RUSSELL PETERS: THE GLOBAL KING OF LAUGHTER

COVER STORY

Uniting the globe with his sharp-witted observational comedy, Russell Peters has changed the conversation surrounding race and culture, shifting the narrative towards inclusivity. In this exclusive interview, Peters shares his incredible journey to becoming the Global King of Laughter, the challenges he faced along the way, and the advice he has for aspiring comics. By Bilal Aqeel Russell, we met you at the second edition of the Global Citizen Forum almost ten years ago in Toronto, where you performed for an audience of the world’s leading immigration specialists and changemakers striving for global mobility. We now find ourselves in Dubai for this reunion.

Your comedy often challenges stereotypes. How do you navigate humor around cultural differences while also breaking down barriers and promoting empathy? “A stereotype has to start somewhere. There must be more than one person who’s done this type of thing and more than one person who relates to that stereotype. That’s your jump-off point. Then, you consider what’s deeper and how you can make people understand each other better. It was never my intention to teach people through my comedy, but I guess subsequently, I did.”

As someone who has been an integral part of this transformative journey to now winning the Global Citizen Forum Award, tell us, what does global citizenship mean to you? “Even before the Global Citizen Forum, I always felt like a global citizen. I’m somehow defined by being an Indian guy from Canada, but I always felt like the rest of the world was also me.” You’ve been consistently listed by Forbes amongst the highest-paid comedians globally, the first comedian to sell out the Air Canada Centre, and the first to have a Netflix stand-up special. Where did your journey begin? Was there a pivotal moment in your life that inspired you to pursue comedy professionally? “I started doing stand-up comedy in 1989 when I’d just turned 19. At that time, I had no idea it would become what it did for me. I just knew that I didn’t want to work for anybody and that this was a natural thing for me to do. It’s just my personality and has always been an extension of who I am. So, here we are 34 years later, and with the Global Citizen Forum Award, it’s even better.” Coming from an immigrant family, what was it like growing up in Canada? How did your cultural background influence your comedic style and perspective? “My parents immigrated to Canada in 1965, and I was born there in 1970. Growing up in Canada is interesting because when you’re a brown guy in Canada in the seventies and eighties, you’re a minority. But then you’re Canadian, so you’re an outsider from America – so I’m a double outsider. That really gave me a unique perspective. I’ve never looked at things at the surface level; I’ve always had the mindset of “what was here first? How did this get here?” So, I think my comedy was shaped by growing up and dealing with different challenges in life, such as racism, and it was my outlet to try and get out of bad situations.” 21 SPECIAL EDITION DEC 2023

INTERVIEW

With so much happening in the world, both culturally and politically, humor is a force that has the power to unite us. In your experience, how does comedy serve as a vehicle for societal change or understanding, especially in the context of a global audience? “Comedy is the last bastion of truth out there. The news is skewed nowadays to fit different perspectives when there should be only one perspective – the truth. The truth is like poetry, and nobody likes poetry. I think that’s why people try to attack comedy now – because this is the last thing telling you what’s really happening. People don’t want to know the truth because they’re so self-involved that it has to fit their agenda. If it doesn’t, they won’t hear about it. Whether good or bad, people will skew whatever you say to suit their needs; you will be manipulated and marginalized. It’s happening to me now, and it’s been happening my whole career. People should hear what you say, not what they want to hear.” Cancel culture has affected a lot of comedians and other artists – has it had an impact on your material and creative process? “No, I’ve never been fazed by cancel culture because the younger people are doing it, and they aren’t my audience anymore. I’m 53 years old – my audience is generally 30 and older. It’s funny when somebody posts a clip of mine from 15 years ago and I see the young people jump on it and attack it. When I think about certain things I said early in my career, I can’t believe I thought it was funny. But at the time, it made sense. So, I laid the foundation for other comics not to have to do that. Everything progresses and evolves; we’re ever-changing as a species and as people.” As you said, people don’t accept things if it doesn’t fit their agenda. How do you think we can overcome that? “We’ve got to start getting back to being honest with each other. I think that’s one of the problems with cancel culture – it’s not about honesty; it’s about opinions. Everybody’s entitled to their opinion and the way they feel. However, you must find the middle ground and try to understand each other. That doesn’t mean you’ll change your opinion, but you now understand me better. It’s about understanding more than it is anything else.” When you perform, what is that one message that you’re trying to get across or want people to take away? “My ultimate goal has always been to make people laugh. I want people to come, laugh, and when they leave, I want them to feel like they had a good escape. That’s really what your job is as a comedian.”

22 SPECIAL EDITION DEC 2023

As someone who’s broken many records, what advice would you give to aspiring comedians or artists navigating the entertainment industry? “I always tell people, don’t ever get in the business because you think you’ll be rich and famous. Get into it because it’s something inside you. My driving force was always to make people laugh and be the best at it every night. The money and fame eventually came. Now that it’s here, do I want to lose it? No, obviously not. You don’t stay at the top forever, it’s just an improbability. So, you’ve got to be true to yourself more than your craft. The more you are true to yourself, the craft follows. I feel like I’m just me on stage. With a microphone, it’s a slightly amplified version of me, but I’m always myself.”

AURELIA FIGUEROA: NAVIGATING SUSTAINABILITY ACROSS BORDERS AND INDUSTRIES

INTERVIEW

Can you share more about your journey from studying politics, philosophy, economics, international affairs, and journalism in the US, Europe, and India to working in sustainability? When I went to university from 2000-2009, there was not, at least to my knowledge, any study program directly on the subject of sustainability. I already had a strong interest in related subjects, such as environmental protection or social justice so I was keen to develop my profession in this direction. And I would venture to say that these studies allowed me to have a good basis to begin to approach sustainability. After my studies, I was keen to be a part of sustainable transformation and I had the opportunity to work at the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action as a Bosch Fellow. It was an extraordinary chance to be closely involved in climate policy and from here my career evolved in the private sector at Siemens, and then again in the public sector at the German Institute for Development and Sustainability Studies, one of the top think tanks on the subject of sustainable development globally. It has continued since then mostly in the private sector, with one more stint in international diplomacy in the middle. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to work in sustainability, as it encapsulates so many, if not somehow all, of the global challenges we collectively face as a society today. One of the parts I treasure most about my job is the opportunity to engage with my peers globally in values-based discussions in order to consciously create together our future with sustainable principles closely in mind. What motivated you to pursue an internship at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Switzerland? How did that experience influence your career path? I was motivated by the opportunity to have a first international professional work experience and at an organization that is researching key trends at the intersection of trade, economy, development, environment and other topics. The key influence I took away from this experience was the awareness of the interconnectedness of policy issues and the practical, human, firm level impacts of policies. Could you elaborate on your work during the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship in Germany, especially your involvement in the German Energiewende? How did this experience shape your passion for sustainability? At the time that I worked on the topic of the energy transition, or Energiewende, as a Robert Bosch Foundation Fellow I was most concerned with the analysis of national policies and strategies to manage energy transitions, both within Germany, and researching examples from other countries.

This experience shaped my passion for sustainability as it opened the multidimensionality of energy transitions as they are so all encompassing for society – energy is at the end involved in nearly all of our daily actions whether at home, in the workplace, or in transit. So it really gets to the core of so many human behaviors and human-built environment interfaces. It is a fascinating field to work in and this ongoing appreciation for the subject highly contributed to my passion for sustainability. You’ve worked in various sectors, from government to private companies and research institutions. How do these diverse experiences inform your approach to sustainability initiatives? Sustainability requires collaboration across all sectors of society to be effective. And certainly, at Breitling this is the approach we take, by engaging across sectors in order to better understand and contribute to the systems in which we are present. I am glad to be able to reference my experience in my current collaboration, while continually learning from my peers and from the systems in which we engage along the way. As the Global Director of Sustainability at Breitling, how do you plan to use your cross-sectoral experience to develop an industry-leading sustainability strategy that aligns with Breitling’s pillars of Product, Planet, People, Process, and Prosperity? So far, I have been able to use my experience in order to effectively facilitate an ongoing and much broader process of understanding how we can best contribute to a shift in the status quo within our sphere of influence. Already today, we have decided together – and with the input of our stakeholders – to fundamentally shift key value chains in order to align to our values and realize positive social and environmental impact. Meanwhile, we have been able to embody one of our key principles, transparency, along the way, and thereby reflect our intention to be a part of a transformation that involves open and accessible communication to our stakeholders. We recognize this is an ongoing process of dialogue and exchange and that these are fundamental aspects of us being able to embody sustainable transformation.

INTERVIEW

26 SPECIAL EDITION DEC 2023

INTERVIEW

What are some of the sustainability challenges and opportunities you foresee in the luxury watch industry, and how do you plan to address them in your role at Breitling? Raw materials sourcing is one of the most pressing issues in the watchmaking industry, particularly in the area of materials that could potentially originate from areas of conflict or circumstances involving human rights abuses or environmental degradation such as gold or diamonds. At Breitling, our approach is to do everything we can within our sphere of influence for social and environmental issues alike and indeed considering both hand in hand. Since 2017, Breitling’s vision of neoluxury – namely, luxury that is inclusive, casual and sustainable, has been at the heart of the brand. Now, we seek to clearly position ourselves as an industry leader in this defining topic of our time. We believe you cannot talk about sustainability if you cannot talk about origin, which is why we have sought to address these issues by providing transparency and traceability along our supply chain, including for key raw materials such as artisanal and small-scale gold and lab-grown diamonds. Based on this, we are able to work with our suppliers hand-in-hand and support them in addressing social and environmental topics alike. In your extensive career, can you share an example of a project or initiative that you are particularly proud of in the sustainability field? I am particularly proud of the transformations we have been able to collectively achieve at Breitling thus far. It’s only been three years since we have formalized our approach to sustainability and the tangible deliverables which we have already brought to the fore – thanks to the engagement of numerous teams both at Breitling and beyond – have been publicly acknowledged as being transformational and visionary for the industry. This is really a testament to our personal commitments to the matter and the entrepreneurial spirit we embody – imagine being able to realize such change in a company that has been operating for very nearly 140 years! Based on this, I am really excited for all that is ahead of us. How do you see the role of sustainability evolving in the coming years, and what role do you see Breitling playing in shaping the future of sustainability in the industry? In all the years I have worked in sustainability, that is, over a decade, I have never experienced evolution at such a fast pace.

However, I think one of the key aspects of evolution is the ongoing importance of multidimensional approaches – collaboration across sectors and with unlikely allies is going to be essential if we are to increase the scale and scope with which we are addressing the challenges and opportunities with which we are being confronted. I see the chance for Breitling to in turn play many roles in shaping the future of sustainability in the industry. First, within the luxury industry, we have an important role in contributing to societal notion of status and being a part of defining these to include concepts related to sustainability. Secondly, we have a chance to identify new avenues to drive sustainable progress within our sphere of influence. This means along value chains and globally. As someone with a background in international diplomacy and social entrepreneurship, how do you balance the global perspective with the specific needs and goals of a company like Breitling? I think the key approach that we have taken to enable us to balance the global perspective with our needs and goals is to operate at the human level. Being able to personally exchange with my counterparts across the supply chain has helped us to fundamentally understand how we can be a part of sustainable transformation. A great example of this comes from our transition to lab-grown diamonds from selected producers. Through this, we have been able to directly know the communities from which we source and to develop meaningful relationships. Inspired by our interactions, we have developed in concert with Amani Institute a tailored program in the western Indian state of Gujarat that will support 40 social entrepreneurs with a focus on women’s economic empowerment and social entrepreneurship for economic development. Meanwhile, our transition to lab-grown diamonds is addressing so many challenges associated with mined diamond sourcing, especially in our industry, where traceability is simply not feasible at scale for the small stones we source. Through this we can genuinely speak to the social and environmental impacts along the value chain, be they human rights, community engagement, climate, biodiversity, water, or any other range of impacts.

And thank goodness – these are urgent topics and the pace uptick is absolutely essential. Based on this, it is hard to anticipate how it will continue to evolve going forward.

FASHION FOR A REASON, NOT A SEASON GC MAGAZINE’S EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH EVA KRUSE, THE CHIEF GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT OFFICER OF LEADING SUSTAINABLE FASHION BRAND PANGAIA BY BILAL AQEEL PHOTO BY LIZETTE MIKKELSEN DRORI

INTERVIEW

From founding the Global Fashion Summit and launching it alongside the UN Climate Change Conference COP15 in 2009, creating the Global Fashion Agenda to mobilize global leadership towards positive change and responsible innovation in fashion, to founding the Copenhagen Fashion Week and now as the Chief Global Engagement Officer at PANGAIA, a brand that is revolutionizing sustainable manufacturing practices in apparel, Eva Kruse has been a pioneer in promoting sustainability in fashion since 2007, successfully putting it on the global political agenda. As a global voice for sustainability in fashion, what was it that made you realize that the industry was in dire need of change? “I think when I first joined the fashion industry, coming from the media side first, I was just fascinated by the creativity and the products; everything that people normally enjoy about it. But I have two very politically engaged parents, and they always brought me up knowing that I had to contribute to the world with more than just improving people’s bottom line – it was more about how you can make an impact and difference for others. That always stayed with me and made me question and challenge how things were behind the scenes. In the early 2000s, we didn’t know much about the impacts of the fashion industry, and people didn’t talk about the issues of environmental and social impact; so, when I started digging, I couldn’t find many stats or facts. At that time, the term sustainability was not used, rather we called it corporate social responsibility; and it was mostly something a big company would have. Usually, it would be one person sitting far away from the executives, mainly to risk mitigate. What we knew at the time was that fashion was one of the world’s largest industries, so naturally there had to be some implications, and we knew there had been some issues with child labour. When former United States Vice President Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ came out in 2006, it was one of the first popular public facing documentaries that really put the climate crisis on the agenda; that struck further interest with me and made me want to dig deeper into it.

How is PANGAIA actively forging a connection between sustainability and fashion to pave the way for a more responsible and ethical future in clothing production? “We look at the material input because the material is where the biggest environmental footprint of the industry lies. Looking at the materials, we approach it from two sides; with material innovation and science that can replace harmful materials with exciting, new and better ones, as well as taking inspiration from nature. In today’s world, people talk a lot about circularity as a concept, but Mother Nature has been doing it always. We see nature as our biggest ally; mimicking and learning from it has been a big part of the inspiration for us. For instance, cotton is a very land-intensive crop. It’s one of the most thirsty crops in the world; it has a very high intake of water, and it’s also one of the most pesticide-intensive crops. I think a lot of people think it’s good because it’s a natural fiber, but really, it isn’t if you look at the bigger ecosystem. At PANGAIA, we’ve done three things in terms of cotton. For virgin fibers, we’ve had organic and are now transitioning into regenerative – that refers to the practices that are applied when you grow the cotton; everything from not tilling the soil, to how you treat the biodiversity around it and avoiding pesticides altogether. In addition to that, we have a lot of recycled cotton and we’re looking into optimizing the usage of fiber that’s already there. And then thirdly, we’ve been looking at alternatives to cotton. We’ve found extremely exciting waste materials that include fruits and plant waste, or even nettle and hemp that you can blend with organic cotton to make an incredible denim fabric. When it comes to fossil fuel based materials, which is 60% of the industry, they’re made basically of plastics and synthetic fibers that will stay in our environment for a very long time, even if they’re recycled. That’s where we really need our scientists to develop new inputs for bio-based fibers that are durable, have all the competitive advantages of other fibers but are also biodegradable and where the input isn’t toxic.”

That’s when we had the first convenings with the Danish fashion industry to start involving them to discuss our sustainability footprint. I remember at that time businesses were not really ready to talk about it much, mostly because they didn’t know. They had some idea of their supply chain, maybe to the second tier, but definitely not all the way to the field – they had no idea where all the elements in their products came from. So, it clearly showed that we had a long way to go. And we’ve come a long way, but there’s still much more to do.”

Since its inception, PANGAIA has been at the forefront of innovation in sustainable fashion – what has been its proudest achievement so far and what does the future of the brand look like? “I’d say we’re most proud of having changed the agenda in fashion because we came into the world wanting to create industry transformation through material innovation, driven with sustainability at the heart of it. We wanted to be a blueprint for building a business model that is, what we call, Earth positive.

Cotton is the most widely used natural fiber for manufacturing clothes and accounts for about 30% of all garments – the world’s current cotton production is leading to significant levels of environmental depletion. The production of wool and leather products raises questions for animal welfare. For years, the fashion industry’s apparel manufacturing practices have been a cause of concern for our planet’s future.

It’s both a philosophy and strategy to innovate in the way we do business, the way we produce products, the way we we consume them and what we do with them after we’re done – to essentially create a business model that gives back more than it takes.

29 SPECIAL EDITION DEC 2023

INTERVIEW

Our focus sits in a triangle between combining science and purpose with good design. We understand and appreciate that in the world of apparel and fashion, of course, the product has to be super interesting and appealing. You wear it, right? So, it becomes part of you, and who you are or want to be. And I think that intersection between those three has been really exciting to explore and to actually see that it is positive to change the narrative and and to inspire others to do better. We’re very grateful for the response we’ve had from both our customers and the industry since we launched. We came at the right time because people were ready for something new, and wanted to be able to find products that are made in the best way possible. It has just been exciting to see how interested people are in finding products that you can stand behind, not only for the look and feel, but their quality and the values they stand for. A product made for a reason and not just for a season. Something of lasting value.” 70% of the 100 crops that feed 90% of the world depend on bees and other pollinators – we must protect and save them to save ourselves. Can you comment on how humanity’s actions are endangering the world’s biodiversity and ecosystems, and how PANGAIA’s ‘Bee the Change’ movement is sparking a butterfly effect to address this threat? “Back in 2020, PANGAIA embarked on a journey to save the bees and other pollinators, and we set up a fund called Bee The Change to support their protection. But more help is needed to save our pollinator friends, so we want to increase the scope and impact of the campaign. We’re inviting other businesses and organizations to join us on this mission to create a global campaign to raise awareness and funds, and change our behavior towards nature. Although the initiative is called Bee The Change, it’s important to underline that it’s not just the bees we aim to protect, it’s the bigger group of pollinators, which includes hummingbirds, butterflies, bats and flies, and many more. Essentially, they represent the bigger ecosystem of nature and are the guardians of biodiversity. Unfortunately, manmade actions have brought our ecosystems to a near collapse. With the climate crisis on people’s minds, most businesses are looking at how can they lower their carbon footprint and emissions. While that is a tremendously important piece of the puzzle, the ecosystem and nature in which we exist is as much as risk. Some of it due to climate change, but some of it also due to the way we’re extracting and exploiting nature. The way a lot of our agricultural systems are set up, we’re basically taking from nature and not giving anything back. We’re monocropping it, which means that we have the same kind of crop on the fields, for example cotton. If you don’t have shifting crops and you don’t protect the natural biodiversity, you will, at some point, extract so much from nature that it can’t give anything back. Nature actually holds the ability to sequester and hold carbon for us, to be our ally – but not if we keep torturing Mother Earth the way we do. 30 SPECIAL EDITION DEC 2023

The use of pesticides is killing pollinators, pollutes our environment, ends up in our food and essentially, in us. That’s where a lot of the pollinators are at threat. What we really want people to appreciate is that we’re a part of nature, we’re not apart from nature. Humans are part of a bigger ecosystem. We forget that sometimes because we live on bricks and we don’t really connect with nature – we find our groceries, fruits and vegetables on the counter, we put them in a basket and go home. We are living in the age of the Anthropocene, we’ve made the mess we’re in, but we also have the power to reverse the damage and bring balance back to our planet and nature – that’s what we want to propose with our Bee the Change campaign. By focusing our biodiversity campaign on the bees and the other lovely pollinators, we can tell a story that is simpler, more relatable and tangible to many of us. We can link to things we love, give people concrete actions to take, and then raise funds to support nature restoration, field projects and all the efforts being made to protect our planet and our pollinators.” In a world that is moving rapidly towards greater interconnectedness, you are one of the leaders in a brand that is committed to shaping a more responsible, ethical and sustainable future. Do you consider yourself a Global Citizen, and do you believe that if we come together, we could change the world for the better? “Yes, 100%. That’s what I live by every single day. Considering where the world is right now with what’s happening in Israel, Gaza, Ukraine, and in so many other places that we’ve forgotten about, with the climate crisis, I think we have a tendency to lose hope as individuals. I do understand why people sometimes feel a sense of disconnect. But if we actually came together, we’d feel empowered just by being with others who also want to do good. That’s actually why I travel to the different COPs and other global events, because it reassures me that there are more people driving and striving for the same goals. It’s why I work with my colleagues here at PANGAIA, because we do profoundly believe that the collective actions of the many is what is needed. We need to bring back the sense of individual empowerment, that it actually matters what you do, what you say, how you spend your time, and it definitely matters where you spend your money. If we all realize that “I actually matter,” then I think we would consider our actions differently. There are a lot of people who think, “does it really matter if I recycle?” It definitely does! And if we all recycle, it will massively matter. Every little action counts. The butterfly effect is one good metaphor, but also thinking about how bees work together in a hive, they all provide a little piece of the puzzle, but together, they have a massive impact. Coming together, I believe, is really critical. So, it is definitely how we at PANGAIA see the world, and why we want to rally people behind Bee The Change movement. I would hope that more people out there came to that sense of connectivity with others even across borders, and realized that we do need to think and act as global citizens.”

ADEL MARDINI: PILOTING THE FLIGHT TO SUSTAINABILITY IN AVIATION FROM BEING A BUS DRIVER IN DAMASCUS TO FOUNDING ONE OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN BUSINESS AVIATION, JETEX PRESIDENT AND CEO ADEL MARDINI EMBODIES THE FUNDAMENTAL VALUES OF GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP. IN AN INDUSTRY KNOWN FOR ITS MASSIVE CARBON FOOTPRINT, JETEX IS LEADING THE PATH TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY.

BY BILAL AQEEL

INTERVIEW

Please share your remarkable journey with us. What helped you stay motivated all these years, and do you have any advice for our readers and members of the Global Citizen Forum? “My career began when my father employed me as a bus driver for a kindergarten school he owned. That was my first ever job, and I loved it. It also taught me one of the most important lessons in hospitality very early on: patience. I then moved on to the Damascus airport, driving the crew and passengers on the tarmac. From carrying their bags to everything conciergerelated, I did it all. A job like this teaches you a lot about people; you learn what they want, their requirements, what they’re suffering from, and their likes and dislikes. This gave me tremendous experience, and that’s where my journey began. Following that, I came to Dubai to build my company, which is my favorite city in the world. We were just 3 employees with a couple of laptops back then. From there, we’ve grown to 800 employees in 39 countries, and now, Jetex has become one of the top 5 brands in business aviation. What motivated me all these years is my ambition to constantly keep growing and improving, and I’m incredibly proud of these achievements. The company is in great shape and it’s because we’ve always worked so well as a team. Everyone in my team, from those who stayed with the company and even those who left, they’ve all contributed to its success. You’ve said in the past that “at airports, you are a passenger. But at Jetex, you are a guest.” That is such an eloquent way to describe the difference between flying commercial and flying private. As the visionary behind Jetex, what made you start the company, and what is your opinion on the concept of global mobility? What makes the Jetex experience stand out compared to other players in the industry? “In my view, Jetex is not an aviation or hospitality brand but a luxury product. A presidential suite will set you back $1520,000 per night – when you fly private, this is how much you pay per hour. That shows just how expensive this product is and how it targets a very niche client base. Our clients are celebrities, government officials, and Heads of State; in my opinion, they all deserve a full-service experience. The pandemic has propelled us into a new era of mobility. Since 2021, 70% of the first and business-class market has shifted to business aviation. For us, that was massive because we gained a huge number of loyal newcomers to the market. Even though first-class seats are excellent, the reason people won’t go back to flying commercial is the terminal – with Jetex, you have the privilege of coming to the terminal 10 minutes before departure. That makes all the difference in the world. The concept of Jetex is based on one fundamental idea – to continue the whole journey. Our clients stay at 5-star hotels, live in penthouses, spend their leisure time on yachts, and get chauffeured in luxury cars. When flying, they expect the same level of excellence, so it only makes sense for them to step into a private jet. At our terminals, we strive to maintain that connectivity with everything else in their lives.”

With COP28 – the largest UN climate change conference – taking place in the region, how is Jetex promoting the use of sustainable aviation fuel within the industry, and could you tell us about your ‘Fly Net Zero’ commitment? “Fly Net Zero is the commitment of the aviation industry to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. To achieve this goal, Jetex advocates using sustainable aviation fuel – a renewable alternative to traditional fossil-based fuel. This is crucial in reducing our carbon footprint and will bring a tremendous positive change in terms of emissions. In line with this commitment, we operate presently on a 40-60 ratio between SAF and traditional oil-based fuel respectively, and we’ve also grown to become one of the major providers of SAF in business aviation. We are also now working closely with partners like Shell to make SAF widely available to our clients. While it’s been challenging because of a lack of market supply, Jetex is the only provider of SAF in the UAE, along with Emirates Airlines, which I think is a significant indicator of our position in the market. Moreover, since 2022, we’ve also partnered with the Berlin Neuhardenberg Airport and developed the world’s first Pure Green Fixed Base Operator, invested in all-electric aircraft and advanced technologies that further reduce aviation emissions, and continue to support the development of hydrogen as an alternative fuel source.” What is your vision for the future of Jetex? As we believe that Jetex is a luxury product, we don’t intend to keep the brand limited to business aviation. In the near future, we see ourselves expanding our network to offer yacht services, as that is a service demanded by most of our clients as well. While yachts are used primarily for leisure, both yachts and private jets fall under the same category and are enjoyed by the same people. So, it’s only a matter of time before we enter this market, as this will finally complete the entire chain of services required by our client base. Lastly, what does global citizenship mean to you? With so much instability in the world, I think global citizenship stands for gathering the best minds and the most influential people to tackle one pressing question: “how do we make the world a better place?” This concept is not so much about citizenship as it is about connecting people and key decisionmakers and building a sustainable future. Without connection, we cannot do anything, and this is precisely what the Global Citizen Forum is offering to the world. Being part of this movement brings me immense pride. I look forward to exploring and advancing the conversation surrounding sustainability in aviation, so we can collectively put forward actionable steps for a positive future.

The monolithic panel design absorbs horizontal stresses, and the materials used offer up to 240 minutes of fire resistance. Our durability is comparable to any other construction system based on steel and concrete. In terms of architectural flexibility, how does Xpanel accommodate different design needs? The Xpanel system is incredibly versatile, accommodating a wide range of architectural designs from single-family homes to multi-storey buildings of any kind (residential, offices, hospitality, schools, etc.). Its flexibility allows for any kind of creative and diverse architectural expressions. How does Xpanel impact the overall construction timeline compared to traditional methods? Xpanel significantly reduces the actual construction time by up to 50% compared to traditional methods or precast technologies. Not only this, but the speed of installation also comes with a significant reduction in the workforce needed. Can Xpanel be considered a cost-effective solution for builders and developers? Absolutely! Xpanel’s efficient use of materials and reduced construction time lead to substantial savings in both material and labour costs, making it a cost-effective solution for a range of construction projects. In fact, after beginning activities in diverse countries worldwide, such as the USA, Spain, KSA, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Ukraine, and Benin, we can confirm that our building technology is not only the best and most sustainable technically speaking but is also the most affordable and efficient worldwide. What has been the market response to Xpanel, especially from industry leaders? The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Industry leaders and companies globally, including some of the most prestigious architectural firms worldwide, are recognising the benefits of Xpanel, with many adopting it as a standard in their projects. As an example of success, within 15 months from the activation of the first factory producing Xpanel Building Tech, we have been tested and selected in 8 countries as the preferred building technology for top industry leaders in all those countries. THE ART OF TIME: JAEGER-LECOULTRE`S REVERSO TRIBUTE ENAMEL HOKUSAI A HARMONIOUS MARRIAGE OF SWISS CRAFT AND JAPANESE HERITAGE

For those who have an appreciation for horology, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is no stranger. As the world’s

In a reverent nod to East meets West, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s latest Reverso Tribute Enamel timepieces are a celebration of cultural confluence and horological finesse. The 2023 collection pays homage to Katsushika Hokusai, Japan’s foremost ukiyo-e painter, whose art transcended the pleasures of Edo Japan to embrace nature’s sublime beauty.

The two miniature enamel renditions of Hokusai’s “The Waterfall at Ono on the Kisokaido Road” and “The Waterfall Where Yoshitsune Washed his Horse at Yoshino in Yamato Province” are not mere reproductions; they are heartfelt tributes that capture the essence of Hokusai’s mastery in a watch form. These works, part of Hokusai’s “A Tour of the Waterfalls of the Provinces,” are meticulously brought to life by the Métiers Rares™ artisans through a labor-intensive process involving the Geneva technique of enameling. The complexity of the task is evident: it requires 80 hours to apply and fire the 14 layers of enamel necessary for each painting. This dedication ensures the vividness of Hokusai’s original colors and the precision of details on a scale one-tenth of the original. The challenge extends to the cartouches—each caption is hand-written on a microscopic scale yet remains perfectly legible, a testament to the artisans’ dexterity. The front dials contrast with the elaborate artistry at the back. Their simplicity, featuring faceted appliqué hour markers and Dauphine hands, belies the intricate guilloché work beneath. The Waterfall at Ono dial features a barleycorn pattern, while the Waterfall at Yoshino dial has a lozenge pattern with 800 lines, each crafted with rigorous attention to detail. Encapsulating Jaeger-LeCoultre’s philosophy of art and culture within horology, these new Reverso Tribute Enamel timepieces, limited to ten per series, offer a rare opportunity for collectors to embody a piece of art history on their wrist, marrying the ethereal beauty of Hokusai’s waterfalls with the timeless elegance of La Grande Maison’s craftsmanship. 39 SPECIAL EDITION DEC 2023

The bezel’s frosted finish and bold relief markings catch the light with a luster that’s as bright as Olympic gold. The quick-release mechanism, a new addition to the Seamaster bracelet, provides versatility while maintaining the watch’s classic aesthetic. Complementing the watch are five Olympic-themed NATO straps, each emblazoned with Paris 2024 insignia in the iconic Olympic ring colors. While these straps command a premium, their unique designs and the exceptional quality of Omega NATOs might just justify the extra cost for enthusiasts. The ceramic dial of the “Paris 2024” Special Edition subtly differs from its predecessors, featuring Moonshine Gold indices with SuperLumiNova, and hands that bear the Paris 2024 Olympic flame logo. The dial’s wave pattern, now in positive relief, lends a dynamic texture that brings the ocean’s vitality to the wrist. Powered by the Omega Calibre 8800, a CoAxial Master Chronometer movement, this watch offers impeccable precision and reliability. The caseback, too, is a canvas for craftsmanship, with a Moonshine Gold Paris 2024 medallion set against a frosted steel backdrop, secured by Omega’s Naiad Lock system to ensure perfect alignment. While not explicitly limited in number, its exclusive availability at Omega’s Paris boutiques adds to its allure, making it a coveted piece for aficionados and Olympic fans alike.

This timepiece is a carefully crafted homage, encapsulating the essence of the 1935 Radiomir prototype in its design and functionality. Encased in a 45mm polished steel cushion-shaped shell, the watch exhibits a timeless charm that is both bold and understated. The design pays tribute to the original’s distinctive features, such as the cone-shaped crown that facilitated easy adjustment even with gloved hands—a necessity for the Italian frogman commandos during the Second World War. The PAM01385 stands out with its matte brown dial, a colour choice that is as unique as it is historic, paying homage to the earthy tones that are synonymous with military equipment from the era. The hollowed-out indices and the use of Arabic numerals at 12, 3, and 6 positions remain faithful to the vintage aesthetic. In low-light conditions, the watch comes alive as the beige Super-LumiNova® coating illuminates a bright green, a feature that not only enhances legibility but also serves as a nod to the Radiomir’s original use of radium-based luminescent material. At the heart of the PAM01385 is Panerai’s in-house P.6000 calibre, a testament to the brand’s commitment to in-house mechanical prowess. This hand-wound movement is designed for longevity and reliability, boasting a three-day power reserve—a feature that would have been invaluable to naval divers on extended missions. The incorporation of this calibre is a nod to the brand’s evolution from a military supplier to a manufacturer of some of the most sophisticated timepieces in the world. The timepiece is finished with a dark brown Scamosciato calf leather strap, which features beige topstitching that complements the dial. This choice of strap not only enhances the vintage military feel of the watch but also offers a comfortable, durable fit that is expected of a timepiece designed for action. The Radiomir Officine PAM01385 is a product of Panerai’s rich history and its evolution into a brand that is revered in both the military and luxury watchmaking worlds. From its inception as a supplier of precision instruments for the Italian Royal Navy to becoming a status symbol on the wrists of celebrities like Sylvester Stallone, Panerai has maintained its reputation for producing robust and distinctive watches. HOROLOGICAL MACHINE Nº11 ARCHITECT: A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME AND SPACE MB&F`S TIMEPIECE TRANSCENDS MERE HOROLOGY TO EMBRACE ARCHITECTURAL BRILLIANCE In an era where the concept of timekeeping is incessantly challenged, MB&F’s Horological Machine Nº11 Architect emerges as a groundbreaking fusion of horology and architecture. Inspired by Le Corbusier’s philosophy that a house is a living machine, MB&F transcends traditional watchmaking, creating a timepiece that isn’t just worn but is experienced and inhabited. The House That Max Built: A Symbiosis of Form and Function The journey of Horological Machine Nº11 Architect began with Maximilian Büsser’s fascination with the avantgarde architecture of the 1960s, a time when buildings transformed from mere structures to embodiments of humanistic concepts. Büsser envisioned a watch not as a time-telling device but as a living space, a habitat for the wrist. At the core of HM11 lies the central flying tourbillon, a beacon under a sapphire crystal dome, reminiscent of the grand clerestory windows of ancient temples. This central room is flanked by four parabolic extensions, each serving a distinct purpose: telling time, displaying power reserve, measuring temperature, and setting time. The house-like structure is rotatable, offering varying views and interactions, much like exploring different rooms in a building. A Fusion of Art and Engineering: The Birth of a Concept Laboratory MB&F, since its inception in 2005, has positioned itself not merely as a watchmaker but as a laboratory where horological concepts are born. Under Büsser’s leadership, MB&F has redefined the boundaries of traditional watchmaking, creating pieces that are a blend of artistic expression and mechanical wizardry. Each Horological Machine, including the Nº11 Architect, is a testament to this ethos. These timepieces are not just about keeping time but about marking moments in life. They are wearable stories, narratives that intertwine with the lives of their wearers. The Architectural Essence: Blending Space and Time MB&F’s Horological Machine Nº11 Architect represents a unique blend of architecture and watchmaking. The case, resembling a miniaturized building, is a marvel of design and craftsmanship. Crafted from titanium and sapphire crystal, the case echoes the playful, organic forms of mid-20th-century architecture. Its curvilinear shape is not only an aesthetic triumph but also a technical feat, showcasing MB&F’s mastery in machining challenging materials. The watch’s engine, the heart of HM11, is a marvel of efficiency and power. It combines manual and automatic winding methods, offering an impressive power reserve. The flying tourbillon, a signature of MB&F, asserts its presence, not just as a timekeeping component but as a piece of kinetic art. MB&F’s Legacy and Future: Beyond Horology MB&F’s journey, from the first Horological Machine to the Nº11 Architect, is marked by innovation and creativity. The brand has not only created watches but has also ventured into creating mechanical art pieces in collaboration with other artists and craftsmen. The MB&F M.A.D.Galleries, located in major cities worldwide, are not just stores but galleries where these mechanical art pieces are displayed. They are spaces where watchmaking and art converge, where visitors can experience the fusion of time, art, and mechanics. A Living Machine on the Wrist The Horological Machine Nº11 Architect is more than a watch; it is a living, breathing entity that encapsulates the essence of time and space. It is a testament to MB&F’s vision of horology not just as a science of timekeeping but as an art form that interacts with and enhances our experience of life. In this masterpiece, MB&F has not only told time but has also created a space where time is lived and cherished.

THE AURORA: A DANISH DELIGHT IN SUPERCAR ENGINEERING ZENVO UNVEILS HYBRID MARVELS, THE AGIL AND TUR

48 SPECIAL EDITION DEC 2023

AUTOMOTIVE

In the rarefied air of supercar supremacy, Zenvo, the Danish boutique carmaker, has once again sent ripples through the auto industry with its latest offering: the hybrid V-12 Aurora. Unveiled at Monterey Car Week, the Aurora comes in two distinct flavours: the track-devouring Agil and the grand touring Tur, with horsepower options that will make even the most jaded enthusiast’s heart race. Monocoque Magic: The Lightest, Mightiest Zenvo Yet Crafted around a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, the Aurora claims the throne as Zenvo’s lightest and most potent road car to date. The heart of this beast is a Mahle Powertrain-developed, quad-turbocharged 6.6-liter V-12, a masterpiece of engineering that revs to a sky-touching 9800 rpm and delivers a mighty 1250 horsepower. The ‘hot-V’ configuration—where turbochargers snuggle between the cylinder banks—is an architectural delight, ensuring minimal lag and maximal power delivery. Dual Personalities: Agil vs. Tur The Aurora presents a dualistic nature: the Agil is the more untamed variant, rear-wheel driven, with a single electric motor adding 200 hp to the tally for a total of 1450 hp. Meanwhile, the Tur variant embraces all-wheel drive, with two additional electric motors at the front wheels, culminating in a staggering 1850 hp and 1254 pound-feet of torque. Mechanical Symphony: Gearboxes and Differentials A seven-speed gearbox, intertwined with the rear-mounted electric motor, directs this symphony of power. In the Tur, gear shifts are a smooth waltz, while in the Agil, they’re a robust tango. The electronic differential and front motors’ torque-vectoring system elevate the drive to an art form. Aesthetic Allure: The Agil and Tur Visuals Visually, the Agil and Tur are distinct; the Tur is svelte and sleek, while the Agil is festooned with aerodynamic appendages. The Agil’s performance numbers are track-star worthy, with a 0-62 mph sprint in 2.5 seconds, while the Tur’s slipstreamed design enables it to achieve 60 mph in just 2.3 seconds, both reaching stratospheric top speeds. The tale of the DeLorean DMC-12 is as tumultuous as it is brief; an automotive shooting star that blazed across the cultural sky, embedding itself in the hearts of enthusiasts before its abrupt disappearance. Yet, the legend endured, gaining immortal status on the silver screen with “Back to the Future.” Now, a phoenix is rising from the ashes of history, promising a revival of the DeLorean spirit — this time, with a modern twist. Resurrecting the Dream: The DeLorean’s Electric Resurgence The DeLorean Motor Company, long the custodian of the original’s legacy, has switched lanes, heralding the arrival of the Alpha5. This electric successor boasts a robust 100-kwh battery with a range surpassing 300 miles per charge. It’s not just about endurance; the Alpha5 is swift, with acceleration from 0 to 88 mph in a mere 4.4 seconds, a knowing nod to its cinematic heritage. Collaboration for Innovation: A Design Legacy Reimagined The task of following up an icon is daunting. Thus, DeLorean partnered with the famed ItalDesign Giugiaro. Together, they’ve woven a rich tapestry of what might have been, creating a lineage of fictional successors, culminating in the Alpha5. This is not merely a sequel to the DMC-12; it’s the result of an evolutionary process, retaining the iconic gullwing doors while embracing the essence of modernity. Behind the Wheel: What to Expect from the Alpha5 As the Alpha5 gears up for production, slated for post-mid-2024, it’s clear that acquiring one will be as unique as the car itself. It stands as a testament to the enduring allure of the DeLorean name, now electrified for a new generation. For those who yearn for the days of flux capacitors and stainless steel, the Alpha5 offers a chance to reignite that passion — no time travel necessary.

Sustainable Tourism: The New Frontier With public sustainability awareness on the rise, the types of inquiries hotels receive are evolving. Questions are no longer limited to recycling programs but extend to consumables and operational efficiency. The industry, as Griffin suggests, needs to revisit foundational planning to integrate these concerns from the ground up. Adaptive Reuse: A Sustainable Luxury Jim Camp, IA’s Building Repositioning Lead, argues for the inherent sustainability in repurposing existing buildings rather than constructing anew, particularly in Europe where repositioning is gaining traction. This approach aligns with the essential sustainability tenets of reducing, reusing, and recycling, whilst also preserving green spaces. Engineering an Eco-Friendly Stay Paul Scriven from HDR highlights the role of smart building controls in energy conservation within guest rooms. By utilising smart devices or room keys, hotels can significantly reduce energy consumption, aligning luxury with eco-friendliness. Lighting the Way to Eco-Luxury Lighting design plays a critical role in sustainable hospitality, with innovations allowing for the maximisation of natural light and the strategic use of artificial lighting. These advancements, alongside renewable energy technologies, present a prime opportunity for hotels to lead by example in reducing their carbon footprint. Material Matters in Luxury Design The luxury experience today is not just about aesthetics but also sustainability. Givone emphasises the importance of local sourcing for furniture and materials, which reduces transportation emissions and adds local authenticity to the guest experience. Mud, Mushrooms, and Algae: The Future of Luxury Sustainable materials are becoming the new status symbols in luxury design. Sarah Kenyon from the KLC School of Design remarks on the emergence of natural dyes and 3D-printed organic materials as the avant-garde in sustainable luxury. The Holistic Approach to Sustainable Luxury Crafting a sustainable luxury experience transcends the physical environment, encompassing marketing, operations, and beyond. As the industry anticipates more informed inquiries from consumers, the focus on sustainability must be integrated from the onset of planning to ensure a harmonious balance between opulence and environmental stewardship. The luxury hotel of the future not only offers grandeur but does so with a deep commitment to protecting and nurturing the planet.

A NEW DAWN FOR AIR TRAVEL: CHANGI’S TERMINAL 2 WELCOMES THE WORLD AGAIN Engineering Marvel Restored: Singapore’s Gateway Expands for the Future

Singapore’s aviation landscape celebrates a momentous resurgence as Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 (T2) swings open its doors after an extensive three-and-a-half-year transformation. This reopening heralds the return to full operational vigour, with all four terminals now accommodating the ebb and flow of global travellers. In a move that pre-empts the projected surge in air travel demand, T2’s refurbishment has not only been a triumph of foresight but also an embodiment of Singapore’s resilience and innovation. The expansion adds a significant 5 million passengers per annum to Changi’s already impressive handling capacity, now standing at a robust 90 million. The unveiling of the upgraded terminal was graced by Senior Minister Mr Teo Chee Hean, who emphasised the strategic decision to press on with the project even as the pandemic’s uncertainties loomed large. His remarks resonated with optimism for the airport’s post-pandemic rebound and confidence in its strengthened global position. The Terminal as an Oasis: A Confluence of Nature and Technology. Upon stepping into T2, visitors are immediately enveloped by a design ethos that celebrates the tranquillity of nature. Architectural elements draw inspiration from the organic — ceilings that mimic landforms, carpets patterned after nature’s tapestry, and a wealth of verdant displays that breathe life into the terminal’s ambiance. Central to this naturalistic embrace is ‘The Wonderfall’, a towering digital installation set against a lush backdrop, where a virtual waterfall majestically cascades, mesmerising onlookers. This theme of enchantment continues with ‘Dreamscape’, a garden that captivates with its flora and a dynamic ‘digital sky’, changing hues to mimic the time of day. The terminal’s expansion has not only been aesthetic but also functional. More than 21,000 square metres have been added to facilitate cutting-edge infrastructure, including an expanded Fast and Seamless Travel (FAST) zone. Innovations like the automated Special Assistance Lanes and a state-of-the-art early baggage storage system, capable of handling 2,400 bags, epitomise Changi’s commitment to inclusivity and efficiency. 64 SPECIAL EDITION DEC 2023

Retail and Dining: A Fusion of Culture and Convenience Changi’s T2 also redefines the travel retail experience. From the first Southeast Asian Funko pop-up to local brands that serve a slice of Singapore, the terminal teases every visitor’s curiosity and caters to their tastes. The duplex cafe, Jones the Grocer, and the Korean fast-food innovator JINJJA Chicken, are but a few of the new faces in this vibrant ‘retail-tainment’ scene. The transit area doesn’t lag in extravagance, boasting the opulent Lotte Duty Free Wines & Spirits store, complete with Toni, a robot bartender. Above, an LED ring displays a poetic nod to Li Bai, adding a cultural touchstone to the retail experience. Gourmet Adventures Await: A Culinary Cornucopia T2’s Gourmet Garden offers travellers a culinary journey, boasting views of the apron against a backdrop of lush greenery. The iconic Hard Rock Cafe, alongside local delights such as Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice and The Hainan Story, ensures a tapestry of flavours that reflect Singapore’s rich gastronomic heritage. Recognition and Acclaim: A Testament to Excellence Changi’s T2 is not just a triumph in design and service but has also been recognised for its commitment to universal design and sustainability, securing both the BCA Universal Design Excellence Award and the BCA Green Mark Platinum. As T2 reopens, it is not just a terminal that stands ready to welcome the world; it is a symbol of Singapore’s unwavering spirit, a beacon of innovation, and a testament to the belief in a future where air travel continues to bring the world closer together.

THE FUTURE CAST IN CONCRETE: LÜNEN’S LEAP INTO 3D PRINTED SOCIAL HOUSING Germany’s Industrial Heartland Embraces 3D Printing for a Sustainable Revolution in Affordable Housing

In the once coal-dusted cityscape of Lünen, nestled in the industrious Ruhr area of Germany, a novel silhouette has emerged against the skyline. This isn’t just another building; it’s the first 3D printed social housing apartment building in Europe, a pioneering project that’s reshaping the contours of affordable housing. Commissioned by the visionary PERI 3D Construction, and utilizing the groundbreaking 3D construction printers of COBOD International, this project marks a significant evolution from single-story dwellings to a multi-level residential edifice. It’s not merely a stride forward for the building industry but a leap towards solving Europe’s housing crisis. The new building in Lünen spans 651 square meters and will house six apartment units, each designed to offer comfort and modernity within a range of 61 to 81 square meters. This development is a direct countermeasure to the daunting forecast by UN Habitat, which estimates a need for 96,000 new affordable homes daily by 2030. Ina Scharrenbach, the influential Minister for Home Affairs, Municipal Affairs, Construction and Digitalization of North Rhine-Westphalia, has lauded the Lünen project as a groundbreaking initiative, underscoring the state’s commitment to pioneering modern, quick, and sustainable housing solutions in these demanding times. The construction of the building itself is a marvel of modern engineering. The first two floors are crafted using the 3D concrete printing process, while the top floor boasts a timber hybrid construction method, marrying traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. The foundation and base are constructed using conventional methods, yet the facade retains the distinctive printed concrete structure, a testament to the innovative approach of this project.

Fabian Meyer-Brötz, Managing Director of PERI 3D Construction GmbH, speaks with justified pride about the efficiency and resource conservation of 3D printing in creating habitable spaces. He believes fervently in the potential that opens up in the multi-family housing segment and is convinced that the technology is not just ready but ideal for widespread use in modern construction sites, especially for social housing projects. Henrik Lund-Nielsen, Founder & General Manager of COBOD International, echoes this sentiment, noting the Lünen project as part of an accelerating trend. Over the past few years, 3D construction printing technology has made remarkable advances, expanding from small, single-floor houses to larger projects with multiple floors, and not just within the residential market. PERI’s German projects in 2023, including the data center and football club house, are a testament to this burgeoning trend. Moreover, COBOD International is not just pioneering in Europe. The company, a leader in 3D printer supply for the construction sector, has over 70 printers distributed worldwide, championing the construction revolution across continents with multifunctional robots and 3D printing, aiming to automate half of the construction processes. Their innovative technology has been instrumental in erecting structures ranging from residential to commercial, public to sports facilities, and educational institutions. The collaboration between PERI and COBOD, fortified by PERI’s acquisition of a minority share in COBOD, is a union that has been pushing the boundaries of 3D construction printing. PERI, with its reputation as a leading manufacturer and supplier of formwork and scaffolding systems, brings unmatched expertise to the partnership, which has already seen the release of the first 3D-printed residential building in Germany and the largest printed apartment building in Europe. As Lünen’s 3D printed building nears completion, it stands as a beacon of sustainable development and social responsibility. It’s a manifestation of what can be achieved when innovation meets necessity, and it represents a hopeful vision for the future—a future where the dream of affordable housing becomes a reality for all. This project is more than a construction milestone; it’s a blueprint for a new era of social housing.

INTRODUCING GROK: MUSK’S MAVERICK AI WITH A MIND OF ITS OWN A Dash of Douglas Adams: Elon Musk Channels ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide’ in Latest AI Venture

Elon Musk, the vanguard of tech innovation, has once again captured the global spotlight with the launch of Grok, an AI chatbot described as having a “rebellious streak”. Drawing inspiration from the whimsical universe of ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’, Musk’s latest creation promises a blend of intelligence and irreverence, catering to the premium subscribers of his X platform. Musk, who has often voiced his concerns regarding the potential risks AI poses to humanity, revealed that Grok’s capabilities extend to understanding and interacting with user posts on the X platform. The tech mogul shared a glimpse into Grok’s sardonic wit with a post demonstrating the chatbot’s tongue-in-cheek guidance on illicit drug synthesis – a jest quickly capped with a disclaimer underscoring the chatbot’s discouragement of illegal activities. Grok, currently in its nascent stages and under wraps from the general public, is slated for release to X’s Premium+ subscribers. The term ‘grok’, coined by the legendary sci-fi author Robert A Heinlein, signifies deep and intuitive understanding, a characteristic that Musk’s xAI team has endeavoured to embed within this digital entity. This new foray into the AI domain by Musk’s xAI emerges as a noteworthy competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. While Grok-1, the underlying model of the chatbot, has shown prowess in certain areas, surpassing GPT-3.5 in benchmarks like middle-school math, it remains a step behind the more advanced GPT-4 in terms of the sheer volume of data and computational power employed during training.

ARTICLE

The initial roll-out of Grok is being trialled with a select user base in the US, with promises of expanded capabilities and features to come. Enthusiasts and early adopters can anticipate a gradual introduction to the wider audience through an “early access program” exclusive to X subscribers. Musk’s engagement with AI has been a journey of both association and divergence. Having co-founded OpenAI, he later distanced himself due to differing visions and a desire to focus on his myriad other ventures. Despite endorsing a temporary moratorium on AI development to assess safety measures, Musk acknowledged the impracticality of such a pause and has instead pivoted towards steering AI development “in a good way” with the inception of xAI. At a recent AI safety summit, Musk reiterated his stance on AI as a formidable challenge to human supremacy in intellect, potentially outpacing human control and decision-making capabilities. His dialogue with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak delved into the profound impact of AI on the job market, suggesting a future where human labour becomes obsolete. With Grok, Musk seems to be navigating the fine line between fostering AI advancement and maintaining a cautious approach to its integration into society. The AI chatbot embodies his vision of an intelligent, autonomous system with a flair for humour, packaged in a product that could redefine the landscape of AI interactions.

FUSING ESG WITH LUXURY LIVING The Convergence of Opulence and Ethical Stewardship

In the sphere of luxury living, where indulgence meets innovation, sustainability is emerging as a new badge of honour. A McKinsey Global Survey has unearthed a compelling consensus—83% of C-suite leaders are convinced that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) programmes will be more valuable in the near future. Accenture’s study further solidifies this stance, demonstrating that companies excelling in ESG performance boast operating margins nearly four times higher than their lower-scoring counterparts. “Sustainability isn’t merely a buzzword; it’s the redefinition of enduring value and corporate success,” comments the founder of an esteemed luxury brand. This paradigm shift towards sustainability contemplates the broad ecological, social, and economic footprint of a company’s operations, with the implicit understanding that such strategies underpin long-term viability. The imperative for corporate responsibility is escalating, and transparency is becoming ubiquitous. Today’s corporations recognise that actions must speak louder than words. Schneider Electric, recognised as a global sustainability leader, is propelling its commitment to generate 80% “green revenues” by 2025. “Our climate commitments are ambitious but crucial for our shared future,” asserts a managing director at Schneider Electric.

Neste from Finland, a pioneer in renewable fuels, is venturing into a billion-dollar collaboration aimed at leading the renewable fuels market. Danish energy company Orsted has metamorphosed from coal dependency to becoming the world’s top offshore wind farm developer, a feat achieved by catalysing their supply chain towards sustainable practices. JetBlue takes to the skies with a pledge towards carbon neutrality, funneling its investments into environmental projects, while also investigating renewable aviation fuel. Sportswear giants Nike and Adidas have made serious commitments to sustainability; Nike with a focus on renewable energy and waste reduction, and Adidas through a sustainable supply chain and a promise that by 2025, nine out of 10 of their products will be made from sustainable materials. Household names Unilever and Nestlé are on the forefront as well, with Unilever targeting net-zero emissions from its products by 2039, and Nestlé aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Retailers such as Walmart, IKEA, and H&M are steering towards sustainable retailing, catalysing collaboration across their supply chains to diminish waste and optimise material usage. In the biopharmaceutical sector, companies like Biogen and Novo Nordisk are embedding energy efficiency and waste reduction into their operations. Biogen has even linked a portion of its employee compensation to the achievement of its ESG goals, while Novo Nordisk has committed to net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2045 at the latest. Beverage leaders Pepsi and Coca-Cola have set audacious objectives for reusable packaging and water stewardship, further demonstrating the widespread commitment to sustainable business practices. To authentically embody sustainability, organisations must navigate two pivotal gaps: the “knowing-doing” gap, where knowledge must be translated into action, and the “compliance-competitive advantage” gap, which differentiates between mandatory compliance and strategic competitive advantage through sustainability. Leading companies in sustainability transition from reactive measures to proactive strategies, and quantify the business case for their sustainability investments. Transparency is indispensable for assessing and ameliorating sustainability practices, and board engagement is paramount. Moreover, the cultivation of a collaborative ecosystem is vital for efficient and impactful sustainability practices. “Embedding sustainability requires a comprehensive approach, a synergy between strategic intent and steadfast commitment that permeates the entire organisation,” remarks the managing director of a trailblazing luxury brand. As the luxury industry navigates this transformative path, it doesn’t just adapt to sustainability as a megatrend; it is setting the pace, proving conclusively that the epitome of luxury is, unequivocally, sustainable luxury.

REDEFINING TOURISM IN THE ERA OF CLIMATE CHANGE An opinion piece by Sameh Muhtadi, CEO of RAK Properties Ras Al Khaimah is fast emerging as a global must-visit destination, with highly ambitious tourism targets, and rightly so. Featured in Time magazine’s World’s Greatest Places of 2022 and CNN Travel’s best destinations to visit in 2023, the emirate welcomed more than 1.13 million visitors in 2022 – a 15.6 per cent increase on 2021 figures. Whilst RAK’s soar in popularity is extremely positive for the emirate’s tourism industry, it comes with its challenges – most notably, how can the sector ensure the continued protection of RAK’s natural environment and wildlife whilst successfully developing and managing its flourishing tourism activities? It is not just developers that are passionate about delivering sustainable tourism. According to Booking.com’s Sustainable Travel Report, more than 75 per cent of people want to make their holiday travel more sustainable. Meanwhile, a 2021 report by travel firm Virtuoso revealed that 72 per cent of those surveyed believe that travel should support local communities and economies, preserve destinations’ cultural heritage and protect the planet. However, there are perceptions amongst tourists that sustainable travel is more expensive resulting in an increasing dilemma between conscience and cost. As such, the onus is on developers and hotel operators to successfully balance sustainability with quality and valuefor-money hospitality products. So, what does it take for a destination to make sustainability its identity? Part of the equation is its visitors, our guests. Our strategy needs to be twofold. On one hand, decision-makers and the tourism industry stakeholders need to invest; they need to make bold decisions. On the other hand, guests need to be empowered to feel that they have a part to play in making tourism more sustainable. They are a vital part of the puzzle. The demand for a more responsible, balanced tourism is here, and we need to provide the necessary foundations that will enable travellers to act, to participate, to advocate. As a developer, it is our duty to place sustainability at the heart of our strategy. We are certainly investing towards it, but it’s vital that we take one step further and transform our guests into conscious, eco tourists. This is not an easy feat. And closing the ‘intention-action’ gap is, after all, a challenge that transcends tourism. One of the first steps we must take is to drive a deep appreciation of the destination in question. From Wadi Shawka and the Hajar mountains to untouched coastlines and mangroves teeming with fish and flamingos, it’s easy for visitors to fall in love with the raw and natural beauty of Ras Al Khaimah. Educating tourists on the fragility of the habitat and its flora and fauna is crucial in driving a sense of accountability and shared responsibility around its preservation.

Encouraging guests to be ‘water-wise’, ditch single-use plastics, use responsible tour operators, buy local and not litter is, of course, important; however, guests must see their role within the context of a much bigger drive. Delivering sustainable tourism requires concerted and collective effort from all stakeholders – from developers and hotel operators to transport firms, local attractions and of course the Government. From employing sustainable building practices, to driving energy efficiency and reducing food waste, it is important to consider how to integrate sustainability best practices throughout the entire project lifecycle – from design to development and, not forgetting whole supply chains. This is a long-term and ambitious goal that requires substantial investment from each and every stakeholder. However, the potential consequences of inaction are too high. We have a collective responsibility to do everything we can to reduce emissions and protect the environment from the emerging climate threat. At RAK Properties, we are very transparent as to where the issues lie and what can be done to ensure we deliver a more sustainable tourism experience for our guests. Our lands in Mina Al Arab are home to more than 7000 trees that support migratory bird patterns, whilst our development portfolio extends over two million square meters of protected mangroves. To protect these in the long run, we have implemented a series of initiatives including changing our fleet of vehicles to electric or low emitting ones, placing solar panels on the roof of buildings where possible, LEED certifying our new Anantara hotel and creating a nursery to grow endemic species. We believe that creating long-term value and acting responsibly to protect the environment go hand-in-hand. The RAK Government have made impressive leaps in ensuring that the emirate becomes a leading destination for sustainable travel. Recently, RAK was awarded the Silver Certification under the Earth Check’s Sustainable Destination program – the world’s leading scientific benchmarking and certification program for tourism destinations. Impressively, RAK is the first place in the Middle East to earn this level of recognition for sustainability. We are incredibly lucky to have been blessed with an emirate that is as rich in nature and wildlife as it is in history and culture. We are committed to supporting the Government to drive the continued advancement of RAK as the number one sustainable travel destination in the Middle East by 2025. With tourism contributing to five per cent of Ras Al Khaimah’s GDP, RAK is set to create the blueprint for balanced tourism in the region and redefine sustainable tourism for the modern traveller who seeks to explore the world whilst leaving no trace behind.

NORTHERN LIGHTS IN NORWAY: A SPECTACULA NATURE`S THEATRE THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO WITNESSING THE AURORA BOREALIS

Norway, a land where the celestial dance of the Northern Lights unfolds across the Arctic sky, offers a natural spectacle unlike any other. This guide is your compass to navigating the ethereal glow of the aurora borealis, a phenomenon that has captivated human imagination for millennia. Understanding the Aurora Borealis

The Northern Lights are a stunning display of nature’s artistry. Charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in a dazzling light show. The scientific name, aurora borealis, comes from Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn, and Boreas, the Greek name for the north wind. The Best Time for Aurora Hunting

Norway’s auroral displays are best viewed in the dark, cold months. The peak season is from November to February,

when the nights are longest. However, the lights are a constant presence, merely obscured by daylight or the summer’s midnight sun. March often provides clearer skies, making it an appealing time for visitors. A Journey to the North

The quest for the aurora begins with travelling northward. Oslo, Norway’s capital, is situated too far south for

optimal viewing. Instead, intrepid travellers should set their sights on Tromsø or the archipelago of Svalbard.

Tromsø, known as the Gateway to the Arctic, offers a blend of culture and nature, while Svalbard, a remote northern outpost, promises a wilder encounter with the lights amidst glaciers and polar bears. In the Heart of the Aurora Zone

Tromsø, located at 69°N, sits right in the centre of the aurora zone. The city itself is a vibrant hub, teeming with

winter activities and a lively cultural scene. Despite its northern latitude, it’s advisable to venture away from the city lights to places like the Lyngsalpene mountain range for the clearest view of the aurora.

DESTINATION

The Polar Nights of Svalbard

In Svalbard, the Polar Night reigns from November to January, enveloping the land in continuous darkness and creating the perfect stage for the Northern Lights. Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town, offers unique experiences such as dogsledding or snowmobile tours under the glow of the aurora. Forecasting the Lights

While predicting the aurora with certainty remains beyond our current capabilities, technology offers some assistance. SolarHam provides a three-day geomagnetic forecast, and the Aurora Forecast app gives real-time

updates on the auroral oval’s position. Norwegian Meteorological Institute’s Yr is a go-to for cloud-free skies, and the Norway Lights app combines aurora activity with cloud coverage data. Embracing the Norwegian Way

The Norwegians have a deep-rooted tradition of embracing the outdoors, regardless of the weather. This philosophy

extends to aurora hunting. Dressing warmly and patiently waiting for nature to unveil its glory is part of the experience. For those who prefer the comforts of indoors, aurora wake-up services in hotels alert guests when the lights appear.

Experiencing the Aurora with Experts

A plethora of tours are available for those seeking local knowledge. Photography tours from Tromsø cater to those

wishing to capture the aurora’s beauty, while dinner cruises offer a chance to admire the lights amidst the serene fjords. The Hurtigruten voyage from Bergen is particularly special, providing a coastal journey with guaranteed Northern Lights sightings. Preserving the Moment

Capturing the Northern Lights on camera requires skill and patience. Photography tours often include lessons on how to best photograph the aurora, ensuring that travellers can bring home more than just memories. The Magic of the Lights

The Northern Lights are more than a natural phenomenon; they are a cultural tapestry woven into the fabric of

Norwegian life. They inspire art, mythology, and science, serving as a reminder of our planet’s place in the wider cosmos.

The Northern Lights in Folklore and Culture

For centuries, the Northern Lights have held a mystical place in Norse mythology and Sami culture. They were often

seen as omens or the spirits of ancestors dancing in the sky. Today, they continue to inspire artists and storytellers, contributing to Norway’s rich cultural landscape. Conservation and Respect

As we seek out these wonders, it’s crucial to approach them with respect for the environment. Norway is a leader in conservation efforts, and visitors are encouraged to minimise their impact on the fragile Arctic ecosystem. In Conclusion

The Northern Lights in Norway offer an unrivalled experience, a chance to witness the magnificence of our planet

in its rawest form. It’s a journey of anticipation and wonder, one that rewards the patient and the adventurous with

a display that will live on in the heart long after the lights have faded. Whether you choose to embark on a guided tour or forge your own path, the aurora borealis is a phenomenon that promises to be as unforgettable as it is enchanting.

The novel twist lens design serves a dual purpose; it activates the camera and sets it for close-up shots, all while preventing unintended power-ons. This camera maintains the beloved features of its forerunners, such as the 2-element plastic lens and the auto-exposure functionality. It refuses to complicate what is meant to be effortless fun, exemplified by the built-in selfie mirror – a nod to the cultural zeitgeist. However, the Mini 12 isn’t without innovation; it boasts an intelligent flash system that fires only when necessary, an upgrade that avid instant photographers will appreciate. Aesthetically, the Instax Mini 12 is playful, coated in a palette of colors that echo its joyful essence. It’s designed to be an approachable companion, inviting even the most technologically averse to capture moments on a whim. For the purists craving a more traditional camera feel, the Instax Mini 40 and Mini 90 stand as alternatives, offering a different tactile experience. Accompanying the camera is Fujifilm’s Instax Up app, a digital bridge for your physical snapshots. It allows you to scan, store, and share your Instax moments online, blending the analog with the digital. While some may find solace in its convenience, others may opt to keep their prints in the physical realm, adorning walls and filling scrapbooks. The Instax Mini 12 remains the gateway to Fujifilm’s Instax series. It is the epitome of instant photography joy, presented in a compact, endearing package. Whether it’s the nostalgia it evokes or the excitement of seeing a photo develop before your eyes, the Instax Mini 12 is a testament to the enduring charm of instant photography.

The health features of the watch, from heart rate monitoring to sleep tracking, reflect Samsung’s vision of an all-encompassing personal device. The inclusion of FDA-cleared health notifications and the ability to switch phones without resetting the watch are the subtle yet impactful touches that define the Galaxy Watch6 Classic as a smartwatch built for the future, yet rooted in the values of the past. For the purists and the progressive alike, the Galaxy Watch6 Classic is a harmonious blend of the tactile and the technical, an accessory that does more than tell time—it tells a story of balance in an increasingly touchless world.
