C

oastline sought the opportunity to partner with the Education @ Glasshouse program following the launch of Cubs and Kickstart accounts, along with our Coastline Cubs School Visit Program. 2021 was a challenging year for all businesses throughout the community due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Glasshouse performances were affected by the pandemic with some of the scheduled events cancelled. Coastline’s partnership with the Glasshouse remained strong and is now able to assist the 2022 program to offer more shows and performance dates. The partnership continues to present opportunities to build positive relationships with our local schools and highlights our commitment to support education outside of the classroom and within the broader community. We understand the importance of giving students access to valuable learning experiences which inspire both creativity and innovation. As Principal Partner, this exciting opportunity allows us to play an important role in providing access for students to participate in the unique and creative events hosted within the program

which promotes cultural diversity. Coastline has been operating in Port Macquarie since 2001 and relocated to our current site within the Settlement City shopping centre in 2016. The Glasshouse is a premier destination showcasing world class productions in performing arts that boosts our local economy and tourism sector in the Greater Port Macquarie region. Coastline are excited to contribute to the longevity and sustainability of the Education @ Glasshouse program. - By Peter Townsend, General Manager

YOU ALREADY KNOW LIAM BENSON

You Already Know reflects the intuitive ways we collect and process our experiences, how they inform us, who we are culturally and the unspoken ways these memories are transferred and transmuted within relationships, amongst community, and between generations. Featuring new work created through community engagement during the artist’s digital residency, You Already Know reflects the complex perspectives we embrace and the unspoken ways we share our experiences with one another. Liam Benson was our 2021 invited Artist in Residence. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Liam’s residency has been redirected to the online world, and he is excited to be able to engage with our community digitally. “I'm interested in local community/cultural and personal story telling through body art, graffiti, local and personal iconography... A way of communicating and connecting with each other through imagery.” - Liam Benson

About the Artist: Liam Benson is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice incorporates performance, photography, video and textiles. Benson’s work explores identity and culture as a living dualistic process which is both informed by and subverts tradition, entrenched ideologies, popular iconography, art and media. Liam’s practice is informed by working collaboratively with diverse communities through an ongoing conversation about how culture, sub-culture and identity interrelate and evolve. His works are held in significant public and private collections including The MCA Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia, Artbank and Western Sydney University. The Artist in Residency Program supports the development of new work and connects contemporary artists with our community.

MATING DANCE

GLASSHOUSE PORT MACQUARIE PRESENTS

ADELAIDE WRITERS’ WEEK

ANNA-WILI HIGHFIELD

Mating Dance by Anna-Wili Highfield is an installation of courtship formations. The sculptures are an homage to the Brolga - Australia’s principal dancing bird. Suspended like marionettes, the birds are sewn from waxed cotton and have stopped mid-ballet. They gesture call, response and mimicry. Composer and Musician, Bree Van Ryke has created an accompanying sound work. Bree’s piece will intermittently shock the dancing birds, with music inspired by the Brolga’s bold honking. This sacred bird has forever inspired stories and dance from Australia’s First Nations people, who in shared spirit see and feel it. Anna-Wili’s aim is to engineer a moment of contact with nature, in a way that emphasises similarity of form and consciousness shared by both humans and animals.

About the Artist: Anna-Wili’s works explore the organic qualities and resistance of materials, generating a tension between the complex realism of form and the limitations and economy of the materials used. They represent life in an immediate way that conveys the energy, movement and physical character of different creatures. Her aim is to engineer a moment of contact with nature in a way that emphasises both the startling differences and similarities of human and animal forms and consciousness. The Gallery is dedicated to showcasing Australian contemporary arts practice, creating opportunities for contemporary artists to connect with our regional audiences and vice versa.

Adelaide Writers’ Week is Australia’s largest free* literary festival, offering both writers and readers a unique opportunity to spend time sharing ideas and literary explorations in a garden setting in Adelaide’s city centre. Each carefully selected program brings the world’s most celebrated established and emerging writers together for a week that delights, surprises and enlightens audiences. Each Adelaide Writer’s Week includes a broad selection of stimulating sessions livestreamed to partner locations around Australia. Over the years, Adelaide Writers’ Week has seen some of the world’s greatest writers and thinkers in conversation about literature, politics, poetry, current events, biography, the short story and much, much more. *when attending in person.

BLACK COCKATOO

Cross Curriculum Priorities - Australian and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures

BY GEOFFREY ATHERDEN DIRECTED BY WESLEY ENOCH

Issues and Concerns/Key Ideas - Language, Culture and Representations

Over 150 years ago, 13 brave Aboriginal men in Western Victoria picked up their cricket bats and embarked on a treacherous voyage to England and into the unknown – all in the name of sport. Risking illness and persecution, Australia’s first international cricket team – including Australia’s first Indigenous sporting hero, Johnny Mullagh – amazed the English crowds with astonishing talent, personality and grit. They should have returned to Australia as celebrated heroes. Instead they came back to find the world they once knew was no longer there.

Identity Colonisation

This is not just a story about cricket – this is story of strength, resistance, hope and possibility. Funny and incredibly moving, Black Cockatoo is a new artistic collaboration between iconic Australian writer Geoffrey Atherden (Mother and Son, Babakiueria) and former Sydney Festival Artistic Director Wesley Enoch (Black Diggers).

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

COURAGE TO CARE WORKSHOPS Courage to Care is a student-centred program conveying the messages of social tolerance and inclusion, and was developed by B’nai B’rith, the world’s oldest community service organisation, founded in 1843. The Courage to Care Schools Program emphasises the importance of standing up to racism, persecution and any form of prejudice, especially in relation to individuals who belong to minority groups. It is especially relevant to school students as they encounter media images of intolerance and prejudice, or when they experience or witness racism or bullying in their lives. The program focuses on remarkable individuals who had the courage to risk their lives and the lives of their families to save Jews during the Holocaust. They provide powerful role models of individuals, Upstanders, imbued with a sense of social justice coupled with strength of character. These stories are displayed with historical artefacts relevant to an Upstander story. The Program aims to instil in all who participate, the desire for a more harmonious society.

Stages 1 - 6 ....................................

A visual conversation that questions how we define a landscape, each artist drawing new ways to interpret and inform, whilst also seeing the landscape as a way to transcribe physiological space. Moments in Colour showcases the vibrancy and complexity that our landscapes provide and acknowledges how privileged we are to inhabit them. Schools to register their interest with dates/times confirmed in 2022. .................................... Delivered at schools. Available to schools that have booked to see a performance.

BASED ON THE BOOKS BY SHEENA KNOWLES & ROD CLEMENT WRITTEN FOR THE STAGE & DIRECTED BY EVA DI CESARE

The time has come for the Emus to tell the story, their way! The award-winning creative team from Monkey Baa Theatre Company are back with a brand-new take on another much-loved tale, Edward the Emu. More than an adaptation, this is a unique imagining of two beloved picture books, Edward the Emu and Edwina the Emu, combining the plights of both emus in one heartfelt, clever and funny new tale. Edward is bored with his lot. Being the only emu at the zoo has left him feeling glum and under the impression that the grass is greener in everyone else’s enclosure. Maybe being a seal, or a lion, or a snake might be a better option in life for a lonely bird? Convinced that the other creatures are more popular, Edward breaks ranks and goes to find the fun and along the way, finds Edwina! Written for the stage by Monkey Baa’s Artistic Director Eva Di Cesare (Diary of a Wombat, Josephine Wants to Dance) we follow the emus as they hilariously navigate their own feathered existential crises, seeking to find their place in the world. Meanwhile, unaware of the birds’ internal worlds, their human keepers are in hot pursuit to restore order to the zoo. The emus’ journey of hijinks and tenderness leads them to discover that the best thing you can be is... you!
