The first wholly good news forecast for the UK window and industry for five years
While there are ‘hot spots’ such as composite doors, some other products may fare less well, especially big ticket items such as conservatories due to banks being risk averse and commercial sectors taking time to recover. To explain that, David Amos comments: “We see these products growing - but less fast than many other products simply because they are big ticket items and many may require bank loans. Also growth in the commercial sectors will follow on from domestic housing spend. The commercial sector went into recession a bit later than both the home improvement and new build sectors due, in part, by the money spent on the Olympics and the supporting infrastucture of hotels, restaurants and so on. It should be remembered that it takes time to wind a big commercial project down. Therefore, the commercial sector will follow the domestic resurgence as pubs, hotels, restaurants and other commercial entities gain the confidence to expand their businesses with conservatories and extensions.” However, the industry has some headwinds to face, not least being the inevitable rise in interest rates that must be round the corner. D&G Consulting has a good record with its forecasting although D&G Director, David Amos, admits that they, along with everyone else, got it wrong with the 2008/9 credit crunch. “This report is founded on economic and construction forecasts because that is what companies within the industry want – at least those who plan rather than fly by the seat of their pants!” said David Amos. “It

CROSSWORD EYE SPY & MORE... must be said that this is the first wholly good news forecast for the UK window and door industry for five years – i.e. since before the recession. The good news extends from the short term to the long term. Since the start of this year the much publicised strengthening of the UK economy has helped to kick start increased activity in the construction industry. The window and door industry has not only been boosted by the increased activity within much of the construction industry but also with the welcome increase in consumer spending – this after four years of austerity and belt tightening. The strong revival in house building has been propelled by the first part of Help to Buy (H2B1). Property transactions that are following on from the increasing housing transactions are providing a boost to housing improvements. Improvements that includes windows and doors. Almost all product ranges are expected to benefit throughout the four year forecast period including windows, composite, French and Bifold doors. After enduring a tough time over the past four years conservatory volumes will start to edge forward not only on the back of consumers having the confidence to splash out on a conservatory but also as businesses such as restaurants and hotels invest in a conservatory or orangery.
