War Child Ambassador Sarah Rafferty on a Future Beyond Conflict

Dr. Samantha Nutt, Founder and President of War Child USA and War Child Canada, knows that the impact of war is felt long after the crisis ends. LIFE IN A WAR ZONE

“These are exceedingly difficult times,” explained Dr. Nutt. “Onefifth of all children in the world, 426 million, live in conflict zones. More than 115 million people have been forced from their homes—80 percent of them are women and children. They struggle not only to survive but also to access the very services needed to help them rebuild their lives and communities over the long term: education, employment, food security, and psychological support, as well as ongoing protection from violence, sexual exploitation, and abuse.” For children living in conflict zones, every day is a struggle. The things that many of us take for granted can be life-threatening for them. Conflict throws everyday life into chaos, and the uncertainty of what’s to come is a constant stressor.

The staggering number of children living in active war zones tells us that hundreds of millions of mothers around the world are also striving daily to protect their children from the devastation of war.

“Imagine what it must be like to try to look after a family while living in a war zone,” said Rafferty. “To bring your children up without access to food, education, protection, safety. To live in a hostile and dangerous environment and feel like you are entirely on your own.”

War Child uses a bold, community-driven approach to deliver programs that give children the best chance to overcome the challenges of war and grow up to see a brighter future.

“When you empower children and women and provide them with

I've learned about women in Afghanistan participating in War Child’s ‘livelihoods and skills training programs’ who continue to earn a living and provide for their families despite enormous odds."

War Child’s Mother’s Week Campaign, which ran from May 6th through May 12th, spotlighted these women.

Rafferty explained of the campaign.

“During war, women are often widowed and become the sole providers for their families. They are highly vulnerable and need programs that provide education, skills, and small business training. A mother's access to basic education improves the chances of her child living past their fifth birthday by 50 percent. These programs can ensure that vulnerable women can access income and economic opportunities crucial to their family’s survival.”

War Child supports 1.2 million women, children, and families annually. They provide numeracy and literacy classes to vulnerable women and catch-up education to children who have missed out on years of schooling. They work with

women and youth, offering skills training and small business loans so that they become less aid-dependent and lift their families out of poverty. They also protect women's and children's rights through access to justice programs. War Child also enhances public education and awareness through music and other arts-based initiatives.

“There are only so many wars to fight, whereas the possibilities for investing in reconstruction, reconciliation, democratic development, health care, and social welfare for atrisk populations are nearly infinite,” shared Dr. Nutt.

INVESTING IN A FUTURE FREE OF WAR

Humanitarian organizations often focus on the short-term needs of communities in crisis. While these measures can be incredibly helpful, they leave a gap in long-term support for addressing the conditions that contribute to violence and instability.

The difficulty, Dr. Nutt explained, is due in part to the fact that aid organizations are largely staffed and managed by foreigners, not locals. This can lead to a disconnect between the organization's employees and those who need their support.

War Child exists to bridge the gap between short-term emergency relief (primarily food, health care, water, and shelter) and long-term development programming that can help break the cycle of poverty, violence, and despair that so many are facing in war-torn communities. Even when the headlines disappear, War Child remains on the ground, knowing that the work is not over yet.

The hope is that one day, War Child will no longer be needed, and communities will be able to continue this critical work independently. For now, however, War Child’s work is far from over.

“Over the last two years, War Child has witnessed an escalation in armed violence across a number of our areas of operation, including Afghanistan, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” said Dr. Nutt. “The demand for our services and expertise continues to grow at an alarming pace, and War Child is limited by our financial resources. Foreign aid and individual

philanthropy are not merely acts of charity; they are indispensable investments in a secure future for us all. Humanitarian aid is an imperfect response to a violently imperfect world. It should not be needed, but it is. We could not do this work without the incredible support of our donors.”

Behind the Miracles: The Zakat Foundation is Sharing Goodness

Halil Demir, Executive Director and Founder of the Zakat Foundation of America, has spent the bulk of his life taking care of others. From witnessing strife in refugee camps to seeing members of his South Side Chicago community face hunger and homelessness, he has seen that poverty is far-reaching—but he’s never let that notion overshadow his love for helping and giving back. Instead, he’s used it as a motivator, creating the Zakat Foundation of America. This non-profit organization seeks to enrich and empower the lives of those facing poverty instead of only aiding them.

A LIFELONG MISSION

When Demir thinks back on some of the most impactful moments of his storied career in non-profit work, he remembers the eyes of the people he has helped—more specifically, the look of joy, relief, and, in some especially poignant moments, sadness.

“When I was a young man, still a university student, I received a call looking for someone who could represent the Red Cross in Iran and Iraq and act as a translator,” Demir recalled. “I left university and traveled between refugee camps during the first Gulf War. Millions of Kurdish refugees were living in these

camps; I remember the devastation everywhere you looked.

“Every day, I would go to the children’s camp, a large orphanage tent. I would bring gifts for the children, spend time with them, make them laugh, and they got used to seeing me. When I had to return to school, I told the children that this time would be different—I would not be returning the next day. A young girl, no more than six years old, looked up at me with her big eyes, held my hand, and asked me, ‘But if you don’t come, who will take care of me?’”

Demir shared that for the entirety of his trip home and every day after, he has thought of that question—it became the driving force of his humanitarian work.

“Today, Zakat Foundation runs orphanages, schools, universities, and life-saving clinics all over the world, helping thousands of people every day,” Demir continued. “Her words and the sadness in her eyes have never left my mind, and I have dedicated my life’s work to her and other children like her. She changed my life.”

BUILDING ENRICHMENT

The difference between assistance and aid is that empowerment is the key to lifelong, transformational

change. It’s the difference between giving a family a meal and equipping them for food-resilient farming. It’s a hand-up instead of a hand-out.

Dedicated to humanitarianism, Demir has led the Zakat Foundation through the creation of schools, orphanages, and clinics in vulnerable areas and developing nations. In Mali, where the Zakat Foundation has done powerful work, these clinics are life-saving—Demir explains that thousands of patients have walked through those doors.

Their impact on home turf is just as meaningful. From the Carolinas to Puerto Rico, the Zakat Foundation has been a crucial support system to Americans, guiding newcomers and refugees to essential aid while lending a helping hand to neighbors in need, including food, clothing, and hygiene item distributions.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Zakat Foundation worked to truck more than 1.3 million pounds of farmpicked, fresh produce from coast to coast. The Foundation mobilizes thousands of volunteers from Chicago and beyond to join in their impact, including schools, churches, and mosques, never turning away a helping hand.

WORLDWIDE IMPACT

In making sure their impact is long-lasting and self-sustaining, the Zakat Foundation has a range of programs that support wellbeing, education, and food security—the building blocks to fruitful livelihoods.

Their sustainable livelihood projects, including livestock programs, agricultural cooperatives, and vocational and entrepreneur courses in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South America, have paved the path to self-sufficiency. It has given thousands—particularly women— the means, know-how, and resources to uplift themselves, their families, and their communities to financial independence, better health and nutrition, and quality education.

Demir shared the story of the Goat Village in Mail, where the Zakat Foundation provided families with the means to start their own farms, resulting in a thriving source of cheese, bulk food, and income for the farmers.

“It’s an incredible program,” he said. “We give a coupled pair of animals to a family, and of course, they can create little animals and start a farm. It’s now referred to as the Goat Village because the goats have been so prosperous.”

Even more inspiring, the village then directed the Zakat Foundation to another nearby community—citing that they had received all the help they needed and wanted to share their blessings with others facing the same struggles.

Zakat Foundation’s growing global food security program now feeds an astonishing 10 million meals annually to those in need, including 10 million pounds of meat in 44 countries. In addition, they build and install water wells and pumps, engineering self-sustaining potable water sources for dozens of communities worldwide.

Through it all, Demir turns his thanks towards the donors who make it all possible.

“Americans are very generous people,” he said. “We don't have millionaires and billionaires supporting us, but truly generous everyday people who want to help others and trust that our organization wants to make that happen. To us, every penny is sacred.”

Limbs for Life Foundation

Imagine the unthinkable tragedy of being hit by a distracted driver while standing on the side of the road. Now, try and imagine being hit by that distracted driver and watching your father die before your eyes while you sustain a life-changing injury of an above-the-knee amputation. It is almost more than one can comprehend. That is what happened to Richie Horvat on October 5, 2023, while driving to work. Richie ran out of gas and called his father to come help him when a distracted driver ran off the road on I-35 outside of Fort Worth, hitting them and changing Richie’s world. With no insurance and no resources, Richie’s wife, then fiancée, Maryann Davis, was directed to the Limbs for Life Foundation (LFL) in Oklahoma City.

Randy Titony, Executive Director of the Foundation, recalled the Facebook message he received. Titony stated, “Maryann reached out in shock with no idea what she needed, nor where to get help. I responded immediately and told her they had come to the right place. Richie’s situation is why we exist.”

Through the kindness of strangers, Richie was able to receive the much-needed help from LFL and obtain his prosthesis. He stated, “Amazing people to work with, making everything easier since my amputation. Randy answers all my questions. They

have given my wife and me hope; so much so, that someday, I hope to help people like me.”

Since its inception in 1995, the Limbs for Life Foundation has been dedicated to the mission of assisting individuals who lack access to

prosthetic care due to financial constraints. Titony stated, “Our mission is simple yet profound: to provide fully functional lower limb prosthetics for those who would otherwise be unable to afford them. In doing so, we enable individuals to regain their mobility, independence, and the confidence to embrace life’s opportunities. Our impact is immediate and life-changing. We enable people who have no other possibilities for funding to receive a prosthesis and literally get back on their feet.”

A prosthesis can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000, and through partnerships with hundreds of prosthetic facilities across the U.S., LFL can fund a patient locally in their community.

From Haiti to Kentucky: CORE’s Mission Knows No Boundaries

Established following the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010, CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) has been dedicated to supporting communities in times of crisis. For nearly 15 years, CORE has found themselves thrust into the most dire situations, ranging from war in Ukraine, earthquakes in Türkiye, flooding in Kentucky, and more, helping some 10 million people in 27 regions worldwide.

The organization, co-founded by Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn and humanitarian leader Ann Lee, brings immediate response and recovery to underserved communities after disaster strikes and works within the community to build long-term resilience.

"Since CORE's inception after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, our approach has been to provide critical humanitarian relief for communities who need it most by listening, learning and taking action. A willingness to take calculated risks and to constantly adapt has fueled our growth as an organization and allows us to remain nimble to respond to urgent needs around the globe.

This agile approach allowed us to expand our reach to the frontlines of the war in Ukraine and provide tailored support to families reeling from the devastating floods in Kentucky, Pakistan and Brazil, as well as the food insecurity crisis spurred on by civil war in Sudan. It has also allowed us to continue adapting our long-term support in Haiti to address widespread humanitarian needs during the current civil unrest. The charity was also monumental amid the COVID-19 pandemic, administering more than 150,000 vaccines and tests in Haiti alone.

domestic responses, including being on the ground in Kentucky during the destructive floods in August 2022 and has remained in the state ever since to work with community partners to support families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed. Almost two years after the floods, CORE is still operating in five offices with more than 30 case managers to support the community. The teams have supported more than 1,000 cases, connecting impacted community members to vital recovery resources.

WORK IN HAITI

To continue supporting the needs of the people in Haiti, CORE has launched several initiatives and programs in the country, one of which is the School of Hope and Sunshine. Originating as a school for kindergarten to sixth grade for IDPs in Petionville Club Camp, the school has found a permanent home on CORE’s Community Development Campus.

In addition to responding to flood-related disasters, CORE is also assisting amidst Kentucky’s opioid epidemic. Attorney General Russell Coleman called the drug epidemic the public health challenge of our lifetime, noting that since 2019, overdose deaths in Kentucky have skyrocketed more than 60 percent.

CORE’s work to tackle the opioid crisis includes helping control the spread of infectious diseases; decreasing stigmatization; providing referral for prevention, treatment, and recovery; enhancing access to lifesaving resources; and providing relevant tools and resources. Similarly, CORE has been supporting seven health districts to educate families and opioid users on First Aid, CPR, and Narcan administration.

The call for action against unprecedented environmental challenges grows louder each day.

Pragna Nidumolu, the founder of EcoTeens, a platform dedicated to empowering youth engagement in environmental stewardship, is answering the call.

“My journey as an environmental advocate began with a simple belief—that small actions can lead to significant change,” she said. "In the summer of 2017, I went to India to visit family. While the destinations were spectacular, the surroundings were filled with non-biodegradable trash like plastic, glass and batteries. Everyone I talked to during my visit observed shifting seasons, which are directly linked to warmer global temperatures. I even had an opportunity to interact with fishermen in the area who shared that the fish population has declined significantly in the past decade.

“The very next year, I visited Kenya during my summer vacation. While the natural beauty of Africa was unparalleled, plastic pollution was rampant in the area. The locals shared that across Africa, unmanaged waste and pollution are becoming serious problems, having devastating effects on wildlife and communities,” she continued. “These trips had a profound impact on me. With the goal of helping my local community, I joined the program 'Adopt-a-Highway,' which aims to help keep roadsides clean. Through this program, I realized that it’s not just adults who are responsible and accountable for keeping our planet healthy—it’s on all of us to help.”

A social entrepreneur passionate about sustainability, Pragna founded EcoTeens with a vision to amplify the voices of teens worldwide to have the attention of businesses, lawmakers, governments, and the communities we live in.

“Through EcoTeens, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the power of collective action and the transformative impact it can have on our planet,” she said. "There are more teens in the world than ever before: 1.2 billion, totaling one-sixth of the global population. I decided to embark on a journey to rally teens across the world to call for action to make our communities, businesses, and practices more sustainable.”

Pragna believes that teens today have incredible potential to change things in the world. Generation Z has been shown to be the most future-oriented generation in history. With Pragna at the helm, EcoTeens rallies teens

worldwide to call for action to make communities, businesses, and practices more sustainable.

“In a recent interview with the Earth911 podcast, I had the privilege of sharing my perspectives on how youth can take the lead in addressing the challenges of climate change and assume accountability as the inheritors of the planet,” she explained. “This conversation was an opportunity to amplify the voices of young people and underscore the critical role they play in driving environmental action and shaping the future of our planet.”

Pragna hosts a podcast series called “The Green Stories,” where she brings together impactful

speakers worldwide to engage in meaningful conversations and inspire action. Each episode is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared knowledge in driving environmental change.

“I've had the honor of organizing four Global Youth Sustainability Summits (GYSS), each bringing together over 50 speakers from 35 countries to tackle a diverse range of topics aimed at driving positive change,” she said. “These summits serve as dynamic platforms for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and collective action, uniting changemakers from around the globe in the shared pursuit of a more sustainable future.”

During Women’s History Month, Pragna was published in WomELLE Magazine, where her work was highlighted as an example of the positive effect of grassroots initiatives like EcoTeens in driving positive change. She was also invited to the UN CSW 2024 (Commission on the Status of Women), where she spoke about how young women can engage in sustainability dialogue.

As the owner and leader of the "+The Cap” Campaign for Million Voices, the intersection of sustainability and youth action hits home for Pragna. Among her list of climate change initiatives, +The Cap is among the simplest: keep the bottle cap on before recycling plastic bottles. This seemingly small action can significantly reduce plastic pollution and increase recycling rates. By keeping the cap on, we prevent it from becoming separated from the bottle during the recycling process, making it easier to capture and recycle both components effectively.

As an ambassador for the Sustainable Practices and Solutions Community (SPSC), Pragna is proud to be part of a global movement dedicated to enhancing sustainability by integrating UN principles and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets.

“I am honored to be recognized as one of America's ‘Top 18 under 18’ for my sustainability efforts, a testament to the impact of grassroots initiatives like EcoTeens,” she continued. “Additionally, I had the privilege of being the youngest speaker ever at the Agile Alliance World Conference 2023, where I shared insights on the intersection of Corporate Sustainability through the Gen-Z lens. On every platform and through every opportunity, my message is the same: sustainability starts with youth.”

By empowering educators and nurturing professional learning communities that foster lasting, impactful change, they build lasting capacity in teachers, principals, and school systems to advance equity in education—so everyone can benefit from a love of reading.

Since the beginning of CBCAC in 1998, the organization has been a powerful advocate for the Chinese American community in Greater Chicago. From championing voting rights and civic engagement to spearheading community planning initiatives, CBCAC has been instrumental in shaping the trajectory of Chinatown’s development. Over the years, while their commitment to growth has remained, their focus has evolved to address pressing issues like digital equity, youth empowerment, and small business sustainability.

The pandemic shuttered many beloved local businesses, damaging the community's cultural fabric. However, true to its roots, CBCAC knows that revitalizing a community starts from within. A COMMUNITY SUPERPOWER

incredible results, from securing grants for digital literacy programs for seniors and new immigrants to initiating the Chinatown Vision Plan in partnership with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

One of CBCAC’s most impactful community initiatives is its ongoing efforts to revitalize Chinatown’s commercial landscape. CBCAC has partnered with the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) to launch the Storefront Activation Program: CanalPOP!, an innovative initiative that aims to empower small businesses, combat gentrification,

and preserve Chinatown's cultural uniqueness. Located at 2238 S. Canal Street, CanalPOP! brings the three neighborhoods together in one location. Its balance of subsidized retail space and entrepreneurship support nurtures a new generation of AAPI entrepreneurs, fostering economic diversity and vitality at the same time. The program's vision is to transform the commercial landscape of Chinatown into a district where people can enjoy delicious cuisine and engage with cultural heritage, while enjoying fashionable retail stores. The storefront will feature four fashion shops, two ceramics, and one small-business tea vendor. The initiative is dedicated to uplifting small businesses, and to do so, they will host special markets, festivals celebrating Chinese culture, and seminars for businesses to scale up and grow their business in the right way.

The path to sustainability lies in collective action and collaboration, and CBCAC is well-versed in both of those areas. A significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability came with the designation of Chinatown as a State Cultural District. This recognition

not only celebrates Chinatown’s rich heritage but also opens doors to vital resources and support to preserve local businesses, prevent the displacement of current residents, and strengthen the area’s economic growth.

Leading the Fight Against Avoidable Blindness in Africa

The Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology (KCCO) is on a mission to eliminate avoidable blindness in Africa.

Established in 2001, this unique organization envisions a future where all Africans can access high-quality, patient-centered eye care provided by Africans in well-functioning systems.

KCCO combines clinical ophthalmology with public health principles and applied research to tackle the burden of visual impairment and enhance overall eye health in underserved populations, particularly in rural and low-income areas where they are needed most.

LIVES: SARAH’S STORY

Globally, an estimated 1.4 million children are blind, with many more suffering from visual impairment. The burden is exceptionally high in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where childhood cataract is a significant but treatable cause of blindness. KCCO research has also shown that there is a gender gap, with girls receiving services at a later age than boys and receiving less follow-up than boys. Early identification and treatment are crucial, yet many children in SSA remain undiagnosed for years.

programs focus on detecting and treating cataracts in children as early as possible. Early surgery significantly improves visual outcomes for congenital cataracts. To facilitate early detection, KCCO trains community volunteers and primary care staff as “cataract case finders” who refer suspected cases to specialized pediatric eye care facilities. Outreach screening camps are also conducted at the community level when dedicated funding is available.

Sarah, a young girl from Uganda, is an example of how transformative KCCO's work can be. Diagnosed with congenital bilateral cataracts, Sarah's parents noticed issues with her sight and white spots in her eyes shortly after

birth. They were unaware that Sarah had cataracts.

Thanks to a primary care worker’s referral, Sarah underwent cataract surgery at the age of three at the Benedictine Eye Hospital in Tororo. The surgery restored Sarah’s sight, allowing her to perform everyday tasks and play with her friends without difficulty.

“As a family, we are happy because our girl can now see,” said Sarah’s mother.

With the help of KCCO, Sarah received specialized care and her sight was saved.

However, many children remain undiagnosed due to insufficient resources for training and outreach, demonstrating the need for expanded support. KCCO works

diligently to remove the barriers to cataract treatment.

When donor funding is available, surgeries are performed at no cost to families, and transportation expenses for follow-up visits are covered. Follow-up care is critical, as children often need glasses and further management, especially if operated on at a later age.

Proper treatment and follow-up enable many children to achieve excellent vision and integrate into regular schools by age five. Sarah’s follow-up care, including the provision of glasses, was supported by grants from USAID and the Seva Foundation.

KCCO'S APPROACH

KCCO is a leader in implementing comprehensive childhood blindness activities in Africa. The organization has produced manuals on preventing and managing childhood blindness in developing countries, with more information available at kcco.net. With support from various organizations, KCCO implements strategies to: Identify and refer children who need help early, Support families before and after cataract surgery, Ensure girls receive the same services and opportunities as boys, Strengthen local hospitals.

KCCO currently supports pediatric eye care programs in Burundi, Madagascar, Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda. Due to a lack of funding, many areas remain underserved, and KCCO is working to expand their services further, providing eye care to children in need. With transformative eye care from KCCO, every child has the chance to see a brighter future.

Art is a tool for empowerment—the act of expressing yourself creatively goes beyond labels or experience. At Project Onward, all participants are artists first and foremost.

Since 2004, this unique studio and gallery space has been dedicated to empowering adult artists living with developmental disabilities and men

tal illness. But it's not just about providing a space to create—it's about fostering a community where artists can thrive, challenge stereotypes, and redefine what it means to be an artist.

“The only labels we use are contemporary, abstract, fiber, digital and ceramic artists,” said Nancy Gomez, Executive Director. “It’s only when asking for grants and donations, we’re impelled to say neurodiverse artists because after all, it’s our mission to challenge the narrative that says adults with disabilities and mental illness are different or incapable of living their lives as artists.”

Project Onward is dedicated to providing artists with the very best— from its beautiful studio space to quality art materials, guidance, and access to markets in order to sell their art and earn an income. The artists are provided with the

opportunity to create their work in a safe, supportive studio environment, with access to workspace, materials, and professional guidance without being encumbered by cost. It’s all about the act of creative expression, at no cost to the artist!

But Project Onward is more than just a studio—it's a platform for change. Project Onward strives to inspire change by using art to promote empathy and reduce the stigma of mental illness and developmental disabilities. Through professional exhibitions, public programs, workshops, and portrait slams, the studio and gallery connect artists with the wider arts community and the general public, promoting audience participation and giving artists the opportunity to showcase and sell their work.

The non-profit studio is inclusive and embraces artists with a wide range of life experiences. Some are self-taught artists who have autism, while some are formally trained with bipolar disorder. There are other artists with challenges that are equally complex, however, all of them willingly explore the innermost recesses of their minds to create powerful works of art.

Tasting the Flavors of Guatemala: Chef Mirciny Moliviatis’ Quest to Rediscover Her Roots

Chef Mirciny "Misha" Moliviatis says that food always has a story.

Born and raised in Guatemala, Moliviatis grew up in a food-loving family of restauranteurs, with 28 years of experience running 10 restaurants around the country.

While Moliviatis and her siblings grew up surrounded by food, even working at one of her father's restaurants, her journey to become one of Guatemala’s most famous chefs didn’t start until she began working at elBulli, a restaurant in Spain—a feat in itself, as there were over 5,000 applicants at the time.

Studying under experienced and well-known chefs like Ferran Adria, Moliviatis recalled that the days were grueling—she was one woman among a class of 49 men, and all 50 of them were on a mission to achieve perfection. Still, those days taught her invaluable lessons about hard work, discipline, and, most importantly, that the role of a chef spans far

beyond the kitchen.

During this time, Moliviatis made another discovery: even though she had grown up in Guatemala, she didn’t know much about the country’s cuisine. She shared that even when she returned home to Guatemala after school, she infused her cooking with techniques she had learned in Spain, seeking out flavors and ingredients from around the world. It was only when she realized that the flavors she sought could be found in her local markets that her mission became clear.

Enamored with the abundance of flavors that were available in her country, she understood that just as she was unaware of how much there was to discover about Guatemalan food, others would be as well. Even as she researched, there was little information to be found—and so she took it into her own hands.

“A friend and I started a TV show that was called El Sabor de mi Tierra [The Taste of My Land] and started

traveling around the country,” Moliviatis explained. “We didn’t have a script or a plan; we just traveled. It was so much fun. We sought out the ‘real cooks’ of Guatemala and learned their techniques, how they worked the land, how they used their tools to create food.”

As Moliviatis explored flavors and dishes she’d never tried before, she understood that many of them were from Mayan times— traditional dishes passed down through many generations.

“Food tells you a story. Behind each dish or each ingredient, there is a story of ancestral cuisine that is still alive and latent, culinary techniques that continue to be used after thousands of years since creation,” she shared.

“In Guatemala, we come from an ancient civilization, the Maya, and we have so much history and culture infused into our food. When people think of Latin America, they think of Mexico and South America, but Central America is amazing.

We’re small countries, but we have a lot to share.”

Moliviatis realized that she had the power to amplify the voices of Guatemalan people and was able to share the beauty of Guatemala through food. Through her shows, Puro Chef and Desafío Culinario and her award-winning book, Viviendo la Receta Guatemala Moliviatis achieved this mission, making a name for herself as a talented and creative chef while making the beauty and flavors of Guatemala known.

Moliviatis was appointed the Ambassador of Guatemalan Gastronomic Culture, a role that she has embraced wholeheartedly.

“Food is one of the best expressions of culture that a country has, and the best teachers are the people in the field,” she said.

Dough:

1 Cook the rice. Blend it and set it aside.

2 Dissolve the corn dough in half

liter of water and blend.

3 Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a pot, add the blended dough, and stir constantly. When the mass thickens, add the cooked and blended rice.

Tamales:

1 Cut the maxán leaves by the thickest part, wash well. Banana leaves are cut into 9 inch squares. Wash and cook in water for 10 minutes.

2 The chili peppers are roasted, peeled, split, deveined, and the seeds removed. Cut into strips and set aside.

3 Put a banana leaf square on a maxán, diagonally. Add a portion of dough to the center, add meat, olives, capers, and chili pepper strips. The leaves are folded and closed to form a package and tied with cibaque strips, previously soaked to soften.

4 Put the leftover leaves in a large pot, add 4 cups of water, and bring to a boil. The tamales are placed in the pot on top of the leaves. Cover

For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the unmet need for residential options and programs like those Misericordia offers is overwhelming. Across the State of Illinois alone, tens of thousands are on waiting lists.

And yet, for families with a child who is intellectually or developmentally disabled, the worry of who will be there to care for their loved ones as they grow older is of great concern. With the help of 1,200 employees, Misericordia offers peace of mind to some of these families as it meets their loved one’s needs—and changing needs as they grow older. Its on-campus homes include more

than 20 residential areas, ranging from apartments and intermediate care facilities to the Mother McAuley Skilled Nursing Residence. Misericordia residents also enjoy homes in 15 Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILAs) located in neighboring communities.

On a typical day, its residents wake up with a purpose. They are busy all day long—traversing its campus and the City of Chicago to get to jobs and schools, creating works of art in studio workshops, singing and dancing in performance groups, working out at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, going to on-campus medical and dental appointments, and so much more. Most people take activities like these for granted, but Misericordia’s children and adults depend on others to help them experience their day.

This summer marks another year of commemorating Juneteenth and reflecting on the meaning of freedom. From June 19th to July 4th, we have had the opportunity to participate in a journey that both honors our past and brings us closer to a future where every voice is heard, and every vote counts. For that reason, the journey from Juneteenth to July 4th is particularly symbolic. While July 4th symbolizes the freeing of the land and establishing the founding principles of democracy in the United States, Juneteenth represents the freeing and liberation of the people who live on it. By linking these two dates, we are reminded that the fight for freedom is ongoing and that true independence is achieved when everyone can exercise their rights fully.

Since accomplishing the goal of achieving the recognition of a national holiday, Ms. Opal continues to walk annually to educate the nation on the relevance of Juneteenth and the freedom it represents. “I just want people to know that Juneteenth can be a unifier,” said Ms. Opal. "If people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love."

At 97 years old, Ms. Opal Lee, a distinguished social impact leader, continues to champion Juneteenth, raising awareness and excitement to ensure that it is recognized and celebrated as a national holiday. Known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Ms. Opal has dedicated her life to educating others about the importance of this day, which marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.

Her annual walk, Opal's Walk for Freedom, is a powerful symbol of the journey toward true freedom for all Americans. Through her work with Unity Unlimited, Inc., and with the support of her granddaughter, Dione Sims, Ms. Opal now has programs serving returning citizens, the jobless, and the hungry. She leads her work with a focus on unity and love.

At the same time, Opal's Walk for Freedom has expanded far beyond Fort Worth. This year, Opal's Walk included events in Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, and, for the first time, an international host city, Tokyo, Japan. A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE AMAZON

A natural nomad, Fuchs credits his skepticism both to his grandmother and to a learned wariness from two decades of traveling through mountainous terrain. Fuchs spent 10 years living in Yunnan, China, studying the origins of tea on a mission to become the first Westerner to trek the entire Yunnan–Tibet Ancient Tea Horse Road, an ancient six-thousand-kilometer trade route. On this journey, Fuchs discovered that his best tool was his willingness to adapt to new

What locals have always done well is take time to sit down, have conversations, and build consensus amongst the community—a skill that we perhaps all need some reminding of.”

Designed and built by locals, with locals in mind, Calanoa is a community endeavor that continuously puts the community first. Calanoa also champions sustainability: every part of the lodge comes from the jungle, from the materials used in building the structure to the replanting of the trees and palms used for the future maintenance of the buildings, and even the roofs, woven from palms. Fuchs shared that one of his most memorable experiences was walking through the Calanoa Natural Reserve with Melisiades, the resident medicine man.

The silence of the jungle was only broken by Melisiades' quiet understanding of its surroundings.

Fuchs felt that Melisiades knew all the answers to every question and allowed the jungle and its sensory impacts to introduce themselves without the need for words. While the world is full of beautiful places, the people who care for them, like Melisiades and the Sampers, are often the ones who make them so awe-inspiring.

“Barajas was as eloquent a spokesperson and defender of the wild as one could wish for,” Fuchs said, recalling the almost unrealistically beautiful monkeys that swung from the trees and landed on his shoulders, their movements unpredictable, exciting, and natural.

Barajas explained that the Maikuchiga Sanctuary, founded by conservationist and primatologist Dr. Sara Bennett, was created when the local Mocagua community realized they were negatively impacting the local wildlife.

“The Sanctuary’s purpose has always been to take animals, primarily monkeys, and give them a space where they can get better,” he said. “They can prepare themselves to leave, go back into the forest. They've also realized the message that I try to teach to all my guests: What you're willing to spend money on as a tourist will affect how people will interact with their own environment. Here, the monkeys may not come down tomorrow. They might stay up in the trees, and nobody will force them to come down.”

On our Colombian journey, it was a case of witnessing deeds rather than words, revealing some of the understated people who simply do for others, and to encourage people to revel in the small contributions that one can make, however that manifests.”

Calanoa: Paradise in the Jungle

The Sampers met on a science and research expedition in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park in 1980 and settled in the Colombian Amazon soon after falling in love. They founded the first Calanoa here, a self-sufficient farm where they lived and worked on conservation projects. In 1988, the Colombian drug wars forced the Sampers and their daughters to flee. A decade later, they migrated to Canada, but their love of the country stayed strong. Ten years ago, the family returned to the Amazon with a mission in mind: rebuild Calanoa, better and stronger than ever.

A COMMUNITY PROJECT

Diego designed the eight-cabin lodge, combining traditional techniques with a contemporary approach, and enlisted the help of locals of the Mocagua community to bring their dream to life. A community endeavor, the locals are as much a part of the magic of Calanoa as the art, and as such, the hotel has invested in their home region time and time again. In creating Calanoa, carpentry classes were provided, as none of the locals had the skills needed to build. The staff is local to the region, and their passion for the jungle spreads to visitors, sharing the beauty and magic in every experience.

Every part of the jungle hotel was created with sustainability in mind, from the materials used

in building the structure to the replanting of the trees and palms used for the future maintenance of the buildings, and even the roofs, woven from palms. Rain is harvested, and the energy comes from solar panels. The team made use of local materials and resources, keeping each part of the process as sustainable as possible. Everything is from the jungle, and each aspect is unique. The architecture enhances the experience: ethereal walls and light spaces improve the natural air circulation, allowing visitors to open their senses to the jungle without limits. This is all by design; Calanoa is both a living work of art and a place to educate guests on the importance of conservation.

A space of alternative educational processes, the jungle lodge seeks to contribute to the conservation of the biological and cultural diversity of the Amazon region through art, design, architecture, scientific research, community education, and sustainable tourism.

THE CALANOA FOUNDATION

For more than a decade, Calanoa has contributed to the conservation of the biological and cultural diversity of the Colombian Amazon in the Indigenous territories near the reserve, Tikuna, Cocama, Huitoto, and Yagua.

The Foundation seeks to enrich the local communities, using funding from the hotel to support community projects and participate in the conservation and recovery of ancestral knowledge and cultural practices. Currently, the Foundation is seeking funds for projects like El Yacaré, a boat that travels down the Amazon River at the request of the communities, carrying books, art, and experts on carefully curated subjects for the

Amazonian population. Calanoa is also working with local experts to promote research projects that will create a biodiversity inventory of the Calanoa Reserve’s flora and fauna, creating a record of the medicinal plants found in the gardens and traditional community orchards.

The children’s choir of El Vergel, supported by Calanoa, preserves the dances, songs, and the Tikuna language. The Yacaré project contributes to conserving Indigenous languages and traditions by recording the stories and songs of the elders and generating an archive available to the communities. The Calanoa Foundation also contributes to a scholarship program for Indigenous students and provides encyclopedias and dictionaries for schools—and the students often return to contribute to Calanoa.

ART IN THE AMAZON

Art is integral to Calanoa. As artists and conservationists, the

Sampers believe that creativity is the greatest economic resource possible, and they seek to nurture it through Calanoa’s projects, combining traditional art and culture with sustainable management of forest and river resources. The result is a strengthening of cultural identity, a deeper understanding and appreciation for the land, and stronger economic well-being for the community as a whole.

Calanoa focuses on what they describe as “art for conservation,” meaning that each artistic venture contributes significantly to the community’s economic well-being, strengthening cultural and ethnic identity, and environmental conservation.

The Mural Painting in Mocagua project, in which community members paint the facades of their houses with relevant motives to each family’s Indigenous clans, is a perfect example of this mission.

The Amazon offers endless opportunities for art and learning, but Calanoa takes it one step further. In 2013, in partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Vancouver, Diego and Marlene established the Amazon Field School, offering students the opportunity to seek alternative learning opportunities in a new and exciting environment: the jungle. The Amazon Field School explores topics such as creativity, imagination and aesthetic inquiry, academic research, ecology, conservation and environmental awareness, cultural awareness, community development, and environmental design.

Ardagh, founded in Dublin in 1932 as the Irish Glass Bottle Company, now operates in 26 countries, employs 22,000 people, and produces three million longneck beer bottles daily for AB InBev, the parent company of Budweiser. That means

But Indiana's glassmaking prowess extended beyond utilitarian bottles and cans. Now, when we think of glass-blowing, we think of art—and Kokomo Opalescent Glass, founded in 1888, played a pivotal role in this shift. Indiana’s art glass community was launched in 1888 when Charles Edward Henry, a glass chemist known for glass buttons, novelties, and opalescent glass rods, heard about the gas boom in Central Indiana and took a trip to Kokomo. Within days, Kokomo Opalescent Glass was born, and with it, a new legacy of artistry. The same year Kokomo opened its doors, the first shipment of sheet glass went to Louis Tiffany. It included 600 pounds of blue and white opalescent glass. Kokomo continues to supply renowned artists like Tiffany with exquisite materials for their stained glass creations. Today, the company continues to thrive, preserving its heritage through its original “recipes” while embracing innovation in its Hot Glass Studio.

For over 25 years, Petit and Franz have dedicated their lives to alleviating poverty in the Sacred Valley. Their efforts have created a ripple effect of positive change, providing education, love, and hope to countless children and families.

You might look at the rural houses in the Sacred Valley and think life there must be simple, even idyllic,” said Petit. “However, the harsh reality is that all too often, extreme poverty breeds violence, alcoholism, and abuse. With no sense of hope, the light goes out in children’s eyes… At Sol y Luna, we create positive change by giving two things that all children deserve: love and education.”

In 2009, having spent the past

decade supporting local public schools, the foundation finally opened its own school. The Sol y Luna School began by offering kindergarten and the first few years of primary school. As the hotel expanded, so did the foundation. Today, this intercultural school educates nearly 163 students from kindergarten to 17 years old and offers a comprehensive curriculum, transportation, meals, and psychological support, ensuring that every child receives a holistic education.

In 2017, the first Sol y Luna students graduated, a milestone moment that began a legacy of change. Petit and Franz’s own child, Thomas, graduated from the school two years later. That same year, the foundation launched Roots & Wings, a program supporting graduates from the Sol y Luna School in further education.

Along the way, Petit and Franz found more ways to support the community. In 2015, they opened Paqari, a center for children with disabilities, and three years later, the Sol y Luna Home opened its doors. The orphanage offers a family-like, safe, and loving environment for children who have experienced abuse or abandonment so they can heal and thrive.

Nearly all of the children educated and cared for by the Sol y Luna Foundation come from backgrounds of extreme poverty. Many have experienced violence, suffered neglect or been abandoned. The Sol y Luna Foundation gives them love, support and a sense of hope for a bright future.

The foundation recently completed the renovation of its Marine Innovation Center, a state-of-the-art terrestrial coral nursery. With this renovation, the foundation has expanded its capacity to produce half a dozen species of coral on a large scale, alongside producing ornamental fish and forging partnerships to

conserve critically endangered reef fish.

Earlier this year, international aquarists participated in remodeling and implementing life support equipment for a landbased coral nursery and marine laboratory. These facilities will have the appropriate technology to guarantee coral requirements, facilitate processes, and provide optimal conditions for the massive and ex-situ cultivation of reefbuilding coral species.

The Marine Innovation Center has had two citizen science events as part of the coral restoration program, training 21 volunteers to help transplant fragments in domes. Already, around 300 corals of the Acropora cervicornis species have been successfully transplanted.

These initiatives have bolstered local fishermen to take Recreational Boat Operator courses, learning valuable information about navigation, first aid, water rescue techniques, and the importance of marine ecosystems...

Gorge, and Moccasin Creek State Parks all have a variety of trail and hiking experiences for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels.
