Hi Everyone...
What's On this week Outspoken in Maleny
During the almost 15 years
since I took on the job of editor of Glasshouse Country News, I have written about plenty of highly anticipated official openings. However, I have to say that I am not sure if there has ever been an event that has had as long a lead time and discussion about than the opening in Peachester on the weekend. The Peachester History Committee has been collecting for and planning its new Heritage Centre, located behind the Peachester Hall, for the past 20 years. The official opening was clearly a really exciting milestone and significant achievement to have finally turned their dream into a reality. The celebrations were combined with those to mark the Peachester Hall’s 130 year anniversary. It seemed really fitting to create a special place to acknowledge and keep the town’s history right beside the building that has hosted so many of the area's important events and activities for more than a century. Congratulations to the members of the Peachester History Committee on all their hard work and thanks for reminding the rest of us how important it is for us to retain our community memories. Regards,

Local News Maleny Youth Festival this Friday By Sonia Clark The annual Maleny Youth Festival is back for its sixth year, with the fun filled youth-oriented event on this Friday, November 1 at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, from 3-9pm. Proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and Boab Dreaming Solutions, this year’s festival will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Maleny Flexi School. Event organiser Lyndal Regent said that students at the Maleny Flexi School had once again been instrumental in developing the festival theme, concept and direction. The event will feature bands and local musicians, stalls, food and fun interactive youth workshops. The festival theme chosen for this year was the eye-catching Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). While she acknowledged that popular imagery used in the traditional Mexican celebration permeates youth culture, it was the deeper meaning of remembering and honouring all that has gone before, all that is and all that will be that exemplified this year’s celebration.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to recognise former students, staff and volunteers who have been involved with the Maleny Flexi School over the past 20 years, and to acknowledge their incredible contribution to its success,” Lyndal said. The entertainment line-up will feature a strong youth focus as well as workshops, stalls and heaps of tastebud tingling food vendors. Performances include live entertainment from Sammalen, Eithnee, Heartspace Dance Company, The Undecided, The Fence Sitters, Lineage, Nordic Flux and more. Crowd favourite, Rob Longstaff, will headline and the event promises to be an eclectic and entertaining showcase of the creative talents of young people in our community. The steering group tasked to advocate on behalf of the community for the best result on the controversial rail overpass plans at Landsborough met again last week. Landsborough Overpass Reference Committee (LORC) chairperson Tim Fitzpatrick, from Landsborough Chemist, said the committee was pushing forward. “We have been working with ideas the community has submitted about what they believe the overpass should look like and where it should be located,” Mr Fitzpatrick said. The ideas are being collated into a portfolio and the committee will assess the strengths and weaknesses of each proposal. "To synthesise a way forward we must balance the needs of all the residents, business owners, the environment and our town’s heritage," Mr Fitzpatrick said. “Our goal is to then present this portfolio to the Landsborough community at a public forum in the new year." Once the committee has established the best option from the community’s perspective, this will be presented to the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade project team (B2N project) and the State Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey. State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has been supportive of the process from the start. “It is assuring to see this community take the reins

Mary Cairncross magic explored A stunningly illustrated new book, ‘The Magic of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve – a celebration of art and nature’, will be launched this Saturday. Beautifully depicting the flora, fauna and fungi of the one of the last remaining intact remnant rainforest of the Blackall Range area, the book is a compelling celebration of the beauty, complexity and fascinating diversity of the reserve. Published by Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Inc in association with Sunshine Coast Council, this new hard-cover compilation was the brainchild of renowned local scientist, naturalist and artist Dr Les Hall AM who retired to Maleny in 2011. Inspired by the success of the previously published ‘Birds of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve’, Les realised that there was a bigger and richer story to be told about the whole nature of the reserve and its fascinating layers of inter-connectedness and complexity. Tapping into the abundance of extraordinary local artists and drawing upon the expertise of local biologists, under Les’s vision the book skilfully weaves together a rich tapestry of original artwork and scientific insight.
Rather than photographs this unique book is beautifully illustrated with more than 120 original artworks of watercolour, acrylic, oils and carvings. It features 16 renowned local artists and 11 scientists who have all generously donated their time and contributions, and all profits from the book sales will support further projects that benefit the Mary Cairncross Reserve. Sadly, Les died at the beginning of this year but the release of the book will provide a lasting legacy that lays testament to his two favourite passions – nature and art. Professor Tim Flannery describes the book as "science by stealth" as it takes the reader "on a journey of the reserve through the eyes of the region’s finest artists, scientists, naturalists and storytellers", enticing them with pretty pictures that invite them to read more about the subject. Featured artists include Jinibara Elder Noel Blair, Gubbi Gubbi Elder Lyndon Davis and awardwinning artists Peta Boyce, Jim Cox, Sally Elmer, Peter Hudson and Michael Oberhofer, as well as several artworks by editor Les Hall. Friends president Sue Morgan said that she had been overwhelmed with the contributors’ generosity.

BioBlitz finalist in sustainability awards
Millie, Clancy and Rae Hall with the new book “This book is truly extraordinary, not because of the exquisite artworks but because of the passion for nature that brought it all together,” Sue said. The book will no doubt prove popular for tourists, locals and nature lovers alike and will be available from the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Discovery Centre, Rosetta Books and other local bookstores and visitor information centres. An official book launch featuring displays of original artworks of many of the contributing artists will be held at 2pm this Saturday, November 2 at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Discovery Centre. Artists will also be available to sign copies at the launch. If you would like to attend please RSVP to FriendsofMCX@gmail.com. The exhibition is on from November 2-7 and is open to the public.
Caring for the Hinterland community for over 20 yrs
In an Australian first, Sunshine Coast Council’s Mary Cairncross BioBlitz saw scientists, artists, traditional owners and volunteers hoisted up into the rainforest’s canopy to conduct biodiversity conservation research. Recognising this unique take on a bioblitz initiative, which is usually conducted at ground level, the Banksia Foundation recently recognised the Mary Cairncross BioBlitz as a finalist in its annual Banksia Sustainability Awards. While the vertical surveying activity was definitely unique, council’s BioBlitz also strongly aligned with the United Nation’s sustainable development goals. Over the four-day program earlier this year in March, 13 scientists across seven taxonomic groups surveyed species found from the understorey to emergent canopy of five strangler fig trees. Six artists undertook creative research, developing visual responses to the emerging biodiversity data, and Jinibara traditional owners shared their knowledge and perspectives with the survey team and community. More than 250 people participated in programmed activities, including bat detective walks, pademelon population surveys, botanical printmaking and a number of other public engagement opportunities, all aimed at raising the community’s appreciation for the reserve’s biodiversity values. Cr Jenny McKay said the winners of the Banksia Sustainability Awards, regarded as the most prestigious and longest running in Australia, would be announced on December 3.

To coincide with this year’s Remembrance Day, Maleny Arts Council and Musical Theatre Australia will bring the remarkable play with music - ‘A Girl’s Guide to World War’ - to Maleny. Garnering rave reviews and sell-out performances, the show will feature two performances at the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday and Sunday, November 9-10. GC&M News caught up with one of the stars of the show and Maleny resident Susie French. Q: Tell us a little about your musical theatre background? A: I started my professional theatrical career over 30 years ago in Brisbane. Interestingly, my very first show for the Queensland Theatre Company (QTC) saw me working alongside Margery Forde, who is also a fellow cast member in this current production. I worked for QTC and other companies in Brisbane for about ten years before a Simon Gallagher (Essgee Melodies) production of ‘Pirates of Penzance’ took me interstate and I eventually settled in Melbourne. I then went on to touring musicals nationally with shows like 'The Secret Garden', 'The Sound of Music', 'Menopause the Musical' and 'Mamma Mia'. Q: What drew you to Maleny? After nearly 20 years of touring musicals, I decided to give up the business of touring to concentrate on parenting my two beautiful daughters, Lucy and Heather. I also gained qualifications in music and theatre,
Q: This production is based on the true story of a handful of courageous Australian women who try to join the army during World War I. What do you think of performing the show close to Remembrance Day? A: I think it’s apt that Katy and Aleathea have timed this season so close to Remembrance Day as people will be thinking about their loved ones who fought, worked and who maybe even lost their lives due to the wars. Everyone knows someone who has been affected. In my case, my great grandfather fought in the First World War. He kept a diary that he wrote in in the trenches and many years ago I had the honour of reading it. It was a tiny book, leather bound with the tiniest of writing, all in pencil - there was no mention of hardships, fear or death. Additionally, my mother was living in London during the first bombings of World War II. She doesn’t talk about the bombings apart from to say that she was once blown off her bike riding home from school. I hope that this play opens a dialogue in families.
Head to the Maleny Community Centre for one of the two performances on Saturday, November 9 at 7pm and on Sunday, November 10 at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased online at www.malenyartscouncil.com or in person at the Maleny Information Centre in Maple Street. For group bookings of 10 or more phone John Marsden on 5494 2584.

which now enable me to teach. As fate would have it, I brought my girls to Maleny for a weekend holiday about 2½ years ago, mainly to visit some good friends. On the drive home, my daughters and I decided to move here. Three months after that drive home, we found ourselves living not far from the main street of Maleny, such was the pull of these beautiful mountains and good friends. I had spent quite a bit of time in Maleny in my 20s when I was touring in education theatre plays, which were then funded by the Queensland Arts Council. I was amazed by how grounded and generally happy the children were in the schools we played to here and I always thought it would be a great place to raise a family. It’s funny how life plays itself out. Q: How did you come to be involved with this production? Creators Katy Forde and Aleathea Monsour approached me about playing the role of Lillian Cooper about two years ago. I was fascinated by the story and really excited about playing the role of a female surgeon in a same-sex relationship in 1916. The prejudices and obstacles these women faced must have been enormous. I mean, they had to fight a damn sight more than men just to get accepted into the army. This was before they even got to do their jobs, and they risked their lives doing it.

Community News Turning cane toads against themselves A mere 100 adult cane toads were let loose 80 years ago. Today hundreds of millions of the poisonous toads now occupy millions of square kilometres of Australia and the task of reducing their numbers seems almost impossible. For many years, the only option for reducing cane toad numbers has been the hand capture of adults – or toad busting. However, a recent discovery by University of Queensland (UQ) scientists may tip the balance in our favour. Researchers found that cane toad tadpoles are drawn to a chemical attractant released by toad eggs, from which a pheromone-based bait has been developed by UQ scientists. This bait can be used to attract the ‘toad-poles’ into a trap, removing thousands of next generation toads in one easy step. To coordinate the trapping efforts, a program called the Cane Toad Challenge (CTC) has been developed that aims to fast track the roll out of cane toad tadpole trapping across Queensland and beyond. Mooloolah River Landcare (MRL), an affiliate member of UQ’s CTC, provides a pick-up location for the baits referred to as BufoTabs. The baits are provided free of charge and MRL produces ready-made traps, or can show you how to construct your own from basic materials. “Our interest in the CTC began when volunteers at the MRL nursery noticed that cane toads had entered and bred in their frog pond,” MRL coordinator Karen
Schmidt said. “A trap was constructed and a BufoTab placed in it. Over the next week, the trap consistently caught more than 1,000 tadpoles each day. “Within a few minutes you can see the tadpoles swim towards, congregate around and swim into the trap.” MRL wants to promote and roll out the CTC program comprehensively across the Sunshine Coast to help knock back the numbers of these invasive pests and give our native species a chance to re-inhabit their waterbodies again. The BufoTab is highly selective for toad tadpoles and does not attract frog tadpoles. The trapping method also allows for retrieval of non-target species that incidentally enter the trap before it is emptied. Once trapped, toad tadpoles are easily collected, humanely euthanised and disposed of safely. “While we understand that the method won’t eradicate cane toads altogether, tadpole trapping reduces cane toad tadpole numbers and disrupts the breeding cycles of local populations, alleviating the environmental impact of this toxic invasive pest,” Karen said. If you would like to reduce cane toad numbers in your pond, creek or waterbody to give native species a fighting chance, drop into Mooloolah River Landcare Nursery at 2670 Steve Irwin Way (Holcim site) in Glenview, during the nursery opening hours (MondayWednesday, 8am-4pm and Saturday 9am–1pm) to pick up baits and traps.
Lee Cleland photography on display Maleny Library will host a display of Lee Cleland's photographic art throughout next month from November 1-28. Lee moved to Maleny two years ago and immediately felt a connection to Obi Obi Creek. She is a landscape and nature photographer who likes to create images with a feeling for the essence of a place. The wall inside the library displays large canvases of peaceful moments walking along Obi Obi Creek. In a foyer cabinet are smaller images printed on a variety of surfaces - wood, canvas, acrylic - with each surface intended to show and enhance her photographs in a different way.

Does weather and crime have a connection?
Police are appealing to homeowners on the Sunshine Coast to ensure their house and property are secure after a number of recent break and enters. As the weather starts to warm, people tend to get more relaxed with home security and leave things open to keep the house cool while out participating in outdoor activities. So when you are out and about enjoying the warmer climate, don’t forget to lock your house. Police often see offences where an opportunistic offender has taken advantage of unsecured doors and windows, which is why they are urging people to make sure their properties are properly secured. As summer approaches, you are also reminded not to make security compromises for your pets. Do not leave you garage doors up for the cat to come and go during the night and don’t leave the screen door ajar for your dog. By ensuring doors and windows are locked even when you’re at home - and by keeping sought-after items such as phones, jewellery, wallets and cameras out of sight, each member of the community can help prevent opportunistic thieves from stealing. Forming relationships with neighbours can play a big role in preventing offences. You and your neighbours can keep an eye on each other’s houses when you are home, when you are out and perhaps even when you are on holiday.
Council funding goes to local community groups Sunshine Coast Council last week announced the community groups and organisations that would receive a slice of the $576,552 heritage levy and community grants pie. The community grants program allows organisations to access funds to deliver services, projects and events and buy much needed equipment. The heritage grants come from a pool of money collected through the heritage levy applied to council rates. Heritage levy grants enable not-for-profit heritage and museum groups to care for and exhibit their heritage collections and put on events relating to their heritage interest. In Glasshouse Country and the Blackall Range region 17 applications were successful, totalling $87,972 or just over 15% of the total funds allocated across the Sunshine Coast. Successful projects include: • Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed $2,600 – a leather work sewing machine • Old Witta School Community Centre $5,249 – replacement ride-on mower • endED $1,800 – paddock to plate, normalising eating via an organic farming project • Montville Chamber of Commerce $3,000 – 2019 Montville festive tree lighting event • Maleny and District Men’s Shed $7,500 – erection of stage two of ex-army long shed • Glasshouse Country Community Group $4,953 – storage cupboards, PA system and projector • Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club $5,000 – Maleny Settlers Green shelter for interpretive panels
• Maleny and District Horse and Pony Club $7,500 – equestrian day yards • Arts Connect $7,000 – 2020 Open Studios Sunshine Coast • Range Community Kindergarten $4,500 – expansion of bush tucker garden • Peachester History Committee $7,420 – interactive media displays • Peachester History Committee $5,500 – new exhibitions for Peachester Heritage Centre • Peachester History Committee $4,950 – to rewire Jim Hall whittling collection • Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club $6,216 – equipment to support players and volunteers • Landsborough and District Historical Society $3,784 – eHive database and cataloguing system • Glass House Mountains Community Hall $2,000 – conservation of World War I honour board • Friends of Pattemore House $4,500 – Pattemore's at Prayer Unfortunately, a number of local groups missed out on funding for some important projects. Maleny State High School P&C unsuccessfully applied for assistance in replacing the sprung floor in the community centre at the school. The Mooloolah Public Hall Association failed in an attempt to fund repainting of the hall. The poor drainage at the Landsborough Sports Complex will continue to be a problem with the Landsborough Cricket Club not receiving any grant funding. The Friends of Pattemore House were unsuccessful in a bid to fund a project for creating and installing the interpretive panels for the Maleny Settlers Green area.

Deanne conquers Blackall 100 The Blackall 100 trail run was a raging success this year, with a record number of entrants – around 620 – and record times. Organised by Glass House Mountains locals Brett and Megan Standring from Run Queensland (and Crookneck Retreat), the internationally regarded ultra-marathon continues to attract quality runners from around Australia as well as from overseas. Three of the four winners in the 50km and 100km main events came from the Sunshine Coast, which shows the depth of talent and dedication among local runners. Brett said Deanne Sinanovic was an example of how locals have conquered not just the the Blackall 100, but also their own personal barriers. Deanne is the daughter of Ron and Alison Horne from Landsborough Pool Supplies and she shared her story with us. “So I did it, I ran an ultramarathon! My first ultra and my first 100km and I enjoyed every minute,” Deanne said. “They say you can learn a lot about yourself when you run long distances. I’ve learnt I can do anything I put my mind to, and that hard work and persistence pays off. “I faced some major fears out there, ran through storms that seemed like they went on for ages, ran all by myself in the dark in the middle of nowhere ... I realised I

can’t control the weather and the scary possum in the last leg was more scared of me. “I’m still scared of storms and the dark but it didn’t kill me and I’m one step closer to not being afraid. “I learnt that after 60km my knees do not like running or walking, or hobbling down hills. “I learnt how much fun it is to run in torrential rain through puddles. “I realise now just how many people around me support me no matter what crazy ass ideas I have. “So happy with the time I did 17 hours 53 minutes when I was aiming for a sub 20 hours. Can’t wait till the next one.” Brett may be dog-tired but he’s still full of enthusiasm for next year. “Thank you to absolutely everyone - from runners to supporters to volunteers to sponsors - for making 2019 such an unforgettable event," Brett said. “This event will go down in Blackall race lore as one to remember. “We are already looking forward to doing it all again next year so save the date … Blackall 2020, October 17.”
Powell celebrates decade of representing Glass House
LNP Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has marked ten years in the job with a local celebration. Family, friends, staff, volunteers and supporters gathered in Beerwah recently to mark the significant milestone, which Mr Powell described as a special occasion for him and his family. “It was wonderful to celebrate ten years as Member for Glass House with so many people who’ve supported me along the way,” Mr Powell said. “These days, ten years in politics is an extraordinary amount of time, especially in a marginal seat like Glass House. “Members of Parliament come and go, seats are won and lost and boundary redistributions can eradicate seats altogether. “To have successfully contested four elections is an incredible privilege and honour.” The celebrations are set to continue as Mr Powell will host four free community barbeques across the electorate including two in the Glasshouse Country and Maleny area between 5-6pm on Monday, November 4 in Tesch Park, Maleny and Thursday, November 21 at Settler’s Rotary Park, Glass House Mountains. “There is no need to RSVP – just rock up," Mr Powell said. “I look forward to seeing as many familiar faces and meeting as many new faces as possible and hearing their concerns and thoughts about Glass House and Queensland."

Glass House Mountains calendar on sale The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains 2020 Calendar has been printed and looks great. It is now available to purchase for just $7.50 at various outlets including Matilda Fruit Barn as well as the newsagencies at Beerwah, Glass House, Landsborough and Mooloolah. Each year the calendar photos are chosen from a photo competition run by Rotary and always feature artistic images of our Glass House Mountains. The calendars make excellent Christmas gifts to send interstate and overseas friends to show off our beautiful region. The other great thing about the project is that the proceeds from the calendar sales go towards supporting community projects. Become a volunteer at Sunshine Coast Libraries
More than 1,500 dedicated volunteers participate in Sunshine Coast Council’s volunteer program. These people contribute their valuable time and skills across many different areas of the organisation, including libraries. With the help of volunteers, council can deliver much needed services and programs to the Sunshine Coast community. For individuals, volunteering provides an opportunity to be involved in activities reflecting their personal interests and skills, while building a stronger, more connected community. It’s thanks to our volunteers that Sunshine Coast Libraries can offer the following services: • Family history volunteers help customers use our family history resources (available at Caloundra, Maroochydore and Nambour only). • Friends of the Library volunteers form an important link between the library and the community. They raise funds and advocate for the library. • Home library volunteers ensure house-bound members still receive their loans on a regular basis. • Literacy volunteers help community members develop their reading and writing skills. • Readers’ group volunteers help our members continue to enjoy reading when their independence is temporarily or permanently limited (available at Beerwah, Caloundra, Maroochydore and Nambour only). • Tech help volunteers help customers with all things computer and tech related. We currently need more tech help volunteers at Maleny Library, so if you’re interested please get in touch with staff at the library. To register your interest to become a volunteer visit our website at library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Services/Volunteer and a staff member will contact you. To find out what’s free at your local library visit our website or subscribe to the library eNews to stay up-to-date.

Cup Calcutta raising money for those in need Maleny charity organisation Smart Living Society Limited is getting into the Melbourne Cup spirit to raise funds to help the charity meet its goal to build a much-needed community village for those at risk of becoming or who are homeless. Smart Living Society’s Melbourne Cup Calcutta will take place this weekend on Sunday, November 3, from 4pm at Hotel Maleny, with tickets in the raffle now on sale. For those unfamiliar with a Calcutta sweep, it’s a fun way to get into the punting spirit for the race that stops a nation. To get involved you will need to buy a ticket in the raffle at the beginning of the fundraising event. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase on the day or can be prepurchased at Hotel Maleny for $2 each. The raffle will be drawn on Sunday at 4pm. Winning ticket holders can then purchase their horse at the Calcutta auction or sell their ticket to another buyer, keeping 50% of the sale money. The other 50% is distributed to the total prize pool and Smart Living Society Limited. Horse 'owners' then have the chance to win in the race's prize pool, which is already over $3,600 thanks to the generous donations of sponsors. First prize for the 'owner' of the cup’s winning horse will receive 60% of the prize pool, second prize will be 20%, third prize is 15% and the 'owner' of the last horse will take home 5% of the prize pool. The society's goal is to work towards creating a village community to house individuals and families who are suffering from rent stress or who are homeless. This fundraiser will help to cover the ongoing costs incurred in running the charity’s operations. After being alarmed at the number of people classified as homeless in Australia’s 2016 census (116,427), Smart Living Society was formed and began working on a solution to the crisis. In July 2018, the society was granted full charitable status and, as a registered Public Benevolent Institution, direct donations are tax deductible. Regular public or institutional donations are quarantined in the project’s trust account and can only be used to develop the village project. Charity spokesperson Richard Townsend said Smart Living Society’s vision was to create secure, self-sustaining, affordable rental housing and create positive and lasting change in people’s lives, lessening the burden on the welfare system. “Through research, members of Smart Living Society identified a severe shortage in affordable rental housing in Maleny,” he said. “As a result, we found some of our most vulnerable community members are being forced away from their long established social and support networks.” As well as attending the Melbourne Cup Calcutta on Sunday afternoon, Richard said there were a number of ways the public could help support Smart Living Society. “People can get involved with us and become a member, or assist by providing expertise to their team, or even by contributing a tax deductable donation,” he said. To find out more about the great work the local charity does, or how you can get involved, visit the website www.smartlivingsocietylimited.org, email admin@smartlivingsocietylimited.org or follow the Facebook page for updates @SmartLivingSocietyLimited. And, of course, come along to enjoy a fun afternoon with the Calcutta charity event at Hotel Maleny, Sunday, November 3 for 4pm start.

Glasshouse Mountains Probus Contributed by Norma McCormack The club has shared the fun and fellowship of Probus over the past month with our monthly meeting, eating out, an outing on the water and a barbeque, all of which were great but it is the other ‘f’ in our motto, friendship, that is the key to our happy club. Every get together is a chance to catch up with old friends as well as meeting new ones with the joy of finding what you have in common. Each meeting is a chance to share what is happening in our families since many of us have grandchildren and, believe it or not, great grandchildren. It is also a time to learn about who has been travelling where and share their experiences, some even enjoy the pictures! Every person in the club has a story and our greatest pleasure is sharing those stories. Your story would be of interest to us, so join us and when you feel comfortable with the group, share it.

Locals and visitors to Maleny last week may have noticed the arrival of CHASM’s small house to its new home in the Maleny Co-op’s community garden. After several years of hard work the dream is now becoming a whole lot more real.
Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Group
Following the group's highly successful seminar in Maleny to introduce local Indigenous elders from the Jinibara traditional custodians, the Shared History Seminar series continues with the next free event at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, 1 Bicentenary Lane, Maleny on Wednesday, November 13 from 10am-12noon. At the first meeting in the Community Centre in September, elders from the Jinibara First Nations people met with Maleny locals and were greeted with enthusiasm and goodwill, with everyone expressing the desire to continue the discussion by meeting again. The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre generously donated a meeting room to facilitate the November event. Fiona McGill will talk generally about Indigenous culture and explain some aspects of Australia that you might not know. Uncle Noel Blair will continue the friendly chat followed by a free morning tea. The people of Maleny have shown a great deal of interest in Indigenous matters, including local identity Aunty Bev Hand’s cultural walks, the annual Bunya Dreaming Festival and the Maleny Remembrance Ceremony. Uncle Noel has been involved with the Mary Cairncross Biosphere Project and Woodfordia’s Indigenous programs. There is much to learn about our country’s past. The group anticipates an ongoing discussion with another event planned for early next year to examine recent history in the Blackall Range and the devastating impact of white settlement on the Jinibara people. 20
CHASM is keen to thank everyone who has helped them achieve this significant milestone and GC&M News will bring you a story about how the project will progress in the November 6 edition.
Are you like Jules from V8 Supercuts in Beerwah and already have your Christmas Tree up? Or are you busy planning a community Christmas event or idea? Beerwah business home to the largest range of aquatic plants If you’re a lover of water gardens and tropical plants, it’s likely you would have come across many of the beautiful locally grown plants from Beerwah wholesaler, Suncoast Water Gardens. What was once a small nursery specialising in propagating water lilies, lotus and a variety of tropical plants, has grown into a very successful business, supplying to a number of independent and large retail stores across Australia. Suncoast Water Gardens began operation in 1993 at a property in Chevallum but quickly outgrew the premises – twice – before settling on a six-acre property in Beerwah, with three acres solely dedicated to the nursery. Well respected locals and industry legends, Paul Lancaster and Margaret Vita, purchased the business in 2005 and with their hard work and determination, not to mention their passion for all things green, helped grow the business to become one of the country’s leading suppliers of aquatic plants and water lilies.
Paul and Margaret’s stunning and wide range of plants have been featured at numerous gardening expos throughout Queensland, even featuring on the popular ABC television program, Gardening Australia, with Jerry Coleby Williams. Their range of plants include Australian natives, edible, oxygenators, submersible aquatic plants, as well as a large variety of water lilies, lotus plants and tropical plants, to name a few. They are also collectors of the rare and the unusual, and the quality of their plants has made them well respected within industry groups and a sought-after supplier for nurseries. Paul, Margaret and the team at Suncoast Water Gardens are passionate about growing beautiful plants and supply to nurseries as far north as Cairns, west to Emerald and south to Melbourne. They also supply to Bunnings stores throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales. Locally, you can find their plants at Mooloolah Produce and Stock Feed, Mitre 10 Maleny, Sunray Nursery Nambour, Rosemount Nursery, iLandscape Sunshine Coast, Buderim Landscape Centre and Manawee Garden Centre at Buderim. Suncoast Water Gardens are members of a number of associations, including the Nursery and Garden Industry Queensland, Australian New Guinea Fishes Association and the International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society. They feature at many trade expos throughout the year including the Queensland Garden Expo, held every year in Nambour, the Brisbane Garden and Plant Expo and the Brisbane Plant Collectors Fair.
Business feature sponsored by Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce
Home to the largest range of aquatic plants and water lilies in the country, Suncoast Water Gardens pride themselves on being one of the most unique niche wholesale nurseries in Australia. Their skill and experience in growing their harvests ensure that gardeners receive quality plants that will enhance the natural beauty of their surroundings. If you are a gardener you know our local conditions will prove perfect for plants from Suncoast Water Gardens as they are grown right here in Beerwah. If you are interested in learning more about the beautiful locally grown plants or where you can purchase them, you can visit their website, www.suncoastaustralia.com or www.suncoasttropicals.com.au. Sunshine Water Gardens are a wholesale tropical and aquatic plant supplier based out of Beerwah and are not open to the general public. Nursery visits are strictly by appointment only, and you can contact them via email at sales@suncoastaustralia.com.

From the churches A person, a nation, a world without hope cannot flourish. Hopelessness drains the life out of everything. It is darkness, gloom, loss of vitality and soul-sorrow. When we do not have hope, we lose the desire to live, love and create. The writer of Ecclesiastes says this: “Meaningless! Meaningless! ... Everything is utterly meaningless!â€? Viktor Frankl, a survivor of the German concentration camps of World War II and father of logotherapy (a form of psychotherapy), watched as some prisoners in these camps laid down, giving up, and died. Yet others survived through the most horrific circumstances. What made the difference? This was the core message in his book 'Man’s Search for Meaning'. â€œâ€Ś to live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in suffering,â€? Frankl wrote. He quoted Friedrich Nietzsche: “He who has a why to live can bear with almost any howâ€?. It stands to reason that if we have meaning in our lives, we can cope with the suffering that is part of being human. What gives you and I meaning? I do not mean entertainment or pleasure but what makes our lives

Rev Costa Stathakis Glasshouse Country Uniting Church meaningful? The old gospel preachers said: “We are saved to serve. So, let’s look at these two words. Saved - From a Christian perspective we are saved from hopelessness. Jesus said these telling words: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33) The light will not be extinguished by darkness. Death is not the end. Hate and violence will end and people will learn how to love. To serve - Nothing takes away our sense of hopelessness as becoming a positive in someone else’s life! Precious Makwala was given the shocking diagnosis of AIDS. Her life was shattered but then Precious looked around and saw the suffering of others in worse conditions. She spent her days going from shack to shack tending the ill, feeding and cleaning them. Her hopelessness was gone, she had found the love of God, hope for the future and the joy of helping others. Her life now had meaning. DQ $XVWUDOLDQ &KULVWLDQ &KXUFK

Vanda will give a presentation at the event, where you can learn all about the amazing work being done across South East Queensland, how you can get involved and what you can do to help these incredible (and very cute) marsupials. CVA will provide a morning tea and will give away free koala food trees for people to plant in their gardens. This free event is open to the whole family, so grab your kids and bring them along to this exciting and educational morning. Ms Hall said. In particular, she hopes the work will assist in the fight to protect the southern cassowary and the coastal emu, which are endangered species. “There are only 40-100 coastal emus in central and northern New South Wales, so this technique could help build a robust captive insurance population to later return to improved areas of wild habitat,” Ms Hall said. “Conservation management requires strategy to maximise the sustainability of the population. In captivity, the recommended ratio for cassowary is one female to two males so she can select her mate, so the goal is to ethically hatch a desired sex.” Ms Hall said her work stemmed from a passion for Australia ratites (large, flightless birds) that have been walking this planet for about 60 million years. “We are really happy with how it’s going. It’s something I have been thinking about for years so it’s nice to do some formal trials.”

Make your dream to visit Africa a reality
By Sonia Clark The allure of Africa is timeless. Boasting a wilderness experience like no other, for many people an African safari holiday is a long-held dream that sits at the top of their bucket list. Offering unparalleled experiences and unforgettable memories, Africa is an extraordinarily beautiful continent deeply rich in culture, natural beauty and unique wildlife. The Infinite Horizon is a local family-run business that specialises in guided safari-style travel adventures. Owners Steve and Teena Chumbley are passionate about encouraging others to experience the beauty and wonder of Africa, and can make that long-held dream to travel to Africa a surprisingly affordable reality. Steve has worked in the African safari business since 1992. The couple lived and worked in Tanzania for over 20 years and have owned their safari business since 2005. They draw on their
extensive personal knowledge, local connections and networks to provide all-inclusive itineraries. Clients who join their safari tours or embark on a tailor-made African adventure holiday, can do so with the peace of mind that they are dealing with an operator based locally at Glenview with extensive knowledge of the suppliers, agencies and customs of the country they are planning to visit. Teena said they were excited to share some new updates, including the launch of a brand new website and news that bookings are now open for a 13-day Great Migration and Island Escape Tanzania tour departing February 2020. “Tanzania is often thought of as the quintessential safari destination and rightly so," Teena said. "The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro are all household names for good reason. With such incredible geographical diversity, once you experience Tanzania it will remain in your heart forever.”
Boasting the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, the largest natural migration and the biggest game reserve (the Selous), Tanzania also has the world’s longest, deepest and cleanest equatorial lake (Lake Tanganyika) and an estimated one third of the world’s lions. There is a diverse culture, from the sophisticated Zanzibar architecture to the nomadic Maasai and the last of the world’s hunter-gathers (the Hadzabe). The Great Migration and Island Escape tour is a classic safari suitable for all ages. It has been created to include the best wildlife destinations. At $10,300 per person twin share it includes all accommodation, all meals, all internal flights and transfers, private guide, 4WD safari vehicle and all park and entry fees. Teena said itineraries could be tailor-made to best suit the time of year, personal interests and budgets of clients, with the option to include additional activities or add-ons such as entering the 2020 Kilimanjaro Marathon (a bucket list favourite), visiting neighbouring Rwanda for gorilla trekking or Ethiopia for a unique ethnic experience. You Said It Environment concern
An estimated 300,000 in Australia attended a protest on September 20 to speak loudly about their concern for the environment, climate change and government inaction on the issue. I am proud to have attended our local rally at Maroochydore alongside other concerned Sunshine Coast citizens. I have had concerns for the environment for over 20 years and now, as a mother, I feel that I am obligated to elevate the issue and participate in these events to gain media and political attention. We have all been taking individual action for decades (recycling, installing solar panels and water tanks, composting and reducing plastic use) but this is not enough if our government cannot implement sustainable energy policies and continues to support short-sighted polluting big business. If you are worried about climate change too, I urge you to consider writing to your local MP or participating in a local protest. Kim Jones Mooloolah Valley
Excellent night
Congratulations to the organising committee for the Beerwah Street Party on Friday, October 18. It was an excellent night with a great atmosphere. Also a big wrap to the cleaning staff. I drove through Simpson Street at 5.30am on the Saturday morning after the event and the street was spotless. You wouldn't realise such a great event had been held the night before unless you had known otherwise. Well done to everyone involved. Justin Rummery Beerburrum
Re: Another mine causing concern
Jon Woodlands (GC&MNews, October 9) reminds us that uranium mining involves hazards but I believe the hazards are manageable given adequate government supervision. Unfortunately, uranium mining is involved in nuclear weaponry and I am much more concerned with the problems of nuclear arsenals than with mining. The human race really is at risk when Trump and Putin each control 6,000 nuclear weapons and there are seven other countries in the nuclear club, including Israel, North Korea, Pakistan and India. The consequences of global nuclear war are terrible to contemplate but so too are the longterm consequences of climate change. The results (destruction of industrial civilisation and most of the seven billion people that depend on it) are much the same. However, a nuclear catastrophe needs some desperate humans and may not happen but a climate catastrophe just needs us to keep on with business as usual. The notion that industrial civilisation may collapse may sound ridiculous but I base this on the slow but inexorable rise in sea level. In the past, most climate projections stop at 2100 with a sea level rise of about 0.5-0.8m but the real problems start after that. The latest IPCC report on ocean and cryosphere projects sea levels out to 2300 with a rise of 3.7m given a business as usual scenario. Others have projected 4.6m. They calculate this would mobilise a few hundred million people living on coastal flood plains, many of them to our north. How will Australia respond if we were freaked out by a few tens of thousands of boat people? If coupled with a 9.5 degree Celsius rise in temperature humans will be in a mess that apocalyptic novelists can barely imagine. David Lowry Conondale 28

Re: Our roads are dangerous
How pertinent of Cr Rick Baberowski to air his views on pathways and missing links in Your Say in GC&M News (October 16 edition). This is a subject that I am also passionate about. I believe it is a citizen’s responsibility to ensure the safety of the community’s most precious possession, its children. My concern is the lack of safe egress for children living on the southern side of Peachester Road to access the Beerwah State School. Conversely the children living north of the same road to safely access the Glasshouse Christian College and Beerwah State High School. The children wishing to do this safely at the moment are required to go to the centre of town and use the crossing lights at the corner of Simpson Street and Peachester Road. This is an absurd situation and a pedestrian crossing should be provided immediately at either the intersection of Nicholls Avenue or Roberts Road with Peachester Road. I was stunned when recently a map of the proposed new interaction of Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road arrived in the mail. The map showed no provision for children to access the school through the traffic lights from the south east. Yes there is a steep drop off to the creek on that corner but our illustrious council has the money to construct boardwalks along the dunes for tourists and locals so walkers can walk from Diamond Head (Golden Beach) to Point Cartwright and beyond through Coolum to the end of the shire, yet not make provision for this missing link here in Beerwah. Could Cr Baberowski please inform the Beerwah community on what date during the construction of the Peachester-Old Gympie Road intersection that our council will commence the boardwalk connecting Roberts Road to the school intersection. Please could Cr Baberowski justify through this medium why we as residents of Beerwah are required to pay a $45 per year levy to the council for transport? Or is it to pay the transport for the mayor's overseas jaunts? R Houston Beerwah
Re: Our roads are dangerous
Thank you to Scott Wilson (GC&M News, October 23) for highlighting Cr Baberowski being quick to blame the state government for the condition of our roads when instead Cr Baberowski should be ensuring that council is fixing our roads so we can travel around safely. Mr Wilson also raised concerns about the garden being installed at the Page Street Park in Glass House Mountains - the park no one can see or easily access. This is not an isolated case of council garden insanity. Have you seen the gardens council has installed either side of Old Gympie and Peachester roads? More money wasted as the state government has confirmed this intersection will be receiving lights in the New Year, meaning those same gardens, which have just been created, will soon be ripped up. Two significant issues have therefore been raised about how council makes decisions to spend our money and our councillor's ability to make sure council is working with other levels of government to get things done in a timely and efficient manner. Redacted front page
I opened the GC&M News (October 23) somewhat apprehensively, wondering if I would find a page almost completely redacted as in many of the daily newspapers on the Monday (October 21). My fears were unfounded. We elect our politicians and pay them a generous

salary in recognition of their onerous and difficult job. I don't think that gives them the licence to keep secrets. I presume when information is withheld because of national security that means a politician or the government has acted incompetently or reprehensibly and doesn't want anyone to know. I look forward to the time when a politician, when asked a question, whether the answer is favourable or unfavourable to themselves, can answer, “Yes”, or “No.” Ian Pollock Witta
To dam or not to dam
Andrew Powell's recent letter (GC&M News, October 16) suggesting that Queensland could do with more dams may be controversial but it has nevertheless sparked an important debate. The population is growing here, partly because of still substantial immigration numbers and a continuing internal migration out of Sydney and Melbourne to South East Queensland. We live in a dry continent and the question needs to be raised, how many people can this place sustain? Regarding dams, I would like to thank Andrew Powell and the LNP in their role in opposing the Traveston Dam a decade ago, that would have submerged significant parts of the Mary Valley. Brent Hampstead drew reference to this in his letter (October 23). At the time the Queensland Labor government was prepared to threaten the extinction of the wonderful Mary River turtle and lose much good quality farmland for an ill-thought through project that few wanted. I've seen the Mary River turtle at close range here at Cambroon. They are a beautiful animal and a large turtle, with the adults growing to a length of 40cm or more. I have no doubt the drought will pass and many may be surprised by the amount of inundation and flooding likely to come, which may be sooner rather than later. It has all happened before. When the first white fella explorers traversed the Murray River in the early 1830s, they were very disappointed in its poorly state. They hoped to find promise for agriculture and settlements, instead the river barely flowed in places as it was a drought time. Decades later there were paddle steamers, orchards and dairy farms. Who knows what the future may hold, but as disquieting as it might be for some, it could be a positive one. Jon Woodlands Cambroon
Sincere thanks
I want to once again give a glowing testimony about Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH). I recently sent in a letter saying how good the hospital is in all departments. Since then I have suffered a mini stroke that necessitated hospitalisation, and once again I really feel I must thank the doctors, nursing staff, catering staff, wardies, physiotherapists and social workers and really everyone connected with the hospital. The care was of the highest standard and follow-up great! This hospital is a really top-notch institution but only because of the personnel who work there and daily go to great lengths to help, comfort and genuinely care about the patients. Students doing their training there will come out as even better, caring human beings. God bless you all at SCUH. Thanks also to the ambos who transported me there so quickly. The origin of Halloween
You may not know that Halloween is more than 3000 years old. The Celts of the British Isles, Ireland and Europe celebrated a three-day New Year festival called Samhain from November 1. They believed
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
that during this time the spirits of their ancestors came back from their version of Heaven called the Otherworld. Because they believed that the soul resides in the head, they collected and revered the heads of respected family and enemies too. The heads were preserved and during Samhain a burning candle inside each head guided the spirits back. When Christianity arrived, many of the Celts converted to this new religion but kept many of their old traditions including Samhain. The church leaders fitted this old ceremony into the Christian calendar but changed its name to All Hallow’s Eve, which eventually was changed to Halloween. We still carve a face into an empty pumpkin and burn a candle inside, and we still dress up as ghouls and ghosts to mimic the spirits coming back to visit. Warming is like cancer
Liberal, Labor, Nationals, Greens, Independents, One Nation - no matter how you vote, a scientifically diagnosed cancer will affect you the same. You may choose different treatments for it (and some won't work) but the cancer's existence and progression is not changed by your political beliefs. So too with the warming of the planet and its climate changing effects. I feel that some voters feel trapped by their political beliefs into taking a stance that they might otherwise not take. There is agreement by 98% of expert scientists that human activity is creating our worsening climate. Please don't confuse your approach to economic matters, whether you are an employer or employee, with what is happening with
our climate. There are still plenty of commentators happy to tell you that there is no problem but like cancer progressing, the planet continues to warm. Together we need to work urgently on effective treatments. Wendy Hodgins North Maleny
Re: Climate change
Susan Pollock’s letter in GC&M News (October 23) makes a very good point about the climate change debate. Arguing about climate change serves no useful purpose. It is a very complex subject and it is hard for most people to fully understand the science. It is even harder for us to imagine the rapid changes that are required to fix the apparent catastrophic situation that may be facing future generations. It is now time to move on. Let us focus on the future and embrace new technologies! The good news is that renewable energy is now cheaper and less polluting than combustible sources of energy. It also provides lots of worthwhile employment. Electrification of transport and hydrogen production will reduce Australia’s reliance on oil imports. That is a very important economic and strategic benefit. The amazing standard of living that has been created by our exploitation of fossil fuels will continue with the use of renewable sources of energy. “When one door closes, another one opens” will continue to be a source of hope for those who face an uncertain future as the energy revolution takes place. History is full of such examples, a prime example being the loss of jobs in the farrier business when mechanised transport took over from the horse and cart.
Humans can adapt very quickly to changing circumstances. World War II is a horrible but good example of that. The enormous effort on both sides, albeit with a huge waste of life and resources, demonstrates the capacity that humans have to tackle challenges head on. Even if you are not convinced, it just makes commonsense to reduce carbon dioxide emissions just in case the science is correct. Politicians should note that future generations will judge you harshly if you continue to act irresponsibly. “No good wishing that you had insured the house once it has burned down.” Gavin Jack Landsborough

The popular musical ‘Into The Woods Jr’ will take to the stage at Glenview State School on Wednesday and Thursday nights, October 30-31 from 6.30pm. Glenview has long had a reputation as one of the premier music schools in our region and events like this are not to be missed. Beginning with pre-show entertainment from junior and senior dance troupes and choirs, along with the student rock band Occupy and solo artists, the main musical production will finish the night. Tickets are $10 each and are now on sale by calling 5439 6777. Dinner will be available from 5.15pm, provided by the local masters of Thai food - Muang Thai at Mooloolah.
Principal gets on his bike
When it comes to fighting childhood cancer, Benjamin Gaske, principal of Landsborough State School, is at the frontline by taking part in the annual Great Cycle Challenge. Benjamin will ride more than 1,000km during the month of October to raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Great Cycle Challenge encourages cyclists across Australia to challenge themselves and set their personal riding goal throughout October to fight kids’ cancer. Riders fundraise to save lives and give kids the brighter future they deserve. Landsborough State School students have been supporting their principal by riding their bikes on the school oval during lunchtimes and making donations to the cause. Benjamin said the response had been amazing and that he was proud of the students. "So far, I have well exceeded my fundraising goal of $1,000 and the tally is rising every day," he said.
Principal Benjamin Gaske with students riding their bikes during school lunchtime “I believe that no child should have to go through cancer and I’m taking part in this challenge to make sure that happens. Kids should be living life, not fighting for life.” In just six years the Great Cycle Challenge has become one of the biggest cycling events in Australia. It supports research into prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer. To learn more about Benjamin Gaske and the ride or to donate visit www.greatcyclechallenge.com.au/riders/BenGaske.

Business feature
Lots on and activities galore Glass House Early Education Centre has been a hive of activity lately with a number of special events and activities keeping both the children and staff busy, including fundraising activities, special guest visitors and new updates on centre initiatives. With the plight of farmers suffering drought conditions, particularly those in Western Queensland, highlighted in the media and through community groups, centre coordinator Dee Shaw said that the children and staff were keen to contribute to local relief programs. On Friday, October 18, a special drought relief fundraising day was held at the centre with the children enthusiastically supporting the cause. “It was lovely to see the children so keen to help others when we hosted our farmers’ day,” Dee said. “It was a great effort where we raised $60 for the Drought Angels.” A new centre initiative - the pre-school postcard exchange - got off to a flying start with the kindergarten children thrilled to have already received postcards from other centres in England
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
and Ireland. This exciting initiative has the children learning the process of writing and posting postcards to new friends overseas and seeks to expand the children’s focus to include a wider community perspective. As part of the new kindergarten initiative, the children have been exploring a giant world map investigating where their new postcard exchange friends live. “It’s been very exciting for our children to be in contact with other children overseas and it’s a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our world and our place in it and wider community connections,” Dee said. Another initiative in the pipeline has been to finalise a new swimming instruction program for the centre. Dee said that the program details had now been finalised with the swimming program set to start in the first term in January 2020. “We are really pleased to be able to offer this water safety program in 2020,” Dee said. “In the meantime, the swimming instructors will visit our centre to begin educating and familiarising the children with the program and water safety for when they begin lessons next year.” The team at Glass House Early Education Centre were also delighted to have a visit from the Healthy Cooking Company’s dietitian Susannah Ayre. Susannah came to present an interactive workshop on healthy lunchbox choices, where the kindergarten children learned about different food groups and the types of food that make a great, healthy lunch for big school as they transition into prep next year. The workshop proved interesting and informative and Susannah taught the children about the
five core food groups that make up a healthy lunchbox - vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy and meat/alternatives. As part of the session, each child received a lunchbox for prep next year, as well as a recipe book filled with yummy nutritious lunchbox friendly meals and a checklist for parents. The children also had the chance to play a game and fill their lunchbox with pictures of nutritious lunchbox friendly foods. The healthy lunchbox workshop is just one of many examples of the way Glass House Early Education Centre supports children’s health and wellbeing. As part of this commitment, the centre provides a daily menu of wholesome ageappropriate food prepared by the Healthy Cooking Company to encourage young children (and their families) to eat well. Best of all for parents, these wholesome food options are all included in the daily fees. For an obligation free tour of the centre, or even to just ask a few questions, please call 5438 7311, or call in to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

Health Check Caring for your mental health With Kelly Sweeting
Esprit Psychology opened its doors in Beerwah in August 2016, and since that time we have been working with individuals, couples and families to help achieve meaningful and worthwhile lives. As a psychologist, I have experience in a wide range of problems including depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, addiction, relationship counselling, trauma, complex mental health conditions and work place difficulties. I use various evidence-based interventions to support my clients and mainly use cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and solution focus brief therapy. The philosophy of Esprit Psychology is to encourage the people who we work with to learn and understand the problem in-hand and allow then to identify their own goals. The journey starts with finding out what the problem is and then finding the best way for the individual to address the problem. The skills that people learn in sessions are not only useful in the present but hopefully will be useful in the future. I work with individuals from 12 year olds to older adults. If you receive a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, your sessions will be bulk billed. Alternatively you can book an appointment privately. If you require further information or would like to book an appointment, please give us a call or send an email.

Health &Beauty Stepping into technology Ankle and foot pain can be debilitating and something that podiatrist Jason Roberts from Stepping Out Podiatry sees daily in the clinic. Jason said that it was a podiatrist's job to properly examine the foot and ankle to determine the underlying cause of any pain and why it had occurred. Diagnosis of injuries and pain is where Jason’s expertise lies, which is why he is excited about introducing motion detection innersoles into his treatment. “It’s fantastic to be in this space where we can use technology to help us confirm our client’s diagnosis and give them peace of mind that we are on the right track for rehabilitating their injuries," Jason said.
Acupuncture
“These smart innersoles are placed in your shoes and after a short walk, it feeds back information about your stride length, heel strike, what your feet do in mid-stance and also on toe propulsion” This gives Jason information about any differences in the feet and can confirm a diagnosis so a rehabilitation pathway can be started. This technology is provided with all foot and leg assessments at no extra cost. Step away from foot and ankle pain and into one of Stepping Out Podiatry’s clinics today. Phone 1300 881 082 for appointments at all five clinic locations across the Sunshine Coast.

Scoff all your sweets at once this Halloween to slash the risk of harming those fangs - that's the advice of the Australian Dental Association for the nation’s sweetie-chompers. “It may come as a surprise to hear a dentist say this but if you have your sweets in the one sitting or over just one day, then the sugar isn’t continuing to hang around in your mouth, causing more opportunities for decay,” ADA president Dr Carmelo Bonanno said. ADA’s other top tips for minimising the harm of sugary indulgences are: 1. Eat sugary treats with meals as the saliva produced to help digest larger quantities of food can also cleanse and buffer the mouth pH from acids caused by food and drink. 2. Go for chocolate over candy. It leaves less residue and contains the protein casein, which creates a protective film over the tooth’s enamel surface reducing the risk of decay. 3. Dark chocolate is better than milk as the sugar content is slightly lower. The dark variety also contains polyphenols, which fight oral bacteria and neutralise organisms that cause bad breath, flavonoids, to slow tooth decay, and antioxidants, which help fight gum disease. 4. Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva. 5. Rinse your mouth with water after eating anything sugary to help neutralise acid attacks. 6. Consume your Halloween party soft drink with a straw so the liquid goes straight to the back of the throat, bypassing the teeth. 7. When shopping for trick or treat goodies, opt for candy or lollies that aren’t sticky and don’t sit in clumps in back molar teeth. Sticky sweets are more difficult to remove and linger longer. 8. Brush teeth twice a day and floss daily – whatever the date. Don’t let your or your children’s poor Halloween habits haunt your family for years to come. Observe these tips so your mouth doesn’t become a casualty of these fun celebrations.

An Unexpected Love
What is love? This eternal question (and others) is explored in the film 'An Unexpected Love'. A longmarried couple, Ana and Ricardo - played by two of Latin cinema's most beloved stars, Mercedes Moran and Ricardo Darin - are forced to examine their attitudes to their relationship when their only son leaves home to study in Spain. Their main reason for staying together, their son, is gone and now they question what will hold them together for the next 30 years. What do they really want from life? The film has been described as a "slow-burning comedy of observation". It's more sophisticated and insightful than others of this genre, deftly avoiding stereotypes and cheap laughs in its exploration of real human interaction. This empty-nesters rom-com is sure to resonate with audience members over 40 - even if they choose to handle the situation quite differently! 'An Unexpected Love' has met with great success in its home country of Argentina, where it was the second biggest-selling home-grown film of 2018. In the Garden Jobs for the yard in November Once your spring flowering bulbs such as jonquils and daffodils have died down, lift out the bulbs, clean off the dirt and store them in a dry, dark place. • Propagate daylilies from any plantlets that have developed along the flower stalks. Just plant them into a pot with quality potting mix and wait for them to grow. • Recent rains and warm temperatures will see a big increase in grasshopper and caterpillar numbers in the garden. Pick them off and squash them, or use a pyrethrum or bacteria-based spray. • Time to prune your azaleas to shape and to dead-head roses to encourage continual flowering. • Zucchinis may be showing powdery mildew (a fungal disease) on their leaves. Spray with Mancozeb or try the one part milk to ten parts water technique. • Keep an eye out for bronze orange bugs on your citrus. Knock them off and squash them or spray with Yates Nature’s Way citrus and ornamental spray. • Fruit flies will start to appear. Keep them at bay by cleaning up old, rotten fruits and using a splash bait, such as Eco-Naturalure. • Prune back your grevilleas by a third to promote bushiness. • It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Keep spraying your developing mangoes with Mancozeb to prevent the disease anthracnose.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Brenda Briese Once again our game on Saturday, October 19 was washed out by the storm at midday. Thursday, October 24 was a stableford with 58 ladies in two divisions. Division one winner was Lea Garner on 35 points from Cheryl Jepson on 34. Division two winner was Pam Marsden 37 points on a count back from Lyn Steele 37. NTPs: 2 – Monica Duff, 5 – Cathy Stone, 16 – Cece Proud, 18 – (second shot) Cindy Godfrey. BRDs went to 32 points. The course is looking lovely and green again after the recent welcome rain. Visitors are always welcome, either in our competitions or just a social round.
Lea Garner, Lyn Steele and Cheryl Jepson
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails welcomed Maroochydore TTs on a nice sunny but slightly windy day. The games were hard fought but Witta Wagtails came away the winners. Congratulations Wagtails. This was the Wagtail’s last home game of the season and we celebrated with an enjoyable lunch afterwards. Thanks to Cynthia Garvie, Sonia Douglas and a special thanks to Jill Murtagh and Pauline Fraley for filling in on the day. The Wildcats took on the second top team in Yandina and were able to come away with
Witta Wompoos
an eight sets to love win. Stacey English lead the way with her fantastic serving and slice dropshots. Jenie Riding was on fire at the net and Annie Stewart was able to produce some amazing lobs under pressure. Libby Howlett put her body on the line with a spectacular dive and roll on the court to win the point. A great day of tennis, good sportsmanship and lots of laughs were had by all. Whistlers played at Witta against Caloundra Raquettes. Warm with only a little breeze, it was a perfect day for tennis. We all had good rallies in all our sets and we enjoyed the day with a good win. Score was 48-10 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper and welcome back to the team Maree Hooley. After an heroic start Witta Wompoos gallantly played some exciting tennis during the finals match against Nambour No Worries at the Nambour Showgrounds last Sunday, October 27. Close sets were the order of the day with four tie breakers played. Unfortunately, they all went the opposition's way. At the end of the day only eight games separated the two teams but the sets count was 9-3. Congratulations to the triumphant Nambour team but Witta will still be there next season to contest the battle. Well done to Donna Kuskopf played brilliantly all day to be man of the match. Thanks also to our Witta supporters, Great to see you all there. Until next year. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm. All welcome. Court bookings 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.
Contributed by Graeme Glover It was a busy week at the bowls club last week and a big well done to all the regular volunteers who catered and organised the teams and games on Tuesday. It was really appreciated by our visitors and locals. Wednesday night saw our rinks filled. What a great turnout - 14 teams for this season is a record and kept our caterers and games organisers very busy. Well done to Miles Allen for his spontaneous rearranged schedule to fit everyone into a team. Friday saw a great turnout and some new faces. Everyone is welcome to come and try and stay on for the members' draw. The handicapper has Jim King, Dave Edwards and Don Ginns in his sights. Next week will include a report on our Monday pairs, which has a full field. Well done to all our members for getting their names up on the board. Jim Weidman has been keeping everyone in our district well informed about the upcoming plum pudding day. Thank you one and all for a very positive response to help make that day a success. Visitors to the club regularly comment on the quality of the green and gardens. This, like every feature of the club, is done by volunteers. Thank you to those people and a reminder to all how, as a club, we are trying a roster system to take advantage of the collective skill set of every level of membership. Thanks in advance in making this work through your commitment as a club user.

Easy Find Classifieds Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker In two games of association, using first colours, Bev Sockhill and Sally Adams took Gillian Bradley to a four-all draw. On the same lawn Nick Cram showed fine form in a sparkling finish to his game against Ken Barker to record a 13-6 win. An approaching storm called an abrupt end to proceedings in these games. Wallace Roy and Vince Carbery played Sarah Widin and Donna Manning to a 12-all draw while Ken beat Kath Smith 26-10. Several members of our club attended the funeral of Bill Bray in Nambour on Tuesday. Bill was 98 when he died, having been a fine member of his community and club. I have met many fundamentally decent people in my time playing croquet but none more so than Bill. Vale. Playing times have Bill Bray in his changed for summer. Just for Laughs I’ve created a monster!
Mother knows best
Last year my daughter and her children were invited to a Halloween party. Her older son wanted to go as Count Dracula, her daughter as a ballerina and her younger son as the cabin boy in 'Treasure Island'. Then my daughter donned her own costume, wrapping herself in strips of white sheeting. At the party she collapsed, exhausted, on the sofa. “And who are you?” someone asked her. “I’m a tired mummy,” she said.

Week Beginning 30/10/2019
For Halloween, my grandson wanted to be the Incredible Hulk. Using food colouring and a washcloth, my daughter dyed his hands, face, neck and blonde hair the green shade of the cartoon monster. After his bath, a faint green tint still remained the next morning. As my grandson was going out the door to school, he handed his mother a slip of paper he had forgotten to give her earlier - school pictures were going to be taken that day.

Andrew recently sold the family home for us and we found him to be excellent. He was always professional and helpful, and got back to us quickly whenever we had questions or if something needed to be followed up. Andrew also had a good understanding of the local market and took the time to understand the value of our property to assist us with the sale process.

Andrew went above and beyond in delivering exceptional customer service during the entire sale process. Being a deceased estate meant there were some difficulties and Andrew provided his expertise to guide us through. We obtained an excellent price and a great outcome for all involved. Andrew also assisted with many tasks that I would not expect of a real estate agent - Andrew is a man of integrity and honour and I would highly recommend him.

During our first meeting Andrew explained the costs and process of selling both of our properties thoroughly and kept us up to date throughout the sale. His emails and phone calls during the negotiations were very much appreciated. Andrew was very skilful in the way he handled the selling of both properties together. His positive, calm and honest personality left us in no doubt that he was looking after our affairs at all times. We can’t thank Andrew enough.

Andrew was attentive and supportive throughout the process of purchasing this property. I am very happy to recommend him to buyers and sellers as he knows the area very well and he is certainly invested in his clients.
