The trade confirms the signs of economic recovery A tentative retail recovery is underway in the UK after the Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirmed UK sales growth. The figures were first seen in the British Retail Consortium-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor earlier this month. The total value of sales growth reported by the ONS, which is not seasonally adjusted, was 4 per cent in June compared with 3.7 per cent a year ago. The figures outstripped the BRC’s own figures, released on 9 July, which showed total growth of 2.9 per cent. In May the growth rate was 3.9 per cent. So FENSA’s report that installations have bounced back in the 2nd quarter confirm a general improvement and British Retail Consortium Director General, Helen Dickinson’s opinion that this offers further

evidence that tentative signs of a consumerled recovery are beginning to take hold. Meanwhile FENSA say that the quarter to June 30th 2013 has been the best April, May and June for installation of replacement windows and doors in domestic properties since 2010. There were three successive months of growth, compared with the same period in the previous year, for the first time since the recession hit in 2007. April was up 11.3% on 2012, May up 2.9% and June up 12%. In total the quarter was up 8.53% on last year - though the figures are down 27% on the same period in 2007. “A disappointing first quarter which has been superseded by an encouraging second quarter,” comments FENSA Operations Director Chris Mayne. “These figures support positive comments and statistics announced by other glazing sector businesses in recent weeks and months.” 89% of all window installations are covered by FENSA according to DCLG.* And apart from trade bodies and national statistical offices, is there a feeling within the trade that things are on the up? Glass News asked around the trade.

Ryan Johnson, Emplas’ Joint Managing Director, commented: “Emplas trade sales have increased by than more than 20% in the second quarter compared to last year, and more in turnover terms as the switch to glazed frames has been gathering pace all
