PLASTIC FANTASTIC FORMcard IS AN INNOVATIVE NEW PRODUCT WHICH PROVIDES AN ACCESSIBLE WAY TO UTILISE THERMOPLASTICS WITHOUT THE NEED FOR COMPLICATED MACHINERY OR MANUFACTURE. Developed into a handy sheet which can easily fit into the pocket, the card works its magic when dipped in hot water. This makes the plastic pliable and can be used to mold into something new, creating entirely new products or mending existing ones. Currently the developer is seeking funds via Kickstarter, with the intention for FORMcard to be a tool for innovators to experiment and invent with. http://www.fastcodesign.com/3053593/FORMcard

3D PRINTING ARCHITECTURE LAARMANS BRIDGE 3D PRINTING HAS COME A LONG WAY, AND THIS PROJECT BY A DUTCH DESIGNER WILL CREATE A UNIQUE BRIDGE THAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO MANUFACTURE USING EXISTING CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES... This is a sign of the way whole buildings will be built in the future, and opens up the possibilities for creating unique shapes and forms beyond the current limitations of previous building materials and techniques. Molten metal can be printed to produce complex frameworks in air with the use of a robotic arm like that used in car plant manufacture allowing for multi axis rotation and reach. In 2017, Dutch designer Joris Laarman will wheel a robot to the brink of a canal in Amsterdam. He'll hit an "on" button. He'll walk away. And when he comes back two months later, the Netherlands will have a new, one-of-a-kind bridge, 3D printed in a steel arc over the waters. http://mx3d.com/projects/bridge

MICROLATTICE STRUCTURE MICROLATTICE IS AN ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT AND FLEXIBLE MATERIAL DEVELOPED BY BOEING. THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE IS 99.99% AIR! It was originally conceived and developed for the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The material's structure means it is resilient against compression, and has especially high energy absorption. The structural composites of this could be used in vehicles, furniture and boats. The secret to the weightlessness is in the structure: the material is made up of a lattice of interconnected hollow tubes that are 1,000 times thinner then a human hair. The video likens the architecture of the metal to bone structure—hollow in the middle but not easily crushed, and lightweight at the same time. https://youtu.be/k6N_4jGJADY

COLD METAL FORMING

DESIGNER PAUL COCKSEDGE SEAMLESSLY JOINS MATERIALS BY USING FREEZING TECHNIQUES WHICH CONTRACT THE INDIVIDUAL PIECES, AS THEY EXPAND THEY LOCK INTO PLACE....FOREVER.

Cocksedge shrinks the metals by applying liquid nitrogen to the different materials. He then fits the contracted pieces into the pre-cut holes or slots of the room temperature slabs to form tabletops, desktops, and seats. The process of joining the individual pieces of furniture together relies on the way metal contracts as it freezes – shrinking in size by 1,000th of a milimetre. Once frozen, the metal can be inserted into pre-drilled holes, forming a join as it warms up and expands again. http://www.dezeen.com/2015/10/26/paul-cocksedge-freeze-exhibition-friedman-bendanew-york-usa/

ELECTRONICS REVOLUTION

THE VOLTERA V-ONE ENABLES CIRCUIT BOARDS TO BE PROTOTYPED WITHIN MINUTES, ELIMINATING THE FRUSTRATIONS WITH TRADITIONAL FABRICATION PROCESSES AND DRASTICALLY REDUCING HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT TIME. Solder paste is dispensed onto a PCB circuit board, that you then solder your components onto to get testing your circuitry. In future instead of waiting for an upgrade to ship, you could print & replace the circuit board in your phone and finish it off with a custom cover. the V-One should help a huge range of companies save time, money and resources. The current PCB-manufacturing process is time-consuming and expensive, which can put off start-ups looking to create brand new electronics. The V-One cuts out all the faff. https://d2pq0u4uni88oo.cloudfront.net/video-496130-h264_high.mp4

DYING TO SIT DOWN CHAIRS THAT LOOK LIKE PANTONE SWATCHES? THESE PLYWOOD CHAIRS COMBINE TRADITIONAL DYING AND JOINERY PROCESSES TO CREATE TRULY UNIQUE PIECES OF FURNITURE. Embedded dyes allow for a greater spectrum and depth of colour without compromising the beauty of the wood. If a surface is worn over time it will remain colourful and consistent. Dying wood is not new, however what is new is that manufacturers of substrates such as MDF are now embedding popular colours, for instance black throughout MDF which can remove some processes such as the requirement to paint in manufacture. Koike discovered that by dying strips of maple veneer using Gisen's textile dyes, he could impart a lovely blue patina to the wood, without hiding or destroying the maple's spiral burl pattern. http://www.fastcodesign.com/3053397/this-lovely-new-process-makes-chairsthat-look-like-pantone-swatches?partner=rss

3D PRINTING METAL

ITS NOT JUST PLASTIC THAT CAN BE 3D PRINTED, RAPID DEVELOPMENTS IN METAL ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING ARE REDUCING THE COSTS AND TIME ASSOCIATED WITH RAPID COMPONENT TESTING AND DEVELOPMENT. Metal 3D Printing –is the process by which parts are manufactured by a laser fusing together high performance metals, layer by layer. Produced directly from 3D CAD data, parts are strong and lightweight with complex internal features, such as undercuts, channels through sections, tubes within tubes and internal voids. DMLS uses a laser beam to melt 20-40 micron layers of metal powder on top of each other to create metal parts. It’s a fast, accurate and cost-effective method for the production of one-off prototype components and the economical manufacture of small series parts.
