Hi Everyone... This week’s front cover features a photo of Lenore Burton with two of the young people she has been able to assist in her volunteer work as director and founder of the Friends of Ebenezer Australia Inc. In this role Lenore has been raising funds and awareness of the plight of orphaned and desperately impoverished children in Livingstone Zambia. Lenore’s efforts were recognised in the Australia Day 2019 Honours List when she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal. Since 2005 Lenore has worked with a group of locally based volunteers who have raised more than US$1 million to educate, clothe, feed, nurture, counsel and provide basic medical assistance for Ebenezer children. One thing I have noticed over the years of writing stories about people receiving awards is that so often it is the most deserving who are the most humble about what they have done. Lenore is no exception. While she is honoured to receive the award, she is also very keen to acknowledge that she was able to do this because of the support and efforts of her family, friends, the community and generous donors. To find out more about Lenore’s story, see the profile article on page 8.

AT SPICERS TAMARIND RETREAT
Looking for foster carers Have you ever thought about becoming a foster carer? A new recruitment campaign is calling on Queenslanders to sign up to provide safe and loving homes for Queensland’s most vulnerable children. Minister for Child Safety Di Farmer said that she was incredibly proud of the work done by foster and kinship carers providing shelter, comfort and love to children who cannot live at home with their family. “They are some of the most selfless, generous and caring people in Queensland, opening their hearts and their homes to children who need love, support and stability,” Ms Farmer said. “If you are interested, I encourage you to take the next step to join the thousands of other foster and kinship carers across the state.” Ms Farmer said the foster carer recruitment campaign was part of a $2.6 million campaign aimed at increasing the number of carers as part of the government’s commitment to strengthen the child protection system and keep children and young people safe. “We know we cannot do this alone and that protecting children is everybody’s responsibility,” she said. “That’s why we are calling on Queenslanders to join us.” Ms Farmer said there was no better way to know if becoming a carer was the right thing for you than seeing and hearing the stories from carers.

Daveena and Des Lawlor (pictured), who feature in the campaign, have been fostering for five years and say that it is something they always wanted to do. Des is full of encouragement for people to become foster carers. “If you’ve got a place in your home and your heart for a child – then do it,” he said. “Children are the future for us all so let’s help them have a better future.” Daveena, who identifies as Aboriginal, says it’s very important for Indigenous children to be with Indigenous carers to keep culture going. “Children need to know where they’re from and be proud of who they and their kin are,” she said. The Love Australia or Leave Party, registered with the Australian Electoral Commission in 2016 by Kim Vuga who in 2015 appeared on the SBS documentary ‘Go back to where you came from’, has launched its federal election campaign and will run candidates in the Senate and House of Representatives. The party recently announced that its candidate for the local seat of Fisher is Paul Monaghan. Mr Monaghan, who lives in Minyama, is a small business owner, plumber, teacher, dancer, author and firearms instructor. “Above all, I am a son, father, husband and a true Australian patriot who cares deeply about the Australian way of life, a way of life under threat,” Mr Monaghan said. He said that people in the electorate had told him they were not happy with their current elected representative. “I believe we should all stand up for what we believe in, even if standing alone,” he said. “Fighting for justice, family, neighbours, for the weak and downtrodden. It’s time for a purge of our politicians. “Let’s replace them with ‘real’, honest Australians who have the best interest of our people and our country as their first priority. Good wholesome values from those who represent us in parliament. “Now is the time for change so that we can still
Love Australia or Leave Party candidate, Paul Monaghan save our country and way of life. “Stop foreign ownership, stop selling off our public resources, time to make this the lucky country once more. “Our politicians are elected for a term, we need to look further than the next election, further than ‘what can I do to get re-elected’. “I want to start the ball rolling to abolish political entitlements, including excessive pensions to people who don’t need or deserve them. It may be a hard uphill slog, but I will start at the bottom and work my way up. “We need long-term vision, long-term goals to get this country back into the fast lane, an economic strength, a country that develops its natural resources, not ship them overseas and buy them back at inflated prices.” Mr Monaghan said that he wanted to see a change in representation in government and the government start to put the best interests of the people and country as their first priority. “It’s time for change. Let me bring that change for you in Fisher,” he said.

NBN tower to loom over Mt Mellum
$200,000 grant for golf club Residents and tourists will soon be able to play 18 holes of golf in Maleny following a significant grant of $200,000 from the federal government. The grant, part of the latest $30 million round of the government’s Community Sport Infrastructure program, will pay for the construction of the last six holes at the Maleny Golf Club. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said the Maleny Golf Club was a fantastic community led facility, providing a beautiful public course for locals and drawing tourists to our region. “The club and its community have worked very hard to get the first 12 holes built, and I am delighted today to be able to help them complete their round,” he said. Dr Max Whitten, Jillian Jones, Andrew Wallace, club manager Wayne Perske and Roly Nieper
Andrew Wallace on the first tee
About 250 golfers currently use the golf club’s public course each week, but club officials aim to double that number when the course has a full complement of 18 holes. Maleny Golf Club president Dr Max Whitten welcomed the government’s grant, which he said would allow construction of the remaining six holes of the club’s master-planned course to be completed by Christmas this year. For more information on the government’s Community Sport Infrastructure program visit www.sportaus.gov.au/grants_and_funding/ community_sport_infrastructure_grant_program.
Sunshine Coast Council has approved the NBN application to construct a 45m monopole tower at Mount Mellum to deliver wireless broadband to an estimated 200 local residents. Despite the objections of a number of residents who will be living in the shadows of the tower, council deemed that the tower does not pose a health risk to the residents, nor does it detract from their picturesque visual amenity. Eight submissions were received by council during the official feedback period. Only one submission was in support of NBN’s tower, with the remaining seven raising their concerns on a range of issues. In its determination, council acknowledged that the tower would negatively impact upon identified scenic route views. Ordinarily, this would make the development inconsistent with council planning scheme codes relating to the protection of scenic amenity. However, council deemed the visual impact as being “generally consistent” with the planning themes and outcomes. Council also acknowledged that the tower fails to meet the outcome that it be sited at lest 400m from any residence, with nine houses – excluding the property owners who agreed to have the tower on their land – within 400m and the nearest being 130m. However, as a result of changes council made to its own planning rules last year, it now ignores health impacts on houses being within the 400m buffer zone under the telecommunications code, merely its effect on their visual amenity. In the decision notice, council imposed a number of minor development conditions relating to colours and finishes, landscaping, noise and access. NBN was contacted for comment.

Rugby league brings Beerwah and Greece together Did you know that Beerwah and the Greek international rugby league team have a strong connection? In fact, the captain of the Greek national team – the Greek Titans – plays for our Beerwah Bulldogs. Signed by the Bulldogs for this coming season, Jordan Meads will captain the Greek Titans in their quest to qualify for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England. Last week, the Beerwah Hotel announced that it will sponsor Jordan on his journey. A playoff between the Titans and Norway will be held in London in May for the right to join the European playoffs to qualify for the World Cup. Jordan, who hails from New Zealand, is a former NRL player with the New Zealand Warriors and has played professionally with teams in France, England and locally with the Sunshine Coast Falcons and the Kawana Dolphins, before signing with the Beerwah Bulldogs. Jordan has played in the Greek national team since 2014, qualifying for selection by the fact that he is half Greek. “My Mum is Greek and my grandparents migrated to NZ as a result of World War II,” Jordan explained. “I grew up with a strong Greek influence and I’m very close to my culture. “I have a tradition that before every international game, I send my grandparents a letter and thank them for the sacrifices they made so that I could live the life I live and play the game I love.
As soon as I finish writing the letter, I know it’s game time.” Due to International Federation Rules, the Greek national team – currently ranked 19th in the world – is only allowed four heritage players (players who have Greek heritage but live elsewhere) during the World Cup qualifiers. The remainder of the team must all live and play in Greece. “The players who live in Greece have improved significantly over the past five years,” Jordan said. “I make a conscious effort to call or Skype a couple of times a week to see how they are going and catch up on their preparation. They get up in the middle of the night to watch every NRL game and they idolise the sport more than anyone I have ever seen.” But the Bulldogs and Greek rugby league have a deeper connection. At the Emerging Nations World Championship held in Sydney last October, the Beerwah Bulldogs had two representatives playing for Greece – brothers Nathan and Clinton Hughes. The Hughes brothers have represented Greece since 2014 in multiple international games. Finishing in a respectable third place, the Greek team – coached by ex-NRL player and coach, and former Greek captain, Steve Georgallis – proved they have what it takes to make the World Cup main draw in 2021. The official Greek Rugby League Australia Facebook page praised the Beerwah Hotel’s contribution to their cause.
Jordan Meads at the 2018 Emerging Nations World Championship
“Beerwah Hotel will be the 2019 sponsor for our captain Jordan Meads on our journey towards qualifying for the Rugby League World Cup”, the post stated. “Beerwah Hotel has a proud history of supporting rugby league and has established itself as one of the Sunshine Coast’s premier bar, restaurant and entertainment hotspots. We encourage all of our supporters to go and check them out whenever you are in the area!” Beerwah Bulldogs president Lee Robertson said that they consider their latest signing to be the marquee player on the Sunshine Coast. “Jordan has also had NRL experience. We were very lucky to coax him to Beerwah. “He is very much about promoting the game at all levels and with all age groups. He has a very good attitude and this really does speak volumes about him as an individual,” Lee said.

Lenore Burton OAM
Dedicated community member and Maleny local Lenore Burton was recently recognised in the Australia Day 2019 honours list with the Order of Australia Medal for her outstanding contribution towards services to youth. GC&M News caught up with Lenore to talk about receiving the award and her work as director and founder of Friends of Ebenezer Australia Inc (FOEA). Q: How did you feel to be awarded this honour? To be honest, at first it terrified me. After the initial shock I felt nervous and then tried to down play it in my own mind and thought it was much ado about nothing. On reflection, I realised just how long the process was and how the man who originally nominated me had, since April 2017, spent many hours researching the work that I do. So I had to try to process that. I feel the award was as much about family, friends, community, donors, the children and the work of the Ebenezer Child Care Trust (ECCT) in Livingstone Zambia, without which this award would never had been
granted to me. I am extremely grateful and feel honoured to receive this recognition. Q: How did you originally get involved with FOEA? We started fundraising in 2005. However, ECCT started in 2001 with a street feeding program under a tree in Livingstone by my now deceased friend Mrs Ranji Chara. I met and became close friends with Ranji when we lived in Botswana in the early 1990s. Q: How did your local fundraising efforts start? A deceased friend Mrs Dawn Sebbens and I started making greeting cards in 2005 as a hobby and came up with the idea of trying to sell them around Maleny. From then, others joined in the card making and in 2008 we received our certification of incorporation (not for profit). From 2005 to about 2017 we held a lot of fundraising events until health issues limited my involvement in events. As we are a grassroots, home grown and Maleny-based group of volunteers we have been and are still able to
Lenore with Racheal, the first Ebenezer girl student to go to university send 100% of all donated monies to the work directly. Currently we have a great team of seven for which we are very thankful! And now we rely on the support of members of FOEA, the local community, family and donors to continue to provide funds for our children’s village, our primary school, our children in high school and tertiary education and 40 acre farm. Q: Can you tell us a little more about your background? I came from a poor family, had an incomplete education and was a bit of a ratbag. From there my life was enriched with travel and immersing myself in other cultures. After becoming the director of the Friends of Ebenezer and raising more than US$1 million for orphaned and disadvantaged children, I certainly feel like I have lived a rich and fulfilling life. Q: What other community work have you been involved in? Over the years I have been very involved in the Maleny Baptist Church and assisted with literacy at the Maleny primary school. We opened our home for a group called FACE (Family and Community Empowerment) for some folk who needed some space to just be. I am a firm believer in sharing whatever I can, wherever I can, be it time, whatever ability I have been gifted with or sharing space in our home.

Community News New Lions branch
The next chapter in the Maleny Blackall Range Lions story got off to a cracker start recently. Seventeen new members were inducted in preparation for the new club branch to serve the communities of Montville, Flaxton, Mapleton and surrounds on the Blackall Range. The story started back in October 2018 when president Chris Sang asked past president Peter Jensen to conduct a feasibility study into the need for, and the viability of, forming a new Lions Club on the Blackall Range. Peter’s investigation found there was significant awareness of Lions, due in no small part to the club’s expansion of projects into these communities in recent years, and many residents expressed an interest in joining Lions if it had a ‘local’ club. A community information night was held in early
February at the Mapleton Bowls Club which attracted more than 35 interested residents. Peter said the new members had a wide range of skills and backgrounds and all were keen to take part in helping their community as a Lion. Steps to officially register the club branch are now under way. The first official meeting of the club branch, led by its president Geoff Runge, was held on February 19. In time, it will become a fully-fledged Lions club. Peter would like to thank all community members who expressed interest in the formation of a new Lions club, with a special thank you to the Mapleton Bowls Club for its support and for hosting the community information night. “Last but not least, a very big thank you to the members of the Maleny Blackall Range Lions for their support of this fantastic project,” Peter said.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is calling on the community to join forces to help shave the world from blood cancer. In mid-March, Mr Powell will host a local event for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave to help raise vital funds to support more than 100,000 Australians living with blood cancers like leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. “Last year, I raised a total of $1,768, with $468 donated for me to shave my beard and $1,300 donated for me to colour the beard. This year, I really want to beat last year’s fundraising total. If I raise $1,500, I'll colour from rd bea ured colo After my beard. Get me up to $2,500 and I'll 2018 shave it off,” Mr Powell said. “As an added bonus, if I raise $10,000, Todd from MIX FM will shave his beard off with me! Now who wouldn't want to see that? “I’m excited to see what the result will be this year. I know there are people who were pretty upset that more donations went towards colouring my beard last year. Hopefully they want to see it shaven badly enough that they’re willing to donate extra money towards the cause.” Every day, 35 Australians are diagnosed with a blood cancer and sadly an Australian will lose their life to the disease every 41 minutes. Leukaemia Foundation CEO Bill Petch said every person who signed up to the World’s Greatest Shave was making a difference and was integral to helping fund a future where blood cancer was no longer a death sentence. Funds raised through the World’s Greatest Shave are critical in helping the Leukaemia Foundation continue to support local families affected by blood cancer through advocating for equal access to new therapies and treatments as well as providing educational, emotional and practical support such as transport and accommodation, all at no cost. Ahoy there, have you lost your treasure? A collection of coins was found in the Glass House Mountains area several months ago but so far no owner has been identified. The collection includes a number of sets of coins, which were found with other items of property. Due to the location and the circumstances of the items being found, they may have been taken during a break in at a residence. It is not known if the coins have any monetary value, but they may be of sentimental value to someone. If you believe that this treasure might be yours please contact Beerwah Police on 5436 5222.

The Players are ‘Travelling North’
Rehearsals are well under way at the Maleny Playhouse for David Williamson’s well known play ‘Travelling North’ directed by Andrew Wallace. Williamson is one of Australia’s best known and respected playwrights. The play, set in the 1970s, sees an ageing Frank (played by Barry Harber) and his new partner Frances (played by Barbara Thomas) leave chilly Melbourne behind as they pack their belongings into an old van and point it north to settle into a life of palm trees and fishing in tropical North Queensland, much to the bewilderment and inconvenience of their daughters (played by Fleur Adamson, Shelley Love and Michelle Coates). They make friends with their new and lonely neighbour Freddie (played by Phil Boyle) and the local doctor (played by Robert Walton). Their dream of settling down to a Bohemian life in the tropics is short lived as Franks health takes an unexpected turn. Francis’s daughters selfishly demand that she returns to Melbourne, seemingly to look after their growing families. Although set in the 1970s, the play is a reflection of modern day Australian life. Many people will no doubt recognise something of their own lifelong dreams and ambitions which they may not have achieved and perhaps it will inspire others to fulfil their dream. The show will be performed at The Playhouse in Maleny Showgrounds across two weekends, on Fridays, April 5 and 12, and Saturdays, April 6 and 13, at 7pm and on Sundays, April 7 and 14, at 2pm. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students (under 18 years) and can be purchased online at www.malenyplayers.org or at Imelda’s on Maple Street Maleny. For more information please contact Rob Hobson phone 0418 785 967. Barbara Thomas, Barry Harber, Shelley Love; Rob Hobson and Fleur Adamson during rehearsals
Disaster management workshop
Community organisations across Glasshouse Country are invited to attend a free disaster management workshop on Friday, March 15, from 9am–1pm at the Landsborough Sports Complex. The workshop will focus on how community groups plan, prepare, act and recover together in the face of natural disasters. Our community and organisations may or may not have been affected directly by a natural disaster in the past but when disasters strike evidence has shown that communities that are connected and prepared manage better and recover well together. The Hinterland Community Development Program, part of the Caloundra Community Centre, has partnered with Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to develop this workshop specifically for the Glasshouse Country community. Hinterland Community Development worker, Natasha Odgers said this was an ideal opportunity to come together and make important first steps to prepare community organisations for when our communities need it the most. “This workshop will give groups a greater understanding of what is in place for our area when natural disasters occur and what we may need to act on. This could be cooking, fundraising for school resources to get kids back to school, collecting supplies, sharing tools and so on,” Natasha said. There will be opportunities to network with people from other groups over morning tea and lunch. Registrations are required by March 13 for catering purposes. For registrations and enquiries please contact Natasha on email natasha@calcomm.org.au or phone 0418 720 515.

BioBlitz comes to Mary Cairncross
Matthew Flinders The recent discovery of the remains of English explorer Matthew Flinders in the old St James Gardens burial grounds under the Euston railway station in London serves to remind us of the historical significance of Flinders to the Glass House Mountains. Captain Flinders, a Royal Navy explorer, cartographer and navigator, made several journeys to the continent now known as Australia and was the first person to circumnavigate our coastline in the very early 1800s. Earlier, Flinders was sent in the sloop Norfolk to explore the Glass House and Hervey bays. He called the strait separating Bribie Island from the mainland the Pumicestone River. He took the sloop up into the Pumicestone channel for about five miles to a sandy stretch on the west side of Bribie Island. Here the sloop was beached and some repairs undertaken. Flinders decided to take a closer look at the Glass House Mountains. On July 26, 1799, accompanied by two seamen and his Indigenous interpreter Bongaree, he travelled up Elimbah Creek and eventually made his way through low swampy country to Mount Beerburrum. These first known climbers of Beerburrum were rewarded with a magnificent view of the bay. The next morning Flinders intended to also climb Tibrogargan but the presenting steep climb up the eastern face changed his mind. Flinders died on July 19, 1814 at the age of 40 but his name lives on through Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, the Flinders Ranges in South Australia and in Queensland with Flinders Peak, Flinders Reef and Flinders River – the longest river in Queensland. For those who can remember pre-decimal currency, Flinders’ image appears on the 1953-1954 series of Australia’s ten shilling note. Interested in learning more about Bankfoot House? Have you ever been to a rainforest and looked up, wondering how many creatures and plants live together on the tallest trees? This month scientists contributing to the BioBlitz at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve are attempting to answer that question. The ecological survey in Maleny’s coveted rainforest reserve will be reaching for the skies, exploring five magnificent strangler figs (Ficus watkinsiana) from the buttress roots on the ground to the emergent canopy more than 40m up. The BioBlitz will run from March 28-31 and scientists from different universities and fields will be observing, listening, counting, measuring, photographing and recording all the organisms they can find. Six artists will also be on hand to offer their interpretations of the many varied life forms in and on the research trees. The event will be supported by a team of volunteers, who will assist the researchers and help as interpretative guides. BioBlitz coordinator Liz Capelin said volunteers would be “the buttress roots of the event, supporting all activities”. There will be a lot of activities that the community can also get involved in, including early morning pademelon counts, meet and talk with Jinibara elders, learn to keep a nature journal, come on a bat detective night walk, or attend the Q&A panel discussion on biocommunication at the Maleny Community Centre. Visitors to the Rainforest Discovery Centre can listen to bioacoustic streaming from microphones high up in the canopy or take on the ‘Questagame challenge’ and use their phones to photograph the creatures of the forest. “We really want the local community to learn as much from the BioBlitz as they can. Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is such an ecological treasure and the more we know about it, the better we can value it,” Liz said. Further information is available on the Sunshine Coast Council website in the Events section. Interested people can volunteer and bookings can be made for the few sessions that are ticketed.

Tally’s our Youth of the Year
The plight of refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru was the topic of Tally Brown’s five minute prepared speech for the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club Youth of the Year competition held recently. The Maleny High School student clearly impressed the judges on the night, taking out the $200 public speaking bursary competition as well as receiving the $1,000 Roger Jackson Memorial Youth Achievement bursary. The youth achievement bursary was presented to Tally by Tricia Jackson (pictured), the wife of the late Roger Jackson who was the club’s foundation president. The speech brought back memories for Tricia who was born on Manus Island well before it became a site for a detention centre. Tally will progress to the regional final of the Lions Youth of the Year at Bribie Island and, depending on how she goes, may end up back at Maleny for the 201Q3 District Youth of the Year final to be held at the Maleny Showground pavilion on March 23. The final is open to the public. To attend this important annual Lions event to be held in Maleny just this year, contact the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club on maleny-blackall-range@lionsq3.org.au. 16
Student volunteers William Robertson and Phoebe Echter
Big thanks to volunteers The Landsborough Museum was recently privileged to have two University of the Sunshine Coast students volunteer at the museum during their Christmas/summer break. Phoebe Echter and William Robertson brought their enthusiasm and energy, and applied their skills to historical research and helping out with cleaning and maintenance around the museum. “It was delightful to have such fresh faces around the museum and Phoebe and William were happy to help in any way. They brought a new perspective to many of the museum’s displays and we hope to see them during their next summer holidays,” president Tim Venter said. If you are interested in history and would like to contribute to preserving the heritage of the Sunshine Coast region, you can volunteer at the Landsborough Museum. Phone 5494 1755, email landsboroughmuseum@aapt.net.au or visit the website www.landsboroughmuseum.org.au for more information.
Beerwah Writers Group
Contributed by Patty Beecham We recently welcomed two new writers to our group David M Cargill, who drove 80km from Linville to meet with us, and Russian-born but proud Peachester writer Innessa Hook, whose poem The Mountain was recently published in GC&M News. Innessa said she joined this group to improve her writing and to motivate herself to write more, especially song writing. “Writing in English is challenging for me, and I practise my skills by emailing newsletters to my Facebook followers, inspiring them with music, quotes and poetry," she said. You can follow Innessa at innessamusic.com. David a prolific writer of short stories and poetry, said the long drive from Linville, west of Kingaroy, was worth it, and the social atmosphere of the Beerwah Writers Group will help him to focus on his creative side. The Beerwah Writers Group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month at the Beerwah Library from 10am-12noon. We are a group of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing. Members attending usually donate a gold coin to defray the cost of morning refreshments. New members are very welcome and encouraged. The yearly subscription is $5. Have you ever wanted to be part of a men’s chorus singing in the barber shop style of no backing music and in four-part harmony? The Sunshine Statesmen are offering a free voice coaching program, starting on May 1 and running over four weeks on a Wednesday night from 7.30pm. On the fifth week there will be a short concert for family and friends to appreciate your newly mastered singing and performing skills. The program will be fun and light-hearted learning experience, guided by the well-known musical director of the chrous, Brian Martin. The chorus is made up of around 40 men who come together each Wednesday evening at the Buderim Uniting Church hall, on the corner of Gloucester Road and King Street, Buderim. At the conclusion of the coaching program, you can audition to become a full-time member of the chorus to join it in various sing-outs at retirement villages, nursing homes and Christmas carols at various Sunshine Coast shopping centres. Whether you are a tenor, lead, baritone or bass (or as yet undecided), you will be made to feel welcome to join in the fellowship and fun of singing with a group of like-minded men. It is sort of like a men’s shed for men who can’t use tools, but love to sing! For further information, contact the secretary Peter Hall on 0477 559 205, president Malcolm Woods on 0411 742 073 or visit the website www.sunshinestatesmen.harmonysite.com.

Music Today
The spirit of Woodstock
It’s been 50 years since Woodstock – four days of “peace, love and understanding” – which was attended by half a million people at a 600 acre farm in Upstate New York. The message of Woodstock is probably even more important today as we see governments the world over using the politics of hate and divisiveness to get themselves re-elected. For some Woodstock was the extraordinary bringing together of many of the best musicians ever in one place at one time that was memorable, for others it was the failed business venture and the counter culture with its dalliance with drugs and free love. Let’s focus on its positive aspects. That is the message to return to today. It was all about loving your fellow man and uniting in a shared dream of a greater good. A sense of "togetherness", which is perhaps hard to find if a festival is characterised by corporate sponsorships, pricey tickets, merchandising and expensive beer. Woodstock was the amazing confluence of some of the world’s greatest acts. Sure the weather was bad but the music continued right through the night. There was little sleep being had anywhere, but it didn’t matter. It was people sharing a love for great live music and that was all that mattered. Has the internet turned listening to music into a solitary pursuit for us? We no longer go to record stores and share our musical passions and discoveries with other music fans, so the thrill of the physical search for good music has been replaced for us by … the shimmering screen? We aren’t attending live music events the way we used to. Who could be blamed for choosing the soft option, of listening comfortably at home after work? Yes, we've changed the way we consume music and we have got used to accessing whatever we want, immediately. We are defining ourselves by our existing likes and dislikes in music rather than the thrill of not knowing and sharing a new discovery on a patch of ground we might share with countless others at a music festival. Live music has a thrill all its own. The Eudlo Music Nights is on April 6-7 celebrating the music of the Woodstock generation with a ‘Return to Woodstock’ concert. But that is just one part of a wonderful live music carnival. Why not get that little bit wild and adventurous for a weekend in April and get along to Wominjeka Park in Eudlo. www.eudlomusicnights.com.au Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. You Said It Climate and energy
I was disappointed to see GC&M News publish two climate denial letters in the February 20 edition. Every single ‘fact’ in those letters was either a distortion of truth or an outright lie. Sadly, there are vested interests assiduously writing letters on the topics of energy and climate to all Australian regional newspapers in a concerted effort to influence the next election. Readers need to be on alert. Rather than write a long rebuttal, refuting each and every erroneous claim made in the letters in question, let me refer readers to a couple of websites dealing with these issues in a straightforward and honest manner: https://reneweconomy.com.au and https://skepticalscience.com. Armed with those two sources, readers will be able to make their way through the FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) promulgated by agents of misinformation. Gerry Muller Maleny
Are we there yet?
In reference to the development application to build 23 units and 10 “rooming accommodation” rooms at 37 Maleny Street, Landsborough. In June last year Sunshine Coast Council issued the developer with an information request to be completed by March 12. The developer has now requested a further three-month extension to reply to these information requests. The development must adhere to the Landsborough local plan code, which provides an assessment benchmark for development in Landsborough. It states that a development "contributes to the character, setting and identity of Landsborough as a rural town with a strong sense of place and association with the past". The site for the development is situated in a very prominent location. Currently it is a gateway site, is on a scenic route, offers local area character and identity, retains natural environment elements and character vegetation, has an open feel and open space, has two adjacent historic homes on the gateway and is picturesque. Will future development on 37 Maleny Street: 1. be compatible with the rural town setting? 2. compliment the traditional built form character? 3. contribute to the establishment of an attractive gateway? 4. enhance rural town character and sense of arrival? We can only wait and see. Diana Michaels Landsborough - Love Where We Live

Frustration as rules change
There was consternation from residents at Beerburrum's Twin Cedars over 50s community village recently when new American owners Hometown Australia grounded the community bus. This decision has been made on the basis of voluntary drivers not agreeing to assume responsibility for $1000 in respect to damage caused to the bus in an at-fault accident. They have also introduced new red tape procedures regarding the operation of the bus. Feedback to the residents from other villages owned by Hometown Australia was that they also had their community bus grounded for the same reasons. The grounding has upset a number of residents who now have no access to shops, medical or recreational activities because Beerburrum has no public bus service. Prior to new owners taking over the service was operated with pre-approved voluntary drivers from the village, who signed a risk management agreement acknowledging their responsibilities, but they were treated as the owners (own drivers) regarding motor vehicle insurance. The Twin Cedars Home Owners Committee has called for negotiations over the matter and a deferral of the grounding for a few months. Graham Neilsen Beerburrum
Beerburrum quarry questions
As the time draws closer for the Sunshine Coast Council to make its decision regarding the development application to establish a quarry at the Beerburrum gravel pit (historically used by forestry to access gravel for use on roads into and out of the forest), several serious questions have arisen. 1. A key resource area (KRA) was established in 2013 with no community consultation. A KRA declaration stipulates that there needs to be a 2km gap between the development site and local communities. In the current development application the distance between the proposed site and homes has been reduced to just over 1km. Why have the rules been broken in this case? 2. Why has the developer – Barro Group – been nominated as preferred supplier to the Sunshine Coast Council, when they currently have no operation in the Sunshine Coast region? 3. Have there been any studies done on the effects of dust inhalation for families living on the perimeters of quarries, especially in view of the fact that forestry, in this case, will commence harvesting in the next couple of months removing the existing vegetated buffer zone. Add to this the number of quarry trucks expected to traverse the peaceful and quiet town of Beerburrum – 120 heavy vehicles per day, six days per week. 4. How will forestry now be afforded access to the gravel pit for their own use in road construction, with the KRA awarded to a commercial business forcing them to purchase the resources they require? 5. Serious concerns have been raised about rumours of dumping of DDT and Agent Orange (after the Vietnam War) in or around the gravel pit site. Is this accurate information, or just an urban myth? We would welcome any contact from persons who may have direct knowledge. We can be contacted on our Facebook page – Beerburrum Action Group. Heather Cardaci on behalf of the Beerburrum Action Group

What about our children?
While the pro renewable energy side and the climate change deniers fight each other over the facts and figures of the climate debate, both sides of government sit on their hands and refuse to acknowledge what is obvious to the general public. Catastrophic changes are occurring around the world with rivers and lakes drying, polar ice and glaciers melting, rampant bushfires, droughts, rising sea levels and totally unpredictable weather events. If neither the Liberal nor Labor parties undertake immediate measures to address these issues prior to the election should we be voting for sincere independents who will? Our children are asking for your support for their school strike on Friday March 15 at 11am at Peregian Beach. If you care at all for the future, then please go to the website www.schoolstrike4climate.com and register your intention to support them. After all, we can vote but for these students whose future is at stake they have no voice. David Hine Glass House Mountains
Paragliding on Platypus Bend?
I write once again on the fate of Platypus Bend, the vacant paddock on the Maleny Community Precinct that our campaign would like to see realised as a spacious community park. The bend is leased to the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) until 2045, together with an adjoining site that Sunshine Coast Council recently endorsed for development as an indoor fitness village. MDSRC’s new website tells us that the two sites will form a “sports park” as they comprise “the only remaining council-owned flat ground zoned for sport in the district”. In the interests of accuracy, we wish to point out that the only council-owned grounds zoned for sport in the Maleny district under the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme are the Maleny showgrounds and the Witta sports ground. Like the rest of the precinct, the site leased to MDSRC has been zoned community facilities since 2016. The website also claims, contradicting itself, that the site is zoned for “sport and community purposes” (no such zone exists) and advises that MDSRC has been “tasked” with developing it “under council guidance” for “active sport and recreational activities” for the “future needs of our growing community”. Despite this, the website states that “multi-use playing fields” are already on the table, forgetting that amenities involving ground excavation on Platypus Bend are problematic. In 2016, planned footy fields were excised in favour of the Maleny showgrounds and the Witta sports ground, and dressage, jump and polo fields were found to be unfeasible. Recently, a member of the MDSRC management committee proposed its use as a take off and landing field for powerassisted paragliders. Many local organisations with no connection to sport and a tenuous or non-existent connection with recreation are affiliated with MDSRC, making it the most influential not-for-profit in our district. MDSRC will “assist/support and promote them in their endeavours” in return for same, leaving the community beholden and the fate of Platypus Bend foregone. How nice it would be if a few brave affiliates stepped up. Jane Hyde Community Parks Maleny Campaign communitymaleny.org

Generous support appreciated
Thanks to GC&M News for printing my letter about the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre flood crisis fundraiser for an equivalent centre in Townsville. The donations have been overwhelming, some small and some large. I know that in these circumstances some people who are not well off give very generously, and my special thanks to them. The community has donated over $1,700, which is being doubled by our sponsor. The latest report from the manager in Townsville is: "At this stage of the recovery our focus moves to longer term support”. Funds are being distributed directly to families/ residents in impacted zones. The money will help to supply food vouchers, replace school uniforms, help people secure alternative accommodation and replace flood damaged items from their homes. This is a great chance of doubling the impact of your tax deductible donations, so if there are other people still wishing to support the effort I urge them to donate now. Donations can be made by going to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre website and clicking on Crisis Support, or go direct to www.malenync.org.au/crisis-support/, or they can call into the centre. Of course, should any reader in Maleny or surrounds be in strife themselves, the centre is here to help and everyone is welcome to the $5 community lunch on Thursdays. Council spending
Did anyone else read the message from our Mayor that came with the recent rates notice? It would seem that Glass House Mountains didn’t received anything of note. We can't get footpaths, drainage or potholes fixed properly but the arts in Caloundra seems to have millions spent on it. While the council does mow our grass every now and again, you can always tell when they have been because they leave the grass cuttings all over the place so they get into the drains we do have and block them. I would also like to know just what we pay the transport levy for. Where is the transport in or out of Glass House Mountains? Where is that money going? I wonder if council would like to give us a break down of the transport levy paid by ratepayers and just how much there is in that kitty? Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains
Landsborough rail upgrade / overpass meeting
A meeting of concerned residents in relation to the rail upgrade/overpass in Landsborough was held on February 12, with a lot of concerns and ideas being raised at the meeting. The main concerns were: 1. The lack of consultation with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) in relation to the plan for the overpass. 2. The fact that TMR has ignored requests for them to attend a public meeting to inform residents/businesses of their plans for the overpass. 3. The uncertainty for residents who don’t know if their property will be resumed and are unable to find out any concrete information. 4. The worry that even if their properties are not resumed, they will be surrounded by a concrete monstrosity. The outcome of this first meeting was that we contact TMR and the Premier stating the necessity for a public meeting with TMR present to answer the questions of concerned people. We will hold another meeting in the near future on a date yet to be set. If you are interested in attending this meeting, please email laca@landsborough.qld.au. We need to have a rough idea of numbers so a suitable venue is obtained. The first meeting was held at Morris House but we may need different venue if more people are interested in attending. By the time of the next meeting, hopefully we will have had a response from TMR and the Premier. A Husband Secretary Landsborough Area Community Association Inc (LACA)
Not again
I was not surprised by the response of several of your contributors last week. If they had taken off their blinkers, opened their minds and delved further into “those peculiar corners of the internet” they would discover that we actually live on a carbon-based planet. Far from being “a pollutant” CO2 is essential to all life on this warm world. It gives plants the carbon they need to build their leaves, branches, trunks and root systems, which all other life feeds on. It is also essential as a greenhouse gas in regulating the temperature around us. I recently had a light bulb moment, something I had never really considered. As a modern species we are less than 10,000 years old. Prior to that we were all hunter gatherers living in small family groups. It was only after the Earth had warmed sufficiently from the last ice age that life could
proliferate and cultures expand. First in India then the Middle East, China and finally into Europe and North America. Life in the oceans and on land exploded and is continuing to do so, because it is warm and CO2 is abundant. I am concerned about the rising cost of energy caused by our fixation on renewables, all of which we buy from overseas and are heavily subsidised by taxpayers. We have some of the most expensive power in the world and it’s getting worse. Being retired I worry like many other oldies that, as I age, I will not be able to afford to run my air conditioner, which in later years could affect my health and quality of life during both hot and cold weather. This current debate is more about politics than science. The government would be far better spending our money on adapting to climate change, than acting like King Canute trying to hold back the tide. Derek Browning Glass House Mountains
Climate of concern
What sort of world will your grandchildren live in at the end of the century? Scott Morrison has revealed his Climate Solutions Fund. It is a fig leaf to cover the self-inflicted wounds caused by Coalition feuds. It meets the needs of his major factions - it will be ineffective (tick from climate deniers), it gets taxpayers to pay for pollution (tick from Coalition sponsors) and it spreads money around rural electorates (tick from backbenchers wanting re-election). Australia’s target of 27% reduction by 2030 is highly insufficient and is nowhere near our share of the task of keeping the increase in global temperatures below two degrees. If other countries follow Morrison’s lead, your grandchildren will be living in a world four degrees hotter and flooded by a one metre sea level rise. Sunshine Coast canal developments will be dodgy but the hinterland will be better off than most of Australia. Modelling suggests that summer rainfall will stay about the same but come later in the season. Unfortunately the higher temperatures will lead to more evaporation and stress on the vegetation. The Great Barrier Reef will be dead and bush fires will rage through a parched Murray-Darling Basin. Obsolete Prime Ministers are often sent off to comfy overseas posts. Morrison should be made ambassador to Tuvalu - taxpayers would not begrudge buying him a pair of gumboots. David Lowry Conondale

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast Road upgrade, Landsborough I’m pleased to report that council will soon upgrade and widen a poor quality and very narrow section of Mary Street, Landsborough. This upgrade will provide an 8m wide sealed surface about 400m in length between William Street and Gattera Road. As part of this project, drainage will be improved, a section of guardrail installed and underground services relocated. Works are anticipated to be completed by late May.
Food & Agribusiness Network We need real rural production to stay real in country towns, so on Thursday, February 7, I was pleased to attend the first Food & Agribusiness Network (FAN) event of the year. Coffee connections is a new collaboration between FAN and Montville Coffee to give new and existing members the opportunity to exchange ideas, contacts, etc, in an informal setting over a cup of coffee. It’s very encouraging to see so many committed local agribusinesses offering a wide scope of quality products under one roof. We are very fortunate to have rural production as part of our economy and these networks keep it a viable part of our country towns. There were honey producers, coffee roasters, microbreweries, a cider maker and many more. Visit www.foodagribusiness.org.au for more information.
Flexilink transport service Peachester to Beerwah Flexilink trial services provide affordable, reliable and accessible public transport for people with few transport options living between Peachester and Beerwah. This transport service helps them connect to the main township and transport hub in Beerwah. Flexilink services are funded by council's transport levy on a trial basis and current passenger numbers are low, with an average of 17 passenger trips per month recorded between July-December 2018. The steady decline in passenger numbers is of concern to council, so I encourage the Peachester community to use the service or work out how it can be usefully improved to grow usage. The transport levy must be considered and confirmed each year. Council continually assesses how levy funds will benefit the community and as this service is a trial, without reasonable demand it will be hard to argue for it to remain. Residents need to use it to keep it! Timetables are available on council’s website and also from the Beerwah Library.

State Member for Caloundra The Pumicestone Passage catchment
The Pumicestone Passage is the waterway that sits between Bribie Island and the mainland, stretching 35km from Caloundra to Deception Bay. However, the entire Pumicestone Passage catchment encompasses much more than the passage itself. Covering a total area of 784 sq km, the catchment includes every creek that flows into the passage, as well as the land surrounding it. Water from as far away as the D’Aguilar Ranges makes its way to the passage using a water network that includes Bells, Mellum, Coochin, Tibrogargan, Hussey, Elimbah and Ningi creeks. The passage is a significant waterway as it is home to turtles, dugongs, more than 350 species of birds and an estimated 65 endangered, vulnerable or near threatened species. It is therefore important to understand that its health is impacted by the health of every creek that flows into it – not just what happens beachside. The passage has social, economic and environmental links to communities well into Caloundra’s hinterland with many hinterland residents enjoying the passage for work and play. It is a boost to tourism and what we do in the catchment impacts on the passage. An ongoing action plan for the catchment was produced by Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay councils and covers issues such as improving water quality, protecting wildlife habitat and minimising impacts from population growth. We must understand that what we do collectively, irrespective of where we live or work, can have an enormous downstream effect on the passage and, in turn, an impact on what it will be for future generations. Cyclone Oma has affected Bribie Island and I see a University of Queensland research team is now undertaking a study in relation to its impact. I look forward to publication of the report and understanding the effect of the cyclone.
Landsborough overpass community consultation
On January 7, I wrote to the Department of Transport and Main Roads on behalf of the Landsborough community asking for representatives to attend an upcoming public forum concerning the rail overpass plan. I did not have a response to the correspondence and on February 7 I wrote to Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey asking for his assistance. At the time of writing I have not had a reply. I will keep the community posted of any news I have on this matter.

Classrooms in the kitchen and garden
Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester State School year 3 students cooked up a storm last week for their very first cooking lesson as part of the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG) program. The program is designed to sit beside the Australian Curriculum, giving the students a practical space to use literacy, numeracy, science and valuable life skills. In their first garden class the students established their own group gardens that they will maintain throughout the year. They started with the no-dig approach and spread mushroom compost, worm castings, egg shells, coffee grinds, newspapers and mulch. The students are awaiting their first plantings this week and are planning what to grow based on their own research of what is in season. (Many thanks to Brownie’s column in the GC&M News). One group is planning a pizza garden. The children whipped up a healthy feast in the kitchen. In their first lesson, each group made

Vege fun for everyone Educators and children at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre are super excited to be starting a brand new early childhood literacy program based around healthy eating. Centre coordinator Dee McCann said that the 12-week literacy program ‘Vege fun for everyone’ had been specifically tailored to develop a fun and positive attitude towards vegetables. Incorporating a seed-to-table approach, the program is targeted at kindy aged children and has been developed in consultation with Queensland Government departments and Queensland Child Care Services head office and catering partnership, The Healthy Cooking Company. “Using a play-based approach, the aim of the program is to increase children’s food literacy and knowledge and promote learning and experiencing vegetables in a fun environment that encourages creativity, self-directed tasting and food skills,” Dee explained. With research in developing the program finding that less than 1% of Australian children meet national vegetable intake guidelines, Dee said that for most children liking vegetables based on taste and texture did not come naturally. The program therefore seeks to increase interactions by parents and young children with vegetables in order to assist and develop increased interest, awareness and liking of vegetables. This innovative food literacy program seeks to increase vegetable acceptance and preference by using a key set of behavioural tools. These include repeated tasting, role modelling and a sticker and praise-based rewards system. Research has shown that repeated tasting leads to familiarity in children and the centre educators assist with positive role modelling by exhibiting healthy eating behaviours, sitting with the children at meal times and interacting. Eating in a family-style dining environment has also proved to reinforce positive eating behaviours. Dee said the centre educators were excited about the program as well as the various ways they could incorporate key aims of the program through aligned activities at the centre. Gardening and harvesting vegetables, holding a farming day to discuss the life cycle of vegetables, a kitchen day and cooking day were some of the interactive activities planned to compliment the program.
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Follow up activities include a visit to the local Woolworths for a tour of their fresh produce section, which proved a massive hit with the kindy children last year, and a host of fun arts and vegetable themed crafts. “Each week, we will feature a vegetable of the week, and our kindy children will take home a packet of vegetables and recipe card to use at home. This is a great way to extend the program and encourage home role modelling, which is an intrinsic tool of success,” Dee said. If you would like to find out more about the centre and current availability for 2019 please call 5438 7311, or call in to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

From the churches You may have heard the saying “Nothing is certain, except for death and taxes. It is often attributed to Benjamin Franklin when he commented on what was then the new Constitution of America. Others have contested this credit, saying it was in existence decades before Franklin. But I think we can all agree that change ranks pretty high up there as another one of life’s certainties. I have a friend I very much respect for his advice particularly about Christian ministry, who is currently undergoing a serious, personal health issue. I can only imagine not only how concerning this is to him but also how concerned he must be for what his wife and family are thinking and feeling. (There seems to be nothing more concerning than facing health changes in our lives.) He is an inspiration to me because he is secure in his guaranteed hope of eternal life. He recently told me that is ready to face God, his Maker. Change happens from our conception to our
Australia’s largest debt counselling charity, Christians Against Poverty (CAP), will run a free budgeting course at Sanctuary Park Church of Christ Family Centre in Nambour over three Saturdays - March 30, April 6 and 13 - from 1011.30am. CAP Money is a revolutionary money management course that teaches people budgeting skills and a simple, cash-based system that really works. The course can help everyone to get more in control of their finances, so they can budget, save and prevent overwhelming debt. Course facilitator David Jones said the CAP Money course was a proven and effective budgeting system and the group was excited to bring it to the local community for free. “It’s always so rewarding when people come to a CAP Money course and realise that there is a way to manage your finances so that you are prioritising properly without limiting yourself from doing all the fun things, David said. For more information about the course and to register, go to www.capmoneycourse.org.au or call the Sanctuary Park Church of Christ office on 5441 2833 (office hours Tuesday-Friday, 9am– 2.30pm). The course will be held at 22 National Park Road, Nambour.

Ps Mal Moses Glasshoue Community Church death. I was reminded only today by our church’s previous pastor that some things in life happen outside of our control. Change is inevitable. The real issue about change is how we face it when it comes. The Bible (New International Version - NIV) says in James 4:14: “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. John Piper, in his book titled ‘Life as a Vapor’, writes: “Life is short. Eternity is long. Live like it. How ready are you for the ultimate change in your life? I encourage you today to read John 3:16 in the Bible (NIV) and take God’s word as true and place your eternal life’s trust in His promise: “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Mooloolah Valley Country Club
The club is getting ready to celebrate its first birthday and boy do they have a lot to celebrate. Over the past 12 months it has become a really popular spot for locals and visitors to enjoy. The Mooloolah Valley community has definitely embraced the venue as their go-to place for a great night out, not just for a family dinner, but group outings, celebrations, barefoot bowls and to enjoy the wonderful food, great entertainment and good vibe of the place. What we love is there are plenty of different spots to enjoy and our favourite is the rustic undercover outdoor area that looks out over the bowling green. It is a perfect spot for a leisurely Sunday breakfast, or a quiet lunch time meeting and when the sun goes down and the funky lighting comes on it is a cool spot to have
a drink with your mates. Last week we had dinner at the club on Thursday night when Mexican is on offer, as well as pizza and the regular dinner menu and some great live music. If you have been meaning to drop in and see what the club has to offer, it will definitely be worth heading along on Saturday, March 16 to its birthday celebration, where there will be live entertainment from 12noon and charity pig racing from 1pm as well as some great food and drinks on offer.

Out & About World Day of Prayer Glasshouse Country, like communities around the world, celebrated World Day of Prayer last Friday, with church members from across the area coming together for the service at the Calvary Lutheran Church at Glass House Mountains. The country in focus this year was Slovenia, with information shared about the lives of Slovenian people and the social challenges the country faces. Following the service there was a morning tea with Slovenian potica, which is traditional bread that looks a little like a jelly roll made of very thinly rolled yeast dough spread with a nut paste. In 2020 the country of study for World Day of Prayer will be Zimbabwe.

Festival organiser Andrew Wallace said one of the great aspects of the festival was that it allowed a number of films to be seen and discussed in a short space of time as well as providing an authentic feel for what was going on in the Australian film industry right now. The festival program kicks off on Friday with the official launch party followed by a screening of ‘Jirga’, which was Australia’s submission for the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Picture. Also screening will be the hilarious short film ‘Your call is important to us’ starring Andy Lee. Saturday’s program features the inspiring documentary ‘Backtrack Boys’ followed by a meet and greet with representatives from the movie. There will be a free afternoon panel discussion and short film session featuring favourites from the 2018 Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival, which is held in Gympie each October. On Saturday night special guest speaker and emerging Australian film talent Alena Lodkina will introduce her feature ’Strange Colours’. On Sunday there will be an early 10am screening of ‘One Less God’ followed by a free film appreciation workshop and the final session of the program will ‘Ladies in Black’ at 2pm. In the Garden Ask Brownie
This is an orchid that I was given by Dad. As you can see it flowers from the base and sometimes through the basket. I do not know its name. Kind regards, Jim Straker, Reesville Hi Jim What you’ve got there is one of the Stanhopea orchids. These unusual epiphytic orchids have the peculiar habit of flowering from their base so it’s really important that the container they grow in allows the flower spikes to easily pop out. Something like you have – a wire basket with paperbark casing – is great but anything with lots of openings on the side and base is ideal, such as an open weave basket or a timber slatted box. They also have fragrant flowers, which is a double bonus. Being an epiphyte, they prefer an open potting media of sphagnum moss, fine bark and maybe some coconut fibre. They like to be well watered – even every day – as long as the potting media is free draining and water doesn’t pool in whatever they’re potted in. Grow under cover in a light but shady position with good air flow. There are quite a few species and hybrids of Stanhopea orchids, so I’m not sure of the exact one you’ve got … maybe one of our local orchid experts could send me an email to let me know – brownie@gcnews.com.au.

Kale
OK trendsetters, it’s coming into kale season. Kale smoothies, kale super shots, kale burgers, kale chips, kale soup, kale pasta with kale pesto … it’s a hipster’s paradise. But buying all that organic kale can be a mega drain on the (bitcoin) credit card. Answer: grow it yourself – how urban farmer is that! Here in Glasshouse Country, kale is best grown from now until about November. The cooler, less humid days are best for growing kale and you don’t have hordes of caterpillars and grasshoppers making your kale their lunch. Kale, being from the same family as broccoli, kohl rabi and cabbage, loves rich soils high in organic matter. Dig through lots of compost (mushroom is good), manures, blood and bone and some dolomite lime to counter balance the acidic organic matters. They are super easy to germinate from seed and grow to seedlings very quickly. I like to grow the red Russian and curly varieties as these tend to produce consistently over a very long period. You’ll only need a half a dozen of each, unless you’re a big kale eater then I’d suggest a dozen of each. This will take about 4m2 of garden bed, planted about 30cm apart. I like to let the kale seedlings grow to about 10cm before planting them out, then I dibble a hole with my dibber, plant them, water them with a seaweed solution, mulch around them, then let them do their thing. If you have problems with snails, slugs, possums, bandicoots or brush turkeys, you’ll have to protect them with whatever method you find works for you. Water every other day, side dress with some blood and bone and they’ll grow up and away in no time. You can pick the leaves from whenever you want as they respond well to being harvested regularly. Early in the season before the winter sets in, watch out for caterpillars. You can pick them off or spray with a pyrethrum spray or something like a BT product or ‘Success’. After about two months, sow and grow some more seedlings so that you can replace the plants that have failed or the ones you’ve exhausted by picking them. Kale is a great thing to grow if you like to give things away as you are almost guaranteed to have an oversupply. Although kale is claimed to be a superfood, it’s no better or worse than broccoli and other greens. But we can all do with more leafy greens in our diet, so it can’t hurt to grow and eat more kale. Add it to stir fries, shred and mix it with mashed potato, tear and add to salads, chop and bulk up pasta sauces, sauté with butter and sesame seeds … there’s more – and better tasting – ways to eat your kale other than just in a smoothie.

Sport Glasshouse Country Bowls Club
Maleny Bowls Club
Beegees Football Club
Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, February 27: Ladies day champion fours round two. Marilyn Podmore, Jenny Morris, Wendy Platt and Chris Freshwater defeated Millie Freshwater, Lyn Griffiths, Jenny Hobson and Di Hume 25-22. Lee Meyers, Di Garland, Chris Dougan and Rae Farrell defeated Sally Squires, Noelle Dean, Maz Idle and Marilyn Boulton 35-6. Big win, but great to see all the ladies out there giving it a go. Social - Noelene Annakin, Viv James and Ron Wilson defeated Joy Reason, Graham Meyers and Dennis Hume 26-11. Bruce Angus and Ron Rix defeated Lindsay Henderson and Warren Blackbourne 21-17. Thursday, February 28: Social - open pairs. Winners with the highest winning margin in either game were Mac Townson and Rob Scullion with +12. Runners up with the lowest winning margin in either game were Bruce Angus and Phil Siggers. Lucky draw went to Chris Dougan and Jimmy Tatum. They were the second card drawn as not all team members were present in the first draw. Full green plus already this week, so some triples will be played again. The ladies financial day will be held on Monday, March 11, and both women and men are welcome. Morning tea will be at 9am for a game of bowls at 9.30am, with lunch, prizes and raffles also on offer. Please put your name down on the board in the bowls section. Kerry Capern Day last Sunday was another huge success. It was great to see a full green of bowlers with many visiting teams attending. Winners with two wins +27 margin were Eileen Pierce, Chris Dougan, Mac Townson and Rob Scullion. Runners up were David Hayes, Jack Chirgwin, Bill Tumbridge and Paul Chirgwin with two wins +18 margin. Third prize went to Sally Squires, Maz Idle, Ann White and Warren Blackbourne along with Noelle Dean with two wins +8 margin. Thanks to everyone that supported the event.
Contributed by Graeme Glover Wet, windy weather hindered the start to the week with the unfortunate cancellation of our Monday pairs. Damp leaf matter made it impossible to prepare a quality surface for this event. Thanks to all our regulars for their understanding of how artificial surfaces need to be groomed and maintained just like the lounge floor at your own home. Roy Gesch and Dave Burgess do a great job for all of us – thanks to both for your many hours of action. Our new Tuesday crew got a game in, which was great. Thanks to those bowlers who are turning up to make this a fun event for members and visitors. The format is determined by the numbers attending with voucher prizes for winners. Contact person is Joe Walters, a 2019 board member who has been given the role of developing this format for the club. We are hoping that folks may be able to consider it among their other commitments. Joe says it's meant to be very relaxed and fun, so to those wanting something on a Tuesday morning contact Joe directly or come on down. Thanks to Ray Ellemor for getting another round of Wednesday night fixtures happening. More close games were the order of last Wednesday night. The quality of bowls being played is truly a credit to all who are now Wednesday night regulars. Well done for making this your thing to relax, enjoy and create new friends in Maleny at MBC. A reminder to all, everyone gets a game, so come and try the best Wednesday night entertainment in town, with burger and bowls for $13. Friday Scroungers was an outstanding afternoon of bowls. It was a full rink of bowlers - our biggest ever crowd of 25 playing this draw format of the game, which is great for bowls and the club. Congratulations to the many new bowlers who are joining in and competing at an amazing level for novices. They are to be congratulated on their willingness to give all these events a go. Thanks also must go to those members who encourage and foster the new bowlers. It is this feature alone that does the most to future-proof our club within the Maleny community.
Contributed by Stuart McIntosh Season kick off 2019 – full of confidence On Saturday, March 9, afternoon the season begins for the reserve men at 4pm followed by the main event, which is the premier men at 6pm against Kawana at the Kawana football home ground. On Friday, March 8 at 8.30pm the third division men kick off at the Buderim Wanderers home ground while the fourth division men kick off at 6.30pm at the Caloundra home ground. The fifth division men’s team are off to Bribie on Friday, March 8, for a 7pm kick off. All teams should be at full strength and will be looking to build on last year’s premiership wins. U6 and U7 mini roos training commences
Last Thursday afternoon saw the Beegees newest influx of top gun recruits. A marvellous turnout means that this year we will be fielding three U6 teams and four U7 teams. All youngsters were keen and are looking forward to their season kick off in a couple of weeks. Teams and team coaches were announced and mini roos coaching director Nathan Cobb said he believes this will be one of the best seasons for some time.

Sport Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Although the score for the Witta Wagtails was not in their favour, a good day was had at Eumundi. Congratulations to Eumundi’s Miss Gems on their win. The Whistlers had the bye. The Wildcats travelled to Nambour Showgrounds to compete against old friends Nambas Champers. It’s always a good battle but unfortunately Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Libby Howlett just didn’t quite make it across the line. We’ll get them next time. Social tennis is on Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm. All welcome. For court bookings phone 0437 295 501 or go to the website www. wittatennis.com.au.
The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Baker A visit from Ken Woodward from Headland Buderim club resulted in an enjoyable threesome on the lawn on Thursday, February 21, with Gillian Bradley pairing up with him to challenge Ken Barker to a short game of association. They played well but Ken had a couple of lucky breaks to creep home 8–2. Donna Manning and Nick Cram did the club proud by playing in the Mary Masters tournament on Saturday and Sunday, February 23-24. Both struggled with the hoops as did many other players in the tournament. Rosemary Newsham of Stephens club won the overall event, George Oliver from Coolum the plate and Don McGillivray of Bundaberg the consolation event. Thank you to Bribie for hosting the event. On Sunday, February 24, Vince Carbery played Stuart Craig and Val Carbery winning 11–10. Sarah Widin and Ken won against Kath Smith and Helen Andrews 15–6. Nick Cram (in photo) is a picture of concentration and a study in balance, doing a long take-off with the black ball to his opponent on the other side of the lawn in the Mary Masters competition at Bribie. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showground from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are 2.10pm for 2.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs A cop came a knocking
A policeman knocked on my door this morning, but I just locked it and sat there in complete silence. After 20 seconds he knocked again, but I just continued to ignore it. The knocks got louder and more frequent but I was determined not to move in the hope that he would just go away. Then, he decided to look through the window. He shouted: "Do you think I'm stupid? I can see you in there, sir. Open the door!"
Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 A good week except for the Mercury retrograde this month and that starts on March 6th. You should remember to revise, repair and renovate. With the planet Venus entering your compatible air sign of Aquarius during March your social life will be a burst of activity. Mercury retrograde usually brings friends back from the past. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 You are in for sudden unexpected changes now as the planet Uranus leaves Aries and enters your sign. Any area of your life where you are rigid and habitual will change. Relationships that no longer serve your best interest will fall away. If you are in a job that you dislike you may lose that job, freeing you to do something you love. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Well this week sees the New Moon in Pisces and by coincidence the planet Uranus enters Taurus. As Venus has already entered Aquarius and that part of your chart rules your spiritual beliefs, publishing, international travel, higher education and philosophy … you might head off for some exotic port of call with a friend or partner. CANCER June 24 - July 22 This is an amazing week as it features the first Mercury retrograde of this year and Uranus makes a major shift from Aries to Taurus. We see the New Moon in Pisces by March 7th. Keep in mind that under a Mercury retrograde you can avoid many pitfalls by listening to your intuition. New Moon in Pisces brings sentimental issues.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 March sees you at several points this month feeling the need to get away for a few days. There will be a few delays in your plans unless you double check your appointments and schedules. This is because of a threeweek Mercury retrograde to contend with. So, this period it is best not to buy high ticket items or sign contracts now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The planet Uranus makes a major shift and moves into a compatible sign namely Taurus. As this planet forms an excellent angle to your Sun sign you will benefit tremendously from this transit. Just take note that Mercury will retrograde for three weeks but that should see some improvement in what you earn. Unusual ideas occur. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 From early March the planet Venus enters your sign marking the beginning of one of the most creative periods for you all year! Your head and your heart are now in complete agreement. Your partner and you find new ways to be creative. After March 6th Mercury turns retrograde meaning take precautions for your finances. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Even though the planet Mercury is with Venus and the New Moon, the energy for March will feel strange. From March 6th Mercury goes retrograde for three weeks and it is necessary for you to communicate clearly in your emails and phone calls as dates and times can be easily mistaken. Funnel your imagination into creative endeavours.

I said: "You're not coming in mate!" He said: "I don't want to come in, I just want you to step out of the car."
LEO July 23 – August 22 This week starts a month where abrupt unforeseen changes occur. This may possibly be in your career area. Many will feel like changing careers but that could come through a promotion. Perhaps you might become more independent and launch your own business. Mercury retrograde suggests to avoid expensive purchases now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This week starts an interest in new spiritual beliefs, radical exciting changes with foreign travel and people. Definitely an excellent time to study anything that prompts your development and evolution. You might decide to go to a law school! You will be attracted to someone with unusual ideas and decide to team up on joint projects. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 With Uranus entering the sign of Taurus this will bring an abrupt change into resources that you share with others. You may experience a change in income because of a partner. It all rests on the fact that anything where you are already rigid or habitual will be changed. Avoid signing brand new contracts this week. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 With Venus moving through Aquarius the Scorpio’s home life should be pleasant and unhampered by problems. You may decide to revamp your home in some way and make the rooms more colourful or perhaps different wall decorations. This is a time when you and your partner may do some creative brainstorming about the future.
