Cameron stands by the Better Together claims

The Prime Minister yesterday said in an hour-long speech at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham that he was “so proud to stand here as Prime Minister of four nations in one United Kingdom”. “I was always clear about why we called that referendum,” he told delegates. “Duck the fight and our Union could have been taken apart bit by bit. “Take it on and we had the chance to settle the question. “This party has always confronted the big issues for the sake of our country, and now

England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland – we are one people in one Union and everyone here can be proud of that.” The Prime minister added : “During that referendum campaign we made a vow to the Scottish people – that they will get more powers – and we will keep our vow.” However, he did not dismiss the rest of the Union, adding “ England, Wales and Northern Ireland: “I know the system is unfair, I know you are asking that, if Scotland can vote separately on things like tax, on spending, on welfare, why can’t England, Wales

and Northern Ireland do the same, and I know you want this answered. “So this is my vow: English votes for English laws, the Conservatives will deliver it.” Mr Cameron paid tribute to Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson during his speech, describing her as a “new star” who would take the party’s message to every corner of Scotland.. Furthermore, Mr cameron also urged Scots to sign an online petition demanding the UK government keep its promise of more powers over taxation and welfare.

First Minister Alex Salmond has accused the Westminster party leaders of “tricking” Scots who voted No by pledging more devolved powers. The SNP’s Westminster leader Angus Robertson said yesterday: “The ‘vow’ the Westminster party leaders made to the people of Scotland in the run up to the referendum was to deliver substantial new powers for the Scottish Parliament – no ifs, no buts. “And it had nothing to do with English votes for English laws. David Cameron’s barefaced attempts to backtrack by linking the two will not wash.”

Historic referendum is important for more reasons than one This morning’s victory for the No campaign is significant for more than just what it means for the future governance of Scotland but for how political decisions are made in Scotland in the future and how Westminster and Holyrood views the newly awakened Scottish electorate. The referendum has had one deeply profound effect on everyday life in Scotland, politics is now at the heart of Scottish life and looks set to stay at the forefront of peoples minds for the foreseeable future. Not since the 1950’s has Scotland seen this level of turnout for a referendum or election with 84 percent of the registered electorate casting their vote and 97 percent of the population in total registering to vote, the political establishment on both sides of the border needs to sit up and take notice, the Scottish people have mobilised and become one of the most active and vocal political forces in the UK, which come the general election in May of next year Westminster will do well to court for their support and ignore Scottish opinion at their peril.

Dreamliner makes emergency landing at Glasgow Airport A Dreamliner plane with 260 people on board has made an emergency landing at Glasgow Airport after an alert from the aircraft’s fire protection system.

The flight, operated by Polish airline Lot, was en route from the US to Poland when it declared an emergency.

Safety procedure “Crew had received an information generated by aircraft fire protection system located in the hatch. “Due to the safety procedure pilots decided to land at the nearest airport - in Glasgow.”

The plane touched down at Glasgow Airport at 11:35 on 26th of September, where it was met by emergency crews as a precaution.

The statement continued: “Airport flight control granted permission and the aircraft landed safely. Passengers were informed about the situation.

Passengers were taken off and the plane was undergoing checks. Lot was making other arrangements for passengers.

“After taxiing, the plane was checked by the airport fire service. They did not identify any smoke of fire.

In a statement the Polish airline said: “One of our aircraft operating from Chicago to Warsaw landed in Glasgow.

“All passengers have been transported to the terminal, where they are under constant care of our crew. The aircraft is under

technical review. Lot is preparing alternative transportation for passengers to Warsaw.” Glasgow Airport remained open and operational throughout the ordeal and all passengers were kept on the aircraft while technicians inspected the plane. Boeing’s flagship 787 model made its maiden flight in December 2009 following two years’ of delays, and its brief history has been a troubled one. Despite the fanfare surrounding the iconic plane, the model has suffered extensive delays, manufacturing holdups and problems with its lithium-ion batteries in a program worth an estimated £19million.

Businesses recognised at Scot Business Honours

Scottish Chambers of Commerce last week launched its inaugural Scottish Business Honours 2014 ceremony at the Prestonfield House, Edinburgh - and an Ayrshire Business was among the prizewinners.

A Latvian man who has been missing since September 3rd is wanted in connection with the disappearance of teenager Alice Cross, who was last seen on August 28th, in west London.

The suspect Arnis Zalkalns was revealed to have been convicted for murder in his home country by Latvian authorities after it was announced he was being sought by the Metropolitan Police, Zalkalns served seven years in prison before emigrating to the UK.

Sponsored by Virgin Atlantic, the Scottish Business Honours are truly unique - it takes winning businesses from local Chambers of Commerce from all over Scotland and showcases the best of Scottish businesses at this nationwide ceremony. The evening was hosted by Kaye Adams and included Jim McColl OBE, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Clyde Blowers Capital as Keynote Speaker, concluding with Fred MacAulay for the Celebrations.

He added that he was not wanted in Latvia, he had served his time and had not been on police records in the UK.

DRINK & Healthy future for Scottish food FOOD

Scotland’s relationship with food. Scotland’s relationship with food and promoting the benefits of healthy eating will be at the forefront of discussions with the Scottish Grocers’ Federation, First Minister Alex Salmond said today. Mr Salmond announced this new partnership between the Scottish Government and the Scottish Grocers’ Federation at their annual conference in Glasgow. He said: “Scotland has set out an aspiration to be a Good Food Nation. We are renowned worldwide for our thriving food and drink sector and fantastic products, but our levels of diet-related ill health and food wastage are also world beaters. We now must tackle that paradox. “We have set out a vision that Scots from all walks of life should take pride in their food. It should be second nature to eat, serve and sell fresh, healthy, local produce. “We are talking about nothing less than a transformation of our relationship with food. This will be a big task, taking a generation. It will need determination and a wide and active alliance for change. “We are appointing a Food Commission to help us get there. We are also going to identify and work with individuals and organisations from all parts of Scotland who are willing and able to champion this aspiration and drive forward change. “I can announce today that the first such partnership will be with the SGF. With members serving people from all walks of life in every corner of Scotland, they are ideally placed to propel us all forward on this journey.

This week we'll look at a pair of traditional Scottish favourites, Empire Biscuits and “We know that 90 on per to centsee of convenience that are Scones, read how you stores can make members of the SGF’s Healthy Living Programme are based in these tea break classics at home, perfect the most deprived 33 per cent of Scotland’s communities. Late night delights at Opium Last Sunday night I had an amazing evening at a wonderful Yelp event at Alston Bar and Beef to celebrate the brilliant Doors Open weekend in Glasgow. After one of these nights a few of us almost always end up going for food, and last Sunday was no different. We wandered the streets of Glasgow for a few minutes looking for some place to take pity on us at 9.30pm on a Sunday and feed us. Luckily we didn’t have to wander for long before we found ourselves at Opium on Hope Street who were they thankfully were still serving. Inside opium is quite dark and moody which is clearly the vibe they are going for. It’s all black wooden furniture, dark brown walls, cool feature wallpaper, and there is a super funky light in the middle of the restaurant which I loved. There are lovely big windows looking out on to Hope Street for people watching and I would imagine letting in lots of natural light during the day. A lovely

place to enjoy a meal with friends. When were walked in it wasn’t jumping but there were 3 other tables occupied – on a Sunday night at 9.30pm, I thought was a pretty good sign that the food would be delicious. The staff were attentive and fast with both taking orders and bringing our drinks and food. I wouldn’t say they were friendly but they weren’t rude either, I’d describe them as perfectly pleasant. The menu is extremely tempting. If you are looking for a traditional Scottish style Chinese menu this is probably not the place for you. It consisted of a brilliant selection of both steamed and fried Dim Sum and a great selection of soups. There is a good selection of main dishes to pick from too. As we had nibbled lots of tasty canapes at Alston we decided just to go straight to the mains. While we were waiting for our mains though we did order a side of Prawn Crackers to munch on, these arrived at the table really quickly. I’ve never tried a prawn cracker like this before, it was quite crunchy, more like

I am the Glasgow Food Geek and the type of girl who enjoys champagne with her mac & cheese. Having grown up in Scotland in the 80s, food was not something to be enjoyed and was mostly something to hold my tomato sauce in place. Thankfully I discovered the error of my ways when I moved into the hipster paradise of the west end of Glasgow last year. This is when I fell in love with all things food and began my journey through the wonderful Glasgow Food scene and Glasgow Food Geek was born.

a crisp than what I expected. It was really tasty and I enjoyed them with the sweet chilli dipping sauce. I ordered the Pomegranate Sweet & Sour Chicken which is described as deep crispy-fried chicken coated in a thin batter & served with pineapple & mixed peppers in a zingy sweet & sour sauce topped with pomegranate seeds and a side of Fried Rice. The dish was really nice, the sauce was gorgeous and sticky and the pomegranate really did come through in the sauce. It was presented with a selection of vegetable which went beautifully with the chicken and the sauce. I hardly ever eat in Chinese restaurants for some reason, I don’t know why because I always enjoy it, it does mean though that my chopstick action is pretty rusty. I did muddle through with them though, but some work definitely needs done to bring my mad skillz back up to scratch. This is a lovely wee restaurant and based on the dish that I had I will be back soon.

I am not trying to be some kind of critic, I am a big believer in trying things out for yourself – this is just a diary of my thoughts on the places I eat and the things that float my boat. Just because I don’t like someplace doesn’t mean you won’t though so get out and try places for yourself. Twitter @glasgowfoodgeek www.glasgowfoodgeek.co.uk glasgowfoodgeek@gmail.comW

The show’s second season sees the addition of Sakina Jaffrey as Sheriff Leena Reyes and Matt Barr as Nick Hawley. For their part, Ichabod and Abbie face a new slew of netherworld evils and must combat them, at times, using fire to fight fire. Plus, the realization that their No. 1 foe is actually Ichabod’s son places loyalties – and seemingly unbreakable friendships – to the ultimate test.

What’s on at the cinema... A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES Liam Neeson stars as a private eye on the trail of a gang of brutal kidnappers in this searing action thriller. Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson) used to be an NYPD cop until a shootout in a bar went wrong - with tragic consequences. Now he works in the twilight world of the unlicensed private investigator. He reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker (Dan Stevens) whose wife was kidnapped and murdered even after the ransom was paid. The trafficker wants those responsible hunted down. But as Matt digs deeper, he finds that this is not the first time the sick and twisted gang has committed such a heinous crime. His most dangerous case yet becomes a race against time through the streets of New York to prevent another killing! Liam Neeson continues his string of powerful action man roles with this gripping crime mystery based on Lawrence Block's best-selling novel series.

MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT Colin Firth and Emma Stone joust in Woody Allen's charming romantic comedy set in the Jazz Age south of France. Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth) is a successful 1920s English stage magician who dresses up to perform as Oriental illusionist Wei Ling Soo. He's also a lifelong sceptic when it comes to the supernatural. So when pompous Stanley receives an invitation to debunk a fraudulent medium fleecing the wealthy on the Cote d'Azur, he's naturally intrigued. It seems that recently widowed Grace Catledge (Jacki Weaver) has fallen under the spell of self-styled psychic Sophie Baker (Emma Stone), who claims to be able to make contact with her dead husband. Mrs Catledge's son Brice (Hamish Linklater) is entranced by her for different reasons. But Stanley is astounded to find that the beautiful, self-assured Sophie's abilities appear to be genuine! Sumptuously filmed by regular collaborator Darius Khondji, this is Woody Allen at his most deliciously whimsical.

THE RIOT CLUB The debauchery of an elite university dining club spirals out of control in this shocking tale of arrogant posh boys. There are 20,000 students at Oxford, England's oldest university. But among these chosen few can be found an even more privileged elite. The historic Riot Club has just ten members. Destined for positions of power and influence, the spoilt, rich and jaded members of this historic dining club are notorious for their depravity and hedonism. Fresh-faced first year students Miles (Max Irons) and Alistair (Sam Claflin) are eager to join. But their lives change forever during a wild, drunken dinner that takes a very dark turn! Screenwriter Laura Wade adapts her acclaimed stage play, 'Posh', which was inspired by the antics of the real-life Bullingdon Club. 'Hunger Games' star Sam Clafin leads the talented young cast. The director is Lone Scherfig, whose most recent credits include 'One Day' and the Oscar-nominated 'An Education

THE GIVER A boy uncovers the sinister secrets of his utopian society in this striking adaptation of the young adult best-seller. Peace and tranquillity has finally been achieved in a future community. But it has come at a great cost. Overseen by the Chief Elder (Meryl Streep), this is a soulless, conformist, literally monochrome society. Passions are suppressed by drugs and sameness is the goal of all strictly monitored artificial family units. Because of his ability to 'see beyond', young Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) is assigned the exalted role of Receiver of Memory. That means he gets unique access to mankind's troubled past from the man who acts as custodian of history - the Giver (Jeff Bridges). The truth he learns proves to be shocking! 'Salt' and 'Rabbit-Proof Fence' director Phillip Noyce conjures up a chilling authoritarian future in this adaptation of Lois Lowry's award-winning 1993 young adult novel. Watch out for the cameo by pop star Taylor Swift.

SALOME AND WILD SALOME PLUS LIVE Q&A WITH AL PACINO

Special screenings of Al Pacino's films based on Oscar Wilde's most controversial play, followed by a live Satellite Q&A. Princess Salome (Jessica Chastain) promises to perform the erotic dance of the seven veils for her lecherous stepfather, King Herod (Al Pacino), if he will grant her one wish. To Herod's dismay, she demands the head of John the Baptist (Kevin Anderson). Oscar Wilde's once-banned tragedy has long fascinated Oscar-winning screen legend Al Pacino, who played Herod on Broadway. After witnessing Jessica Chastain's acclaimed Salome in an LA production, he decided to commit it to film. A documentary companion piece in the style of Pacino's award-winning 'Looking for Richard', the engrossing 'Wilde Salome' is both an exploration of the staging and a personal journey into Wilde's background. Following this special screening, Pacino will take part in a live Q&A at the BFI Southbank, hosted by fellow Wilde enthusiast Stephen Fry - who starred in the 1997 biopic 'Wilde'.

Craig Maclachlan, 30, of Glasgow first got the acting bug 10 years ago. Starting out in local theatres and plays, before getting his first line on T.V in BBC 3’s “How not to live your life”. The line which set him on the path to where his now was simple, but memorable “I’d like to sign up for your charity”

replacement, despite being the wrong age and not the right fit for the role, it paid off - and that was the catalyst for an efflorescence relationship.

With parts scarce in Scotland, instead of sitting waiting on the phone to ring for work, Craig took it upon himself to set up Macalachlan84 Productions, first taking on a Production roles in 2013, then Directorial roles in 2014.

Elanor not only co-stars in it, but is the actual writer, penning it at just the age of 19. Dark Haven was initially written as a novel, which was warmly received. However after Craig and Elanor’s successful encounter on the set of Glory Hunter, Craig suggested developing it from a novel and taking Dark Haven to the screen. Despite it being transformed to screen, the book remains an entity in itself. Each avenue giving different experiences and encounters for the characters.

Craig directed the short film ‘Glory Hunter’ (released in early 2014) and it’s a first of its kind in the “Kickboxing love triangle” genre. His directorial skills came to the fore in the ‘Heavens collide’ music video of John Taylor, which he also starred in. Heavens Collide has now been syndicated to appear in Network shows in America. Going back to Glory Hunter, Craig cast Elanor Miller as a last minute

Eleanor is co-star in soon to be released ‘Dark Haven’, Which Craig stars in and Directs. Dark Haven is a new take on the Vampire genre, set in a modern mystical Scotland, focussing on a tortured relationship in a supernatural world.

Craig cites his influences as films such as ‘Near Dark’, Lost Boys, and probably his biggest influence has been Tom Cruise with his role in ‘Interview with a Vampire’, this film probably changing the way vampire films are perceived now. So playing

a Vampire in Dark Haven is a dream come true for him. Several months in production, over 50 people involved in the making of Dark Haven, and showcasing actors from hit films such as ‘Under the Skin’, ‘Fairy Flag’ and hit T.V show ‘Outlander’, Dark Haven is hotly anticipated for its release in late 2014. Not one to rest on his laurels, Craig and his Production company have big plans for the future, aiming to crack the American market, but before he embarks to take on Hollywood, he has a Showcase evening coming up in November, featuring 5 films from some of Scotland’s top writers and a new project lined up for release in January 2015. Keeping the name under wraps just now, he describes it as “This is England meets Neds” For more information: Find Dark Haven on Facebook

Alexander Millar On Friday 26th Washington Green’s Alexander Millar started his 5 month showcase of “Working Man: The Homecoming” in the Scotland Street School museum which brings him back to his second home, with his nana staying in Shettleston he spent a lot time away from his hometown in Springside. He uses his nana, papa, dad and sometimes himself in a lot of his paintings, encapsulating his youthful memories. Growing up Alexander wanted to be an actor and loved the way stage lighting caused a dramatic affect on stage, he also enjoyed watching the simpler things of life, such as an elderly man getting on a bike. He first got started as an artist when he would sit and draw sketches of people for his Dad that he could remember from his village, they would both laugh as he managed to capture some of their personalities. From this grew a stronger bond with his father that unfortunately wasn’t there as he growing up but it was to be short lived with his Dad passing away with Parkinson’s.

His first big break was in a basement museum on Bath Street, he had a preview booked for the Sunday and dropped his pieces off on the Friday, as he went on to do other things that day he got a phone call from the museums director asking him to come back as there was a queue round the corner of people wanting to buy his work. He sold out in 1 day, 2 days before his own preview. Moving forward he was scooped up by Washington Green and as they say the rest was history. The timing of this event was particularly important to Alexander as he wanted it to be during the year of The Homecoming, this tying in with Scotland Street School Museum just seemed like the perfect match for an exhibit of his work that was all about Glasgow. One picture stood out to me that is titled “The Exodus” which was based on the old Billy Connelly story of everybody rushing out of the shipyards at the end of the day however with the last shipyard in Glasgow closing not so long ago the painting looks a more somber affair. I would strongly suggest going along to see the exhibit as it will most likely bring back some fond memories from your youth too, you can also see some of his other work at www.alexandermillar.com.

The Big Music Project The Big Music Project is a £4million lottery-funded initiative driven by Global's Capital FM and the BPI, the body that represents British record labels. The project is designed to open up new career possibilities for young people aged 14-24 and to develop transferable skills for building a career in the music industry and other employment. If you want to be in the music industry then you were most likely at the Arches. For those of you who weren’t able to make it, I thought I should go along to gather as many helpful tips and tricks as I could and share them with you. On the night there were several acts such as; The View, Hector Bizerk, David Laing, Paul Shelvin, Louisa Haggerty, Brown Bear, Rhydian, Vukovi, Will Kennard from Chase & Status and talks from Wizdom and Plan B. Here are some starting points 1. Write some good songs and get really good at playing them. There are many aspiring artists out there who think having an array of songs under your belt is the best way to get noticed but if you can’t give them your full potential then no one will want to listen. Work on a collection of songs you enjoy doing, try and find a trust worthy friend who will tell you the truth about your music. This was point in Plan B’s talk, he had one friend who always had something to say about his songs and started to imagine what he would say before letting him hear it so that he could change it and still be happy with the end result. 2. Get a good name and get it out there. Most bands will already have a name in mind however research your name, if you find out there is another band out there with your name it could cause you hassle. If you are a solo artist I would still check, it might be your name but you wouldn’t want to piggy back on someone else’s achievements never mind someone doing the same to you. Once you have got that then try to find the best way to link them with social media, check if your domain name would be close to both your twitter and Facebook accounts. 3. Set up at least a Facebook and Twitter account and use them. Social networking is compulsory for new bands these days – if only because agents, bookers and labels are going to want to know how many Facebook and Twitter followers you have before working with you. So get these set up ASAP and work out what kind of things you are going to post to each, and when. If you’re a band decide who’s going to take responsibility for keeping these things up to date. 4. Write an agreement between bandmates. If you’re in a band, you should have a serious conversation ear-

ly on where you discuss at least three things: who is going to take on responsibility for the various aspects of band business. Any agreements should be written down. You don’t need a big long contract drawn up by a lawyer, a simple document that outlines what was agreed signed by all members will suffice at stage one. 5. Join PRS and PPL and register your music. The minute you create copyrights, if you or anyone else wants to copy or perform your work in public are owed some money. Check out CDU:DIY for more explination. For song rights, it’s worth checking out services like Sentric Music, which simplify the whole process a bit. 6. Gig relentlessly. This will build your fanbase. Social media is great but you are unlikely to get that initial fanbase online. So play live regularly, trying to move beyond just your local gig venue, too much in one place can become boring. Look for places like open mic nights; stage your own gig night. Build your fans and look out for club nights with gig slots, apply to festivals with new band stages, and network. You will almost certainly lose money gigging at this stage. At this point gigging is all about building your profile and fanbase. 7. Record an EP. Once you are gigging frequently you need to get a few tracks online. A four track EP is fine at the start. These day’s decent recordings can be made at home with some technical know-how, so you don’t need to spend thousands on studio time. That said, it is worth getting these right. 8. Make sure your music is available everywhere. Make it available online. Let them stream everything for free and offer one track for free download but sell the rest. You probably won’t sell many but it’s good to set yourself up as an artist who sells music early on. Ditto Music, Tunecore and Believe Digital’s Zimbalam will help you get your music into established download stores and streaming platforms. If you are gigging, it is worth considering pressing up a few CDs to sell on the day. 9. Set up a website and mailing list. WordPress can be used to create really good sites. On there you should have at least a way of signing up to your mailing list, social media activity, a player embedded and all your contact info. Bandcamp and Reverbnation can provide lots of other widgets too.

CHILDREN LEARN NEW sTUDY TECHNIQUES WITH WORLD WIDE SELF-LEARNING PROGRAMME KUMON At Kumon, our aim is for each and every child to become an independent, advanced learner, with a positive attitude to study. We have a desire to create a new generation of independent learners; confident children who take pride in their own studies, set their own goals, and continue to learn throughout their lives. For over 50 years we have made that vision a reality and we are now doing so in 48 countries across the globe.

working, making sure they are developing at the right pace and thus set work according to their current ability.

At Kumon, our approach to learning is different to traditional methods of supplementary education. We develop children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. We equip our students with the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

The students begin by studying work at a comfortable level with the aim of developing good study skills such as steady rhythm and pace, following instructions, sitting with good posture and maintaining concentration.

Kumon is an individualised daily study programme, designed to pursue the potential of each child. Central to the Kumon Method is the principal of giving students the confidence and courage to confront new challenges and to set and achieve their own goals. Above all, materials were created with the aim of producing the greatest learning effect in the shortest time through self-learning. Kumon is a self-learning programme. As Kumon aims to develop independent study skills, a Kumon study centre does not have a teacher at the front of the class. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor guides them along their journey. It is the Instructor’s role to observe the child

In the UK we offer two programmes: the Kumon English Programme and the Kumon Maths Programme. On each programme the student will start at exactly the right level for them. Each student follows their own path of study; they will start the programme at their own individually set starting point and will move through the programme at their own pace.

Kumon worksheets are designed with examples and instructions to support students in becoming independent learners. They will learn to correct their own mistakes, further increasing their ability to solve new problems. The students will then have the ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained through the earlier levels to more complex problems. They will be able to independently select which methods and techniques will best help them to tackle higher-level work. Through completion of advanced work we are able to maximise the students’ ability as they progress beyond the Kumon International Standard. These analytical thinkers will take ownership of their learning as they work towards completion of the programme, an achievement we believe all students can attain.

MSPs hear housing benefit appeals Handing Holyrood control over housing benefit could prevent young people having to choose between education and accommodation, according to homelessness experts. Young people currently have to make a choice between “college and a roof over my head”, Holyrood’s Equal Opportunities Committee has heard. Labour agreed with expert testimony that devolution of housing benefit could remove the barriers to education. But one expert said councils are not using existing benefits to full effect. Discretionary housing payments (DHPs), provided by the UK Government and administered by councils, could help someone through a full three years of college, according to Homeless Action Scotland national policy and practice coordinator Nick Harleigh-Bell. But benefits staff are withholding DHPs to “fulfil their own prejudices” or out of fear that the money will run out, she said. Bob Stewart, homelessness services director at Dunedin Canmore Housing Association, said: “It is very

difficult for young people to take up an opportunity because it affects their housing benefit. “Often we have the sad situation of young people saying: ‘I can’t do it because I just cannot afford to take up this course, I cannot afford to continue this positive pathway into education and employment’. “We are looking with interest as to whether or not, after the referendum, matters such as housing benefit come to the Scottish Parliament. “We will be very much looking at

that and willing to participate in discussion around how, if that occurs, we can make life better and stop these barriers being set up for young people moving back into education.” Labour MSP Siobhan McMahon said her party shares the sentiment that more powers over welfare would enable the Scottish Parliament to help young people stay in education. Emma Dore, senior policy officer at Shelter Scotland, said: “One of the people that use the ‘safe and sound’ service said: ‘It’s like I have to choose

between college and a roof over my head’. “That’s not fair to be happening in Scotland, so I would very much highlight and support Bob’s comments that if there was an opportunity to ask questions about whether there is a way to do this with housing benefit, that we could find a better solution for these young vulnerable people to continue to engage in training and education, which research shows is one of the routes out of homelessness.” Alice Ashworth, senior policy officer at Crisis, said the amount of shared accommodation rate housing benefit available “is simply not enough to meet the cost of even a room in a cheap shared house”. “For quite a long time now we have been pressing the UK Government to at the very least review the shared accommodation rate,” she said. “If the Scottish Government does get greater powers in this area I think that would be a really meaningful and valuable opportunity to think how best young people who need support with their housing costs can be supported.” Ms Harleigh-Bell said: “There is a mechanism that could be used which

is discretionary housing payments. “But I think there is a real fear and even a lack of understanding about using them. “Through working with one local authority, the clarity about when an application for DHP could made and sustained, and a repeat of that, it wasn’t clear how they were working. “People are scared of it being a pot of money that runs out but that has led to it being underspent. “With the extension of DHP now to a maximum of 12 months, people think it’s a one-off rather than it can be repeated. “So, if you are doing a three-year college course there is no reason why you can’t be supported for three years, but there is that fear. “Sometimes there is, I’m loathe to use the word, prejudice, but there is that suspicion that young people might not maintain that tenancy anyway even though there is nothing to indicate that they won’t. “So (they say): ‘We can’t give them DHP because...’ and they come up with a circuitous route to kind of fulfil their own prejudices.”

Property Average new buyer needs £40k salary to afford mortgage

ck

A study by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has revealed that first time buyers will on average have to be earning a salary of £40,000 a year to afford to pay off the average mortgage in Fairfield Hotel Britain. Most new entrants into the housing market in the last 12 months have taken out an average mortgage of £119,000, a sum which is entirely out of reach for the majority of people with the average salary coming in at a paltry £26,500, well below the amount needed to safely get on the property ladder.

As the market recovers it seems that young first time buyers have been scrambling to get onto the the property market before being priced out of it due to rapidly rising values, however with interest rates at historic lows, many lenders are becoming more apprehensive about giving mortgages to those who are barely able to afford them at the moment. to deal This is due to the Bank of England promising that the rates will be increased in the near future, with plans already in place to carry out an interest rate stress test. As rates increase, those who have taken out operty is mortgages on the upper limits of their budget may start defaulting on their payments.

The figures released in the study show that currently young first time buyers are using 19.2% of their total s the income just to pay the fees and interest on their mortgages. hat they The governments help to buy scheme has been credited with bringing the property market back to life, but it may turn out to be a double edged sword, leaving many without the means to repay their d bids mortgages after the interest rate increase. gned.

YOU’VE probably heard that the rules regarding road fund licences and tax discs are changing.

MOTORING

These changes start from 1st October 2014, and if you own a vehicle that needs a tax disc at the moment, you really do need to understand what’s happening, and what it means to you. Here, David Petherick, head of marketing at First Vehicle Leasing, explains… The chances are that the main thing you’ve heard regarding the changes is that you will no longer be required to display a tax disc in your vehicle windscreen, but our guide to the changes tells you all you need to know about what is going to change and what you need to do, or do not need to do going forward. 1. Do I still need to buy a tax disc after October 1st? You will still need to keep your vehicle taxed. The most noticeable difference is that you will no longer get a paper disc to put in the windscreen to show that you have paid. If you lease your vehicle though, you may have even less to think about as the leasing company normally pays the road tax. Not all contract hire agreements include the tax. The only difference is that they won’t be sending you a paper disc in the post anymore to put in your vehicle. 2. How will anyone know that I have paid my road tax? Like most things these days, the records of which vehicles have and haven’t got a current road fund licence is being stored electronically, along with whether the car is insured and if it has a current MOT. The authorities will be able to find out if your vehicle is taxed by checking online with your registration number as they have been able to do for a while, but everyone will now be able to check if a vehicle is taxed in just the same way by going to the relevant site.

3. Does that mean that anyone can also check insurance and MOT details online?

of tax are on the same vehicle when it has been sold to a new owner.

No. Only the relevant authorities will have access to insurance and MOT details. Private individuals will only be able to find out if a vehicle is taxed or not.

7. How do I tax a vehicle after October 1st?

4. What happens when I sell my vehicle? There’s actually some good news as far as selling your vehicle after October 1st is concerned. At the moment, it is up to you to send your tax disc in to the DVLA if you want a refund of any remaining tax when you sell your vehicle. That process will now be done for you automatically when you send in your V5 document to notify them of the vehicle’s change of owner. If a refund is due, it will be sent to you without the need for you to claim it. The potential downside is that you now cannot sell your car with the remaining tax staying with the vehicle to make the transaction smoother for the new owner. 5. What do I have to do if I am buying a vehicle? If you are buying a used or a new vehicle from a dealer, you will have to tax it in pretty much the same way as you would have done anyway. The big difference is that you won’t be able to buy a used car with any remaining tax on it as it will have been cancelled when the previous owner notified the DVLA. This will probably be one of the most inconvenient changes when it comes to buying a used car from a private seller, as you will have to tax the car yourself before you drive it away as you cannot drive it on their remaining road fund licence. 6. If I tax a used vehicle, won’t that mean that there are two lots of tax on the same vehicle?Even before the changes, you cannot claim the tax back on a car when you sell it if you have less than one month of road fund licence left. Before October 1st, you send your tax disc away for a refund when you have sold the car and the new owner will have taxed it as well, so there isn’t really a big change in that respect. There will be an overlap of one month when two lots

Taxing a car has got a lot easier in the last few years and that will continue to be the case after the changes come into effect. You can tax a vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle registration certificate (logbook) online, or by using the DVLA’s 24/7 phone line 0844 770 1992 . For those that aren’t comfortable with online systems, you will still be able to pay for your road tax by going to the Post Office. Things will get better for those of us that don’t want to pay all the cost of a road fund licence in one go after the changes come in, as the option will then be available to pay monthly via direct debit. This option will not be available though, if a new vehicle is being taxed for the first time. Direct debit payment will be available for any vehicle needing a new RFL after November 1st 2014. 8. Why are these changes happening? The more cynical commentators will say that the changes are designed to make more money for The Treasury, which to some extent is true. Realistically though, the changes actually represent a general modernisation of a somewhat archaic system that needed to be brought into the 21st century. The abolition of the paper disc will obviously save money on printing and postage for the DVLA. However, the changes could actually cost the government more money than it saves as everyone will now get their remaining tax refunded automatically when they sell a vehicle, whereas many people didn’t used to bother when it meant getting a form from the Post Office and sending it off. RANGE ROVER SVR

3rd October - 16th October 2014   |  West of Scotland Media

The first Land Rover to wear the new highperformance SVR badge, the Range Rover Sport SVR is capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in a breathtaking 4.5 and on to an electronically limited top speed of 162mph. The SVR’s range-topping 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine has been developed to produce 542bhp while its advanced ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive chassis have been optimised to complement the astonishing performance, whatever the weather. In initial tests, Land Rover’s most dynamic SUV has lapped Germany’s legendary Nürburgring racetrack in 8 minutes 14 seconds, one of the fastest times ever recorded by a standard production SUV. The new SVR unleashes the full potential of the Range Rover Sport’s lightweight and robust allaluminium architecture, while retaining the refinement, luxury and off-road capability for which Range Rover is world-renowned.

In two world firsts for Range Rover, an electrically controlled two-stage active exhaust provides a racecarinspired soundtrack at higher engine revs without adversely affecting refinement during steady-state driving. As standard, new 21-inch alloy wheels with 275/45 R21 allseason tyres offer unparalleled all-terrain capability. Meanwhile, unique 22-inch alloy wheels with performance-optimised 295/40 R22 Continental SportContact 5 tyres are available to complement the driverfocused chassis. Exterior design enhancements ensure the SVR makes a striking visual impact, while simultaneously boosting cooling and aerodynamic efficiencies. A bespoke interior featuring unique sports seats provides further visual differentiation and ensures occupants are held securely in place during spirited driving. Speaking ahead of its global premiere, John Edwards, Managing Director of Land Rover’s Special Operations, said: “The Range Rover Sport SVR is a natural progression beyond the core vehicle’s outstanding on- and offroad capabilities and leading-edge design. Its exhilarating performance

Glorious Legacy of Gleneagles Scotland set to reap the benefits of the best ever Ryder Cup A golden age for Scottish golf is set to follow the unprecedented success of The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

Ministers expect the impact of this year’s event to eclipse previous Ryder Cup events and on-going research will update the figure of £100 million in economic benefits based on the 38th Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor. During a debate on the legacy of the competition, the Cabinet Secretary for Sport, Shona Robison stated that the research project will look at just how successful the 2014 competition has been for Scotland.

The Cabinet Secretary said “To ensure that we capture full benefits a full independent evaluation is now underway. Last week’s Ryder Cup was a spectacular success. Gleneagles was even more glorious than any of us could have imagined and we need to capture just how successful it has been for Scotland. I have no doubt the total benefits will surpass the previous figures by some margin reflecting Scotland reputation as the home of golf

and major events.”

Around 250,000 fans from 96 different countries were at Gleneagles and a coverage through multiple broadcasters reached more than 500 million homes around the world.

Glasgow airport reported a five per cent increase in traffic and hundreds of private jets were reported to have landed in Edinburgh. International airlines, including US Airways and United Airlines, reported an increase in demand for international. There was also an increase in demand for domestic services from airlines including easyjet and British Airways. Across Scotland, hotels reported an increase in bookings. Golf clubs from Ayrshire to Carnoustie have seen bookings increase for tee times during the Ryder Cup. During the debate Ms Robison also spoke about the long term legacy benefits to Scotland: “Plans are already in place to continue the legacy and next year with The Open Championship at St Andrews and the Women’s British Open at

Turnberry. With the future of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open having been secured for years to come and agreement reached to support events across the ladies, seniors and satellite tours, it is clear Scotland that will be a leading golf event destination for many years to come “Scotland is not only the Home of Golf, but it is also the future of golf. This Government is committed to increasing the number of people playing the sport through our successful ClubGolf programme which has already seen more than 350,000 youngsters to pick up a club. New additional funding of up to £1m, over a 4 year period, will build on that success and expand the appeal to families as well. “Thanks to world class staging Scotland - a real joint effort amongst all those involved - Scotland has shown itself as a country that can stage the biggest events and deliver a world class experience for visitors from across the world.”

MIKE ASHLEY INCREASES STAKES IN RANGERS Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has increased his stake in Rangers to around nine per cent, the Glasgow club have confirmed. Ashley’s MASH Holdings Ltd has been named as the purchaser of more than four million shares, which were sold by investment manager Hargreave Hale earlier this week. Several updates to the London Stock Exchange show that Ashley transferred his existing shareholding to MASH Holdings, which he owns in its entirety, to give him a total stake of 8.92 per cent. The Sports Direct founder emerged as the mystery buyer behind the purchase of a 5.23 per cent stake on Wednesday, which was completed on his behalf by Paris-based BNP Paribas Arbitrage SNC. According to share information on the Rangers International Football Club plc website, Ashley becomes the third-largest shareholder behind Laxey Partners (16.32 per cent) and Artemis (9.95 per cent), although football club director Sandy Easdale holds voting rights of more than 26 per cent of the shares. Ashley’s move comes just weeks after he stated to the London Stock Exchange he would not take part in a share offer which was open to all existing shareholders of the Scottish Championship club. The board had hoped to raise around £4m but fell almost £1m short, with around half of the new income quickly going out of Ibrox to repay loans. Ashley bought his latest batch of shares for 20p each, the price at which they were on sale for in the open offer.

Celtic live like Commons people An early strike from Kris Commons was enough to give Celtic a hard-fought 1-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb at Celtic Park and put them top of Europa League Group D. The hosts were forced to cling on in the closing minutes with Craig Gordon making a number of excellent saves as Zagreb poured forward but in the end Commons’ goal proved to be the difference.

The Hoops took the lead in style after just six minutes when Commons left Emilio Izaguirre’s pass for Anthony Stokes before collecting the return and firing a low left-footed shot into the corner. The visitor’s first real chance fell to striker Wilson Eduardo (19) when he rose highest to meet Ivo Pinto’s cross but the Portuguese forward was unable to keep his header down. Wilson Eduardo came even closer just before the half-hour mark when

he unleashed a rasping shot from 25 yards which rifled off Craig Gordon’s crossbar. The home side spurned a golden chance to double their lead soon after when Zagreb goalkeeper Eduardo passed straight to Commons under pressure but the forward’s touch let him down with Stokes looming. Wilson Eduardo continued to cause headaches for Celtic’s defence and had two quick chances in succession as first, he sent a half-volley over the bar,

box and fired a low shot towards the bottom corner.

The Croatian champions pressed after the break and should have levelled when El Arbi Hillel Soudani picked out Wilson Eduardo in space 12 yards out but Gordon produced a terrific reflex save to deny him.

Zoudani went close twice in quick succession as he stepped inside Virgil van Dijk in the Celtic box before forcing Gordon into a smart save and moments later he fired one over the bar after creating space with a clever turn.

Zagreb were starting to dominate possession as they pushed for the equaliser and Marcelo Brozovic forced Gordon to make another good save when he engineered space on the edge of the

The closing minutes were nervy for the home fans as the Croatians surged forward but Celtic defended heroically and held on to take all three points and go top of Group D.
