Historic referendum is important for more reasons than one

19 September - 3 October 2014 | GLASGOW NEWS 3

This morning’s victory for the No campaign is significant for more than just what it means for the future governance of Scotland but for how political decisions are made in Scotland in the future and how Westminster and Holyrood views the newly awakened Scottish electorate.

The referendum has had one deeply profound effect on everyday life in Scotland, politics is now at the heart of Scottish life and looks set to stay at the forefront of peoples minds for the foreseeable future.

Not since the 1950’s has Scotland seen this level of turnout for a referendum or election with 84 percent of the registered electorate casting their vote and 97 percent of the population in total registering to vote, the political establishment on both sides of the border needs to sit up and take notice, the Scottish people have mobilised and become one of the most active and vocal political forces in the UK, which come the general election in May of next year Westminster will do well to court for their support and ignore Scottish opinion at their peril. The Lion Rampant has re-awoken and it’s making its voice heard through political discourse, regardless of which side you support this bodes well for the people of Scotland in the future, with politics being discussed in depth at the dinner table, in restaurants, coffee shops and bars across the country, a stronger Scotland has been born and not through additional powers promised to Holyrood.

So the political elite must take heed as the Scottish Lion roars once again, maybe not for independence but for change.

Andy Murray receives abuse online after tweeting support for Yes campaign Yesterday morning Andy Murray broke his long standing silence on the referendum stating his support for the Yes camp on Twitter, tweeting: "Huge day for Scotland today! no campaign negativity last few days totally swayed my view on it. excited to see the outcome. lets do this!"

His statement of support for the Yes campaign was met with a horrifying tirade of abuse from users of the social media site.

One of the most disgusting tweets was from the user @sportingharry which read: “Wish u had been killed at Dunblane, you miserable anti-British hypocritical little git. Your life will be a misery from now on."

However a dedicated group of Murray’s fans and Yes supporters rallied to Murray’s defence, attacking the tennis superstars detractors and condemning the perpetrators of the horrific messages.

Assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins said: "People who put abuse such as this online should be utterly ashamed of themselves for making such vile, disgusting and distasteful comments. We are monitoring social media and where appropriate will take action against those involved. Social media is important for many people but it must be used responsibly. There is no place for personal abuse of any kind on it."

JUDO MANIA

4 GLASGOW NEWS | 19 September - 3 October 2014

www.glasgow-news.com

Here come the girls The 2014 Commonwealth Games Judo stars have indeed inspired a generation. Scottish Sports Futures programme Active East in partnership with Youth Scotland and Judo Scotland are in the midst of a girls only Judo pilot taking place at the G31 Centre South Camlachie. The aim of this exciting new initiative, which has attracted 15 girls from across the East of Glasgow, is to allow all of the partner organization involved to better understand why girls participate or don’t participate, as the case may be in physical activity and to introduce a fun new sport with stars from the Commonwealth Games involved in the delivery. After this pilot a local girls only Judo club will be established, supported by Judo Scotland, Glasgow Life and Active East.

Active East is using the 2014 Commonwealth Games as a catalyst to get more young people active and build skills through volunteering and partnership working to ensure that local organisations have the capacity to sustain the impact of the programme long term. The programme consists of two strands: young volunteers called Active Champions which is a bespoke programme tailored to their individual interests in sport and physical activity, this may be anything from delivery and coaching to promotion, and a Small Grants programme which provides partner organisations access to funding for new physical activity provision and training.

Within this girls only pilot there is also a focus on volunteering, roles have been snapped up by female Active Champions for the upcoming Glasgow European Open which will take place at the Emirates Arena on Sat 4th October.

The local young people and their families who have participated in this pilot programme will be able to attend the event for free.

At the event there will be an opportunity to see medal winning athletes compete as well as take part in a ‘Come & Try’ Judo session.

Youth Scotland’s Youth Active Manager Rebecca Simpson said: “Youth Scotland works hard to help improve physical activity levels for girls and young women and we are delighted to be involved with this partnership with Active East and Judo Scotland. By providing this pilot programme we hope to inspire young women to pick up a new sport, make new friends, gain new leadership skills and get more physically active.” Stephen Somerville of JudoScotland said “Glasgow 2014 was a very special time for our sport, with 13 out of a possible 14 medals being won. Now that this event is part of sporting history, the team at JudoScotland is fully focused and understands the role it now plays, post Commonwealth Games. We have a very clear vision of how we would like to maximise the opportunities that have now arisen thanks to the impact of this great event. Working with Youth Scotland and Active East has helped us understand fundamental areas of this particular project, allowing us to appropriately present judo to the female audience. This project is the first of its kind for judo and we are delighted that young females are not only showing interest in our sport and our female only judo club, but also the bigger events, such as the upcoming Glasgow European Open’’.

We are really delighted to be working again with Youth Scotland and for the first time with Judo Scotland for this exciting new programme. We always want to look at how projects will progress and this had a clear plan from the outset. We are committed to providing a legacy in the East End and are so enthused and excited about how this is developing”. Active East are running a multi-sport event at the Emirates Arena on Thursday 16th October and Judo will be on offer alongside, athletics, basketball and rugby all sports young people can take part in locally following this event. This free event will be open to all young people aged between 8 and 14 and information on how to register will be available on www.active-east.co.uk For more information contact: David Millar on 07738 846527 davidmillar@judoscotland.com

Two infernos in two nights in Glasgow schools

6 GLASGOW NEWS | 19 September - 3 October 2014

This week Glasgow’s south side was engulfed in flames for two nights in a row as two derelict school buildings in the area were set alight on Tuesday and Wednesday night respectively resulting in almost 100 firefighters attending over the two days from all across the Greater Glasgow area. The first fire was on Tuesday night the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responded by initially dispatching three fire engines and crew from nearby firehouses, however the blaze was so intense that a further two engines had to be called in from stations are far out as Bellshill in order to bring the huge fire, which was visible from across the city, under control. In total 35 firefighters were in attendance at on Tuesday night, working throughout the night before finally extinguishing the blaze.

forced to close several streets in the vicinity Police were of the blaze due to the massive clouds of smoke which blanketed the area making safe travel impossible and due to the danger that the smoke posed to the public’s health. night a second derelict On Wednesday school house was set ablaze, only a short distance away from Tuesday nights blaze.

The second saw incident a total of 40 firefighters and three engines dispatched to combat the fire which took the entire night to extinguish, with the last fire crew leaving the scene at 8am on Thursday morning.

Group Manager Iain Goodlet, the head of protection and protection for the City of Glasgow, explained: “We have

in two that have taken up seen two incidents nights significant fire and rescue resources. The crews and appliances required to tackle needless fires are unavailable to respond to house fires, road traffic collisions or any other emergency that happen during that time.

This obviously risks causing delays in getting help to an incident where every second is crucial to rescuing a person in immediate danger.

Anyone responsible for setting fires needs to know there could be truly horrendous consequences and they need

to consider whether they could live with themselves if someone was killed.

It’s also important everyone know that we work incredibly closely with our colleagues from the police to investigate fires and see that anyone setting them is identified and held to account for their reckless, criminal actions.”

Anyone with information on those responsible for deliberately setting fires should call police on the nonemergency number 101. Information can be given anonymously through Crimestoppers Scotland by calling 0800 555 111.

Prestwick Airshow celebrates successful rebirth www.glasgow-news.com

Govan Bowling League boost charities’ funds 19 September - 3 October 2014 | GLASGOW NEWS 7

Last weekend saw the return of the Prestwick Airshow, the first in 22 years, the event was welcomed with aplomb by the air enthusiasts, families and businesses alike. The weekend long event attracted an estimated 30 to 50 thousand people to the Prestwick airfield and generated an estimated £5 million for the local economy.

After such a wonderful turn out the organisers have already set in motion the planning for next years event, which they have promised will be longer, bigger and more impressive than this years airshow with a second venue being considered and more attractions already being booked.

The events chief organiser Doug McLean was extremely pleased with the turnout over the weekend saying: “The provisional estimate for the Saturday event was around 30,000 to 50,000 people. It felt more like 50,000 to me though and that’s a fantastic number which was no doubt helped by the weather. On the Sunday we had somewhere around 9,500 people turning up at Prestwick Airport. There were people who couldn’t find hotels in Ayr or Prestwick. Pubs were selling out of beer. The impact on the local economy was massive. Around £3.2 million was estimated in terms of money that would be generated but it looks like it will have topped £5 million.”

Members of the Govan Bowling League recently held their annual Charity Night in Govan Bowling Club to raise funds for Erskine Hospital and The Maggie Cancer Charity. A Total of 56 bowlers from the 14 league teams took part on a bright sunny evening. The Charity Shield is sponsored by The Co-operative Funeralcare Shieldhall and was won by Nitshill Bowling Club. Local businesses also gave their support Forde Optician, Greggs, Rangers Charity Foundation, Taylor Bowls and others. A total of £1005 was raised and divided equally between Erskine Hospital and The Maggie Cancer Centre. Both charities were delighted when presented with the cheques. Adam Bell who organised the event would like to thank everyone who gave so generously.

US military to tackle Nigerian gang steals £25m Ebola in west Africa

8 GLASGOW NEWS | 19 September - 3 October 2014

www.glasgow-news.com

An I.T consultant who was integral in the running of an as of yet unnamed bank in Abuja, Nigeria is currently being actively sought by Nigerian authorities in connection with a £25 million cyber theft at the bank he worked for.

President Obama announced this week that the US military will be sending around 3,000 personnel to west Africa in order to tackle the Ebola outbreak which has plagued the region in recent months, killing around 2,500 people.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria (EFCC), Godswill Oyegwa Uyoyou assisted his co-conspirators gain access to the bank while they were dressed as maintenance workers so that they could access the central computers in which the digital accounts were held.

The US government has pledged 3,000 military personnel, and $500m worth of medical supplies and logistical support, which is being diverted from funds for the war in Afghanistan. The military once deployed are planning on training up to 500 medical aid workers a week in an effort to reduce the mortality rate of the disease which currently kills around 90 percent of those infected.

The announcement was made on Tuesday of this week during the Presidents visit to a US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention institute in Atlanta after warnings were raised that there is a possibility that the deadly virus could mutate into a more easily transmitted form, raising the potential for the virus spreading to other regions of the planet. Administration officials said on Monday that the new initiatives aimed to train as many as 500 healthcare workers a week; erect 17 healthcare facilities in the region

of 100 beds each; set up a joint command headquartered in Monrovia, Liberia, to co-ordinate between US and international relief efforts; provide home healthcare kits to hundreds of thousands of households, including 50,000 that the US Agency for International Development will deliver to Liberia this week; and carry out a home and community-based campaign to train local populations on how to handle exposed patients. US officials said on Thursday that it will take up to two weeks to get the US military personnel in place.

The crime is believed to have taken place last Saturday when the bank was closed and no-one else was in the building.

According to the EFCC, so far none of the members of the gang have been caught but several are currently under surveillance.

The EFCC have said that Mr Uyoyou was integral to the heist as he had almost unlimited access to the computer systems at the bank, from which 6.28 billion Nigerian Naira was siphoned into multiple accounts, from which it is almost impossible to retrieve the stolen money.

Currently no links to the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram, which kidnapped 200 girls earlier in the year have been suggested.

A Latvian man who has been missing since September 3rd is wanted in connection with the disappearance of teenager Alice Cross, who was last seen on August 28th, in west London.

The Met have said that he was also arrested in 2009 for indecently assaulting another 14-year old girl but no charges were pressed.

Mr Mehta stressed that police had no evidence suggesting Alice had come to harm.

In an open letter, leading Muslim leaders from across the UK described the Islamic States conduct as un-Islamic fanaticism and called for the extremists holding Mr Henning to show mercy.

Garden shed armoury Duchess of Cambridge made safe in England cancels Malta visit 19 September - 3 October 2014 | GLASGOW NEWS 11

www.glasgow-news.com

A large quantity of World War One and Two munitions have been safely detonated by army bomb disposal experts in Hertfordshire after the cache was discovered by police in the garage of a suburban home after neighbours tipped them off. A 48 year old man, believed to be the owner of the property has been arrested on suspicion of stealing items from historical "protected sites", he has also been accused of possesion of firearms, explosives and ammunition.

The collection which appears to have been amassed over a number of years through what the police have descirbed as "illegal metal detection and looting of historically protected sites" contained a large number of rifles, handguns, heavier guns, unexploded ordinance, hand grenades and other miltiary artifacts.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who is expecting her second child, has cancelled her first solo state visit this weekend, as she is suffering from acute morning sickness.

The army removed the explosives from the site on Wednesday morning after evacuating the local area before taking it to a nearby field for controlled detonation.

The Duke of Cambridge Prince William will take her place visiting the Island state on the 50th anniversary of its independence, where he will take part in celebrations and visit the national library of Malta to see letters from past British monarchs to the people of Malta.

The decision to cancel the trip was taken by the couple on Wednesday night on advice from the Duchess’ doctors according to the palace.

A police spokesperson said: It is a criminal offence to retrieve artifacts form the ground using a metal detector if the land is a protected site or you do not have permission of the landowner."

A statement from Kensington Palace said: “The decision not to travel was taken by the duke and duchess on the advice of the duchess's doctors, The Duchess continues to suffer from the effects of Hyperemesis Gravidarum, a sickness condition that can require supplementary hydration, medication and nutrients.”

As the temperature slowly drops a little further every day, there is no getting away from the fact that winter is approaching. This can only mean one thing – new winter clothes! Myriam Duran is the founder of Fashionista Outlet (www.fashionista-outlet.com), leading online retailer of discounted designer clothing. With years of experience in the fashion industry, Myriam is here to share some expert advice on getting your wardrobe ready for winter…

KNITWEAR

My favourite area of winter fashion is knitwear. These days, knitwear is not restricted to cardigans and scarves, but is used for skirts, dresses, blouses, leggings and much more. Perfect for cold days, knitwear retains heat while the soft (often wool) material is both cosy and comfortable. Knitwear doesn’t always have to be chunky. Advances in fashion manufacturing have allowed varieties of fine knit and patterned knit to become readily available. Our See By Chloe fine knit jumper is 52% man made acetate yarn that allows for a lightweight finish resistant to creasing and fading.

PARTYWEAR

Winter wouldn’t be winter without Christmas and Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without parties! It is in the lead up to December that my mind turns to party clothes and I start planning the looks I want to wear. While a party dress should be number one on your shopping list, it is also wise to invest in some separates that can be mixed and matched for different events.

Jeans are the most important of all wardrobe staples. Highly versatile, they can be dressed up or down, worn all year round and never go out of fashion! In winter, it is likely that you will be wearing your jeans more often than not – they look perfect with boots and are great for those nights out when you can’t bear to expose your legs to the cold. J Brand is the current go to for those in the fashion know when it comes to jeans. Loved by celebrities including Kate Moss, these guys were the first to celebrate the skinny jean back in 2004. I can testify that not only will J Brand jeans offer a flattering and comfortable fit, they are also very high quality, maintaining their shape wear after wear. Normally J Brand jeans will set you back £250 on average but at Fashionista Outlet, we offer some styles for as little as £100!

SALES

Sales, reductions, discounts, special offers, promotions…while these events aren’t necessarily confined to winter, it is in winter that they are guaranteed to save you the most money. Sales are a great time to pad out your wardrobe without spending a fortune and invest in some classic pieces. Unless you are browsing regularly however, these sales are easily missed. Keep in mind the following key times for grabbing a bargain… • With winter fashion already available at most retailers, expect to a mid season sale around October (or late September in those who have not shifted stock as expected).

• Most fashion retailers will have special offers on party wear in November and December and in the final run up to Christmas, you can expect to see reductions begin, in efforts to tempt those purchasing Christmas gifts.

• The grand finale is the winter sale that most fashion retailers hold. The timing of this will vary from just before Christmas to Boxing Day to New Years Day – however expect to see the biggest reductions yet. Perfect for spending any Christmas money or vouchers!

Any shopaholics out there will know that when it comes to online shopping, most fashion retailers don’t play by these rules and can throw a promotional offer out at any given time. To keep updated, sign up to the mailing lists of your favourite stores and keep your eyes peeled!

Ditch the gym! Four ways to get active this Autumn By Matleena Salminen

Fitting exercise around your daily schedule can be tricky, especially when school runs, food shopping and housework seem to take up most of your time. Not to worry, we have listed four ways to boost your activity levels through subtle changes to your habits that won’t require a whole lot of planning. Before you know it, you’ll be getting healthier on autopilot!

1 Don’t underestimate the power of walking

Tired of sitting in traffic jams for hours on end every day? Prone to getting headaches after staring at a screen all day long? Why not try to squeeze some walking into your day-to-day life, instead of taking the car why not walk to the shop or, if you live close enough, walk to work instead of driving. Or catch up with friends in the park. You’ll get a healthy dose of fresh air and maybe even break a sweat.

2 Grab the kids and go explore

Fallen into a habit of collectively lying in front of the telly all weekend? How about a picnic in the park after a bike race? An adventure to the city centre or to Loch Lomond? It doesn’t have to be big, fancy or expensive - go camping, or on a day trip. Sometimes just spending time together and enjoying the beautiful architecture that Glasgow has to offer is an experience in itself. Become a tourist in your own city for a day! You’ll be active, providing the kids with precious memories and you’ll have something interesting to tell your co-workers on Monday!

3 Take a lunch hour fitness class

If your evenings are fully booked with family commitments and you don’t fancy getting up at a ridiculous o’clock, maybe a lunch hour fitness class would be ideal for you. Most gyms and health centres offer a wide range of fitness classes, some of which run during lunch breaks. No need to be a fully-fledged member in most cases, Glasgow Club, the council run gyms, offer affordable pay as you go memberships and there are plenty of independent gyms with drop-in classes. You’ll feel energised and de-stressed and ready to tackle whatever’s next in your schedule.

4 Sign up for a race

The best way to get moving is to make a goal and take up a challenge. Never been big into running? How about signing up for an autumn 5K race and start combining your daily walking with a short run every week? Sooner than you expect, you’ll be addicted to the endorphin high and you’ll see your body getting stronger and faster. There are plenty of apps around to help you stay motivated and focused. So why not get yourself a bright new top and start your training today?

Faking it and making it Top fake tan tips from Melissa Currie Now that the nights are getting darker, summer is almost over who says you can't have that all the year round glow?

So once you have followed our PrepTips, you are now ready to try this out for yourself.

PrepTip 2

2 Apply moisturiser before tanning. Pay particular attention to the dry areas (elbows, knees) and always make sure your skin is dry before applying the tan.

Make sure you shave your legs/underarms 24 hours before application of the tan. This gives your skin plenty of time to calm down.

Mention fake tan and most people immediately think 'Orange'. This is’t the case these days, now looking like a Wots It is a thing of the past thanks to new and improved fake tans, the products have came on leaps and bounds in the last few years, thanks to this a good fake tan can be almost indistinguishable from the real thing.

At the risk of ending up patchy you should always exfoliate before tanning to get rid of any dead skin cells. Choose a shade of tan that will suit you, for example, if you are very pale, don’t use a very dark tan instead opt for a more medium glow.

There are plenty of professionals out there that can give you that golden glow, but if you’re brave enough to try it yourself, here are some top fake tan tips: Preparation is a must; follow this advice and you are well on your way to having that golden look you’ve always wanted.

Dr Stuart Lutton of Ivy Dental with Rob Leggett of the Scottish Denture Clinic.

PrepTip 1

PrepTip 3

Make sure that your skin is deodorant and make up free.

YES, it’s true! Same Day Teeth are now a reality at the Scottish Denture Clinic. Working with well-respected local practice Ivy Dental, they are one of the few practices who can now offer Same Day Teeth. As the name suggests, you really can have a new set of teeth in just one day. •

Do you struggle with an uncomfortable denture?

Never got on with your dentures?

Put up with a failing bridge?

Same Day Teeth is your solution

1 Choose a colour that best suits your skin tone.

3 Wear a tan mitt or gloves to avoid 'orange' stained hands. This is one of the tell tale signs that your tan is fake.

4 Apply a good barrier cream to dry areas petroleum jellies such as Vaseline are best.

5 Use a mirror when applying tan to avoid missing any areas, also pay attention to your back it’s much easier if you have a friend on standby to help you apply the tan to this area or attach the tan mitt to a long object to apply the tan to your back.

The system means that only 4 Dental implants are needed to support a full arch of new teeth rather than the more usual 8-10 implants. This keeps costs down and saves time - hence the one day turnaround. PRICES WITH FINANCE CAN START AS LOW AS £120 PER MONTH.

TVWEEK Duo’s latest adventure

DON’T MISS… Sunday Night at the Palladium, Sunday, ITV, 7pm.

Varity show, with Maroon 5, Earth, Wind & Fire and Ella Henderson.

is out of this world e’re almost halfway through this series of DoctorWho (BBC1, 7.30pm), so what’s everyone’s verdict on Peter Capaldi as the gallivanting Gallifreyan so far? Surely fans old and new must be pleased with the way he’s settled into the Tardis? As a long-standing viewer of the sci-fi show, Capaldi couldn’t wait to get started, and knows more than most about what it takes to make a good Doctor. Unlike some of his predecessors, he’s remembered that our hero is an alien, which means he’s unpredictable, and some of the decisions he makes aren’t always quite what the rest of us might expect.

W

Capaldi’s Time Lord has a dash of Tom Baker about him, with a hint of Jon Pertwee – he’s strange, heroic, eccentric and very, very watchable. The actor claims he’s had a great response from fans so far. “My relationship with fans, either when I’ve met them or when they’ve written to me, has all been wonderful and kind and positive. It’s a delightful thing when people are pleased to meet Doctor Who, because Doctor Who is far more interesting than I am. So I get his smiles. The welcome look on people’s faces is because they’re meeting Doctor Who, not me. “I’m not a creature of the internet, so I’m not out there finding out what people are saying, but I hope

we will meet a lot more people. I know what Doctor Who fans are like, because I am a Doctor Who fan myself. They’re good people.” In recent weeks, it’s been his sidekick, Jenna Coleman, who has hit the headlines as speculation mounts over her future in the series.A rumour hit the internet a few weeks ago that suggested she wouldn’t be in the next season, while the actress and others involved in the programme have been rather coy about the situation. For now, she’s happier concentrating on the current run,

and certainly seems to be enjoying playing alongside Capaldi. This week, the dynamic duo join forces with a beautiful shapeshifter and a cyber-augmented gamer. The Doctor has been set the challenge of breaking into the universe’s most dangerous bank, and it’s a task too irresistible for him to turn down. His sonic screwdriver has gotten him out of numerous sticky situations in the past, but even that might not be enough to save him and his cohorts from the deadly security systems in place – not to mention the fearsome Teller, a creature with terrifying power that plays on its victims feelings of guilt.

What’s on at the cinema... A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES

Liam Neeson stars as a private eye on the trail of a gang of brutal kidnappers in this searing action thriller. Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson) used to be an NYPD cop until a shootout in a bar went wrong - with tragic consequences. Now he works in the twilight world of the unlicensed private investigator. He reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker (Dan Stevens) whose wife was kidnapped and murdered even after the ransom was paid. The trafficker wants those responsible hunted down. But as Matt digs deeper, he finds that this is not the first time the sick and twisted gang has committed such a heinous crime. His most dangerous case yet becomes a race against time through the streets of New York to prevent another killing! Liam Neeson continues his string of powerful action man roles with this gripping crime mystery based on Lawrence Block's best-selling novel series.

MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT

Colin Firth and Emma Stone joust in Woody Allen's charming romantic comedy set in the Jazz Age south of France. Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth) is a successful 1920s English stage magician who dresses up to perform as Oriental illusionist Wei Ling Soo. He's also a lifelong sceptic when it comes to the supernatural. So when pompous Stanley receives an invitation to debunk a fraudulent medium fleecing the wealthy on the Cote d'Azur, he's naturally intrigued. It seems that recently widowed Grace Catledge (Jacki Weaver) has fallen under the spell of self-styled psychic Sophie Baker (Emma Stone), who claims to be able to make contact with her dead husband. Mrs Catledge's son Brice (Hamish Linklater) is entranced by her for different reasons. But Stanley is astounded to find that the beautiful, self-assured Sophie's abilities appear to be genuine! Sumptuously filmed by regular collaborator Darius Khondji, this is Woody Allen at his most deliciously whimsical.

THE RIOT CLUB

The debauchery of an elite university dining club spirals out of control in this shocking tale of arrogant posh boys. There are 20,000 students at Oxford, England's oldest university. But among these chosen few can be found an even more privileged elite. The historic Riot Club has just ten members. Destined for positions of power and influence, the spoilt, rich and jaded members of this historic dining club are notorious for their depravity and hedonism. Fresh-faced first year students Miles (Max Irons) and Alistair (Sam Claflin) are eager to join. But their lives change forever during a wild, drunken dinner that takes a very dark turn! Screenwriter Laura Wade adapts her acclaimed stage play, 'Posh', which was inspired by the antics of the real-life Bullingdon Club. 'Hunger Games' star Sam Clafin leads the talented young cast. The director is Lone Scherfig, whose most recent credits include 'One Day' and the Oscar-nominated 'An Education

THE GIVER

A boy uncovers the sinister secrets of his utopian society in this striking adaptation of the young adult best-seller. Peace and tranquillity has finally been achieved in a future community. But it has come at a great cost. Overseen by the Chief Elder (Meryl Streep), this is a soulless, conformist, literally monochrome society. Passions are suppressed by drugs and sameness is the goal of all strictly monitored artificial family units. Because of his ability to 'see beyond', young Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) is assigned the exalted role of Receiver of Memory. That means he gets unique access to mankind's troubled past from the man who acts as custodian of history - the Giver (Jeff Bridges). The truth he learns proves to be shocking! 'Salt' and 'Rabbit-Proof Fence' director Phillip Noyce conjures up a chilling authoritarian future in this adaptation of Lois Lowry's award-winning 1993 young adult novel. Watch out for the cameo by pop star Taylor Swift.

SALOME AND WILD SALOME PLUS LIVE Q&A WITH AL PACINO

Special screenings of Al Pacino's films based on Oscar Wilde's most controversial play, followed by a live Satellite Q&A. Princess Salome (Jessica Chastain) promises to perform the erotic dance of the seven veils for her lecherous stepfather, King Herod (Al Pacino), if he will grant her one wish. To Herod's dismay, she demands the head of John the Baptist (Kevin Anderson). Oscar Wilde's once-banned tragedy has long fascinated Oscar-winning screen legend Al Pacino, who played Herod on Broadway. After witnessing Jessica Chastain's acclaimed Salome in an LA production, he decided to commit it to film. A documentary companion piece in the style of Pacino's award-winning 'Looking for Richard', the engrossing 'Wilde Salome' is both an exploration of the staging and a personal journey into Wilde's background. Following this special screening, Pacino will take part in a live Q&A at the BFI Southbank, hosted by fellow Wilde enthusiast Stephen Fry - who starred in the 1997 biopic 'Wilde'.

Empire biscuits

This week we'll look at a pair of traditional Scottish favourites, Empire Biscuits and Scones, read on to see how you can make these tea break classics at home, perfect for the kids or if you want to impress your guests with your culinary prowess.

This recipe will make about 20 medium/large empire biscuits, vanilla sugar is optional but recommended if you want to make the tastiest treats. 450g soft butter 200g sugar 500g plain flour 340g raspberry jam 2-3 tsp vanilla sugar For the icing: 960g icing sugar 125ml milk halved glazed cherries for decoration

Preheat your oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4. Line baking trays with baking paper to prevent your biscuits from sticking and make things easier later in the process.

Mix butter and sugar until fluffy and light. Gradually stir in the flour until well blended. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 10mm thickness. Cut into circles using a pastry/cookie cutter.

Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Allow biscuits to cool on baking trays for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

Sandwich one teaspoon of jam between two biscuits. Repeat with remaining biscuits.

In a medium bowl, mix together icing sugar and milk to form a spreadable icing. Spread on top of the biscuit sandwiches. Top each biscuit with half a cherry whilst the icing is still wet.

REFERENDUM special

by Michael McDaid

No Camp reacts to victory in referendum, rebellion within Tory party takes root This morning in a statement given from No 10 Prime Minister David Cameron made a statement to the worlds press, expressing his happiness with the Scottish referendum result which was announced in the early hours of this morning.

The Prime Minister said: “The people of Scotland have spoken. It is a clear result. They have kept our country of four nations together. Like millions of other people, I am delighted. As I said during the campaign, it would have broken my heart to see our United Kingdom come to an end. And I know that sentiment was shared by people, not just across our country, but also around the world because of what we’ve achieved together in the past and what we can do together in the future. So now it is time for our United Kingdom to come together, and to move forward.”

The PM also went on to address the promises of further devolution to Holyrood, which were made in the dying days of the campaign trail saying: “Scotland voted for a stronger Scottish Parliament backed by the strength and security of the United Kingdom; To those in Scotland sceptical of the constitutional promises made, let me say this we have delivered on devolution under this Government, and we will do so again in the next Parliament. The three pro-union parties have made commitments, clear commitments, on further powers for the Scottish Parliament. We will ensure that they are honoured in full.”

He also revealed that Lord Smith of Kelvin, who was responsible for spearheading the Commonwealth Games committee “ has agreed to oversee the process to take forward the devolution commitments with powers over tax, spending and welfare all agreed by November and draft legislation published by January.”

However, despite these promises, the PM is already facing a revolt against him from within his own party who wish to renege on the promises made to the Scottish people last week, the most prominent member of this antiScottish cabal in Westminster being Rail Minister Claire Perry who said that

Scotland should not be offered “promises of financial party bags” and attacked the measures that the No campaign took last week saying that there shouldn’t be a “whole raft of goodies on offer for Scotland that will be paid for by us south of the border to appease the Yes voters”. Ms Perry, who was only appointed in July of this year, is at the forefront of a group of Tory back benchers who feel further devolution to Holyrood is the wrong move with Tory MP James Gray saying of the Scottish people: “Talk about feeding an addiction. The more you give them, the more they want, and we would be back with calls for independence within a decade or sooner.” Remarks of this kind were not unique this morning as another Tory MP Philip Davies, weighed in saying that he would never vote for “devo max” saying that the promises made by the Government were “done in a panic when the polls narrowed”.

Alistair Darling who headed the No Campaign for the past two years released a statement thanking the Scottish people for their decision, the statement which was made on the Better Together website reads: “I want to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you to you, the volunteers and supporters who have put their heart and soul into this campaign.

Over the past weeks and months you’ve turned out in droves to fight for our future. You’ve knocked on doors, made phone calls and had important conversations with your friends and families about how much better we are together. You’ve shown unity and dignity, strength and passion. You’ve embodied everything that our Scotland stands for. This is your campaign. You’ve owned it every step of the way. You should be incredibly proud of yourselves. I certainly am.”

Reaction to the No result was not limited to the politicians, the markets reacted extremely favourably to the decision with the pound hitting a recent high against the euro and the dollar almost immediately after the vote was announced, this may be in no small part down to the fact that the RBS rescinded it’s threat of moving its headquarters to London and stabilizing the Scottish banking markets as a result as confidence returned.

www.glasgow-news.com

This morning after all votes were counted and the result was announced Alex Salmond released this statement thanking you, the people of Scotland, for taking part in the democratic process no matter your stance and calling on Westminster to deliver on it’s eleventh hour promises of further devolution. Thank you Scotland for 1.6 million votes for Scottish independence. Our friends in the Highlands of Scotland are still to speak, so the final results aren’t in but we know that there is going to be a majority for the No campaign.

It’s important to say that our referendum was an agreed and consented process and Scotland has by majority decided not at this stage to become an independent country. I accept that verdict of the people and I call on all of Scotland to follow suit in accepting the democratic verdict of the people of Scotland. But I think all of us in this campaign say that that 45 per cent, that 1.6 million votes, is a substantial vote for Scottish independence and the future of this country. Let us say something which I hope that unites all campaigns and all Scots. I think the process by which we have made our decision as a nation reflects enormous credit upon Scotland. A turnout of 86 per cent is one of the highest in the democratic world for any election or any referendum in history. This has been a triumph for the democratic process and for participation in politics.

For example, the initiative by which 16 and 17 year olds were able to vote has proved to be a resounding success. I suspect that no one will ever again dispute their right and ability to participate fully and responsibly in democratic elections. So we now face the consequences of Scotland’s democratic decision. Firstly, Clause 30 of the Edinburgh Agreement is now in operation. On behalf of the Scottish Government I accept the results and I pledge to work constructively in the interest of Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom.

Secondly, the unionist parties made vows late in the campaign to devolve more powers to Scotland. Scotland will expect these to be honoured in

19 September - 3 October 2014 | GLASGOW NEWS 25

Alex Salmond, humble in defeat

rapid course. Just as a reminder, we have been promised a second reading of a Scotland Bill by the 27th of March next year and not just the 1.6 million Scots who voted for independence will demand that that timetable is followed but all Scots who participated in this referendum will demand that that timetable is followed.

I’ll be speaking to the Prime Minister shortly after this statement but can I return thirdly to the empowerment of so many Scots entering the political process for the very first time. It is something that is so valuable it has to be cherished, preserved and built upon.

I’ve said before many times in this campaign that the most moving things I saw was the queue of people in Dundee two or three weeks ago patiently waiting to register to vote. Most of them for the first time ever deciding to participate in the democratic process. Today in Inverurie I met a 61 year old lady just coming out of the polling station who had never voted before in her life. I met a soldier, a former soldier, who hadn’t voted since he left the army some 24 years ago. And these people were inspired to enter democratic politics by the thought that they could make a difference in building something better for the country.

These are people who all of us as we campaigned have met and been inspired by. And all of us are a part of all of that experience that we have encountered. Whatever else we can say about this referendum campaign, we have touched sections of the community who’ve never before been touched by politics. These sections of the community have touched us and touched the political process. I don’t think that will ever be allowed to go back to business as usual in politics again.

So friends, sometimes it’s best to reflect where we are on a journey. 45 per cent, 1.6 million of our fellow citizens voting for independence, I don’t think that any of us whenever we entered politics would have thought such a thing to be either credible or possible.

Today of all days as we bring Scotland together let us not dwell on the distance we have fallen short. Let us dwell on the distance we have travelled and have confidence that the movement is so broad in Scotland that it will take this nation forward and we shall go forward as one nation. Thank you very much.

Scottish cancer patients missing out on £8 million in support 26 GLASGOW NEWS | 19 September - 3 October 2014

www.glasgow-news.com

More than £8 million in disability benefits is going unclaimed by people diagnosed with terminal cancer in Scotland. Macmillan’s Unclaimed Millions report shows the situation has improved since 2004, when £15 million was going unclaimed. Since then, Macmillan has established a network of financial advice services across Scotland that help people affected by cancer identify the benefits they are entitled to. Our report found that 32 per cent of people are dying from cancer without receiving either Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Attendance Allowance (AA).

These are benefits terminally ill cancer patients are automatically entitled to. Low take-up is due to people not knowing they are eligible, the perceived stigma of claiming state benefits and the long and confusing claiming process.

Allan Cowie, Macmillan’s general manager for Scotland, said: 'The benefits system is confusing and complex and, for someone who is unwell, it can seem impossible to navigate.

'Cancer patients should be routinely given access to financial information at the time of diagnosis and as their condition progresses.

'This is because money worries are a huge source of stress to people, impacting on the quality of their lives and indeed on their health and the last thing that should be worrying about towards the end of their lives is money.'

Following the Unclaimed Millions report in 2004, Macmillan took action and began to set up financial advice services across the UK.

The first one was piloted in Lanarkshire in the same year and since then Macmillan’s financial advice services have helped more than 20,000 people claim over £70 million in benefits in Scotland.

Across the UK, Macmillan’s report has found that a staggering £90.8 million is going unclaimed.

These findings are only the tip of the iceberg as millions more is going unclaimed by people with cancer who do not have a terminal diagnosis. By not claiming DLA or AA, people are also missing out on linked benefits such as Carers Allowance.

To help cancer patients and carers find out what benefits they may be able to claim, Macmillan has launched an easy-to-use online program called Benefits made clear. The interactive guide, which is the first provided by a charity, can be found at www.macmillan.org.uk/benefitsmadeclear.

Macmillan also provides financial information via a national helpline, local benefits advisers and a range of publications.

To find out more about the financial support offered by Macmillan or how to contact a local benefits adviser, call 0808 808 00 00 or visit www.macmillan.org.uk/financialsupport.

Motoring BMW reveals newest member of the 2 Series family

www.glasgow-news.com

This week BMW revealed the third iteration of the 2 Series with the new convertible model, joining the 2 Series Coupe and and 2 Series Active Tourer.

The convertible is set to hit showroom floors in February of next year, with prices estimated to to start around £29,000 OTR but if you decide to take advantage of what will no doubt be an extensive options list the price could hit around £45,000 with all the bells and whistles. This latest addition to the BMW stable replaces the market leading 1 Series convertible.

The 2 Series Convertible is set to be offered with a range of four engines, including a new 2.0-litre diesel for the 220d and, for the first time in a BMW convertible, an M Performance variant, the M235i.

With the diesel option returning a rather impressive 60mpg combined and delivering 400nm of torque and the top flight M325i powered powered variant pushing an impressive 326hp there’s an engine choice for every segment of the market, from enthusiast to the more budget concerned buyers, the range is interspersed with some smaller petrol variants which seem a little irrelevant in comparison to the two flagship powerplants, offering neither the performance or economy which make the new engines worth having.

Like all German convertible manufacturers, BMW are rather proud of their complex and rather clever roof, going from closed to open top will take only 20 seconds at the push of a button and can be operated at speeds of up to 30 mph, however, unlike the 2 Series rival from Mercedes, which utilizes an altogether more impressive folding hardtop, BMW has opted for the more traditional and lighter fabric soft top option, probably one of the reasons why the base price is comparatively low.

BMW are also stressing the practicality of this latest model, marketing it as a reasonable alternative to other small two door saloons citing the largest boot capacity in it’s class at 335 litres with the roof down, the marque is also for the first time in one of it’s convertibles including folding rear seats in order to accommodate larger loads, although this might not be the perfect car to take to Ikea, it will at least be able to handle the weekly shop or your luggage for a week away.

The trim levels on offer at release are fairly standard fare for a new BMW model with premium models being pushed at release with the SE models coming later in the year, however, there’s one exception to this release in that it’s the first convertible model being offered with an M Sport package as soon as it hits the UK, with the M325i sporting some unique flourishes not to be found on the lesser models such as 18-inch model specific M alloys and the signature of all high end BMW’s vents and badges on the front wings. Despite all this bluster from BMW, the real proof of how good this new luxury convertible is will be displayed next year when it finally hits the road in the UK, inexplicably in the middle of Winter.

Around 54,000 learners with penalty points

Almost 54,000 learner drivers have attained penalty points on their licences before passing their test according to findings obtained from the DVLA. This accounts for nearly a fifth of all learner drivers on the road. The vast majority of the points have been handed down for speeding offences followed by jumping red lights and driving without insurance.

According to this latest study, a third of learner drivers were in fact unaware that they were subject to being punished by penalty points on their provisional licence with a further 40% of new drivers being unaware that they would have their licences suspended if they reached six penalty points.

Unhinged proposals for Cycle Streets

19 September - 3 October 2014 | GLASGOW NEWS 29

Motoring

In the latest Traffic Signs, Regulations and General Directions proposal document which is used as a discussion document to set policy for the coming year on Britain's roads, a proposal has been made for the introduction of what have been dubbed ‘Cycle Streets’. The document proposes that certain streets within city centres nationwide should be regulated with a view to making cyclists the main priority. Streets giving the Cycle Street designation would have a 15mph enforced speed limit for motorists and overtaking a cyclist would become illegal. Under such regulations, any motorists found to be exceeding this ridiculous speed limit or overtaking a cyclist would be subject to a suggested fine of £100 and penalty points placed on their licences.

Such a system would give priority to cyclists on the roads within cities, despite the fact that the majority of cyclists do not pay road tax as a bicycle is their primary method of transport and as such do not contribute to the upkeep of the road system.

If this proposal is approved, the government will have to spend millions of pounds re-designing road systems around cyclists, something that Westminster will no doubt justify as local authorities recoup the money spent through fining frustrated motorists for over taking someone going 1mph on the new Cycle Streets.

Roadworks nightmare for motorists

According to a new study, there are almost 25,000 incomplete roadworks on Britain’s roads, covering an estimated 2,387 miles of road nationally. These roadworks inconvenience almost a third of all journeys nationally and add around 12 minutes to the journey time.

This latest study shows that we’re not all moaning without reason about the roadworks and diversions, with such a staggering number of unfinished roadworks it’s no wonder that many of us have to leave earlier and earlier to get to work or other engagements.

In this writers opinion despite the sheer amount of work being done on British roads there doesn’t seem to be much improvement to the surfaces, particularly in Glasgow, where it seems like the only smooth roads in the city surround the Commonwealth venues, with huge potentially damaging potholes and sunken ironworks covering the rest of the city's road network.

Potholes are the leading cause for damage to suspension parts, wheels and tyres and for those of us driving lower, sportier cars, potholes are potentially catastrophic as they can destroy sumps and cause a lot of other very expensive damage.

If you’ve suffered the bite of a pothole and ended up with a buckled wheel, smashed wishbone or just had to get another costly alignment done, you can claim the money back from the council providing you report the offending pothole and photograph it and the damage at the time of the incident.

So even with 25,000 incomplete road works out there, stay vigilant and if you do happen to fall victim to a pothole or other road problem don’t pay out of pocket, spur the council into action by making them spend some of their cash to put things right.

DVLA urging motorists to get new logbooks

The DVLA announced this week that it has formally completed the roll out of the new red vehicle registration certificate (VC5), but the agency is encouraging anyone who still holds one of the old format blue logbooks to replace it free of charge with a new style red VC5. DVLA are also encouraging anyone who is buying a new car that still holds an old style document to ask the owner to obtain a new style VC5 before handing over any money. The replacement of the blue logbook came about after the theft of a number of defective blank certificates in 2006 after they were rejected by the DVLA and sent back to the supplier, the new document format was introduced in an effort to protect motorists from buying a stolen or cloned vehicle with counterfeit paperwork.

If you have a blue logbook and want to exchange it for a new VC5, it can be exchanged free of charge by sending the original blue V5C with a covering letter to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA. Or by telephoning 0300 790 6802, you will need to have the registration number, make and model of the vehicle and the document reference number of the blueV5C (this is the 11 digit number on the front of the V5C). You must be the registered keeper and there must be no changes needed to the V5C.

Travel

A guide to London by David Gildea

The Proclaimers once said, I would walk 500 miles and 500 more, well I didn’t walk ( I got the train) and it’s not quite 500 miles, but the 400 miles to London (and 400 more on the way back) was a journey well spent. You can leave work on a Friday, and be there in time for a late dinner and a good night’s rest before you take on what London has to offer.

London is just over 4 hours away and the ideal place to go for a weekend break. The plethora of multicultural food and tourist attractions is endless. Although a weekend will never be enough time to do everything, when you leave - you crave to go back!

If you are planning go down to the “Big Smoke”, plan in advance to save money. Virgin trains (www.virgintrains.co.uk) offer advance purchase tickets from just £42 return!! (check your times though, for more sociable hours the cost will be around £70 return, but still a bargain). Follow that theme with accommodation, book early. When it comes to accommodation, you want to find somewhere close to a tube station, as that’s your golden ticket to getting around. A stay at the Hilton (www3.hilton.com), when booked in advance, starts at just £110 per night. The Hilton also offers a best online price guarantee.

With so many attractions, we’ve sourced some of the must-sees, but don’t worry, upon your travels you will discover your own that will be on the agenda for your next trip. Immense! That is the only way to describe “The view from The Shard” (www.the-shard.com) .Just a 5 minute walk from Embankment tube awaits 309.6 metres of structural excellence. Offering the best view of London (and further) available to man. It has to be experienced to understand. I won’t give too much away, as experiencing it for the first time is such a pleasure, however, I will let you know that once you have travelled on the 6 metre a second elevator and get to the viewing levels, there is a champagne bar where you can enjoy a nice glass of bubbly and take in the breath taking views Prices for “The View from the Shard” start at just £24.95

I hope you’re not scared of heights, because the next must-do is The London Eye. Also just a 5 minute walk from the nearest tube station (Waterloo) – how could you ever refuse! The London Eye (www.londoneye.com) , whilst not as tall as The Shard, still has some breath-taking views, with some amazing backdrops. Fancy taking a selfie with The House of Commons and HMS Belfast as your backdrop? How about The Southbank? How about ALL of London? The list goes on. In the 30 minutes you spend in your pod, which can carry up to 25 passengers (private ones are available), you can see as far as 25 miles out, with 360 degrees viewing capabilities. There are a million and one facts about “The Eye”, but I won’t bore you with them, it’s another “Must-do” experience to really appreciate it. One fact I will leave you with though, is that the rotating speed of The Eye is twice the speed of a Tortoise sprinting (0.55 miles an hour for you non turtle lovers).

Tickets for “The Eye” start at £29.50 on the day, or £26.55 if booked on line. If you decide you want the private capsule, that will only set you back £500.00 Whilst in the Waterloo area, The Southbank is also a must. They have markets on every Saturday throughout the year. I don’t mean “Only fools and Horses “markets, but culinary delicacies from around the world, wines from afar, etc. However the market tenders retain the Del boy charm, it truly is an experience. The Southbank Centre (www.southbankcentre.co.uk) offers festivals, galleries, arts and so much more for people of all ages. Now, let’s talk culinary delights. Every time you turn on to a road, you could stick a needle on a world map and find that cuisine available. I sampled Mexican, Jamaican, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, American, Bangladeshi, all tantalising on the taste buds, however, a special mention goes to Franco Manca’s Pizza parlour in Brixton Markets (www.francomana.co.uk). As a self-proclaimed Pizza connoisseur I had to go!

I was told they served the best Pizza in Britain (and Scotland). The bar was set, expectations were high, I was not let down. Luckily we got there before the masses descended to form an orderly queue for a table. I elected for the Gloucester old spot ham (home cured), mozzarella, buffalo ricotta and wild mushrooms pizza. My local guide, who had given this establishment such high praise and their stamp of approval, elected for the courgettes, basil, mozzarella, buffalo ricotta and Franco’s pecorino pizza. Food critics like to (excuse the pun) waffle on, all I will say is this Pizza Parlour lived up to ALL expectations. We washed both our pizzas down with a bottle of wine and the total bill came to £27.30 an absolute bargain, even at twice the price. You may get seated (depending on the size of your party) with other guests, but this just adds to the experience. We met a couple from Germany/Sweden, and soon the chat was flowing. This just summed up London, a thoroughly enjoyable place, aside from the hectic tube life, it’s a coming together of people, regardless of race, creed, gender or religion for a truly, TRULY wonderful experience. It’s sad to leave, but the comfort of Virgin trains helps, as does the thought you know you will definitely be back. Look out for our follow up next month.

Glasgow Kelvin College

Glasgow’s newest ‘super-college’ and Scotland’s only Peter Jones Enterprise Academy

Ask Kumon

The Kumon Maths and English Programmes advance students beyond their school level.

Free Maths and English Assessment Event

Still not quite a year old, Glasgow Kelvin College was formed through the merger of John Wheatley, North Glasgow and Stow colleges. The newest of Glasgow’s three ‘super colleges’, operates from five campuses covering the North and East of the City, from Maryhill in the West to Easterhouse in the East. The College has brought all the good practice, heritage and pride form its three legacy colleges to create a truly innovative and ambitious community of learning for its students and staff.

Catering for around 18,000 full-time, part-time and flexible learners, Glasgow Kelvin has a vast range of courses covering many subject areas and qualification levels, from introductory courses requiring no formal qualifications, to degreelevel programmes. The College website (www.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk) has details of all the courses available at the College’s five campuses.

One area that has been recognised by employers and the Scottish Government as being crucial to Scotland’s economic recovery is Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. Glasgow Kelvin College is at the forefront of developments in learning in this area. The College houses Scotland’s only Peter Jones Enterprise Academy at the Stow Building its City Campus in Cowcaddens.

Backed by the Dragons’ Den entrepreneur, PJEA at Glasgow Kelvin offers the opportunity to achieve a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. However the curriculum and format of delivery provides learners with a much greater opportunity for developing the types of nontechnical skills and attitudes that are essential in today’s business world. The course is business-led and involves partnerships with a range of companies and entrepreneurs, providing leadership and hands-on business experience – and students on the course actually set up and run their own businesses.

Kieran Mitchell is one of the successful young entrepreneurs to emerge from the PJEA at Glasgow Kelvin. Kieran started his business, Flocon DeNeige (French for snowflake) a new clothing line based in Glasgow, before he had officially finished his course.

“The course was fantastic,” he says. “The number of business contacts I was introduced to was incredible. And the advice I got from them was invaluable. I had been involved in enterprise projects before, but this was actually real business learning.”

Tips for transitioning into higher education

For many of us, the transition from secondary school to university or college is one of the most exciting and often confusing times of our lives. Here at OnCourse Magazine we’ve put together a number of useful hints and tips to try and make things a little easier for you in the coming weeks and months.

Attendance is key For many of us, one of the most refreshing differences between secondary school and higher education is the freedom to pick and choose which lectures you attend, and which ones you miss without anyone questioning why you weren’t there. This can be one of the biggest pitfalls for many new students. Although you want to succeed in your studies it’s also almost irresistible to spend that extra hour in bed on a rainy day, but one of the most important things we all have to learn about higher education is that you get out of it what you put in, so if you want to make the most of first year attend your lectures!

Background reading is essential College and university classes are not designed to give you all the information you need for the exams and essays, instead they are more focussed on covering the core concepts of the subject at hand. In depth critical analysis, which is essential for your essays and exams, is almost impossible without reading the required and suggested texts, this means you need to hit the books and get the required reading done so you can not only get good grades but make your essays easier to complete in the long run!

Note taking When attending lectures, taking notes is often the most effective way of taking in what is being said, however, everyone is different. For some taking down everything said in a lecture verbatim is the most effective way for them to learn, for others only writing down the salient points is more effective but conversely for others the most effective method of note taking, is sitting back and absorbing what is discussed in a lecture, mentally filing the information. Everyone learns differently, find what works for you as this is the most important lesson you can learn during your first semester.

Scheduling We’ve all done it, an essay is due the following day and the only solution is to pull an all nighter, this may work in secondary school but in college and university this will only cause you undue stress and cause you to receive a lower grade. The best course of action for a college or university essay, is aim to have it finished at least five days before the deadline. Doing this will allow you to critically evaluate your answer and allow you to perfect your work before submitting it, ensuring you get the best possible result with the least amount of stress!

Choose the course that’s right for you Most likely you made your choice of what you wanted to study at college or university months if not years before starting your course. For a lot of us, after a few weeks, it becomes apparent that the course doesn’t live up to our expectations or our ambitions have changed in the time between choosing the course and starting it. Don’t worry if the course you’ve picked isn’t for you, this is extremely common and many people decide that they want to pursue something else. Many universities and colleges will allow you to choose another course within a grace period which normally lasts around three to six weeks. If you can’t find something you want to study in the college or university you’re currently attending it’s always possible to reapply for another course in another institution in the next academic year. The most important thing is that this is your education, you’re in control of it, and you don’t need suffer through a programme of study you’re not interested in when there is an endless world of opportunity out there for you to take advantage of.

Property Average new buyer needs £40k salary to afford mortgage

A study by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has revealed that first time buyers will on average have to be earning a salary of £40,000 a year to afford to pay off the average mortgage in Britain. Most new entrants into the housing market in the last 12 months have taken out an average mortgage of £119,000, a sum which is entirely out of reach for the majority of people with the average salary coming in at a paltry £26,500, well below the amount needed to safely get on the property ladder. As the market recovers it seems that young first time buyers have been scrambling to get onto the the property market before being priced out of it due to rapidly rising values, however with interest rates at historic lows, many lenders are becoming more apprehensive about giving mortgages to those who are barely able to afford them at the moment.

This is due to the Bank of England promising that the rates will be increased in the near future, with plans already in place to carry out an interest rate stress test. As rates increase, those who have taken out mortgages on the upper limits of their budget may start defaulting on their payments.

The figures released in the study show that currently young first time buyers are using 19.2% of their total income just to pay the fees and interest on their mortgages. The governments help to buy scheme has been credited with bringing the property market back to life, but it may turn out to be a double edged sword, leaving many without the means to repay their mortgages after the interest rate increase.

Sealed bids making a comeback

In a sure sign that the property market is starting to make a come back and build steam despite the efforts of Mark Carney and the Bank of England, sealed bids on properties are making a comeback across the country, particularly in London where the property market is heating up to boiling point.

A sealed bid is for some the most risky but at times rewarding for those astute enough to judge the value of the property and what other buyers are willing to pay for it. In a sealed bid scenario, potential buyers place their bid into a sealed envelope, pass it on to the sellers and hope that they have outbid their rivals and bagged a deal at the same time.

In such a bid, there are no competing bids, no negotiations after the offer has been put forward and no knowledge of what other interested parties have bid, leading to a windfall for the property seller who can secure the highest price for their property in an extremely short space of time without having to deal with competing offers.

According to reports, the numbers of sealed bids particularly in London where competition for property is fierce, has matched that of 2007, when the market was at it’s absolute peak. However, there can be some problems with the sealed bid system, such as when a seller accepts the highest bid on a property, there is no guarantee that the accepted bidder will pay up if they feel that they are going to be paying well above the perceived value of the property. There are also problems for the buyer as the vendor may end up accepting a bid after the sealed bids have been revealed to them as the system is not legally binding in any way until contracts are signed.

SFA Chief Exec making Harding Excels At case for Euro 2020 Kelso Opening Card

Scottish Football Association Chief Executive Stewart Regan and President Campbell Ogilvie flew to Geneva yesterday to make the case for Glasgow to become a host city to Euro 2020.

In a recent interview, Regan made the case for Hampden hosting matches during the competition citing the successful staging of the ‘best ever’ Commonwealth Games in the city this year and the fact that Hampden is one of football's most historic and iconic venues.

Before flying out he said: “Hampden Park is synonymous with great moments in European football: from arguably the greatest game ever, between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt, in the 1960 European Championships, to arguably the greatest goal ever scored in the Champions League, by Zinedine Zidane for Real against Bayer Leverkusen in 2002. On top of that, the stadium, the city and the country have vast experience in putting on world-class entertainment. The Commonwealth Games at Hampden have been hailed as the best ever and Scotland will shortly be hosting the Ryder Cup before a huge global television audience.

I am certain that the city of Glasgow and the National Stadium would provide an ideal venue for the European Championships’ 60th birthday party and I would like to thank everyone involved in putting this excellent bid together.”

The bid has been supported by a wide range of Scottish institutions including the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, EventScotland and Hampden Park Ltd.

Brian Harding was at his brilliant best on Kelso's twilight fixture on Wednesday as Santanic Beat gained a gutsy win in the feature race.

Briefly joined two out by Gold Chain in the Lamont Racing Congratulates Jason Hart Handicap Hurdle, Jedd O'Keeffe's top-weight battled on bravely under his veteran pilot for a neck success.

Earlier on James Cowley recorded his first strike at the Borders venue as Shantou Tiger produced a bold-jumping display from the front in the World Horse Welfare Novices' Hurdle. Cowley, who is based with winning trainer Donald McCain, said: "He disappointed at Cartmel last time in quite a hot handicap. He is very game and hard to pass and really took out at his hurdles when I asked. This is my second second with Mr McCain and this is becoming my favourite horse. It's great being involved in such a big yard and it's certainly busy at the moment."

Get a grip

THEO Pijper hopes the Sheffield track staff 'get a grip' of conditions on Sunday when preparing for the Premier League Riders' Championship.

The Dutchman represents Glasgow in the showpiece individual event and admits it will be tough against a field packed full of top riders.

But the 34-year-old is desperate to see a grippy Owlerton circuit covered in plenty of dirt to boost his chances of making the championship's final stages. Pijper, who believes he's in his best form of the season, said: "I've done the event a couple of times in my career but never been super successful. Hopefully this time it will come.

"I feel really good with my racing at the moment. I'm making some good starts. It's going to be hard - I still have a little injury on my hand from last Saturday at long track in France - but hopefully it'll be all right before the weekend.

"It's another meeting. I'm not going to think about it being the big Premier League Riders' Championship because it just plays on your mind.

"I'm going to go and prepare myself for just another meeting and hopefully they prepare some dirt on the track, because I like a bit of dirt.

"In the past, when it was quite grippy all the time, it was quite good for me. But the last couple of times I was there it was pretty slick. I still rode all right but not good enough by my standards. I will do my best whatever the track is like and hopefully I will get cheered on by the fans."

Pijper has been a leading light for the Tigers side he captains in recent weeks, and is now ranked as their top rider.

And while his average is still up to three points below some of the league's top men, such as Edinburgh's Craig Cook, Pijper insists he's capable of beating them all on a good day.

He added: "I had a bit of a slow start this season, and it was due to a lack of riding of course, but I'm at my best at the moment and I just need to keep plugging away.

"On Sunday, in heat 15, I wasn't that far away from Cook. I feel that if I had made a good start, it would have been quite hard for him to pass me. It's all about what happens on the day.

"Simon Stead is really good around Sheffield at the moment, but I'm not sure if they're going to prepare dirt on there for him. If they do, it would suit me too."

Glasgow City sign Morgan Marlborough Glasgow City are delighted to announce the loan signing of striker Morgan Marlborough from NWSL Champions FC Kansas City. The 23 year old was a second round college draft pick for the US professional League Champions at the start of last season after a highly successful college career and selection for the US Under 23 national team.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, the 6’0” forward began her college career at Nebraska University (NU). She was a unanimous freshman All-American after leading her team with 49 points (21 goals, 7 assists). As a sophomore, she set a NU record with goals in eight straight matches and earned her second successive Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award.

After transferring to Santa Clara University prior to her senior year, Marlborough made another huge impression, playing in all 22 games and scoring 15 goals, as she helped lead her side to the last 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Commenting on her loan signing at Glasgow City, Morgan said, “I had a great experience playing for FC KansasCity and winning the NWSL championship was

such a great accomplishment for our team. I look forward to pursuing my professional career on loan with Glasgow City FC. I am excited to experience soccer in Scotland and compete in Champions League. I am very grateful for this opportunity."

Glasgow City Club Manager Laura Montgomery said, “This is obviously the second year in a row, we have brought a player in on loan from the professional League in the States. Our loan of Jess Fishlock last year was extremely good for us and she had a great impact on the team and indeed the fans. As everyone knows, this is our most crucial and challenging time of the season as we look to do our best in the knock out rounds of the Champions League as well as pushing on to try and retain our domestic treble. It takes a lot of hard work, a great and talented squad to compete on all fronts as the big games come thick and fast, and we believe the addition of Morgan will help us try to achieve our ambitions this season.” With the international break this weekend, Morgan’s first chance for competitive action for City will be in the SWPL against Spartans on Sunday 21st September, Airdrie Excelsior Stadium, 2.30pm.

Lamont back on the pitch for Sunday’s showdown in Cardiff

Sean Lamont returns to the Warriors starting XV for Sunday's Guinness Pro 12 match away to Cardiff Blues on Sunday, kicking off at 4pm. The 33-year-old came off the bench in last week's win at home to Leinster and will replace Lee Jones on the left wing.

Tim Swinson replaces Leone Nakarawa in the secondrow and he'll partner Jonny Gray in the engine room. It's the same back-row which started last week, with Rob Harley, Chris Fusaro and captain Josh Strauss all selected.

Peter Murchie continues at full-back and Tommy Seymour occupies the right wing berth.

After missing last week's game through injury, Duncan Weir and DTH van der Merwe have been named among the replacements.

In the pack, Alex Allan has been given the nod at loosehead for the second consecutive game, with Pat MacArthur replacing Fraser Brown at hooker and Rossouw de Klerk coming in for Euan Murray at tighthead to complete the front-row.

Our players showed great character and effort to dig out a victory against the defending champions last week and we'll be looking for a similar spirit away from home this weekend. Our performance in the final quarter has

Mark Bennett and Alex Dunbar continue at centre, Peter Horne starts at fly-half and Henry Pyrgos is once again named at scrum-half.

Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: "Cardiff had a good away win last week against Zebre and will be looking to build on that this Sunday. We're expecting a tough challenge at the BT Sport Arms Park.

given us plenty to work on this week at training and an extra 24 hours recovery has really helped our preparations."

Countdown to the Ryder Cup

For the second time this year, the world's eyes turn to Scotland, for a reason other than the referendum, following the Commonwealth Games, people from across the globe could be excused for thinking that the only thing that Scotland does is host prestigious sporting events.

However as the Ryder Cup is now taking centre stage after having been a little forgotten about during the frenzy that was the Games it’s time to take a good look at what the competition, in only its second visit to Scotland will have in store.

With only six days until the Ryder Cup tee’s off at Gleneagles, we’re having a look at what’s to be expected over the five day tournament which will see the finest golfers from America and Europe facing off against one another for golfs most coveted trophy.

Europe

It’s impossible to talk about the teams without mentioning Stephen Gallacher’s shock selection by European captain Paul McGinley a fortnight ago.

Having pipped players who were considered dead certs, such as five time Ryder Cup player and former world number one Luke Donald and Francesco Molinari to the coveted wildcard slot in the European team, it’s no wonder that Gallacher has been the talk of the club houses since his selection. Gallacher secured his wildcard spot alongside Englishmen Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood, both of which have considerable experience playing in golfs greatest tournament.

The rest of the European roster reads like a list of the great and the good of European golf with very few surprises, the European team will no doubt be able to capitalize on having household names such as Rory McIlroy and Paul McGinley on their side.

USA

The USA team roster is made up of a collection of reliable and highly skilled players interspersed with three newcomers to the Ryder Cup including Jordan Spieth, one of the most exciting and talked about players in the game across the pond.

In the absence of Tiger Woods the legendary Phil ‘Lefty’ Mickelson is one of the most recognizable players stepping up for the Americans. Having recently finished second and the US PGA tournament earlier this year, Mickelson is definitely one to watch as the tournament progresses and will probably cause some worry on McGinleys part as the week progresses, particularly if he’s paired up with Keegan Bradley, with whom he dominated the last Ryder cup at Medinah.

So now the only thing to do is wait, with the teams being officially introduced at The Ryder Cup Gala Concert at the Hydro on Wednesday 24th this years Ryder Cup promises to be a close competition with very little advantage on either side.

Draw in Austria for Celtic Ghana international, Mubarak Wakaso, opened the scoring for Celtic last night

By Conor Gildea

Another night of ‘so near yet so far’ for a Scottish outfit. However, Ronny Deila will be looking at the outcome from a completely different perspective.

Both clubs went in at half time level, and both coming out believing they could grab the crucial, three points.

The importance, however, of the return of Celtic captain, Scott Brown was evident from the get go, it took less two minutes for him to put in a trademark ‘Broony’ challenge. Celtic started brightly, with shots on goal from new loan signing Mubarak Wakaso and Scott Brown. The breakthrough came soon though with Wakaso, only ten minutes into his Celtic debut, living up to the hype, with an exquisite finish from outside the box to give Celtic the lead. He let the ball come across his body and strike it sweetly with his left foot first time. If this is a sign of things to come from the Ghana international then Celtic have once again uncovered a gem, with no financial outlay.

The defensive frailties that have plagued Celtic these past few months became evident again, when in the 79”, Soriano equalised with a direct free kick.

Although events took a dramatic twist after the game as Celtic captain Scott brown was left behind in Austria after failing to provide a urine sample for UEFA officials.

The equaliser eventually came at 36” with the Brazilian ‘Alan’ showing his value.

Celtic staked their claim first, and who other than the returning captain, Scott Brown to lead the way, again, with another finish from just outside the 18 yard box.

Celtics backs were up against the wall from here on in, despite set piece opportunities for both sides, Red Bull apparently gave Celtic Wings, and they grabbed a well-deserved point, giving Deila further breathing space.

Celtic fans of this generation have only heard of Lisbon in ’67, but they do remember being knocked out the Champions league in 2003, before going on to the UEFA cup final (now Europa league) and narrowly losing to a Jose Mourinho led Porto, is another European journey for Celtic on the cards? Only time we tell.
