BANNED FOOTBALL THUG ON STEWARD DUTY AT IBROX The Glasgow News

EXCLUSIVE

Malcolm Macaskill David Craig, who in March 2012 was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment and a 3 year UK wide football banning order, was spotted on duty as a match day employee at Ibrox on the 18th October 2014, where Rangers took on Raith Rovers. David Craig (26) originally from

Paisley posed for photographs alongside members of the Armed Forces at Ibrox in his steward’s uniform.

Craig was jailed for posting pictures online depicting former Celtic F.C manager Neil Lennon covered in bullets along with vile and threatening comments. Craig, no stranger to the courts, had numerous previous convictions prior to his online attack on Neil Lennon; one for carrying a knife and another for

being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug. At the time of posting his attacks on Neil Lennon, he was already on bail and also on a deferred sentence for a drug trafficking offence. On jailing Craig, Sheriff Martin Jones QC branded his posts as “Vile” and “Hateful” adding “There is no place for them in an enlightened society. This sort of thing leads to more of the same.” By attending and working at the stadium on a match day, David Craig

was committing a criminal offence, an offence which could attract a further period of imprisonment.

In October of this year, despite his UK wide football banning order, Craig applied for a steward’s position at Ibrox. He applied via Servoca Secure, one of the sub-contracted match day security companies that are employed by the Ibrox club. A spokesman for Servoca stated that “David Craig had applied for a steward’s position in October, and had

been going through the vetting process. After his initial application he was invited for a training induction day”, this took place on Armed Forces day at Ibrox, where Rangers went on to beat Raith Rovers 6-1. The Servoca spokesman stated that it is company policy that no employee is ‘put on site’ until the vetting process is completed, however as our front cover picture shows, Craig was on site, and wearing company issued uniform. BANNED FOOTBALL THUG ON STEWARD DUTY AT IBROX Continued from page 1.

The Servoca spokesman went on to say that “no CRB checks are done on basic stewarding staff”. Approximately four days after Craig’s appearance at Ibrox, Servoca elected to take David Craig’s application no further, citing the ‘gaps in his employment history’, yet, after receiving and reviewing his application only the previous week they felt encouraged to invite him for a ‘training induction day’ at Ibrox on the 18th of October. The Glasgow News contacted

Rangers Football Club to ask if they were aware that an individual who had been jailed for 14 months for an online attack on Neil Lennon, and who was still bound by a UK wide football banning order, was on duty in a steward capacity?

The PSNI Operation Titan team arrested Craig in November where he was subsequently charged with criminal damage, attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and rioting.

We received the following statement, on behalf of both Rangers Football Club and Garrion Security services: “The individual in the photograph is not an employee of Garrion Security Services or Rangers Football Club. Garrion Security Services are owned 100% by Rangers Football Club, and oversee all safety and security for both the Club and Fans on match days. Upon his release from prison last year David Craig moved to Northern Ireland where he was a regular at Unionist fundraisers.

In March of this year, Craig was allegedly forced out of Belfast by the UDA Paramilitary group. He was said to have been given 24 hours to leave the country after upsetting chiefs. He had been attending a band night on The Sandy Row, Belfast, where he was accused of stealing drinks from other guests. He also uploaded pictures to Facebook, from the event, which subsequently led the PSNI and Belfast City Council

to launch an investigation into an alleged UDA show of strength. These pictures showed men wearing balaclavas, masks and sweatshirts with the Loyalist Paramilitary groups emblem embroidered on to them. In one of the pictures uploaded he added the comment (sic) “The real deal excellent proud UDA men me 1 day a wish lol !! The biggest dementia conference was held in Scotland (attended by 800 professionals, people with dementia and carers) in Glasgow last week (2023 October) at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The focus of the conference was Dignity and autonomy in Dementia and the four day event explored how recognising the human rights of people with dementia, their carers, partners and families is key to ensuring dignity and respect, as well as overcoming stigma. It was the 24th Annual Conference of Alzheimer Europe, supported this year by Alzheimer Scotland. Cabinet Secretary for Health, Alex Neil, delivered a keynote speech to the conference at the Tuesday morning plenary session. Key to the event was the signing of the Glasgow Declaration: a commitment to promoting the rights, dignity and autonomy of people living with dementia across Europe, as guaranteed in the European Convention of Human Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This took place on Monday 20 October at 6pm.

Dementia friendly training at The Avenue RETAILERS and the management team at The Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns took part in Dementia Friendly Training this week to help East Renfrewshire become a more Dementia Friendly community. The initiative is the result of an innovative partnership between East Renfrewshire Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP) and Alzheimer Scotland to raise awareness of ‘dementia friendly communities’ across East Renfrewshire. Starting with The Avenue, the partnership offered training to staff on understanding dementia and its impacts. Julie Murray, Director of East Renfrewshire CHCP opened the training session, saying “Everyone has a role to play in making East Renfrewshire a dementia friendly community and we are delighted to be kick starting the training with The Avenue Shopping Centre, who are committed to supporting people living with dementia and their carers.”

The training was led by Zaid Tariq, of CHCP, who said: “Older people, including those with dementia, are often more frequent customers of town centre shops. Most say they want to keep going out and about using local shops and services. That’s why we chose to kick-off our Dementia Friendly Training programme in The Avenue. “Around 1,600 people in East Renfrewshire are living with dementia and this number will only increase in the coming years. Quite often, people living with dementia can lose confidence in themselves and worry about how they will manage in shops and businesses.“This training programme will help both retailers and The Avenue management team understand dementia and learn how they can help those shoppers living with dementia in our community.”

and advice about what practical measures we could take to ensure that we can build a Dementia Friendly community.

“The Avenue has a long and proud tradition of playing an active role in the local community and we are delighted to continue that tradition through our participation in Dementia Friendly training.”Scotland’s National

Dementia Strategy emphasises the importance of supporting people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible and to maintain their social and community connections. Key to successful implementation of the strategy is partnership in action, working together and getting the fundamentals of dementia care right – to see the person not the condition

and to ensure that people’s rights are respected and they are able to live with dignity in the community of their choice. The Avenue Shopping Centre offers shoppers a warm and welcoming shopping experience conveniently located on the outskirts of Glasgow city centre. For further information about The Avenue log onto www.avenueshopping.co.uk.

Michelle McCabe, Centre Manager at The Avenue, said: “We are proud to be chosen as the first recipient of this innovative training programme which provided myself, my management team and our retailers with some tremendous insights into dementia

A Power of Attorney allows you to take steps to ensure that a person that you trust makes decisions relating to your welfare and finances if you become unable to do so.

You can decide when you want the powers regarding your finances to start. They can start immediately and continue in place if you are unable to make decisions for yourself or you can decide that you only want to grant these powers to start when you are unable to make decisions for yourself. Decisions regarding your welfare can only be made by an attorney when you are unable to make them for yourself. Financial powers can be as wide as you want them to be and include powers such as the

Can anyone grant a Power of Attorney? Anyone who has “legal capacity” can grant a Power of Attorney. This means anyone who understands the consequences of granting these powers to someone else can make one.

Attorney. As long as you are able to understand what you are doing by granting the Power of Attorney and the consequences of doing so you can still grant one. Who can be an Attorney? You can choose who can be your attorney. It is generally a family member or a professional person such as a solicitor or financial adviser. It must, of course, be someone you trust to always act in your best interests. If you have any questions to ask Claire you can email them into our office and we will pass them on to Claire for you.

Glasgow Prestwick launches new guide for disabled people Conor Gildea

Glasgow Prestwick has produced a comprehensive new guide for disabled passengers in conjunction with a leading provider of accessibility and equality services. The new guide, developed in partnership with DisabledGo, aims to assist disabled people or anyone who would like to know more about how to get to and around the airport. Glasgow Prestwick is committed to providing all passengers with a firstclass experience and has a dedicated team working to assist people with reduced mobility. Currently each year it serves some 6000 passengers requiring assistance. Glasgow Prestwick’s Jules Matteoni said: “DisabledGo were the perfect

partners in this project. They are a business developed by disabled people for improving access for the disabled and we are very happy with the results. Our improvement journey starts here and, with the support of DisabledGo, we aim to have a first-class venue guide and provide the information people require.” DisabledGo is the UK’s leading provider of accessibility and equality services and was set up in 2000 as a result of founder Gregory Burke’s experiences and frustrations in trying to access his local community as a wheelchair user.

The organization’s website now features over 120,000 venues across the UK, all of which have been visited and assessed by a trained surveyor using a tool developed in consultation with hundreds of disability organizations. DisabledGo already works extensively across Scotland with thirteen local authorities including the airport’s local council South Ayrshire.

The airport was independently assessed in person by DisabledGo surveyors in the summer. The access guide talks users through the accessibility of the airport - from transport to check-in, security to departures and assistance on and off aircraft. It also provides detailed information - from walking distances to toilet locations, fixtures and fitting to dimensions, signage to hearing assistance and lighting.

DisabledGo’s Director Anna Borthwick said: “We’re delighted to be working with Glasgow Prestwick and it was clear from the outset that the airport is committed to improving the customer experience of disabled people. We hope other airports will look at this project and consider what more they could do to be open to all.” The guide is available free of charge at www.disabledgo.com and www.glasgowprestwick.com.

MARYHILL FUNERAL SERVICES

Here when you need us most

On Tuesday 28th October, Forty-one year old David McKinney of Glasgow was sentenced to six years in jail following his conviction and sentencing for a catalogue of domestic abuse offences against several partners. He was placed on an Order for Lifelong Restriction to serve a minimum custodial sentence of 6 years and also placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely. The conviction and sentencing follows a lengthy investigation by Police Scotland’s Domestic Abuse Taskforce, which began in March 2013. Detective Inspector Sam McCluskey, of the Domestic Abuse Taskforce, Police Scotland, said

today: “McKinney subjected his partners to daily assaults, which quickly escalated to serious sexual violence. The testimony provided by his ex-partners was horrifying, and it is thanks to their extreme bravery that this violent abuser has been convicted and jailed for a significant length of time. Domestic abuse will not be tolerated by Police Scotland. We will continue with our efforts to trace perpetrators of this type of crime, and we remain focused on targeting these repeat and serial offenders across the country.

I would urge anyone in Scotland who may be subjected to domestic abuse to contact police on 101 – you do not have to be a victim – we can get you the help you deserve.”

Alex Salmond and artist Gerard Burns visit CLIC Sargent’s Malcolm Sargent House Dylan Flynn

Alex Salmond visited Malcolm Sargent House, CLIC Sargent’s Prestwick holiday home, with artist Gerard Burns after his painting of him raised £51,500 for the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people. Gerard’s ‘14 for 14’ exhibition was launched during the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and featured 14 Scots who inspired him. The fund raising exhibition raised money for 14 charities with proceeds from the auction of his portrait of Alex Salmond going to CLIC Sargent.

He was joined by Gerard as he presented the cheque to staff at Malcolm Sargent House and met with a group of young people and their families who have been supported by CLIC Sargent, as he had a tour of the house.

Every year, CLIC Sargent helps hundreds of families to take a short break, free of charge, at Malcolm Sargent House in Ayrshire. Offering holidays for young people and their families during and after treatment, as well as shorter breaks during the weekends or low season, accommodation and all meals are provided free of charge, giving families the chance to get away from the stresses of daily life and spend precious time together. Burns said he decided to paint Scots who inspired him to mark 2014 as a landmark year for Scotland, with the recent Independence Referendum and Commonwealth Games, and has organised the multi-charity event that celebrates each character he has chosen to paint, whilst raising funds for each of his sitters’ chosen charities. Gerard Burns said: “I was absolutely over the moon when the First Minister decided it would be CLIC Sargent who would benefit from the proceeds of this painting,

because it is a charity that is very close to my heart and one that I have a long standing commitment to support.

“I am eternally grateful to the business community in Scotland who via this portrait, have donated so generously to this wonderful charity. By doing so theyhave made it possible for CLIC Sargent to continue their amazing work and in particular the services that Malcolm Sargent house provides, which is vital, particularly for families who are going through such a tough time.” CLIC Sargent Community Fund raising Manager, May Gilchrist, said: “We were thrilled to welcome the First Minister and Gerard Burns to Malcolm Sargent House, and it was fantastic to see the artwork which raised vital money for CLIC Sargent. “CLIC Sargent currently reaches two out of three children and young people with cancer and the money raised at auction from Gerard’s brilliant painting will help the charity to be there for even more families in need of support.”

• Make sure your car has been serviced and is ready for winter, have items like a torch and a shovel in the boot and only make essential journeys.

Councillor John McDowall, Environment and sustainability Portfolio Holder for the Council said: “The Scottish weather is very unpredictable, who knows what the weather will be like in the months to come and we must be ready. There’s no point in waiting until bad weather strikes to get organised, so businesses and individuals need to put plans in place now to cope with whatever weather this winter throws at us.” Before extreme winter weather arrives remember:

Batman Shows His Light Side NASA rocket A REAL-LIFE superhero has turned down six-figure offers for his home-made Batmobile so he can continue helping sick children. Batman fanatic Zac Mihajlovic, from Camden, Australia, hand-built his very own street legal version of the car from the 1989 film starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. The 29-year-old turned his comic book fantasies into a high-octane

reality by constructing a replica of the iconic vehicle. And the car has whipped up a reaction wherever it has been seen. Businessmen from across the world, including a Sheik in Dubai, have offered Zac big bucks for the Batmobile - and he has also seen his share of bizarre requests. And rather than cash-in on his dream machine, Zac decided to use his powers for good by teaming up with the Make-AWish foundation, who make dreams come true for terminally-ill children.

explodes seconds after launch

A NASA rocket due to be visible across the East Coast on its way to the International Space Station blew up on 28th October. The rocket exploded just 6 seconds after lift-off from the Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island in Virginia. Engineers “they have no early indications of what went wrong and that said “there were no problems reported before the launch

The launch appeared to be going perfectly, the Antares rocket bound for the ISS left the launch pad but seconds later it exploded.

Australia’s most senior IS member allegedly killed

“This is a tough evening, said Frank Culberston of Orbital Sciences, which is working with the FAA to investigate the explosion..

It has been claimed that Ali

Fire engulfed the launch pad, which it appears has sustained major damage - although NASA officials confirmed that there were no casualties from the explosion -and the damage was contained to the launch facility.

“We want to express our disappointment, especially to the researchers who had science on board.

NASA requested that the public stay away from the site, and have discouraged people from attempting to collect ‘souvenirs’.

Barayalei has been killed in Syria. Barayeli was in a trusted position in IS

operational command and is believed to have been a key

figure in recruiting at least 30 Australians for the conflicts The former Nightclub bouncer Mohammad Ali Baryalei is

also believed to have been the

mastermind behind shocking plot to snatch a stranger off the streets of Sydney and behead them.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said

the Government is trying to confirm reports of Baryalei’s death.

• To set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am (or after midnight on bonfire night).

> CONTACT US

Be safe this year and attend an organised display.

Watching fireworks can be great fun for children. However, figures show that, more often than not, it’s children rather than adults who are injured by fireworks. Over the past five years over 350 pre-school children, some as young as one year old, were treated in hospital for firework injuries. Be safe and always follow the fireworks code.

• Never use flammable liquids to ignite bonfires - use proprietary fire lighters.

Any bonfire failing to satisfy safety conditions or where people are behaving irresponsibly may be deemed dangerous and as such, subject to being either removed, extinguished or otherwise made safe.

WHAT NOT TO MISS...

NCIS: Los Angeles

The Flash

“Inelegant Heart” was not the big NCIS: Los Angeles Hetty episode I thought it would be. Instead, it was the set up. This wouldn’t have bothered me had the main case been handled much better. Everything about Papa Legba and his whole operation though seemed kiddie school for our operatives. Sam and Callen were trapped on a freaking submarine and now they have to deal with only 3 (that’s the number I’m picking) inept guards? I was glad to see that Legba’s operation on the inside at least had machineguns and started shooting (except they gave up too quickly in my opinion- you have machine guns). And thankfully the 4th string assassin that got stuck in the dog door wasn’t the top guy. Hetty, I’m worried about you now (well sorta, you’re Edna Mode and therefore invincible), but at least that aspect of theplotline made sense at the end.

The spin-off from SKY 1’s popular show Arrow has finally aired. The long-awaited show, The Flash, stars Grant Gustin as the eponymous hero a.k.a Barry Allen who wakes up after a nine-month coma with the ability to run faster than anyone else. This ability is due to an accident involving a particle accelerator, which created other “metahumans” with other abilities. Barry not only has to deal with one of these “metahumans”, he also has to figure out what he wants to do with his new-found abilities whilst obsessing over who killed his mother when he was a child.

With that out of the way, Hetty’s hearing in D.C. worked very well especially with John Heard as her adversary, Michael Thomas, and Eddie Shin as her attorney, Matthew. Honestly, I could have watched a whole hour of her bouncing back and forth with Heard while having funny conversations with Shin on the side. Hetty, you have to let him do something. He is your attorney! Seeing what truth Hetty revealed was also interesting. She won’t give up Kensi’s relationship to the White Ghost, but she did drop the bomb that she was holding the German agent in the nursing home as an asset. Spread the sort-of-truth in with the real truth. I like it. Back in LA, I also had loads of fun seeing the agents interact with Aisha Hinds as Special Investigator Wallace from the Department of Justice. Barrett Foa’s whole exchange with her was priceless. Hind’s is also the perfect actress to be a new thorn in the side of everyone. She’s strong, doesn’t take crap, and can be a little scary at times. And I hope she has more hilariously awkward conversations with Eric. Wait, actually, I want to see her interact with Hetty. Make it happen!

The Missing BBC1’s eight-part thriller The Missing takes as its starting point the disappearance of a five-year-old boy in 2006, while on holiday in France. The action alternates between the immediate aftermath of the tragedy and the present day, where the boy’s parents - now divorced - are still deeply traumatised andstruggling to cope. The mother (Frances O’Connor) takes refuge behind a facade of acceptance; the father (James Nesbitt) wanders the streets of the anonymous French town where he last saw his son, befuddled by grief and alcohol, looking for any clues to solve the mystery. When a credible lead does eventually surface, he persuades the detective formerly in charge of the case (Tcheky Karyo) to come out of retirement and help with the quest. By this time, the episode has alluded to a whole host of conspiracies, hidden motives, personal agendas and scandals that any investigation will no doubt unearth along the way. But the series, like the caseitself, is in absolutely no hurry to give up its secrets. The Missing is a very effective thriller driven by the fine performances of its lead actors, with Nesbitt particularly convincing in tormented and belligerent mode. The plot did lurch occasionally, with one contrivance requiring an epic suspension of disbelief, but by the end of the first hour it had achieved its primary objectives of hooking the audience’s interest and curiosity.

Gustin quickly squashed any doubts about his acting abilities with his likeable and engaging performance. The talented Tom Cavanagh as the intriguing Dr. Harrison Wells, Danielle Panabaker as Dr.Caitlin Snow and Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon join him. We also see some of Barry’s personal life with Candice Patton playing his best friend, Iris West, and her father Detective Joe West (Jesse L. Martin). In addition to its talented cast, The Flash also has a captivating plot. The writers clearly have a firm grasp on the elements needed to capture an audience. The only issue with the pilot was the amount of storyline in a single episode. The pilot alone established Barry’s backstory, his origins, his first foe and introduced several characters. As a result, the villain wasn’t as imposing as he could have been.

Fans of Arrow have already met Barry, Cisco and Caitlin but they are treated to the appearance of Oliver Queen as the Green Arrow in the episode. However, even people who aren’t fans can appreciate and enjoy the show. The same is true for people who have never read any of the DC comics.

The Flash is enjoyable for those who are a fan of the genre and should definitely be checked out. The new show offers something entertaining for DC and non-comic fans alike. I, for one, will continue watching to see how the writers and producers continue developing the characters and the mythology surrounding not only both shows but the rest of the DC universe as well.

WHAT NOT TO MISS...

HORNS (tbc)

NIGHTCRAWLER (tbc)

INTERSTELLER (tbc)

Daniel Radcliffe finds horns sprouting from his head in this devilishly enjoyable horror fable! Smalltown couple Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) and Merrin Williams (Juno Temple) are childhood sweethearts. When Merrin is murdered, Ig becomes the prime suspect. The police don’t have enough evidence to charge him, but only Ig’s family and his public defender friend Lee (Max Minghella) believe in his innocence. Then our horrified hero awakes to find horns sprouting from his temples. Naturally, the locals see this as a sign of his guilt and reason that the Devil has claimed him. But there’s an intriguing side effect. Ig now finds his embarrassing appendages cause those around him to share their deepest secrets and darkest urges! This strikingly original, blackly comic supernatural fantasy is adapted from the novel by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill. It’s directed by Alexandre Aja, who gave us ‘Piranha 3D’ and ‘The Hills Have Eyes’.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in a nerve-shredding thriller set in the sleazy, cut-throat world of LA crime journalism. Unemployed and broke, Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is thwarted at every turn as he searches for work. Then he happens upon a car crash, where an intrusive, hard-nosed cameraman is delighted to be first on the scene. This is Lou’s introduction to the seedy lifestyle of ‘nightcrawlers’ - roving freelance camera crews whose motto is, “If it bleeds, it leads.” He’s soon out on the streets, desperate to beat his rivals to crime scenes, pile-ups and major fires. His recklessness and dedication impress tough-minded TV executive Nina (Rene Russo). But the temptation to go one step further in pursuit of a scoop lands him in deep water. Jake Gyllenhaal lost 20 pounds in weight to become the gaunt nightcrawler for this gripping voyage into LA’s seamy underbelly. It’s the directorial debut of ‘Bourne Legacy’ co-writer Dan Gilroy.

Explorers journey though a wormhole in space to save humanity in this mind-bending sci-fi from the director of ‘Inception’. Single father Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is a highly trained pilot. But his skills are redundant in a future world that seems to be turning into a hostile dust bowl. Then a scientist (Michael Caine) persuades him that it is time for mankind to look to the stars for salvation. His idea is to make use of a recently discovered wormhole in space to find habitable planets. But to take part in this risky, pioneering mission, Cooper will have to leave his two young children behind. Visionary ‘Inception’ and ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy director Christopher Nolan has been typically tight-lipped about this extraordinary project. But he promises to add jaw-droppingly innovative visual techniques to his rich storytelling palette. The film also reunites him with Catwoman actress Anne Hathaway. Watch out too for the cameo by Matt Damon.

TAKE 2 – GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (tbc) A human adventurer teams up with a band of alien misfits to save the galaxy in this thrilling new Marvel superhero epic. Roguish Earthman Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), AKA StarLord, has got himself into a whole heap of trouble. He’s stolen an orb, which is also coveted by villainous psycho Ronan (Lee Pace). Ronan will stop at nothing to retrieve the mysterious artefact. This forces our charismatic anti-hero to forge an alliance with an unlikely quartet of rival cosmic outlaws. His crew comprises vengeancecrazed warrior Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), gun-toting Rocket the raccoon (Bradley Cooper), green-skinned deadly assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and tree-like humanoid Groot (Vin Diesel). But when Quill learns of the orb’s real power, a last-ditch battle for the galaxy ensues! This awesome new addition to the Marvel cinematic universe also features a shaven-headed Karen Gillan as Ronan’s sidekick Nebula and introduces Josh Brolin as the voice of sinister supervillain Thanos.

A Look Back at Oxjam Last Saturday the team of volunteers brought us more than twenty local acts across four packed venues on Sauchiehall Street, with live art installations from Tony McKay and interactive displays from event sponsors and global onefor-one giving brand TOMS. The day flowed effortlessly with a staunch line-up incorporating an excellent youth showcase event in the afternoon followed by some of the best unsigned talent our local music scene has to offer and even a surprise acoustic performance from X-Factor’s Emily Middlemas. This year, organisers in Glasgow have more than doubled the fundraising target set by Oxfam and managed to raise over £7000 along with winning the approval of audiences, volunteers, musicians and host venues across the city. Regional Manager Leeanne Boulton credits the event’s success to the involvement of big-hearted businesses and Glasgow Chamber members, who got behind the festival and its social ethos from day 1. Leeanne says: “When I took the concept to our first corporate partner, MadeBrave, it wasn’t anything more than a blank page, but Andrew and co got behind us, created bespoke branding and paved the way for us to approach other sponsors.” 29 Studios and Glasgow Credit Union were next to get on board, the former providing creative space at their Pirate Studios for the volunteers to plan the festival, and Glasgow Credit Union providing corporate sponsorship for the warm up fashion meets music event, OxGlam, at the Corinthian Club, an event which raised over £1,500 for Oxfam. BrewDog and Social Bite followed, the former ensuring artists taking part got a wee refreshment in exchange for donating their time to perform, whilst Social Bite - who donate every penny of profit to good causes, and 1 in 4 of the team are formerly homeless people - provided lunches for the team of 30 plus volunteers who were undertaking 12 hour days.

John McAlinden from Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 who headlined O’Neill’s told us “Oxjam was great fun. Good people, good vibes, laughter, dancing, music and romance – all for a good cause. It was like the love boat, only on dry land. We’re proud to have been part of something so special. Well done to all who helped raise money and smiles.” Things kicked off in O’Neill’s where the stage was sponsored by Precise Events & Audio, one of the many local businesses who offered their support to Oxjam this year. The very talented Zoe Bestel opened the show, with a voice that’d shame the cherubs. One of her first gigs was at her local Oxjam and now that she’s toured the country and been involved in a variety of festivals, receiving critical acclaim it was particularly nice to see her returning. Other Bands on display on the night included the likes of Anton and the Colts, who played brilliantly despite being down a few members, The Cut Throat Razors, who played an extremely energetic show getting more than heads bobbing within the crowd, and Lo Bird who sang a plethora of brilliant songs as well as helping out with the raffle. Half way through the night in Box, Rank Berry roared on-stage with their usual classic rock panache; Jamie O’Donnell’s Axel Rose-esque vocals and Brian Kerr’s intricate yet effortless lead guitar swagger are particularly intoxicating to any audience. This Disease is my favourite track from these boys to date, which is featured on their debut EP due for release at the end of this year. The Oxjam Glasgow team would like to thank every audience member, every act and everyone who supported the event should be very proud of themselves. £7000 is an incredible amount to raise and only serves to show what an excellent music scene we have in this city. Well done Glesga!

Yelp Glasgow is going all-out to celebrate Halloween this year with a super-sized quiz night at The Sparkle Horse. On Sunday 2 November, Yelpers will be quizzing it up to raise money for MediCinema at Yorkhill Children’s Hospital. The night is being organised by Briony Cullin, Yelp Glasgow Community Manager and Leanne Rae, and will be the perfect way to top off Halloween celebrations in Glasgow. MediCinema brings the joy and escapism of cinema to patients undergoing treatment for complex illnesses and injuries in hospitals around the UK. The cinemas are specifically designed to comfortably accommodate wheelchairs and hospital beds whilst maintaining a real and immersive cinema-going experience away from the wards for patients and their families.

“I would like to say that the MediCinema is a great provision for our children. We are a national service for Scotland and often our children have no visitors during the week as the families don’t have option to stay on the ward. The MediCinema is a great provision for giving the children something to do that is enjoyable and well loved and provides some distraction and respite from homesickness and illness. Also due to the limitations financially on families and the ever unpredictable weather conditions this is a resource that is greatly appreciated from the parents and families of young people in the ward as this is a provision for all.” Zoe Mair, Deputy Ward Manager, Department of Child & Family Psychiatry.

Yellow until further notice David Gildea

After seeing Colonel Mustard and the Dijon 5 perform at the recent Oxjam fundraising festival, David from the Glasgow News got caught up in ‘Yellow Movement’. So he tracked down the Colonel to have a chat with him and find out more about them, their plans, condiments, Stefan Dennis, and why it always ends in tears with a ginger girl. Where did the name come from? The name was bestowed on us by the people of Dijon when the Colonel passed through and saved the town from a giant woman who was attempting to use the town as a condiment, the colonel dressed as a bottle of mustard trapped her in a landfill pied piper style playing his music and then gave her a five fingered karate chop to her mullet. The giant happy woman with her new haircut no longer had an unquenchable desire for mustard and instead was accepted by

51 Shades of Carly 51 Shades of Maggie has a new face and I got to catch up with her before her first show to see how she was fitting in to her new role as Maggie Muff.

For those that haven’t seen the show yet it is a spoof version of the very popular 50 Shades of Grey, all about Maggie Muff who is searching for love who bumps in to Mr. Big, but will he be the man of her dreams or is the “Private Room of Pain” just a step too far? Hilarity ensues with plenty of naughty bits making this a great girly night out. Carly Calder is elated with the chance to be involved in this great role and has enjoyed the being able to get to grips with Maggie Muff telling me that she is “loving it, absolutely loving it” and with Carly’s background having similar comedic background it is a perfect pairing.

So why would you want to be involved in a role such as this? She goes on to tell me “Having the chance to be a one woman show, what actress wouldn’t want to be a one woman show and the Glasgow banter, of course” and “I started off in acting at Holyrood High School in a play called The Dastardly Diary of Dirty Dick” giving you some inkling of where her roles have lead her. And if you would like the chance to experience just how great this show is and what Carly is going to bring to it all you have to do is enter our simple competition and answer this question, Where did Carly first get into acting? Was it: 1) Hutchison GrammarSchool 2) Holyrood High School 3) Hillhead Primary Email your answer to copy@wosmedia.co.uk

TECH WORLD

SMART WATCHES... GET SMART

Personally I am getting tired of these smart watches with all these fitness functions built in, don’t get me wrong I like smart watches, in fact I have one but surely the whole point of a smart watch – in essence – is laziness?

My own watch is pretty basic, the first of the Sony smart watches, it can do the standard trickery such as; playing my songs on my phone without me touching it, GPS on its small screen, view parts of Facebook and Twitter as well as text messages and who is calling me, answering the phone and spy on people through the camera of my phone. All of these are great but there are parts of it I would like to work

better and parts that I simply do not use. Now wouldn’t it be great if you could pay for what you want in your smart watch rather than all the things you don’t want? Well that’s where modular smart watches come in to play, modular phones have been toyed about with for a couple of years now such as Google’s Project Ara but we thought it would be a long while yet until something like this would be developed never mind a modular smart watch.

GREAT SCOTT!

Can you remember, back in 1989, there was a sequel out to a movie that was literally beyond it’s time at points? It had things like a flux capacitor, terrible styles and a few gismos’ we would like in real life. Well ladies and gentleman that time has come and Back to The Future II looks like it will live out its legacy. With not just the arrival of Hendo’s hoverboard but do you remember the Air Mag shoes that tied themselves? Nike is trying to produce them for sale, although if you don’t want to pay the hefty price-tag that will undoubtedly accompany them then I would head over to www.halloweencostumes.com

to buy them for around £60 (they even light up!) But back to the big news (even if it was slightly skimmed over), Hendo has created a HOVERBOARD!

Hendo is a Kickstarter company who needs $250,000 and at the time of writing this they were extremely close. Using something called Lenz’s Law they use magnets to keep the board hovering but not in the sense you would think, this isn’t a case of the floor being a magnet and the board using the poles to cause it to hover, as that put simply just wouldn’t work. Instead they have two hover engines beside each other which push against each other and create a magnetic field strong enough to push it from the floor, at this moment though it can

only work on metal surfaces. The way to think about it is while the magnets are pushing against each other they are also drawn to the floor, creating a stable balance of force. As you can imagine the price tag to own something like this is rather steep, £6,200 to be exact, which is why they are also going to be creating Whiteboxes at a smaller charge that you can adapt to toys and they invision creating hoverboard parks, where I think they will most likely rent out their machines. For full details of the project visit www.kickstarter.com and search for Hendo Hover.

Although there is one company doing just that, Blocks is a new kid on the… well, and it has some great thoughts about the future, with Intel also behind them I am sure it won’t be long until you can have your own.

Modular smart watches would mean a fully customised approach to what goes on your wrist, you could change out any feature for the one you would like, you could swap a finger print scanner for gesture control,

contactless technology for and audio jack or even just have an extra battery or kinetic battery. With the possibilities almost endless you could buy extra pieces for different occasions or trips that would fit in best with the type of activity or environment you are in. They aren’t available on the high street just yet but keep a watchful eye as I expect these to pick up a lot of attention.

four-wheel-drive. That means it is able to do 0-62mph in just 3.2sec and on to a top speed of 202mph.

Fancy racing around the Italian streets without a care in the world? Well…I wouldn’t if I were you because the Polizia have new toy to play with and it won’t be easy to get away from. What have they got I hear you ask; it’s only the Lamborghini Huracan.

So if you are hell bent in on ploughing through the autostradas then you better be in something that can out run this monster, which brings me to the wonderful police cars of Dubai which include a Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4, a Ferrari FF, a Chevrolet Camaro SS, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, a Bentley Continental GT, a limited edition Aston Martin One-77, Ford Mustang GT, a BMW M6 Gran Coupé, a Brabus G63 AMG, a Bugatti Veyron, an Audi R8, a Nissan GT-R, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and a McLaren MP4-12C. In which case you are most likely going to have to use a Harrier Jump Jet to get away, not that I am saying that you should be doing anything that would cause the police to chase you.

Wearing its usual blue and white Polizia livery you can still notice there is something quite sinister under the skin and you’re not mistaken. If you peel away the bodywork you will find a 602bhp 5.2litre V10 engine with a seven speed twin-clutch gearbox and

Old Boy New Tricks The classic is back, celebrating 50 years of the Ford Mustang and as you would expect they have given it a little more juice. There hasn't been many major changes to the latest model for this celebratory version which has been built for the SEMA show. What Galpin Auto Sports-modified (GAS) has done, is whack a great big Whipple super charger on it, boosting the standard 418bhp engine to 725bhp. Now that is a lot of power, to give you

a sense of justhow much power it is even more powerful than that shiny Polizia Huracan you read about. Now of course you would want to show off all of that hard work you have done, and they have, by cutting a hole in the bonnet and fitting a piece of glass, so you can see the now gold powder coated device that makes it the beast that it is. You'll also find a Magnaflow exhaust system, suspension componentry from Steeda, a minor facelift, new headlights, a carbon fibre front splitter and rocker panels, a more aggressive rear diffuser and gold flecks in the Batman-spec paintwork. Apparently Ford have also commissioned over a dozen more tuned versions of the car to celebrate the event.

Andy Murray Wins Against Julien Benneteau in Paris Masters Andy Murray has moved to within one win of qualifying for the World Tour Finals with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Julien Benneteau at the Paris Masters. The Scot, 27, who is currently in fifth place to qualify for November’s finals, outclassed his French opponent in 71 minutes to reach the third round. He needs to reach the quarter-finals in France to secure his place in London. The Scot, who has won three titles in five weeks, faced Grigor Dimitrov - who beat Murray at Wimbledon – which was played after we went to print. Bulgarian Dimitrov, who also has a chance to qualify for the season-ending tournament, thrashed Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas 6-0 6-3. “I put in a lot of hard work the last few weeks, played a lot of tough, long matches,” said Murray.

“If I get in to London I deserve to be there, because it’s your results across the whole year. My results in most of the tournaments this year, most of the big tournaments, have been good enough to be in the top eight.

“They have neglected their duty to shareholders, fans and the club itself. Their cowardly act now means we are likely to see Mr Ashley gain long term control of the club’s remaining commercial income without

The FAI approached the Scottish Fooball Association to request an increased ticket allocation to next month’s Euro 2016 qualifier between Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. The FAI were given the minimum allocation permissible under UEFA rules, 5 % (3209 tickets), however the SFA have refused the request, with an SFA spokesman saying “Given the demand for tickets from Scotland supporters, we were unable to increase The Republic of Ireland’s away allocation”.

“I have won more matches than most of the players in the slams, maybe one or two other guys, Roger and Novak might be the only ones to have won more.” Murray opened with an emphatic love hold and was gifted an immediate break by three Benneteau double faults.

The FAI were not impressed by the denial, accusing the SFA of forcing Irish fans to purchase tickets for the home section, a spokesman said “It is particularly disappointing the SFA are continuing to sell tickets on their website after they told us the match was sold out. Many of these tickets are now being taken up by Irish fans out of desperation.”

The world number eight cruised to 4-1, having dropped only one point on his own serve, and promptly wrapped up the set. Murray broke serve again in the first game of the second set and, although the world number 28 broke his serve in the sixth game, he completed victory with a hold to love.

having to actually invest a penny. “The board has, through a policy of inaction and cooperation with Sandy Easdale’s shareholder group, allowed a situation to develop where corporate vultures are grabbing what assets they can. There is no long term plan. There is no investment. We simply limp from one short term fix to another, each time giving away more of the family silver, despite a clear alternative being available. “Sandy Easdale’s pronouncement that the Plc board ‘did their duty and their due diligence accordingly’ and have

done ‘what’s in the best interests of the fans, the club and the shareholders’ is the type of laughable nonsense we have come to expect from him. Mr Easdale certainly got what he wanted which was the retention of his seat in the director’s box and his club tie. “The club and the fans have been sold down the river and this is another kick in the teeth for both them and the reputable shareholders still involved at Rangers. Mr Easdale, rather than disingenuous statements, should explain to fans why he actively blocked a £16m investment that could have taken the club forward.

@Ayrshire_News

“It is now a matter of individual conscience for fans if they wish to continue to fund the corporate pillaging of our football club. They should be under no illusions however that every time they purchase a single item in either Sports Direct or our club shops, they are paying for the privilege of allowing Mike Ashley to strengthen his grip on our commercial operations in a move which could hamstring the club for a generation. “Also for the remainder of this season, every match ticket they buy will be used to pay Mr Ashley back the money he has lent for control of our club. Effectively they will be paying him

for the privilege of his power grab.” Rangers supporters showed their disapproval of Ashley’s strengthening of his position at Ibrox by boycotting their recent cup quarter final match against Premier League St Johnstone; only 13,023 turning up to what was arguably their most crucial game of the season. Rangers progressed to the Semi- Finals with a 1-0 win thanks to a late Lewis Macleod goal, where they could face Aberdeen, Dundee United or a potential Old Firm match against Celtic.

Hearts ARE first Scottish club to adopt living wage Hearts have implemented “living wage” at the club, becoming the first in Scotland to make such a commitment. The move will include staff employed on a part-time and contract basis. Hearts owner Ann Budge told the Edinburgh club’s website: “We believe it is entirely in keeping with the values we hold dear as a club.” The living wage differs from the national minimum wage, which is set and imposed by the UK government, in that it is an hourly rate set independently, updated annually and calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK. At present, the living wage is £7.65 an hour, while the minimum wage for over-21s is £6.50. Hearts owner Ann Budge added:

“Having reviewed the salary structure across all areas of the club, we propose to implement the nationallyapproved Living Wage, across all staff, including part-time and contract workers.” Semi-professional FC United of Manchester, who play in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, were the first football club in Britain to work with the Living Wage Foundation, which promotes the living wage.

propose to implement the nationallyapproved living wage, across all staff, including part-time and contract workers,” said Budge.

“We have taken steps to register with the Living Wage Foundation, thereby formalising our commitment.

A spokeswoman for the foundation welcomed the interest from a club of Hearts’ size and described it as “really exciting for Scotland and the UK”.

“We believe we will be the first football club in Scotland to sign up for this.” Budge is the sole director of BIDCO 1874, a consortium that bought Hearts and took the club out of administration this summer. She also said Hearts have begun a feasibility study into the possibility of creating a museum within Tynecastle Stadium.

Hearts’ decision to adopt the living wage for their workforce was taken at the Scottish Championship leaders’ October board meeting. “Having reviewed the salary structure across all areas of the club, we

Budge said, however, that the club has been focusing on improving the “match-day experience” by updating stadium facilities and hospitality offerings, as well as re-launching the club website.

Scottish Disability Sport Starts the Search for Scotland’s Next Generation of Para Sport Stars Following the unprecedented success of Glasgow 2014’s para sport programme, Scottish Disability Sport (SDS), is teaming up with some of Scotland’s most inspiring para athletes to find the next generation of sporting stars.

The agency, which is the official sporting body for people of all ages and abilities with a physical, sensory or learning disability, is urging everyone to give sport a go, whatever their disability, because they could have what it takes to go all the way at the next Paralympic or Commonwealth Games. The nationwide drive to unearth the next generation of disabled sport stars is being fronted by some of the 22 ‘Team Scotland’ para athletes who competed at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow across a wide range of sports – with more athletes, personal bests and medals won (seven in total) than ever before. Gavin Macleod, Chief Executive Officer of Scottish

Disability Sport wants to ensure that the excitement and momentum of 2014 is channelled into future success for new generations of para athletes in Scotland. He commented: ‘Sport is an incredible and empowering outlet for people no matter what level of ability or impairment they have. We want to ensure as many people as possible can participate in their chosen sport, but also provide the support and training for those with real talent and commitment to go all the way to the podium at the world’s top sporting occasions. ‘Glasgow 2014 demonstrated just how much sporting skill and ambition there is amongst Scotland’s disabled communities and we want to take a message of encouragement and inspiration to give sport a go – across all sports, age groups and parts of the country. The SDS Branch and Regional Manager network with their coaches, training and events has uncovered some of Scotland’s leading para sports stars, many of whom had no idea of their talent and potential at the beginning of their sporting

journey. So we’d urge everyone to come along to one of our development days, ask at their local sports club or

check out our website for information and ideas about how to get involved.’ www.scottishdisabilitysport.com

ASHLEY ENTERS THE ARENA

Conor Gildea After the Rangers board turned down the £16 million package on offer from Dave King and accepting a £2m emergency loan from Mike Ashley, it now seems inevitable that Ashley will eventually gain full control of the Ibrox club. Having seen Graham Wallace and Philip Nash out the door, and with the arrivals of Derek Llambias and Barry Leach, both in consultancy roles,

Ashley is slowly but surely stamping his authority at Rangers. The reason for the ‘consultancy roles’ is that Ashley could fall foul of the agreement he put in place with the Scottish Football Association in 2012 if either Llambias or Leach were to be placed on the board. The agreement was designed to limit his influence at Ibrox, it stipulated that he can acquire no more than 10% of the clubs shares whilst still being at the helm at Newcastle. Following the recent share purchase and loan given to Rangers, the SFA have written to the club to seek clarification on Ashley’s intentions

However, despite seeming to be the saviour and staving off what was rumoured to be an impeding administration, Ashley’s increase in shares at the club (now 8.92%) and the £2 million emergency loan, the fans reaction was not all positive. They have been left bemused as to why the board would turn down a £16 million package from King, for the £2 million loan on offer from Ashley , many fans see Ashley as using the club for his own gain – a path the Ibrox faithful have seen before. Having already acquired the naming rights to Ibrox stadium, for just £1, fans have been left wondering exactly what his next step is.

The Rangers Union of Fans released the following statement this week:“The Rangers support and the club itself has once again been betrayed by those tasked with overseeing the health and success of our great football club. “The decision by the non-executive directors of the Plc board, Mr Somers, Mr James Easdale and Mr Norman Crighton, to effectively hand control of the club to Mike Ashley in return for a £2m, short term loan, is an absolute disgrace. They have acted in a cowardly way and have been bullied by Mike Ashley and Sandy Easdale into giving them precisely what they

want with no regard for the club. “The club was at a crossroads. The board had to decide whether to take us down the route of a long term, £16m, sustainable investment and the start of a process where fans could once again trust those tasked with nursing Rangers back to health. Instead they have handed Mike Ashley control of the boardroom for a pittance which will now have to be repaid out of the pockets of the dwindling number of Rangers fans who still choose to support this regime financially.
