A BRIGHTER TOMORROW

War Child Ambassador Sarah Rafferty on a Future Beyond Conflict

Dr. Samantha Nutt, Founder and President of War Child USA and War Child Canada, knows that the impact of war is felt long after the crisis ends. From the devastating destruction of communities to stripping their families of vital means of support, to taking away their access to education and legal protection, war changes everyone and everything it touches.

An award-winning humanitarian, bestselling author, acclaimed public speaker, and medical doctor, Dr. Nutt has worked on the frontlines of many of the world’s major crises— from Iraq to Afghanistan, Somalia to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone to Darfur, Sudan. Her experiences in dozens of conflict zones around the globe gave her firsthand insight into how war impacts not only communities but also

children and their families.

Since 1999, War Child has worked on the frontlines of the world’s major crises, from Iraq to Afghanistan and beyond. Along the way, the organization has amassed support from celebrity changemakers, musicians, and actors like Sarah Rafferty.

Beloved for her acting roles in hit TV shows like Suits, Chicago Med Grey’s Anatomy and Netflix’s My Life With the Walter Boys, Rafferty has long been an example of what it looks like to use your platform for positive change.

Devoted to building awareness of the gender-based barriers that affect girls and women worldwide, Rafferty is an Ambassador for Plan Canada’s “Because I am a Girl" campaign and Seth and Lauren Miller-Rogen’s Hilarity For Charity, which

LIFE IN A WAR ZONE

“These are exceedingly difficult times,” explained Dr. Nutt. “Onefifth of all children in the world, 426 million, live in conflict zones. More than 115 million people have been forced from their homes—80 percent of them are women and children. They struggle not only to survive but also to access the very services needed to help them rebuild their lives and communities over the long term: education, employment, food security, and psychological support, as well as ongoing protection from violence, sexual exploitation, and abuse.” For children living in conflict zones, every day is a struggle. The things that many of us take for granted can be life-threatening for them. Conflict throws everyday life into chaos, and the uncertainty of what’s to come is a constant stressor.

The staggering number of children living in active war zones tells us that hundreds of millions of mothers around the world are also striving daily to protect their children from the devastation of war.

“Imagine what it must be like to try to look after a family while living in a war zone,” said Rafferty. “To bring your children up without access to food, education, protection, safety. To live in a hostile and dangerous environment and feel like you are entirely on your own.”

War Child uses a bold, community-driven approach to deliver programs that give children the best chance to overcome the challenges of war and grow up to see a brighter future.

“When you empower children and women and provide them with

the tools they need to survive and thrive, you provide hope and a way forward to a brighter future,” said Rafferty. “War Child has done this in so many regions of the world, and their programs have changed the lives of so many. I’ve learned about children who missed years of schooling because of war, lost hope, and are now graduating from War Child’s catch-up learning programs and aspiring to be their country’s next leaders, doctors, and entrepreneurs. I've learned about women in Afghanistan participating in War Child’s ‘livelihoods and skills training programs’ who continue to earn a living and provide for their families despite enormous odds."

War Child’s Mother’s Week Campaign, which ran from May 6th through May 12th, spotlighted these women.

“Mothers everywhere want to do everything they can to create opportunities for their children,”

Rafferty explained of the campaign.

“During war, women are often widowed and become the sole providers for their families. They are highly vulnerable and need programs that provide education, skills, and small business training. A mother's access to basic education improves the chances of her child living past their fifth birthday by 50 percent. These programs can ensure that vulnerable women can access income and economic opportunities crucial to their family’s survival.”

War Child supports 1.2 million women, children, and families annually. They provide numeracy and literacy classes to vulnerable women and catch-up education to children who have missed out on years of schooling. They work with

women and youth, offering skills training and small business loans so that they become less aid-dependent and lift their families out of poverty. They also protect women's and children's rights through access to justice programs. War Child also enhances public education and awareness through music and other arts-based initiatives.

“There are only so many wars to fight, whereas the possibilities for investing in reconstruction, reconciliation, democratic development, health care, and social welfare for atrisk populations are nearly infinite,” shared Dr. Nutt.

INVESTING IN A FUTURE FREE OF WAR

Humanitarian organizations often focus on the short-term needs of communities in crisis. While these measures can be incredibly helpful, they leave a gap in long-term support for addressing the conditions that contribute to violence and instability.

The difficulty, Dr. Nutt explained, is due in part to the fact that aid organizations are largely staffed and managed by foreigners, not locals. This can lead to a disconnect between the organization's employees and those who need their support.

War Child exists to bridge the gap between short-term emergency relief (primarily food, health care, water, and shelter) and long-term development programming that can help break the cycle of poverty, violence, and despair that so many are facing in war-torn communities. Even when the headlines disappear, War Child remains on the ground, knowing that the work is not over yet.

“Sustainable change is only

works to raise brain health awareness among the younger generation and advocate on behalf of caregivers. In 2019, Rafferty joined forces with War Child.

“I was introduced to War Child through my good friends Thomas Sadoski and Amanda Seyfried, who are both War Child Ambassadors,” Rafferty explained. “They asked me to join a host committee for a fundraiser they were helping to organize—a comedy night in Los Angeles with Sarah Silverman and friends. I was moved by what I learned about War Child and their work from founder Dr. Samantha Nutt and the War Child team that evening. Since then, I’ve learned so much about the state of the world and those in far-off places who are often forgotten once the headlines disappear.”

possible when you invest in building capacity for local people and communities,” said Rafferty. Rather than building parallel infrastructures, helicoptering in outside expertise, and leaving nothing in your wake once attention has moved elsewhere, War Child works with local community partners who understand the challenges and needs and hires all local staff to lead and run their programs.”

Local leaders and communities have the most in-depth understanding of their needs and the specific challenges they face, making them the best choice to create sustainable change with support from War Child. This holistic system allows them to build systems of change and empowerment not just for these communities but within them.

“Education, hard skills, the capacity to keep earning—none of those things, once acquired, can be lost to war. Those are forever,” added Dr. Nutt. “War Child’s model of humanitarian action is rooted in collaboration and embraces the complexity of generational change.”

The hope is that one day, War Child will no longer be needed, and communities will be able to continue this critical work independently. For now, however, War Child’s work is far from over.

“Over the last two years, War Child has witnessed an escalation in armed violence across a number of our areas of operation, including Afghanistan, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” said Dr. Nutt. “The demand for our services and expertise continues to grow at an alarming pace, and War Child is limited by our financial resources. Foreign aid and individual

philanthropy are not merely acts of charity; they are indispensable investments in a secure future for us all. Humanitarian aid is an imperfect response to a violently imperfect world. It should not be needed, but it is. We could not do this work without the incredible support of our donors.”

War Child’s work empowers over 1.2 million people annually in some of the most complex humanitarian environments. From local leaders working to build a better future to women rising from poverty to care for their families, War Child shows us that no matter the odds, humanity has the resilience to fight for a stronger, safer world.

“I fir mly believe in War Child’s thoughtful, grassroots, locally driven, long-lasting approach,” said Rafferty.

“Their programs empower children, families, and local communities to break cycles of poverty and violence through access to education, economic opportunities, and justice.”

There are so many ways to support War Child and invest in a better future for children and families everywhere.

Behind the Miracles: The Zakat Foundation is Sharing Goodness

Halil Demir, Executive Director and Founder of the Zakat Foundation of America, has spent the bulk of his life taking care of others. From witnessing strife in refugee camps to seeing members of his South Side Chicago community face hunger and homelessness, he has seen that poverty is far-reaching—but he’s never let that notion overshadow his love for helping and giving back. Instead, he’s used it as a motivator, creating the Zakat Foundation of America. This non-profit organization seeks to enrich and empower the lives of those facing poverty instead of only aiding them.

A LIFELONG MISSION

When Demir thinks back on some of the most impactful moments of his storied career in non-profit work, he remembers the eyes of the people he has helped—more specifically, the look of joy, relief, and, in some especially poignant moments, sadness.

“When I was a young man, still a university student, I received a call looking for someone who could represent the Red Cross in Iran and Iraq and act as a translator,” Demir recalled. “I left university and traveled between refugee camps during the first Gulf War. Millions of Kurdish refugees were living in these

camps; I remember the devastation everywhere you looked.

“Every day, I would go to the children’s camp, a large orphanage tent. I would bring gifts for the children, spend time with them, make them laugh, and they got used to seeing me. When I had to return to school, I told the children that this time would be different—I would not be returning the next day. A young girl, no more than six years old, looked up at me with her big eyes, held my hand, and asked me, ‘But if you don’t come, who will take care of me?’”

Demir shared that for the entirety of his trip home and every day after, he has thought of that question—it became the driving force of his humanitarian work.

“Today, Zakat Foundation runs orphanages, schools, universities, and life-saving clinics all over the world, helping thousands of people every day,” Demir continued. “Her words and the sadness in her eyes have never left my mind, and I have dedicated my life’s work to her and other children like her. She changed my life.”

BUILDING ENRICHMENT

The difference between assistance and aid is that empowerment is the key to lifelong, transformational

change. It’s the difference between giving a family a meal and equipping them for food-resilient farming. It’s a hand-up instead of a hand-out.

Dedicated to humanitarianism, Demir has led the Zakat Foundation through the creation of schools, orphanages, and clinics in vulnerable areas and developing nations. In Mali, where the Zakat Foundation has done powerful work, these clinics are life-saving—Demir explains that thousands of patients have walked through those doors.

Their impact on home turf is just as meaningful. From the Carolinas to Puerto Rico, the Zakat Foundation has been a crucial support system to Americans, guiding newcomers and refugees to essential aid while lending a helping hand to neighbors in need, including food, clothing, and hygiene item distributions.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Zakat Foundation worked to truck more than 1.3 million pounds of farmpicked, fresh produce from coast to coast. The Foundation mobilizes thousands of volunteers from Chicago and beyond to join in their impact, including schools, churches, and mosques, never turning away a helping hand.

WORLDWIDE IMPACT

In making sure their impact is long-lasting and self-sustaining, the Zakat Foundation has a range of programs that support wellbeing, education, and food security—the building blocks to fruitful livelihoods.

Their sustainable livelihood projects, including livestock programs, agricultural cooperatives, and vocational and entrepreneur courses in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South America, have paved the path to self-sufficiency. It has given thousands—particularly women— the means, know-how, and resources to uplift themselves, their families, and their communities to financial independence, better health and nutrition, and quality education.

Demir shared the story of the Goat Village in Mail, where the Zakat Foundation provided families with the means to start their own farms, resulting in a thriving source of cheese, bulk food, and income for the farmers.

“It’s an incredible program,” he said. “We give a coupled pair of animals to a family, and of course, they can create little animals and start a farm. It’s now referred to as the Goat Village because the goats have been so prosperous.”

Even more inspiring, the village then directed the Zakat Foundation to another nearby community—citing that they had received all the help they needed and wanted to share their blessings with others facing the same struggles.

Zakat Foundation’s growing global food security program now feeds an astonishing 10 million meals annually to those in need, including 10 million pounds of meat in 44 countries. In addition, they build and install water wells and pumps, engineering self-sustaining potable water sources for dozens of communities worldwide.

Through it all, Demir turns his thanks towards the donors who make it all possible.

“Americans are very generous people,” he said. “We don't have millionaires and billionaires supporting us, but truly generous everyday people who want to help others and trust that our organization wants to make that happen. To us, every penny is sacred.”

Limbs for Life Foundation

Imagine the unthinkable tragedy of being hit by a distracted driver while standing on the side of the road. Now, try and imagine being hit by that distracted driver and watching your father die before your eyes while you sustain a life-changing injury of an above-the-knee amputation. It is almost more than one can comprehend. That is what happened to Richie Horvat on October 5, 2023, while driving to work. Richie ran out of gas and called his father to come help him when a distracted driver ran off the road on I-35 outside of Fort Worth, hitting them and changing Richie’s world. With no insurance and no resources, Richie’s wife, then fiancée, Maryann Davis, was directed to the Limbs for Life Foundation (LFL) in Oklahoma City.

Randy Titony, Executive Director of the Foundation, recalled the Facebook message he received. Titony stated, “Maryann reached out in shock with no idea what she needed, nor where to get help. I responded immediately and told her they had come to the right place. Richie’s situation is why we exist.”

Through the kindness of strangers, Richie was able to receive the much-needed help from LFL and obtain his prosthesis. He stated, “Amazing people to work with, making everything easier since my amputation. Randy answers all my questions. They

have given my wife and me hope; so much so, that someday, I hope to help people like me.”

Since its inception in 1995, the Limbs for Life Foundation has been dedicated to the mission of assisting individuals who lack access to

prosthetic care due to financial constraints. Titony stated, “Our mission is simple yet profound: to provide fully functional lower limb prosthetics for those who would otherwise be unable to afford them. In doing so, we enable individuals to regain their mobility, independence, and the confidence to embrace life’s opportunities. Our impact is immediate and life-changing. We enable people who have no other possibilities for funding to receive a prosthesis and literally get back on their feet.”

A prosthesis can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000, and through partnerships with hundreds of prosthetic facilities across the U.S., LFL can fund a patient locally in their community.

So, how can you help build a LEGacy through the Limbs for Life Foundation? There are numerous ways to make a meaningful impact.

Financial contributions through grants, cash donations, stocks, bequests, or sponsoring a fundraising event can help provide the necessary resources to purchase prosthetic devices for those in need.

Every donation, regardless of size, plays a vital role in transforming lives and enabling individuals to overcome the obstacles of limb loss. LFL pays prosthetic facilities a discounted rate for each client’s limb, allowing them to go wherever they choose to obtain their prosthetic care. When you donate to Limbs for Life, 100 percent of your donation goes directly to funding a prosthetic leg.

Gifts to Limbs for Life immediately change someone’s life and restore the everyday functions that most of us take for granted, such as walking, working, and simply being out with family and friends. For $2500, a person can receive a prosthesis and be given the gift of freedom and mobility. Author John Bunyan once said, “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” Richie’s story is a true testament to that fact.

For more information about the incredible work of LFL, visit them at limbsforlife.org and help them build a LEGacy.

From Haiti to Kentucky: CORE’s Mission Knows No Boundaries

Established following the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010, CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) has been dedicated to supporting communities in times of crisis. For nearly 15 years, CORE has found themselves thrust into the most dire situations, ranging from war in Ukraine, earthquakes in Türkiye, flooding in Kentucky, and more, helping some 10 million people in 27 regions worldwide.

The organization, co-founded by Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn and humanitarian leader Ann Lee, brings immediate response and recovery to underserved communities after disaster strikes and works within the community to build long-term resilience.

"Since CORE's inception after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, our approach has been to provide critical humanitarian relief for communities who need it most by listening, learning and taking action. A willingness to take calculated risks and to constantly adapt has fueled our growth as an organization and allows us to remain nimble to respond to urgent needs around the globe.

This agile approach allowed us to expand our reach to the frontlines of the war in Ukraine and provide tailored support to families reeling from the devastating floods in Kentucky, Pakistan and Brazil, as well as the food insecurity crisis spurred on by civil war in Sudan. It has also allowed us to continue adapting our long-term support in Haiti to address widespread humanitarian needs during the current civil unrest. We're so grateful to be able to do what we do, reaching the most vulnerable and marginalized people around the world," said Lee. Since the earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, unrest has been growing, which has been exacerbated due to the political climate in the country. To date, CORE has supported more than 60,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and removed more than 650,000 cubic meters of debris. The charity was also monumental amid the COVID-19 pandemic, administering more than 150,000 vaccines and tests in Haiti alone.

In addition to their work in Haiti and across the world from Türkiye to Pakistan, CORE has supported

domestic responses, including being on the ground in Kentucky during the destructive floods in August 2022 and has remained in the state ever since to work with community partners to support families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed. Almost two years after the floods, CORE is still operating in five offices with more than 30 case managers to support the community. The teams have supported more than 1,000 cases, connecting impacted community members to vital recovery resources.

WORK IN HAITI

To continue supporting the needs of the people in Haiti, CORE has launched several initiatives and programs in the country, one of which is the School of Hope and Sunshine. Originating as a school for kindergarten to sixth grade for IDPs in Petionville Club Camp, the school has found a permanent home on CORE’s Community Development Campus.

The School of Hope and Sunshine educates more than 200 students annually—19 percent of them are children with disabilities—and is one

In an era where sustainability and energy efficiency are at the forefront of societal concerns, the adoption of solar power for residential properties has emerged as a shining beacon of hope. Renewable energy solutions have begun popping up more than ever across the United States—as of 2024, approximately 4.2 million homes have been outfitted with solar energy. In Chicago and surrounding areas, homeowners are turning to Kapital Electric for home installation, and for good reason. Since 2009, Kapital Electric has served the Chicago area with not only solar panel installations but also EV charger installations, natural gas generator installations, ice-melting equipment installations, and smart home automation system installations.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SOLAR ENERGY

It's a common belief that solar panels have a lifespan of only 25 years, but this is an outdated myth—companies like Panasonic ensure their panels remain highly efficient even after that mark, sometimes up to nearly 92 percent!

Another common misconception is that Illinois isn’t a good fit for solar energy. While Illinois might not be known for its scorching sun, its cooler climate actually benefits solar panels, as they

operate more efficiently in lower temperatures. More importantly, customized solar systems here often generate far more energy than homes consume, with surplus power either feeding back into the grid or stored in batteries. In fact, investing in solar in Illinois can yield an impressive 16 to 20 percent annual return on your investment.

BENEFITS OF SOLAR ENERGY

Homeowners who have yet to transition to renewable energy sources

of the only schools in Haiti that offers inclusive education. In 2021, the school expanded to provide education up to ninth grade. CORE also puts a large focus on strategies to prevent future climaterelated devastation in Haiti. Launched during the 2015 Climate Summit that led to the Paris Agreement, CORE’s Haiti Takes Root (HTR) initiative aims to reverse 200 years of deforestation. Through programs like this one, they hope to eliminate the effects of climate change and environmental degradation on vulnerable and marginalized families who are often the ones most impacted.

WORK IN KENTUCKY

As communities in Kentucky are still recovering from the floods in August 2022, CORE has continued to provide programming to support impacted families. Their work in the area includes assessing needs, making referrals to other community partners, assisting those affected in obtaining resources, providing information on mold disease, and providing mold kits to educate homeowners.

In addition to responding to flood-related disasters, CORE is also assisting amidst Kentucky’s opioid epidemic. Attorney General Russell Coleman called the drug epidemic the public health challenge of our lifetime, noting that since 2019, overdose deaths in Kentucky have skyrocketed more than 60 percent.

CORE’s work to tackle the opioid crisis includes helping control the spread of infectious diseases; decreasing stigmatization; providing referral for prevention, treatment, and recovery; enhancing access to lifesaving resources; and providing relevant tools and resources. Similarly, CORE has been supporting seven health districts to educate families and opioid users on First Aid, CPR, and Narcan administration.

CORE remains committed to responding to the world’s most devastating crises, ensuring they stay until communities are back on their feet. The humanitarian organization hopes to build systems that better prepare the most vulnerable populations for future disaster.

may be curious about the benefits of utilizing solar power. Why should I make the switch?

Solar energy offers numerous benefits for homeowners. Namely, it provides a sustainable source of electricity, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, which ultimately lowers carbon emissions and creates a healthier environment.

Solar panels can also lower utility bills, allowing significant long-term cost savings for homeowners, increase the property value of your home, and provide energy independence and security.

Solar panels are built to last for decades with little to no maintenance—similarly, Kapital Electric assures homeowners that they use solar panels from the industry’s leading manufacturers, and all modules and flashing come with a 25-year warranty. Even in the harshest of Chicago winters, your solar panels will be secure for years to come.

COST EFFECTIVE

Solar energy isn’t just good for the environment—with Kapital Electric, it can also be good for your wallet. Switching to solar energy is incentivized, and Kapital Electric can help you take advantage of available tax credits (like the extended 30 percent federal

tax credit until 2032) and programs like Illinois Shines, which pays for up to 60 percent of your solar energy system.

Solar panels help homeowners save money by reducing electricity bills. The exact amount you can save depends on numerous factors, including the angle and size of the roof and the number of direct hours of sunlight the house gets.

Illinois’ solar industry is expecting big changes next year. Currently, the net metering offsets the supply, delivery and taxes. Right now, net metering helps balance the costs of supplying, delivering, and taxing solar power. But starting January 1st, 2025, net metering will only balance out the cost of providing solar power, not the delivery and taxes. To cover those extra costs, batteries will become more important.

Before 2025, batteries were mainly for backup during blackouts, but next year, you'll need batteries to cover delivery and taxes. During the day, you'll use solar power; at night, you'll use the stored energy from the batteries. This way, you'll rely less on your utility company for energy.

Right now, there’s even more reason to make the switch—ComEd is offering to pay up to $3,750 for EV charging installation and equipment in Energy

Star-rated single-family homes and up to $80,000 for the infrastructure in multi-unit buildings. There are also additional incentives for commercial properties and level three superchargers. Not sure if you qualify? Check the Energy Star website for up-to-date information and conditions.

STORAGE

ENERGY

Kapital Electric also offers the Tesla Powerwall, an energy storage system that can be combined with solar panels or installed into the electrical grid. This technology allows independence from the city’s electrical grid and provides increased peace of mind—no more hunting for flashlights during power outages! In addition to the Tesla Powerwall, Kapital Electric is one of the largest Elite installers in North America. Panasonic offers a 25-year parts and labor warranty and a nearly 92 percent production guarantee after 25 years—a lifetime system you can rely on. If you’re searching for ways to lower costs and be more responsible with your carbon footprint, energy systems are a great place to start.

Empowering Youth for Environmental Change Through EcoTeens

The call for action against unprecedented environmental challenges grows louder each day.

Pragna Nidumolu, the founder of EcoTeens, a platform dedicated to empowering youth engagement in environmental stewardship, is answering the call.

“My journey as an environmental advocate began with a simple belief—that small actions can lead to significant change,” she said. "In the summer of 2017, I went to India to visit family. While the destinations were spectacular, the surroundings were filled with non-biodegradable trash like plastic, glass and batteries. Everyone I talked to during my visit observed shifting seasons, which are directly linked to warmer global temperatures. I even had an opportunity to interact with fishermen in the area who shared that the fish population has declined significantly in the past decade.

“The very next year, I visited Kenya during my summer vacation. While the natural beauty of Africa was unparalleled, plastic pollution was rampant in the area. The locals shared that across Africa, unmanaged waste and pollution are becoming serious problems, having devastating effects on wildlife and communities,” she continued. “These trips had a profound impact on me. With the goal of helping my local community, I joined the program 'Adopt-a-Highway,' which aims to help keep roadsides clean. Through this program, I realized that it’s not just adults who are responsible and accountable for keeping our planet healthy—it’s on all of us to help.”

A social entrepreneur passionate about sustainability, Pragna founded EcoTeens with a vision to amplify the voices of teens worldwide to have the attention of businesses, lawmakers, governments, and the communities we live in.

“Through EcoTeens, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the power of collective action and the transformative impact it can have on our planet,” she said. "There are more teens in the world than ever before: 1.2 billion, totaling one-sixth of the global population. I decided to embark on a journey to rally teens across the world to call for action to make our communities, businesses, and practices more sustainable.”

Pragna believes that teens today have incredible potential to change things in the world. Generation Z has been shown to be the most future-oriented generation in history. With Pragna at the helm, EcoTeens rallies teens

worldwide to call for action to make communities, businesses, and practices more sustainable.

“In a recent interview with the Earth911 podcast, I had the privilege of sharing my perspectives on how youth can take the lead in addressing the challenges of climate change and assume accountability as the inheritors of the planet,” she explained. “This conversation was an opportunity to amplify the voices of young people and underscore the critical role they play in driving environmental action and shaping the future of our planet.”

Pragna hosts a podcast series called “The Green Stories,” where she brings together impactful

speakers worldwide to engage in meaningful conversations and inspire action. Each episode is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared knowledge in driving environmental change.

“I've had the honor of organizing four Global Youth Sustainability Summits (GYSS), each bringing together over 50 speakers from 35 countries to tackle a diverse range of topics aimed at driving positive change,” she said. “These summits serve as dynamic platforms for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and collective action, uniting changemakers from around the globe in the shared pursuit of a more sustainable future.”

During Women’s History Month, Pragna was published in WomELLE Magazine, where her work was highlighted as an example of the positive effect of grassroots initiatives like EcoTeens in driving positive change. She was also invited to the UN CSW 2024 (Commission on the Status of Women), where she spoke about how young women can engage in sustainability dialogue.

As the owner and leader of the "+The Cap” Campaign for Million Voices, the intersection of sustainability and youth action hits home for Pragna. Among her list of climate change initiatives, +The Cap is among the simplest: keep the bottle cap on before recycling plastic bottles. This seemingly small action can significantly reduce plastic pollution and increase recycling rates. By keeping the cap on, we prevent it from becoming separated from the bottle during the recycling process, making it easier to capture and recycle both components effectively.

As an ambassador for the Sustainable Practices and Solutions Community (SPSC), Pragna is proud to be part of a global movement dedicated to enhancing sustainability by integrating UN principles and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets.

“I am honored to be recognized as one of America's ‘Top 18 under 18’ for my sustainability efforts, a testament to the impact of grassroots initiatives like EcoTeens,” she continued. “Additionally, I had the privilege of being the youngest speaker ever at the Agile Alliance World Conference 2023, where I shared insights on the intersection of Corporate Sustainability through the Gen-Z lens. On every platform and through every opportunity, my message is the same: sustainability starts with youth.”

Unlocking Potential: The Power of Literacy and Community Engagement

Learning doesn’t stop in the classroom, so why should literacy? Beyond skill-building, learning to read can be a fundamental act of identity, agency, and joy. Even better, it’s a skill that can be enjoyed as a bonding activity.

The Children's Literacy Initiative (CLI) is dedicated to working with Prekindergarten through Eighth Grade teachers to create an environment where children can not only learn to read, but also foster a love for reading. Through one-on-one embedded teacher coaching, training in anti-racist best practices, leadership development, and the provision of high-quality classroom books and materials, CLI is helping educators adopt high-impact and culturally sustaining instructional strategies. It’s a holistic approach that starts with the head of the classroom to benefit the entire school community. By empowering educators and nurturing professional learning communities that foster lasting, impactful change, they build lasting capacity in teachers, principals, and school systems to advance equity in education—so everyone can benefit from a love of reading.

instructional strategies support it.

For CLI, this process starts in the classroom—even better, it starts with books.

The books children encounter in the classroom have a profound and lasting impact on their perceptions of themselves and the world around them. At these pivotal ages, it’s more important than ever to establish self-confidence and the ability to use critical thinking to understand and navigate the world. That’s why CLI is committed to provid

messages such as "You matter," "You are important," "You belong here," and "You can bring about change." By featuring books that center on Black and Latinx children and other marginalized groups, CLI ensures that every child sees themselves reflected in the stories they read and understands that their knowledge, strengths, and skills are valued. But it’s not just kids who can benefit from these messages—when shared with parents and caregivers, these books can set the groundwork for positive conversations around self-love and cultural joy, all while reinforcing the literary skills learned at school. The cognitive and social benefits of engaging with authentic texts are impressive, making the need for them that much more important. Operating from an understanding of the inherent inequities in education, CLI understands that many students from underserved communities lack access to age-appropriate and culturally relevant books at home and works to equip families with the resources they need to support their children's literacy development.

in underserved communities. Equally important is the role of family in nurturing a love of literacy in the home and the broader community.

Families are essential partners in a child's educational journey. Families bring diverse experiences, unique viewpoints, and contributions that enrich the school culture, and CLI schools work to welcome these contributions at every turn.

By focusing on cultivating a caring, healthy, and joyful environment through relationship building and removing barriers to full family participation, schools and families continually learn from each other, promoting meaningful communication and collaboration. It’s a collaborative effort that makes families active participants in their children's education and in shaping the school's vision and culture.

Leaning into the community, CLI has launched a collaboration with Mychal Threets, PBS Librarian in Residence, as their 2024-2025 Literacy Ambassador.

A champion for inclusive literacy practices, Mychal is an example of the joy, diversity, and identity development that

of over 800,000 followers to champion expanding CLI’s reach and impact. Through mission-driven outreach, CLI forges genuine connections with educators, parents and caregivers, policymakers, and community members, spreading the message that literacy is a tool for understanding and celebrating diverse narratives.

OPEN BOOKS OPEN DOORS

Launching in June 2024, the "Open Books Open Doors" initiative is the newest tool in CLI’s toolbelt, showcasing the organization’s belief that literacy is the key to achieving your dreams. Stories are an engaging way for children to learn about the world around them and explore their interests. This campaign is designed to provide children with access to high-quality books and the support they need to develop strong literacy skills, setting the foundation for a lifetime of learning and empowerment. Reading is power, and together, we can harness that power to unlock the limitless potential within every child—it all starts with literacy.

Help Chicago’s Chinatown Build a Sustainable Future

Did you know Chicago’s Chinatown is the only growing Chinatown in the country?

This cultural gem is steadily growing, a testament to the vibrancy, resilience, and dynamism of immigrant communities in Chicago. Even through the challenges of gentrification, economic shifts, and the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) is at the forefront of efforts to preserve and strengthen Chicago’s Chinatown.

PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE

Since the beginning of CBCAC in 1998, the organization has been a powerful advocate for the Chinese American community in Greater Chicago. From championing voting rights and civic engagement to spearheading community planning initiatives, CBCAC has been instrumental in shaping the trajectory of Chinatown’s development. Over the years, while their commitment to growth has remained, their focus has evolved to address pressing issues like digital equity, youth empowerment, and small business sustainability.

The landscape of Chicago’s Chinatown has undergone significant transformation in recent years.

The pandemic shuttered many beloved local businesses, damaging the community's cultural fabric. However, true to its roots, CBCAC knows that revitalizing a community starts from within. By fostering locally invested businesses and enhancing accessibility through small business activation programs and placemaking initiatives, the organization is on a mission to reclaim Chinatown’s identity as a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly haven.

A COMMUNITY SUPERPOWER

Community-driven solutions are at the heart of CBCAC. Their collaborative efforts have led to

incredible results, from securing grants for digital literacy programs for seniors and new immigrants to initiating the Chinatown Vision Plan in partnership with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

One of CBCAC’s most impactful community initiatives is its ongoing efforts to revitalize Chinatown’s commercial landscape. CBCAC has partnered with the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) to launch the Storefront Activation Program: CanalPOP!, an innovative initiative that aims to empower small businesses, combat gentrification,

and preserve Chinatown's cultural uniqueness. Located at 2238 S. Canal Street, CanalPOP! brings the three neighborhoods together in one location. Its balance of subsidized retail space and entrepreneurship support nurtures a new generation of AAPI entrepreneurs, fostering economic diversity and vitality at the same time. The program's vision is to transform the commercial landscape of Chinatown into a district where people can enjoy delicious cuisine and engage with cultural heritage, while enjoying fashionable retail stores. The storefront will feature four fashion shops, two ceramics, and one small-business tea vendor. The initiative is dedicated to uplifting small businesses, and to do so, they will host special markets, festivals celebrating Chinese culture, and seminars for businesses to scale up and grow their business in the right way.

A CULTURAL GEM

The path to sustainability lies in collective action and collaboration, and CBCAC is well-versed in both of those areas. A significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability came with the designation of Chinatown as a State Cultural District. This recognition

not only celebrates Chinatown’s rich heritage but also opens doors to vital resources and support to preserve local businesses, prevent the displacement of current residents, and strengthen the area’s economic growth.

Between CBCAC’s focus on economic development, anti-displacement measures, affordable housing, and transportation improvements, Chinatown’s future is bright, full of inclusive growth and opportunity. The best part is that community endeavors are made stronger when more of the community is involved—the more, the merrier, which means you can get involved too!

Whether donating, volunteering, supporting local businesses, or simply spreading the word, your support helps preserve Chinatown’s heritage and foster a thriving community for generations to come.

Visit cbcacchicago.org/donate to support our efforts and make a meaningful difference in Chinatown's future. Follow us on Instagram @cbcacchicago for the latest updates and opportunities to get involved. Let’s build a sustainable future for Chinatown together.

Leading the Fight Against Avoidable Blindness in Africa

The Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology (KCCO) is on a mission to eliminate avoidable blindness in Africa.

Established in 2001, this unique organization envisions a future where all Africans can access high-quality, patient-centered eye care provided by Africans in well-functioning systems.

KCCO combines clinical ophthalmology with public health principles and applied research to tackle the burden of visual impairment and enhance overall eye health in underserved populations, particularly in rural and low-income areas where they are needed most.

EYE CARE TRANSFORMS

LIVES: SARAH’S STORY

Globally, an estimated 1.4 million children are blind, with many more suffering from visual impairment. The burden is exceptionally high in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where childhood cataract is a significant but treatable cause of blindness. KCCO research has also shown that there is a gender gap, with girls receiving services at a later age than boys and receiving less follow-up than boys. Early identification and treatment are crucial, yet many children in SSA remain undiagnosed for years.

KCCO's childhood blindness

programs focus on detecting and treating cataracts in children as early as possible. Early surgery significantly improves visual outcomes for congenital cataracts. To facilitate early detection, KCCO trains community volunteers and primary care staff as “cataract case finders” who refer suspected cases to specialized pediatric eye care facilities. Outreach screening camps are also conducted at the community level when dedicated funding is available.

Sarah, a young girl from Uganda, is an example of how transformative KCCO's work can be. Diagnosed with congenital bilateral cataracts, Sarah's parents noticed issues with her sight and white spots in her eyes shortly after

birth. They were unaware that Sarah had cataracts.

Thanks to a primary care worker’s referral, Sarah underwent cataract surgery at the age of three at the Benedictine Eye Hospital in Tororo. The surgery restored Sarah’s sight, allowing her to perform everyday tasks and play with her friends without difficulty.

“As a family, we are happy because our girl can now see,” said Sarah’s mother.

With the help of KCCO, Sarah received specialized care and her sight was saved.

However, many children remain undiagnosed due to insufficient resources for training and outreach, demonstrating the need for expanded support. KCCO works

diligently to remove the barriers to cataract treatment.

When donor funding is available, surgeries are performed at no cost to families, and transportation expenses for follow-up visits are covered. Follow-up care is critical, as children often need glasses and further management, especially if operated on at a later age.

Proper treatment and follow-up enable many children to achieve excellent vision and integrate into regular schools by age five. Sarah’s follow-up care, including the provision of glasses, was supported by grants from USAID and the Seva Foundation.

“On behalf of Benedictine Eye Hospital, parents, and children served

by our childhood blindness program, I sincerely thank KCCO for enabling us to deliver eye care to our community's most vulnerable,” said Dr. Proscovia Arach, a pediatric ophthalmologist.

KCCO'S APPROACH

KCCO is a leader in implementing comprehensive childhood blindness activities in Africa. The organization has produced manuals on preventing and managing childhood blindness in developing countries, with more information available at kcco.net. With support from various organizations, KCCO implements strategies to: Identify and refer children who need help early, Support families before and after cataract surgery, Ensure girls receive the same services and opportunities as boys, Strengthen local hospitals.

KCCO currently supports pediatric eye care programs in Burundi, Madagascar, Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda. Due to a lack of funding, many areas remain underserved, and KCCO is working to expand their services further, providing eye care to children in need. With transformative eye care from KCCO, every child has the chance to see a brighter future.

Project Onward: 20 Years of Empowering Artists and Changing Perceptions

Art is a tool for empowerment—the act of expressing yourself creatively goes beyond labels or experience. At Project Onward, all participants are artists first and foremost.

Since 2004, this unique studio and gallery space has been dedicated to empowering adult artists living with developmental disabilities and men

tal illness. But it's not just about providing a space to create—it's about fostering a community where artists can thrive, challenge stereotypes, and redefine what it means to be an artist.

“The only labels we use are contemporary, abstract, fiber, digital and ceramic artists,” said Nancy Gomez, Executive Director. “It’s only when asking for grants and donations, we’re impelled to say neurodiverse artists because after all, it’s our mission to challenge the narrative that says adults with disabilities and mental illness are different or incapable of living their lives as artists.”

Project Onward is dedicated to providing artists with the very best— from its beautiful studio space to quality art materials, guidance, and access to markets in order to sell their art and earn an income. The artists are provided with the

opportunity to create their work in a safe, supportive studio environment, with access to workspace, materials, and professional guidance without being encumbered by cost. It’s all about the act of creative expression, at no cost to the artist!

But Project Onward is more than just a studio—it's a platform for change. Project Onward strives to inspire change by using art to promote empathy and reduce the stigma of mental illness and developmental disabilities. Through professional exhibitions, public programs, workshops, and portrait slams, the studio and gallery connect artists with the wider arts community and the general public, promoting audience participation and giving artists the opportunity to showcase and sell their work.

The non-profit studio is inclusive and embraces artists with a wide range of life experiences. Some are self-taught artists who have autism, while some are formally trained with bipolar disorder. There are other artists with challenges that are equally complex, however, all of them willingly explore the innermost recesses of their minds to create powerful works of art.

“We seek to improve the

to tell their stories and change their perceptions of the world.”

The impact of Project Onward doesn’t end in the studio or on the canvas. The artwork created here has found its way into private and corporate collections around the world, including prestigious institutions like the Obama Foundation in D.C., the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, and the Museum van de Geest in Amsterdam. Each piece tells a story, challenges perceptions, and gives voice to the artists who created it.

This year marks 20 years of Project Onward, and the organization is showing no signs of slowing down!

With your support, whether through donations, becoming a member, attending exhibitions, or scheduling a tour of the studio, you can join us in our mission to empower artists, change perceptions, and build a more inclusive world—one brushstroke at a time.

Tasting the Flavors of Guatemala: Chef Mirciny Moliviatis’ Quest to Rediscover Her Roots

Chef Mirciny "Misha" Moliviatis says that food always has a story.

Born and raised in Guatemala, Moliviatis grew up in a food-loving family of restauranteurs, with 28 years of experience running 10 restaurants around the country.

While Moliviatis and her siblings grew up surrounded by food, even working at one of her father's restaurants, her journey to become one of Guatemala’s most famous chefs didn’t start until she began working at elBulli, a restaurant in Spain—a feat in itself, as there were over 5,000 applicants at the time.

Studying under experienced and well-known chefs like Ferran Adria, Moliviatis recalled that the days were grueling—she was one woman among a class of 49 men, and all 50 of them were on a mission to achieve perfection. Still, those days taught her invaluable lessons about hard work, discipline, and, most importantly, that the role of a chef spans far

beyond the kitchen.

During this time, Moliviatis made another discovery: even though she had grown up in Guatemala, she didn’t know much about the country’s cuisine. She shared that even when she returned home to Guatemala after school, she infused her cooking with techniques she had learned in Spain, seeking out flavors and ingredients from around the world. It was only when she realized that the flavors she sought could be found in her local markets that her mission became clear.

Enamored with the abundance of flavors that were available in her country, she understood that just as she was unaware of how much there was to discover about Guatemalan food, others would be as well. Even as she researched, there was little information to be found—and so she took it into her own hands.

“A friend and I started a TV show that was called El Sabor de mi Tierra [The Taste of My Land] and started

traveling around the country,” Moliviatis explained. “We didn’t have a script or a plan; we just traveled. It was so much fun. We sought out the ‘real cooks’ of Guatemala and learned their techniques, how they worked the land, how they used their tools to create food.”

As Moliviatis explored flavors and dishes she’d never tried before, she understood that many of them were from Mayan times— traditional dishes passed down through many generations.

“Food tells you a story. Behind each dish or each ingredient, there is a story of ancestral cuisine that is still alive and latent, culinary techniques that continue to be used after thousands of years since creation,” she shared.

“In Guatemala, we come from an ancient civilization, the Maya, and we have so much history and culture infused into our food. When people think of Latin America, they think of Mexico and South America, but Central America is amazing.

We’re small countries, but we have a lot to share.”

Moliviatis realized that she had the power to amplify the voices of Guatemalan people and was able to share the beauty of Guatemala through food. Through her shows, Puro Chef and Desafío Culinario and her award-winning book, Viviendo la Receta Guatemala Moliviatis achieved this mission, making a name for herself as a talented and creative chef while making the beauty and flavors of Guatemala known.

Moliviatis was appointed the Ambassador of Guatemalan Gastronomic Culture, a role that she has embraced wholeheartedly.

“Food is one of the best expressions of culture that a country has, and the best teachers are the people in the field,” she said.

Misericordia: A National Leader Dedicated to People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

For more than 100 years, Misericordia has been helping Chicagoans in need. Located on a 37-acre campus on Chicago’s North Side, it is one of the nation’s leading communities for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Its name means “Heart of Mercy” in Latin. Misericordia lives up to its

name daily, offering a loving, extraordinary community through a unique continuum of care and life-enriching programs for 600 residents. These residents come from diverse religious beliefs, races, ethnic groups, and cultures.

Misericordia’s goal is based on the simple belief that each

person—regardless of their abilities—should live as fulfilled, independent and meaningful a life as possible. Its homes and programs are designed to make this happen. Through Catholic values and traditions, Misericordia is a diverse and inclusive community that promotes acceptance, respect, dignity, spirituality and quality of life for all.

MEETING AN ENORMOUS

UNMET NEED

For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the unmet need for residential options and programs like those Misericordia offers is overwhelming. Across the State of Illinois alone, tens of thousands are on waiting lists.

And yet, for families with a child who is intellectually or developmentally disabled, the worry of who will be there to care for their loved ones as they grow older is of great concern. With the help of 1,200 employees, Misericordia offers peace of mind to some of these families as it meets their loved one’s needs—and changing needs as they grow older. Its on-campus homes include more

than 20 residential areas, ranging from apartments and intermediate care facilities to the Mother McAuley Skilled Nursing Residence. Misericordia residents also enjoy homes in 15 Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILAs) located in neighboring communities.

On a typical day, its residents wake up with a purpose. They are busy all day long—traversing its campus and the City of Chicago to get to jobs and schools, creating works of art in studio workshops, singing and dancing in performance groups, working out at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, going to on-campus medical and dental appointments, and so much more. Most people take activities like these for granted, but Misericordia’s children and adults depend on others to help them experience their day.

ENSURING MISERICORDIA

WELL INTO THE FUTURE

Misericordia’s ability to offer high-quality care comes at an enormous cost. Every year, the difference between the government funds it receives and its actual program costs continues growing, reaching

$34 million this year alone. Families do not pay for their most vulnerable family members to live at Misericordia. Still, they are asked to stay actively involved in their lives through volunteering, home visits, and fundraising.

With hundreds of families waiting for Misericordia’s services, the organization has ambitious expansion plans for new residences and programs—all in an effort to serve as many families in need today and those who will need Misericordia well into the future. Over the years, Misericordia has become a vibrant, close-knit community of friendship and inspiration among the residents, devoted families, and generous friends and supporters across the country. Its success reflects the generosity of people who want to make a difference and who have found their way to Misericordia.

Marching for Freedom: Juneteenth and the Power of Voting

This summer marks another year of commemorating Juneteenth and reflecting on the meaning of freedom. From June 19th to July 4th, we have had the opportunity to participate in a journey that both honors our past and brings us closer to a future where every voice is heard, and every vote counts. For that reason, the journey from Juneteenth to July 4th is particularly symbolic. While July 4th symbolizes the freeing of the land and establishing the founding principles of democracy in the United States, Juneteenth represents the freeing and liberation of the people who live on it. By linking these two dates, we are reminded that the fight for freedom is ongoing and that true independence is achieved when everyone can exercise their rights fully.

OPAL'S WALK FOR FREEDOM

to unity. And with $6.19 of every registration going towards the National Juneteenth Museum, you're also supporting the preservation of history for future generations.”

As Ms. Opal puts it: "Juneteenth means freedom, and freedom is for everyone every day."

VOTING IS POWER

As we approach another election cycle, it is crucial to remember the power of our vote. Juneteenth reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy today were hard-won and must be actively defended. Voting is a fundamental right and a powerful tool for making change. While registering to vote is a crucial first step, our impact as individuals relies on getting to the polls and voting with conscience.

Since accomplishing the goal of achieving the recognition of a national holiday, Ms. Opal continues to walk annually to educate the nation on the relevance of Juneteenth and the freedom it represents. “I just want people to know that Juneteenth can be a unifier,” said Ms. Opal. "If people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love."

At 97 years old, Ms. Opal Lee, a distinguished social impact leader, continues to champion Juneteenth, raising awareness and excitement to ensure that it is recognized and celebrated as a national holiday. Known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Ms. Opal has dedicated her life to educating others about the importance of this day, which marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.

Her annual walk, Opal's Walk for Freedom, is a powerful symbol of the journey toward true freedom for all Americans. Through her work with Unity Unlimited, Inc., and with the support of her granddaughter, Dione Sims, Ms. Opal now has programs serving returning citizens, the jobless, and the hungry. She leads her work with a focus on unity and love.

At the same time, Opal's Walk for Freedom has expanded far beyond Fort Worth. This year, Opal's Walk included events in Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, and, for the first time, an international host city, Tokyo, Japan. Sims explained, “Juneteenth is not just about the past—it's about the future. It's about building a more just and equitable society for generations to come. By participating in Opal's Walk for Freedom, you're making a statement. You're saying yes to equality, yes to justice, and yes

"Juneteenth is for everyone. It's not just for Texans, not just for Blacks,” said Ms. Opal. “Remember, July 4th freed the land, Juneteenth freed the people. Juneteenth can be the bridge that unites our nation."

Nestled in the heart of La Antigua, Guatemala, lies a hidden gem—Casa Santo Domingo. This remarkable destination is not just a hotel but also a museum and SPA complex. From the outside, it is a sight to behold, with decades of care taken to preserve it.

In 1979, UNESCO declared the colonial city of La Antigua a World Cultural Heritage Site, turning it into a recognized treasure of exceptional value—and one that Casa Santo Domingo proudly puts on display. Long before it was a hotel, the area was home to The Convent of Santo Domingo, one of Guatemala's largest and richest conventual areas, housing many friars, novices, and service personnel. The fountain of Santo Domingo, built by Father

Felix de Mata, was one of the largest and most elegant of its time, decorated with tiles from Genova.

The earthquakes of Santa Marta in 1773 destroyed both monuments almost entirely.

The hotel's story dates back to 1989, when current owner Diego Castañeda's father arrived in La Antigua and started buying properties, including a 16thcentury convent that had been closed down in the 1970s. The Castañedas, with the help of archaeologists, professionals, specialists, and architects, were able to rescue elements of the Convent and Temple that had been buried in the 1773 earthquakes.

They found the buildings rich in history, each a puzzle piece

signifying the centuries of culture. This led to the creation of eight museums and two art galleries within the complex.

The hotel itself is a thing of beauty, infused with art from the galleries in each room, making every stay unique and enriching. The hotel is not just a tourist destination but also an important part of the local community. Its Mosaico Cultural Program showcases the art and culture of the community, with exhibits that change from month to month to showcase local artists. Casa Santo Domingo is also committed to responsible and eco-friendly practices, including a watertreatment plant, a recycling program, and a ceramic tile factory

where every tile is hand-painted. During the building process, the Castañedas came across many pieces and artifacts, which they carefully preserved to share the record of what was once the Convent of Santo Domingo. What truly draws visitors to Casa Santo Domingo is the mix of location, culture, food, history, nature, spa, and art. The artistic world in Guatemala is incredible and creative, and the hotel's staff makes the experience even more lovely. When it comes to dining, guests can expect a fine dining experience. The hotel restaurant is a food destination in itself, with touches of Guatemalan ingredients inspired by local flavors and locally grown herbs and vegetables.

Casa Santo Domingo is also an international wedding location, especially for destination weddings. The hotel's event planning team ensures that every wedding is unique and special, with everything planned through the hotel. Casa Santo Domingo is a destination that offers something unique and special. It's a hotel that showcases the region's art, culture, and history, providing guests with an unforgettable experience. Whether you're looking for a relaxing spa vacation, a foodie adventure, or a destination wedding, Casa Santo Domingo has something for everyone.

Award-winning Canadian explorer and author Jeff Fuchs was made for adventure.

Growing up, Fuchs spent his time between Canada and Switzerland, where he developed a love of mountains and climbing. As a child, his father inspired him to be inquisitive, always searching for the stories and histories behind everything that

crossed his path. His grandmother echoed that sentiment, encouraging his adventurous nature and teaching him that getting lost did not have to be bad—it could also be a way to learn.

Known for his extensive travels to remote and isolated regions of the world, Fuchs’ love for people is what drives his adventurous spirit, honoring those who share their

wisdom and experiences with him.

In all of his expeditions, Fuchs holds that the art of listening is an essential skill; the great stories of life are found through simple conversations. Wherever his travels take him, he keeps a simple mandate in mind: always giving more than he takes and never taking more than he needs.

A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE AMAZON

A natural nomad, Fuchs credits his skepticism both to his grandmother and to a learned wariness from two decades of traveling through mountainous terrain. Fuchs spent 10 years living in Yunnan, China, studying the origins of tea on a mission to become the first Westerner to trek the entire Yunnan–Tibet Ancient Tea Horse Road, an ancient six-thousand-kilometer trade route. On this journey, Fuchs discovered that his best tool was his willingness to adapt to new

"Leanne is wise to the fact that in order for good things to happen, it is often necessary to fade a bit into the background to encourage others,” Fuchs explained. “Not one to ever step in and take credit, she consistently pointed the light upon those on the ground. Juan Alan has a kind energy, a sense of humor, and the ability to unleash it when least expected.”

Fuchs approached with cynicism but found that time after time, the on-the-ground work he witnessed emphasized the idea that

Historically, the Amazon has been seen as a hotspot for thrillseekers—the chance to get up close and personal with wildlife is one of the main reasons people visit the region—but the region’s travel landscape has been on the mend in recent years. One of the most biodiverse areas on the planet and home to the world's largest rainforest, the Amazon’s ecosystem supports nearly a third of the world's terrestrial species. It stands to reason that a place with so much natural beauty would prioritize conservation.

“Travel is about choice, and the choices are expanding,” Fuchs shared. “Travel experiences can now be something as simple as sitting with elders, cooking by the fire with locals, or choosing which animal sanctuary to go to. What locals have always done well is take time to sit down, have conversations, and build consensus amongst the community—a skill that we perhaps all need some reminding of.”

The rising interest in sustainable tourism has shifted the travel landscape, spotlighting tourist experiences that put the environment first. Rich in natural and cultural wealth, the Amazon has become a hub for eco-tourism, recognizing that it’s possible to prioritize sustainability while delivering inspiring and beautiful

Amazon. Designed and operated by Diego and Marlene Samper, the hotel is a laboratory for a sustainable Amazon settlement.

Designed and built by locals, with locals in mind, Calanoa is a community endeavor that continuously puts the community first. Calanoa also champions sustainability: every part of the lodge comes from the jungle, from the materials used in building the structure to the replanting of the trees and palms used for the future maintenance of the buildings, and even the roofs, woven from palms. Fuchs shared that one of his most memorable experiences was walking through the Calanoa Natural Reserve with Melisiades, the resident medicine man.

The silence of the jungle was only broken by Melisiades' quiet understanding of its surroundings.

Fuchs felt that Melisiades knew all the answers to every question and allowed the jungle and its sensory impacts to introduce themselves without the need for words. While the world is full of beautiful places, the people who care for them, like Melisiades and the Sampers, are often the ones who make them so awe-inspiring.

a mission to educate travelers and local communities about conservation and sustainability.

“Barajas was as eloquent a spokesperson and defender of the wild as one could wish for,” Fuchs said, recalling the almost unrealistically beautiful monkeys that swung from the trees and landed on his shoulders, their movements unpredictable, exciting, and natural.

Barajas explained that the Maikuchiga Sanctuary, founded by conservationist and primatologist Dr. Sara Bennett, was created when the local Mocagua community realized they were negatively impacting the local wildlife.

“The Sanctuary’s purpose has always been to take animals, primarily monkeys, and give them a space where they can get better,” he said. “They can prepare themselves to leave, go back into the forest. They've also realized the message that I try to teach to all my guests: What you're willing to spend money on as a tourist will affect how people will interact with their own environment. Here, the monkeys may not come down tomorrow. They might stay up in the trees, and nobody will force them to come down.”

every direction.

“So much of what is simple intuitive thinking on the part of locals is necessary for the rest of the world to adopt,” Fuchs said of the shift to conservation-focused tourism in the region.

“The Amazon and its life cannot forget the darkness that pervades its history, but as they move into the future, we see that there is goodness too,” he continued. “Actions—however subtle—can be something positive. On our Colombian journey, it was a case of witnessing deeds rather than words, revealing some of the understated people who simply do for others, and to encourage people to revel in the small contributions that one can make, however that manifests.”

Simple acts of kindness and generosity can profoundly impact those around us and the world. Fuchs said his grandmother had it right when she taught him, "sometimes you simply have to do something."

compound of cabins designed and built with locals in mind.

Calanoa: Paradise in the Jungle

The Sampers met on a science and research expedition in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park in 1980 and settled in the Colombian Amazon soon after falling in love. They founded the first Calanoa here, a self-sufficient farm where they lived and worked on conservation projects. In 1988, the Colombian drug wars forced the Sampers and their daughters to flee. A decade later, they migrated to Canada, but their love of the country stayed strong. Ten years ago, the family returned to the Amazon with a mission in mind: rebuild Calanoa, better and stronger than ever.

A COMMUNITY PROJECT

Diego designed the eight-cabin lodge, combining traditional techniques with a contemporary approach, and enlisted the help of locals of the Mocagua community to bring their dream to life. A community endeavor, the locals are as much a part of the magic of Calanoa as the art, and as such, the hotel has invested in their home region time and time again. In creating Calanoa, carpentry classes were provided, as none of the locals had the skills needed to build. The staff is local to the region, and their passion for the jungle spreads to visitors, sharing the beauty and magic in every experience.

Every part of the jungle hotel was created with sustainability in mind, from the materials used

in building the structure to the replanting of the trees and palms used for the future maintenance of the buildings, and even the roofs, woven from palms. Rain is harvested, and the energy comes from solar panels. The team made use of local materials and resources, keeping each part of the process as sustainable as possible. Everything is from the jungle, and each aspect is unique. The architecture enhances the experience: ethereal walls and light spaces improve the natural air circulation, allowing visitors to open their senses to the jungle without limits. This is all by design; Calanoa is both a living work of art and a place to educate guests on the importance of conservation.

A space of alternative educational processes, the jungle lodge seeks to contribute to the conservation of the biological and cultural diversity of the Amazon region through art, design, architecture, scientific research, community education, and sustainable tourism.

Residences, workshops, and

multidisciplinary projects, including cultural activities, make Calanoa a place of luxury and learning, an immersive dive into the power of alternative energies and the beauty of living off the land.

THE CALANOA FOUNDATION

For more than a decade, Calanoa has contributed to the conservation of the biological and cultural diversity of the Colombian Amazon in the Indigenous territories near the reserve, Tikuna, Cocama, Huitoto, and Yagua.

The Foundation seeks to enrich the local communities, using funding from the hotel to support community projects and participate in the conservation and recovery of ancestral knowledge and cultural practices. Currently, the Foundation is seeking funds for projects like El Yacaré, a boat that travels down the Amazon River at the request of the communities, carrying books, art, and experts on carefully curated subjects for the

Amazonian population. Calanoa is also working with local experts to promote research projects that will create a biodiversity inventory of the Calanoa Reserve’s flora and fauna, creating a record of the medicinal plants found in the gardens and traditional community orchards.

The children’s choir of El Vergel, supported by Calanoa, preserves the dances, songs, and the Tikuna language. The Yacaré project contributes to conserving Indigenous languages and traditions by recording the stories and songs of the elders and generating an archive available to the communities. The Calanoa Foundation also contributes to a scholarship program for Indigenous students and provides encyclopedias and dictionaries for schools—and the students often return to contribute to Calanoa.

ART IN THE AMAZON

Art is integral to Calanoa. As artists and conservationists, the

Sampers believe that creativity is the greatest economic resource possible, and they seek to nurture it through Calanoa’s projects, combining traditional art and culture with sustainable management of forest and river resources. The result is a strengthening of cultural identity, a deeper understanding and appreciation for the land, and stronger economic well-being for the community as a whole.

Calanoa focuses on what they describe as “art for conservation,” meaning that each artistic venture contributes significantly to the community’s economic well-being, strengthening cultural and ethnic identity, and environmental conservation.

The Mural Painting in Mocagua project, in which community members paint the facades of their houses with relevant motives to each family’s Indigenous clans, is a perfect example of this mission.

The Amazon offers endless opportunities for art and learning, but Calanoa takes it one step further. In 2013, in partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Vancouver, Diego and Marlene established the Amazon Field School, offering students the opportunity to seek alternative learning opportunities in a new and exciting environment: the jungle. The Amazon Field School explores topics such as creativity, imagination and aesthetic inquiry, academic research, ecology, conservation and environmental awareness, cultural awareness, community development, and environmental design.

By the following year, several gas companies had formed, and the Indiana Natural Gas Company, one of the largest, had more than 23,000 acres leased and 475 gas-producing wells. Automobile, tin, glass, and other manufacturing companies launched and boomed, and Indiana’s legacy in glassmaking had been launched.

Firms such as the Indiana Glass Company in Dunkirk devoted their plants to producing pressed and blown decorative glass—a morethan-worthy endeavor, as the need for functional glass was quickly rising. More and more glass factories opened their doors, and Indiana’s glass fortunes expanded statewide.

In fact, did you know that the Root Glass Company designed and produced the original Coca-Cola bottles in Terre Haute? But that’s not all—today, Indiana’s highest-profile functional glassmaker is just outside Muncie, in Dunkirk.

Ardagh, founded in Dublin in 1932 as the Irish Glass Bottle Company, now operates in 26 countries, employs 22,000 people, and produces three million longneck beer bottles daily for AB InBev, the parent company of Budweiser. That means

when you’re enjoying a cold beer on a hot day, you’re holding a piece of Indiana’s glass-blowing history.

FROM GAS WELLS TO GLASS MASTERPIECES

But Indiana's glassmaking prowess extended beyond utilitarian bottles and cans. Now, when we think of glass-blowing, we think of art—and Kokomo Opalescent Glass, founded in 1888, played a pivotal role in this shift. Indiana’s art glass community was launched in 1888 when Charles Edward Henry, a glass chemist known for glass buttons, novelties, and opalescent glass rods, heard about the gas boom in Central Indiana and took a trip to Kokomo. Within days, Kokomo Opalescent Glass was born, and with it, a new legacy of artistry. The same year Kokomo opened its doors, the first shipment of sheet glass went to Louis Tiffany. It included 600 pounds of blue and white opalescent glass. Kokomo continues to supply renowned artists like Tiffany with exquisite materials for their stained glass creations. Today, the company continues to thrive, preserving its heritage through its original “recipes” while embracing innovation in its Hot Glass Studio.

There, the company’s glass blowers create one-of-a-kind and limited edition functional and sculptural glass objects and rondels.

TAKE ON THE TRAIL

Indiana’s glass-blowing history is filled with stories like these, and there’s no better way to soak them all in than taking a tour of the Indiana Glass Trail. Dozens of Indiana glass artists, some in business for decades in and around the former Trenton Gas Field in east central Indiana, continue to thrive and have stories to share. Artists and craftsmen have created work for over a century to establish Indiana as home to remarkable, functional, and decorative glass. Connecting a trail of eight counties, the Indiana Glass Trail links today’s artists and glassrelated attractions throughout East Central Indiana, bringing together the tradition and beauty of glass art to experience it first-hand.

From artist studios and blown glass demonstrations to glass-focused festivals and glass museums and classes to the oldest glassworks in the United States, this family-friendly trail highlights it all. Glass lovers have plenty to see and do in Indiana, and the trail brings it all together!

From outdoor adventures to family-friendly events and locally grown meals, Allamakee County is not to be missed.

NATURAL WONDERS

From its rugged bluffs to its winding rivers, Allamakee County boasts a landscape unlike any other in Iowa. Thanks to its location within the Driftless Area, it’s also home to one of nature’s greatest mysteries.

The Driftless Area is a region devoid of glacial drift, which are deposits of silt, gravel and rock that glaciers would have left behind. What makes it such a mystery is that these areas are surrounded by drift—this means that glaciers once surrounded the Driftless Area but did not pass through it. As a result, this area is home to a rugged terrain that feels untouched, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts to get a good look at the abundant diversity of plants and animals that call it home.

If natural mysteries pique your interest, the Driftless Area Education & Visitor Center should be at the top of your list. A gateway to understanding the unique geology and ecology of the area, the Center hosts interpretive exhibits that delve into the cultural, recreational, and natural significance of the Driftless Region.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

The wonders of nature await at every turn in Allamakee County, with

several preserved areas, parks, and historical sites to explore.

One of Allamakee County's crown jewels is the Effigy Mounds National Monument, Iowa's only national park. With over 200 prehistoric American Indian mounds, including striking effigies shaped like bears and birds, this monument offers visitors a glimpse into the region's rich history. Hiking trails wind through the park, providing opportunities to explore these ancient relics while taking in breathtaking views of the

surrounding landscape.

Can’t get enough of outdoor adventures? The Yellow River State Forest is calling your name, with nearly 9,000 acres of rugged terrain waiting to be discovered. Known as the "Little Switzerland" of Iowa, this forest offers hiking, biking, horseback riding, and even winter sports like snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. With campgrounds nestled among the trees, it's the perfect place to reconnect with nature and unwind beneath the stars.

SCENIC DRIVES

The beauty of Allamakee County extends beyond its natural wonders to its charming communities and scenic byways. The Driftless Area Scenic Byway, voted the most scenic byway in Iowa, meanders through the county, offering travelers 100 miles of breathtaking vistas and historic landmarks. From the quaint towns of Harpers Ferry and Lansing to the picturesque landscapes of New Albin and Postville, each stop along the way is another reason to fall in love with Allamakee County's rich heritage and vibrant culture. Whether seeking a weekend getaway or a week-long escape, Allamakee County has something for everyone. From hiking to biking, fishing to shopping, and, of course, solving ancient mysteries, this hidden gem is full of activities that will have you and your family coming back for more.

Colombia is living a historic moment in its tourism industry. With a surge in international visitors, enhanced connectivity, and a newfound commitment to sustainability, the country is experiencing a tourism boom like never before.

2023 marked a milestone year for Colombia, with six million international travelers exploring the country’s beauty. Rooted in extensive research and analysis, this new slogan is an authentic snapshot of Colombia, the country of flora, fauna, cultural traditions, and ancestral knowledge. “Our country brand slogan encapsulates the country's essence, inviting travelers—whether they visit for leisure or business—to discover our beauty and potential. Whether you're drawn to its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, or immense natural richness, Colombia offers unforgettable experiences for every traveler,” said Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, the country’s promotion agency.

Luxury with Heart in Peru’s Sacred Valley

When luxury and philanthropy meet, amazing things can happen.

Just ask Petit and Franz Miribel, cofounders of Sol y Luna. This unique foundation supports communitycentric initiatives in Peru by creating one-of-a-kind luxury experiences for travelers worldwide.

When Petit and her husband Franz moved to Peru’s sacred valley in 1998, they had a vision of combining exceptional hospitality with transformative education and social programs. Driven by a passion for beauty and a need to uplift those around them, they launched the Sol y Luna foundation. Two years later, they opened Hotel Sol y Luna with 14 meticulously crafted casitas to raise funds for their foundation.

The hotel has since expanded to include Deluxe and Premium casitas, each experience more enticing than the last.

THE HOTEL: A RETREAT IN THE ANDES

Sol y Luna's 43 casitas are more than just places to stay—they are intimate sanctuaries offering extraordinary Andes Mountains vistas.

Each casita is crafted from local stone, terra cotta, and adobe brick and is surrounded by lush gardens teeming with native flora.

Superior Casitas feature private terraces perfect for enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding natural area. The indoors are just as breathtaking, with vibrant Peruvian folk art adorning the walls.

Deluxe Casitas are enhanced by wood-burning fireplaces, spacious living areas, and hand-painted murals, while Premium Casitas boast private garden terraces with Jacuzzis, vaulted ceilings, and elegant decor that includes handloomed Cusco textiles.

Guests at Sol y Luna can choose

to fill their days with adventures that

capture the spirit of the Sacred Valley.

The hotel offers unique ways to explore this historic region, from tandem paragliding that mirrors the Milky Way to horseback riding through remote villages. For those seeking relaxation, the Yacu Wasi Spa provides holistic treatments in a tranquil setting, complemented by an outdoor swimming pool, sauna, and gym.

THE FOOD: A CULINARY JOURNEY

When it comes to food, guests at Sol y Luna are spoiled for choice.

The hotel’s culinary offerings are deeply rooted in the traditions of the Sacred Valley. At Killa Wasi, guests can savor contemporary Peruvian cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients while relaxing around a traditional Peruvian hearth. Harvest-driven seasonal recipes feature Andean trout and grass-fed beef, while other dishes take your taste buds on new

adventures. Killa Wasi’s signature crispy guinea pig with Maras salt potatoes and uchucuta salsa is a local delicacy that guests are surprised to find tastes delicious.

Meanwhile, Sol y Luna’s Wayra ranch offers a relaxed dining experience with dishes cooked in wood-burning ovens. This relaxed day-to-night eatery is a feast for all the senses, with hand-crafted murals and sculptures, handpainted artisanal woodcarvings, and local terra cotta tiles and stonework.

The Chef’s Table experience allows guests to delve into the flavors of Peru, guided by the expert hand of Chef Nacho Selis. Each meal features a bespoke menu of seasonal dishes paired with curated wines.

If there’s one foodie experience to rule them all, it’s the Pachamanca, a rustic yet highly symbolic dining ritual that celebrates the cycle of life. Surrounded by the glorious Andes Mountains and Sol y Luna’s

thriving gardens, guests enjoy a quintessentially Andean banquet of local delicacies.

FOUNDATION:

THE

EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT

For over 25 years, Petit and Franz have dedicated their lives to alleviating poverty in the Sacred Valley. Their efforts have created a ripple effect of positive change, providing education, love, and hope to countless children and families.

You might look at the rural houses in the Sacred Valley and think life there must be simple, even idyllic,” said Petit. “However, the harsh reality is that all too often, extreme poverty breeds violence, alcoholism, and abuse. With no sense of hope, the light goes out in children’s eyes… At Sol y Luna, we create positive change by giving two things that all children deserve: love and education.”

In 2009, having spent the past

decade supporting local public schools, the foundation finally opened its own school. The Sol y Luna School began by offering kindergarten and the first few years of primary school. As the hotel expanded, so did the foundation. Today, this intercultural school educates nearly 163 students from kindergarten to 17 years old and offers a comprehensive curriculum, transportation, meals, and psychological support, ensuring that every child receives a holistic education.

In 2017, the first Sol y Luna students graduated, a milestone moment that began a legacy of change. Petit and Franz’s own child, Thomas, graduated from the school two years later. That same year, the foundation launched Roots & Wings, a program supporting graduates from the Sol y Luna School in further education.

Along the way, Petit and Franz found more ways to support the community. In 2015, they opened Paqari, a center for children with disabilities, and three years later, the Sol y Luna Home opened its doors. The orphanage offers a family-like, safe, and loving environment for children who have experienced abuse or abandonment so they can heal and thrive.

Nearly all of the children educated and cared for by the Sol y Luna Foundation come from backgrounds of extreme poverty. Many have experienced violence, suffered neglect or been abandoned. The Sol y Luna Foundation gives them love, support and a sense of hope for a bright future.

More than a luxurious retreat, Sol y Luna is a testament to the power of compassion and the transformative impact of education. By staying at Sol y Luna, guests not only experience the beauty of the Sacred Valley but also become part of a mission to create a brighter future for its children.

Bisbee: A Charming Blend of History, Art, and Nature

Located 90 miles southeast of Tucson and nestled among the Mule Mountains, Bisbee is the picturesque county seat of historic Cochise County. A hidden gem in the Arizona desert, this charming town offers a perfect blend of history, art, and nature.

Bisbee was founded as a mining town in the late 19th century, but it has grown into a vibrant city with a rich history and a unique character. Bisbee is a beloved cultural hub known for its artistic community, historic architecture, and stunning natural landscapes.

ARTISTRY AND HERITAGE

It’s not hard to find historic treasures in Bisbee. The town’s history is closely tied to its mining roots. In the late 1800s, the discovery of rich copper deposits in the area led to a mining boom, attracting thousands of miners and their families to the region. The town quickly grew into one of the largest cities between St. Louis and San Francisco. The mining industry brought prosperity to Bisbee, but it also brought challenges, like labor disputes and environmental issues.

One of the most significant events in Bisbee's history was the Bisbee Deportation of 1917, when over a thousand striking miners were forcibly deported by the Phelps Dodge Corporation, which owned the mines then. This had a lasting impact on the town and its residents, shaping its identity and inspiring works of art and literature—which can still

to contemporary installations and mixed-media pieces.

One of the highlights of Bisbee's art scene is the Bisbee Arts Commission's annual Bisbee Plein Air Festival. This festival attracts artists from around the country to paint the town's historic architecture and scenic landscapes en plein air. It celebrates the town's artistic heritage and offers visitors a unique opportunity to see artists at work.

A WALK THROUGH HISTORY

Bisbee is also renowned for its wellpreserved historic architecture.

The town's downtown area is a designated National Historic District, featuring a mix of Victorian, Art Deco, and Mission Revival buildings. Strolling through the streets of Bisbee feels like stepping back in time, with colorful storefronts, ornate facades, and charming alleyways waiting to be discovered.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES IN BISBEE

Bisbee isn’t just for artists and historians—it’s also a haven for nature enthusiasts!

The surrounding Mule Mountains are crisscrossed with hiking trails offering stunning views of the desert landscape. The nearby San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 350 species of birds recorded in the area.

For those looking for a more adventurous experience, the Copper Queen Mine Tour offers a fascinating glimpse into Bisbee's mining heritage. Visitors can descend into a former copper mine and learn about the challenges and triumphs of the miners who once worked there.

Whether exploring its historic streets, admiring local artwork, or hiking in the surrounding mountains, Bisbee has something for everyone. Its unique charm and welcoming community make it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the beauty and history

Tikal Go Tours: A Different View of Guatemala

Tucked away in the heart of Central America, Guatemala is a country that is often overlooked by tourists. But for those who seek to explore the beauty and richness of this land, Tikal Go Tours offers a unique and personalized way to experience Guatemala like never before. Guatemala is full of wonder, from vibrant rainforests to awe-inspiring Mayan ruins, but the region's notorious history has stopped tourists f rom experiencing its many charms. Tikal Go Tours was founded eight years ago with the goal of providing tourists with a different perspective of Guatemala.

Working with a pilot, founder Carlos Catania had the idea to start selling tours of Maya sights around the ancient city of Tikal, where he had grown up, and eventually expanded to other parts of the country, including the volcanoes and neighboring Belize.

“Here in Tikal, there is so much to see,” said Catania. “It’s a place that has its own magic. You can see hundreds of species of birds and animals and so much nature and history.”

What sets Tikal Go Tours apart from other tour companies is their focus on personalized experiences.

clients will like.”

“It’s important to us to build a community,” Catania explained.

They don't just offer tours but all the amenities needed to make your trip unforgettable, including boats and helicopters. And because they work primarily online, booking a tour is a breeze. On top of that, Tikal Go Tours is known for their commitment to building a sense of community among their employees and clients. They encourage their employees to suggest tour sites, and they build a profile of each client so that they can tailor the tour to their specific needs and interests. They want their clients to feel like friends, not just customers.

“We always say, ‘Tikal Tours doesn’t belong to any one person,’ so we want all of our employees to be part of it. They know the area very well, so they might have ideas that

And it's not just tourists who benefit from Tikal Go Tours.

Second and third-generation Guatemalans who come to explore their heritage are often moved to tears by the beauty of their home country. "We are giving them something they didn't have before," said Catania.

When asked what guests can expect from their tours, Catania emphasized that they strive to offer more than just a sightseeing experience. They want guests to leave with beautiful memories and a well-rounded understanding of what Guatemala offers. And for those who want a truly unforgettable experience, the sunrise tour of Tikal is a must-see. Starting in the wee hours of the morning, guests can witness the stars and the Maya site in perfect harmony. As the sun rises, the jungle comes alive with the sounds of monkeys and birds and the city of Tikal is bathed in a golden glow.

The volcano tour is also popular for those who prefer a cooler experience. Guests can watch the volcano erupt at night while sipping on a warm drink, taking in the unique and awe-inspiring sight.

Tikal Go Tours offers a different view of Guatemala, one that is personalized, community-driven, and unforgettable. They hope that guests leave with more than just a checklist of sights seen but with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the beauty and richness of this hidden gem of a country.

Fundación Grupo Puntacana: Pioneering Sustainable Development in the Dominican Republic

When you live in a beautiful place, it stands to reason that you would want to conserve its beauty. At least, it does for Fundación Grupo Puntacana, a pioneering non-profit organization in the Dominican Republic.

Harnessing the power of sustainable development, the Fundación has a dual mission: to protect and preserve the natural resources of the Punta Cana region while fostering opportunities that

enhance the well-being of its local communities. With white sand beaches, turquoise waters, 45-hole golf courses located on 15,000 acres of land, and pristine hotels, including the AAA 5 Diamond Tortuga Bay Hotel and The Westin Puntacana Resort & Club, Punta Cana is home to top-tier vacation experiences. Fundación Grupo Puntacana takes advantage of every opportunity to harmonize a balance between the vacation-ready developments it promotes and the community and environment that surrounds it.

THE HEART OF THE CARIBBEAN

Recognizing that Caribbean tourism's main assets are its nature and its people, the Fundación works with strategic partners across the private, public, and civil society sectors to address social and environmental challenges, from education and health to coral reef restoration and endangered species conservation. Who better, after all, to lead the preservation efforts of the Caribbean than those who call

this beautiful region home?

The foundation's commitment to sustainable tourism has not gone unnoticed. Their award-winning innovations, from community entrepreneurship to cultural preservation and waste management to ecotourism, have earned them international recognition from brands like the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), Conde Nast Traveler, Travel & Leisure, and National Geographic Traveler. These acknowledgments shine a welldeserved spotlight on the region's beauty and validate the foundation’s impressive achievements, innovative approaches, and unwavering dedication to creating a sustainable future for the Dominican Republic's tourism industry.

The foundation recently completed the renovation of its Marine Innovation Center, a state-of-the-art terrestrial coral nursery. With this renovation, the foundation has expanded its capacity to produce half a dozen species of coral on a large scale, alongside producing ornamental fish and forging partnerships to

conserve critically endangered reef fish.

Earlier this year, international aquarists participated in remodeling and implementing life support equipment for a landbased coral nursery and marine laboratory. These facilities will have the appropriate technology to guarantee coral requirements, facilitate processes, and provide optimal conditions for the massive and ex-situ cultivation of reefbuilding coral species.

The Marine Innovation Center has had two citizen science events as part of the coral restoration program, training 21 volunteers to help transplant fragments in domes. Already, around 300 corals of the Acropora cervicornis species have been successfully transplanted.

These initiatives have bolstered local fishermen to take Recreational Boat Operator courses, learning valuable information about navigation, first aid, water rescue techniques, and the importance of marine ecosystems...
