...is a tutor?

A Tutor is a person who is responsible for leading a workshop and is one of the most important parts of a student workshop assembly. You can become a Tutor by making a successful application for a workshop.

There are many benefits to being a Tutor:

Below is a list of a Tutor’s responsibilities before, during and after an event.

You will learn new skills and develop those that you may already have. These skills include communication, leadership, team-building, design, etc.

It is the opportunity to explore your ideas in a practical way that you may not get from your traditional studies.

Before

Your experience as a Tutor will be a great addition to your CV, just like the outcomes of your workshop will be great features in your portfolio.

Develop your workshop idea in the months leading up to the event period, through co-operation with the organisers.

During Choose Participants for your workshop. Introduce your selected Participants to the concept of your project and work with them in the most effective way possible to achieve the workshop targets. Teach Participants useful new skills. Document the activities of the workshop. Meet regularly with Organisers.

After Publicise the outcomes of the workshop. 7

GEP

Grangegorman Exhibition Pavilion Objective Design and build a Pavilion.

Brief

Provide a sheltered space for exhibitions related to the history of the Grangegorman site. The concept of the Pavilion should provide an appropriate conceptual narrative in which to display such exhibitions. Cater for mounting media on walls, work suspended from the roof and any alternatives suggested by you. See page 25 for an outline of the site history that you can use as inspiration. The Pavilion must be designed so that large pieces of it can be pre-fabricated in a remote workshop facility and then transferred to the site for a 2-day assembly period. Dismantling the Pavilion in the future should not cause destruction of materials because the Pavilion may need to be rebuilt somewhere else. Permanent foundations are not allowed. Electric lighting can be used for functional and aesthetic reasons. Your Pavilion can be located anywhere in the courtyard spaces defined by the adjoining buildings.

21

GEP Max. dimensions 30m2 footprint area; 4m in height

Materials budget â‚Ź8,000

Number of Tutors/Participants 2 / 12

GEP Past

Mental Asylum

Present

The old buildings that occupy Grangegorman were originally built as the home of an Asylum. Opened in 1815, it was originally called the Richmond Lunatic Asylum and was created as an institution for the reception of ‘recoverable lunatics’. Patients came from the counties of Dublin, Louth, Meath and Wicklow.

Building site

As you can see in the photos, the site is currently being transformed. However, the site will

be covered by hard-landscaping by the time that your Pavilion will be built.

In 1958, its name was changed to St.Brendan’s Hospital. By this time, it had 2,000 patients (only some of these were permanent residents). Depending on the particular condition of the patient, the hospital could have been seen as a place to get some welcome respite from an illness for both the patient and their family, or as a form of imprisonment against the patient’s wishes. The hospital was closed down in 2010 to make way for the new Grangegorman masterplan. Before it closed, it was the oldest public psychiatric hospital in Ireland. An interesting point to note here is that an area which was formerly an inward looking place is becoming an open educational campus. This contrast also resonates with the nature of psychiatric institutes - patients which could be extremely bi-polar, often with violent consequences. The image on page 26 of the unusual fork is a potent reminder. The fork had short teeth, so that a patient using it as a weapon could cause ‘minimal damage’.

25

GEP Future: Grangegorman Urban Quarter Beginning in September 2014, with the opening of DIT facilities in Grangegorman, the site will begin its life as the Grangegorman Urban Quarter. This is a proposed education, health and community development masterplan that will see all departments of Dublin Institute of Technology combine to form one campus. This development will take a decade. Your Pavilion will sit in place for part of Phase 1 of the Masterplan. This phase will see the buildings around the site used as a library, canteen and main reception area for the School of Art, Design and Printing in DIT.

Objective

Submission

Design innovative and useful objects that respond to the needs of Dublin’s current unsocial situation.

One A1 describing the concept behind the interventions/object in response to the theme of the un/social situation in Dublin. - short description - proposed materials - concept drawing/sketch/diagram - a 3D representation of each proposed object - axonometric showing assembly of piece

Brief Not taking into account today’s leading technological advances, the design industry produces gadgets, furniture, clothes and accessories that are unintuitive, complicated and in the end unneeded. These things are produced using a cover up of innovation and an illusion of a “sensitive response” to the diverse range of peoples’ needs. As designers, it is up to you to come up with ideas and to create something that works at a Universal Design standard, as a direct response to Dublin’s problems of rising homelessness and the increase of unsocial spaces. The output will be exhibited and/or auctioned off in collaboration with the Simon Community.

Objective

Submission

Collecting information for printed and online publishing throughout the event, as well as filmed documentation and screening.

A description of how the two weeks of work will be structured. Types of content you would like to publish/ blog/ film.

Brief

An agenda of how information on MEDS could be brought to the public’s eye

Last year’s REC workshop was a huge success in gathering and spreading information through the regular release of printed publications that let everyone in MEDS know what each workshop is up to and other information about current areas of interest. This year we strive to expand REC’s impact to news reports, video logs and creating an online hype in order to reach the public outside of the MEDS circle.

A graphic representation of how the newspaper is to be laid out.

This year’s REC group should set up a blog, which is updated daily. Monitor the existing Global Green Facebook page and produce a printed newspaper every two days. A short film at the end or regular ‘news updates’ available for screening should also be produced. These are the basic requirements, but feel free to let your imagination run wild. You will be journalists, editors, film makers, photographers, writers and paparazzi – enough of a challenge?
