Confession and Absolution

Risen and rising Lord, we confess that too often we live as though we had not been given new life in you. We muddle after our own schemes. We follow after wayward leaders and cherish broken dreams. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we keep the good news of your resurrection to ourselves, hoard the blessings that you give and live as though we were still on the path of despair. Give us your Spirit, the spirit of new life, the spirit of joyful service, the spirit of loving care for all others around us. Make us truly Easter people in this broken world. Fill us with the Spirit so that we might overflow with the serving that proclaims your very presence with us. I have the honor and privilege, by the grace of God, of announcing to you the entire forgiveness of your sins. In Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and free—free to share the steadfast love of God with all. Amen.

Hymn of Response LSB480 He's Risen, He's Risen He's risen, He's risen, Christ Jesus, the Lord; He opened death's prison, the incarnate, true Word. Break forth, hosts of heaven, in jubilant song And earth, sea, and mountain their praises prolong. The foe was triumphant when on Calvary The Lord of creation was nailed to the tree. In Satan's domain did the hosts shout and jeer, For Jesus was slain, whom the evil ones fear. But short was their triumph, the Savior arose, And death, hell, and Satan He vanquished, HIs foes. The conquering Lord lifts His banner on high; He lives, yes, He lives, and will nevermore die. O, where is your sting, death? We fear you no more; Christ rose, and now open is fair Eden's door. For all our transgressions His blood does atone; Redeemed and forgiven, we now are His own. Then sing your hosannas and raise your glad voice; Proclaim the blest tidings that all may rejoice. Laud, honor, and praise to the Lamb that was slain: With Father and Spirit He ever shall reign.

Isaiah 25:6-9 On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

1 Corinthians 15:12-26 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

John 20:1-18 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to

them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ!

Hymn: LSB477 Alleluia, Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven Alleluia, alleluia! Hearts to heav'n and voices raise: Sing to God a hymn of gladness, Sing to God a hymn of praise; He who on the cross a victim For the world's salvation bledJesus Christ, the King of Glory, Now is risen from the dead.

Alleluia, Christ is risen! Death at last has met defeat: See the ancient pow'rs of evil In confusion and retreat; Once He died, and once was buried: Now He lives forevermore, Jesus Christ, the world's Redeemer, Whom we worship and adore.

Alleluia, alleluia! Glory be to God on high: Alleluia to the Savior Who has gained the victory; Alleluia to the Spirit, Fount of love and sanctity! Alleluia, alleluia To the Triune Majesty!

Sermon: Life Offering Prayers In your mercy, Hear us, Lord.

Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction May almighty God bless you on this Easter Day, and may he protect you against all sin. Through the resurrection of his Son, God granted us healing. May he fulfill his promises, and bless you with eternal life. You have mourned for Christ’s sufferings; now you celebrate the joy of his resurrection. May you come with joy to the feast which lasts forever. May almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen.

Closing Hymn

I know that my Redeemer lives What comfort this sweet sentence gives He lives, He lives, who once was dead He lives, my ever living head! He lives triumphant from the grave He lives eternally to save; He lives all-glorious in the sky, He lives exalted there on high. He lives to silence all my fears He lives to wipe away my tears; He lives to calm my troubled heart, He lives all blessings to impart. He lives, all glory to His name! He lives, my Jesus, still the same Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives, "I know that my Redeemer lives!"
