With everything from mannequins to refridgerated displays, store fixtures to lighting this is truly the biggest global event for the retail environment. Discover some of our highlights from this years exhibition...

STORE FIXTURES

The cutaway material brings to mind the delicacy of lace, whilst the openess removes visual weight from the furniture. By placing different materials and colours behind the fret cut sections there reveals the possibility for more experimentation.

REVEAL THE DETAIL

Intricate patterns are laser cut into sheet metal, playing with the traditional notion of metal as a hard, cold material.

MATERIALS

The choice and variety of materials that are available to the retail designer are becoming ever more sophisticated - textures, colours and ‘effects’ allow brands and retailers to create unique brand environments.

These realistic surfaces are impressive visually and because they are supplied on standard boards they facilitate ease of manufacture without the need for speciliast equipment.

LIGHT THE WAY This quirky flooring caught our attention - with LED lighting integrated within the flooring tiles. This brought to mind the possibilites for instore navigation with directions being indicated on the floor along with the ability to potentially highlight fixtures and draw attention to a zone with flashing/moving sequences.

TECH It’s not surprising that there was a wealth of technology on show at this years event - although retailers are not so keen to fill their stores with digital screens as they used to be. Innovation and real world useability marks out those pieces which stand out - such as the transparent video screen ‘Kino’ above which manages to integrate technology with a real world application that could easily be used in a store window.

NOLOGY

This type of technology could be vital in determining the success of a store layout, the impact of a particular display and would provide a visual indication of which areas of the store, and even which products are drawing the most attention.

ANALYSIS The importance of well designed, inviting experiential retail interiors has long been a pre-requiste for retailers in the 21st century. There can be many challenges in analysing store design and visual displays because it can be difficult to quantify what makes a retail space inviting, or what it is that encourages customers to stop and take notice.

With the consumer sensing technology shown above, it is possible to highlight zones where there has been a high footfall or where customers have spent the most amount of time - as areas with high foot fall are highlighted in colours to indicate the frequency.

The majority of examples were utilised to take users on a walk through of a store environment, a worthwhile tool for those designing and laying out the stores - but for consumers the ‘real’ experience needs to be out of this world in order to keep them entertained.

VIRTUAL REALITY

There were many instances of virtual reality headsets being shown at this years Euroshop.

DIGITAL POS

With the advent of ever more cost effective digital displays, the feasibility of ‘live’ pricing and POS messaging is becoming more attractive to retailers. The ability to directly control and adjust pricing and discounts centrally, whilst responding to market conditions pro-actively is a key benefit of digital POS. In addition both product information and competitor pricing analysis can be displayed driving sales and brand loyalty. Global Display supplies Kohls in the USA as the sole supplier for the national implementation of digital signage throughout all 1067 stores in North America. To date over 5 million sign adaptors, covering 30 different designs have been supplied by Global Display.

ILLUMINATION

Innovation in lighting is usually focused on the lamp itself, in this case these LED strip lights form part of a system allowing structures and displays to be built by merely clipping the ends together using multi-headed connection hubs.

A crowd stopping focal point, both instore or in a window display moving physical elements captures the attention of consumers in a way that no digital screen can compete with. From lights that rise and fall over a distance of 3m, programmed in specific patterns to create something akin to an art installation. Simple T-shits which rise and fall in a wave pattern - simple but effective.

LIGHT IN MOTION

LIGHT MOVES These lighting fixtures are mounted on tracks, and can be remotely controlled from the ground, moving from left to right and with the ability to swivel in all directions - perfect for adjusting the lighting in those super high shopping centre windows.

Injecting some creativity in seasonal displays - literally tipping things on their head!

MANNEQUINS

Adding extra realism to a mannequin in a unique way, these figures feature fabric covered torsos, underneath which the breast and postier zones feature fully compressible padded areas, intended to mimic a more ‘true to life’ look and feel when merchandised.

ILLUMINATION

Throughout Milan there are numerous variations in lighting used, whether its for artistic effect or simply to grab your attention - lighting does more than just show the way.

This brand presented their latest collections inside a vast mirror clad exhibition stand, which continued the metallic theme alongside shades of soft grey and subdued but focused lighting.

Genesis Display presented a comprehensive range of display figures, incoporating fresh realistic figures alongside futuristic prototypes. The use of soft shade finishes and inclusion of sculptured hair and faces was a notable point of difference in the way the figures were showcased.

An exclusive mannequin distribution partnership with Global Display combines the latest in luxury and style, with a cohesive service for retail brands. ABC mannequins presented their latest collections with a sensitivity for beauty, creating truly authentic works of art, mannequins with soul, able to forge a link with the item of clothing and the surrounding context, “inhabiting it. ABC mannequins are world renowned for the premium and prestigious design, style and presentation, designed and conceived in Italy.

3D PRINTING There were many brands showcasing their developments in the process of 3D printing, Hans Boodt uses the Tractus T3500 to explore new mannequin forms.

Global Display works with a 3D printing company in the UK to create display props and mannequins - from life size to oversize, there is no limit to the possiblities for creating truly amazing retail displays.

Whilst not strictly 3D printing, the use of 5-axis CNC to carve mannequin forms from high density foam has long been an alternative to the traditional clay sculpting route for new mannequin creation.
