Glasgow remembers Clutha dead
during tragedy’s first anniversary Ross Swanson People from around the city of Glasgow came together last week to remember the victims of the Clutha helicopter crash tragedy, which happened one year ago. A service was held at Glasgow Cathedral on Saturday to mark the first anniversary of the disaster, which saw a Police Scotland helicopter loose control and crash into the roof of the busy clydeside Clutha pub, killing ten people. Close friends and families of those who died were joined by hundreds of other mourners at the afternoon service. Newly appointed First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, was also in attendance and led the congregation in prayer. Six people inside the pub - Robert Jenkins, 61, Mark O’Prey, 44, Colin Gibson, 33, John McGarrigle, 57, Gary Arthur, 48, and Samuel McGhee, 56 - died after the tragic event on November 29, 2013. Joe Cusker, 59, was pulled from the wreckage alive, but died in hospital 13 days later. The Eurocopter EC 135 pilot, David Traill, and his passengers, police officers Kirsty Nelis and Tony Collins, also lost their lives as a result of the accident. In total, 32 people were taken to hospitals across the city for treatment. Representatives from police and Scottish Fire and Rescue services, who worked alongside ambulance crews on the night of the crash, were still said to be distraught about the terrible events on that night.
Police Scotland Chief Constable Sir Stephen House said: “My thoughts, and the thoughts of all officers and staff, are with the families of the ten people who lost their lives on November 29 in the Clutha Vaults Bar. “I want to recognise the support shown in the past twelve months to all those affected by the events of that Friday night in November which has come not only from the people of Glasgow but communities well beyond.
“They were seven people who simply went out to enjoy the company of friends; and three members of the police air support team working to protect the public” “The first anniversary of the disaster is a milestone which will evoke many thoughts, memories and feelings amongst those who lost loved ones, colleagues or friends, the many ordinary citizens and volunteers who saw events unfold and who assisted in the immediate aftermath, and the emergency service crews who carried out an unprecedented rescue and recovery operation.” Chief Officer Alasdair Hay, of Scottish Fire and Rescue, said: “Our thoughts at this time are very much with the families and friends of those lost in this tragedy as well as those who survived. Glasgow remembers Clutha dead during tragedy’s first anniversary Ross Swanson Cont. from page 1.
“For people who have suffered bereavement or injuries the emotional, physical and psychological trauma remain powerful even a year on.
“This anniversary is a moment to express our support for those whose lives were changed forever and to pause and remember those who never came home. “They were seven people who simply went out to enjoy the company of
friends; and three members of the police air support team working to protect the public. It’s important we remember them all.” Reverend Neil Galbraith, the Church of Scotland’s Chaplain to Police Scotland, was on the scene last year at the pub, trying to deal with the aftermath of the tragedy. He remembers the anguish of the night, as well as the rallying public who arrived to help. “I felt both sick and strong at the same time because there was a job to do. I was part of the team which would be going through all the emotions to bring hope to this desperation situation. “In the hours which followed being right at the heart of the site, the second part of the emotional see-saw appeared from the shock of the first. The dignity, the passion, the drive of the rescuers; the bravery of the relief
chopper crew who were now the frontline trauma team; the firefighters who like ants were climbing over the rubble and roof to get to the fallen; the quiet dignity of the crowds who gathered at the top of the street and quietly watched, and perhaps prayed. “The heart of Glasgow stepped up to the mark and generosity of spirit, and dignity shone through. There was no heroes that weekend but a city of heroes who took the families of this terrible night to their hearts, who showed the greatest respect to the rescue workers, and who in the weeks to come remembered, mourned and loved the families, who lost so much, and the police crew and the customers of the Clutha who were stolen from us. “In our grief we found strength. In our strength we were Glaswegians.”
A spokesperson for Bond Aviation Group, whose civilian pilot died in the fatal crash, also said: “Our thoughts remain with those who died that night, those who were injured and their families and friends. Nothing can compensate for the loss of a loved one, but we continue to work with the representatives of those affected with the aim of resolving all claims as swiftly as possible. We also continue to work with the Air Accident Investigations Branch as it conducts its investigation.” In February, an analysis of the crash found that the helicopter suffered a double engine failure caused by a fuel supply problem, which led to a loss of power. The final report into the tragic crash is expected to be published by the middle of next year, air accident
investigators have said. The pub’s owner, Alan Crossan, launched the Clutha Trust charity last week on the eve of the anniversary. The organisation aims to help disadvantaged youths throughout the city. Their first fund-raising event was held at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballrooms. The gig saw local favourites like Sandy Thom and Bombskare, among others, raise money for the worthy venture. Following its success, Mr Crossan has said that plans for more shows are already underway and will be announced shortly. Plans to rebuild the Clutha Bar are also underway, with the owner saying that work should begin sometime in 2015.
University chiefs’ marking boycott over pensions row suspended Emer O’Toole An assessment boycott that would have seen thousands of university students’ work go unmarked has been delayed. The boycott, led by University and Colleges Union (UCU), began on 6 November and was triggered after news emerged of threats to lecturers’ pensions, with their predicted pensions set to reduce drastically.
As a result of this, teaching staff who supported the boycott continued to give lectures, seminars and all other support to students, but did not mark
any coursework or exams.
Releasing a joint statement, UCU and Universities UK (UUK) stated that they have arranged further talks, scheduled for 15 January, and the boycott will be suspended until then.
The agreement will mean staff who have already taken part in industrial action over the Universities Superannuation Scheme- the pension scheme for staff at universities across the UK-will not have their pay docked, as was threatened by many universities. Academics will be expected, in return, to catch up on marking within a reasonable period of time.

The row escalated after UUK’s consultation of the proposed reforms was labelled as

Protest to save Royal Concert Hall Steps Two young Glasgow citizens are hosting a protest this week to stop the proposed removal of Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall’s steps, as part of the council’s £390 million plan to regenerate the city’s Buchanan Quarter.
Gigantic swan swoops in as council’s latest park sculpture
The protest will take place on December 6 at 2pm, following the success of their ‘Save the Steps’ petition which has already received a total of 12, 152 of 15,000 signatures.
Stephen Eve and Ben Bookless launched their petition last month to raise awareness of the cultural importance of the steps, and stop the plan to replace them with a glass atrium. Eve, 24, said: “The steps have become part of everyday life for many Glaswegians, who meet friends there or sit with their lunch and take in the views over Buchanan Street.” The steps, which are situated on the top of Buchanan Street behind the Donald Dewar statue, have been part of the Concert Hall since it opened in 1990.
an “iconic place” for rallies and protests, adding that the steps were used by both sides in the recent independence referendum. He continued: “It has been called ‘Glasgow’s Hall for Glasgow’s people’ by the city’s former Lord Provost, so I think that Glasgow’s people should have a say in the future of these iconic steps.” The Scottish Government has backed the plans by Glasgow City Council to raise the funds for this scheme through Tax Incremental Financing. This permits cash to be borrowed against projected rises in business rates.

A popular late-night bar in Glasgow’s city centre was burgled this week – reportedly having a five figure sum stolen in the process.
Councillor Archie Graham, the executive member for the Commonwealth Games, joined Robert and the pupils for the unveiling. He said: “This is another fantastic piece of work and illustrates the park’s links with Europe, as well as our own.
It is one of twelve wooden sculptures being installed as part of the council’s legacy initiative, which centres on twinning schools and parks in the city with countries of the Commonwealth.
“They are also becoming more involved with their city’s parks and being involved in the sculpture itself gives pupils a sense of ownership and pride.”
Box owner, Steven McColm, said: “The pub was robbed of a five figure sum on Monday morning at 6.45am. Obviously everyone here is absolutely devastated, especially at this time of year, and we really hope the guy is found. We have an image of the man on our CCTV, The police and CID are currently investigating the situation.”
The final feature - a palm tree - is due to be unveiled in Linn Park soon.
With the festive period usually bringing an increase in reported break-ins each year, Police Scotland have launched
The whooper swan marks Hogganfield’s twinning with Europe and has been placed within the formal bed at the entrance to the park on Cumbernauld Road.
Box on Sauchiehall Street was broken into early on Monday 1 December.
“This legacy project is helping Glasgow’s young people learn more about the Commonwealth, how people throughout the Commonwealth live and how our actions affect the environment.
The whooper swan is the eleventh sculpture to be installed. Last month, the council unveiled an equally large snow leopard in Springburn Park as part of the scheme.

Late-night bar robbed Teenager hit twice in in early hours burglary ‘attempted murder’
Glasgow City Council this week unveiled the latest sculpture in their legacy initiative program – a huge whooper swan. With a full wing span of 4.5 meters and weighing almost 2.5 tons, the giant swan is the latest creation, skilfully carved from recycled oak timber, by Glasgow sculptor Robert Coia - with the help of East end school pupils at Sunnyside Primary.

A Glasgow teenager was left in a critical condition this week after being hit twice by the same car ina “deliberate” attack. The 18-year-old victim was walking in in the city’s East end with two friends, when a small black car struck him at about 8pm on Sunday November 30. Police Scotland say that a male passenger then exited the car and briefly argued with the group before retuning to the vehicle, which drove off. The car then returned shortly afterwards and deliberately struck the victim. Police are treating the incident, which took place in Inveresk Street, Carntyne, as attempted murder.

Recorded crime reaches FORTY year low Ross Swanson
Recorded crime in Scotland has reached a record 40 year low, according to recently publishedofficial statistics. The government report, released late last week, shows that levels of reported crime are at their lowest since 1974. Commenting on the figures, Cabinet Secretary designate for Justice Michael Matheson said: “Recorded crime has fallen for the seventh year in a row and is now at its lowest level for 40 years, violent crime is down 10 per cent and crimes of handling an offensive weapon (including knives) have reduced by 62 per cent since 2006-07. “These strong statistics are backed by over 1,000 extra police officers since 2007, protecting the public and keeping communities safe. It is clear that I am inheriting a strong record of achievement in justice which I am keen to build on in the weeks and months to come. “We recognise that there is still work to
do, the figures show an increase in sex crimes last year. Police Scotland have made clear that around half of the increase is due to a rise in historic reporting and may also be down to more victims of current crimes coming forward. We want victims to have

confidence to report these crimes.
The report shows that levels of crime have dropped by 1% since Police Scotland formed as a result of a merger between territorial forces in April 2013.
The Scottish Government, police and prosecutors take the investigation and prosecution of these traumatic crimes extremely seriously, which is why we have strengthened the law around sex crimes by bringing in the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009. “We are giving £3.6 million funding to support victims of rape from 2012-15. Meanwhile the new national police service has improved investigation techniques, setting up a new National Rape Taskforce which treats rape as seriously as murder. It is also reassuring to see the best clear-up rate for these crimes in a decade. “Crimes of death by dangerous and careless driving are also up on last year which should serve as a warning for those drivers who continue to take risks
“Measures to lower the drink drive limit come into force next month and will help make our roads safer and save lives.”
However the statistics also show that reported rapes have increased by 24%. Police Scotland Chief Constable Sir Stephen House welcomed the report’s overall results. He said: “The past two years has seen the biggest structural change to how policing is delivered in more than a generation. These figures demonstrate that our performance has remained strong throughout that period of unprecedented transition, the number of people becoming victims of crimecontinues to fall and that those who commit crime are more likely than ever to be caught. “Policing in Scotland is tuned in to what the communities we serve tell us. Their
greatest concerns across all 14 territorial policing divisions are what drive our priorities, combined with sharper intelligence and more effective ways of preventing crime and detecting offenders means we can be confident our communities are safer. “That does not mean we can ever be complacent. We can always do more to enhance what we do and how we do it.
criminal justice partners to drive further improvements in the safety and security of the communities in which we live.” Recorded crime in Glasgow fell by 4% but it remains Scotland’s crime capital with 852 crimes per 100,000 people, compared with a national average of 508 crimes per head.
“We have focused on key areas like tackling anti-social behaviour, domestic abuse and rape and sexual crime. We are working hard to tackle acquisitive crime and road safety so we keep people safe on our roads.

More than 15,000 bottles of Jameson, Jack Daniels and Gin have been stolen after an armed hold up at a Dublin warehouse. The robbery happened in the middle of the afternoon at the Parkwest industrial Estate in Ballyfermot when two men entered a warehouse armed with iron bars.
The stolen alcohol was loaded onto two 40ft trucks which left Parkwest about an hour after the raid began. Gardaí say they believe the stolen alcohol will be offered for sale in the run up to Christmas, possibly in bars around the country or even at Christmas markets, and are appealing for members of the public who have been offered any spirits from nonlicenced suppliers to come forward.
At least five armed thieves, in two trucks, made-off with 2,580 cases of Jameson, cases of Bombay Sapphire gin and cases of Jack Daniels whiskey in a robbery on 14 November. They threatened two employees and forced them to open the warehouse loading bay. At least three more men arrived and the employees were tied up.

Australian cricketer dies after freak accident David Gildea Australian Cricketer Phil Hughes sadly died last week. Hughes was on 67 not out batting for South Australia, when he collapsed face first on the ground after being hit by a bouncer from 22-year-old Sean Abbott during a Sheffield Shield game against New South Wales. He had been wearing a protective helmet, but was struck at the top of the neck, which caused the fatal injury. Oval medics attempted CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation at the ground before being taking him to St Vincent’s Hospital. He underwent a 90 minute operation to relieve pressure on his brain. However, two days later he sadly passed away. Team doctor Peter Brukner confirmed the news in a statement. He said: “It is my sad duty to inform you that a short time ago Phillip Hughes passed

Barrowlands set to host huge charity event for SAVI kids Ross Swanson
Some of Glasgow’s best upand-coming acts are preparing to hit the stage at the city’s famous Barrowland Ballroom this Christmas - all in the name of raising awareness for a worthy cause. The fourth annual Savifest takes place on December 13 at the iconic music hall. The Sexual Assault Victims Initiative (SAVI) receive no government funding and are completely reliant on public donations to continue operating. Organisers are hoping the event will help to keep the charity open. Gig co-ordinator, Tony Gaughan, has booked some of the city’s finest artists for this year’s lineup, including local favourites Esperanza and Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5. The booker has helped organise the one-day festivals since becoming involved with the East Kilbride charity two years ago. He said: “I went up to visit them and saw that they were having real difficulty getting funds, so I wanted to do something. “The fact that they help to support young kids, who are in horrible situations that are clearly unacceptable, meant that I wanted to try and help where I could. I saw it right away as something I wanted to get involved with. “I really want to ensure that this charity continues.” Filling the 2,000 capacity ballroom is no easy feat, but after calling a few friends Tony is confident they can pull it off. He added: “There’s no point in booking bands for the Barrowlands if they can only pull in 20 people, so I knew exactly who to ask this year. “I wanted to make sure that this was actually going to be of benefit to the charity and keeping it running for the next year at least.” David “The Dijancer” Blair from Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 said: “As soon as we found out about it we over the moon! The Barras is such an iconic world famous venue that it’s
the ultimate ambition for any Glasgow band to play it. The fact that we can help out such a worthy cause whilst fulfilling a lifetime’s ambition is an absolute honour and very humbling.” SAVI founder, Annmarie Campbell, started the charity after a family member was the victim of a sexual assault and she was unable to find any organisations able to help under 16s who were suffering from abuse. She said: “I just presumed that something was out there, but there was nothing. It was shocking. So I started SAVI from there. “The Savifest is all about raising awareness, as well as the music. We want to get the message out to kids that ‘you’re not alone,’ and to let them know that there are people out there who they can talk to. “All the money goes straight into the charity. Nobody takes anything, they all offer their services atcost or even free.” The big event has grown since it’s humble beginnings four years ago, and is now one of the most highly anticipated gigs of the festive season. Annemarie explains: “It was really the kid’s idea. Rather than having fund-raisers for the adults, they wanted something they could get involved in.

ThinxBig Think Big for Glasgow Popular English ‘plus size’ retailers ThinxBig have just opened their first store in Scotland – and decided Glasgow was a perfect place to start.
The Blackpool-based company supply extra large ‘bigman’ clothing such as large waist jeans and king-size T-Shirts (up to 8XL) for customers who struggle to find clothes that fit comfortably in most shops. The new store, in Glagow’s East end Tollcross area, opened late last month. Fashionable named brands on sale include: Life & Limb, FuBu, Ben Sherman, Rockford and many more. ThinxBig also import specialised plussized clothing from the US, which is available in-store and on the company’s website.
The company’s spokesman, Jim Ali, said: “We decided to open in Glasgow around a year ago.
service, which we offer along with our up-to-date – and reasonably priced fashion.
Having had an enormous amount of feedback from our customers coming down to Blackpool, they told us there were no shops like ours in Scotland. A lot of people said it was hard from them to buy online as other company’s would frequently let them down on quality, sizing & price. It became clear to us Scotland needed a shop like ours.”
“We discovered a high percentage of our customers were either disabled or had other medical problems, and we try to help how we can. Sometimes it’s more like a social meeting place than a shop. We always try to make every one as comfortable as possible.
“It will be our policy to employ local people,” he continued, “we hope to help revive this part of Tollcross and hopefully encourage other shops to open in the area. “Our current visitors from Scotland to our Blackpool store have been amazed at our ‘old fashioned’ style of friendly

discounts on purchases. Card holders will also be offered exclusive deals on some items, well below retail price.
“I hope we will bring our type of humour and knowledge of plus-sized men’s fashion to Scotland. It’s important to us that our customers look upon us as friends – not a money grabbing corporate company.” ThinxBig say they hope to open more stores across Scotland in the future, and will also be launching a loyalty card where points can be redeemed for

“One of our volunteers at the time joked ‘Oh well, if we’re having a gig, why don’t we just have it at the Barrowlands,’ which we all just laughed at. But we did end up phoning them, and they’ve been absolutely brilliant about it ever since.”
We also carry a lot of accessories, ties, belts, braces, bags cuff links, you name it we’ve got it!
Annmarie says that, in the current financial climate, raising funds has become so difficult that the festival is crucial to the charity’s survival.
“A great collection of smart, trendy clothes for all ages”
She added: “If we can even get 1,200 people in that hall then we’ll be able to keep doing what we’re doing for another year.” SAVI can be contacted at any time on 07847625030 where Annmarie, or a member of her experienced team, will be able to give advice and help to victims of sexual abuse.

Meals on trolley wheels David Gildea
Last weekend saw Tesco host a UK-wide food collection in partnership with The Trussell Trust and FareShare. Part of this included a trolley dash in all participating Tesco’s with the aforementioned charities as beneficiaries. However in the North-West of the City, Greater Maryhill Food Bank were also included. Tesco on Maryhill Road have been supporters of GMFB for a long time now, and saw this as the perfect opportunity to lend a helping hand. Better service manager Emma
Stewart, was in charge of filling the trolley. However she was assisted by professional trolley racing driver, and store manager, Russell Houston. For eight minutes and seven seconds the duo darted around the store collecting the goods on the shopping list. They crossed the finish line with the shopping list complete and the trolley full. This one followed the two full trolleys full of donations the store handed over the previous day. Nichola McLaughlin, who is a project assistant at GMFB spoke of the help they get from Tesco, telling us that with the Food bank in such close proximity, Tesco
are very keen to help out when they can and that it reaffirms the Community feel. Nichola went on to tell us about the Greater Maryhill Food Bank Christmas Party on December 11th. She said: “Last year we gave presents out to just over 650 children and this year we are aiming for well over one thousand.” Tesco among many other businesses throughout the city are collecting toys on behalf of GMFB to help them reach their goal. For more information on Greater Maryhill Food Bank, stop by www.greatermaryhillfoodbank. co.uk or find them on Facebook.

Dads’ get ready to have some fun. Dads Rock, the charity which runs free playgroups fordads (male carers) and children, has joined with PEEK Project to launch Glasgow’s first freeweekly playgroup in the East of the city.
Dads Rock was set up by two dads in Edinburgh in 2012, as they found that dads and malecarers can often be excluded or marginalised from other early-years settings. The Edinburghplaygroups are based in the north and south of the city, with over 260 families coming alongeach week.
The Glasgow playgroup runs each Saturday, from 11am at the Calton Heritage and LearningCentre.
Organisers’ say that the playgroups aim to be a fun and positive place for dads and childrento come and play and learn together. They give dads and
their children invaluable oneonone time and there is free play, instruments, a healthy snack, story and song time. Outings and events are planned for throughout the year. Co-founder, Thomas Lynch, said: “It’s amazing to be able to come to Glasgow, to play together and support dads and families. Both charities say they’re delighted to be able to deliver similar playgroups for children and their parents now in Glasgow’s East End.

I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! - The Final
Channel 4 – Thursday 11 December - 8.30pm Official synopsis: ‘The girls decide to re-enact their highschool proms with their current partners, so the gang recreate the whole event on the roof of the apartment building, but Sheldon feels under too much pressure.’ Sounds like another hilarious outing for the oddball group of friends and their significant others. Awkward at the best of times as they are, the gang are likely going to suffer when trying to cope with the romantic pressures that traditionally come with American high-school prom. Expect plenty of cringe-filled moments mixed with the usual blend of witty humour. Fans will be in for a treat this week as a major loose end will finally be tied – and it won’t be one to miss. As revealed way back in 2009’s season three episode ‘The Adhesive Duck Deficiency’, Howard lost his virginity to his second cousin Jeanie. Howard famously made the unwitting revelation when he, Leonard and Raj camped out in the desert and ate ‘cookies’ from some Grateful Dead fans. Big Bang fans will finally be able to watch the uncomfortable reunion unfold in full. Guest stars Kara Luiz.
Doctor Who The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe BBC1 – Saturday 6 December – 7pm Official synopsis: ‘The Time Lord crash-lands on Earth during the Second World War, where he tries to make sure two unfortunate evacuees and their mother have the best Christmas ever. He transports them to a magical land dominated by an enchanted forest - but that is when their troubles really begin. Claire Skinner, Bill Bailey, Arabella Weir and Alexander Armstrong join Matt Smith in the 2011 festive special, inspired by CS Lewis’s Narnia stories.’ Yes, it’s a repeat, but it’s a great one. 2011’s wonderful Christmas Doctor Who special will get you in the yuletide spirit, and make you remember just how fantastic the Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor truly was. If you ever watched The Chronicles of Narnia series and thought it was missing something, it was probably a Tardis. The festive one-off leaves Andrew Adamson’s films standing. Plus, Bill Bailey’s in it – when is he not funny? Relax on the couch with the kids and enjoy the feature -length episode, perfectly timed to wet your appitite for Peter Capaldi’s first festive special on Christmas Day, later in the month. Guest stars Outnumbered’s Claire Skinner.
Like the fast action relief you get from taking pain-killers when suffering from toothache, it’s wonderful to know that – eventually – all unpleasant experiences do end. Mercifully that’s the case this week as the 14th series (Yes, really) of I’m a Celebrity... stumbles towards it’s conclusion once again. No doubt someone will have to eat some poor animals severed testicles or something equally disgusting in the name of ‘entertainment’, before someone you’ve never heard of before gets paid some money for having put up with the awful mistreatment for 3 weeks. Forget the ‘celebrity’ bit, just get me out of here. I know this is the ‘Best of TV’, I just wanted to a chance to have a moan. Adam Sandler flop I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry is on afterwards. The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies 12th December 2014 Starring Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Billy Connolly, Orlando Bloom. Peter Jackson’s brilliant Hobbit trilogy reaches its glorious climax with an epic showdown to end them all! Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and the dwarves failed in their plan to kill Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) in his Lonely Mountain lair. Now they watch helplessly as the dragon flies off to rain fiery vengeance on Laketown. Only Bard (Luke Evans) can stop the enraged beast now, using the last remaining dragon-slaying black arrow. Gandalf (Ian McKellen), meanwhile, has been imprisoned at Dol Guldor by the Necromancer. The stage is set for the stunning climactic battle for Smaug’s hoard, to which Peter Jackson’s astonishing second Middle-earth trilogy has been building. This sees goblins and wargs take on the dwarves, elves, men and giant eagles in one almighty conflict. And that’s before you take into account the legions of orcs unleashed by the Necromancer! It’s a suitably dazzling conclusion to one of the alltime great fantasy trilogies.

Proclaimers bassist Garry John Kane was introduced to the heights of ‘making it’ in the music business, albeit vicariously, as a teenager back in 1987 when his older brothers Pat and Greg, better known as Glasgow pop duo Hue and Cry, hit the charts with the catchy ‘Labour of Love’. “When I was 16 or 17 they were on Top of the Pops,” he begins, “It was a really weird experience to see my brothers on there – but uplifting y’know?” Being only a couple of years younger, the soulful pair’s little brother Garry was already embarking towards his own musical movements.
It’s a trip
Garry John Kane
“I wasn’t that good on the guitar,” confesses Gary, “so my mates gave me the bass. Of course, I soon found out that bass is the most important instrument in the band - of course it is,” he says with a smirk. With his chosen instrument decided, the youngest of the Kane brothers set out to follow Pat and Greg in a successful music career of his own. “I was working for British Rail in ‘97, and Ken and Dave McCluskey from The Bluebells suddenly offered me a gig to do a UK tour with them. You sort of say to yourself ‘You know what? This is my only chance to be a proper musician and get paid for it.’ So I left my job in a big bold movement and everyone around me said ‘What are you doing? You’re making good money, what are you leaving your job for?,’ and I said, ‘Because this is what I want to do.’ Back then, before the internet, that was a big risk.”
Garry explains that the initial tour got him heavily involved in Glasgow’s famous indie scene, and eventually led to him going on a world tour with the legendary Marianne Faithfull. “That was an eye opener,” he says matter-of-factly, “We stayed in the best hotels and were pretty much treated like kings. I’d never lived like that at all. It was a fantastic experience.” “She was great,” says Garry fondly, “She was like your favourite Auntie.” “She was still always up for a party y’know? These ‘60s artists never stop partying really,” he says laughing. “It was just a great time. Of course, after I got home, I thought I was a rockstar God. I kinda was in my own mind,” says Garry jokingly, “But that soon passed.” After returning to Scotland Garry was soon approached by talented twins, The Proclaimers, who were getting back together after an eight year hiatus, and suddenly found themselves short of a bass player. “I was meant to cover the gig for six or seven months, but it just continued. Twelve years, and five studio albums later, I’m still here. “I just kind of fell into it to be honest. I think I just smiled at the right time.” Garry explains how he found the best way to get by in the notoriously competitive, cut-throat music scene – he had watched his older brothers, and learned from their mistakes. “I was just nice to everyone,” he says knowingly, “I’m not saying they weren’t exactly, but I think it made things easier for myself. It wasn’t as busy a time as it was for them too, so maybe I got lucky finding my place when I did.
“I missed out on the excess of the ‘80s though, that would have been some laugh. Mind you, I’d have spent all my money too.”
really. If you just do the big gigs you’ll end up disappearing quite quickly. Sometimes you just need to get back to your roots and play.
When he’s not on tour around the world with The Proclaimers, Garry spends his time with his own band, the ska/soul/pop mash-up, Button Up.
“It doesn’t make a huge difference to me really anyway. As long as the place is full, whether it holds 50 people or thousands, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s filled and it’s hot and sweaty - then it feels like a big gig.”
“I love coming up with my own stuff. I just hum whatever I’m thinking. I became a songwriter from there really. I can’t say singer-songwriter because I can’t sing – but I can hum it. “Once I got the first song away, I suppose it all just became easier from there. It’s just my wee hobby really; walking around Glasgow with my headphones on, trying to figure out a decent tune.” Button Up becomes Garry’s main focus when the The Proclaimers take their regular breaks from touring and recording. However, the band took a brief deferral from their time off last year to become the first Scottish band ever to play, the then, brand new SSE Hydro venue. “It was terrifying,” says a wide-eyed Garry, “We were one of the first ever bands to play there and everything was new. The sound team hadn’t really figured everything out yet. On stage it sounded awful, we couldn’t hear much at all. We found out later it was fine in the crowd though. It went down really well.” The one-off show, last October, received high praise from both critics and fans alike. For Garry, it was a great experience, but just another in a long line of gigs. “The following week, I was playing in the bar of a hotel in Coatbridge to around 70 people,” he says humbly. “I think you’ve got to do a bit of both
Last October also saw the UK cinema release of Sunshine on Leith, and adaptation of the stage musical featuring select picks from The Proclaimers’ back catalogue. So did Garry & Co. get the chance to perform in front of the camera? “No, we were raging,” he says laughing, “We were on tour at the time they were filming. We met them all though, they were great fun. There’s this bit in the film when they wanted the live band playing and I thought ‘Right that’s it, I’m going on a diet, I’m doing this,’ but our dates just totally clashed.” “Roddy Hart and his band did it instead. They’re all good looking guys with lots of hair anyway so they’re probably better for being on screen. We’d have ended up looking like a middle-aged five-aside football team,” he says grinning. Despite not having the chance make an appearance in the film, Garry hopes it’s popularity around the world will open up opportunities to perform in countries he’s never been to before. However, he’s just as concerned with seeing the scene at home continue to grow unstifled. “If I had a few million pounds in the bank I’d sign some of these great local acts and say ‘There you go, you don’t have to work in Tesco anymore.’ They
work in jobs like that, not because they lack ambition, but because their ambition is music. There aren’t many junior doctors who would see being in a band as a viable career. It would be great to say to bands ‘There you go, there’s £20k go and develop your stuff,’ But those days are gone now – its the final product or nothing. “It’s really tough on bands now, and there’s no support anywhere really. “There’s no money in it at all now really. If you tell people in the pub that you’ve got a single out for 79p, and they can download it on their phone with the press of a button, most of them would rather buy a bag of crisps with that money. People are too used to getting it all for free now.” If it’s any consolation Garry, I’ve had the new Button Up album Beat Street (which is brilliant, go and buy it!) on repeat on Spotify the whole time writing this – that ought to get you at least a few bags of crisps for yourself. The Proclaimers are set to write and record a brand new studio album later this month, due out in May. Button Up’s Beat Street is available now from Button Up Records.
It’s really tough on bands now, and there’s no support anywhere really.

The Furious Barman is an anonymous source - and a complete malcontent. The views expressed are his own and do not necessarily represent the views of The Glasgow News. These people are annoying though, aren’t they?
Cheryl Cole Fernandez-Versini David Gildea
Cheryl Ann Fernandez-Versini, (formally Cole, formally Tweedy) or simply ‘Cheryl’ as she’s now known, entered in the top ten of the album charts earlier this month with the release of her fourth album Only Human. Despite having had more name changes than Prince, the Geordie pop sensation hasn’t lost any of her fame in the process. This month, her new track I Don’t Care became her fifth number one single – the second time she’s hit the top spot this year. The ‘does what it says on the tin’ name echoes the sentiment addressed to critics and haters alike in the lyrics – she really doesn’t care what you think. “Yeah, I mean I haven’t cared for a long time really,” says Cheryl bluntly,“You can’t live your life worrying about what other people think or say about you. Even if I do hope that people enjoy what I do, I can’t make that the sole focus of my life, because that would make you miserable.” It’s obvious that Cheryl’s sound has matured and developed somewhat since her last release, 2012’s A Million Lights. There is an unmistakeable Rn’B feeling all over the album. So is this the definitive ‘Cheryl sound’ then? “It’s the kind of music that I grew up listening to,” she says, “It’s who I’m
influenced by and enjoy. Obviously I’ve been in Girls Aloud for 10 years and pop has been a big part of my career and my life, so it’s important too. I wanted to include a little bit of everything: me, pop and hopeful messages, which I hope come through. “I’m sure subconsciously, from being young and listening to that style of music I was influenced a bit,” she continues, “But there wasn’t one thing I was listening to or focussing on. I just enjoy the songs and then write my own stuff. I don’t focus too much on trying to be anything specific. I just want it to be enjoyable for people to listen to.” Not wishing to tread water however, the pop icon says that the ability to reinvent herself constantly is key to creating good material. “I think keeping it interesting for yourself is important because if you aren’t into what you’re doing personally, you’re never going to interest your supporters” says Cheryl, “I think keeping an ear to the ground is one thing, but not being too heavily swayed by what is going on around you and just going with your guy instinct is even more important.” With more than a decade in the music industry under her belt, is the X-Factor judge looking into a management or production role for new up-andcoming acts? “I’m just concentrating on the here and now at the moment, because as we all know, you never know what can change in
the future. But, it is something I am interested in, yeah. It’s something I would love to look at in the future. But no, this year I’m just focusing on what is going on right now.” Obviously Cheryl will still be busy for the next month until the conclusion of this year’s X-Factor, but will we be seeing a national tour in support of the new album afterwards? “I hope so. That’s the next thing I need to discus with the management and with my team. Maybe after Christmas, when the craziness dies down, we will get into that. But I hope so, yes.” This series of The X Factor, the show’s 11th in total, has seen Cheryl return to the judges table after a four year hiatus. The singer had a successful three-year stint on the X Factor from 2008 to 2010, steering both Alexandra Burke and Joe McElderry to victory, before famously having a falling out with Simon Cowell. This time though, she says she’s prepared for whatever comes flying her way. “Yeah, I know what to expect this time around,” she confirms, “But I still always get really nervous and anxious for my contestants. More than anything else, it’s an adrenaline filled night on Saturdays and Sundays for the acts, so it’s a bit crazy. But yeah, I’ll enjoy it more this time because I know what to expect.” The X-Factor airs at 8pm on Saturday and Sunday evening on iTV1.
If I had it my way people would have to pass some sort of basic intelligence test before being allowed to enter a licensed premises. Being aged over 18 might mean you’re legally allowed to consume alcohol, but it doesn’t automatically ensure that you have the ability to order it without making yourself look like a complete prat. Here’s this week’s biggest irritant: A woman shuffled up to the bar and ordered two drinks: a vodka with cola and a vodka with lemonade. Now, anyone with even a modicum
of brain functionality will know that – regardless of vodka – cola is dark brown in colour, while lemonade is completely clear. Imagine my surprise then, when the customer asked “Which one is which?” when they were placed down in front of her. At first I thought she was joking about, but after staring into her blank eyes for a few seconds I realised she sadly wasn’t. I then had to point out both individually - as saying “That’s the cola” wasn’t enough for her to tackle the enigma I’d apparently inadvertently created. I’d dread to see this woman try and cross a road.

Last week the SECC played host to over 100 crafters and designers who showcased their creations at the Country Living Magazine Christmas Fair. Spanning over 3 days, it boasted a lively, welcoming atmosphere which either got visitors in the mood for Christmas, or sent a feeling of impending Jingle Hell up the spines of the few who choose to leave their shopping till the day before.
Stalls varied in price according to what the owner’s were selling, so although a number of one-off paintings and furniture were quite pricey, you were paying for quality and originality.
This year I was determined not to become the latter, and decided to get some shopping done early (for once). I was impressed with the spread the SECC put on – not only was it free entry, but it was brimming with creatives from around the country. Stalls ranged broadly from offering bespoke, handmade jewellery, Skyemade scented candles, crumbly homemade cakes, free cookery demonstrations and innovative interior design. There was a coffee corner dedicated to the exhausted shopper, and a craft and create space where visitors
Equally, there were a number of stalls offering reasonably priced, affordable items, in particular books and children’s items. Highlights for me included the quirky patchwork offerings of Parma Violet’s stall, young fashion entrepreneur’s Gibson and Birkbeck’s gorgeous animal print shirts, Rustique Interior’s unique, awe inspiring upholstery (chairs with landscapes on them: the new vehicle to Narnia), Scottish designer Susan Mc Gill’s eye-catching prints, and Kat Goldin’s helpful advice at her crocheting stall, where she was promoting her book. I entered on a budget and emerged, arms laden with bags. A successful start to the Christmas season, I would definitely recommend checking out local fairs in Glasgow over the coming weeks as a wee affordable alternative to the high street.

If one woman knows how to put on a concert, it’s London born Paloma Faith. With her eccentricity, stage presence, crowd interaction, topped off with a vocal range that just can’t be taught; a night of enjoyment was all but guaranteed. We were not disappointed. Before Paloma took to the stage at the Clyde auditorium, or as the locals call it – The Armadillo, Brett Dennen kicked the night off with a 30 minute set. Having interviewed Brett previously we knew what to expect, a laid back and quirky performance. His song writing is only surpassed by his voice. There was no big band, no big production, just Dennen and his guitar (plus one backing guitarist). In between songs such as “Ain’t no reason” and the brilliant “Comeback Kid”, he spoke of his time in Glasgow, having his C.D’s taken off him at customs, and his love of walking – especially in Glasgow. You might think that sounds bland, but it wasn’t, he spoke with an honesty and humour that you’d expect from a supporting artist of Paloma Faith, and vocals just as qualified. 9pm came, the lights flashed on and the stage was set ,enter The Soulstress and 90 minutes of a musical cocktail; ingredients – 70’s, R ‘n’ B, Soul and garnished with a splash of Disco. This was Paloma Faith’s first gig in Scotland to a seated audience. The Londoner admitted it was strange as normally the Glasgow Crowd are the biggest partiers. Not to be out-done by venue regulations the mischievous Ms Faith
said to the audience “I know it says on the tickets to remain seated, but let’s be honest Glasgow, there’s more of you than there is of security” that was noted by the crowd for later. This tour was to promote the re-release of Perfect Contradiction, updated with 5 additional tracks, and retitled “Perfect Contradiction – The Outsiders’ edition”. So there was no ‘New York’ or ‘Do you want the truth or something beautiful’ et al. However we were treated to the smash hit “Picking up the Pieces” which had a few heartbroken girls in the crowd reminiscing, but singing along with vigour. The entire venue was on its feet, men and women, singing along to “Other Woman”. Paloma then invited Brett back on to stage for a duet, with a beautiful rendition of Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love”. The musical chemistry they share shone through like a crazy diamond on this song. In true musical style the end of the night wasn’t over with the last song, there was the obligatory and much wanted encore. Back on stage, shoe-less, Paloma treated us to an energetic and brilliant cover of Tina Turners “River Deep, Mountain high” followed by her current smash “Changing”. Still full of energy, and with space in the lungs for one more song, she finished the night by pouring her soul in to the performance of the evening with “Just can’t rely on you”. At this point every person was on their feet, dancing and singing along like their lives depended on it, the only ones who weren’t standing at their seats dancing, were the 100 plus who remembered what Paloma said earlier, there was more of them than security. Queue them storming to the stage front for their own up close and personal gig, encouraged by Paloma of course!

Cyber Monday fails to top Black Friday sales Online retailers were likely disappointed this week after the highly anticipated ‘Cyber Monday’ failed to reach expectations following a hugely a successful weekend, which apparently left shoppers ‘stuffed’ of sales. Amazon UK said that despite recording sales of up to 64
items per second at one point in the day, Cyber Monday was unable to match recording breaking sales made during last week’s chaotic Black Friday madness. The company announced the event had been their busiest day on record, selling 5.5 million items throughout the
day. The web-based equivalent of it’s high street cousin, Cyber Monday originated in the US in 2005 after companies like eBay and Amazon noticed a swell in sales following the, already popular, Black Friday. The tradition
has become a big event in the UK in recent years, with retailers slashing their prices by up to 50-per-cent. Vice President of EU Retail at Amazon, Xavier Garmbois, said: “Ever since we introduced Black Friday to the UK in 2010, sales have increased year on year but
this year really has surpassed all of our expectations. The public’s appetite for Black Friday has been bigger than ever, kicking off the Christmas shopping period in earnest and establishing Black Friday as a fixture on the UK Christmas shopping calendar.”

FiveNightsat Freddy’s Available on Google Play Store and iOS App Store - £1.87
I need to go online and buy myself a protective phone case – a big thick padded one. I’ve dropped my phone countless times of course, but luckily I usually get away with a minor scuff or scratch. Phones are built to withstand a little punishment anyway. They are not, however, built to withstand me launching it across the room every time a psychotic animatronic stuffed bear
flashes up on the screen and scares the absolute bejesus out of me. This is something you’ll be doing a lot of when playing through Five Nights at Freddy’s. It’s terrifying. The popular jump scare-fest makes it’s long awaited debut on mobiles after becoming a cult smashhit on PC earlier in the year. The game sees you control a new employee at a popular theme
restaurant called Freddy’s. You’re tasked with guarding the diner’s animatronic animals. While they might entertain flocks of children every day, they become bloodthirsty killers when the restaurant is closed – and you’re the only person left in the building. The game uses careful audio cues to announce when the mechanical monsters are nearby, and about to maul you into a game-over screen.
The name of the game is exactly what you need to do – simply (well, not really) survive five levels of nights at Freddy’s restaurant without falling victim to the fuzzy horrors which lurk in the hallways. Your defence against Freddy and his murderous chums are two buttons that control a set of metal doors which seal you inside your control room, a pair of flickering hallway lights, and a CCTV system which
you must switch between to avoid being snuck up on. The

The plan has came about after the President has came under pressure to respond to the threat that the Islamic State poses without putting boots on the ground, so far the US has been tackling the Islamic State through the use of airstrikes, having to date carried out almost 200 raids against the extremists.

The new Vauxhall Viva, launching in Spring 2015 Vauxhall has revealed first official pictures of the new Viva city car that’s set to arrive in dealers from spring 2015. The new five-door Viva is Vauxhall’s entry-level model, replacing the ageing Agila, and will sit below the three-door Adam and Corsa supermini.
A crisp-looking design, Vauxhall says it can seat five people despite being less than 3.7 metres long. It will be powered by a range of petrol engines including the firm’s sweet-spinning new 1.0-litre threecylinder. The Viva will also offer a load-lightening ‘city’ button for the steering, anti-rollback hill start assist and park assist. Cruise control will be optional and the Viva is another small Vauxhall to offer big-car features of heated seats and steering wheel. It will even offer an optional lane departure warning system.

Vehicle of the week In this week’s vehicular review, we’ve been met with one of the most odd pieces in automotive history – an old wooden sleigh which can apparently travel at incredibly high speeds. The sleigh’s reclusive owner, Nick claims to have owned the land vehicle “for ages”, and says he rarely uses it. “It’s certainly not built for summer use,” says the jovial mystery man, “I only really take it out when the snow comes.” Despite it’s lack of visible power (only 9 reindeerpower), Nick claims he can get “pretty much everywhere” when he needs to, claiming – some clearly exaggerated- impossible speeds. Nick says: “This old thing has done millions of miles but it still feels tight as drum.” He adds that maintenance requires little to no work at all, and that – because it’s pretty much just a giant version of a children’s sledge – it’s exempt from MOT and requires no insurance. The eccentric old man claims that around 1.5 Billion carrots are
required to fuel his impressive machine for a full journey, but that rather than having to pop to Sainsbury’s for the expensive grocery haul, he says that children around the world actually donate them. Sounds a little far fetched really. Nick, who uses the sleigh for his unknown delivery job, says the back is spacious enough to hold “a present for every child in the world.” Perhaps an obvious overstatement, but it looks like you could fit a decent sized fridgefreezer back there though. The affable apparent pensioner seemed only too happy to show us around his workshop, which was filled with toys and games for some reason, but insisted he get back and ready himself for his Christmas Eve delivery schedule (that’ll be those last minute Amazon buyers I suppose?). So spare a thought for poor old Nick who’ll be working in freezing cold conditions whilst the rest of usare cosy with our family’s, waiting for Santa to arrive. Wait a minute...
'None for the road as drink-drive limit falls The drink-drive limit in Scotland will be officially reduced this week ahead of the notoriously dangerous festive period, in a bid to “save lives” across the country.
The change in law means that, from December 5, drivers will no longer be able to 'have one for the road' and stay within the legal limit. The levels of alcohol allowed will be cut from the existing 80mg per 100ml of blood to just 50mg – the same as much of Continental Europe.
The reduced drink-drive limit was formally approved by members of the devolved Scottish Parliament in October. The Scottish Parliament gave its unanimous backing to reducing the drink-drive limit. A Scottish Government motion said this would “help to save lives and make Scotland's roads safer”.
However, critics of the law change have suggested that having a different limit on alcohol consumption to the rest of the UK
could cause confusion for drivers, particularly around the Scottish Borders. From December 5, drivers heading towards Scotland might have to stop in Carlisle for a couple of hours after a pint, or risk falling foul of the law. Forget the lager shandy then, and stick with the lemonade. Anyone caught over the legal alcohol limit when driving will be banned from driving for at least 12 months, and fined up to £5,000 and may receive up to six months in prison.

Women’s footballer in final 3 for FIFA goal of the year James Rodriguez, Robin Van Persie and Stephanie Roche – not the three names you would expect in the shortlist for the FIFA goal of the year award. Messrs Rodriguez and Van Persie? Yes. However, after a wonder goal from Dublin born Stephanie Roche, she now joins the ‘ Top Gun’s – The best of the best.
Both her rivals scored their goals at the World Cup, Van Persie’s coming against defending world
champions Spain in the group stages in Brazil, while Rodriguez’s volley was struck against Uruguay in the second round. In contrast, Ms Roche, a former Peamount United striker, scored her wonder goal for the club against Wexford Youths. She was among a starstudded pool of nominees before a public vote cut the number of contenders down to three last week. The 25-year-old will now travel to Zurich on January 12th where the Puskas Award will be handed out at the Fifa Ballon d’Or ceremony. A new poll has opened and will close during the live television show on the night of the awards.
Scottish Aintree hero retires Grand National winning jockey, Ryan Mania, has announced his retirement at the age of just25. Mania shot to fame winning the world’s greatest steeplechase in 2013, saddling home Auroras Encore at odds of 66/1. The Scot cited weight problems as the reason behind the shock decision. Mania told the Yorkshire Post: “People don’t always see the sacrifices that jockeys have to make if they’re to make the weight, and also the travelling and the time away from your
family.” He added “I thought I’d be able to carry on until Christmas, but my mind is made up.” Mania who had previously taken a sabbatical, in 2011, confirmed that this time it is permanent by saying: “I’m not being fair to myself if I carry on being miserable; this is different to last time when I always knew I would come back riding at some point. I rode four winners the other week and I just didn’t get that kick out of winning.”
Ryder Cup organisers No Scots represented praise local Community aT BBC SPOTY As the final pieces of infrastructure from the tournament were removed form its temporary home, Ryder Cup Europe praised the local community for assisting in leaving a “Strong economic and tourism legacy” The event team said: “significant investment, tourism and education initiatives all providing a major economic
boost to the area.” Jamie Hepburn, Sports minister, added to the Ryder Cup team’s sentiments: “The local support around the course was fantastic, giving a warm welcome to visitors from 96 countries and showing half a billion TV viewers that Scotland is the perfect stage for world class events.”
Despite being held at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow next month, Scotland will not have one representative in the final ten up for the award. England has seven up for nomination, Northern Ireland two and Wales have one. Having had two winners since 2008, Sir Chris Hoy and Andy Murray, Scotland’s best hopes lay with
Commonwealth swimming heroes Hannah Miley and Ross Murdoch, but both were over-looked. Rory McIlroy and recent F1 World champion Lewis Hamilton seem set to battle it out for the award. Mcilroy is currently 2-9 favourite with Ladbrokes.

Hearts owner APPALLED BY ‘unacceptable and dangerous’ behaviour DURING CELTIC MATCH Hearts owner Ann Budge released a statement via the club’s website on Wednesday, addressing the alleged damage of property, threatening behaviour and sectarianism of the travelling Celtic support following Hearts cup Clash with the Glasgow side. Ms Budge claimed the behaviour was ‘unacceptable and dangerous’ and Budge said, in line with previous statements of zero tolerance, that any individuals found guilty would be banned from the stadium for life. Ms Budge has also called for Celtic to discipline five fans arrested for alleged sectarian abuse during Sunday’s William Hill Scottish Cup tie at Tynecastle. “The same police report confirms that five Celtic supporters were arrested for sectarian abuse, coin throwing and disorderly behaviour,” Budge said. “I hope that Celtic will take appropriate action against those individuals who let them down. Certainly, at Hearts, we will do everything in our power to ensure they are never again allowed into Tynecastle.”
Damage Budge was upset by the behaviour
of visiting supporters on Sunday and also disappointed with what she perceived as a lack of reaction from officials and police who appeared ‘to take little or no action’ as the misbehaviour continued. “I was appalled at the vandalism carried out by visiting supporters on Sunday,” Budge added “Having recently spent significant sums to replace broken seats in the Roseburn Stand, for the benefit, primarily, of our away supporters, I was hugely disappointed to witness the destruction of close to 100 seats. “Similarly, the graffiti on walls, tiles, doors - basically all types of surfaces - was quite disgraceful and this is not to mention the damage to toilets. “I have discussed all of these matters with members of the Celtic executive and we are working cooperatively to address the issues. No club should be on the receiving end of such unacceptable behaviour and no club should be put in the position of having to defend such behaviour. “The most distressing emails/ reports I have received are of intimidation both to fans and to staff from away fans. Everyone gets frustrated when officials and police appear to take little or no action. “This is something I will discuss with the authorities but as many of us know, their response is very often influenced by a need not to further inflame a situation. The only real answer is to try to remove those
people who cause the problems and who spoil the whole experience for so many others.” She was also upset to receive correspondence from fans who had taken their children to the game, but would be unlikely to return. “I was pleased to learn that approximately 20 per cent of the Hearts supporters on Sunday were youths,” she said. “The not so good news is that I have received a number of emails/ letters from parents stating that their children were terrified/had to be removed part way through the game/were traumatised - and as such would be unlikely ever to want to return to a game. This is appalling.” In responses to Ms Budge, Celtic made the following statement via their club website: As recent years have shown, the fixture between Heart of Midlothian and Celtic at Tynecastle Stadium has become a difficult one. This follows various incidents, including an attack on the Celtic manager and continued sectarian abuse directed at Celtic management, staff and players. Celtic representatives met with Ann Budge and her Executive team yesterday and were made aware of particular issues which arose at the match on Sunday. In addition to these issues, missiles were thrown into the Celtic support, a Celtic supporter sustained injuries
at the match after being hit with coins, and sectarian abuse was again directed at Celtic staff and players. We are also aware of a home supporter again attempting to enter the field of play at Tynecastle, this time to approach one of our players. We are addressing these matters with Heart of Midlothian and welcome the desire of Ann Budge to seek a positive and enjoyable matchday experience for all football supporters at Tynecastle. We look forward to working with her to achieve this. Celtic supporters have a long and proud record of positive support for the Club. Our fans have developed an excellent reputation and this is something we cherish and wish to preserve. It is very important to note that the vast majority of Celtic supporters and Scottish football supporters
behave impeccably at matches. With regards to the reported incidents at the match on Sunday, we would like to re-iterate that any form of offensive or inappropriate behaviour is contrary to our core values and the Club will deal with those responsible in the appropriate manner. We share the concerns expressed by Ann Budge and her aim to eradicate all forms of offensive behaviour from Scottish football. We can assure Heart of Midlothian that we will be pleased to continue to cooperate with them fully to ensure that all issues from this match concerning both sets of supporters are addressed. Celtic striker Anthony Stokes also took to Twitter to voice his opinion, stating he has never received as many sectarian comments directed at him as he did that Sunday.

The Union of Fans have called on fellow Rangers supporters for an immediate boycott of club shops and Sports Direct as a protest against the “disgraceful” deal set up with Mike Ashley’s retail firm, Sports Direct. UoF commissioned an independent accountancy firm to forensically examine books that were recently released by the club. Upon receiving the finalised report, the UoF claim that Rangers international Football Club only receive 75p for every £10 spent on club merchandise. This is in complete contradiction to Chairman David Somers’ claim that the club “make quite a lot of money” from the deal. Ashley has come under mounting criticism from increased sections of the support since he increased his shareholding in the Ibrox club. Despite offering up loans totalling £3m, enabling wages to be paid the past
two months, fans are concerned why Ashley’s ‘Short term fix’ was chosen over the investment package offered by lifelong fan Dave King .
Adding insult to injury, last week UEFA announced that due to Ashley’s increased control in Rangers International Football Club, and being owner of Newcastle United, that both clubs cannot participate in Europe in the same season under Article 3 of UEFA regulations, which read as follows:
Integrity of the competition

tration and/or sporting performance of any other club participating in a UEFA club competition, or

UoF Full statement
“Since the release of the accounts for RIFC PLC, the focus has rightly been on the almost immediate requirement for more cash simply to pay bills and also the board’s wish to raise £8m in equity finance despite recently turning down a valid, fully funded offer for £16m.“However, having had the accounts analysed by qualified accountants, we feel it is important to bring Rangers fans’ attention to the absolutely disgraceful reality of the retail deal which has been entered into with Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct. “We have become accustomed to David Somers’, Comical Ali style proclamations about our club. He stated recently that Rangers ‘make quite a lot of money’ from the Sports Direct deal but that is not how the accounts
read in our analysis.
“In fact, despite the loyalty of the Rangers fans seeing £7.6m spent on retail in the year covered by the accounts, the club’s share of that spending is a paltry £590k. That means that for every £10 spent by Rangers fans on merchandise, the club receives only around 75p. The accounts also reveal that Rangers Retail has an obligation to purchase stock at a higher price than it is able to be sold at. “In the second half of the year covered by the accounts it appears that the portion of profit due to the club is an unbelievable £2k. “For comparative purposes, the much maligned JJB agreement, our previous retail deal, made the club a minimum of £4.8m a year over the term of the deal, over 8x the amount we are making from Sports Direct. “Crucially, it is also not clear whether the club has yet received a penny of the £590k it is due or whether it is still retained within Rangers Retail. Indeed, from inception it would appear that the club has only received £100k
in dividends from the venture with Sports Direct. Mr Ashley has loaned money to strengthen his stranglehold over our commercial operations whilst funds due to the club through Rangers Retail, over which Sports Direct has effective control, are retained.” The Union of Fans are calling for a Sports Direct boycott and the statement added: “We have always feared that the deal Charles Green did with Sports Direct was dreadful for Rangers. Mr Somers’ ridiculous defence of it, on behalf of this discredited and incompetent board, can be added to the list of reasons why he, the Easdale brothers, Norman Crighton and Derek Llambias are rightly distrusted by the vast majority of our fans. “In light of the information revealed in the accounts we urge fans to stop buying merchandise from club stores, which are now under Mr Ashley’s full control or being shut down, and Sports Direct. “Your loyalty is being abused and the club is not benefiting from the money you are pouring into Mr Ashley’s pockets.”
