amount. Luckily, there are more reasons to opt for the V6 diesel than just saving money. "In reality, it delivers all the performance you'd need" says one tester, and at sub7 seconds to 60 - on par with a typical 200 bhp hot hatch - it's not hard to see what they mean. What's more, most testers find the engine's muted hum not just unintrusive, but pleasant, and the 8-speed auto gearbox is excellent. That it can manage 38 mpg combined and cost half that of the V8 to tax is just the icing on the cake. The joy of the SDV6 is that you don’t need to bully it to get the performance most drivers need, most of the time
Value for money There are two ways of looking at this. The “glass half full” way is that at £20,000 less than the equivalent “proper” Range Rover, yet offering most of its ability and the option of two extra seats, it’s an incredible bargain and a borderline essential purchase. The other is that it’s still a fair chunk of change and a BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne will get you more economy and even better handling for less money. Then again, to get a Cayenne that goes faster than the topend Sport you have to spend over £10k more, and by the time you reach that level you could probably afford both if you desired.

The Rangers Fans Fighting Fund are prepared to back the Rangers Supporters Trust with cash in their bid to keep Ibrox Stadium out of the clutches of Ashley.
The RST welcomed the “substantial legal fund available, should it be required” to fight any attempt to give the Newcastle owner and Rangers shareholder security over the cash-strapped club’s two biggest assets. Ashley filed documents notifying land register bosses that he planned to mortgage the stadium and Murray Park training ground to Sports Direct in return for a reported £10m loan offer.
Chairman Somers previously stated that Ibrox would never be used as security against a loan. Meanwhile, just days after purchasing another one million shares in the financially burdened club, Director Sandy Easdale has claimed police are investigating threats made against him over the battle for control of the Ibrox club. Officers are believed to be monitoring his home after internet posts allegedly urged fans to attack his house in a bid to remove him from the club. Easdale also claims he had also received threats by email and letter.

Doolan to the Four Partick prolonged Hamilton's post-Alex Neil slump as Kris Doolan hit four in his side's 5-0 Premiership win at Firhill. Doolan ran riot with two goals either side of half-time, Nathan Eccleston adding an 89th-minute fifth to give Thistle a first victory of 2015 and leave the Accies without a point in three games since their manager left for Norwich. Neil will be joined at Carrow Road by assistant Frankie McAvoy after this weekend, leaving Martin Canning to fend for himself in his role as caretaker player-manager, and Hamilton will begin life without their long-serving coach five points off third place.
Thistle were well worth their first home win in the league since November 8, dealing comfortably with opponents who came into the game with as many league goals as champions Celtic.
Ali Crawford did miss a couple of presentable early opportunities, but Partick were ahead when Doolan applied the finishing touch to Ryan Stevenson's goalbound lob a minute before the halfhour.
of a back-heeled hat-trick goal from Doolan (60), who completed his personal haul two minutes later with a header from Stephen O'Donnell's cross. Doolan made way for Eccleston, and it was the substitute who followed up his own saved shot to finish the scoring.
Steven Lawless fired wide before Doolan's second (44), buried after a smart turn, and Lawless hit the bar soon after half-time as Partick continued to dominate. Their reward came in extravagant style courtesy
Glasgow Warriors fullback set for London Irish move British and Irish Lions full-back Sean Maitland will leave Glasgow Warriors for London Irish this summer. The 26-year-old has agreed to join Irish on a “long-term contract”, and could slot in as a replacement for Tom Homer if the full-back signs for Bath as expected. New Zealand-born Maitland admitted the summer arrival of new Kiwi head coach Tom Coventry proved a big selling point in his decision to sign for Irish. The 15-cap Scotland full-back believes the Aviva Premiership club are making positive strides after rugby director Brian Smith resigned his post to return to Australia.
“I’m excited to be joining London Irish at the end of the season,” said Maitland, who follows All Blacks prop Ben Franks in signing for the Premiership club. “Having spoken to (London Irish coaches) Bob Casey and Glenn Delaney, and knowing how Tom Coventry operates as a coach, helped with my decision making.
“The structure off the field is exceptional and with the appointments that have been made, the club is clearly striving to get back to the top of the European game and I’m looking forward to being involved in that process.” Former Crusaders wing Maitland joined Glasgow in 2012 and made his Scotland debut a year later, qualifying through grandparents.

Charity giving kids a lift in memory of ex-pat Hoops fan For modern day football fans, technology means the days of huddling around a radio or watching crackly footage are long gone. And while this may be missed by some, for many ex-pats living in far flung corners of the globe internet forums and websites offer the opportunity to forge friendships and share their passion, bringing them close to the action, just as though they were on the terraces themselves. One football fan who enjoyed online interaction was the late Martin Kane, Kano to his friends. An avid Celtic supporter, originally from Glasgow and living in Perth Western Australia, Martin was well known on the Celtic Quick News site where he made regular contributions until he was struck down by the rare Devic’s Syndrome in 2008. This debilitating neurological condition causes sufferers to experience a lifetime’s worth of MS in a matter of hours. Martin spent months in hospital and his plight was made all the more worrying for his family when his home needed tens of thousands of pounds worth of adaptations before he could be discharged. In the true spirit of friendship, fellow Celtic fans across the
Sadly, just over six years since first taking unwell, Martin passed away last month (January) leaving his wife Carolyn and two children Sean and Alanna behind. Poignantly though, he has also left behind a fantastic legacy in The Kano Foundation. John Paul Gilmartin, one of the charity’s founding members and trustees explains “Martin was a key part of the inspiration behind The Kano Foundation and one of our patrons. “He loved to hear about our work and always kept up to date with groups that were visiting or milestone events such as our recent 3000th child and 4th annual Christmas party. “Many of us remember being lifted over the turnstiles as kids, just as we remember the grainy TV pictures from European away trips. may be gone but, for many kids, The Kano Foundation is that lift. “It takes a lot of hard work and fundraising to enable us to do what we do but the sheer delight on the face of each kid who steps into the stadium for the first time makes it all worthwhile. We would not be here though if not for the generosity of the fans who make donations to help us, many of them the same fans who helped Martin. “Martin was a well-loved member of the Celtic family and we are honoured to continue our work in his memory. We would encourage anyone who thinks we can help to get in touch.” The Kano Foundation offers places for up to 72 children and 12 adult helpers at Celtic home league matches. Celtic and Motherwell both celebrated the life of Martin Kane at their recent midweek game, with both teams participating in a pre-match one minute applause and the hoops side wearing black armbands for the match.
Murray takes twitter swipe at critics
Following Rafa Nadal’s problems with cramps in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday, Andy Murray has taken a swipe at critics who gave him a hard time after his own struggles at the US Open. Third seed Nadal fought through cramps all over his body on a balmy night at Rod Laver Arena to beat American qualifier Tim Smyczek in five sets and was praised for his fighting spirit in mainstream and social media.
Murray battled through cramps during his opening round win against Robin Haase at the US Open in August and complained of a different reaction on his Twitter account. “When I cramped and won in the us open last year I was a “drama Queen, unfit, needs to see a shrink, faker” weird...”, Murray tweeted on Thursday. Murray previously copped flak for having fitness problems at the 2012 French Open, where he overhauled Finn Jarkko Niemenin in the second round

British three-times grand slam champion Virginia Wade famously described Murray as a “drama queen” after his troubles, earning a stinging rebuke from the indignant Scot. Murray came back after back surgery last year and failed to add to his two grand slam titles but has been in peak condition early at Melbourne Park, winning both his opening round matches in straight sets.

KING: “I HAVE THE TIME AND RESOURCES”
Conor Gildea
The former oldco Rangers director is determined to dislodge the Ibrox board at a general meeting next month. However, it has been reported that he could end up in further trouble after the South African government reopened a number of cases after uncovering a spying
scandal. King, on the other hand, is adamant he would pass the SFA’s ‘fit and proper’ person test. Last weekend it emerged he could fight to overturn his settlement agreement with tax authorities on the basis that the Pretoria government acted unlawfully in obtaining evidence against him. King, though, is focused on trying to rid Rangers of Mike Ashley,
Derek Llambias, the Easdale brothers and David Somers – and has no interest in going over old ground. “Even if my legal team could make out a case for review, I would not pursue it,” said King. “I am happy with the settlement and the opportunity this created for me to lead a normal business and personal life. “My business interests have performed very strongly
post-settlement, with the SA government by far my largest customer. “I am also able to enjoy my role as executive chairman of a public company without the integrity issues that previously dogged me. Importantly, I also now have sufficient time and resources to invest in getting Rangers back on track.” King has the backing of Paul Murray, John Gilligan, the Three Bears consortium,
Rangers fans and several minority investors as he bids to persuade 51 per cent of shareholders to vote out the Ibrox board and bring about change. A date has yet to be set for the meeting, with the board facing two options – to negotiate with King before any meeting or put their fate in the hands of shareholders.
