Hi Everyone...
Well, you may have noticed this week we have a new look masthead on the front page and we have made some style and colour changes to the way the paper is presented, but for those Queensland supporters, don’t panic – we haven’t changed allegiance to New South Wales. With the new style we are using, the colour of the masthead will change each week, and it definitely won’t be blue in a State of Origin week! The change in our masthead is also to reinforce what we do each week – which is bring you, the readers, the news from our area, keeping you as up-to-date as possible with what has happened in the last week, what is happening this week, next week and sometimes in the coming months and years across our communities! And while we can’t always report on every event, every change and everyone’s opinion on every topic, we definitely give it our best shot and work hard to bring it all together in this easy-to-read format to keep you informed about your town, and the local area. We appreciate the regular feedback we receive from people who look forward to seeing the paper arrive at their home Regards, each week and look forward to seeing what we have included.

nbn lodges more development applications On Wednesday nbn lodged Development Applications for an additional 12 Fixed Wireless broadband tower sites across the hinterland. The 12 facilities are intended to deliver an nbn Fixed Wireless service to 9,000 homes and businesses in parts of Balmoral Ridge, Beerburrum, Conondale, Glass House Mountains, Image Flat, Kulangoor, Kureelpa, Maleny, Peachester, Valdora, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs. They come on top of the 24 towers already in service across the Sunshine Coast, and the seven facilities that have completed planning approvals and are awaiting construction start. Senior Corporate Affairs Manager Kylie Lindsay said the lodgement of Development Applications with Council was a great step forward in the nbn rollout in the region. “This is exciting news for local residents and businesses as the region moves closer to being able to connect to the nbn and access fast broadband services,” she said. “With the nbn, local residents and businesses will have access to a network which is both fast and reliable; something that has been desperately needed in the region for many years.” Ms Lindsay said nbn will continue to work constructively with the community and council to deliver broadband to the region. “We have already undertaken proactive prelodgement community consultation for the

proposed facilities at Balmoral Ridge, Conondale, rural Maleny, Peachester and Verrierdale,” she said. “Over the next few months nbn will undertake further informal consultation with the remaining communities in which a Fixed Wireless facility is proposed to be constructed.” Currently more than 95,000 residents and businesses in parts of the Sunshine Coast are already able to connect to the nbn network using Fixed Wireless and Fixed Line technology. Many premises in the region are also eligible to connect to the nbn through the Sky Muster satellite service which has been available to regional and remote Australians since April 2016. Residents and businesses are urged to keep an eye in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for information regarding consultation in their areas, which will include community information sessions.

Fire ants hit Beerwah One of the world’s worst pests, red fire ants, has been found living in Beerwah – the first time an outbreak has been detected anywhere on the Sunshine Coast. As a result of a report from a resident to Biosecurity Queensland, the Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program inspectors searched the area late last week using fire ant detection dogs, uncovering a single nest site. Program Director Geoff Kent had praised the vigilant member of the public for their notification which led Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) to confirm the detection of one fire ant nest. “Biosecurity Queensland officers responded quickly and have been onsite investigating and taking ant specimens for identification,” Mr Kent said. “The fire ant nest was destroyed onsite by direct nest injection with insecticide, and they baited the area around the nest with an insect growth regulator to ensure that all ants in the colony are destroyed. “The field team will also inspect areas outside of the 1 km surveillance zone that have an increased risk of being infested due to habitat type or land use activities. “It is unknown at this stage how the fire ant nests arrived in Beerwah, however we are continuing with our investigations to determine the possible source of the infestation.” Mr Kent said BQ would be commencing community engagement activities to raise awareness for fire ants in the Beerwah area.
“The community should not be alarmed by seeing Biosecurity Queensland officers and fire ant dogs in their streets,” he said. “As fire ants have not been previously found on the Sunshine Coast, it is critical that the community help us to check every nook and cranny for fire ants and report any suspect sightings to Biosecurity Queensland.” Mr Kent urged residents and business operators in Beerwah to check their properties and work sites for fire ants and report any suspect sightings to BQ. Although BQ are not confirming the location of the outbreak, it appears that from footage of the detection dogs in action, and comments made via various social media posts, the outbreak could be located within the Coochin Twins estate on the western side of Beerwah. Fire ants are listed as one of the world's most invasive species, and in Queensland are classified as a ‘restricted matter category 1’ – the highest pest threat level. Fire ants have been present in Brisbane and surrounds since being detected in 2001, with eradication programs ongoing ever since. If they establish permanently in Queensland they are a serious threat to our outdoors way of life, and have serious health and environmental impacts. Everyday activities, such as barbecues, picnics and sporting events may no longer be possible in high infestation areas. Fire ants vary in size, between 2–6 mm, are coppery-brown with a dark abdomen, inflict a painful sting and are aggressive.

Reesville property gets sustainable makeover Living more sustainably these days isn’t just a fuzzy catchphrase, it’s achievable if you have some understanding of simple holistic land management practices. Scott Robinson knows this all too well. He runs a local business called Polyculture Sustainability Services and has been helping families and landowners live, farm and look after their property and animals in a more sustainable way for over 25 years. Out at Reesville, Polyculture is partnering with the O’Meara family to turn their sixty acre old dairying farm into a super productive sustainable and eco friendly farming enterprise. Cyndi O’Meara is the well known nutritionist, author, educator and founder of ‘Changing Habits’, a holistic health and wellbeing approach which emphasises the importance of high quality ethical and nutritious foods. Training in Permaculture, holistic land management and nutrition farming, Scott and his team bring together traditional farming pursuits, modern farming practices, science based approaches and intuitive land management to encompass a whole of property system. “The approach we take revolves around providing people with sustainable solutions for any sized property, from unit patios, urban backyards, to rural properties and community precincts,” Scott said. “Polyculture systems work because they are simple to implement, minimise maintenance and mimic nature!” Scott, who lives with his family on a sustainable

property at Glenview, is excited by the opportunity to help people improve their land management practices, soil, productivity, local environment and personal wellbeing. “Starting almost from scratch here at Changing Habits Farm, we’ve planted over 400 food trees – mostly native bush tucker species with a lot more to come. We’re using cattle in cell grazing techniques that enhance the soil while storing carbon where it should be and improving the pastures, it's like in situ composting, while integrating animal management methods to minimise pests and disease and to revitalise the nutrient capacity of the soil and so the resilience and productivity of the property overall. “This is nothing new. It’s just using traditional farming techniques, while incorporating modern scientific knowledge and understanding how soils, water, plants and animals can all gain maximum productivity using the same space.

In mid April the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce asked for residents’ experience with our telecommunication providers, mainly Telstra. Glasshouse Country & Maleny News published a survey form and exactly 110 people responded. The questions we asked were regarding mobile phone reception and internet speed, availability and reliability. Most responses were from Glass House Mountains and it seems that the entire location is affected by the lack of service from providers, both for mobile phones and internet. Beerwah was next with areas along Old Gympie Road, Shaws Road and, most disturbingly, the newly released subdivision being the most affected. Landsborough and Mooloolah Valley seem to be faring better and only 20 people responded. Some responses came from as far as Maleny, Reesville, Balmoral Ridge and Montville. We have now forwarded the results to Andrew Wallace MP and hope that he can put pressure on Telstra to upgrade/expand the network, even with the NBN on our doorstep. We are all paying for a service that we are not getting. At our last Chamber Meeting our guest speaker was Judy Tomlinson from Celebrate Glasshouse Country about the upcoming Street Party to be held in Beerwah in October. Judy and her team are well on track to make this event even better than the last one, where over 8,000 people visited. To make this next event a success, Celebrate Glasshouse Country needs volunteers. So, if you have some spare time, please contact Judy at judy@celebrategc.com.au. Our next meeting will be held on July 18 at Club Glass House. We have a fantastic guest speaker giving us the latest from the tourism body ‘Visit Sunshine Coast’. We will invite the general public to this event. See the advertisement beside this column.

Uniting Church celebrates Contributed by Chris Bell
2017 is a special year for the Uniting Church in Australia. We mark 40 years since church union, when three denominations of the Christian Church – Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalists – united as a ‘Uniting Church’ on Sunday 22 June, 1977. The Uniting Church has maintained strong, principled positions on issues of justice and peace, notably the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers. The UnitingCare (formerly Blue Care) network is one of the largest providers of community services in Australia. We declare that we are a multicultural church and are working to give fuller expression to the richness of our culturally and linguistically diverse community.
On Sunday June 25 Glasshouse Country Uniting Church celebrated the 40th Anniversary with Rev Dr Peter Hall officiating (standing in for Pastor Margaret who was ill) with especially composed music, worship and balloons. Maisie Beitz, an ‘original’ pioneer of the Glasshouse Church congregation, told us that well before church union their church (which is now the Glasshouse Community Centre in Ryan Street, Glass House) was used alternatively by Presbyterians and Methodists, with Christians of other denominations also attending each week. Others in the congregation spoke of their memories of ‘Uniting Day’ and what the Uniting Church means to them today. The happy group is pictured at morning tea.

Artist Jan Bowmaker will be showcasing her work at Vianta Arts at Beerwah this month with her latest exhibition entitled ‘A tapas of art’. An emerging artist who works with acrylics, Jan currently divides her time between her home in Brisbane and her studio located in Wollombi in the Lower Hunter region of NSW. The new exhibition will have its opening night on Friday July 7 at the Simpson Street venue with an experience of music, dining and art from 6pm until 9pm. Her artistic journey has been inspired by travels throughout Australia and abroad, often looking for experiences and events that offer an interesting contrast to normal expectation. Her art has evolved from depicting simplistic landscapes to works that explore the intricacies of texture and colour enhanced by elements of mixed media which provide an additional depth to the visual aspect of her work. Since taking up the paintbrush, Jan has successfully exhibited her works at a number

Her work has also been featured at interstate art exhibitions in the Wollombi Valley, Cessnock Regional Art Gallery, Laguna School annual exhibition and other smaller regional galleries. Although classed as an emerging artist, Jan has been fortunate to be invited to fulfil several commissions for commercial and private residences, both in Australia and abroad. Over time her work has developed from simple photorealism landscapes to delving into the intrigue of abstracts. She strives to combine this conceptual work with the magic of colour and texture to enhance the visual aspect of her pieces and provide works that connects with the viewer. Volunteering Sunshine Coast recently launched the Volunteer Rewards Card to acknowledge and celebrate the 60,000 plus volunteers we have dedicating their time and services to the Sunshine Coast community. A key risk factor for depression is social isolation. Volunteering combats this through regular contact with others, it helps you to develop a solid support system assisting you during times of stress. People who volunteer have better mental health, suffer less chronic pain or heart disease, are happier, more optimistic and sleep well. Volunteering can also increase self-confidence, self-esteem and contribute to a general feeling of life satisfaction. It can connect people to new career paths and labour markets that are better paid and more stable by providing extensive training and job related experience. This is what volunteers have to say: “Working as a volunteer on website design, it’s implementation, newsletters and mail mergers has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge and experience in this field.” Joseph. “I am learning many new skills, including the broadening of my computer skills. I love working in this environment, the people are so supportive, there is an incredible feeling of comradery and respect amongst the volunteers.” Dawn. Volunteering is a healthy life choice. Businesses wanting to expand their network and take advantage of this new incentive program, non profit organisations that would like to utilised the Rewards Card or individuals looking to volunteer can contact Volunteering Sunshine Coast on 5443 8256 or email businessmanager@volunteeringsc. org.au. Volunteering Sunshine Coast works with community organisations across the Sunshine Coast to assist them in finding volunteers.

nbn™ network services on track for Sunshine Coast More than 95,000 premises across the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area are already able to take advantage of services over nbn’s™ Fixed Wireless and Fixed Line technologies. Since April last year, many Australians in regional and remote areas have been eligible to connect to retail services through nbn’s™ Sky Muster™ satellite service. As part of the rollout, nbn has already built 24 nbn™ Fixed Wireless facilities across the Sunshine Coast region, where 7,000 homes and businesses are eligible to connect to retail services over the nbn™ Fixed Wireless network. But there is more to be done. Over the next 18 months, nbn intends to deliver the fixed wireless services to an additional 9,000 properties across the Sunshine Coast, to make sure that rural and hinterland communities keep pace with their coastal neighbours and the rest of the country when it comes to access to fast and reliable broadband.

In addition to the 24 nbn™ Fixed Wireless facilities already in service, nbn has seven facilities that have completed planning approvals and are awaiting construction start. This week nbn has lodged Development Applications with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for a further 12 nbn™ Fixed Wireless facilities. These 12 facilities are intended to deliver a fixed wireless service to residents and businesses in parts of Balmoral Ridge, Beerburrum, Conondale, Glass House Mountains, Image Flat, Kulangoor, Kureelpa, Maleny, Peachester, Valdora, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs.
Consultation nbn has already conducted pre-lodgement community consultation for the proposed facilities at Balmoral Ridge, Conondale, rural Maleny, Peachester and Verrierdale. Over the next few months, nbn will undertake further informal consultation with the remaining communities in which an nbn™ Fixed Wireless facility is proposed to be constructed. Please keep an eye out for information regarding consultation in your community, which will include advertising in local newspapers, letter notifications and community information sessions.

About the nbn™ network The rollout of the nbn™ network is an upgrade to Australia’s landline phone and broadband network. Access to fast broadband is designed to provide a range of benefits, such as improved opportunities to work from home, better access to online education tools and more options for on-demand entertainment. Bush Food Bounty
With Spencer and Karen Shaw The bounty of this land is considerable and native food plants that are must haves for your backyard include: Midyim (Austromyrtus dulcis), a great low growing shrub/groundcover with attractive weeping foliage and tasty white berries, fresh from the bush – kids love them. Lillypillys (Syzygium spp.) are all edible (if you are hungry enough) but from our local ones the Riberry S. luehmannii is not only bountiful, but tastes good raw and even better glaced in a sugar syrup. Davidson Plums (Davidsonia spp.) although not strictly local, are spectacular foliage specimens with their large leaves and large beautiful looking plum-like fruit. They are a tad sour, but nothing that a few spoons of sugar can’t fix to make a great jam or syrup. Plum Pine (Podocarpus elatus) also produce a juicy, succulent, plum-like fruit with a pleasant pine taste and again is fantastic for jams and syrups. Finger Limes are a great local treat and now highly sought after the world over. We have the cultivar Rainforest Pearl now available as grafted plants ready to fruit in just a few seasons. Then there are the native mints, native celery, native parsnip, yam, scrambling lily, tamarinds, sour cherry, bunya pine and many, many more. Taste the real Australia and add local flavours to your diet with local native plants in your backyard.
Environment Forest Ecology Course on again Hinterland Bush Links will run the 2017 Subtropical Forests Ecology Course at Bellthorpe over two weekends in August-September. This four-day course is for anyone interested in our local ecology. Experts will guide you through the nature of the rocks and soils in the landscape, and why they support different vegetation types and wildlife communities. The course will equip landholders to restore bush and connect it to remnant habitat in the wider landscape. If you own or manage land for conservation, this course will give you a strong foundation for planning the best way to care for it. But it’s also for those who just love to get out in the bush. The course runs August 19-20 and September 2-3. If you would like an information pack, email Susie Duncan at wilderness@hotkey.net.au or phone 5429 6622.
Wildflowers love Do you love wildflowers? Come along to a special presentation at Beerwah Library with members of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland on Wednesday July 19 from 1pm to 2.30pm. As part of the celebration of 50 years of the Sunshine Coast Wildflower Festival, discover where to find wildflowers on the Sunshine Coast and learn about the conservation activities of local artist and writer Kathleen McArthur. View some of her paintings and prints of Queensland wildflowers during the afternoon discussion and find out how her work influenced the Sunshine Coast’s natural environment. This is a free event however bookings are essential on 5475 8989.
Barung Landcare Plant local native plants for native stingless bees
Your Local Native Plant Nursery

Most of us are aware of the importance of native bees: they pollinate our native plant species and have an important role in the pollination of many agricultural crops. With native bees under threat from land clearing, habitat destruction and pesticides, it makes sense to support local populations by planting our gardens with local, native bee-friendly species. Our friends at Native Plants Sunshine Coast advise to aim for a range of flower colours including blue, purple, white and yellow (bees have good colour vision) and a variety of flower shapes to suit different pollinators. Choose a sunny spot and plant in clusters to provide massed flowers for visiting bees. Plant in layers to provide a variety of heights, from trees down to ground level. An example of a planting to take all these factors into account may include trees – Eucalyptus, Acacia and Corymbia species; shrubs such as Pavetta australiensis with its perfumed white flowers; climbers and scramblers like the beautiful purple-flowered Native Sarsaparilla Hardenbergia violacea and Pandorea jasminoides; and low growers like Scaevola albida (fan flower). A shallow tray of water with pebbles in it provides a suitable wateringspot: bees have short legs and are not good swimmers! For more information on our local species, visit Native Plants Sunshine Coast’s website www.npqsuncoast.org and look out for their excellent colour brochure ‘Native Plants for Native Bees’. Get your bee-friendly plants from Barung Landcare’s nursery at 26 Porters Lane, North Maleny. Phone 5302 9900 or visit www.barunglandcare.org.au. Tax Time Taking care of business
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is encouraging small businesses to get organised at the beginning of the new financial year by taking care of business now. Assistant Commissioner Deborah Jenkins says that thousands of small businesses register every month, which means there are a lot of new business owners about to have their first tax time experience. “We understand that around 50% of small businesses come under financial pressure within the first year, and one of the biggest issues is cash flow,” she said. With this in mind, Ms Jenkins has five tips for small businesses to help them get a head start on the new year. 1. Stay informed There are a number of new measures that small businesses might be able to take advantage of this year. For example, the turnover threshold for a wide range of concessions has changed and there’s a lower company tax rate for small business. It is a good idea to work out if your circumstances have changed and see whether you can benefit from the measures before you get into tax time. The best way to keep up with what’s new for small business is to follow the Small Business Newsroom at ato.gov.au/sbnews. 2. Get on top of your records Good record keeping is essential for anyone in business because it makes it easier to manage your cash flow, meet your tax obligations and
understand how your business is doing. If you get your records together now, when it’s time to do your tax you’ll have all the information at hand and won’t need to go rummaging through a shoe box of paper receipts. You can use your records to compare yourself against the ATO’s small business benchmarks and check how your business is performing against similar businesses in the same industry. For more information and advice on good record keeping practice, visit ato.gov.au/ electronicrecordkeeping and to find out how competitive your business is, use the small business benchmarks, visit ato.gov.au/ businessbenchmarks. 3. Find ways to make it easier The ATO has a range of products and tools to make it easier for small businesses to stay on top of their tax and super obligations. For example, you can do most of your business reporting and transactions with the ATO online, so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the ATO website to see where you can save yourself time. If you are sole trader, you can lodge your returns using a registered tax agent or myTax. For the first time this year, sole traders can also use the myDeductions tool in the ATO app to keep track of your business expenses. From 1 July 2017, goods and services tax (GST) reporting on the business activity statement (BAS) will be easier with Simpler BAS. Small businesses will be required to report less GST information, which will reduce the complexity of bookkeeping
and reporting, saving you time and money. To find out more, visit ato.gov.au/simplerbas. 4. Look after your employees If you have staff, it’s important that you do the right thing by them by making sure you meet your deadlines for your employer obligations, including their payment summaries and superannuation guarantee payments. You need to issue payment summaries to employees by July 14 and you need to lodge your PAYG withholding payment summary annual report to the ATO by August 14. You should also make sure you know if your workers are employees or contractors because this can affect your obligations. There is a decision tool available online to help you get it right at ato.gov.au/ecinfo. 5. Know where to get help Around 95% of small businesses use a registered tax professional to lodge their returns, so it’s likely that your agent will be your first point of call. You can also call the ATO and speak with someone over the phone because we’re here to help. We’ve trained more than 4,000 staff to be able to assist small business owners who are dealing with difficult circumstances, including those who are managing mental health issues. If you have a debt that you can’t pay on time, you might even be able to organise a payment plan online. For more information, visit ato.gov. au/debt or to find out about how the ATO can help, visit ato.gov.au/sbsupport.
TALKING TAX How do I lodge my tax return? Most taxpayers go to an accountant to ensure the return is prepared correctly and that the maximum is claimed to ensure that the best possible tax refund is issued from the ATO. The ATO is checking more information than ever before, please make sure all receipts/invoices are kept and all log books completed accurately. When is my tax return due for lodgement? - If you visited a registered tax agent last year you will be on their ATO lodgement list. In most cases you will have an extension period to lodge your 2016/17 tax return. Lodgement should be by March 18, 2018. - If this is the first time using an agent, please visit us by the 31st October to ensure you can be added to our ATO lodgement list to receive the additional time to lodge. - If you lodge your own return, the ATO must receive the return by the 31st October. What should I bring to my appointment? • You should bring your Payment Summaries; • The amount of Interest earned from banks on any savings during the year; • Dividend Statements, buy/sell details of shares or land and buildings; • Any receipts/invoices for work related expenses. • Fees for the Preparation of last years’ return; • Rental Property Income & Expenses incurred during the year;
• Donations made to charities (this does not include ticket purchases) or school building funds; • Income Protection Insurance amounts paid during the year. • Please bring in phone bills, electricity accounts, etc to appointments. Remember it is better to have more information than not and we can go through this to ensure correct claims will be made. Motor Vehicle Claim – Bulky Work Tools Can only be claimed where ALL of the following conditions are satisfied: - The equipment is required for the employee to carry our their duties on that day - It must be essential to transport the equipment to and from work (not just personal choice or convenience) - The equipment is sufficiently bulky and/or heavy making it impractical to transport other than by own vehicle - There is no reasonably secure storage area provided by the employer. The ATO are phoning employers and checking this. Self Education Costs Expenses will not be deductible if the course is designed to enable you to obtain new employment or start up a new income-earning activity. Superannuation Employer Super Contributions are 9.5% for the 2018 financial year.
The concessional contributions cap is $25,000 for all age groups for 2017/18. (This includes the 9.5%SG, salary sacrifice amounts, member contributions). I employ staff what should I do at the end of June? - Ensure you provide your employees with their Payment Summary. You have until the 14th August to provide the ATO with the Annual PAYG Payment Summary Statement. - Check your classification with Workcover Qld to ensure that the staff wages are allocated correctly. - Minimum Wages increase from the pay period that starts on the 1st July. You need to check your employee’s minimum entitlements to make sure you’re meeting your obligations – even if you’re covered by an agreement or pay above the award wages. You can check with fairwork.gov.au to check the A-Z Modern Awards to ensure you are meeting your obligations. At the Fairwork website you can also check on Minimum working conditions, Apprentices & Trainees, Notice Periods, Holiday & Leave calculation. - Make sure your software is up to date with the latest tax tables. Building & Construction Industry The “Taxable Payments Annual Report” is due at the ATO by the 28th August if you lodge your BAS on a quarterly basis.

Tax Time Taking time to get your tax right Tax time is once again upon us and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers to take their time to get it right. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said 2.8 million people lodged their tax return in July last year, which is 22% of all tax returns lodged for 2015-16. “We know that some taxpayers like to get in early and lodge in the first month of tax time, but our analysis shows that if you lodge in July, you’re far more likely to make a mistake by leaving out some of your income,” Ms Anderson said. “By mid-August we have pre-filled most of the data
from employers, banks, government agencies and other third parties. Waiting until this information is available will help you avoid mistakes. Ms Anderson said taxpayers don’t need to get into a rush to lodge their tax returns early. “It’s great to see taxpayers eager to finalise their returns, but it’s your responsibility to make sure you declare all your income. This includes income from any cash jobs, the sharing economy, your second job, foreign sources, employee share schemes and capital gains from the disposal of shares and property.” “Our systems are great at finding errors in tax
returns, and if we have to investigate something further in your tax return.” Ms Anderson said people can choose to lodge using the ATO’s online lodgment tool, myTax, which is fast, easy and secure, or they can lodge with a registered tax agent. If you have been using the myDeductions tool, which is available in the ATO app, to save and store your deductions, you can upload that data as well without the need for physical receipts. For more information on how to lodge, visit ato.gov. au/lodgeonline and to find out about myDeductions, visit ato.gov.au/mydeductions.
Get ready for the new financial year Whether you work for an employer or yourself, 30 June is a great time to review your budget and ensure you’re financially fit for the new financial year.
Tips for salaried staff
Now’s the time to start making sure your tax records are in order. You won’t receive your group certificate until after the end of the financial year, but check you have receipts for all allowable tax deductions. That way, you can ensure you are claiming all eligible work-related expenses. If you own an investment property it’s likely that you will be able to claim interest payable on the mortgage, as well as depreciation and other expenses. The
end of the tax year is the time to ensure your records of these costs are accurate. If you have other borrowings, review your debts and consolidate them if appropriate. Ensure you can still meet the repayments. It might also be an opportunity to review whether you have the capacity to make additional voluntary contributions to your super fund to help reduce your taxable income and bump up your retirement savings. The concessional superannuation cap will drop to $25,000 per year for everyone from 1 July. At the moment, it’s $30,000 for people younger than 50, and $35,000 for people older than 50. So if your circumstances allow, it might be an
idea to contribute up to your limit to take advantage of the more favourable rules now in place. It can be an idea to talk to an accountant or financial adviser about making extra contributions to your super fund.
Working for yourself
Like employed people, this includes ensuring you have kept accurate records of your income and expenses, and identified your allowable tax deductions. There are a number of government incentives available for small businesses at the moment, including the $20,000 instant asset write-off program. If you are planning on investing in assets like technology, office fixtures or
anything else you need to run a thriving business, it may be an idea to bring the expense into the current financial year to generate a tax write-off. Talk to your accountant about taking advantage of this and other government incentives available for people who work for themselves.

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast A change in Transport Strategy Some readers of last week’s GC&M News may be understandably upset at Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to cease funding for the Beerwah to Landsborough bus trial, especially given the increase in the Transport Levy. This is not a decision targeted at Beerwah or Landsborough. Council is not funding any bus routes at all across the Sunshine Coast in 2017/2018. Route 891 to Peachester is only continuing because that trial was successful and the route is now being paid for by TransLink (the State Government). The State is responsible for delivering public transport across Queensland, and the only transport services council is currently funding are the FlexiLink and Council Link services for people with mobility or access issues. Over the past few years, instead of directly providing trials for bus services, council has shifted to putting the majority of the Transport Levy money into a Transport Futures Fund. All of the increase is going into that fund as well. The goal is to build up enough money over a number of years that we can make a major contribution to building light rail between the Hinterland, Caloundra and Maroochydore. We have become increasingly convinced that such a project won’t happen without council leadership, and we are also increasingly sure that without major transport investment by the State Government, including light rail, there is a transport crisis coming to the region. Our roads are already choking, and the State Government requires us to absorb 200,000 new residents over the next few decades. We need rail as an alternative to take traffic off the roads. The contribution of light rail will be fundamental towards achieving a sustainable transport network, because if we don't the road network will have failures. As for the Beerwah-Landsborough service itself, it originally commenced in 2010 as a trial to inform TransLink whether there was sufficient demand to justify a permanent service. It didn’t come close to meeting TransLink’s usage requirements, and frequently ran empty buses. I argued to have the trial extended twice from 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 to see if anything changed with the growth of Beerwah. Unfortunately numbers did not rise and TransLink has declined to provide a permanent service. Of course, TransLink continues to offer 28 rail services each way, per weekday between Beerwah and Landsborough, and 10-14 on weekends. Ultimately, I understand it may not be popular in the short term to deliver fewer services now so we can do something transformative in future, and I’m prepared to take some criticism for that. Given the state of our transport network and the increasing pressure on it, I don’t see there is any real choice. Our lifestyle is at stake and the delivery of rail is essential. Transport Levy The route #892 bus service Landsborough to Beerwah is gone! The story by Greg Brown in last week’s issue of GC&M News was a good summary of the service that has been lost due to the decision of Sunshine Coast Council. On the subject of the transport levy: I note it was $20pa in July 2012 to July 2015, then jumped to $27 last year and for 2017 has increased to $42pa, more than doubling in two years! My estimate is that there must be over 2,000 ratepayers in Beerwah, so Sunshine Coast Council gets $84,000-plus out of Beerwah residents and gives nothing back in public transport. Maybe Rick Baberowski, Councillor Division 1 with Transport, the Arts and Heritage portfolio, can explain the logic? Brian Beerwah
Transport Levy vs bus services Re the news story in GC&M News, June 28: I had the weird notion that Sunshine Coast Council provided services to assist the community. Wrong again! The cancellation and reduction of bus services in the Hinterland again shows the elderly and the incapacitated, who are without that common thing called a car, will suffer the most following council’s decision. With some 133,600 rateable property owners now paying a Transport Levy of $42 pa, (an increase of 55%), council has around $5,611,000 to play with annually, most of which, I am told, is being spent on the coastal light rail project. The levy is being used to promote coastal at the expense of hinterland areas. Give us a go – we only need a little bit of the pie, which we already pay for anyway. The blurb on council’s website states the levy is designed to: 1. “Speed up improvements to public transport and promote usage.” How does the removal and reduction of existing services achieve this? What happened to “improve and promote”? 2. “Build stronger partnerships with State Government”. Our State Member Mark McArdle, in the same article, is “concerned with this decision and urges consultation with the local community, etc." So much for the building stronger relationships with the State Government bit, and I have not heard of any consultation on this matter. It’s time the bureaucrats generally came out of their little ivory towers, mingled with us, and thought outside the public service circle. J.T. Weeks Beerwah
Fire disaster waiting to happen? Having read the J.T. Weeks' letter (GC&M News, June 28) I agree with the concern indicated as to the closeness of the houses in the estate, so much for the rural look – it’s more like inner city dwellings. While I understand the need for such housing and after all the council are our elected representatives, we therefore have to live with their and our indirect decision. Regardless, it is too late now. My concern above all would be the proximity of houses in the case of fire. It would seem to me there would be little chance of confining a fire to one house should it happen. Is the Fire Brigade consulted in these decisions and is there a safety distance specification? Peter Lloyd Landsborough

Needs-based funding In this topsy-turvy world, can someone explain why the teachers union would oppose needs-based funding (introduced for the first time) and increased funding for government schools, where these union members teach? Julia Gillard had the guts to kick off reform (Gonski 1.0), but the mythical ‘pie in the sky’ $22 billion that the ALP government did nothing about but talk about (and still does) has left it to the Turnbull government to implement Gonski. It’s not perfect, and just throwing more money at it isn’t the whole solution, because issues besides money need addressing too (e.g. increasing the teaching standards, and status, of teachers) but it’s a first solid foundation. But the teachers’ opposition to Gonski 2.0 doesn’t make sense. At least with the CFMEU we know where they are coming from (and should go), but why is the teachers union playing politics in support of the ALP at the expense of the students they are supposed to be teaching? School Chaplaincy I have been a member of the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy Committee, of which GC&M News is a valuable supporter, since it commenced in 1995. Although our children had long since left high school I considered having a chaplain important for the school. The committee and the community has a proud record. Originally a chaplain was employed for two days a week and this gradually built up to five days a week with the help of local churches, businesses and residents. There was no government support until recently and, while appreciated, it would only cover one or two days. School chaplaincy wages and superannuation, etc, are managed by the Scripture Union which the committee is glad to leave to them. The chaplain is not there to try to convert students, although they are allowed to answer religious questions if asked. He is there as a friendly helpful person who they can approach with problems in confidence. He is also there for parents or staff if they wish. This year the committee have found that our reserves are slowly dwindling away. If you feel able to help please contact Chaplain Mike Turner at the school (after the holidays) on 5436 5333 or donate online at suqld.org.au or phone 1300 478 733 and be sure to mention that you want to donate to Beerwah High School Chaplaincy so Scripture Union can direct your donations there. Modern technology In his two letters (GC&M News, June 14) Gerry Muller appears to have two different standards regarding new technology. In one letter he is “eager to embrace modern technology” in communications which has caused thousands of Australian call centre employees to lose their jobs to lower paid workers overseas. In the other he is concerned that not enough jobs will be created by the Adani Carmichael coal project because “everything will be autonomous from mine to port”. Australian Mining Companies operate in many different countries and benefit from cutting edge mining technology developed there. We bring that engineering to Australian mines and improve on it so that our mines are some of the most productive and cost effective in the world.
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Australian mining software is used worldwide because it is the best. “What’s really going on” is that the $900 million dollar government loan to build the railway line will make other proposed Galilee Basin coal projects viable and create many more mining-related jobs. The statement that solar power is now cheaper than coal in India is nonsense. Solar power stations only produce energy when the sun shines and battery storage costs would make their electricity far more expensive than coal. Conventional coal fired power stations then have to provide backup and base load power when there is no sun so the solar power costs are added to the cost of the coal power stations which can generate the same amount of electricity on their own and Indian power prices will increase just like here in Australia. Sel Hopley Maleny
The big issues There are many sizable issues encircling humanity right now, threats to the natural environment, to our way of life, our wellbeing. Conflict seems to be on the rise, people more polarised in their views. Yet what could well be the biggest disrupting force for humans this century is largely being quarantined from public discussion. The threat is the Sun. Every 180 years it goes into a deep cooling cycle and changes life on Earth substantially. Despite our historical studies we are largely endowed with short memories. Two cycles ago we had the Maunder Minimum which froze large portions of the planet for 70 years. Winters were much more severe, summers cooler and of shorter duration – food production collapsed and so did populations. Two cycles earlier, a major long-term cooling brought about the end of the Medieval Warm Period. There are scientists warning of the coming solar hibernation, but who is listening? Readers might want to track down a copy of the book ‘Chill’, by environmentalist and scientist Peter Taylor, and see what he learnt working for the UK government as an alternative energy advisor to Tony Blair. Behind the scenes scientists were warning the government of a coming mini ice age, yet the public were told the opposite. Over a thousand kilometres of mangroves are dying off around the Gulf of Carpentaria. The reason for this is the sea is receding. You might wish to take a trip to the south island of New Zealand and witness the glaciers nearly all growing. The northern hemisphere has just had a very harsh winter. The Sun is free of sunspots and the TSI (Total Solar Irradiance) is declining. Jon Woodlands Cambroon
Landsborough overpass needs a rethink Having viewed the proposed designs both by the State Government and private individuals for the Landsborough overpass, I can only conclude that all parties need to think a bit more laterally. All solutions involve a tortuous realignment of what appears to be several kilometres of road, construction of roundabouts and a very significant disruption, in most cases permanent, to many businesses in the Landsborough shopping centre. In Melbourne, years of suffering level crossings on many lines have been alleviated by putting the railway line under the road, in other words, creating grade separation by sinking the line rather than raising the road. Currently, the single track into Landsborough is significantly higher than the road. From my
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
observations, the elevated track appears to be almost constantly under some sort of repair and maintenance between Beerwah and Landsborough. I have no doubt that this also occurs elsewhere due to the heavy freight movements on the line. Engineering a solution that would involve constructing a second track under the existing road, to ensure the line stays open, then duplicating the track under the road, would provide a robust and cost effective solution with minimal disruption to the local community and businesses. It would also be less noisy, something that residents would welcome. The railway station at Landsborough would need to be lowered and the level crossing at Tunnel Ridge Road could be replaced by a simple bridge as the railway line returns to ground level. On the down track, there is plenty of distance to transition the track back to ground level at Beerwah which is lower than Landsborough. This option needs to be explored. It seems, however, the Department of Transport who wrote and administer the Project Cost Estimating Manual, have gone to great lengths to ensure that planning for railway extensions and building are far more complex than those for building a road, and the whole rail building process thus appears far too hard due to bureaucracy. Many studies show that rail is ultimately cheaper than road, and more beneficial to the environment and the community. It is time to rethink the project. Ken Dyer Landsborough
The Beerwah railway overpass I was surprised to learn that the State Members for Caloundra and Glasshouse believe that the people of Beerwah were not consulted about the rail overpass. In fact, when the original plans for the second stage of the duplication were first revealed, they contained no provision for the replacement of the Beerwah level crossing, only for that at Barrs Road. Many Beerwah inhabitants, including regular attendees at Beerwah NHW meetings, were appalled at the thought of the traffic chaos which would ensue if the level crossing were to be closed more frequently, so a public meeting with Councillor Anna Grosskreutz and Member for Glass House Carolyn Male (at that time the whole of Beerwah was in the Glass House electorate) and the planners of the new line to express our concern was arranged. The planners then produced several possible plans for an overpass which were displayed in the Community Hall. All save the one finally implemented involved the demolition of many buildings in the centre of Beerwah, and even the final plan was originally designed to be built in two stages, with the first stage involving a temporary connection to Turner St which would have required the redesign of the Turner Street - Peachester Road intersection, and would have destroyed completely the ambience of the quiet residential end of Turner Street. Beerwah residents were then asked to vote for the design they thought best, and the one that now exists received an overwhelming endorsement, provided the whole of the plan was implemented. Fortunately, our argument that this would be much better, and would cost less in the long run, was accepted. The one thing no-one had really taken in was the effect on pedestrian traffic of the closure of the level crossing. When I questioned Councillor Anna about this, she assured me that the revised plans for the duplication included a pedestrian underpass at the station, which would have solved most of the problems. I hope the new plans also include an underpass. Sheila Williams Beerwah

State Member for Caloundra Landsborough community consultation is the only way
It was late September 2016 when I started receiving phone calls and emails from concerned residents of Landsborough. That month a very small group of people in the town had been sent information regarding the Government’s proposal to put a rail overpass in Landsborough after the so called ‘reference design’ had been completed. Sadly the Government didn’t ask the community for their input beforehand. Word quickly began to spread through town about the proposed overpass that would travel east to west over the rail line – shutting off many businesses from passing road traffic, affecting people’s livelihood by devaluing property and hitting home owners who could lose their homes. The so-called consultation happened between October 6 and 14, 2016 – but only people who “may potentially be directly affected” were notified of the consultation by a letter dated September 28. The bulk of business owners and home owners had no idea what was happening because they were not told. The real crux of the story here is that Landsborough is fast becoming another community left under informed and with very limited consultation in a plan that would have significant impact on the town. Many of you attended the public meeting that Andrew Powell and I held in December 2016 where the community made it very clear that they wanted a say in the future of Landsborough. Andrew and I had earlier attended a government briefing in November last year and were told further community consultation would be happening. Despite requests for more information we have met a stone wall. You cannot treat people – our people – that way. Something certainly needs to happen and it is clear that the only way forward is to consider the question, with community consultation front and centre. That is why, on June 26, Andrew and I announced that the LNP would restart the process in conjunction with the residents of Landsborough. It’s important to always remember local people have knowledge and history of their town that no bureaucrat sitting in an office in George Street can have. We cannot have a repeat of the chaos that happened in Beerwah. We cannot go blindly into the future ignoring what we know happened just down the road. The people who live and work in Landsborough must be involved from day one. The Natural Death Care Centre (NDCC) is a not for profit organisation that promotes the philosophy that death is a natural and sacred end to life that can be prepared for and managed well. Exploring and embracing death in advance can help empower people with knowledge and compassion for the profoundness of this inevitable journey. Zenith Virago from NDCC will be hosting a documentary screening and Question and Answer session at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday July 12 from 6pm until 9pm. The documentary is entitled ‘Zen and the art of dying’ and the evening will include a discussion facilitated by Zenith who has over 25 years experience working closely with people who are dying as well as the hearts and minds of their bereaved. “We all have the inherent capacity to do death well. By demystifying death in a deep and rich way we empower ourselves and others,” says Zenith. Tickets for the documentary evening are available for $17 via Eventbrite or $20 at the door. For those who would like to explore these concepts further, a three day ‘Deathwalker Training’ course will be held at Cooloolabin (near Yandina) in forest surrounded by Mapleton National Park from Friday July 14 through to Sunday July 16 from 9.30am to 4pm daily. If your bridge, denture or dentition are functioning fine, then there is no reason to have implant treatment. Because of the loss of the tooth root, we often lose the underlying bone. This leads to a loss of gum contour. Being aware of how much is actually missing is important before the treatment begins. Rebuilding the lost bone and gum is possible, but should be done prior to implant placement. Placing the implant makes rebuilding the bone and soft tissue more difficult. As implants may last longer than the natural dentition, consideration of what will happen in years to come with loss of gum height from gingival recession is important to consider. There should always be a plan on how to treat the rest of the mouth. Sometimes that may include removing healthy teeth to be included in the final prosthesis to save replacing them at a later date.
Using hynotherapy and NLP to quit smoking with Powerful Transformations
Research shows that 62% to 70% of smokers have tried to quit without success. Cigarettes are very expensive. So, why do people continue to smoke? And why is it so hard for so many people to quit? Many people find it hard to find the willpower. The addiction is too strong, the withdrawals are too uncomfortable, life too stressful. Others are worried about cravings and worried about gaining weight. The fact is simple, smoking is not under our conscious control. Consciously we tell ourselves we are not going to smoke, but those unconscious patterns, triggers and habits just kick in and we have no control over them. Smoking is something your subconscious mind simply does automatically. You smoke the majority of your cigarettes almost unconsciously. It is a habit triggered by your unconscious patterns. The only way to quit is to change that habit and alter those patterns. You can try ‘cold turkey’, or you can do it the easy way with hypnosis and deal with your own individual reasons and triggers. Call Mary today on 0457 230 952, and quit for good. One session, two hours, and you’re free forever.

The Lookout Café We are so blessed to live where we do as more often than not even our coldest winter days are filled with sunshine. Even though the temperatures don’t usually plummet to the depths of our interstate cousins the cooler weather definitely inspires us to seek out more hearty meals and we are naturally drawn to more warming foods. This month Lea and I headed back up to the Lookout Cafe to sample their menu and while it wasn’t freezing there was still a nip in the air which made the thought of sampling something hot and hearty even more appealing. As always the outlook was spectacular and in a nod to the cooler days cosy ‘nana rugs’ were laid out on the backs of chairs which provided a nice touch and made me immediately want get snuggly and order a hot chocolate and soup. I went for the homemade Soup of the Day which that day was cauliflower and parmesan and it came out steamy and nice and cheesy. On other days the soup of the day has included potato and leek, lentil and vegetable and the very
popular pumpkin soup which, according to staff, is always a big hit with diners. The menu had quite a few hot dishes on offer including Lamb Rogan Josh served with rice and naan bread, Beef Lasagne and Burgers (vegetarian and meaty). Lea thought the ‘Big Burger’ with 100% mince pattie served with beetroot, egg, salad and dressing along with a side of chips looked enticing, though the jacketed baked potato also looked good.
There were a few ‘lighter’ meal options such as the toasted chicken, bacon and cheese wrap with either Barbeque or Hollandaise sauce ($10.50) which would leave just enough room to eye off the homemade cakes, all $6.50 (including Gluten free and Vegan options) and served with icecream or cream if desired. It was perfect weather to enjoy a warmed sticky date pudding served with butterscotch sauce, so Lea and I dug in – all in the name of research. The Lookout Cafe is open during the week from 9am-3pm and from 9am until 4pm weekends.

A shared love of harp
with Dr Michael Whiticker
Music Today Creating words or art with music
Last month we looked at using the imagination in any music therapy you might be undertaking, with your reinforcing the power of the music to heal by visualising a positive image of yourself healthy. Extending the use of the imagination to the listening experience can open up music creatively to people who perhaps don’t see themselves as musical. I do know that many visual artists listen to music while painting, and some authors listen to it while writing. Let’s see where this sort of approach might lead us. We begin with a careful choice of music – the wrong piece can have a detrimental effect on something we are doing, or would like to do! So-called classical music often works well as an accompaniment to tasks, as it is generally instrumental, uses a wide range of textures and dynamics, ebbs and flows much more than popular musical genres, and a piece can be very long – take for example a Mahler symphony which can last well over an hour! Would you like to try using words to enhance your listening experience? It’s best if you say them out loud as then you will immerse yourself much more in the experience. You’re sure to know an inspiring text, so here is your chance to read it out loud! It might be a prayer or poem or even a short story. A challenge, however, will be to find music that feels right with the text you’ve chosen. So perhaps work the other way, give yourself first to the music and see what sort of text comes to mind. You can do this by quietening your mind as much as possible, sitting with the music, perhaps with your eyes closed and letting it take you over. What will certainly happen is that your mind will wander. That’s to be expected. Then it’s just a case of coming back to the music. But don’t expect an immediate result. It may be that you need to repeat the process a few times before you start to reap a reward for your efforts. Or it could be that you need to know the music well before you can add something of your own to it. If words (or noises) don’t flow you may have a desire to paint, or draw. Go with the experience. We are all musical, it just speaks to us differently. Do have a fantastic month. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. A special concert tribute to Glasshouse Country school chaplains will be held at Peachester Hall on Sunday July 30 from 2.30pm featuring beautiful harp music performed by Witta couple Graham Langdon and Rowena Thomas. Graham and Rowena met locally through their shared love of harp playing. They discovered their mutual appreciation for the beauty of harp music around four years ago while taking a break from performing at the Maleny Celtic Winter School Music Festival. Since then, they have enjoyed performing regularly together at numerous events and gatherings across the Hinterland as well as at international events such as the Irish International Harp Festival. Both classically trained, the couple share a long standing involvement in musical arts and they bring a wide range of influences to their work. Their performance repertoire is reflective of the incredibly broad history of the harp with pieces ranging from medieval to baroque times, Eastern European to South African culture, though their main influence is from Irish and Scottish traditions. Originally performing as part of the harp trio ‘Harpnotica’, in recent times they have decided to concentrate on delivering performances as a duo. Rowena continues to work in her ‘day job’ as a National Parks Field Botanist, however along with Graham she rehearses on most days for an hour or so and the couple often seek to create their own unique interpretation of arrangements and compositions. The couple regularly play on weekends and they try to choose pieces that accentuate the beauty of the harp sound rather than highly technical or complex arrangements. The upcoming concert on Sunday July 30 at Peachester has been organised by Ted Prickett of the Glasshouse Country Anglican Church. Tickets do not need to be prepurchased however a donation of $10 on the day is suggested, with the proceeds going towards supporting the Glasshouse Country Chaplaincy programs.

Real Estate 200 new residents for Mooloolah MALENY COMMERCIAL LAUNDRY
Only business of this kind in the Maleny, Montville & range area. High profile, profitable business servicing the accommodation & tourism industry. Fully equipped with washing, drying & sheet ironing machines, water tanks, water softening unit, folding tables etc. & delivery van. Being sold as a going concern with long term employees and long lease with an option to buy freehold. Accountants figures available to genuine buyers.
A development application has been submitted to Sunshine Coast Council looking to create a new 60 lot housing estate on Kings Road, Mooloolah. The almost eight hectare parcel of land at 138 Kings Road is zoned as low density residential and so the development fits within what council has determined as appropriate for the site. The subdivision will create 58 new house lots plus two reserves to be handed over to council. The planning documents estimate that the completed development will see an extra 200 people living within walking distance to Mooloolah town centre. The development will abut ‘The Springs Mooloolah’ estate and will have access to all urban services, including water and sewerage. House lot sizes will be from 700m2 up to 2,313m2. Whilst the planning report recognises that many blocks are smaller than the 1,000m2 minimum as set out in the town plan (39 of the 58), they justify the noncompliance by the fact that the approved adjoining estate (The Springs) is similarly noncompliant. To read more about the proposal, go to www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au and search for ‘REC17/0093’.

Tomato
Vegge Notes
The shorter ones This time I’ll look at growing the determinate (the lower growing bushy varieties) tomatoes. These are often more compact, grow as a bushy habit, fruit at the same time, tend to require limited staking or support and have a defined growing period before they stop growing and die. A benefit is that they tend to mass flower, producing lots of fruit which ripens roughly at the same time. Varieties include Roma, Tiny Tim, Patio Prize and Patriot. Prepare the bed well with compost, old manures, pelletised chook poo, blood and bone, a handful of dolomite (to sweeten the soil and provide calcium), some sulphate of potash and a sprinkling of trace elements. Determinate tomatoes also do well grown in large containers using a good potting mix. But make it large, as tomatoes grow a decent sized root system and restricting them too much will result in poor fruit set. Plant the seedlings the same as for indeterminate... plant them deeply – just above the first set of leaves. Tomatoes will grow roots from their stems, so you end up with a strong plant. If you’re planting in a garden bed, plant them 50-60cm apart to give the roots good soil space and stake them straight away – a short 1m stake will do. Mulch well and water in with a seaweed solution. You can also train them within a wire structure – like a cylinder of dog wire fencing or make something similar with four stakes and tie garden twine around them to form a growing tube. Or you can just let them grow and tumble about, that’s just a good as well. I grow some in the garden and some in large pots in sunny spots about the yard. In pots I make a cylinder of wire so that it’s easier to pick them later and they don’t spill down and get run over with the lawn mower. Don’t bother about pruning the side shoots, just let them all grow, as they’ll all produce some flowers and fruit. Tomatoes feed voraciously and so will need to be supplementary fertilised every two weeks. As the flowers develop and set fruit, you’ll have to watch for caterpillars, fruit fly and pesky parrots. The best way to deal with all three at once is to cover them with a fine mesh supported over a frame. Even watering is vital –the plant (and fruiting) will suffer from diseases and other problems with uneven watering. Because determinate tomatoes ripen roughly all at once, you’ll need to have a succession of plants growing to keep up your supply. I like to plant new tomatoes a month apart, which then (hopefully) gives me continuous picking. Once they’re finished, don’t replant tomatoes into the same place for another 18 months, as this just encourages soil nematodes to build up.

Water weed unwelcome here Through the vigilance of Sunshine Coast Council staff, a serious declared category 3 pest plant has been found lurking in the waterways of Glenview and Palmview. Hygrophila (Hygrophila costata) is a 1m tall marsh plant, growing in water or wet soil. Originating from Mexico and Argentina, the weed has infested areas scattered across South East Queensland, and has been found as far north as Cairns. With the ability to regrow from any part of the plant – even a small leaf fragment – Hygrophila is a serious threat to freshwater aquatic ecosystems and the creatures they contain. In a cooperative approach, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Biosecurity Queensland) and Sunshine Coast Council staff have been meticulously surveying areas along the Mooloolah River in Glenview and Palmview, searching out any indications of the plants presence. Sunshine Coast Council Vector and Pest Control Team leader Mark Call is pleased with the supportive response from landholders. “We have been making sure that local landholders are aware of what Hygrophila looks like and what to do if they find the weed. “We’ve had a number of infestations reported after we did letterboxing and through liaising with local residents. “It’s pleasing to us that our community engagement has been received so positively and has fostered a joint approach to dealing with the problems detected.” Biosecurity Queensland officer Stacey Harris would like locals to check their dams, creeks and waterways. “The weed forms dense infestations that replaces native aquatic plants in a short period of time,” she explained. “This is an issue for freshwater ecosystems due to how dense and quickly it can grow, however it can be easily controlled using an aquatic herbicide. “Other invasive aquatic weeds to be on the look-out for include Senegal tea, Hymenachne and Alligator Weed.” If you think you may have Hygrophila or one of the water weeds, contact Sunshine Coast Council on 5475 7272. For a factsheet on Hygrophila and other water weeds, head to www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au.

I have always been fascinated about people who live a long and fulfilling life. Recently a lot of attention has been focused on “blue zone” areas. These blue zones are recognised areas where peoples averagely live longer. This fascinated me; how can I live longer? At only 27 I wonder if I should be asking, but it does interest me. After reading through Dan Buetter’s book, ‘The Blue Zones of Happiness’, I stumbled on the epiphany that to live a long lasting healthy life, it is the quality of life I need to focus on rather than the quantity. I was also interested to see that health was seen to be more important than just diet and exercise (still rather important though). Blue zone areas place a significant emphasis on emotional, relational and even spiritual aspects of their life. It is an interesting concept to think that your family and friends could add or subtract years from your life! Seventh-day Adventists are home to one of the blue zones located in Loma Linda in California in the USA. This appears to be counter cultural
to health struggles that face the obesity-driven lifestyle of most North Americans. Seventh-day Adventists have long been proponents of seeing health as more than food and exercise. A strong emphasis on nutrition, exercise, food, fresh air, rest and emotional wellbeing has seen a rise in the quality and quantity of lifestyle. All of the blue zone areas don't appear to think about health, they just seem to live life. It has been said that it is not the years of life you lived, but the life in the years you have lived. This would be true of the blue zones. Why not take the opportunity to make your home and our community “blue zones” of quality of life?

with Cameron Taylor Last weekend San Training Centre’s taekwondo team competed at the Caboolture Open competition. They entered their largest ever team with 11 athletes entered in 10 divisions and finished the day with a total of five gold, four silver and three bronze medals. Several of their fighters were competing at their first ever event. These included 8-year-old Conner Adam who comfortably won two fights to win gold in sparring then also competed in the patterns competition where he finished third. San’s other fighters competing for the first time also had good results. Aimee Augustine claimed Gold, Steel Skerman and Lachlan Adam finished with Silver and Sonia Wearing Bronze. None of San’s more experienced fighters had an easy victory – especially Joey Mortimer, who won his final in Golden Point overtime to take home the gold medal. Emma Hall also finished with gold, beating the other six fighters who were in her division including a fighter from South Australia in the semi final. Aaron Lerch finished with silver after he lost a close final of the Junior black belt division, the difference at the end a single point. West Skerman, using great tactics and patience to force his rival to make errors, won gold in his division. Charlie Bidgood and Sienna Cameron also both finished with bronze.

Witta Tennis
Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wonders were up against last year’s finalists Mooloolaba and it was always going to be a big ask to get around them. Led by the somewhat jetlagged Jani, the team went down 7 sets to 5 and 58 games to 52 on what was a superb afternoon for tennis at the Mooloolaba Courts. Close sets were the order of the day and tie breaks the ultimate deciders in several matches. We go into the second half of the draw within contention, but needing to knock over a couple of good sides to remain in the finals mix. Many thanks to our travelling players who come from all over the coast and surrounds to make up our team. Thanks to Caroline, Jane, Jani, Frank and Anthony for getting us as close as we did. The Witta Wompoos travelled to Gympie to take on the Division 2 leaders Gympie Silver. A solid start saw the Wompoos leading 5 sets to 3 with 4 sets remaining. Unfortunately Gympie were too good, winning the last 4 sets to secure a 7 sets to 5 victory. Bob was the stand out player for the Wompoos winning 3 sets. The efforts made by Brenda, Hayden, Ernie, Annette and Andrew were not enough on the day. Well done Gympie, the Wompoos are looking forward to the return match later in the season. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

The Blackall Range Croquet Club
Contributed by Neil Lovett Unfortunately our visit to Caloundra for the Bray Shield Pennant match was not very successful. Results (Range players named first) were: Robert Elliot 11 Jan Robertson 13, Sarah Widin 7 Jocelyn Lerch 12, Sarah and Robert 6 Jan and Jocelyn 7. Caloundra won 3-0. Birds and bandicoots have been having great fun digging in our lawns, and even after our lawn maintenance group had been at work on Thursday, there were repair patches everywhere. Fortunately, even in winter, grass recovers. There was keen play in the afternoon, with Donna Manning and Vince Carbery, both in good form, accounting for Ken Barker 16-12, and Frances Harper holding out against the fast finishing pair of Kath Smith and Jan Barnes to win 9-6. Our lawns are in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road. Playing times (in the cooler months) are 1.30pm on Thursday and Sunday. Regular coaching is offered on Saturday mornings, with the club’s mallets available for beginners. To enquire about coaching, hiring or joining, ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs Just like mom
ARIES March 21 - April 20 The emphasis for the first week of July, and perhaps throughout the month, is that there is a lot of energy going through your home and family interests. This could see you working around your property, or families visiting as a family reunion. It is also time to consider a home office or a new guest room. Enjoy things after recent stress. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 The first week starts off with lots of nervous energy. There are people or circumstances coming into your life introducing unexpected changes. You should see your love life become more interesting as well as seeing a fantasy movie. Think about home entertaining. The planetary energies can see you as a fabulous host or hostess now. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 The presence of Venus in your sign can see you making this week, or perhaps the whole month, extremely satisfying. There is energy that belongs to money earnings, gifts, bonuses, and profits. If you wish to buy or sell, your charm will be lively, smart and flirty! You draw to you what you need. Take good care of financial paperwork. CANCER June 22 - July 22 This month will resonate strongly for you and there is such a term “the child of Luna”. The negative side of Luna means you could become over emotional, hence the term “lunatic”, but really what is in your heart should be more pertaining to be a caretaker. It is a week that you tend to others but you must not forget looking after self!

Week Beginning 05/07/17
Many weeks go by and again Manny and his friend get together. "So, Manny, did you find that perfect girl yet – one that's just like your mother?" Manny shrugs his shoulders, "Yes, I found one just like mom. And my mother loved her, and they became fast friends." So should I congratulate you? "Are you and this girl engaged, yet?" "I'm afraid not. My father can't stand her!"

LEO July 23 - August 22 The planet Mercury is coming up to your sign from the 5th, so what you say at the end of the first week will be straight from your heart. Your famous charms will be more irresistible and you are likely to send out some enchanting invitations. Early in the week don’t fight any opposition and don’t explode! Stay calm and in control now. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 There are some excellent stars for you to communicate effectively now, and use such skills to your advantage. There may be time to promote your current agenda. As Venus moves into the sign of Gemini for the rest of the month, you should attract the attention of people in high places. You may land a plum assignment. Ask for a raise. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 You are still lucky all month with Jupiter in your sign and flowing through the personality sector of your chart. This is like being free to go anywhere you wish. Mars moving through the sign of Cancer will highlight your profession, public standing and dealings with important people, perhaps including a government bureaucrat. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The emphasis for the first week looks to be whether you wish to travel overseas or just interstate. There may be business dealings overseas and that could mean a trip at some time in the future. It is likely to be some place you have been before. Your mind is exploring new ideas and plans for the future. Avoid potential danger areas.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 This week the one thing most likely to catch your eye will be the planet Venus in her most fun loving, flirty, playful moods. This could bring out the goodness in you. Mercury moving towards Leo makes you feel like putting on your boots for a tap-dancing effort! It’s the best week for cooperating with coworkers and checking financial matters. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This week starts your whole month as time to explore yourself in an original manner. To have lots of fun you will need to be more spontaneous. If you feel you have been in a rut, see if a friend can help you out of it and offer a chance to share delightful socialising. Relationships are high on your list so see what friends and associates have planned. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 The stars are working to make you a busy beaver in the office. This week you may accomplish miracles. It is also the time to be ready to help others, lend a hand, and welcome in new methods, especially if they are high tech related. Jupiter being in a fellow air sign, Libra, brings to you lively, lovely acquaintances. Avoid emotional confrontations. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The month starts off with various planets in your fellow water sign, Cancer. Hopefully you will be feeling loved with love flowing in from children, a romantic partner, recreational associates, and all adding up to a time of enjoyable pursuits. It’s a week that you will see shared and strengthened bonds of affection – and a time of new social activities.

Manny is almost 29 years old. His friends have already gotten married, but Manny still just dates and dates. Finally, a friend asks him, "What's the matter, are you looking for the perfect woman? Are you that particular? Can't you find anyone who suits you?" "No," Manny replies. "I meet many nice girls, but as soon as I bring them home to meet my parents, my mother doesn't like them. So I keep on looking!" "Listen," his friend suggests, "Why don't you find a girl who's just like your dear ole mother?"
