It's a great way to know more about the people we work with in a more casual way, and hopefully it brings us all closer together through our shared daily experiences. We will be sending out A Day in a Life interview emails periodically, so if you get one please just spend 5 minutes lling it out and sending it back. This way we can have a steady stream of features for the IRRI community. If you have any questions or comments about this you can reach us at internalcomm@irri.org. Thank you and we hope you enjoy this feature!

THE FUTURE IS FEMALE An inspiring woman farmer in Africa Africa is a land rich in agricultural resources, if one knows how to properly tap its potential. Emma Naluyima previously worked as a government veterinarian who gave up a stable salaried job to start her own piggery in 2006. Over the years, she used her knowledge and experimented with sustainable practices to grow her business not just into a successful farm, but also a veterinary clinic, school and training center, and a tourist attraction.
Her one-acre farm has a variety of crops, including a plantation of bananas and a vegetable garden of tomatoes, spinach, cucumber, potatoes, and greens; a piggery of 30 sows; 12 dairy cows; a ock of chickens; two shponds with tilapia and cat sh; and a snail farm that sells snail glue to cosmetic manufacturers. She practices sustainability by using animal dung for fertilizer, biofuel, and to grow maggot feed, saving up to 80% in operating costs.
Emma's achievements have earned her recognition and awards not just in Africa but all over the world. Watch her TED Talk video to know more of her inspiring story, or read more about her in this article.
