Hi everyone This week we have included an article sent through from Roger Guillemet from Sunshine Coast Realty thanking everyone involved in the recent fundraising day for the family of Brent Dumper. Earlier this year Brent (who was part of the SCR team) was killed by a senseless act of violence following a house warming party at Hope Island on the Gold Coast. And while there was nothing anyone could do to change this situation, in typical Glasshouse Country style the community have come together to support Brent’s family both from local businesses who donated items for the fundraising efforts and the hundreds of people who attended on the special day. With $10,000 raised – you would have to say job will done to all those involved. The local businesses in our area are

regularly being called upon to help many different individuals, groups, schools and sporting groups across our community. Most of them do this not for recognition but as part of their commitment back to the local community. And I have to agree with Roger’s words to readers that you should remember to keep supporting your local businesses – because as this day proved they will be there to support the community in return. See Roger’s story on page 5.

Congratulations to our Glasshouse Ladies’ 2010 Fours Champions who earlier this month represented the Caboolture District and won the Zone Champion of Champions at Scarborough.

FUNERAL DIRECTORS Family owned & operated since 1897

The team of Margaret Lehmann, Di Garland, Anne Howard and Monika Duff defeated the Pine Rivers champions, (representing the North Brisbane Zone), to win the Zone title. They had a convincing five shot win over 21 ends in difficult conditions, which included a stoppage for rain during the game. Well done ladies on a great achievement for yourselves, our local Club, and the Caboolture District. Their next goal is to win the State titles at Bribie Island next month.

As we head into the final days before competition starts in the XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi, our local news is already dominated by stories of our high achieving sportsmen and women who are doing a great job representing the Glasshouse Country area. Turn to our sports pages from page 40, to read more about the many successes of our local sports teams and individuals who are out-performing their rivals with some impressive results.

He is still working on the family pineapple farm at Glass House Mountains, a job he has been doing since he was 14 years old. He works five days a week, from 7.00am to 5.00pm and puts men half his age to shame with his energy and stamina, plowing, picking, tractor work and whatever other work needs doing. He puts his energy down to eating pineapple on his peanut butter sandwiches at morning smoko and eating a fresh garlic glove (one segment) every evening with a XXXX or two or three. The garlic comes from his own vegetable garden which he finds time for as well. Rick and his wife Margaret have been happily married for almost 56 years. They have four children and 10 grandchildren, and while they have travelled widely, including pineapple tours to Hawaii and South Africa, he’s never wanted to move away from the area. “My father, grandfather and mother used to say, ’It’s a beautiful area, you’ve got the mountains to look at, the air is nice and clear, what else do you want in life?’” Rick said. “My father reckons it was the best move he ever made coming from cold old Scotland to here.”

Rick and Margaret Moffat with his Morris Z Ute Also special to him are two Morris Z Utes which he keeps running. The blue one (originally brown) is the car he went on dates with Margaret in after they met at the Beerwah Hotel where she was waitressing. Rick said he still enjoys his leisure time at the Beerwah Pub with fellow pineapple farmer and long time local Ken Fullerton, on Saturday afternoons for the raffles. Born in Beerburrum Hospital (which was later moved to Maleny), Rick is as much a part of the land as the pineapples he has grown all his life. The Moffat family even has a road named after them which Rick said is “marvellous.” If you would like to have a drink with Rick, he will be at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club to celebrate from 5.00pm on Thursday, October 7. For Rick, there is one final special message, “Happy Birthday from all the family.”

Community and business rally to support local family Contributed by Roger Guillemet

A huge success. That was the unanimous verdict of all concerned with the results of the fundraising day for the family of Brent Dumper whose life was tragically taken on May 30 this year.

B

RSL Club

DINING

Brent Dumper fundraising day The weather was absolutely perfect, the sun was shining with a light breeze blowing. This may have been partly responsible for the large number of people who turned out to support Brent's family. Literally hundreds of people gathered at Ross and Cherie Cooney's acreage property in Landsborough. It was an ideal location as the large entertainment area was set up for the variety of musicians who played nonstop for eight hours. Whilst the adults lazed beneath the trees, the younger ones amused themselves in the jumping castles and played table tennis, badminton, swingball and enjoyed the playground equipment. The sausages sizzled all through the day as people generously bought copious amounts of raffle tickets. Given the outstanding calibre of the raffles this was no surprise. If you have ever questioned why people choose to live in the hinterland, then you only need to see the community spirit that events such as these engender to find your answer. In these tough economic times when small local businesses are struggling and there is little spare cash to go around, the generosity displayed was amazing. Not one of the local businesses approached refused to help and the quality of the donations was truly astounding and was largely responsible for the amount of money raised on the day, the grand total reaching $10,000. cont. on page 10

Beerwah High students Deanne, Haylee, Mitchell, Brendan and Caitlan get some top tips from tennis coach Tom Farrell, centre Last Thursday, September 16, Tennis Queensland coach, Tom Farrell, conducted a tennis training and mentoring session at Beerwah State High School as part of Disability Action Week (September 5-11). Students with disabilities were offered a range of fun and interactive activities. Tom’s assistant coach for the event was Beerwah High’s very own tennis talent, Mitchell James, a Year 11 student. He recently won gold and silver medals at the Australian Championships, is a member of the Australian Special Olympics Tennis Team and will compete in Greece in 2011. Mitchell, who usually undertakes an apprenticeship on Thursdays, came in especially for the event. “I just love playing tennis. I’m happy to share my knowledge with the younger kids,” he said. Michelle Tuck, Head of Special Education Services, said the school has 47 students with disabilities from grade 8 to 12, across five disability categories: intellectual impairment, physical impairment, autistic spectrum disorder,

hearing impairment and speech/language impairment. She thought the event was a great opportunity for the students. “A lot of these activities a lot of the students might not have tried before because of the competitive nature of them. It allows the students to discover their potential in a different range of areas and it highlights, in Disability Action Week, the inclusive nature of the school and that we’re willing to give everyone a go,” she said. Tom, a Tennis Australia coach for 20 years, said the event was sponsored by Tennis Australia and Tennis Queensland. “I devote my time, free of charge, for this sort of thing because I think everyone should be given an opportunity and I find that at the end of the day if I get smiles from anyone I’m happy.” There were definitely plenty of smiles on the day. One happy student who participated, Haylee, said “I’m having a good time. I like the games. My favourite was the stealing the balls one.” Brendan added. “It’s fun. The best part was getting onto the court. This will encourage me to keep playing tennis.”

When local music teacher Anne Johns had a conversation with the Landsborough Market conveners about the needs of a local person who faced some transport challenges, little did she realise what she was about to start. Market stallholders began raising funds to buy an adult tricycle and after some months of fundraising they had raised $700.00. With the generous help of local traders, Beerwah Cycles, the tricycle was ordered and purchased. Another local trader in Landsborough, Denise from the Landsborough Supermarket Country Store (727) has offered space for storage of the tricycle, which was presented to the new owner last month. The market community is thrilled to be involved in this fundraising project and to know that they have been able to make a real difference to a member of the local community. Flushed with success, the market community will continue fundraising this time on a long term project to help preserve the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall. The Hall Committee has until recently focused on fixing problems as they arose. A full building and engineering inspection and Report has been commissioned after initial findings have highlighted areas such as the floor and stumps that need to be addressed. The final report will enable the Committee to put in place a business plan to identify priorities for the ongoing maintenance and renovations that a building of this age requires. The School of Arts Memorial Hall is a landmark building in the area and as it approaches its centennial in 2024, a building restoration fund is being established,

When Dean Jacobs, 31, from Beerwah, wrote and illustrated his new children’s book, Emma Cries, he not only created a delightful book for the enjoyment of others but also an enduring memento for his family. That’s because the two characters in his book, Alicia and Emma, are in fact, his own children, and it was his daughter Alicia, almost three, who inspired the story. “When Alicia was very little she was quite good, didn’t cry too much, then as soon as Emma came along it was a bit of a shock to the system because she cried at everything. One day Alicia came up to me and said, ‘Emma’s crying’, I said, ‘What’s she crying for?’ And it got me thinking it might be a good idea for a book. I wrote it in an hour and a half and spent the next four months illustrating it,” Dean said. 'Emma Cries', which is aimed for two to four year olds, has been nominated by the Children’s Book Council of Australia for Picture Book of the Year 2010/2011. The winner will be announced in October, 2011. The book is the first title to be published by Bizy Bug Publishing which Dean and his wife, Kylene, created in addition to their Bizy Bug Creative design studio which is based in Beerwah. This isn’t Dean’s first children book though. He also wrote and illustrated 'Where Are You Baby Roo?', which is in book stores now. Dean’s foray into children’s books began with him illustrating other writers’ books but he’s enjoys both writing and illustrating equally. In the beginning, Dean used to draw his illustrations by hand, but now he uses the computer to create his amazing pictures. He admits it is a

time-consuming process but one definitely worth the effort. 'Emma Cries' was such a personal story to me, I really wanted to create this so they (Alicia and Emma) can look back on it as well,” Dean said. “Almost like a memory of what they were like when they were kids. I also think it’s something for every mother, father, and child out there, as it’s something people can really relate to. I really think it’s something special and I hope other people think it’s special as well.” 'Emma Cries' will initially be available from Angus and Robertson, Caloundra in October, or you can order a copy at www.bizybugcreative.com

Put the Spring back in your step for Summer Spring is already here and, like most, you may be feeling a bit sluggish after sipping too many hot chocolates and spending your time inside during those cold weather months. Never fear, because low-fat cookbook Queen, Annette Sym, has some great tips for whipping you back into shape this Spring. International award-winning author Annette Sym of the best selling Symply Too Good To be True low-fat cookbook series, including the new Book 6, said Spring was the best time of year to start an ‘inside-to-out makeover’. “There are such a variety of great fresh fruits and vegetables coming into season that will not only help you to shed those extra kilos that have crept up over winter but that also have some extraordinary health benefits too,” Annette said. Annette who struggled with her weight for years knows all too well how difficult it can be to break bad habits but managed to lose 35kgs in 20 months and maintain a healthy lifestyle for 18 years. “In our hectic lives, it is easy to put our well being on the backburner and before we know it, summer has arrived and we are panicking about putting on our swimsuit,” Annette said. cont. from page 5 Karyn, Katie and Jessie were so appreciative of everyone’s support and generosity. The money will obviously be put to good use but equally important was the fact that hundreds of people turned up to offer their support on the day. Karyn adds a word of warning here. "To all the silly men out there that keep putting off getting their wills done and reviewing their life insurance. The extra strain that dying intestate creates for those left behind is immeasurable and avoidable, go and see your solicitor tomorrow!"

We offer a personalised service from the first phone call requesting a quote to the finished job. Given we’re family owned and operated, we can pass on the savings of our low overheads to our customers. What are the highlights of your job? Running my own business, I am really enjoying the personal service that I can offer my customers, being able to spend time with them and advise them on what exactly has been done, and why. The advice I give is precise and plays a vital part in the customer being able to make an informed decision about pest management. How long have you been operating your business? I have over 10 years experience in the industry and decided to set up my own company this year. I have many contacts in the industry and have worked closely in conjunction with Les Wildman Building Inspections for many years, a very reputable building inspector who trusts my judgement when it comes to timber pest inspections. I have also supervised for two major companies in South East Queensland in both pre-construction and post-construction pest management. What are your operating hours and contact details? We operate a 24 hour call out service, and no job is too big or too small, too early or too late. Call us now on 0420 538 890.

Community group updates

LANDSBOROUGH AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY Inc Contributed by Wendy Dixon Mould is a menace, not just in the home but also in museums, and the humid weather we have experienced this year has encouraged its growth. Mould spores live in the air just waiting for the right conditions to help them grow. Moisture, warmth and something to cling to, such as oil, dirt, food or pollen will create the problem. There are lots of chemicals designed to kill off the mould but unfortunately they can damage fibres and remove colour. So when using them, do a test on an unseen area. Grandma removed mould from household linen by placing it on dew laden grass on a good sunny day. The moisture caused the mould to release the spores and the sun killed the spores. Great if you have plenty of time to spare. Always vacuum mould. Breathing in quantities of spores is injurious to health. The most important thing to do is to ensure everything is cleaned thoroughly before storing. Also ensure that the cupboard is clean and dry and well ventilated. Don’t forget to clean the inside of suitcases. Ventilation and air movement is very important in storage areas. A musty smell is a fair indication of mould. Some of our volunteers are systematically checking display cases and cleaning any dust and mould build-up. If you would like to join in on alternate Monday mornings, call Wendy at the museum on Sundays 5494 1755.

Beerwah Lions Club Happenings Contributed by Una Robinson

Sponsorship

The Lions Club is proud to announce their sponsorship of the Power ‘Twinnies’ Pelican and Sea Bird rescue service for an application for a grant to upgrade their bird pen floors which will protect the animals’ tender feet whilst in care. The work done there by the Power family, especially by the twins, is absolutely incredible. This is a 24/7 task with some 680 birds being treated before being released back into the wild already this year. (This was as of August). At the time of the Lions members’ visit, there were around 180 patients being treated in their ICU, as well as being cared for in other treatment areas. All are lovingly given names on cards with health records being maintained.

Lions Medical Research Personality Quest

It is with pleasure that Beerwah Lions introduces their entrant for the Personality Quest this year. The Clubs entrant’s young lady is Coral Manson from Beerburrum who will soon be undertaking various fun and fundraising events in the community. Her first duty was to draw a raffle at the August 8 meeting which saw her draw her mother’s lucky ticket. The prize was a package of chocolates very kindly donated by the Club’s newest member Lion Gwen Kippen.

Lighting up Glasshouse Country

Lions Club members will again be assisting with the Xmas Lights judging in December. This is always a wonderful community effort with prizes for those winners.

Barbeque for Prostate Cancer, September 26

Beerwah Lions Club, as have many other communities, registered to hold a special barbeque to raise awareness of prostate cancer. This is scheduled for September 26 at Beerburrum, the Club’s organiser for this community project is Lion Robert Greenwood. In its early stage, prostate cancer usually has no symptoms. However, if detected early, prostate cancer is often treatable and curable. If you are aged 50 and over (or 40 and over, with a family history of the disease), talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and, if necessary, be tested. It is now a simple and non invasive test and is a step that could save your life. Did you know that as many men die from prostate cancer as women die from breast cancer? Yet few men know what the disease is, who is affected, or if they are at risk, so, come along on September 26 to Beerburrum and support Lion Rob Greenwood, the Club Lions Medical Research Personality organiser, to help the men in our community. Exercise

Parliamentary news

It was interesting to receive some figures recently that suggested that some 21 per cent of Queensland children are overweight or obese. These issues are unacceptable and concerning given that we have the weather, parks and sporting facilities and wealth of information available on health issues. Childhood obesity can lead to other health complications including asthma, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and higher cholesterol. The obesity concerns were raised by RJs Health and Fitness of Sippy Downs, who suggest that the obesity battle can start to be addressed by increased activity and basic nutrition education with the results also helping to make happier children. I encourage residents to continue being active and maintaining positive exercise regimes to ensure our health is as good as it can be.

Community support

I congratulate the IGA supermarket chain and its management and staff for their ongoing support of the various communities in which they are active. I am advised that in the past 12 months, local IGA stores have contributed some $850,000 toward local community groups. This is a wonderful effort and I commend the local stores, management and staff for their dedication. Communities on the Sunshine Coast and across Australia and community relies heavily on the generosity of businesses, groups and individuals and it is encouraging to see high levels of support locally.

Prostate Support group

The Sunshine Coast Prostate Support Group can assist in the support of those with prostate cancer. The group meets on the last Tuesday of each month (except December) from 9.30am - 12.00noon at the Maroochy RSL Sub branch meeting room, Memorial Avenue, Maroochydore. Morning tea is provided. For further Information about support for prostate cancer suffers, visit the website of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia at www.prostate. org.au

As always, Parliament saw plenty of debate. A range of Bills were discussed and passed including new laws surrounding the employment of Ministerial staff and increasing the transparency of senior government officers such as the Ombudsman and Auditor General. Of greater interest to locals will be the new Land Valuation Act and the finalised swimming pool legislation. I would encourage anyone interested in learning more about how valuations will now be calculated to visit www.derm.qld.gov. au/property/valuations/index.html. Similarly, all pool owners should ensure they are familiar with the requirements of the new laws by checking out www.dip.qld.gov.au/pool-fencing/index.php.

New office now open for business

My new office is now open for business at Suite 4/70 on Maple Street, Maleny. Please address all correspondence to PO Box 727, Maleny, 4552. My new phone number is (07) 5435 2013 and my email remains unchanged, glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au.

Out and About

It has been a busy few weeks around the Glass House region with the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre AGM and the Glass House Country Debutante Ball. The Glass House community should be really proud of how you all continue to come together, whether it is to plan strategies for community gardens or carrying on the tradition of welcoming our young ladies into society. The community was also out in force at the Glass House Mountains State School Festival last Sunday. Well done to the P and C for hosting another great event for the parents and students.

Sports funding

Schools, not-for-profit community organisations or sports and recreation clubs in the Glass House electorate have the chance to apply for some vital funding under the Active Inclusion and Infrastructure program. Interested sporting groups can apply for up to $50,000 in the ‘Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Category’ or up to $5,000 for club support projects. With $4.2 million up for grabs, it would be fantastic to see some of our Glass House organisations receive much needed funding. Apply for funding online by October 15 at www.sportrec.qld.gov.au

Cribb Street pavement repairs

Zooming into 2030

I would like to advise you of the pavement repairs taking place in Cribb Street, Landsborough (between Landsborough-Maleny Road and Mill Street) on Thursday, September 23 at 6.00pm until approximately 2.00am (weather permitting). One lane will be closed from 6.00pm until 8.00pm; both lanes will be closed from 8.00pm until 2.00am with a detour via Mill Street or Tytherleigh Avenue. Traffic control will be in attendance in order to maintain traffic flow. I would like to urge residents to please be patient during these necessary works.

Rock and Roll fund raiser for Chappie

Get your dancing shoes on to help raise much needed funds for Beerwah’s High School Chaplain. The all age’s Rock and Roll night is being held at the Beerwah Community Hall on Saturday, October 9, from 7.30pm until midnight. Tickets are $20.00 per adult and $10.00 if you are a student. For tickets contact Allie Lovett on 0428 563 894.

Council Cabs

I would like to remind residents about the Council Cabs, which is an affordable transport service for people aged 60 and over; people with a disability, including people with a mobility impairment (DSP concession card holders); and carers and minors of eligible people accompanying them (carers card or companion card holders). If you are eligible for this service, Council Cabs will collect you from your home in the morning and drive you to your local shopping centre. If you book a return trip you will be picked up at around lunch time, at the same place you were dropped off, and returned to your home address. To book a Council Cab, call 1300 139 433 by 12.30 pm the day before. Telephone operators are available 24 hours a day. There is a limit of three bags per customer, and a small charge of $2.00 per person, per one way trip. For the Beerwah, Glasshouse Mountains, Peachester area, the service is available on Tuesdays, to and from the Beerwah Marketplace. For those living in the Landsborough, Mooloolah Valley and Mount Mellum area, the service is also available on a Tuesday, for the Maleny Road Shopping Centre.

As part of developing the first Sunshine Coast Community Plan, Council is running the ‘Zooming into 2030’ competition which closes on Friday, September 24. So if you have kids in your family, who are photoshop whizzes, deadly with the digital camera or are wicked with words, it would be great if you could encourage them to enter the competition. This could be a great activity for the first week of the school holidays! To enter is really easy, all you need to do is fill out an entry form, submit a photograph, collage or photoshopped image and write a caption that starts with, “In 2030 I hope …” For more details go to: http://www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=zooming-2030)

Sewerage and water charges for not-for-profit groups

On July 1, 2010 Unitywater became responsible for providing water and sewerage services, including billing, to all residences, businesses and community organisations in the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions. Unitywater has currently determined that it will not provide any concessions for the not-for-profit sector. Prior to the new arrangements, Council provided reduced water and sewerage charges for public grounds and some not-for-profit organisations. These reductions were in the form of rates concessions and community service obligations. Council is now discussing the need to provide support to the not-for-profit sector, in the form of a community grant and will consider the establishment of a Water and Sewerage Funding Program for not-for-profit organisations within the Sunshine Coast to provide support towards water and sewerage charges for the current financial year. As Unitywater is a separate business from the Sunshine Coast Council, any financial support provided by council would need to be in the form of a community grant. If endorsed by Council, the Water and Sewerage Funding Program will primarily aim to provide assistance for not-for-profit organisations as a community benefit. Following Council’s Ordinary Meeting early in October, additional information will be available through Council's website, and if a funding program is established, information will also be available by calling Council’s Customer Service on 5475 7272.

Help reduce the stigma in awareness month Over a million people in Australia live with depression. Over two million have an anxiety disorder. With the right treatment, most people recover. beyondblue: the national depression initiative invites all Australians to help raise awareness of anxiety and depression during ‘Anxiety and Depression Awareness Month’ in October. According to beyondblue’s research, community awareness of anxiety and depression has grown over the past decade, however, stigma associated with these common illnesses remains high. As a result, many people are too embarrassed or ashamed to seek help and don’t get the treatment they need. beyondblue Anxiety and Depression Awareness Month provides an opportunity for workplaces, community groups and individuals to become involved. beyondblue CEO, Ms Leonie Young says there are easy and effective ways to help raise awareness of depression and anxiety. “Sometimes the simplest acts have the greatest impact - just talking openly about anxiety and depression helps reduce the stigma. It’s our aim to make sure no-one is left in the dark about depression and anxiety."

Order beyondblue FREE beyondblue Awareness Kits for yourself, your colleagues, teammates or community group members; wear a beyondblue wristband or take a beyondblue carry bag with you when you’re shopping; encourage your family and friends to keep active - organise a group walk, bike ride or game in the park; become a workplace or community group organiser for beyondblue Anxiety and Depression Awareness Month; organise a blue-themed day or event and screen the beyondblue DVD Stories of Hope and Recovery; display beyondblue awareness posters on your staff notice board, in your local community centre or club, or other community group space; use a beyondblue mouse-mat throughout the year - it’s a great way to remind people that it is OK to talk about anxiety and depression every day. Order you FREE information kits now in time for October. Kits are available for individuals and workplaces and include beyondblue posters, shopping bags, fact sheets, fridge magnets, wristbands and more! To order go to www.beyondblue.org.au/adamonth or call 1300 22 4636.

Every ten minutes, somebody in Australia suffers from a stroke; about 20 percent of those strokes happen to people under 55 years old. Following National Stroke Week (September 13-19) St John Ambulance (Qld) is urging the community to educate themselves on how to provide first aid assistance to someone suffering from a stroke. A stroke occurs when an artery taking blood to the brain becomes blocked or bursts. Paralysis of parts of the body or speech problems are common after a stroke, however these effects can be diminished through early intervention such as first aid. By undertaking St John First Aid training, course participants are equipped with the skills and confidence to deliver quality first aid assistance in medical situations. St John (Qld) offers a wide range of comprehensive first aid training courses, call 1300 360 455 or visit www.stjohnqld.com.au to book. .

The lovers Venus and Mars are doing an amazing dance at the moment. They are together again on Monday, October 4, just before Venus turns retrograde and they move away from each other in opposite directions. They can be clearly seen in the western evening sky. The New Moon falls in Libra on Friday, October 8, beginning a new cycle in our relationships, and in our need for fairness and harmony. With Venus the ruler of Libra currently in Scorpio, and about to go retrograde, this lunar month is an excellent time for deepening your partnerships and close friendships, particularly by revisiting and clearing any unfinished business between you (however scary that may feel!). Venus goes retrograde on Friday, October 8, the day of the New Moon. Venus signifies our urge to relate to others, so don’t be surprised if old friends and lovers reappear in your life during the retrograde phase of Venus - you may hear from people you haven’t seen for ages. Venus is

Click and compare prices From smart phone applications to everyday appliances, more than a thousand products are road tested by CHOICE every year. Now CHOICE’S members and visitors will be able to purchase those products online armed with the best prices from the most suitable retailers. The consumer group has announced it is teaming up with leading comparison shopping site Getprice in a partnership that will provide price information about a range of products with an option to purchase. “This partnership will provide members and visitors with a channel to find the best value for products that CHOICE has tested and recommended from Getprice’s database of over two million products from some one thousand retailers,” says CHOICE’s commercial director, George Perry.

retrograde for six weeks until November 19. Venus will only be visible as the Evening Star for another few weeks. From now on, she will start to appear lower in the evening sky until she is no longer visible (as she gets closer and closer to the Sun). Her disappearance was seen in ancient cultures as Venus’ passage through the underworld, followed by her rebirth and transformation as the Morning Star. The Full Moon in Aries on Saturday, October 23 is a true Blue Moon, the second of two successive Full Moons in Aries. This second Full Moon in Aries again highlights your ability to be assertive in your life, standing in your power as a warrior of one kind or another, and brings to fruition any project where you have been pioneering, creating something very new. Talking about organ donation at your local library Sunshine Coast Libraries have been offered an opportunity to get on board Australia’s new DonateLife organ and tissue donation campaign and help raise awareness that organ donation can save lives and tissue donation can improve quality of life. Unfortunately, there are over 1,700 people on Australia’s organ transplant waiting lists and more than one person will die every week waiting. Sunshine Coast Regional Donor Coordinators will be presenting the ‘Seeds of Hope’ program throughout October in libraries across the region to explain what people need to do to protect their wishes, and how to find out about local processes. Combined with real life experiences from a local recipient and donor family, Matty and Wendy, these sessions are sure to have a lasting impact and to change lives. As part of the ‘Seeds of Hope’ program, Wendy will share her very moving story about her daughter who died in a car accident six years ago and her decision to donate her daughter's organs for transplantation. Matty will recount his survival after two kidney transplants. The first organ donation was from his mother and the second from a deceased donor. Sessions are free and with places filling fast, bookings are essential. A session will be held at Beerwah Library on Wednesday, October 13, 1.30pm - 2.30pm. To book, phone 5494 0221. More information is available at the Sunshine Coast Libraries www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and the DonateLife website www.donatelife.gov.au

Competition heating up in final weeks before Delhi?

I took some photos of some cockatoos the other morning from our front garden in Barrs Road, Glass House Mountains, at my neighbours wishing well. My hubby said it looks like the judges are sitting on the fence judging and giving points for the PAIRS LANDING competition. I particularly like this one (below), as it looks like the judges are one side of the post, and one is not impressed, with his head down, while the coach sits watching from the other side of the post. A BIG Thank you

I would like to personally thank the ladies from the Glass House Legacy Laurel Club, and also Bill, Cid and Glenda for their wonderful help selling badges during legacy week. Also the public who were so generous, what a wonderful result $4,447.00. Thank you all so very much. Macy Southern, President, Glass House Legacy Laurel Club

Commercial areas are generally lacking in adequate parking as it is and any further relaxation of the requirements would result in chaotic situations. LACA Inc. is also asking why our Councillors do not report on important issues such as this one, in their weekly columns in the paper? Surely issues such as this, that will have a considerable impact, should be included in these columns. A.Husband Secretary, LACA Inc

Words of comfort

Back on the Unity bandwagon

Just a few short weeks ago, my wife died of a combination of emphysema and Alzheimer’s disease. We had been together for 59 years, and married for 58. To see the pain and suffering my love went through was indescribable and if it had not been for my family, the last 10 years would have been far worse. There are, I know, many people out there who are going through, and will go through, the same thing. As my wife lay dying, my daughter wrote poems for me. I have, with her permission, taken an excerpt from one of these poems from her forthcoming book of poetry, in the hope these words will help other people in similar circumstances, and maybe help them to understand the pain and heartbreak they are going through. If there is anyone going through what I have been through and would like someone to talk to, I am here to have a chat – give me a call on 5494 6383. Arthur Lovewell Beerwah Extracted from ‘The sun will rise tomorrow’ by Sharon Whitecross

I am a thousand shining stars I’m in the grains of sand I’m in the cold and frosty bite That grips your freezing hand. I am the moon that lights your way In the darkness of the night And I’m busy sending laughter To make your sad day bright. I’m dusting off the rainbows And whispering your name Softly in your dreams to you Reminding you, that the sun will rise again.

SEPTEMBER 22 2010

So don’t cry too long darlings And listen as I explain That through your dark days remember The sun will always rise again.

Keep us informed!

Landsborough Area Community Association Inc. has been informed by Residents Association South Sunshine Coast (formerly Caloundra Ratepayers Association) that Sunshine Coast Council is considering a relaxation of the current off-street parking requirements for new developments in commercial and residential areas. LACA Inc. is opposed to this relaxation of the requirements due to the problems which would be associated with the increased amount of on-road parking which would result. Safety issues in residential areas are a major concern especially for children crossing roads, lack of visibility in general for people residing in the areas and also the impact on streetscapes and the general aspect of the areas affected.

First, allow me to say that I have kept abreast of the waffle in the local papers, and read the prepared pages etc. What I would like to know are the answers are the following 1. Who gives Premier Bligh the right to steal, cease or whatever, our water? 2. Has the ceased, stolen or confiscated water been paid for, if so, when and by whom? 3. Unitywater, where did this company, firm or what ever come from? 4. Who is responsible for the setting up of Unitywater in the first place? 5. Is Unitywater a public company, floated on the stock market, shareholders etc or what. Just who has the controlling interest or shares? Now my next statement touches on a big concern. If our Sunshine Coast Regional Council were unable to manage our water, etc, necessitating the Bligh Government to step in and cease our water. Why would illustrious leader, Prime Minister Gillard suggest she will give five regional councils two hundred million to manage Infrastructure in the regions? Hello, if they cannot manage our or their own water, how are they going to manage infrastructure within their region? Someone has missed something somewhere along the track. By the way, has anyone seen a meter reader anywhere in the region, reading water meters? Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

A low act

Over the past five years I have been watching the Resource Recovery Centre build their recycled garden. I have walked through this garden many times experiencing the tranquility, the sound of nature and loved to see the sculpture and other recycled trinkets they added to their garden. I now put some of my broken items in the garden to give it added colour and something for my grand children to enjoy. This recycled garden has been a target for many, willfully removing sculptures and ornaments and even removing plants in pots or straight out of the ground over the past month. I have found that if you ask for a cutting you can get it but stealing from this community group is a low act. Maybe you are not aware that Community Recycling Inc. is a major sponsor of many activities within the Glasshouse Mountains area. Shame on you. P. Thompson Beerwah

Landcare groups in Queensland can apply for grants of up to $5,000 for individual projects or $10,000 for genuine collaborative ventures under a new $150,000 funding program. The inaugural Queensland Government Landcare Grants Program 2011 was announced last week at the annual State Landcare Conference at Caloundra. Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Minister Stephen Robertson said the new program is aimed at assisting not-for-profit landcare groups to implement local projects in their community and provides $150,000 for small one-off grants for landcare groups from metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas throughout Queensland. Examples of eligible groups include Landcare, Bushcare, Coastcare, Waterwatch, Indigenous groups, 'Friends of' groups and other environmental and sustainable land management groups. Mr Robertson said the Landcare Grants program was in addition to the $100,000 Natural Resources Awareness grants, which were targeted at wider stakeholder groups such as schools, community NRM groups and landcare groups with help from businesses and local government. For more information about the Landcare Grants Program, please visit the Department of Environment and Resource Management's website at www.derm.qld.gov.au <http://www. derm.qld.gov.au/>

FINANCE FOR RENOVATORS With the costs of selling your home and buying a new one often in excess of $50,000, It’s hardly surprising that some people choose not to move house at all. They make the most of their house – or the land – they already have. Renovating or rebuilding allows people to maintain their lifestyle, neighbours, infrastructure and all the other things that they like and are familiar with – and still live in their ideal home. However, although you avoid some of the upheaval, issues and expenses involved in

buying a new property, like stamp duty and conveyancing, there are still a lot of things to be taken into consideration. As Smartline Adviser Teresa Harrison explains, in terms of finance there is a big difference between cosmetic home improvements and structural renovations. ‘A loan for cosmetic improvements is usually straight forward if the applicant has equity in their property,’ says Teresa. ‘A loan for structural improvements can be more complex, especially when there is insufficient equity

SECRETS OF A GOOD MORTGAGE BROKER!

in the property at the time of application. The outcome of a loan application will often depend on how much value the renovations will be adding to the property.’ The most sensible approach is to call on your Personal Mortgage Adviser, Teresa Harrison, to discuss your options before you get too far Call Adviser Teresa Harrison. down the road. T: 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 After all, you don’t want www.smartline.com.au/tharrison to have costly architectural plans drawn up, or your heart completely set on a new home, until you can be sure of your borrowing capacity.

A good broker can help you to understand the various loan deals that are on offer, explaining the features that can make a big difference to your repayments. Your broker will also lodge your application. Nowadays this is often done electronically saving time. Your broker will even chase your application with the lender. So your broker is more than your advisor, they are your single point of contact for the whole process – and they do most of the work for you! Using a mortgage broker can result in saving time and money.

Is divorce inevitable?

Many years ago, a neighbour turned up early one morning in tears. Between the sobs she told us that her husband was leaving her. This was her second marriage and they had two children. As she talked and my wife and I listened, she shared something very insightful about relationships. She commented and illustrated it by ticking off on her fingers. “When I left my first husband it was because of this, this, this, and this and I was so happy with my second husband. However now I realise that he also has this, this, and this, though maybe a different set of problems. I should never have left my first husband but tried to work through our differences instead of being so quick to give up.” Now I realise that many marriage breakdowns result from huge problems but it seems increasingly common that people simply get bored with one another or feel their expectations are not being met and that someone else would do a much better job. The grass is always greener…….This was never God’s plan for marriage not just because he knows that broken marriages result in broken lives but because the whole idea of marriage actually paints a picture of His relationship with us. In fact, Jesus is referred

Kids & Youth ÊÊ Programs

to as the bridegroom and the church as his bride. The church described here is not a building but people who have a relationship with Jesus. That relationship begins as marriage does with a love for one another and a commitment to each other. In contrast to a human marriage, however, God always understands us and keeps every promise he makes! He loves us no matter what, and continually gives us support and strength when we need it. If you are struggling in your marriage I want to encourage you not to give up but to seek help in counselling to try and regain the happy times you once had. The ingredients for making it work are still there but may have gone a bit stale and need help to be revived. Many organisations including churches offer marriage counselling. If you are not yet married, I want to encourage you to find the right person! Prepare by doing pre-marriage counselling (again, offered in many churches). If you have already faced the pain of separation, I want to encourage you that a relationship with God never ends in divorce. Romans chapter 8 verse 39 says that “Nothing shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Love struck koalas need our help It’s Spring and love is in the air – especially if you’re a koala. This means that at the moment more koalas are on the move looking for a little romance. And with this extra activity comes extra danger for the koala. Where there were once millions, scientists’ estimate that as few as 100,000 koalas may be left in Queensland, and in the south-east corner, they only number in the low thousands. Over 550 koalas are killed each year by dogs and cars in the south-east region, and right now is the most dangerous time for them.

Students call a weed 'a weed' with new online detective tool Students can now identify some of Queensland’s most dangerous weeds with the click of a button and a look through a virtual magnifying glass. 'Weed Detectives', an initiative of Biosecurity Queensland, is a new, interactive online activity aimed at middle to upper primary and secondary school students. Biosecurity Queensland senior biosecurity officer, Petra Skoien, said by using the virtual magnifying glass, students could find and identify up to 10 invasive weeds. "The online activity has been developed to introduce students to a range of weeds in different regions around Queensland," she said. “If children can become familiar with what these weeds look like and the damage they cause, then we are helping to build a generation of 'weed literate' adults. “Weed Detectives also links the learner to weed fact sheets and loads of extensive information about these weeds on the Biosecurity Queensland website.” The Weed Detectives online activity page can be found via the Biosecurity Queensland website at www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au then click on ‘Weeds’, ‘Pest Animals and Ants’, ‘Education and careers’, then ‘Educational Resources’. For more information on declared weeds in Queensland, or to report a suspect weed, contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.

With the breeding season now upon us – which is generally Spring and early Summer – it’s more likely than ever that koalas will be seen moving over the ground patrolling their territory or in search of a mate. In addition, juvenile koalas tend disperse away from their mother’s home range at this time as well. Being young and inexperienced, they are even more vulnerable to dog attacks or being killed whilst crossing a road. Koala conservation groups – such as Sunshine Coast Koala Wildlife Rescue (SCKWR) – are asking all of us to take a little extra care on the roads at night. If you live or regularly drive through areas where koalas are known to live, slow down and take a little more notice of what may be ahead on the road. Koalas are hard to see on the road, but by slowing down and scanning the road and the roadside, you’ll have more chance to see if they ahead and safely take avoidance action. Remember that your headlights will dazzle them and so they are less likely to get out of your way. If you’re lucky enough to live in the same area as koalas and you have dogs, you really should keep them under control at night. It’s not much to ask to help protect our most iconic animal, and one which needs our help to remain as part of our local environment. If you find a sick or injured koala, SCKWR suggest that you don’t try and touch it or pick it up, as they can become aggressive and inflict serious injury. If possible, place a towel or blanket over it to keep it in the dark. Keep dogs and other people away so that it doesn’t become stressed. Call the SCKWR 24 hour rescue service numbers – 0423 618 740 or 0431 300 729 – and then keep an eye on the koala until the rescuer arrives. They’ll then transport it to the Australian Wildlife Hospital at Australia Zoo for specialised treatment.

Wildlife rescuer Murray Chambers The Sunshine Coast Koala Wildlife Rescue is always on the lookout for local businesses to become a sponsor and for people to help out. To contact them, just call one of the rescue service numbers.

Waste charge fair for everyone on the Coast Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to impose a minimum waste charge on southern residents, as well as those in the central and northern areas, ensures that every ratepayer contributes fairly to the cost of running the region’s waste business. Environment Portfolio Councillor, Keryn Jones, said that the removal of the waste levy in the southern area is not the reason for imposing a minimum charge; rather it is a move to make charges fairer across the region. Cr Jones said under the Caloundra system, group title residences were having their waste services subsidised by the rest of the region’s ratepayers. “Residents of the former Maroochy and Noosa have all paid a minimum waste charge for a long time in recognition that the majority of the costs of managing waste are not directly related to the amount picked up from bins in the kerbside collection service,” Cr Jones said. She said collection of kerbside wheelie bins was a very small component of the costs associated with managing and disposing of resident’s waste. The minimum waste charge ensures that along with wheelie bin collections and disposal or recycling, residents contribute to the cost of managing facilities.” Waste charges pay for wheelie bin provision and collection, staffing at Council facilities, street and park litter recycling and collections, providing rural transfer stations, maintaining closed landfills for 30 years, waste infrastructure including landfills and resource recovery centres, waste infrastructure for gas capture and education. “Council is reviewing the charging system for 11/12 to assess whether low waste generators can be better rewarded in future. “One way we already do this by having a two tiered charging system for wheelie bins. This means that residents who produce less waste and opt for a smaller bin pay significantly less than those with a larger bin,” Cr Jones said.

Get snapping—competition deadline extended Images of gorgeous sunsets, smiling faces, magnificent trees and words that capture a dream - they are all part of Sunshine Coast Council’s Zooming into 2030 - a competition which calls on residents to commit their vision to paper in a bid to nail the $1000 Mayoral prize. To try to get as many residents as possible to share their vision for 2030, the deadline for Zooming into 2030 has been extended to September 24. To enter, residents need to complete the caption, “In 2030 I hope…” and either take a photo or create an image that represents that vision. The photographs and visions will be used to help shape the Community Plan, a document that will inform Council’s decision making for the next 20 years. The images and captions will be used to illustrate the Community Plan. To enter Zooming into 2030, submit an image, a caption and an entry form. Details are available on Council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or by calling Council’s Customer Service Centre on 5475 7272. SEPTEMBER 22 2010 |

Another medal winning performance in the hinterland On September 11, three students from RB’s Freestyle Martial Arts competed in the WillMachado Brazilian Jui Jitsu Australasian Championships in Melbourne. The event, held annually, had close to 400 people from all over Australia and New Zealand nominate to compete. Rachel Burns, who lives locally and is trained by Robert Bowen, owner of RB’s Freestyle Martial Arts, was awarded a gold medal after winning in her division. “Having the technical ability to take out the gold at a national event is a reflection of the quality of coaching I have received and the support and co-operation of the other students I train with.” she said. The day after the competition, four students took the opportunity to do a training seminar with Brazilian legend Rigan Machado, who is based in Los Angeles, a truly inspiring experience. Any adult, regardless of age, fitness level or previous experience, can learn the technical

requirements of Brazilian Jui Jitsu. RB’s Freestyle Martial Arts provides a friendly, supportive atmosphere where you can improve your fitness, learn street-wise self-defense and make new friends. There is no pressure to compete, however, there are opportunities available for students who choose to. If you would like to learn more about Brazilian Jui Jistu, Rachel Burns you can contact Rob Bowen on 0403 410 137 or come and join us at the Rocky Creek Scout Camp on Old Gympie Road, Landsborough at 6.00pm on Tuesday and Thursday.

CPR Group launches sports equipment grants Queensland sporting clubs and associations can now apply for a CPR Group 2010 Sports Equipment Grant to purchase the equipment they need for training and games. The Program gives organisations the opportunity to access funding to buy new sports equipment such as balls, jerseys, bibs and markers. Incorporated, non-profit sporting organisations from across Queensland are invited to apply for the funding. The application process is simple and CPR Group is encouraging all eligible Queensland organisations to apply. CPR Group Director Michael Connelly said that funding is not readily available from other grant sources for operational sporting equipment. “We responded to this gap through the CPR Group Sports Equipment Grants program, which has been running since 2008,”

Mr Connelly said. “CPR Group is a leading Queensland project facilitation, consultation and sport planning company”. “We work with clubs and local government to plan and resource major projects and sporting facilities and we are excited to be offering Queensland sporting organisations this opportunity to access funding to help their cause,” he said. Since 1997, CPR Group has assisted thousands of organisations across Queensland to deliver in excess of $40 million worth of sport and recreation projects in local communities. Simple application forms and guidelines are now available on CPR Group’s website at www.cprgroup.com. au/grants, or by calling CPR Group’s head office on 5443 6247. Applications close on October 8, 2010.

Congratulations to our Glasshouse Ladies 2010 Fours Champions who went on to represent Caboolture District and win the Zone Champion of Champions played at Scarborough Bowls Club on Friday, September 10. Our Ladies, Margaret Lehmann, Di Garland, Anne Howard and Monika Duff (Skip), defeated the Pine Rivers Champions, (representing North Brisbane District), to win the Zone title. Well done girls on a great achievement for yourselves, our Club, and the Caboolture District. Their next goal is to win the State Regional titles at Bribie Island in late October. On Wednesday, September 8, we had 12 teams playing our monthly Jackpot Mixed Triples for the normal prizes and a $225.00 jackpot. The jackpot was not won so will be increased next month. The game for the day was drawn as ‘Lowest Winning Margin’ with the winners being Ernie Sherwood, Robbie Dean and Monika Duff with a margin of plus 1, over Marleen Bertram, Trevor Bertram and Jan Lawson. The runners-up with a margin of plus 5 were Jo Littler, Ron Wilson and Nev Littler. The ‘out of the hat’ prize went to Jim Osborne, Ruth Ellery and Nev Woolley. Last Wednesday, we had Ladies’ and Men’s Pairs and a game of triples. Winners were ‘out of the hat’. More players, both ladies and men are needed for Wednesday social bowls. Ernie Sherwood and Robbie Dean won Thursday’s Open Pairs on September 9, with 2 wins plus a margin of 23. The runners-up, for the third week in a row, were Di Hunt and Rae Farrell, with a highest winning margin of 22 in the first game. Premiers 2010! Contributed by Vicki Bauer

Glasshouse Hinterland AFC took three teams into the finals. Under 14 went out at the semi-final while Under 12 and Under 16 went into the grand final. The Under 16 team were defeated by Pomona, becoming the 2010 runners up. The Under 12 team beat Pomona 4-4-28 to 8-9-57 to become the AFLSCJ 2010 Premiers!! Well done and congratulations. It started from the first bounce and the Under 13s were dominant all over the ground until the final siren. If the on-ballers weren’t first to the ball they fought and scrapped until they won it back. When they were first to the ball, they gave us great drive into the forward line. Our forward line opened up with some great leads and strong marks. Our back line fought for every possession and repelled numerous attacks without letting Pomona score. However, all four of their goals came from free kicks; the first two from 25 metre penalties. Fortunately, we had come to play, so when Pomona did kick goals we hit straight back with our own. Nathaniel deserved the award of ‘Best on Ground’ and there were a number of other players who were right up there with him as were a number of other players who had their best game of the year. I would like to thank all people who put their time and efforts into this team, and the Club, and hope to see you all back again next year. “Go the Glasshouse Lions!”

The 2010 season did not finish on the way we had planned when both of our Junior Grand Final teams were defeated at Maroochydore on September 11. The under 12’s played Stanley Rivers and for most of the game were on top but could not get the away from the Wolves on the scoreboard. The second half was a see-sawing affair and the scores were locked 14 - 14 at fulltime. Extra time saw Stanley Rivers with all the momentum and they scored the all Graham Green with his ‘Best and important try to run out Winners 18-14. Fairest’ Award Under 16’s took on the Caloundra Sharks looking to avenge the defeat suffered in the first semi final but the big effort by the Bulldogs the week before against Bribie Island may have taken its toll and the boys went down 35 - 20. All the Bulldogs teams should be proud of the way they played in 2010 and should look forward to 2011 in a positive manner. On a Senior front, Bulldog Stalwart Graham Green was awarded the Sunshine Coast / Gympie Rugby League Best and Fairest Reserve Grade Player for 2010 and the Bulldogs Club would also like to congratulate Graham on his great season and also for his work with our Junior Players in what is a richly deserved award. Just a reminder that the presentation night for the Under 15’s to Reserve Grade will be at the Clubhouse on Saturday, October 9 at 6.30pm. Please RSVP to Dean Roberts on 0418 816 605 by October 4.

This is a very important time for soul searching and to devote more time to yourself. Renovating the home or a move is possible.

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Deep transformation can be taking place. Your home your career and your self worth can be challenged. This is a time of soul searching and having the faith that you will succeed in what your really want out of life. Watch that you don’t overspend on luxury items. Some changes can occur with a close relationship. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This is a very important time for you to keep focused on what you want and where you are going. Things should go pretty well your way. You may feel a need to take things at a quicker pace, if this is so, try and take things slower than usual, rushing will get you nowhere. A change of car is possible. LEO July 23 – August 22 Restrictions around your work and relationships could get you down at times. This is a time when you will need to keep centred and positive about your life. New opportunities are on their way. A new love can come into your life. Changes in the home are possible. A problem with a family member will be sorted out. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Love relationships can be quite prominent now. A new love can begin or an old love can come back into your life. Try not to set too high a standard, there is no such thing as a perfect person, everyone has some faults. A holiday may now be in the making which can work out well.

and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed of yourself!” The man does as he is told, and goes out into the pouring rain. He calls out into the dark “hello, are you still there?” “Yes,” comes back the answer. “Do you still need a push?” calls out the husband. “Yes, please!” comes the reply from the dark. “Where are you?” asks the husband. “Over here on the swing”.....
