The goal of the Design Department is for learners to be able to execute original and innovative work. In their courses, they continually refine their skills and knowledge with regard to the MYP Design Cycle in order that they may develop a broad perspective of the use and application of technology in design.

Design 6 is an introductory course to design. Students become familiar and comfortable with their Chromebook.

Throughout the year students develop their skills and apply the design cycle to solve problems. In particular, students will: Investigate, Design, Create and Evaluate.

They will complete two full projects. First, a game using the MIT website SCRATCH. This will also be an introduction to coding and game design. Second they will use the Laser Cutter to make a useful wooden box. Students further develop their skills and knowledge with regard to the MYP Design Cycle. Students continue to refine their skills with regard to management of their own digital files, submitting work, using the Internet safely and ethically, and communicating with their teachers electronically. Students explore new ideas and concepts with both digital and materials in Design and other subject areas using 3D imaging, modelling and printing applications; developing presentation and interactive multi-media quizzes; graphic-editing tasks, and diorama creation. Students further refine their skills and knowledge with regard to the MYP Design Cycle to develop a broad perspective of the use and application of technology. Students further refine their graphic-editing skills designing Internet safety posters; creating original audio podcasts; re-designing and creating new pieces for board games, and finally, designing and creating solutions for a self-identified problem to finish off the year. Students hone their skills and knowledge with regard to the MYP Design Cycle and continue to follow and implement the various criteria of the MYP Design Cycle. Students use Audio and Video editing software to create a commercial for a subject of their choosing. For their second project, students design and create a useful object utilizing our 3D printers and/or our Laser Cutter.

At the end of this course students should be able to: identify and define a problem, write and follow a research plan, collect and analyze relevant information, construct a design brief, justify design specifications, develop a range of ideas and objectively choose the best, write a plan for the creation of their product, follow their plan documenting the process, evaluate their solution against their design specifications and the expectations of the intended use.

Students earn a Media Arts 10 credit. Students hone their skills and knowledge with regard to the MYP Design Cycle and continue to follow and implement the various criteria of the MYP Design Cycle. Students use 3D imaging software to create digital objects. Students will then import those objects into a virtual reality environment, which they will design and create.

Students earn a Digital Communications 11 credit.
