QUALITY THROUGH QUALIFICATIONS

The election’s historic result must draw a line under years of crippling uncertainty that has been so toxic for UK construction, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) in response to the General Election result.

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “The new Conservative Government has a golden opportunity to sort out Brexit and set out its new vision for the UK. Building the homes and infrastructure that this country needs has to be a key priority to help drive the economy forward.”

“Building the homes and infrastructure that this country needs has to be a key priority.”

“The Government needs to back the nation’s army of small builders, by delivering on the promised £3bn National Skills Fund, investing in quality through a licensing scheme for the whole UK construction industry, and supporting local builders to retrofit the millions of homes that need to be upgraded to low carbon.” Berry concluded: “The Government needs to back the nation’s army of small builders, by delivering on the promised £3bn National Skills Fund, investing in quality through a licensing scheme for the whole UK construction industry, and supporting local builders to retrofit the millions of homes that need to be upgraded to low carbon.” READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0001

JANUARY 2020

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

IT’S 2020!

Happy New Year to everyone! And, just maybe, it can be a happier time now that the political uncertainty has been removed.

Whichever way anyone voted, just the fact that the political stagnation is at an end may mean we can move into the New Year with some optimism. With the £ on the rise and share prices, too, hopefully it will give the homeowner and businesses the confidence to spend again. Are we out of the mire yet? Almost certainly not as there are many negotiations to tolerate before we get released from our EU obligations but at least something can now happen and, perhaps, other important issues can move up the government’s agenda. And will all those promises made in manifestos and in offthe-cuff remarks come to fruition? Nah! I’m sure we all feel that the election was littered with…..let’s call them ‘half truths’ as opposed to outright lies! Perhaps, savings, pensions and stored-up wealth of any sort are safe for a while! The next bit of fun for everyone is ‘Wee Krankie’ and what happens with our Scottish friends. I do struggle to understand democracy whereby you have a vote in order to make a decision only to demand having another if you don’t like the answer. Perhaps ‘Wee Krankie’ has a cunning plan. If she keeps harping on about independence we’ll all get so fed up that when she makes a demand that the vote should be nationwide, and not just in Scotland, everyone south of the border will vote for Scottish independence, say good riddance, and build a wall to separate us….er, I think someone called Hadrian did that and how did that work out? Actually, pretty well! Publius Aelius Hadrianus is believed to have started construction around 122 BC and it was completed in about 6 years - the last evidence of Roman presence being around 410 BC. A nice business opportunity may exist then. They’ll need a lot of windows for the ‘housesteads’ that house the troops at intervals along the wall although, now, it will be an army of civil servants with expenses, and pensions, cars (electric!) and all the other trappings of a coddled

Conducting some research and surveys, and reporting on the findings, has long been a way for companies to cobble together a press release and get some coverage and we all see them, on a regular basis, throughout the national press. Generally speaking, this tack works and they often make interesting reading even if the sample size is not declared and the survey amounts to having a chat with a few pals in the pub. And I called Danny Williams ‘cynical’! Anyway, I came across one the other day that referred to the ‘Most Unprofessional Tradespeople in Britain’. It states that homeowners always seem to have a difficult time finding tradespeople for home improvement jobs: those that are reliable and trustworthy. In fact, it says, the UK economy is missing out on over £6 billion a year from Brits putting off required home improvements because of the fear they might hire ‘shoddy’ tradespeople, according to statistics from the ‘Federation of Master Builders (FMB)’. Having said that, it goes on to list the trades that are deemed most unprofessional and these include Kitchen Fitters, Tilers, Builders, Roofers, Drain and Sewerage Specialists, Painters and Decorators, Bathroom Fitters, Plumbers and Carpenters. All these are deemed more unprofessional than the next category: Window Glaziers. I’m not sure quite how they’ve worked the percentages from a declared sample of 1,644 people (big pub!) but, nevertheless, it’s nice to see that we are a long way down from the most unprofessional trades! Part of the survey was about identifying what actions of a tradesperson made them ‘unprofessional’ and the highest vote went to people nor turning up when they are meant to. Overcharging and poor workmanship came next, followed by the amount of breaks workman took and being constantly on their ‘phones. The gripe at the bottom of the list was taking advantage of hospitality and, basically, asking for too many hot drinks and biscuits!

Q&A: VICTORIAN SLIDERS

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

Q&A: ANDY JONES GROUP MANAGING DIRECTOR

WHY 2020 IS SHAPING UP TO BE VICTORIAN SLIDERS’ MOST AMBITIOUS YEAR YET

Andy, you’ve been at Victorian Sliders for a few months now. How are you settling in? I’ve had a fantastic time so far, thanks for asking. I’m delighted to say I’ve been welcomed with open arms. Victorian Sliders couldn’t have become the runaway success story it is today without a remarkable team of people behind it – and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together in the years ahead.

So, what brought you to Ammanford? It’s no secret that I wasn’t initially looking for a job at a window manufacturer – I wanted to explore other opportunities. But when I was approached about a role at Victorian Sliders, I was intrigued. I’d heard a lot about the company over the years – people often commented that it was a very large, impressive set-up they had here. So partly out of courtesy, and, to be honest, partly out of nosiness, I agreed to come down and discuss it. It turns out the rumours were true – in fact, if anything they’d underestimated the scale. And I was so impressed that I left that meeting as Group Managing Director.

What does your role entail? Over the past fifteen years, the Victorian Sliders team have put in a huge amount of time and effort laying the groundwork for growth. We’ve designed an innovative window system. We’ve built a highly efficient factory. We’ve invested extensively in cuttingedge technology and product innovation. Now, as Group Managing Director, it’s my intention to take the lead on overall business strategy and marketing, expanding our route to market and using the experience that I’ve developed over the past 33 years to take us into the next phase of our history.

You’ve mentioned new products – I hear you’ve got some big news on that front. That’s right. We’ve developed a brand-new VS system which we believe will revolutionise

4

the market and sit alongside our existing award winning EcoSlide offering, covering all aspects of the market, and helping take vertical sliding windows from niche back to mainstream. We’re also looking to develop our product portfolio so watch this space!

Niche - to mass market - really?

Now, thanks to products like EcoSLIDE, we can offer all the advantages of PVCu casements while helping restore buildings to their former glory. In the past, the price of vertical sliders has always been a difficult sell to ever-demanding end-users. However, with EcoSLIDE, Victorian Sliders has turned that on its head.

In some ways, that’s a big statement, in others it isn’t – nearly 40% of the existing housing stock started life with sash windows installed. Over the past 40 years, they’ve been replaced with cheap PVCu windows that claimed to be better thermally performing, maintenance-free and more secure. However, this was at the cost of the aesthetic appearance of the building.

With over £10m invested in state of the art machinery, a totally integrated supply chain including its own recycling plant, own mixing plant, own extrusion plant, and own hardware plant, coupled with huge investment in automation, Victorian Sliders can now offer sliding sash windows at costs comparable to that of a quality casement window.

All this, combined with the trend for consumers to treat windows like furniture rather than just something to keep the weather out, means I truly believe we’ll see a major resurgence in the not-so-humble sliding sash window.

So, you’re planning on doing all that in one year? Absolutely. And we’re going to make big investments in the factory, too. Over the last five years, we’ve spent roughly £10m on new equipment. This year, we’ll be spending a further £1.8 million – partly on upgrading our glass line, partly on our recycling centre and upgrading our mixing facility. We want to be recycling 25-30% of our waste uPVC by the end of 2020. I know these are some very ambitious goals. But it’s only by being ambitious, and working around the clock to make those goals a reality, that Victorian Sliders has got to where it is today. DOORS

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

A STABLE END TO THE YEAR FROM FORCE 8

HS TRADE INCREASES COMPOSITE DOOR CAPACITY AND IMPROVES EFFICIENCY WITH DISTINCTION’S PREPPED PRODUCT SERVICE

The unique Smooth finish Tudor Stable Door from Force 8 has been a runaway success for the company. Launched at The FIT Show earlier this year, the composite door has proved very popular, particularly with property development companies. “Traditionally this style of door has a timber grain finish, but with all the demand for the smooth aluminium look-alike doors, it seemed the natural progression”, comments Dennis Sumner, managing director of Force 8. Interest has accrued from developers looking for something more contemporary, rather than just the standard timber look stable door, particularly in the new build sector, where anthracite grey has proved very popular. Force 8 added an in-house paint facility to their Stockport factory earlier this year, giving them the ability to spray the door and frame at the same time, giving a perfect colour match. In addition to the above, the Force 8 Stable door can be fabricated to open outwards as well as inwards, giving it a unique versatility that as far as the company understands is not available from any other manufacturer. One of the main selling points of the door is the bespoke locking system, which delivers impeccable security. Featuring a hook and anti-lift pin on both the top and bottom leaf, along with a combination of hook and deadbolt centre cases. The new lock has been carefully designed by Yale to complement both modern and traditional

Lincolnshire based window and door manufacturer, HS Trade, has revealed that it has benefitted from an increase in the capacity of its composite door offering, combined with less stock holding and a saving in labour costs, since signing up for Distinction Doors’ prepped product service at the start of the year.

Michael Gromett, owner of HS Trade, commented: “We had a discussion with the Distinction team and came to the conclusion that if we took advantage of the company’s prepped service it would allow us a hassle free option to offer glazed and edge-banded doors, as well as increase the capacity of our door division in the process.

HS Trade has been a customer of Distinction Doors for 10 years, and while the company has always praised its longstanding composite door supplier for the high standard of its product and service, it says the decision to switch to prepped doors has not only greatly improved efficiencies and reduced cost, but has in turn helped to further improve the service offering to its own customers.

“It was a decision that has really paid dividends,” he continued. “The composite door sector is an increasingly competitive one, but this is the reason that we have always sourced our products from Distinction Doors. The overall service from Distinction is excellent, from the online ordering process, all the way to delivery, and the fact that our doors are now supplied glazed and edge-banded has made it even easier for us to offer the best composite door in the marketplace.” Distinction has reported that sales of its prepped doors, supplied complete with its high-quality glazed units, have seen a significant increase across 2019, a result of more customers taking advantage of its full prepping, painting and glazing facilities. The leading composite door specialist, which introduced its own range of exclusive glazing units three years ago, has recently increased shifts and invested in equipment in order to meet current and future demand.

stable door styles in the Force 8 range. Add to this a PAS 24 and a perfect colour match frame, and you have a winning combination. “We have brought all our knowledge and skills to this door system and believe that we have produced probably the best Stable Door on the market to date”, comments Dennis. NO WELDS, NO WAIT, NO HASSLE Sourcing a company to supply you with a matching arched door and frame is not difficult, as the door company will outsource the arched frame to a specialist, who will bend a section of profile and send it back. All this sounds quite simple, but in practice it can create long lead times and a whole host of problems associated with bringing different offsite manufactured elements together. Combine this with colour matching between door and frame and you start to see how easy this process can unravel. As far as we are aware, Force 8 is the only company in the

6

UK manufacturing Arched frames and composite doors in the same factory, at the same time, including an inhouse paint facility. This can cut leads time by over half as there is no outsourcing, which has items going back and forth before any assembly can even start. Another advantage is the door and frame can be checked throughout the process for a perfect fit, which is impossible if you are outsourcing elements. This is not forgetting the unique one length bending process pioneered by Force 8, giving a weld free arch. “Our complete arched frame and door package adds up to a distinct advantage for installers

and fabricators, why bother with all the hassle and possible problems and delays. Using Force 8 for your arched frames and doors is by far the easiest option,” comments

Dennis Sumner, Managing Director. Backing this up is 30 years of expertise and a state of the art manufacturing facility at their Stockport

factory, which has had constant investment over the years. “If you are an installer or a fabricator, you are welcome to come and visit our factory

to see our manufacturing process first hand,” comment Dennis. “We work with a wide variety of companies both large and small. “It makes good business sense to outsource a specialist process rather than deal with it in-house, but rather than just the door, frame or arch, why not the whole product as it’s quicker and can be more cost-effective. The door and frame will even be routed ready for your hardware, saving time and effort,” comment Dennis. For further details, visit the Force 8 website at: www.force8.uk. GREEN BUILDING STORE USES SWISSPACER TO ACHIEVE PASSIVHAUS STANDARD Green Building Store supplies a range of specialist products and services for low energy building projects and actively promotes the Passivhaus standard in the UK. Warm edge spacers play an important role in helping windows achieve this highly energy efficient standard. The company has specified SWISSPACER’s top performing warm edge bars in its windows since 2010. When Green Building Store developed Ultra, a range of triple glazed windows certified to Passivhaus standard, it needed a spacer bar with exceptional thermal

performance. SWISSPACER ULTIMATE was the obvious choice - a market-leading spacer bar with Psi values up to 0.029 W/mK and a correspondingly low U-value for windows and façades. Like all SWISSPACER spacers, ULTIMATE is tried and tested for outstanding performance and long-lasting results. SWISSPACER is used in around 90% of all international Passivhaus installations, and ULTIMATE was the first spacer bar to be certified by the Passivhaus Institute. Chayley Collis, Communications Manager

of the Green Building Store comments: “All our windows are aimed at customers who want to improve the energy efficiency of their home. The key question is how much they want to improve; if customers are aiming for Passivhaus standard or very near, we recommend our Ultra range. All the windows in our triple glazed Ultra range incorporate SWISSPACER’s ULTIMATE warm edge spacer bar for maximum thermal performance.” Karl-Theo Roes, SWISSPACER Head of Market Development Europe adds: “The Passivhaus idea was and is revolutionary, and has had a considerable impact on the European market over the past 20 years. But while the use of triple glazing and building to the Passivhaus standard is widely adopted in a number of other countries, the UK still has some way to go. We’re proud that Green Building Store, which is actively promoting this concept in the UK, has selected SWISSPACER for all their Passivhaus certified windows.” Passivhaus is the fastest growing energy performance standard in the world. It aims to dramatically reduce the need for space heating and cooling, and typically cuts energy use and CO2 emissions by a factor of 10. Passivhaus buildings are comfortable and require minimal heating with a space heating demand predicted to be 15 kWh/m2/year. VICTORIAN SLIDERS SET THE TONE FOR 120 HERITAGE-LOOK HOMES Hundreds of Victorian Sliders sash windows are gracing a stunning coastal housing development in Seamill, West Kirkbride. Just minutes from the Firth of Clyde, and with dramatic views of the Isle of Arran, the Chapleton estate takes its inspiration from the Scottish domestic architecture of the 17th, 18th and mid-19th centuries. The range of two, three, four and five-bedroom houses it encompasses have been solidly built

from natural materials to give them an authentic feel – and housebuilder Hope Homes wanted them to have windows that complimented that vintage character. “We chose Victorian Sliders for two key reasons,” comments Anne Hope of Hope Homes. “First, because the windows balance the traditional aesthetics we were looking for with modern performance, and second, because they were able to supply us with high

volumes at a consistently high quality. “The development includes over 120 houses in all – 35 affordable, and around 90 privately-owned – and the vast majority include Victorian Sliders windows.” Andy Jones, Victorian Sliders Group Managing Director, comments: “It’s hugely gratifying to see our windows featured in such an ambitious, picturesque development. “We’re one of the only sash window manufacturers in Europe who could supply a development on this scale, and we’re delighted with the results. We look forward to collaborating with Hope Homes again in future.” For more information visit www.victoriansliders.co.uk or call 01269 846200. READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0013

SPECTUS DELIVERS REQUIRED SPECIFICATIONS FOR NEW BUILD RETIREMENT VILLAGE Over 300 Spectus Elite 70 System windows were used in the construction of a new build retirement village in Chorley town centre. Chorley Council commissioned a 65-apartment retirement village to provide those aged 55 and above with an independent living space with access to care and support. The development, Primrose Gardens, is in the centre of Chorley and is part of the Council’s strategic masterplan for the town centre. The development partner for the build was Eric Wright Construction. The window contract on the build was awarded to Spectus Approved Window contractor JADE Window and Door Specialists, a family run company based in Batley with over 25 years’ experience in the industry. The 65 apartments had over 300 windows in total manufactured in anthracite grey

on the external face and white internally. Thermal efficiency was a particular focus to keep running costs on the apartments to a minimum. The Elite 70 System from Spectus was able to meet this requirement. It is a fivechamber system, which increases thermal performance, meaning it is capable of achieving a Window Energy Rating of A+ and U-Values to 0.8W/m2K. The system is Secured by Design accredited where a high level of security is a requirement. Primrose Gardens’ town centre location meant careful programming and logistics planning was required to ensure minimum disruption and safe access. The construction was also on a reduced timeframe to enable Chorley Council to start delivering services as quickly as possible. JADE Window and Door Specialists are an experienced commercial contractor, so the team was able to take these factors into account and still deliver a high-quality installation to the timescale. The construction was completed on schedule in Autumn 2019. Tel: 0808 101 4143 - www.spectus.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0014

WINDOWS

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

PROFILE 22’S OPTIMA WINDOWS USED IN HIGH QUALITY RETIREMENT HOUSING DEVELOPMENT Profile 22’s Optima windows were specified in the development of 26 one- and two-bedroom apartments in a retirement development in Upper Norwood, London. Lewis House is a development from McCarthy & Stone, the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder, and included 97 windows and 26 door and sightlight combinations. The project was undertaken by Profile 22 Approved Window Installer Newview Homes Ltd. The company is one of the largest installation companies in the South East and is the one of the few UK installation companies to hold both ISO 9001 for Quality Management and ISO 14001 for Environmental Management. The window specification required a U value of 1.4 wm2/k on all windows and Secured by Design accreditation on ground floor and easily accessible first floor windows. Acoustic glazing was also required because Lewis House is situated on a busy road so traffic noise needed to be

minimised. Visually, the local authority had requested a grey exterior to give a modern appearance and provide a close match to aluminium. Newview used Profile 22’s Optima 70mm casement windows in smooth slate grey on white with 28mm Low E sealed glass units. Secured by Design accredited windows were fitted where required. Michele Wietscher, Commercial and Finance Director at Newview, said: “The Optima profile is always well-received because of its ability to meet demanding requirements at a competitive price.” The windows were manufactured by Newview’s long term fabrication partner, Emplas Window Systems Ltd, one of the UK’s largest window and door fabricators. Newview is an experienced commercial installer used to working on new build developments so was well-placed to ensure installation ran smoothly and coordinated with all other trades on site. Everyone involved is delighted with the finished result. Senjey Sehmi, Senior Technical Manager South East, McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles, said: “We are very happy with the appearance of the windows, as they give a clean and contemporary look, which is in keeping with the architectural style of the building.”

POLYFRAME LAUNCHES MARKET LEADING VERTICAL SLIDER Polyframe has upgraded its extensive portfolio of PVCu products with the introduction of the new Imagine Vertical Sliding Sash from VEKA. The move will bring new sales opportunities for Polyframe customers who want to make the most of the rising demand for vertical sliding sash windows. Richard Lee, PVCu category director at Polyframe, explains: “Vertical Sliders now account for around 10% of the market, with share increasing year on year. We’re very pleased to add the VEKA Imagine VS to our range – it’s the best vertical slider out there as it captures all of the key design features of a traditional timber window, combined with the practicality and performance of a modern PVCu window. We’ve had great feedback from our customers so far and they are telling us it’s easy to quote, easy to sell and really easy to fit”. already in place for windows and doors. However, there are other safety concerns for consideration, such as fire and glass safety.

From electrical and gas provision, to the products selected for installation, safety should be considered throughout the entire process. Here, Nick Cowley, managing director of PVCu windows and doors manufacturer Euramax, explains what to consider when selecting fenestration products and why safety is key.

Composite materials are made from a variety of constituent substances with different physical of chemical properties, which, when combined, produce a new material with individual characteristics. Composite materials can include PVCu, fibreglass and wood. The safety benefits of composite materials don’t stop high strength and durability, as composite doors can be designed to contain and withstand fire too.

windows for high rise buildings, re-glazing, cleaning and maintenance must all be considered. However, above all else, safety is paramount. Fixed windows are windows that do not open at all, which significantly helps to reduce the risk of injury or death. If someone working in a high-rise office building tried to open or close a window, for instance, there is risk of injury if they have to lean out to reach the window handle.

Dependent on the project, buildings may sometimes require specialised styles of windows. For instance, fixed pane windows are often used in high rise buildings, such as flats and offices. When selecting

Ensuring that the windows you choose are also fitted with safety glass will provide an extra level of safety. Toughened or tempered glass, which is the term used for glass that has been heated to more than 600 degrees

Designed to be as fitter-friendly as possible, Polyframe installers have been impressed with a number of innovative features. For example, its flush fitting outerframe sits neatly against the existing plaster line to eliminate the need for notching or trimming the plaster – thus saving time and money. Imagine’s hallmark characteristic is its outer balance chamber, which is co-extruded in black on all colour combinations. This makes a striking design feature and also means there’s no need for painting which improves the look of the product and gives a durable and consistent finish.

BUILDERS AND ROOFERS AMONG MOST ‘UNPROFESSIONAL’ TRADESPEOPLE Tradespeople are essential when it comes to renovating/repairing a property. Yet, homeowners always seem to have a difficult time finding those that are reliable and trustworthy. • Kitchen fitters are the most unprofessional tradespeople according to 73% of Brits • 65% think builders are unprofessional, whilst 60% feel the same about roofers • It seems floorers are the most professional, with only 22% classifying them as unprofessional • 81% of Brits feel tradespeople not turning up when arranged/agreed is the most unprofessional thing they can do • Interestingly, 76% do not appreciate being overcharged and 73% take issue with poor workmanship In fact, the UK economy is missing out on over £6 billion a year from Brits putting off required home improvements because of the fear they might hire ‘shoddy’ tradespeople, according to statistics from the ‘Federation of Master Builders (FMB)’. Interested in the perception of tradespeople, bathroom and shower specialists Showerstoyou.co.uk surveyed 1,644 Brits to discover who they believe to be the most ‘unprofessional’ tradespeople. In the definition of ‘unprofessional’, we asked those surveyed to take into account the quality of work, price/rates charged, manners, punctuality and communication

skills of tradespeople. Showerstoyou.co.uk found that the majority of Brits crown kitchen fitters (73%) as the most unprofessional tradespeople. Thereafter, 69% think tilers are unprofessional. Whilst 65% feel the same about builders. At the other end, it seems floorers are the most professional tradespeople – with only 22% classifying them as unprofessional. Slightly above, just 25% consider heating/ ventilation/air condition (HVAC) engineers to be unprofessional. Additionally, those surveyed were asked to identify the actions taken by tradespeople they deem to be the most unprofessional. From this, Showerstoyou found that a tradesperson not turning up when arranged/agreed (81%) is the most unprofessional thing they could do. Subsequently, 76% do not appreciate being overcharged. Slightly below, 73% take issue with poor workmanship. When on-site, 68% of Brits don’t like it when a tradesperson frequently takes breaks and 65% share the same sentiment about a tradesperson who is consistently on their phone. On the other end, 42% get annoyed when a tradesperson takes advantage of their good hospitality (e.g. asking for too many hot drinks/biscuits etc.). READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0022

NEW SPECIFICATION GUIDE – VEKA UK IS ON SAME PAGE AS INSTALLERS, FABRICATORS AND SPECIFIERS Industry-leading PVCu systems supplier VEKA UK has launched a brand new specification guide providing manufacturers, installers and specifiers with comprehensive information on all the products within the VEKA UK portfolio. For a brand that is world renowned for both its heritage and its commitment to innovation, the timing of the launch is particularly apt; it coincides with the global VEKA Group’s 50th anniversary, and a cutting edge new www.veka.co.uk website. Marketing Director Dawn Stockell explains: “Here at VEKA UK, we know our products are perfect for every project, because they are tested to all expected quality and safety accreditations - but more importantly - they must meet our own exceptionally high standards. “Furthermore, as a customer-centric company, having the ‘perfect product’ is just one part of the service; the second part is presenting all that product information within the ideal package, and that’s exactly what we’ve done with both our new specification guide and the new VEKA website. These resources have made it even easier to specify our industry-leading PVCu systems. “The guide is over 100 pages and contains everything you need to know about all systems and products within the VEKA, Halo and Imagine brand ranges. From indepth technical data, technical drawings, and performance results, to information about our technical support services. “And, for those that prefer a ‘pick and mix’ approach, individual pages can be downloaded by product through the new veka.co.uk site, so customers can effectively put together a bespoke reference guide for their most-used systems. “The specification guide itself is a joy to read. I’m really proud of how we’ve managed to fit so much valuable content into such a clear and straightforward document. And, I believe the support that

complements the spec guide is second to none. Our technical team are only a phone call or an email away and can assist with CAD design, as well as BIM, and wind load or energy calculations (to name just a few of our services), in order to help you specify the perfect system for your project. “The new specification guide comes following the launch of SPECTRAL; the innovative ultramatt finish, unveiled at this year’s FIT Show and shortlisted for ‘Product of the Year’ at the G19 Awards. This means details can be found throughout the guide of all systems that can be specified with the new finish, as well as full details of SPECTRAL on page 14-15. This extraordinary product can be used to elevate the look and even feel of a window or door frame. “VEKA UK systems offer immense yet intelligent choice. In developing the Variations colour range, we not only focused on getting the colour and texture of every foil just right, we also looked at how we could deliver these choices with swift lead times that work for your project. It may be a small detail - but one that means we carry the largest UK stock holding covering 4000 SKUs. “The guide’s combination of line drawings, photographs of products in situ, test reports and results, alongside foil options, specification and sizing - with real life case studies - mean the reader has the information and the inspiration needed to perfect every project. “Putting together such a comprehensive guide was a challenge to say the least, but one that was well worth it; this ‘specification Bible’ is the ultimate reference guide to everything VEKA. It is both exhaustive and easy to use, and I’m looking forward to hearing what customers have to say about it.” Sign up or log in to download your copy at veka.co.uk. READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0024

INSTALLER MAKES THE RIGHT CHOICE WITH CUSTOMADE DIGITAL PACKAGE An installer is reaping the benefits of Customade Group’s new digital marketing package, having generated dozens of qualified customer leads and achieved an astonishing return on investment of 1420%. Glasgow-based Right Choice Homes was one of the UK’s first installers to buy-in to Customade’s tailored programme, which was launched at the FIT Show last May. In the first two months, it transformed Right Choice Homes’ digital presence and helped the firm to achieve a very healthy return on a modest investment. Barrie Knox, owner of Right Choice Homes, explains: “We’d been using traditional methods, like local press advertising and door to door leafleting to promote our business throughout Scotland, but we knew that we really needed to boost our online presence to win more customers. We’re not digital experts though and needed some technical support to get things moving. “Naturally, we were very interested to hear about the new package from Customade that promised to bring all the technology and know-how we needed to enhance our image, reach new prospects and deliver those all-important leads. We decided to invest in it almost immediately and we are so pleased that we did – within weeks we were generating leads and converting a very high proportion of them into profitable work.” Customade Group’s specialist team carried out a full ‘digital fitness’ audit and developed a bespoke package to quickly achieve measurable results for Right Choice. This included website optimisation, web analytics and a targeted advertising campaign to capture new customers via social media. Right Choice also invested in Customade’s Quote-To-Win app – an easy to use app that has been designed to help convert quotes to sales 24/7.

14

“The Quote-To-Win app has really delivered for us,” says Barrie. “It puts all our leads and quotes in one place and helps us organise and follow them up quickly and efficiently. The app is so easy to use because it does all the hard work behind the scenes and we can use it anywhere and at any time of day. “Getting leads in and then converting them is a challenge for any installer, but we’ve overcome this hurdle with the new app and a greater online presence. In the first two months, our lead campaign netted more than £20,000 worth of business from a very modest investment – we’re very pleased with the results so far.” Right Choice Homes was one of the first installers in the UK to invest in the industry-leading digital programme from Customade. The end to end package improves installers’ online presence and drives leads to help them work productively and achieve growth in a rapidly changing market. With less time needed to administer quotes and leads, installers have more time to convert them and concentrate on profitable business. To find out more about Customade Group and its managed business support package, call 01453 707272 or visit www.customade.co.uk. Customade Group operates nationwide and employs 1100 people in multiple manufacturing sites across the UK. The group includes REAL Aluminium (aluminium), Atlas Glazed Roof Solutions (glazed roofs), Virtuoso Doors (composite and PVCu door panels), Polyframe (PVC-u), Hourglass Seal (sealed glass units), Stevenswood Trade Centre (trade counters) and Fineline Aluminium (specialist glazing).

QUICKSLIDE INVESTS IN FUTURE-PROOF MACHINERY Quickslide’s Brighouse factory has recently seen the addition of two URBAN corner cleaning machines and two quad welders following an investment of £350,000 in its factory infrastructure. A leading manufacturer of made-to-measure sliding sash windows, bi-folding doors, casement windows and doors in PVCu and aluminium, Quickslide says the spend is part of a £2m investment plan which spans 12 months. This centres around increasing capacity while improving quality and efficiency. URBAN machines are known for their machining quality and excellent precision and, says Quickslide Managing Director Ben Weber, will increase throughput at key points of the company’s fabrication process. The robust quad welders ensure reliability and repeatability while the corner cleaning machines allow efficient processing and cleaning of window profile after the welding cycle. Ben affirmed how much Quickslide has grown over the last decade and how the fabricator is now manufacturing close to 1,000 windows a week. He explained: “We have installed the Schirmer ‘Rolls Royce’ of cutting centres

and machinery like this is certainly something that we needed to make the appropriate level of investment in. We have already made huge strides in system and product innovation and this latest step is all about future-proofing the business for the next five to ten years.” Chairman Adrian Barraclough added: “Quickslide is constantly looking at ways to remain at the forefront when it comes to technology and the advancements in product variety and quality it offers. By ensuring that we continue with regular

investments in high quality, modern machinery means that our customers will always be able to expect the finest quality products, for the right price, delivered within a sensible timeframe. “Our investment reinforces our belief that British manufacturing is some of the best in the world. We’re as proud of that as we are of our award-winning products.” www.quickslide.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0027

Gerald Allen, Marketing Manager at Epwin Window Systems, said: “We are very excited to be the only systems house to currently have this latest technology. Together with our investment in two new twin lines earlier in 2019, it will help us set a new standard for foiling in the industry.” The Luna R is able to wrap even the most complex of profiles perfectly. In addition, the machine reduces set up times,

providing additional capacity and product accuracy. Gerald commented: “As coloured profiles continue to grow in popularity, fabricators and installers will need to match customers’ increasing expectations. For any fabricator and installer wanting to capitalise on the opportunities that colour offers we will soon be unveiling our new colour offering to help our customers tap into the growing trend for colour which offers a powerful selling point. The Luna R means that Epwin Window Systems will be supplying the state-of-the-art in coloured profile quality.”

Epwin Window Systems has a long track record of continuous investment in its systems and processes to ensure it continues to meet the needs of its customers. BRISANT SECURE IS 18TH FASTEST GROWING UK BUSINESS

FOUNDER OF MRA MARKETING HONOURED AT BUILDERS’ MERCHANTS AWARDS

Brisant-Secure is the eighteenth fastest growing company in the UK, according to the Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100, published on Sunday December 1st 2019. Brisant believes this is down to two factors. The Fast Track 100 is measured over a threeyear period. During the years of this report homeowners have become more aware of their home security weaknesses and after doing very little research, they realise that unskilled intruders can be in their home in under 10 seconds. They then start searching for the best protection possible. The Sunday Times reports Brisant’s Ultion and Lock Lock sales growth at 111% every year for these 3 years. “What separates our products is designing them to achieve as much as possible and not down to a standard. Whether it be doing a

1,100,000 lock cycles when only 100,000 are needed, 8000+ weather test hours when 240 are needed or having the only Sold Secure accredited door handle on the market”, says CEO Nick Dutton. “We then provide really powerful tools for our customers to relay this message to their customers. There is homeowner demand for the best, and when they realise how little the cost difference is between normal and best, they buy it.” It’s not just business growth in which this is reflected. Mike was presented with his award by Dame Kelly Holmes MBE, and Matthew Carter, Sales Director of H+H UK and Award Sponsor

Mike Rigby, founder of full service marketing agency MRA Marketing, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the recent Builders’ Merchants Awards. With more than 40 years’ experience in the construction industry, Mike was recognised for his contribution to merchanting. Prior to setting up MRA Marketing, Mike worked for Dulux Paints, a national builders’ merchants (UBM Building Supplies) and was also MD of a small fast-growing listed plc. Since launching MRA in 1991 and growing it to be the UK’s no.1 construction marketing company, Mike has continued to be very active in the merchanting industry. He is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants, a longstanding judge of the Builders’ Merchants Awards and a keen supporter and advocate of sector initiatives, including the WCoBM #BuildACareerWithoutLimits campaign to highlight the career opportunities in merchanting.

Perhaps Mike’s biggest impact on the sector has been his development of the Builders’ Merchant Building Index (BMBI). After identifying a lack of a credible measure of RMI activity in the UK, Mike came up with the BMBI and launched it in 2015. Acting as a brand of the BMF, BMBI uses data from GfK’s ground-breaking Builders Merchants Panel, which analyses data from Name: Tel: over 80% of generalist builders’ merchants’ sales throughout Great Britain. In addition Address: to providing vital market intelligence, BMBI offers a platform for the industry and the Postcode: BMF to build awareness and understanding of markets and leading brands. Email:

22

One of Mike’s aims was for BMBI to become a recognised index for construction by

Government, economists, business and the media. In February 2019 the Sunday Times mentioned BMBI in reference to Brexit preparations, and the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy lists BMBI as one of its sources. Commenting on his win, Mike says: “This award is very unexpected. I didn’t realise it was possible for someone who is not a builders’ merchant to win! The merchanting sector has been hugely important and influential throughout my career, so to be recognised in this way is very special. I also have to pay tribute to the team we’ve built at MRA, because it is a team effort – it has to be.” Clearly a popular winner, Mike enjoyed a standing ovation from the attendees at the awards ceremony on 22nd November as he was presented with his award by Dame Kelly Holmes MBE. “The lifetime achievement award is a very prestigious industry award, so I was extremely proud when my team asked if they could put Mike forward for it,” says Lucia Di Stazio, Managing Director, MRA Marketing. “Mike’s knowledge and experience of markets and his strategic insight has transformed many businesses in the sector. His exceptional drive, his overriding commitment to the construction industry, our customers, and our team, make Mike truly deserving of this award.” MRA Marketing is a full service agency, specialising in helping companies grow in construction, building materials and home improvement markets. COLD CALLING

DANNY WILLIAMS

‘COLD CALLING’

GQA SIGNS UP

TO FIT SHOW 2020

Each month our special correspondent Danny Williams* replies to a reader’s letter...

OK Danny, A Landslide Victory for the Conservatives and Brexit now on its way. What are your thoughts now these key issues, at least, are a certainty? Chris Champion, Editor, Glass News My first thought is: ‘After three and a half years of ranting about the whys and wherefores of Brexit, what the hell am I going to rave about now?’ I am sure I will find something… Along with around 230 colleagues from the window and door industry at a bash on the Thursday night of the election we went to bed with the news that exit polls were showing a Conservative majority of 86. A delightful evening with the industry’s most ardent partygoers was set to end very well indeed. Although of course, even in what one would imagine is a staunchly Conservative industry (and especially with Jezza doing his best to alienate even lifelong Labour voters) there were some amongst us that I recognise as having been vociferous in their opposition to leaving the EU. On the long journey back to the leafless, wind and rain-swept lanes of Essex, the grey skies and miserable weather could not dampen my overwhelming feeling of relief and, although I may have been deceiving myself, I felt that throughout the day, from everyone that I met and spoke to. After three and a half years of the worst kind of political procrastination and, frankly, sabotage, the British people

have overwhelmingly spoken again. And whilst I believe that there was a great deal more behind Johnson’s victory than Brexit, nonetheless people had had enough and wanted to get on with their lives. Frankly I despise the politicians that that have dragged our country through this shameful exercise. Everyone has suffered and, whatever the outcome of the negotiations that have still to take place over what will be many months and years, we have a great deal to make up in the trade that has been lost due to the doubts that the politicians have cast over the Brexit process. In fact, recent statistics issued by FENSA, the largest of the UK’s Building Regs compliance schemes, indicate that the market has been at best flat, with a very similar number of completion certificates issued this year to 2018. Under the circumstances that might not look too bad, but every company needs growth even to stand still, as overheads always increase; when businesses suffer then so too do their employees. This is basic common sense. Homeowners have simply not been confident enough to commit their cash, or debt, to fund home improvements when the clowns in Parliament were playing political football with our lives. So where are we now? Contrary to many people’s view I do not believe that there will be a boom in the home improvements market although I would love to be proved wrong. There will be growth in window and door

“Contrary to many people’s view I do not believe that there will be a boom in the home improvements market although I would love to be proved wrong. There will be growth in window and door sales again but once the furore of the election result has died down, other factors will play a part in not just British, but world economics, and these may level the playing fields. “

sales again but once the furore of the election result has died down, other factors will play a part in not just British, but world economics, and these may level the playing fields. We will have enjoyed the lull created by Christmas and the New Year celebrations with a cessation of Brexit hostilities. But following the legal exit from the EU, there will be months of wrangling for deals and political sniping which will blur the lines; And we cannot forget the trade war between the US and China. Having said that the pound will continue to strengthen and there is even a hint that interest rates will be cut by the Bank of England. And house prices will grow at a greater rate again, which in turn should stimulate house building, both of which offer opportunities for us in the window and door industry. But steady as she goes must be preferable to boom, which inevitably is followed by bust. As much as the practical side of life I am looking forward to an end to the intense animosity that has become normal in Brexit Britiain. Whilst I resent the damage done to our businesses and livelihoods by the politicians I also regret the loss of mutual respect that this miserable period in our history will come to represent. Families have been riven apart and, whilst opposing political views are quite normal across any dinner table, it is the spite and the bile with which those views have been advanced and defended that have plumbed new depths, stabbing at the very heart of our famed British civility. Relief was my first emotion and it is now joined with optimism: that business will improve yes, but also that harmony will be returned to our Nation, between friends, colleagues and families. And with that, a return also of basic dignity.

His activities include manufacturing a full range of windows and doors in PVC-U and aluminium, an IGU facility, retailing and commercial contracting.

GQA Qualifications has once again signed up to take part at the FIT Show. Following encouraging levels of visitors to its stand at this year’s event, the fenestration industry’s awarding body is expecting to enjoy even more engagement with the industry at the 2020 show. GQA is the sole provider of CSCS cards for the fenestration and glazing industries, and provides nearly fifty fenestration industry relevant qualifications across the UK, delivered nationwide via a network of seventy specialist training centres. The organisation is also a major promoter of practical training for the industry to underpin the many handson roles that employees undertake. In addition, GQA is actively involved in the Building Our Skills – Making Fenestration a Career of Choice campaign. Commenting on GQA signing up for FIT Show 2020, GQA’s CEO, Mick Clayton said: “We’re huge supporters of the show. We feel that it presents a massive opportunity for us to engage fully with the industry, and to explain how employers can get more involved in our campaign to deliver a bettertrained and better-qualified workforce. This campaign is vital to enable the industry to face the challenges ahead. Come and see us on our stand in May – it will be here before we know it!” Jess Hardisty, PR Manager for the show said: “We’re really pleased that GQA is returning to FIT Show as part of our 2020 lineup. FIT Show is a vital platform for showcasing the various skills and training routes for our industry and we will, once again, have representation from multiple providers at the show. Organisations such as GQA play a pivotal role in helping to train and up skill our existing workforce, as well as attracting new talent to the industry and helping to tackle the growing skills gap.” Further information is available at www.gqaqualifications.com. CWG’S FIVE-YEAR COMMITMENT TO KOMMERLING

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

NEW KENRICK WEBSITE GOES LIVE

Morley Glass & Glazing has recently completed a £500,000 integral blind installation at Belfast City Hospital’s new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit.

From left to right: Ian Smith (KÖMMERLING), Chris Powell (CWG Choices) and Gareth Jones (KÖMMERLING)

The £20m two-storey building now benefits from Morley’s SL20 MB system, which was specifically developed for the project to feature two operating mechanisms – one for the patient to control inside their room, and a key operated override system for nurses to operate externally.

CWG Choices, one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of PVCu windows and doors, has just signed an exclusive five-year deal with profine UK, for the supply of a wide range of KÖMMERLING window and door systems. It’s an agreement that provides profine and their KÖMMERLING brand with an exclusive supply of highly engineered windows and doors to the Aldridge manufacturing facility of CWG. This factory is also set for further expansion thanks to a large investment in the infrastructure and in machine capacity. CWG Choices have been working with KÖMMERLING as their profile partner since July 2004. This agreement further cements the partnership between the two companies for the supply of KÖMMERLING 70 and the PremiLine patio door, as managing director of CWG Choices, Chris Powell explains. He said: ‘We’re delighted to formally announce the extension of our partnership for another five years and we’re actively looking to expand our production of KÖMMERLING with additional investment in manufacturing technology and plant equipment. It’s a special relationship we have with Gareth and the team and we’re all looking forward to reaping the rewards of this partnership further.’ Gareth Jones, managing director of profine UK and the KÖMMERLING brand added: ‘We’ve had a wonderful year with the FIT Show, two industry awards, yet the signing of a five-year partnership with CWG Choices is something quite special. They’ve been the largest KÖMMERLING fabricator in the UK for some years now and with the additional investment they’ve got the opportunity to build on this and we’re delighted to support them further with this partnership.’ For further information on CWG Choices please visit cwgchoices.com. The Excalibur high security door lock and six of Kenrick’s complete window locking systems which feature on the website have been rigorously tested to satisfy both PAS 24 and Secured by Design accreditation. The Centurion four point locking system, Centurion Fast-Fit ‘non crop’ shootbolt, Excalibur multi-point shootbolt, Interceptor high security espagnolette, Easi-Fit multi-point locking system, Nemesis espagnolette window locking system and the Excalibur door lock also carry their own comprehensive product and security guarantees, which can be accessed on the website. Kenrick is a leading supplier of hardware solutions for PVCu, aluminium and timber window and door systems. The company has a proud heritage spanning more than 200 years, having been established by Archibald Kenrick who manufactured buckles and livery fittings. In addition, by using Morley’s Uni-Blind sealed units with warm edge spacer bars, rather than the originally specified units with a ceramic frit to cover the spacer bars, the hospital was able to save thousands of pounds. Ian Short, Morley Glass & Glazing managing director, said: “This project is a great example of some of the added benefits our Uni-Blind sealed units can offer to projects such as this. Once we’d spoken to the architect for the project, he was confident that not only did Uni-Blinds look better than the other systems he’d seen on the market, but this decision would save the hospital around £150 per unit.” The new purpose-built facility sits on a 3-hectare site within the Belfast City Hospital estate and combines mental health inpatient facilities previously spread across three Belfast sites, including 80 acute mental health en-suite bedrooms. The unit consists of five separate interconnecting buildings arranged around a cloistered central courtyard and communal and administration areas. For more information visit www.morleyglass.co.uk.

THERMOSEAL GROUP EXTENDS ITS FLEET OF DELIVERY VEHICLES As part of its commitment to providing an industry-leading service to its customers, Thermoseal Group has upgraded the first of its extensive fleet of vehicles to a 31 ft. truck. This will allow the transport of a greater volume of insulated glass components to accommodate larger orders on extended delivery routes.

of other IG components, our customers expect us to meet their changing requirements. With this in mind, we are continually developing the business to ensure that what we have written on the back of our vans – “When Trust is Vital, you can rely on Thermoseal Group to deliver” – continues resonate as true.

Since embarking on its ambitious Thermobar and Thermoflex warm edge manufacturing project back in 2010, the Group has been continually investing in the infrastructure of the business to meet the increasing volume of sales of its industry-leading energy-efficient products. This truck, as well as the addition of 26 ft. trucks with sleeper cabins, means that the Group can deliver a greater volume of larger orders to customers across the UK and Ireland.

“Extending the size of our trucks is just a small part what we’re doing to ensure that we can meet the increasing demand for our products. Just this year, we have also completed the installation of an order and tracking system

which was the final stage of our 5-year plan to offer a paperless order processing system. This system, coupled with an earlierinstalled bar coding system, means that we can track our products and service from raw material right through the manufacturing process to delivery to the customer, and all by reducing our usage of paper and so minimising our carbon footprint! Then there’s the investment in the Technical Centre, new production equipment, additional buildings, more staff etc. etc. “The sheer volume of changes brought about by continual

investment in Thermoseal Group’s production and infrastructure could keep me talking all day and that’s without our ambitious plans for future growth and development. It’s exciting to be part of the growth of the business! “Of course, we couldn’t do any of this without our customers, so I’d like to thank them for their trust and loyalty in continuing to purchase from us and assure them that we will continue to do everything we can to evolve our products and service to meet the changing requirements of the market as a whole.” Thermoseal Group supplies over 2,500 IG Components and a wide range of IG manufacturing machinery. VEKA RECYCLING SUPPORTS FUTURE

SUSTAINABILITY WITH FACTORY EXPANSION Eco conscious industry leader VEKA Recycling has increased its production space to 20,000 square feet following completion of a project to add a sizeable extension to their existing factory. Signed off in late December, the build contributes to an ongoing investment programme by the company which, to date, totals £6 million. VEKA Recycling moved to Wellingborough, Northamptonshire from Kent at the end of 2018 with ambitions to grow and develop in-house capabilities. Committed to environmental sustainability, the company strives to ‘fight the prejudices against uPVC in the modern home improvement industry’ by recycling used uPVC windows and doors, creating materials that can be extruded into new products without compromising quality or performance.

34

Simon Scholes, Managing Director at VEKA Recycling described the phased approach the company has taken to becoming fit for the future: “Now we have had sufficient time to establish ourselves at the new Wellingborough site, this construction phase is ‘the big push’ to help reach our final phase of investment, due

later this year. The financial decisions we have taken are bold but reflect our ethos and commitment to combatting environmental issues – the more we can work to close the gap on uPVC recycling, the better for everyone across the industry. “With the public increasingly showing grave concern for

the future of our planet, installers and fabricators can with confidence, share the knowledge that used materials are disposed of responsibly, and will give life to new products.” Alongside increasing capacity, VEKA plans to invest more broadly, including purchasing new machinery, and expanding and further upskilling its staff – all as part of an ongoing programme that will span in to 2020. Simon continued: “By the end of 2020, we will have spent a further £4 million on making VEKA Recycling the biggest name in the UK and keeping ‘end of life’ uPVC out of landfill, while offering a cost effective alternative to our customers. We want to be fully prepared for whatever the industry is ready to throw at us.” READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0054

BIRD NEST INSPIRES ENGINEERS TO BUILD NEW BRICKS FROM PLASTIC WASTE A new brick made from domestic plastic waste has been proven to provide 10 times better insulation than traditional bricks made from clay. Dr Karthikeyan Kandan, senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU), has created a novel brick made entirely from upcycled plastic waste. Believed to be the first of its kind, the brick is constructed using 3D printing and lattice architecture technologies, which involves criss-crossing strips of the plastic materials to form a grid or weave. The design is inspired by nature, after Dr Kandan examined the structure of the Baya weaver bird’s nest; renowned for its elaborately woven construction. “The Bayer weaver bird’s nest’s ingenious construction gives it excellent thermal insulation and mechanical properties for inhabitation,” explained Dr Kandan. “Inside there is a central nesting chamber, which makes it the ideal micro-climate for inhabitation. By replicating this structure, we have manufactured a brick that improves energy efficiency of modern buildings and therefore can reduce carbon foot print.” Saad Alqahtani, a first-year PhD student at DMU, carried out controlled experiments on the plastic bricks, under joint supervision from Dr Kandan and Dr Farukh – also a senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the university. To test its thermal insulation characteristics, Saad placed the brick in a hot-box calorimeter – a piece of equipment used to measure the U-value of an object, which can be set up to simulate the regulatory standard for buildings. U-value is a measure of the flow of heat through an insulating or building material: the lower the U-value, the better the insulating ability. The results showed the new design delivered an impressive U-value of 0.25 Watts per Metre Kelvin (W/m²K). This is 10 times more effective than a clay brick, which delivers an average of 2.94 W/m²K. Traditionally, a range of building blocks are required to achieve the regulatory standard U-value, however, the newly designed plastic brick can achieve this on its own.

BUILDING OUR SKILLS PRACTICAL TRAINING ACADEMY OFFICIAL OPENING BY LORD BLUNKETT Friday 29 November 2019 saw the official opening in Sheffield of the new Building Our Skills academy in association with GQA Qualifications. The opening was performed by Lord Blunkett and Glass News Editor, Chris Champion, was there to witness this significant event. This was, indeed, a significant event as this academy is the first of a planned network of facilities designed to offer hands-on practical training in the Fenestration Industry. Training offered at the academy will include surveying, window and door installation, curtain wall and glass technology, in addition to theoretical training courses.

The new academy is supported by a large number of key Fenestration Industry employers. Those who wish to do so can attend a range of courses and master classes at the facility, send their staff to do the same or host their own product training there for their customers. able to make the new academy a reality is absolutely fantastic. I am over the moon that we are going to be able to bring more opportunities than ever to those in the Fenestration Industry who seek career progression. This is the start of a proposed extensive network of facilities around the country that will help to raise standards in the industry, and I for one can’t wait to see it fully utilised”.

Underpinned by GQA, the Building Our Skills campaign is designed to attract new entrants, young people and career changers into the dynamic Fenestration Industry. GQA Qualifications is the industry’s leading awarding body and has been writing industry-relevant qualifications for over twenty-five years. GQA is the only awarding body licensed to offer CSCS cards in the fenestration industry. Building Our Skills was launched to help heighten awareness for the entire Fenestration industry and to help attract young and new people to make it a career of choice. It will promote to its audience the types of careers, training, and qualifications available for new entrants and young people. It also aims to help organisations and employers have a better understanding of how to engage and employ young people, highlight skills and funding to upskill existing staff and give advice and guidance on training and qualifications which could benefit their staff and business. The new Practical Training Academy is just one of the initiatives of BOS and they have been working with the West Yorkshire College Consortium Skills Service to

include Fenestration courses on to their prospectus. Now any company from the Leeds City Region can benefit from up to 40% funding and BOS is also working with other organisations to enhance this offer in other areas across the UK for other regional employers. The BOS Inspiring Talent Academy will be offering an intake of 10 people into the new BOS talent programme from Jan 30th 2020 and there will be a new intake every 6 months. Employers can nominate young talent to the programme and their commitment is to allow the individual time off work to attend. The Building Our Skills Inspiring Talent Academy has been created to help develop talented individuals, professionally and personally, and to inspire them to choose Fenestration as a home for their skills and their career ambitions. It is not onerous on the employer as it will give students seven ‘Inspiration Days’ over 15-month, an industry mentor to help with their on-going development and a rounded view of business and experiences to build foundations for their career. Other initiatives which have been helped by the many industry sponsors who are supporting Building Our Skills, include a social media campaign with unique hash tags that the industry is encouraged to use when discussing skills and training. The whole BOS campaign is important to the future of the industry and any companies wishing to join those already involved should go to the BOS website to see the details of how they can be part of this initiative. GLASSOLUTIONS ABERDEEN NAMED ‘TRADE COUNTER OF THE YEAR’ GLASSOLUTIONS Aberdeen trade counter has been recognised for its fantastic commitment to its customers following a move to a new site, with a win in the ‘Trade Counter of the Year’ category at the G19 awards. Relocated in May 2018 from its previous location, GLASSOLUTIONS Aberdeen’s new 8,000sq ft site on Girdleness Road quickly became a benchmark for all of the company’s other trade counters. GLASSOLUTIONS invested £80,000 in the new branch, including an interactive showroom, online ordering and staff training. At a time when many glass suppliers are downsizing their physical presence in favour of operating solely online, GLASSOLUTIONS chose to recognise that many of its customers valued being able to pop into one of its local branches, access face-to-face technical advice and build a relationship with their local team. This all

adds up to GLASSOLUTIONS Aberdeen delivering an even better service locally. GLASSOLUTIONS distribution director Lisa Dunn said: “Winning this award is a fantastic recognition of everything the Aberdeen branch has achieved since it opened in May 2018. Footfall at the site rose by 100% in the first 15 months of business, which in turn translated into a 30% increase in sales as well as a double digit increase in material margins. We are constantly striving to provide our customers with the best quality products, the highest levels of service, and excellent technical support, and to have that hard work rewarded at the G19 Awards is a wonderful achievement.” GLASSOLUTIONS has previously won G-Awards. In 2017 it took home the Customer Care award, in 2016 it won Commercial Project of the Year, in 2014 it was awarded Environmental Initiative of the Year and it was crowned Glass Company of the Year in 2012. This year’s winners were announced at the prestigious G19 Awards Presentation and Gala Dinner which took place on 29th November at the London Hilton on Park Lane. www.glassolutions.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0061

VEKA UK FLIES THE FLAG FOR LANCASHIRE

IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE

Burnley-based PVCu profile manufacturer VEKA UK demonstrated the company’s pride in its Lancashire roots once again, by marking Lancashire Day and Lancashire Business Day in style.

“We are incredibly proud to support this event, as we are proud to continue championing our region as a Burnley Bondholder and an official Lancashire Ambassador. Lancashire is not only home to the VEKA UK factory, but also to most of our hardworking employees, and we are all striving to see this cracking county get the recognition it deserves.

As an official Patron for Lancashire Business Day 2019, November 27th saw VEKA join other proud regional businesses in celebrating all the heritage, innovation and opportunity that Lancashire is known for. MD Dave Jones says: “The ‘Red Rose’ county is a phenomenal place to live and work, and Lancashire Business Day gave us yet another opportunity to sing its praises.

that we might come together with a single voice and mission to best promote the County.

“Here at VEKA, we raised the Lancashire flag in place of our usual VEKA diamond and we had a company-wide Lancashire-themed ‘bake off ’ with all proceeds going to MIND; our nominated charity for the year. The winning cake was presented as a hot pot – and you can’t get much more Lancastrian than that!

“I joined the audience at Holmes Mill where Lancashire’s county-wide bid for ‘UK City of Culture 2025’ was announced. This is the first bid of its kind; an exciting, more inclusive prospect, highlighting the combination of Lancashire’s rural beauty, coastal communities and glittering cities, rather than having a single urban focus.

“Throughout the day, staff members took part in events and discussions across the county, including the Patron’s ‘Round Table’ at Samlesbury Hall, where our Marketing Director Dawn Stockell represented VEKA UK. The group discussed Lancashire’s many worldclass qualities and its ‘powerhouse’ status, as well as considering ways

“The day culminated in the Lancashire Business Day Event held at one of Burnley’s newest premier venues, the Crow Wood Hotel. The event brought the business community together to hear high profile speakers and take part in in-depth panel discussions focusing on the issues affecting Lancashire businesses.

“Marketing Lancashire put together a video with Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff which stated that Lancashire was the ‘birthplace of the industrial revolution, and we haven’t stopped since’. A sentiment that I think perfectly represents the county, its manufacturing prowess and the business community’s commitment to continuous, unwavering evolution and innovation.” VEKA UK is a major manufacturer and valued employer for the region. The company was named ‘Manufacturing Business of the Year’ at the 2019 Red Rose Business awards and ‘Employer of the Year’ at the same event in 2018. “IT’S BEEN A GREAT YEAR:

AND SO MUCH MORE TO COME!”

The Glass & Glazing Federation’s Commercial Group hosted a Christmas Press event in London where Managing Director, Anda Gregory, provided an overview of the Group’s activities during 2019 and looked forward to the future. Discussing each of the Commercial Group’s brands, which include FENSA, BFRC, Installsure (formerly GGFi), Borough IT and RISA, Anda said that cooperation and unity between the commercial businesses “has been unprecedented….helping us to make more of each company, in terms of promoting each other’s businesses and lending expertise to deliver the best service possible.” Referring to the rebranding of the former GGFi to Installsure, which was carried out, in part, to remove confusion between GGFi customers and GGF membership, Anda reported that 2019 has been a record year for applications to join the specialist insurance and financial services provider, facilitated by better marketing, improved communications within the Group, the digital distribution of documentation and the simple provision of an online application form. Inspections and audit body RISA was the next to receive attention. Anda reported that crucial changes were made to how the team operates with subtle yet highly effective changes such as renaming ‘inspectors’ as ‘assessors’: “This has fundamentally changed how we do things so that the assessors now develop personal relationships with the FENSA Approved Installers in their area,” said Anda, “improving customer service, and delivering a higher number of on-site

assessments with the fitters and a greater level of efficiency with fewer miles covered.” Borough IT continues to offer bespoke IT development services to the glass and glazing industry as well as the wider construction sector, recently working with LABC (Local Authority Building Control) to support government on receiving necessary data from Competent Person Schemes such as FENSA. The main focus of Borough IT, said Anda, has been the provision of delivering on a large number of big IT change projects for the other businesses within the group The British Fenestration Rating Council – BFRC – has also undergone significant change, reported Anda, including a new rebranding and website designed to promote BFRC as the best way for companies to prove the energy efficiency performance of their products. “Our bold new rebrand reinforces the vital role BFRC plays in proving this invisible performance, and includes a new logo, our new ‘proven performance’ slogan, a manifesto which

underpins everything we say and do, as well as new ratings labels for use in the industry,” she advised. BFRC is also expecting UKAS accreditation and she added that “a number of new product developments will be launched next year”. BFRC will also be organising a further Fabricators’ Forum early in 2020, with an emphasis on the anticipated revisions to Approved Document L of the Building regulations, and how it will affect the UK fenestration industry. FENSA continues to be the highest profile brand of the GGF Commercial Group, a position that has been extended during 2019. Crucially, Anda reported that despite the difficult trading conditions, uncertainty and economic worries, FENSA job notifications remain buoyant with around 570,000 installations in 2019, mirroring the number reported for 2018. Anda stated that it had been recognised during a review in 2018 that customer service had to be improved and big improvements have taken place, with the team strengthened with recruitment and training. “Safety glazing failure rates haven’t been showing any signs of improvement, so we’ve had to take a tougher stance on this to start moving the dial,” she added, “so we’ve started a campaign to reduce the incidences of failures due to safety glazing, which is fundamental to keeping homeowners safe in their homes.” “Partnerships with training providers have also been established to offer upskilling for installers across the industry, with more to come in future months. FENSA has also sponsored the Building our Skills initiative to help tackle the skills shortage and FENSA will also be extended into Northern Ireland,” she added. The GGF Commercial Group MD inevitably ended her address with reference to the FENSA TV commercial. Combined with sponsorship, she reported that the

Anda Gregory

advertisements have reached 63% of the adult UK population, with each person seeing the messaging an average of 8.1 times, equating to more than 247million viewings. The TV campaign, together with social media, a new and improved website and increased activity through PR and press advertisements has significantly improved the visibility of FENSA. “FENSA had rested on its laurels for too long,” admitted Anda. “Although brand recognition by homeowners was okay, it wasn’t as high as we needed it to be for the good of our FENSA Approved Installers and there was confusion around what FENSA actually did or meant. This is why we made a hero out of our FENSA certificate, encouraging homeowners to always ask if they’ll get a FENSA certificate when the job’s done when getting quotes from installers. “Our expectations for the campaign had three components. The first was to help our existing FENSA Approved Installers to win more work. The second was to gradually bring more good installers who weren’t with FENSA already into the family. And the final, and most crucial from the point of view of the GGF Group’s mission to raise industry standards, was to help shrink the grey market and make it harder for rogue traders to win work. Given trading standards is underfunded, we needed to find more creative ways to get homeowners to only use legitimate installers through spreading positive messages about our industry.” Anda finished by saying that activity for all divisions will be stepped up during 2020: “Despite the significant achievements of 2019 we have no intention of reducing the intensity of change throughout the GGF Commercial Group, and we will continue with a range of initiatives for each division, all of which will be designed to increase the effectiveness and in turn of course, commercial competitiveness of each brand. Our plans are well advanced to ensure that GGF Commercial Group will enjoy a highly positive and successful 2020.” READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0064

AURORA UPSELLS

WITH APEER AND LUMI Crewe-based Aurora Windows has no problem putting Apeer and Lumi doors next to cheaper alternatives, as co-director Chris Upton explained. “Customers only have to see and feel them and they can tell immediately they are looking at something quite different,” he said, “It’s more than just offering more choice – it’s a real opportunity to upsell because they work and feel so much better.” Aurora first looked at Apeer because it had a 70mm door that other suppliers couldn’t match. But, he added: “Once we had it, we began to see how different it was in they way it handled and we saw the customers were noticing it too. They see the price difference with the cheaper doors but they can also see why they are paying a bit more, and they obviously like that.” The Lumi system is even more of a differentiator for Aurora so it almost goes without saying that Chris is looking very seriously at extending the offer to include Lumi2 as well as Apeer’s new smooth-skin Silka door, as he explained: “Lumi really is unique, something no other company nearby can match and the way people are drawn to it in the showroom makes that very clear, and because showroom visitors are looking for retrofit, the Lumi2 system would fit in very well. “We also have good demand for high-end aluminium doors so Silka would fit in very well there, not only as a lower-priced alternative to ali but also a unique finish in its own right.” He concluded: “It’s very easy for any door retailer to offer the same as everyone else and probably do OK out of it. But we want to be better than that and Apeer, Lumi and Silka are the perfect products for us to do just that.” www.apeer.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0065

There is still considerable demand for conservatories and glazed extension explains Chris Baron from Prefix Systems. He said, ‘in many ways we are going back to our foundations as a business 20 years ago to promote our range of conservatory roofs. No other independent business in the UK has manufactured more roofs than us and we currently enjoy a notable market share, serving the entire UK through four branches.’ The new brochure fits in well with the carefully branded range of marketing materials that’s been developed by Hannah Gilrane, marketing co-ordinator for the business, along with feedback from customers. The contents show the different shapes, along with a number of modern-day enhancements including a cornice, contemporary gutter shroud and insulated pelmet. Colours are also highlighted in the brochure along with the bespoke colour matching service, thanks to the in-house painting facility at Prefix. There are also several before and after projects highlighted and a spread with a number of FAQ’s for the consumer. Chris concluded: ‘While much of the talk in the industry is about solid roofs, there still remains a strong market for conservatories and glazed roofs and for good reason. With the latest generation of roof glass, they make for a more permanent addition to any home, or are indeed perfect for replacement projects. This new brochure best presents our product range, along with a number of enhancements and design features that can be added to any project. It also reflects the way in which we respond to customer demand for new marketing materials, we’re a business that listens.’

The highly evolved system, which was originally launched over 20-years ago and which now has over 3,000 users in the UK, recently underwent a step-change in its offering with the launch of dedicated mobile apps, designed to fully integrate every stage of the sales process, from marketing to after-sales support. Intuitive and easy to use, AdminBase is designed to put an end to often inaccurate and inefficient handwritten processes. By using a mobile device such as a phone or tablet, all the information from point of sale is sent back to a central database, where it can then be accessed and edited in turn by survey, fitting and service teams, again via a dedicated app. The latest update is simple to download and set-up for existing users, and automatically displays the remaining warranty and guarantee periods for each of the individual products installed as part of a contract. The warranty and/or guarantee relating to each of the products used in a particular job, for example the door, hardware and windows, can be individually set when the data is first entered onto the system. For added simplicity, default products will have the warranty and guarantee information already set-up each time they are selected for a new contract. Once activated, the remaining warranty and guarantee information will then be stored in a central database along with all the other details of the related contract, ready to be accessed by a service engineer via a tablet, in the event of any required remedial work. Rhonda Ridge, managing director at Ab Initio, commented: “When I originally created Adminbase, the ability to mobilise the system with on-site functionality simply wasn’t possible, but now, thanks to the high-speed internet connectivity of modern portable devices, it has revolutionised the way installers can operate. This latest update adds even more functionality and gives users a simple and effective way of keeping track of warranties and guarantees, eliminating paperwork and creating a favourable impression with homeowners in the process.” www.abinitiosoftware.co.uk

BRINGING LIGHT TO LIFE

Sunlight is one of the things that humanity can’t live without. Whether you suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder or if you need a bit of sunshine to bring a smile to your face – it’s essential to life. For one family, a poorly little girl was in desperate need of some sunshine, but because of Meningitis she has sensitive skin and is unable to play outside with the rest of the children. Ellie Mae was diagnosed with Meningitis when she was very young and has deteriorated since she contracted the disease. Meningitis has affected her severely and her skin is susceptible to the harshness of direct sunlight – this is where local trade counter and installer Horton Building Plastics and Liniar came together to help make her life a little brighter.

ELLIE MAE’S JOURNEY Ellie May contracted meningococcal septicaemia in 2007, just days before turning 1 year old. Since then, she has undergone an overwhelming 90 surgeries, including one that left her bedridden and resulted in the loss of her legs. At the age of 13, Ellie Mae underwent an operation to allow her to use a wheelchair to get around; and the family’s conservatory became an important part of Ellie Mae’s life. She was able to escape the confines of her bedroom and it offered her the chance to look outside at the garden. However, since it was built in 2011, the conservatory had now begun to leak and was no longer fit for purpose.

“The new roof is a lot quieter even in the pouring rain; it looks great and it’s so nice to have a dry room.” 42

Recently, Ellie Mae’s mum, Kelly Mellor, reached out to the local press in Stoke-onTrent to ask the community to support her in her endeavour to provide Ellie Mae with this much-needed space. Kelly’s mum told the publisher, “It would make a huge difference in Ellie’s life” – and that help has now come right before Christmas.

SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY Helping the community around them is something Liniar stockist Horton Building Plastics of Stoke-on-Trent is known for. When the team heard about Ellie Mae’s situation, they knew they wanted to be a part of bringing some happiness to this little girl’s life.

for a family in need – and Christmas is all about the season of giving.

Phil Turner, Liniar’s Regional Sales Manager, offered to donate a brand-new Liniar lean-to roof which would not only help provide a bright, safe, weatherproof place for Ellie Mae to play, but one that was also energy efficient – ensuring she could use the conservatory all year round.

Kelly Mellor commented, “The new conservatory is fantastic, it makes a huge difference. The new roof is a lot quieter even in the pouring rain; it looks great and it’s so nice to have a dry room.”

JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS

COMING TOGETHER FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Westland Windows, First Choice and Horton’s Building Plastics arrived at Ellie Mae’s house on 5 December to install the roof and it was an overwhelming success. The new conservatory is warmer, airtight and secure, providing Ellie Mae with a safe place to enjoy the peace and beauty of her garden – without the worry of chest infections or getting wet.

The Managing Director of Horton Building Products, Rob Horton, enlisted the help of

ICOTHERM – REASSURINGLY COMPLIANT,

SO LET THEM KNOW ABOUT IT Icotherm has opted to partner with a new building inspector’s firm, announces Anne-Marie Busch, Marketing Manager. This is not a decision that was made lightly she emphasises, but we took it with our customers in mind. We need to work with an organisation that is prepared to go the extra step to ensure our roofs are appropriately checked when installed, and Ball&Berry can provide just that. The aim of certifying a roof system for building control compliancy is a twofold solution: • The systems house wants to ensure their roof is up to the task, whilst providing you, the installer, with a solution that will make your work easier when getting your installation building control approved.

• The other important role of the compliancy certification and having a roof registered is to give the homeowner the reassurance that their roof is a genuine product. Ball & Berry will do this for us; as part of the application process they will check the original Icotherm paperwork and register the roof reference, allowing us to double check it is indeed a roof we have manufactured. This protects our customers against competitors claiming to use a high specification roof like Icotherm’s when in fact they are not. It also protects Icotherm’s product and brand by ensuring only genuine products are sold under our name. G19 REVIEW

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

EPWIN WINDOW SYSTEMS DOES THE DOUBLE

AT THE G19 AWARDS WITH STELLAR

Epwin Window Systems became a double winner at the prestigious G19 Awards which were held on 29 November 2019 at London Hilton Park Lane Hotel. The leading systems house took the crown for the 2019 New Product of the Year and the Promotional Campaign of the Year. The double win was awarded for Stellar, Epwin Window Systems new ground breaking aluminium window and door system. Clare O’Hara, Epwin Window Systems, Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to have won both the New Product of the Year and Promotional Campaign of the Year for Stellar. The system sets a new standard for the aluminium sector and was designed with no compromise and a commitment to nothing

less than excellence. It’s fantastic to see the efforts of the team recognised in these awards.” Stellar aluminium door and window system was launched to widespread acclaim at Fit 2019 and has been capturing headlines ever since. Gerald Allen, Marketing Manager at Epwin Window Systems said: “Stellar is an outstanding system that needed an outstanding campaign to launch it. We were proud of the resulting campaign and we are understandably delighted to have won these two awards.” Stellar was designed from the ground up for the resurgent retail and light commercial sectors. It features a number of industry firsts that means it is faster to fabricate, saves materials, reduces stockholding and is

simpler to install than rival systems. It is also the only aluminium system to have a fully flush casement window, which features flush lines on interior and exterior elevations and delivers a beautifully uncluttered aesthetic.

The 2019 FENSA Installation of the Year has been awarded to The Sash Window Expert Ltd. The winning installation was chosen from over 560,000 jobs, and presented at the G-Awards on 29th November.

As a PVC-U systems house, the marketing team at Epwin Windows Systems faced a challenge: how to attract an entirely new audience without revealing it was an aluminium system being launched.

“This is the third year we’ve run the Installation of the Year award and the standard of the work of all the finalists was incredible,” said Chris Beedel, FENSA’s Director of Membership. “Each year it gets harder and harder to pick a winner, so congratulations to everyone who made the shortlist and particularly to Rupert Hardwick at The Sash Window Expert Ltd for such a brilliant job.”

In response, the team developed a carefully considered, meticulously planned and multi-faceted campaign that was executed flawlessly. Delivered online and offline, the campaign was built on the themes of space and the launch of a new star performer. Stellar was one of the biggest industry launches for years and its intelligent design and superior aesthetics are attracting a great deal of attention. Winning two G19 Awards for Stellar will help to cement its reputation as the aluminium system that has set a new benchmark for the industry. The FENSA Installation of the Year award recognises the value of combining technical expertise with exemplary customer care. This year’s winning installation was for timber sliding sash windows, manufactured to reproduce the house’s original windows by matching those of the nextdoor property, including very detailed arches. The installer recommended new architraves which were machined to match the originals, which had lost definition under years of paint, and the

window fittings were individually coloured to each room. The finished windows were noted for sliding exceptionally well and leaving a noticeable improvement in sound reduction. Demonstrating fantastic customer service, before work commenced The Sash Window Expert Ltd directed the customer to a local job and previous satisfied customers when they requested references. The installer made multiple visits to ensure the windows were correct, and, once work began, the house was covered in plastic sheeting that was removed and cleaned up each day, to leave the house spotless. The installer was also commended for patching rendering, painting the outside to match, taking down the curtains and replacing them, and repairing existing damage along the way.

Dave Mechem, Director of Operations at RISA, the sole provider of inspection services for FENSA, commented: “It always gives me great pleasure visiting the winning installation because the eye for detail and level of attention given to every element of the job is outstanding. The Sash Window Expert Ltd went above and beyond the clients’ high expectations and is a very deserving winner.” “I was utterly shocked but very pleased to be part of the awards,” said winner Rupert, who beat finalists Stephen Bassett Conservatory Windows & Doors and Crescent Windows Ltd to win the award. “It just goes to show that even the smallest of companies do get recognised and can achieve great things.” READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0074

G-AWARDS CELEBRATE ANOTHER LANDMARK YEAR More entries than ever … more guests than ever …the G19 Awards proved to be yet another landmark year in the event’s 16-year history, when the best of the best stepped forward to be applauded at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Friday (Nov 29). There was extra cause to celebrate for Epwin Window Systems, whose new Stellar aluminium system won both the coveted New Product of the Year trophy as well as

Promotional Campaign of the Year, and CMS Window Systems which came away with Sustainability Initiative of the Year and saw its Contracts Manager John Deacon crowned Unsung Hero for 2019. “The number of entries was 80% higher than last year and the attendance at the event was the biggest yet, with well over 600,” said organiser Tony Higgin. “But the real jewel of the event was the standard of entries, which the judges agreed was an ample match for the volume, among not only the winners but all of the finalists as well. They’ve really set a standard for everyone to try to match next year.” Other winners were: • Commercial Project: Pilkington UK for the Slimming World HQ

• Component Supplier: Deceuninck • Customer Care Initiative: Ultraframe • Fabricator:Sternfenster Window Systems • Glass Company: Crystal Units • Installer: Nolan uPVC • Trade Counter: Glassolutions Aberdeen • Training and Development Initiative: Fenestrology The Fensa Installation of the Year, also presented at the event, went to The Sash Window Expert Ltd. Freefoam Building Products have launched a new video to illustrate how PVC roofline products work seamlessly as part of a wider home improvement offering. Working with Nottingham based company N G Roofline Windows & Doors Ltd Freefoam filmed a refurbishment installation to illustrate how roofline products, fascia, soffit and gutter, can be fitted as part of a wider project including replacement windows and doors. Owner Ashley Marvin started his business in 2012, offering fascia, soffit and guttering in and around the Nottinghamshire area. Working to a very high standard, with first class customer reviews, Ashley soon found that promoting and fitting roofline led to customers requesting other long lasting, low maintenance PVC home improvements. The company now fit doors, windows, flat roofs and dry verge with several fitting teams who specialise in different areas of work. Ashley explained “The business has gradually grown over the last seven years. I started off with roofline but wanted to expand what we offered. Doors and windows were a natural progression from fascia and soffit, and work perfectly together for us. Homeowners want long lasting, low maintenance products on their home, and we can offer the full package. It’s meant we can expand our range and gives us more opportunities to develop new business.”

N G Roofline Windows & Doors are a Freefoam Registered Installer. Freefoam know that roofline products are fitted by a range of companies including window and conservatory installers, roofers and general builders. Freefoam are committed to supporting all home improvement businesses so the scheme is open to any company who are fitting roofline on a regular basis. Ashley commented “We’ve always been a Freefoam Registered Installer. We get marketing support from Freefoam, brochures we can leave with customers and information packs to help our sales process. Their support has certainly helped our business grow.” Click here to see the video https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=qIsKuFHw2mU&t=39s To find our more about becoming a Freefoam Registered Installer go to https:// www.myfreefoam.com/installers READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0077

INDUSTRY EXPERIENCES HIGHEST RATE OF CHANGE - IS YOUR DATA UP TO SCRATCH? Dear Editor, It will come as no surprise to those within the industry to hear that we’ve seen a rapid rise in M&A activity in recent years. For some businesses, it has proven to be a fasttrack way to scale up, enter new markets and to secure both customers and supply chains. For those who don’t have the appetite for major growth or investment, or maybe approaching retirement, it’s presented an ideal opportunity to exit. Either way, the increase in activity has helped generate the highest rate of change seen within the industry. By tracking dozens of metrics across our live database, from suppliers and products, to directors and business activities, we can see that the rate of change has increased by more than 30% in the last 12 months. We can only see this figure growing too, with consolidation and closures continuing to dominate the market, and as fabricators and installers continue to adapt their business models and review suppliers. With the industry landscape changing so rapidly, it’s now harder than ever before to communicate with new potential customers. The once trusty marketing spreadsheets and one-off data lists are now destined for the archives because they simply cannot keep up. Businesses that use these outdated methods or do not cleanse their data risk wasting their time contacting individuals who have changed jobs, retired, or even passed away and businesses that have ceased trading. Continued use could also result in potential damage to reputations with high bounce rates leaving businesses looking unprofessional and facing the prospect of being blacklisted by email providers. That’s without

even mentioning the issue of GDPR, with regulators across the UK and Europe demonstrating that businesses of all sizes fall in their crosshairs. Through updating our live prospect database, which provides real-time business information and contact details for over 70,000 potential customers across the industry, our in-house research team conduct over 20,000 calls and interviews every month. This is just one step of our seven stage verification process which generates over 1,200 changes and updates to our data every month. It’s these important changes which will be missed by out-of-date spreadsheets and lists, and goes some way to explaining why users of our Salestracker platform consistently achieve strong results from prospecting and from their email and direct mail campaigns. By appointing Insight Data and adopting Salestracker, our online prospect database, CRM system and email marketing platform, we present a proven platform to continue marketing, even in everchanging conditions. With real-time business info and contact details for businesses in fenestration, along with housebuilders, local builders, main contractors, architects and builders merchants, Salestracker also presents a valuable opportunity to explore new markets and target new customers. Yours sincerely, Jade Greenhow Operations Director, Insight Data

OPEN LETTER: WHAT THE UK WINDOW INDUSTRY WANTS FROM GOVERNMENT Dear Editor, Regardless of any individual political persuasions, the general election has delivered a level of clarity. We know what sort of Government we can and expect and we know that we will leave the EU on the 31st of January with a ‘deal’. It’s why the Pound has rallied against the dollar and the Euro. We have a sense of direction and the uncertainty which has led to a freeze on investment and growth, is perhaps at last behind us. Where we go now is very much down to the new administration. In the hiatus of the general election campaign it made a series of pledges on which it now must deliver. 1. Housing was a key battleground. The Conservative Party – and by default our new Government - has pledged to deliver 300,000 new homes a year and more than one million by its end of term. Given this, and the crisis in supply of affordable homes this is a key priority 2. The Conservative Manifesto makes a commitment to renewal of the Affordable Homes Programme, “in order to support the delivery of hundreds of thousands of affordable homes”. They have reaffirmed their support for Right to Buy. While a commitment to build new affordable homes will be welcome, ‘squaring the circle’ and balancing it with Right to Buy and the sell-off of homes in public ownership will require careful balance. For the window industry specifically, increased home ownership is a positive and may deliver growth in the home improvement sector. 3. The Conservative Party’s commitments on sustainability are less clear. It pledges to “support the creation of new kinds of homes that have low energy bills and which support our environmental targets”. It does, however, include the creation of a £6.3bn fund to deliver energy efficiency upgrades to “disadvantaged homes”. This falls short of a commitment to Zero carbon homes made by Labour but sustainability given wider public sentiment must be key. With a new

generation of energy efficient products launched into the market, we are in a unique position to be part of the solution – critically this must include retro-fit and home improvement. 4. The Conservative Party has also committed to spend an additional £3billion a year on a National Skills Fund. The shape of this is still unclear, but given the challenges of recruitment in our own industry is welcome. This has driven our own programme of investment in automation, reducing our reliance on labour to control overheads and maintain, as far as possible pricepoint to our customers. We are also investing in homegrown talent and our apprenticeships scheme. Clearly, however, there is more to be done to address the skills gap and to ensure that manufacturing and construction are seen as attractive career options. These pledges aside, the Government must now kick start the housing market, which flatlined throughout 2019 because of the political uncertainty that was created by the general election and Brexit. Reducing stamp duty for a period of time could accelerate recovery in housing transactions, something which is clearly critical to the performance of our own sectors. Again, outside the Conservative Manifesto, we would urge the Government to consider a cut on VAT on building products to 5% to trigger growth in the home improvement market. This would clearly deliver a direct benefit to the window and door industry but in driving growth in retro-fit, generate opportunities to improve the energy efficiency of UK homes. This might go some way to filling the gap created with the scrapping of the Green Deal in 2015. Its delivery may have been flawed but the thinking which underpinned it - the positive cycle of home energy improvement and economic opportunity remains sound and an area of opportunity for government. RECYCLING

CHARITY NEWS

RECOVINYL: UK IS TOP CONTRIBUTOR TO PVC RECYCLING SCHEME

TAKING ON THE TOUR DE EUROGLAZE

The UK is second in Europe (behind Germany) in collecting and recycling waste PVC with a total of 137,989 tonnes recycled here in 2018 across all PVC recycling formats.

Optimisation in cutting technology has resulted in fewer and smaller post-industrial off-cuts for recycling, as Richard notes: “Fabricators have become more efficient at cutting profiles and getting more frames out of their bar lengths. As people get better at reusing offcuts or minimising off-cut material, it’s become even more important to capture more post-consumer material for recycling.”

Of this total, PVC window profiles accounted for 73,703 tonnes, according to latest industry figures.

PVC RECYCLING CAN ‘LEAD THE WAY’

The UK’s sizeable effort represents around 19% of the 739,525 tonnes of waste PVC recycled throughout Europe in 2018 – a new record high. Across Europe, window profiles and related building products accounted for 44% of the total PVC recycled. Recovinyl®, the PVC industry’s recycling scheme, was the largest contributor to this total and registered a total of 734,568 tonnes of PVC waste entirely recycled in Europe in 2018 - a 15.6% increase from 2017. In Europe, the demand for recycled rigid PVC is currently very high, indicating the potential for further strengthening collection and recycling schemes.

TWO NEW UK RECOVINYL RECYCLERS Recovinyl has further sharpened its certification and audit schemes to ensure maximum reliability of collected data and of recyclates traceability, both from recyclers and converters. Over the last 12 months, two new recyclers who focus on rigid PVC have joined the UK Recovinyl network – Tecvyn in Hull and Recycling PVC in Manchester, making a total of 24 accredited recyclers across the country. While across Europe, 11 new recyclers have signed up in the first half of 2019. Welcoming the ongoing upwards PVC recycling trend, Richard McKinlay, Head of Consulting at resource recovery specialist Axion, Recovinyl’s Regional Representative for the UK, says: “Recovinyl is a great success story and there’s still a huge demand for recycled PVC. Much of what is being collected is post-consumer material and we’re doing a really good job in the UK, but we’d like to collect and recycle even more to meet the demand. That’s why it’s important to recycle these frames, for all the right reasons.”

Hinting that construction is the next sector after packaging to come under scrutiny in terms of waste, Richard says PVC’s nowestablished recycling infrastructure can ‘lead the way’ in setting an example for the treatment of other waste construction materials. For fabricators and installers, recycling PVC makes ‘economic and environmental sense’ says Richard: “The PVC recyclers will pay for good quality material, so there’s an economic incentive for fitters and with a recycling network across the UK, there’s an outlet; no need to throw it in a skip. Everyone can do their bit to protect the environment and even the smallest installation company should look at how they can recycle and who their nearest recycler is.” Segregating PVC frames and off-cuts is important, adds Richard, as this helps to maintain quality and the market value of the material. Simon Scholes, Managing Director of VEKA Recycling Ltd, one of the first Recovinyl recyclers in the UK, observes that window companies, particularly larger fabricators, are generating less PVC waste. “Less production waste is a positive thing,” he says. “As the industry has become more professional, it is getting better at collecting waste PVC and sending less to landfill. That’s helping to bring sustainability to the industry as a whole.” Simon adds: “The material is out there, and we can help companies of all sizes to recycle their waste PVC frames and off-cuts. People are catching onto recycling and attitudes towards this are improving. We’re going in the right direction!” PVC can be recycled multiple times without any loss of performance and reused in many diverse new and long-life products from construction products such as windows to flooring and electrical components. Cumulatively, almost 5 million tonnes of PVC have been recycled within the Vinyl 2010 and VinylPlus frameworks across Europe since 2000, with around 10 million tonnes of CO2 saved. Forget the Tour de France or even the Tour de Yorkshire, the bike ride making all the headlines last month was the Tour de Euroglaze.

Staff, customers and suppliers at the Barnsley based trade fabricator completed a 1600km virtual bike ride covering the equivalent distance from Lands End to John o’Groats. They even added on an extra 100km when they reached the finish line so that they could head to a virtual pub for a well deserved drink! It was all in aid of Retina UK, which Euroglaze has adopted as its chosen charity in its 40th anniversary year and helped to raise around £1500. The bike was set up in the Euroglaze canteen for the whole of last month, with the staff dividing themselves into evenly matched teams to take part in a series of weekly time, distance and sponsorship challenges to help clock up the miles. The most fiercely fought was the 12km ‘time trial’, with Managing Director Martin Nettleton throwing down the gauntlet with a time of 19.04 only to be beaten by three members of his own team, including the eventual winner Dale Brettoner with a stunning time of 16.10. Martin was impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of everyone who took part: “All the staff were keen to get involved – especially once we added in the element of competition! Visitors were invited to take part too and some days the pedals were spinning the whole time.” Martin Hitchin and Barry Gilligan, the CEO and Sales Director from REHAU, which has been Euroglaze’s systems supplier for 35 years, were amongst the willing volunteers who took to the saddle – each contributing valuable kms towards the eventual total. Martin Nettleton added: “We’ve set ourselves a target of raising £10,000 for

GOING OUT ON A RECORD-BREAKING HIGH TURFED OUT IN THE COLD... AND THOUSANDS RAISED FOR CHARITY - VEKA TEAM SLEEP OUT AT TURF MOOR A cold November night saw Ten VEKA UK employees join the annual Turf Sleepout to raise funds and awareness for three regional charities tackling homelessness. Fundraisers braved the low temperatures on November 15th to sleep pitchside at the Burnley FC Ground for the benefit of Burnley FC in the Community, Emmaus Burnley, and SafeNet Domestic Abuse Service for Jane’s Place Women’s Refuge. The VEKA team were thrilled to beat their fundraising target of £2,500, drumming up an impressive £3,320 (and counting). This is the second consecutive year that VEKA UK Marketing Director Dawn Stockell has taken part, saying: “Last year, around 50 people joined in the first Turf Sleepout which occurred during Storm Callum. This year was slightly drier, but we definitely needed to wrap up in our warmest coats! 65 people spent the night pitchside to raise funds to tackle homelessness, and together we raised over £25,000. “What can I say - it was cold and uncomfortable! But that’s precisely the point, isn’t it? We were sponsored to do this for just one night, and it’s heartbreaking to think that people go through this every day. The homelessness statistics across the UK are extremely alarming, and the North West is no exception. That’s why my colleagues and I were proud to come together and do our part to help three fantastic charities in the valuable work they do to combat this situation. “VEKA also partnered with Burnley FC in the Community last year, supplying the windows needed for the new Burnley Community Kitchen and Foodbank. This is a cause we are proud to continue to support in its efforts to tackle a host of all-too familiar problems such as poverty, hunger and lack of understanding when it comes to diet and nutrition. “As well running the food bank, the 2018/19 season saw Burnley FC in the Community support refugees, veterans, young carers, people living with disabilities, young offenders and children experiencing

tough times with their mental health. They engaged with over 33,000 individuals and invested £3,599,807 into communities over the last year. “VEKA UK is Burnley-based manufacturer that employs more than 380 people, who are all encouraged to get involved in helping the community. The ethos is one of family values and supporting others – both at and outside of work. As well as supporting a yearly chosen charity, each of our Directors also has their own dedicated CSR responsibility. Sales Director Neil Evans has committed the last year to specifically supporting Burnley FC in the Community which has included being involved in the Sleepout last year, as well as running numerous sessions and workshops with various employability groups aimed at helping people get into work. Neil Hart, Chief Executive Officer of Burnley FC in the Community, said: “Funds raised from the Sleepout event will be split equally between each charity, with Burnley FC in the Community using our share to support the most disadvantaged members of the community through our various sport, health, education and inclusion programmes. “Emmaus Burnley supports hundreds who have experienced homelessness, with funds helping individuals to go out on trips, enjoy activities and purchase basic needs including toiletries. “Meanwhile, SafeNet Domestic Abuse Service supports many young people living with the charity in safe refuge. Funds help provide 1:1 therapeutic sessions, small group work, crèches and trips out to help children recover from their experiences of living with domestic abuse. Support for this organisation is vital, as they currently only have enough facilities for around 1 in 9 referrals. “I was delighted with the incredible support we received for this year’s Turf Sleepout. We were joined by a fantastic number of fundraisers on the evening, even more than last year, and there was a real community spirit and camaraderie on the evening.”

GM Fundraising is renowned for their long-distance cycle rides but ‘From Russia With Hope’, which took place in June this year, was announced as the last of its kind. All funds have been collected and the group announces they are going out on a record-breaking high with the total of £208,891.72, all of which raised for Hope House Children’s Hospices.

“When we announced that this was going to be our final cycling challenge, we were determined to go out on a high,” says Gary Morton, ‘From Russia With Hope’ rider and founder of GM Fundraising. “But, raising over £200,000 is simply astounding. What a way to end what has been a phenomenal journey of cycling challenges over these past 14 years. “As the last challenge of its kind, we also knew it had to be the toughest. And ‘From Russia With Hope’ certainly exceeded those expectations too. With many trials and tribulations along the way, such as road closures, breakdowns, punctures, torrential rain and soaring temperatures, and much more climbing than anticipated, the team of 24, including 18 cyclists, certainly rose to the challenge - nothing was going to stop us! And our fantastic support team endeavored to keep us all going. “None of this would have been possible without our headline sponsor Brisant Secure, who not only covered the overheads of the ride, but were also with us every step of the way supporting in any way they could. I’d like to thank every person involved - those who took part, supported and helped in any way, to make this a record-breaking event in terms of challenge, monies raised and fun. I’d also like to extend additional regard to those who have been there for GM Fundraising for all, or most, of the rides. We have all gained life-long memories and friendships and that makes it all worthwhile

A RE-CAP On Saturday 22nd June, the GM Fundraising cycling team arrived at Hope House in Oswestry marking the end of

‘From Russia With Hope’: 10 countries in 12 days, from the Russian border through Finland, into the Arctic Circle, on through Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, England, Wales, and back into England again, cycling over 2,700 miles, 60,000ft of climbing and upwards of 9,000,000 pedal turns.

Gary concludes: “Through our cyclingchallenges we have raised nearly £756,000 for the children and families at Hope House. “Here’s a summary: 2005: Top2Bottom - John O’Groats to Land’s End – 974 miles - £51,000 2006: Tower2Tower - Eifel Tower to Blackpool Tower – 473 miles - £34,000 2008: Ride4Hope – San Diego to Atlantic City – 3,182 miles - £91,000 2010: Rome2Home – Rome to Hope House – 1,590 miles – £51,000 2013: Hope66 – Chicago to Santa Monica – 2,660 miles - £134,000 2016: Border2Border – Vancouver to Mexican Border – 2,172 miles - £186,000 2019: From Russia With Hope – Russia to Oswestry – 2,700 miles - £208,891.72. “While we might have hung up our cycling clips, the challenge is not over. 2020 is going to be huge year for GM Fundraising with a variety of events taking place including the Gala Dinner, Golf Gay, GMF Cup and the second all-female challenge. Watch this space as we charge on to our target of £2m by 2020. “Thank you for your continued support. We’re honored to be known as the industry’s charity and humbled by your ongoing generosity.” For more information, or to get involved with any of the GM Fundraising events taking place next year, visit: www.gmfundraising.co.uk.

THE FLINTSTONES HAVE ‘A YABBA DABBA DO-TIME’ IN NANTWICH

CARL F GROUPCO’S IT MANAGER RUNS FOR ROSIE Steve Lamb, IT Manager for Carl F Groupco, has completed his first competitive half marathon, raising funds for the Kettering Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) who cared for his daughter Rosie.

On Saturday 19th October, ‘The Flintstones’ rolled into Nantwich town centre, Cheshire, with their classic Citroën 2CV in tow, to launch a very special charity challenge. Proving they’re men of their word, Alutech Systems’ MD, Steve Hudson, and teammate, Rich Hall, completed their first ‘dare’ of ‘The 2CV Challenge’, to dress up as Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble and pull their classic Citroën 2CV around Steve’s hometown of Nantwich, to launch the official website www.the2cvchallenge. com. “The people of Nantwich were very welcoming and enthusiastic,” said Steve. “We were overwhelmed by their encouragement and support.” The 2CV Challenge will take place in April 2020 in aid of Dementia UK, when Steve and Rich will travel back from the French Alps in a classic Citroën 2CV called ‘Flo’, while completing a series of bets, dares and challenges, with the aim of raising £100,000 for charity. Team 2CV has already raised over 5% of their target, with donations on their JustGiving page of almost £6,000! Steve explains, “Every summer when I was growing up, my dad used to drive us down to France in an old Citroen. He absolutely loved that car, and as much as my siblings and I would fight like hell in the back all the way, they were some of the happiest times of my childhood. “When dad’s dementia began, there were many challenging moments, but one of the most painful was when he finally had to give up driving. Not only had it always been something he’d loved doing, but it felt like

that moment also represented his loss of independence. “We came up with the idea of ‘The 2CV Challenge’ earlier this year, when an old Citroen 2CV car overtook the coach Rich and myself were on and we said how much fun it would be to drive one again. It went from that, to driving it back from the Alps next year. Along the way we’ll be completing a tonne of challenges in order to raise as much money for Dementia UK as we can.” With a target of £100,000, some of the challenges that have already been set are: • Run Rabbit Run - Rich and Steve will play rock paper scissors, and the winner will drive ahead for 10 minutes, while the loser has to jog to catch up while wearing an Easter bunny outfit • Strong Man - Rich and Steve will have a competition to see who can pull the 2CV the furthest in 30 seconds. • The Winner Takes It All - Rich and Steve will take it in turn to sing EVERY Abba song (approximately 3 hours of torture). We will share clips on social media and you can decide the winner, who will then enjoy a well-earned nap in the back while the loser continues the drive!Steve concludes, “There are a number of ways to help ‘Flo’ and Team 2CV to reach our financial goal of £100k for dementia. Simply pledge some money on the dedicated JustGiving page because you believe in the cause, or challenge the team to do something fun or crazy to make the drive more fun! If you’re an individual you can set us a challenge for £50, as long as it’s not against EU law! If you’re a company, then we’ll complete any challenge for £200, and we’ll share the evidence with you on video via social media, whilst giving your company a big shout out! Pledges of any value are most welcome and all the money will go directly to the charity.” When donating through JustGiving please remember to suggest your challenge or bet when asked to leave a message at https:// www.justgiving.com/fundraising/stevehudson6 Email steve@the2cvchallenge, visit www. the2cvchallenge.com, tag #the2CVchallenge READER ENQUIRY NO: 1120/0085

Just eighteen months after taking up running as a hobby, he has succeeded in finishing the ‘Run Silverstone’ half marathon, which he completed in a personal best time of just under two hours. To make his efforts even more rewarding, he has raised over £400 to date for his local SCBU through a Just Giving page and cash donations. Explaining his desire to help the unit, Steve said:“I experienced first-hand the amazing work that the Special Care Baby Unit does as they cared for my daughter Rosie when she was born nine weeks prematurely weighing just 3.9lbs. Rosie spent over four weeks in the unit and, without the skilful and meticulous attention of the nurses and doctors, it is unlikely that she would have survived. Rosie is now a very healthy, happy and active 10 year old girl but I will never forget how kind, helpful and caring the staff were.”

GM FUNDRAISING APPOINTS TEAM 4 MARKETING AS ITS PR PARTNER GM Fundraising, which raises money for Hope House Children’s Hospices has just announced the appointment of Team 4 Marketing as its new PR partner. Jane Ward, Director of Team 4 Marketing, said: “We are delighted to be supporting GM Fundraising because Hope House is such an incredibly worthwhile cause. We’re looking forward to supporting the team in its mission to raise as much money for the charity as possible.” Gary Morton, founder of GM Fundraising, said: “It’s great news that Jane and the Team 4 team are partnering with us and I’m looking forward to working with them. A huge thanks should also go to Susie Sinden and the team at Brouha Marketing for their excellent PR support

in recent years. Susie, in particular, has gone above and beyond as a team member and she will be sorely missed.” Team 4 Marketing has joined GM Fundraising at an exciting time because 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the organisation. All the events throughout the year will have a silver jubilee theme. GM Fundraising is best known for putting the ‘fun’ into fundraising, with its spectacular gala dinners, annual golf days, GMF Cup, Ryder Cup style golf event, long-distance cycle rides and footy fives competition. stretch of the River Severn and cycle 150 miles back to Hope House in Oswestry all in eight days. Over 95% of Hope House’s £5 million annual operating costs are met through charitable donations and GM Fundraising is its largest single donor. Team 4 Marketing was founded in 2004 and offers PR and marketing services across the fenestration, construction and manufacturing sectors. The SupaLite Charity Shield will be up for grabs on Saturday March 28th 2020, with entries now open for new teams. The 2019 tournament took place back in March and saw teams from across the local area and the glazing industry take part. After a very competitive but entertaining day, the Glass Times team lifted the coveted trophy. The tournament was in aid of the charity Cash For Kids and saw vital funds raised through entry fees and an all-star raffle. With prizes including a signed Harry Kane England shirt, event wristbands and a training session with boxing gold medallist Scott Fitzgerald, the raffle alone helped to raise an incredible £771. With the return of the tournament, Nina Colquhoun, Finance

Director at SupaLite is hoping to encourage even more teams to enter and raise more money for their new chosen charity Mind. Nina comments: “After the huge success of the 2019 tournament, we are delighted to be bringing back the SupaLite Charity Shield in 2020. With a few months to go, we’re calling on local businesses along with our suppliers, customers and industry friends to register a team in this brilliant event. “This time around, we’re hoping to make the tournament even bigger and better to raise as much money as we can for a really worthy cause. We have a big target to overcome after a successful 2019, but I’m sure with businesses ‘up for the cup’, we can surpass it in 2020.” The 2019 tournament was designed to help Nina meet the necessary fundraising goals to secure a place in the London Marathon. With her spot secured, Nina

successfully completed the marathon and smashed her fundraising goal of £2,500. With the help of friends and family, colleagues, suppliers and industry supporters, Nina went on to raise a fantastic £4,000 for the charity. Along with the 2020 football tournament, Nina will be taking on the London Marathon again, having secured a ballot place for the 26.2 mile marathon. If that wasn’t enough, Nina will also be taking on a second marathon in 2020, along with a gruelling 50 mile ultramarathon in the Lake District.

SENIOR’S ALUMINIUM DAY WINS GOLD!

Senior Architectural Systems is celebrating after winning one of the top prizes at the Construction Marketing Awards for the successful launch of the company’s first ever Aluminium Day.

The leading fenestration systems manufacturer was presented with the ‘Best Social Media Campaign’ award in recognition of the online event that was hosted by Senior back in March 2019. Aluminium Day was launched in order to raise awareness of the versatility of the metal, from its popularity as a building material and use within the food manufacturing industry to its role in transport and aerospace design, as well as celebrating the success and skills of those who work with the material. Attracting contributions from across the fenestration and construction industry, the campaign reached a wide and varied audience – with the #AluminiumDay hashtag being used in four different countries and seen by nearly 200,000 people. Plans are now underway for the next event which will held on Friday 13th March 2020. The date itself, the 13th day of the

third month, gives a nod to the fact that aluminium is the third most abundant metal in the world and its atomic number is 13. As well as making a note of the date, Senior is keen to encourage as many people and companies as possible to get involved and get tweeting. Commenting, Senior’s marketing manager Jonny Greenstreet said: “The first ever Aluminium Day was a huge success and helped to generate some great conversations across a variety of social media platforms. It was great to see so many of our customers and supply chain partners joining in and using the hashtag to get their own messages out to a much wider audience. We will of course be posting our own content but it’s really just a day to celebrate aluminium and those who work with it, and that’s a sentiment that everyone can get behind!” As well winning the top award at the Construction Marketing Awards, Senior’s Aluminium Day campaign was also highly commended at the recent Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) PRide Awards. Further updates about Aluminium Day 2020 and how to get involved will be available soon via Senior’s social media channels. For more information about Senior, visit www.seniorarchitectural.co.uk/askforali or search for Senior Architectural Systems onTwitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.

TECHNAL’S SYSTEMS SELECTED FOR HEADLAND HOME IN JERSEY The project team responsible for a striking residential property in the Channel Islands have used Technal’s Dualframe 75 windows and the Elegance 52 curtain wall system, supplied by Pallot Glass & Windows, to match the property’s modernist styling, as well as to provide outstanding weather performance in a very exposed situation. Island based Pallot Glass & Windows, a long-time user of the systems, was awarded the contract by main contractor, Hacquoil & Cook Ltd, to supply and fit all of the glazing for the two-storey, five-bedroom Jersey home which has earned wide acclaim and been short-listed for several awards. The package included an entrance screen which combined the Elegance 52 elements with a large bespoke timber door, and a fully glazed rear elevation with balconies overlooking the gardens. A Director of Pallot Glass & Windows, Paul Bourke, commented: “Our firm has been supplying aluminium systems since the seventies and have always enjoyed good support from Technal, while the technical rep for Jersey is very successful at getting the systems on specifications with architects and developers here.

“As a result, we have used the Dualframe 75 windows and Elegance 52 systems on a wide variety of projects, including housing for the States of Jersey. The headland house was particularly striking due to its use of Elegance 52 curtain wall for the main entrance screen, rising a storey and a half, featuring a glass-to-glass joint at the corner. It is a project we are very proud of.”

The Dualframe 75 Si suite of profiles represents a new generation in window and façade products, utilising advanced polyamide thermal break technology within the frame. Dualframe 75 Si provides high thermal performance without the need to resort to complex and costly sealed unit specifications. It is an ideal solution for high-rise or commercial applications, combining ventilation with easy cleaning facilities and large span openings – allowing for safe and easy operation; using a handle that is lockable by key. A spokesperson for the project team commented: “We have utilised Dualframe windows for a variety of project types on the island. They offer good thermal performance and outstanding durability: essential in the very severe climate. In the case of this large private house which stands on a very exposed headland, the Dualframe windows and Elegance 52 curtain wall also suited the style of the property.” Technal is part of the Hydro Group, a world leader in aluminium solutions. Through its globally renowned Hydro Technology Hubs, the group is shaping a sustainable future, with innovative products that satisfy and surpass customer expectations, in line with demands of CSR and increasing environmental regulations. INNOVATION FROM ALUPROF Innovation comes from the ability to continually review products and services whilst possessing the agility to quickly introduce new systems into the market. Crucial for all companies who wish to be successful, Aluprof now takes this to the next level by continually pushing the boundary of what is currently being achieved in the fenestration market and raising the bar through innovative design. By way of example, Aluprof was the first company to introduce the insulator ‘Aerogel’ into their aluminium profiles to increase thermal efficiency with very little weight gain. Aerogel is a synthetic, porous and ultralight material which is derived from a gel, where the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas. The resultant material is still a solid, but with an extremely low density and low thermal conductivity. The ‘MB-86 AERO’ system by Aluprof was the world’s first aluminium window and door system to use aerogel offering a Uf value from 0.57 W/(m2K) and UW up to 0.8 W/(m2K). At just 86 mm wide the system is capable of carrying quadruple glazing to easily achieve passivhaus standards. Pioneering fire rated aluminium systems for both internal and external use, Aluprof have for some time incorporated both ceramic and gypsum cores within their profiles with various mechanical fixtures to offer screens which give EI120 fire protection for the most robust installations imaginable. System design focusses on narrow sightlines and where required can always be matched in sightline with standard systems for non-

protected areas of the building giving specifiers free reign on design. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible, Aluprof have recently worked with high specification glass processors of fire rated glasses to test and achieve glass-to-glass joints within fire screens. This Aluprof innovation allows specifiers to achieve longer runs of glazing which are not interrupted by mullions. Staying with innovation in fire rated system, but this time in external curtain wall systems, Aluprof are the first company to design and test a ‘cap-less’ stick curtain wall system which achieves a fire rating of EI60. The ‘MB-SR50N EI efekt’ system has been used on various schemes across the UK where fire needs to be contained with the added benefit that the system can be seamlessly linked in with non-fire rated areas of curtain wall, again giving specifiers the freedom of design whilst meeting strict safety issues. One of the most recent innovations is the development of new transom to mullion fixing arrangements on the company’s popular ‘MB-SR50N’ curtain

www.glassnews.co.uk | January 2020

wall system. Aluminium joints between mullions and transoms are often the limiting factor when using large glazed units in curtain wall. With the dead load being transferred from the transom to the mullion there is also a large turning moment as the glazed units sit to the front of the structural transom. The new development from Aluprof caters for a safe transom to mullion carrying capacity of 550 Kg at each of the transom, potentially allowing for a glazed unit of over 1 tonne in weight being accommodated into the MB-SR50N curtain wall system. This carrying capacity far exceeds many of the curtain wall systems currently available on the market. The key to Aluprof ’s innovation is the adoption of a group-wide iterative process that requires feedback on real project designs, requirements and installations, which is then brought back into the design department. Over time, product is enhanced and improved, and, along the way, every so often an innovation or step change will naturally follow. It will be interesting to see what the new decade brings for Aluprof ’s systems.

Since setting up the Aluprof Project Office at the Business Design Centre in London the systems company has rapidly grown their specification influence in the UK with their high performance and innovative architectural aluminium systems. With overseas growth across Europe spreading into the Middle

East and firm roots already in the East of the USA, the company is becoming a global player in facade supply. Further information is available on the companies website at aluprof.co.uk or direct from their UK office in Altrincham on 0161 941 4005. READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0094

ALUK ANNOUNCES

ACADEMY PLANS FOR 2020 AluK has just released its 2020 Academy training schedule, with more than 20 different GQA accredited AluK courses and workshops available to book now via the website at www.alukacademy.co.uk.

EMMEGI OFFERS NEW VERSION OF SATELLITE XT Emmegi (UK) is launching an updated version of its Satellite XT 5-axis machining centre – branded the Satellite XTE. A product of Emmegi’s ongoing innovation and development programme in Italy, the new XTE version features a new ergonomically designed cabinet which provides improved safety, better soundproofing and easier visibility for the operator. The Satellite XT is already a popular model in the Emmegi range with a mobile gantry for milling, drilling, tapping and processing five workable sides on large sections of aluminium and steel. The new model features the same 15kW electrospindle and 500mm blade tool and the same gantry set up, but is equipped with a larger 24-position tool magazine

and exchanger arm system for faster tool changeover. It is the new cabinet which really sets the XTE version of the machine apart though. With wide glazed sections, it gives the operator a better view of machining taking place and opens up in two sections to provide easier access for cleaning and maintenance. It also reduces noise volumes and effectively segregates the work area from the rest of the tool magazine to better contain the swarf, with the option of dedicated machine fume extraction if required. Both the Satellite XT and Satellite XTE allow fabricators to machine one profile section, cut it into sections and then machine the ends of these sections without interrupting the workflow. The sawblade can produce compound cuts, straight cuts, splicing and trimming, making these machines a good choice for companies notching curtain walling sections in particular.

The options include product awareness courses and LogiKal workshops on AluK’s complete range of aluminium window, door and curtain walling products, theory and fabrication workshops, hands on installation training, and introduction to Building Regs sessions. All of the courses are free and take place at AluK’s impressive training Academy at its Chepstow HQ. They all combine a mix of theory and practical experience and the feedback from participants is always very positive. Riverside Bi-Folds, for example, gave a ringing endorsement of their Academy experience in 2019. The company sent its factory teams on a two day theory and fabrication course and its office staff on a product awareness and LogiKal processing workshop. Company Director Aaron Moroney said it was definitely time well spent: “The courses gave our staff a more in-depth understanding of both processing and fabrication, which we know will really benefit our trade customers. They were very professionally run with just the right balance of classroom theory and hands on practicals and, as always at AluK, we were made to feel very welcome.

“Our fabrication teams definitely gained from seeing the AluK team demonstrate the perfect way to fabricate our products and, for those in the office, the skills they learnt in processing have prompted us to add more AluK products to our range.” A brand new training initiative is also being planned for 2020, as the AluK Academy is joining forces with the CAB and the GQA to provide a simple new route for installers to achieve their Curtain Walling Installer CSCS card. Curtain wall installers who attend a one day CAB approved curtain walling course at the AluK Academy alongside AluK’s system specific AAA16 SL50 curtain wall theory and installation workshop will now be able to apply for their own CSCS card - as long as they follow up with an appropriate health and safety course and NVQ qualification. This will enable them to comply with the new CSCS rules which will come into force on 1 March, when Site Visitor cards will no longer be issued and anyone working on site will have to move across to the appropriate skilled card. Darren Burford who is the Training Services Support Manager at AluK, said: “We’re one of only a handful of training providers authorised to deliver the course and will be working closely with the CAB to maximise awareness of the new CSCS requirements and the solution we are offering before the 1 March date.” More details are at: www.alukacademy.co.uk. READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0096

The Satellite XT already allows users to work in dynamic double mode so that while sections are being machined on one side of the machine, the next sections can be positioned via workpiece clamps on the opposite side. On the XTE version, this feature is enhanced thanks to new compact and sturdy independent servo-controlled clamps which are easy to configure. In line with all of the new machines in Emmegi’s range, the Satellite XTE features an adjustable 24in touchscreen monitor with user friendly interface. More details on both versions of the Satellite are at: www.emmegi.com. READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0095

SENIOR DELIVERS PURE® LUXURY AT GRANTLEY HALL High-performance aluminium fenestration solutions from Senior Architectural Systems have helped breathe new life into the recently refurbished Grantley Hall in North Yorkshire.

A key challenge of the project was to minimise the impact of the new extension on the existing listed building which dates back to the 17th century. With all the original windows in the hall restored to their former glory, it was vital that the fenestration package in the new spa building was appropriate in terms of both aesthetics and performance. The slim sightlines offered by Senior’s SF52 aluminium curtain wall provided the ideal solution and were perfectly complemented by Senior’s high-performance SPW501 commercial doors and patented low U-value PURe® aluminium windows.

The stunning Grade II listed building has been sympathetically repaired, renovated and extended to provide luxury hotel accommodation and a new build spa and wellness retreat. The prestigious contract, which is one of the largest engineering projects to be completed in the North of England, saw Senior’s aluminium curtain walling, windows and

doors fabricated and installed by supply chain partner Aire Valley Architectural

Aluminium Ltd for main contractor R N Wooler and Bowman Riley architects.

Following the ambitious construction programme, both Grantley Hall and the new spa building have achieved carbon neutral status. Key to this was the installation of a ground source heat recovery system, with the exceptional thermal performance of Senior’s aluminium fenestration products also helping to contribute to the overall energy-efficiency of the scheme. Senior has invested heavily in his product range to offer specifiers a range of solutions that not only meet current building regulations and energy-efficiency targets but can exceed them. In addition to the slim profile SF52 aluminium curtain wall system which offers high thermal performance, Senior is also the only UKbased manufacturer to have harnessed the potential of expanded polyurethane (PUR) as a thermal barrier in aluminium doors and windows. Through the creation of the PURe® system, which Senior holds a UK patent for, some of the lowest possible U-values can be achieved and carbon calculations significantly reduced. Products within the PURe® range include a variety of different window types, from traditional casement and tilt and turn to reversible overswing and parallel push styles, and a choice of door options including the bifolding PURe® FOLD, the patio style PURe® SLIDE and the new PURe® Commercial door. NEW APPOINTMENTS

FOND FAREWELL TO DOROTHY Barnsley based Rehau trade fabricator Euroglaze is losing one of its most familiar faces – and voices - this month when Dorothy Pettit, the company’s credit controller, retires after 30 years with the business. Defying the ageing process and now approaching her mid 70s, Dorothy has enjoyed her time with the company so much that she has been reluctant to hang up her phone and put away her spreadsheets until now. She joined Euroglaze at its original home in Dewsbury in 1989 but moved with the company to Barnsley in the early 1990s, initially as an accounts clerk and then later as Finance and Admin Manager. After a spell as PA to Martin Nettleton, Euroglaze’s Managing Director, Dorothy switched to credit control duties many years ago and has kept in touch with dozens of customers over the decades. Speaking before her retirement, Dorothy explained what she had enjoyed so much about her job: “Euroglaze has always been a family business and, like everyone who works here, I have always felt part of that family. Over my time here, lots of other

CAREERS & QUALIFICATIONS IN FENESTRATION

window companies have come and gone, but the quality and values which make Euroglaze special have remained, even as we have developed and expanded. “From the days when the accounts were written out in a diary and we had just a few fabricators on the factory floor to where we are now as a multi-million pound business, I’m proud of what we have achieved together over so many years. I’ll be keeping in touch to see how things are going and looking back fondly over what has been a wonderful final chapter in my career.” Dorothy will be leaving Euroglaze with a rather unusual legacy – a plant, nicknamed ‘the money plant’ which she brought with her from the Dewsbury factory to Barnsley and placed in the company’s reception. Nurtured by Dorothy, it has become almost a symbol of the company’s strength and durability and, like Euroglaze, it has grown considerably over the years. It produced its own healthy offshoot five years ago coinciding with the launch of Euroglaze’s own subsidiary business Ecotec Windows, and the superstitious amongst the team have already spotted new shoots ahead of Euroglaze’s latest new ventures. Martin Nettleton had plenty of warm words for Dorothy, saying: “She has been a mainstay of Euroglaze through plenty of highs and a few lows as well. I know customers as well as staff and me personally will miss her tremendously but, after 30 years, she has definitely earned a long and relaxing retirement.”

FURTHER SENIOR APPOINTMENTS TO THE SHEERLINE® TEAM Garnalex, the company that aims to disrupt the aluminium window and door market with its innovative Sheerline® system, has made three more key appointments. Dave Watts joins as Technical Product Director, Dave Wigley as Head of Marketing and Eilidh Hudson as Sales and Marketing Manager, with a combined industry experience of over 70 years between them. Dave Watts began at LB Plastics in technical support in 1982, after an apprenticeship at British Rail in Derby. In 1994, he joined HL Plastics as Technical Manager for Eurocell, helping grow and develop the company alongside Roger Hartshorn. Dave then set up Vintage Windows, becoming the first fabricator to use the Liniar system in 2007. “I then joined Roger again when he purchased Wegoma, which I ran. Eighteen months later we rebranded this to Avantek”, says Dave. In 2015, Avantek and Vintage were purchased by Quanex as part of the HL Plastics deal, and I returned to HL for a further three years as part of that deal.” The ‘next big thing’ in aluminium window and door systems has convinced Dave to join Roger once again as Technical Product Director, “to help the Garnalex technical team develop fabrication-friendly solutions and introduce innovative ideas based on feedback from my network of fabricators,” Dave adds.

READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0100

Dave adds: “My creative background in design and branding is now focused on the Sheerline brand, making sure that everything we produce adds value and helps our customers fabricate and sell the Sheerline® system.” Eilidh Hudson’s previous experience has been gained across sales, business development and marketing. This included roles at Spectus Window Systems, the Epwin Group and most recently as Technical Sales Manager for Senior Architectural Systems. Her new role, driving sales at Garnalex will see her maximise her talents in new product launches and harness her knowledge of the aluminium market. Eilidh will also lead the Garnalex Ambassador Workshops. “Why workshops?” says Eilidh, “because the Sheerline window system is not like any other aluminium system; it’s a generation ahead in how it goes together and is installed. Fabricators and installers will be able to learn more about the new systems launching in the coming months, and can email me at Eilidh.Hudson@garnalex.com to find out more!” Roger Hartshorn, Garnalex CEO says: “We are building a steadily-growing team of proven industry experts at Garnalex House and at the state-of-the-art Nether Heage £9-million factory. I look forward to working with all the team on #AluminiumButNotAsYouKnowIt!”

Away from Euroglaze, Dorothy is looking forward to spending more time with her husband Mick and indulging her passion for horses, especially her own beloved horse Magic. In 2019, Euroglaze is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a fundraising campaign aiming to raise money for Retina UK. More information is here: https://www.justgiving. com/fundraising/euroglaze-ltd1

Dave Wigley has joined as Head of Marketing after 22 years’ experience at Eurocell and Synseal. Dave was responsible for creating a consistent identity across the rebranded depot network which grew from 6 to 120+ branches during his time at Eurocell, as well as bringing Synseal’s WarmCore and Stratus lantern brands to market. Dave will oversee website design, product branding and the overall Garnalex marketing strategy.

HELP BUILDERS TRAIN TO REGAIN CONSTRUCTION CONFIDENCE SAYS FMB

The largest fall in monthly construction growth for almost two years demonstrates the urgent need for the next government to invest in construction skills to support UK builders, says Federation of Master Builders in response to the ONS construction output statistics published today.

www.glassnews.co.uk | January 2020

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders, said: “The new government must hit the ground running and invest to upskill builders if we’re to meet the construction needs of the next decade, including responding to the climate emergency.

“Today’s 2.3% fall in construction growth shows the ongoing damaging chilling effect of political and economic uncertainty on builders’ workload.” READER ENQUIRY NO: 0120/0102
