Scotland’s First Female First Minister
Alexandra Spence
Nicola Sturgeon has been confirmed as the only candidate to replace departing First Minister Alex Salmon as leader of the Scottish National Party. She will formally take over at the Party’s conference in Perth next month, when Mr Salmond steps down, before MSPs and the Queen formally approve her appointment as First Minister - making her Scotland’s first female First Minister since Holyrood was set up in 1999. SNP’s National Secretary Patrick Grady announced that the 44-year-old was the only candidate to replace Mr Salmond as party leader after nominations closed on Wednesday morning. .
“
I believe Scotland will become an independent country
”
Ms Sturgeon promised to govern for all Scots, rather than just the 44.7 per cent who voted for independence in last month’s referendum, and did not repeat Mr Salmond’s claims they had been “tricked” into voting No. But the Deputy First Minister refused to repeat his prereferendum promise that a vote could only be held once a generation and predicted Scotland would become independent easily within her lifetime. Ms Sturgeon said “I believe Scotland will become an independent country. I believe that’s the direction of travel.” Continued on page 8

Crozer Runs Deep at National Poker Event
Malcolm Macaskill
A LEADING Glasgow Businessman and amateur poker player “Nick Crozer” (51) returned this week from competing in the UK and Ireland poker tour in London’s Grand Connaught Rooms. Nick is a well-known face at the Alea Casino in Glasgow where he can regularly be seen playing the poker tables.
A field of over one thousand players assembled in the capital to play for a guaranteed prize pool of £500,000.00 The event which ran over 4 days attracted the best players from across the UK and Europe.

Speaking exclusively to the Glasgow News Crozer said “the big thing for me is to be seen to be flying the flag for people playing poker primarily for fun, people like myself and my friends from the Alea who have other jobs in the real world. I’m proof to the underdog that they too have a fighting chance of winning big money in these major tournaments”
The Best Worst Ad ever Shona Thorne, manager of Scottish firm Thorne Travel has had to cancel travel plans, her own, after the response to her firms ‘cheesy online advert’ which was uploaded to Youtube. In the one week that it has been online it has attracted almost one million views!
"It's a bit of a laugh,' she adds 'It's supposed to be tongue in cheek." The ad, which was just a budget ad, used up the company’s whole marketing allowance for the year. Thorne Travel says that it couldn’t have used the funds any better. In fact, since the ad went viral, the company has appeared on “The Robin Galloway Breakfast Show” and “Good Morning Britain.” These are TV spots that it wouldn’t have been able to get any other way. Shona says that her company never could afford such TV time.
Now what makes this video so special? East Ayrshire Council to provide free school meals for children Molly Smith
East Ayrshire Council to provide free school meals for children. As of January 2015 all children in primaries 1 to 3 in East Ayrshire schools will have access to a daily free school meal. The UK Government’s announcement of funding for the introduction of free school meals in England for the first three years of school resulted in funding being made available through an increased block grant to the Scottish Government. The Scottish Government then announced in January this year that free school meals for primaries 1 to 3
would be implemented from January 2015. East Ayrshire Council was previously involved in the Scottish Government pilot of free school meals in 2007 and 2008 and this experience puts the Council in a strong position for the January start date. The results of the pilot scheme found that there was a greater uptake of school meals, a positive impact on children’s attitudes to food and improved behaviours at meal times. The positive outcomes were more strongly noticed within deprived families. There are currently 1918 P1 to P3 pupils taking school meals and of these, 726 are entitled to free meals, therefore 1192 children currently
paying for their meal will get it free from January. It is also expected that there will be an overall increase in the uptake of meals across P1 to P3 of between 75 – 85%. Councillor Stephanie Primrose, Spokesperson for Promoting Lifelong Learning, said: “East Ayrshire Council has had an enduring commitment to the improvement of diet and health and recognises the important role that school meals play in this. “Overall we aim to provide a total experience for children in relation to lifestyle by providing healthy, high quality food and drinks, teaching pupils about health and diet as part of the curriculum, and by creating a positive ethos for healthy eating in our schools.”

Continued from page 1 Ms Sturgeon added ‘circumstances and public opinion’ would decide when another Scottish independence referendum would take place. ‘It’s the people who will decide if and when there’s another independence referendum, not politician, but circumstances and public opinion will determine whether people want to have another opportunity to choose independence in a referendum.’ She said for there to be another referendum the SNP ‘would have to offer that in a manifesto and be elected with a majority’
Ms Sturgeon went on to say “It is a privilege to have been chosen by the SNP to succeed Alex Salmond
MSP Derek Mackay said of Ms Sturgeon’s impending appointment “I am delighted, she will be a fantastic new leader of both the party and our country. She will build on the substantial legacy and extraordinary achievements of Alex Salmond as the longest serving First Minister, and make her own mark as she leads Scotland forward. Mr Mackay added “Where there was deep disappointment at not winning the referendum, there is now a real focus on ensuring that Westminster delivers on its vow to deliver extensive new powers for Scotland, so that we can build a fairer and more prosperous country.” However, in contrasting opinion, Conservative MSP Alex Johnstone came out and said that Ms Sturgeon would become SNP leader “completely unopposed, without so much as a peep from anyone else”. Mr Johnstone added “For all Sturgeon’s claims about relishing a fight for the leadership, there
was never much danger of that”.

“It’s also astonishing that Nicola Sturgeon is planning to celebrate her coronation with her own vanity trip around the country - no doubt hoping the streets will be paved with cheering SNP loyalists. Going on some pointless jaunt to receive empty platitudes from your supporters is hardly the conduct of a statesmanlike First Minister-in-waiting.”

First Minister Alex Salmond has met the family of the Scot imprisoned on death row, Mohammad Asghar, in Pakistan over blasphemy allegations.
The race to become the SNP’s next deputy leader remains wide open. Three candidates have been nominated to replace Ms Sturgeon as deputy leader, the MSPs Keith Brown and Angela Constance and the MP Stewart Hosie.
He was arrested there for writing several letters claiming to be a prophet and was sentenced to death for blasphemy. Mr Asghar, who has paranoid schizophrenia, was shot by a prison guard in September.

Pick a Good One A drinks entrepreneur is looking for help from gardeners and foragers in Scotland in order to preserve the provenance of a unique spirit. The drink was initially launched in a small run last year and was said to be the only gin on the market made from entirely Scottish botanicals. Jonathan Engels has recently started harvesting Scottish juniper for the latest batch of Crossbill Gin. However, instead of handpicking across several weeks he intends to harvest and process as much as possible in a shorter period to preserve the flavour profile of the drink. During the first run, he found fresher juniper gave a different flavour to that which was used in the weeks after it was picked. But according to Mr Engels, who is also behind the Pincer Vodka brand, the time it takes won’t allow him to get enough Scottish rosehip berries to continue producing Crossbill in the volumes he wants.
As a result he is asking people to pick rosehip from their gardens and local areas then get in touch with him via the Crossbill website or social media with a view to him then buying it.
Mr Engels worked with the Forestry Commission, conservation charity Plantlife Scotland and the Inshriach Estate, Aviemore, to revive the tradition of juniper harvesting.

Maron - FOX UK
Gotham – Channel 5
The Apprentice
The 13 episode second season of IFC’s comedy series Maron received its UK premiere on FOX UK on Thursday October 16th Maron was created by comedian Marc Maron and follows a fictionalised version Marc’s life and his successful WTF podcast. Each episode lays bare the misguided attempts of a man who is trying to grow, but often finds himself asking, “We good?”.
Growing up in Gotham City’s surrounding suburbs, James Gordon (Ben McKenzie, “Southland,” “The O.C.”) romanticized the city as a glamorous and exciting metropolis where his late father once served as a successful district attorney. Now, two weeks into his new job as a Gotham City detective and engaged to his beloved fiancée, Barbara Kean (Erin Richards, Open Grave, “Breaking In”), Gordon is living his dream – even as he hopes to restore the city back to the pure version he remembers it was as a kid. Brave, honest and ready to prove himself, the newly-minted detective is partnered with the brash, but shrewd police legend Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue, “Sons of Anarchy,” “Terriers,” “Vikings,” “Copper”), as the two stumble upon the city’s highest-profile case ever: the murder of local billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne. At the scene of the crime, Gordon meets the sole survivor: the Waynes’ hauntingly intense 12-year-old son, Bruce (David Mazouz, “Touch”), toward whom the young detective feels an inexplicable kinship. Moved by the boy’s profound loss, Gordon vows to catch the killer. As he navigates the often-underhanded politics of Gotham’s criminal justice system, Gordon will confront imposing gang boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith, The Matrix films, “HawthoRNe,” Collateral), and many of the characters who will become some of fiction’s most renowned, enduring villains, including a teenaged Selina Kyle/the future Catwoman (acting newcomer Camren Bicondova) and Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor, “The Walking Dead,” Another Earth). Although the crime drama will follow Gordon’s turbulent and singular rise through the Gotham City police department, led by Police Captain Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevara, “Burn Notice”), it also will focus on the unlikely friendship Gordon forms with the young heir to the Wayne fortune, who is being raised by his unflappable butler, Alfred (Sean Pertwee, “Camelot,” “Elementary”). It is a friendship that will last them all of their lives, playing a crucial role in helping the young boy eventually become the crusader he’s destined to be.
Is it me or is there no end to the amount of shops in London who will take in unsolicited vendors to buy a whole manner of products including lemons and potatoes. The Apprentice started last night to the usual rousing crescendo of nonsense and CV lies. Tonight it was the usual opening task for our 20 contestants, a selling task designed to sort the men from the boys but only because he’d already separated the girls from the boys.
Guest stars for season two include Paul Feig, Chris Hardwick, Rachael Harris, Johnny Knoxville, Conan O’Brien, Andy Richter, Rob Riggle, Ray Romano and Sarah Silverman. In the show’s second season, things appear to be looking up for Marc, yet he continues to sabotage his professional, romantic and personal relationships. His dysfunctional family is taken to new “highs” when the entire clan is forced to co-exist in the same house for the first time in decades, and Marc’s closest companionship ends when his beloved cat Boomer goes missing. The more things change in Marc’s life, the more they stay the same.

The boys had gone with Summit as a team name because it means top. Well actually it means peak so that’s about bang on. The girls meanwhile went with Decadence which represents exactly the kind of ridiculous Hunger Games opulence that Sir Lord Alan Sugar is trying avoid. So they’ve been told to change it for next week, presumably to something more fitting the mood of the nation like poverty or food bank. Off they went, both choosing to sell T-shirts but the boys also wanted to sell hotdogs but spent so long choosing ingredients that they missed all the lunchtime trade. Meanwhile the girls, lead by the insufferably useless Sarah, were advised by the aforementioned team leader to wear short skirts and plenty of lipstick...I’ll leave that one there. She also spent an inordinate amount of time pushing the idea of selling chopped lemons then tried to sell London zoo a bucket of toilet brushes and bleach because,as the old saying goes, when Alan gives you lemons try and kill a penguin. So in the two teams went and it turns out that the girls had clinched it by just £50. This left wide boy idiot Robert, nice guy Felipe and quiet scapegoat Chiles in the firing line to battle it out. Ultimately though the burden of t-shirts, the balls up that cost them the task, fell on Chiles who joined ten others who have been gotten rid of first over the years.

Brad Pitt leads a tank crew on a deadly mission at the end of WWII in this gritty, action-packed war movie. April 1945. Hardened tank commander Don ‘Wardaddy’ Collier (Brad Pitt) has seen action all the way from Africa to Germany. He has always sworn to protect the crew of Fury, his Sherman tank - Boyd Swan (Shia LaBeouf), Trini Garcia (Michael Pena) and Grady Travis (Jon Bernthal). Their latest mission isa vital but positively suicidal one, striking at the heart of Nazi Germany behind enemy lines. As if being outgunned and heavily outnumbered wasn’t bad enough, Wardaddy has also been assigned wet-behind-the-ears assistant driver Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman). Brad Pitt returns to the WWII setting of ‘Inglourious Basterds’ for this muddy, brutal and gripping combat movie, which was filmed in the UK. ‘Training Day’ writer and ‘End of Watch’ director David Ayer drew on his own armed services background to ensure authenticity.
A British squaddie is lost on the hostile streets of 1971 Belfast in this harrowing, nightmarish action thriller. Seeking a better life, naive young orphan Gary Hook (Jack O’Connell) joins the British Army. His regiment is promptly dispatched to troubled Northern Ireland. When a house raid turns into a mini-riot, the soldiers flee. But Hook is left behind in the melee, barely managing to escape into Belfast’s backstreets. Injured, lost and alone in a battle-scarred urban jungle, he’s sought by his commanding officer, Lieutenant Armitage (Sam Reid), and a shadowy undercover intelligence unit led by Captain Browning (Sean Harris). Unable to distinguish friend from foe, Hook encounters both the UDF and different factions of the IRA during his long night of fear. TV veteran Yann Demange’s feature debut is scripted by Gregory Burke, the acclaimed writer of ‘Black Watch’. It’s an edge-of-seat, politically aware thriller, packed with heart-stopping chase sequences.
Winter the miracle dolphin faces a new challenge in this heart-warming family adventure. When young Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble) rescued an injured dolphin named Winter, her prognosis seemed bleak. But Dr. Cameron McCarthy (Morgan Freeman) designed a ground-breaking prosthetic tail that saved her life. Several years on, Winter finds herself in peril once again. Panama, her elderly surrogate mother at the Clearwater Marine Hospital run by Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick Jr), passes away. US Department of Agriculture regulations stipulate that, as social animals, dolphins cannot be kept alone. Now Nathan, his mum Lorraine (Ashley Judd), and the Clearwater team have just 30 days to find Winter a companion or face losing her altogether. Her best chance comes in the adorable form of a rescued baby dolphin named, appropriately enough, Hope! The entire main cast of the first film reunite for this continuation of the story that captured the hearts of the world.

Tooth Decay Away A company in Perth called Reminova has been set up to commercialise a new way to take the pain out of tooth decay, with leading innovators Professor Nigel Pitts and Dr Chris Longbottom at the helm. With all of us still having memories in our head of some form that would link the dentist with pain, Pitts has developed a technique that could make drills, injections and fillings things of the past in the treatment of tooth decay. A system that will allow teeth with earlyto medium-stage damage from dental caries to repair themselves in the time it takes to do a normal filling, without the traditionally invasive techniques. The new method, called electrically accelerated and enhanced remineralisation (EAER), uses low-frequency electrical currents and is set to come to market in three years after three decades of research in the area by the men behind it. “It is often accepted as norm that you will end up with tooth decay. It is a preventable disease,” said Pitts. The technology works in two stages. First the area of the tooth is cleaned, including the inside of the three-dimensional

He said the treatment would fortify the tooth with a stronger form of the original mineral that would be harder to dissolve in future, although long-term research is needed to demonstrate that.

Luxury meets Speed Ryan Dickson Moore
Welcome to the new Bentley Mulsanne Speed. As you can see the Bentley Mulsanne has been made into a sports saloon that the company is calling “the fastest ultra-luxury driving experience in the world.” The Mulsanne Speed, unveiled at the Paris motor show, features a more potent 6.75-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, bespoke styling inside and out and chassis changes aimed at providing a more focused drive. It will reach the UK later this year, priced from £252,200. Powering the Mulsanne Speed is a reengineered version of the firm’s twinturbo V8 engine. The combustion system has been redesigned, while new variable valve timing and turbocharger controls help swell the
power output to 530bhp and torque to 811lb ft at 1750rpm, up from 505bhp and 752lb ft in the standard Mulsanne. This Euro 6-compliant engine helps shift the Mulsanne Speed from 0-60mph in just 4.9sec and on to a top speed of 190mph, improvements of 0.2sec and 6mph over the base model. Cylinder deactivation features on the engine, allowing it to run as a V4 on light loads. CO2 emissions are 342g/km, down from 393g/km in the standard Mulsanne. The eight-speed automatic gearbox has been recalibrated to improve torque delivery and the connection between car and driver. It also includes a new ‘S’ mode, which keeps the engine speed above 2000rpm to allow quicker turbo response. This Sport driving mode is offered in addition to the existing Bentley and Comfort modes. The new setting stiffens the air suspension and adjusts the steering “for greater feedback and accuracy”, according to the Crewebased manufacturer.

Morrison floated the ball towards the back post and Naismith peeled off Piszczek before getting the deftest of touches to guide it just inside the post from six yards. The unmarked Milik headed over from similar range and Lewandowski was inches away from getting his toe on the end of his strike partner’s low cross as the Poles hit back. Strachan brought on Darren Fletcher and Derby striker Chris Martin for Naismith and Steven Fletcher with 20 minutes left. Manchester United midfielder Fletcher started a sweeping move that ended with Szczesny pushing over Maloney’s powerful strike following an Anya cross. But Poland were soon level. Left-back Artur Jedrzejczyk brought down a crossfield ball and played a pass inside Hutton for Milik to run on to and fire an angled drive past Marshall. Lewandowski then produced some

brilliant skill in a similar position but Marshall dived to push his drive wide.Grzegorz Krychowiak headed wide from a corner seconds later and Poland ramped up the pressure. The fight and determination that has been missing from recent Scotland sides, which Strachan has reinstalled in to the current team, was enough to see out the 90, plus 3 injury minutes. Strachan said after the match ““It confirms what I said after the Germany game, that this is the hardest group in the European Championship. By far. This will go right to the last day.” With John O’Shea grabbing a last minute equaliser in the Republic of Ireland’s game against current world champions Germany, earning the Irish a draw, Strachan could be right. The group of death is wide open with all to play for. But for the first time this Millennium, the Tartan Army might just be dusting off their passports for something more than a qualifier.
Glasgow City F.C : What Dreams are made of would not be pursuing any separate legal action. “These matters have to be dealt with by the appropriate body within the game and it has been,” Saints chairman Eamonn McManus said. “Whilst serving his ban it is critical that Ben is now provided all due personal and professional support. His rehabilitation is now paramount. “During the period of his ban he will be no more than a 25-year-
old boy who will be extremely vulnerable emotionally. “We must assist him in any way that we can and accept him back into the sport. “There is a person behind the player and I am reliably informed by all that it is a good one. He must know that from all. “Lance Hohaia certainly feels that way towards him also. “The sport of rugby league should not be judged by this event but by how it deals with it.”
Trailing 2-0 from the first leg of the last 32, Glasgow City F.C faced an uphill challenge. But as they have proved in the past, they have the talent, the skill and the heart to face any team. In a pulsating match which finished 2-0 to City, before going to extra time and Glasgow City eventually going on to win 3-0, the Girls showed the grit and determination that might just see them all the way through to the Champions league final.
City started well, knowing what needed to be done if they wanted to progress. Morgan Marlborough showed great skill in the 8TH minute, with a great run and setting up team mate Suzanne Lappin whose shot went narrowly over. City had plenty more chances, with a free kick Elish McSorley, just going over the crossbar. Medyk Konin had no plans on taking it easy with plenty heavy challenges going in on the Glasgow outfit. Lappin and Nicola Docherty were showing their value to City in the first half, at the heart of
both defense and going forward. However the Girls went in at half time with their dreams of the last 16 fading, needing three goals to qualify. 14 minutes after the break, the life line came, through Jo Love with an unstoppable strike on goal. This was the boost City needed. Momentum was up and City kept on pressing, some great interchanges between Lappin and Elish McSorley almost got the second they needed. But that eventually came in the 70th minute when Susan Fairlie netted
the equaliser. City pushed on for the final twenty minutes, creating chance after chance but that elusive third goal was not to come. Extra time beckoned. It was a one sided affair from here on in, the Glasgow outfit’s skill and stamina shining through. Only 5 minutes in to extra time Denise O’Sullivn got the goal they craved. City were now in pole position, but were not going to rest on their laurels, they pressed for the killer 4th goal to finish off the game. More chances fell upon City but somehow the safety net of the fourth was not to come. That was
not to matter, 3-2 (after extra time) was enough to see them through to the last 16 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Once City got the first, the result was always going to go Glasgow’s way, the girls set a standard, a benchmark, which most SPL clubs would find hard to reach. The skill, passion and drive that was shown by City is what football is all about. In a week where, finally, Scottish football is on the up, Glasgow City F.C just added to that feel good factor in the country.

on track for France 2016 Conor Gildea Scotland grabbed a share of the spoils in a pulsating 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw to keep their hopes of reaching Euro 2016 on track.Gordon Strachan, who sprung a prematch surprise when he brought in Steven Whittaker at left-back to replace Andrew Robertson, who had impressed in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Georgia. With Ikechi Anya overcoming a calf strain, that meant two changes as Gordon Greer came in as expected for Grant Hanley, who suffered a knee injury at Ibrox. Greer had played in a 1-0 friendly win in this same Stadion Narodowy in March, when the hosts were without star man Robert Lewandowski. Poland came into this on a high after beating world champions Germany at the weekend, though, it was the Scots who started brightly only to shoot themselves in the foot, the Poles, who made three changes, accepted a gift to take the lead though. Hutton had time and space to deal with a misplaced pass on the edge of his box but he took a heavy touch and gifted a free shot to Maczynski, who fired in off the post from inside the ‘D’. The Poles lead wasn’t to last for long though, Steven Fletcher opened Poland up with a brilliant crossfield ball to Anya, who killed it instantly
and cut the ball back for Maloney. The Wigan player side-footed a firsttime finish from 12 yards which just squeezed past the hand of the diving Wojciech Szczesny. Scotland survived some nervy moments just after the equaliser. David Marshall fumbled both an ambitious strike from Grosicki and the midfielder’s resulting corner, before Waldemar Sobota just failed to connect with a dangerous ball across the face of goal that had Whittaker scrambling. But Strachan’s men looked composed on the ball inside the Polish half and kept possession for decent spells without creating any more first-half chances. They were almost caught out before the break though when Hutton was beaten by a ball inside him. Subota slipped the ball past the onrushing Marshall and towards Lewandowski but Greer managed to clear. Milik missed two good chances in the opening two minutes of the second half, first miskicking after good skill inside the box from Lukasz Piszczek and then steering the ball over following Kamil Glik’s header. The visitors survived another scare when Scott Brown cleared a near-post cross after Grosicki appeared to foul Anya when the Watford winger initially foiled a counter-attack. The Poles had stepped up a gear and looked dangerous on every attack but they were stunned in the 57th minute after Maloney won a free-kick 10 yards inside the Poland half. Continued on page 39
