This course will cover many aspects of transparent and opaque water based media including inks, gouache, acrylic and watercolour paint. There will be an emphasis on exploring a range of contemporary and traditional techniques and applications. An important aspect of this course will also include the study of artists who work in this media. Students will be encouraged to gather ideas from as varied and experimental a range of sources as possible depending on the individual. The aim of this course is to develop each person’s own style and handling of the material whether working within a representational or nonrepresentational format.

Sculpting in clay directly from the nude life model, this hands-on course is designed to broaden your observation skills and teach you various handbuilding techniques. Considering the qualities of form and exploring ways to convey body mass and proportions, you will develop an understanding of how to accurately render the human form three dimensionally. This class is suitable for a wide variety of students, from beginner to more experienced sculptors.

Drawing and painting from sculpture is an integral part of the artist’s training, the gold standard in the study of light and shadow. Recently restored, the cast collection now offers a rare opportunity for students to work from some of art histories preeminent sculptures here at the GSA.

This course will introduce you to various techniques for creating leaded and stained glass windows. You will cover the processes of cutting glass, painting, staining, etching, leading, fusing and slumping. Exploring ideas and technical details through drawing is an important component of the course as is sampling and testing the boundaries of this fluid material. Tuition will be delivered through demonstrations and one-to-one guidance. All equipment and basis materials such as lead and paint are provided but students are asked to supply their own glass and drawing materials. (There will be some glass stocked in the department that can be used for initial sampling). Beginners and experienced alike are welcome, however the Wednesday option will be more suited to those who have existing skills in this subject.

Illuminated by a stable light source, the cast presents a stationary subject where the complexities of human form, resolved by the sculptor, are organised with greater clarity than in drawing from life. For this reason cast drawing is seen as the entry point to the study of painting. In an environment which is conducive to study, this course allows students to progress at their own pace, working up a series of studies culminating in a master drawing at the end of the first term. The second term introduces monochromatic oil painting. Students are provided with one to one support in the basic handling of paint and working procedures.
