SUMMER FUN

Welcome

What a year it has been! A year that has not come without its challenges for all. Opening and closing doors, shuffling exhibitions and workshops, it has been an interesting time. A big thank you to all who have supported us. We love what we do and are so glad that you do to. Looking forward, we have a huge SUMMER FUN program for you to EXPLORE, get EXCITED and IGNITE that creativity! Explore Excite Ignite is our creative learning program funded by Create NSW. Make sure you get in early, as many of these workshops and creative opportunities will book out. In the Gallery this summer we celebrate our local artists Rose Burke, Yvonne Kiely and Gloria Muddle, and a new and exciting show from photographer Sophie Howarth! To celebrate, we are shouting you a glass of bubbles at our Xmas opening! We cannot wait to celebrate with you!

On behalf of the Gallery team, we would like to wish you and your families a joyful and safe festive season. See you in the Gallery soon. Bridget Purtill Gallery Curator

BEHIND THE LENS WITH SOPHIE HOWARTH Behind the Lens captures the transportive journey through the eyes of Sydney Photographer Sophie Howarth. Behind the Lens diarises and celebrates the anthology of imagery, telling individual stories, capturing experiences, culture, and land. Guided by intuition, openness, risk taking, and the constant search for that moment that sits ‘in between’, Sophie’s lens has not only captured moments that would be published and celebrated for years to come, but would also be the guide to a wonderful journey of learning, new experiences and the quest for authenticity. Sophie’s lens has become a prolific tool that has guided her career into sweaty mosh pits of the Big Day Out festivals, featuring in publications like Rolling Stone, working for some of the biggest advertising campaigns, travelling to far off lands and selling over 8,000 copies of her self-published book Peace Love and Brown Rice. “I like the way I can use photography to tell a story. The feeling that was infused in the picture at the moment it was taken, embellishes the story. This is the art of photography for me”. CLOTH, CANVAS AND GLASS: A RESPONSE TO RECENT ENVIRONMENTAL EVENTS

ON VIEW: 18 December to 30 January 2022

ROSE BURKE, YVONNE KIELY & GLORIA MUDDLE

OPENING:

Cloth, Canvas & Glass is a group exhibition by local artists, Rose, Yvonne and Gloria who have come together in friendship, collaboration and art.

Friday 17 December at 6pm

As the Mid North Coast recovers from the past recent major environmental events, the black landscapes – the dense smoke and flames, the floating embers, apocalyptic skies, and then… the rain – these three artists visually map memories and experiences through each of their given mediums. Transforming and documenting what has been left behind, what was present in the skies and sand, and the new life that came after. Cloth, Canvas and Glass breathes new life into an impossible time, celebrating the beauty, chaos, and resilience of our local landscapes, and in the end, the growth and regeneration that comes after. Gloria Muddle, Spot fires, 2021, textile Rose Burke, Beneath the Surface, 2021, float glass and enamels

LIAM BENSON YOU ALREADY KNOW

ANNA-WILI HIGHFIELD MATING DANCE

ON VIEW: 12 February to 1 May

Mating Dance by Anna-Wili Highfield is an installation of courtship formations. The sculptures are an homage to the Brolga Australia's principal dancing bird. Suspended like marionettes, the birds are sewn from waxed cotton and have stopped mid-ballet. They gesture call, response and mimicry.

OPENING: 11 February at 6pm

Composer and Musician, Bree Van Ryke has created an accompanying sound work. Bree’s piece will intermittently shock the dancing birds, with music inspired by the Brolga’s bold honking. This sacred bird has forever inspired stories and dance from Australia’s First Nations people, who in shared spirit see and feel it. Anna-Wili’s aim is to engineer a moment of contact with nature, in a way that emphasises similarity of form and consciousness shared by both humans and animals.
