Florida’s Allure Florida has long been a destination for weary eyed travellers since Ponce de León first arrived on the shores of St. Augustine in northeast Florida. Today the Sunshine State attracts an eclectic mix of international visitors, who often frequent the clubs in Miami and the theme parks and adventures of Orlando. While these two leading cities certainly offer constant thrills of all varieties, other up and coming destinations are also becoming more popular. Naples perched on the Gulf Coast has received wide spread praise for its cultured dining scene and acclaimed golf courses, while Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key, a short trip from Orlando and Tampa Bay, offer some of the best white sand beaches worldwide.

sites are miles away from the typical tourist spots, like Amelia Island in northeast Florida and Destin in the northwest. The variety of experiences for a typical holidaymaker rival the elite travel destinations of the world. This comes as no surprise considering Florida help craft the 21st Century tourism product. The more time spent on the water the better is the standard philosophy of most Floridians and visitors alike. There are boat and yacht charters available throughout the state, but generally Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic Coast and Naples on the Gulf Coast are rated the best locations to ‘push off.’ The state enjoys a fishing tourism industry that rivals most islands, the diversity is immense and you can find all kinds of natural wonders depending on the coast. Fish the back waters of the Florida Keys, cast a line for grouper in the Gulf of Mexico, or fight a marlin in the open waters of the Atlantic. The year round sport attracts amateurs and professionals, with plenty of open water and fish for both. Art Basel Miami Beach, the sister event to Switzerland’s annual art extravaganza, hosts 267 leading galleries from all over the world.

In 2014, The Sunshine State hosted over 1.6 million visitors from the UK and an additional 1.6 million Brazilian visitors, by far the top two international travel markets, right behind Canada. British holidaymakers can take full advantage with daily direct flights from London Heathrow & Gatwick Airports to Miami, Orlando and the Tampa Bay area. While Florida’s award winning beaches remain a top holiday attraction, some of the world’s leading theme parks certainly help. Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld are all within a few minutes reach of each other, making Orlando a one stop thrill ride. But don’t stop there, some of Florida’s most impressive

Running from December 3-6, 2015, Art Basel Miami Beach is Florida’s main art event of the year showcasing significant work from the masters of modern and contemporary art, as well as the new generation of emerging stars. Taking full advantage of Miami’s weather and architecture, ambitious large-scale artworks, films and performances also coincide with the event and become part of the city’s outdoor landscape in Miami’s Collins Park and SoundScape Park. The appeal of year round sunshine, a family friendly environment and cultural diversity has helped attract all walks of life to Florida both for an extended holiday and a new beginning. Walking along any of Florida’s highly rated beaches offers an opportunity for a chance encounter with a Hollywood star, South American mogul, or a football friendly couple from Manchester. Whether you are looking to play one of the many championship golf courses, lounge in the cafes of Miami, shop the high-end boutiques of Naples or ride the roller coasters and theme parks of Orlando, the Sunshine State is sure to impress. Your next trip to Florida is only a few clicks away.

Gulf Paradise

C

ome discover your paradise in Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades, better known as Florida’s Paradise Coast. Located in Collier County at the southern end of Florida’s Gulf Coast, this idyllic setting provides visitors and locals alike with a stunning natural scenery comprising of expansive pristine white beaches, serene turquoise water and some of the world’s best sunsets. Yes we all know Miami has the nightlife, Orlando has the theme parks and Tampa has a thriving sports community, but it is Florida’s Paradise Coast that embraces the very best of the Sunshine State. Naples has an evolving international and cultural scene which boasts a ton of activities for all ages. Naples has long been a favourite for visitors with its charming downtown area, high end accommodation, dynamic restaurant scene, boutique shops and storied golf and spa options. Sophisticated in every way, Naples puts all beach towns on notice

to up the cultural ante. Nearby, Marco Island, the largest barrier island within Southwest Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands area offers the island resort lifestyle, perfect for water-sports and relaxation. While the world famous Everglades offer an expansive natural wilderness not seen in most countries. Experience exciting eco-tours, including bird watching and fishing and explore the sprawling Everglades by airboat, kayak, canoe or hiking. From the two Ritz-Carlton resorts to the Inn on Fifth, Naples has high-end accommodation to suit every taste. Choose from an upscale golf and spa oriented location, to downtown with an array of shops and restaurants or beach front to enjoy this beautiful coastal city on the water. Naples downtown area is extremely walkable. Explore Fifth Avenue South, Naples Main Street, with its unique blend of historic and modern architecture and discover the numerous art studios, cafes and the latest trends at elegant boutiques or head over to the Mercato or the

Waterside Shops to peruse world famous designers and luxury labels. The city is also home to many antique and consignment stores with a literal treasure trove of furniture, art, carpets and speciality items, perfect for unique finds. When the sun sets the real fun begins. Dine on a plethora of fresh caught seafood and local farm-to-table produce at one of the many award-winning restaurants. On the Gulf coast grouper and snapper are king; typically the day’s bounty for local fishermen who are not afraid to take some credit for the increase in acclaimed chefs moving to the area. Naples landed on Condé Nast Traveler’s Best American Cities for Foodies list in the magazine’s 2014 Reader’s Choice Awards, and the fast-growing list of chef-driven restaurants continues to add to the steady increase in vacation visits. For the homesick try Grouper & Chips, a gastronomic gem located slightly off-the-beaten path. For an upscale dining experience, head to Osteria Tulia for a meal to rival any restaurant in the city’s European namesake. End the night with libations on Third Street South the heart of Naples social scene. With all the cultural and dining options it’s easy to forget that Naples is a city on the water, neatly positioned on the Gulf of Mexico. The tropical setting and calmness of the water will

remind many of the Caribbean. The main marina in Naples is centrally located making it ideal for a cruise before your dinner reservations. A two-hour cruise starts by coasting through the canals of the upscale Port Royal neighbourhood, a mind blowing enclave of estates directly on the water with multimillion-dollar price tags. Once the boat makes it into the open sea, the dolphins will provide all the entertainment needed. Florida’s Paradise Coast is also the Golf Capital of the world, with an unparalleled 90 pristine golf courses, premier golf programs, golf academies and home of several LPGA and PGA golf tournaments, this is where the pros not only play but many also reside. From the Greg Norman-designed Tiburón Golf Club at the Ritz Carlton Golf Resort to the popular Hibiscus Golf Club, just minutes south of downtown Naples, visitors will definitely be spoilt for choice and hard pressed to find more golf holes per capita anywhere else in the country. The Miami Life Experience the Magic City

M

iami is one of the fastest growing cities in America and has long been known as an eccentric place, with its Art Deco architecture, daring fashions and quirky attractions. The Latin vibe, perfect weather, dynamic restaurant scene and exclusive night clubs are just some of reasons Miami attracts celebs, movie stars and the “it” crowd to its shores. Glamorous South Beach is a favourite, drawing visitors to its world renowned Art Deco District and the candy-coloured hotels on famed Ocean Drive as well as its legendary beaches and night spots. Take a walk down Lincoln Road, a wonderful pedestrian promenade featuring great alfresco dining, funky boutiques, art studios and theatres. For more serious shoppers head to Collins Avenue Fashion District, a dazzling collection of hip designer stores spread between 5th and 9th Streets. At the bottom of Miami Beach, the emerging SoFi (South of Fifth) neighbourhood is more relaxed than the go-go Art Deco District. Here, stroll quiet streets and discover the Jewish Museum of Florida, Miami Beach’s repository of Jewish culture and history in Florida and stop by South Pointe Park, a great locals beach where kites fly and surfers ride the waves. Art and design are on the menu in two Miami neighbourhoods just north of the well-travelled downtown, home to the popular Bayside Marketplace, American Airlines Arena and Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center. Vanguard collectors head to the Wynwood Arts District, boasting a tropical SoHo vibe and more than 100 galleries. This emerging neighbourhood is home to the amazing Wynwood Walls. The open-air park dedicated to cutting-edge museum quality contemporary urban murals forms part of Miami’s new Midtown area, which features trendy boutiques, cafes and lounges. One of the most interesting spots to visit is the Rubell Family Collection, one of America’s most important and edgy collections of contemporary art. The innovative spirit carries over into the adjacent Design District, a compelling 18 blocks of interior design showrooms, home furnishings and furniture studios that are open to the public while hip restaurants and art galleries have sprung up on every block.

8

Take a step back in time when you visit Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest community. Deep in the heart of bustling Coconut Grove,

the Barnacle Historic State Park houses the oldest home in its original location in Miami, designed and built by Commodore Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Miami’s early pioneers. Overlooking Biscayne Bay, one can imagine life in South Florida’s bygone days, before any roads had been built. Nearby, Coral Gables one of America’s richest neighbourhoods and a separate city within Greater Miami will be sure to dazzle. Aptly named the City Beautiful, its elegant homes line winding avenues shaded by banyans and live oaks; backing up to hidden canals, many with their own jetties. A must see is the Venetian Pool. The 820,000 gallon (3.1 million litres) swimming pool built in 1923 from a coral rock quarry is considered one of the world’s most unique and breathtaking municipal swimming pools. The pool is spring-fed and the beautiful coral rock keeps the water cool even in the summer sun. Two waterfalls and cave-like grottos make the experience even better. For a Cuban twist, check out Little Havana. Have a game of dominoes, purchase hand rolled Cuban cigars, sip on an authentic tasting mojito and take in all the cool colourful art. Time it right and you can attend Viernes Culturales (Cultural Fridays) a monthly event taking place on the last friday of each month which turns Calle Ocho (Eighth Street) into an outdoor art gallery and festival. For a more defined luxury experience head to Aventura, a tropical residential enclave 12 miles north of Miami and 12 miles south of Fort Lauderdale. Water surrounds sleek high-rises and luxurious single-family homes. Check in at the Turnberry Isle Miami and experience the ultimate luxury resort with a full spa and salon and two championship golf courses with easy access to a five star marina. Shoppers will be delighted with the range and options at nearby Aventura Mall, the largest mall in the area boasting six department store anchors and more than 300 shops. A visit to the quiet and beautiful waterfront community of Aventura wouldn’t be complete without the opportunity to get out on the open water and truly relax in style. Enjoy the sunset on the water or charter a sailboat, yacht, fishing boat or kayak for a full day of fun in the sun. No matter your needs there’s a boat docked in one of Aventura’s marinas waiting for you to take her for a spin. Whether it is for a small or large group, for a few hours or a few days, boat trips can be easily booked to take you around Biscayne Bay or all the way to the Bahamas.

Classic Elegance

Worth Avenue, Palm Beach Image provided courtesy of Discover The Palm Beaches

The ultimate playground for the rich and famous, The Palm Beaches may just have room for you too!

F

lorida has many manicured estates, golf course communities, and newly planned cities springing up everywhere imaginable but it is oil, real estate and railroad tycoon Henry Morrison Flagler who is regarded as the ultimate connoisseur of private luxury. Flagler established The Breakers in 1896 on the island of Palm Beach, America’s first resort destination. The funny thing is it’s not the bridge one must take over to the exclusive island of Palm Beach, or the air of excellence, it really is simply put, a matter of care. By far, the town of Palm Beach, located in Palm Beach County, South Florida, is the neatest, cleanest, and downright fanciest island Florida has to offer. This is not Key West, a Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops are not going to cut-it here. The quality of everything is quite delightful, from the luxurious accommodations, fine dining, high-end shopping, exclusive golf courses to the upscale spas, providing visitors with a truly quintessential experience of old world Floridian charm combined with modern amenities. Palm Beach and the surrounding towns of Palm Beach County (better known as The Palm Beaches), stretches from Boca Raton in the south to Jupiter and Tequesta in the north. The area provides visitors with a plethora of events to attend including the sport of kings, Polo. The International Polo Club Palm Beach opens their international season in January with multiple competitions, highlighted by the US Polo Open. Every Sunday the competition is firstrate with many of the finest polo players on the planet competing to show off their riding skills in high and medium goal matches. Enjoy a Sunday champagne brunch while watching play divided into challenge cups, qualifier matches, and full tournaments.

16

For the more active sports enthusiast try the multitude of champi-

onship golf courses, tennis clubs, or a quick sail down the coast. The Atlantic Ocean hems the eastern half of the county with beach stretching 47 miles from north to south, so whether it’s making a birdie on a par-4 hole overlooking the Atlantic Ocean or playing for the first time on a public golf course along the breezes of the Intracoastal Waterway and Lake Worth Lagoon, options are abound. Enjoy the water view no matter where you tee off with many of the benefits of a private course provided at the price of a public course. With all the elegance and comfort of a private resort, these semiprivate golf courses present intimate surroundings with their lavish clubhouses and outstanding amenities. Worth Avenue in Palm Beach is an enchanting destination with European sophistication and inimitable style and grace, this architectural paradise is one of the most beautiful shopping venues in America. Reminiscent of the magical towns of the Amalfi Coast the winding cobbled streets and hidden courtyards of Worth Avenue will delight the senses if not the pocketbook. Rest assured this is an essential Palm Beach outing even if just for lunch and a stroll. As Florida’s Cultural Capital,The Palm Beaches blends historic entertainment districts and a sophisticated arts scene with fabulous beaches, shopping and dining offering a variety of activities for all types of visitors. Enjoy a night at the Ballet Palm Beach, at the Eissey Campus Theatre. Since its first season, the company has grown to become a fixture in the arts and culture community, presenting multiple full length productions each year. Alternatively immerse yourself in Palm Beach history and visit the Flagler Museum, orininally known as Whitehall, Henry Flagler’s Gilded Age estate. The historic landmark is open to the public featuring guided tours, changing exhibits, and special programs.

Old World Charm in Palm Beach Palm Beach offers visitors an array of upscale accommodation options seamlessly blending old word charm with modern luxury and amenities. Here are some of our favourite picks. THE BRAZILIAN COURT HOTEL The Brazilian Court Hotel draws the upper crust of society to the island of Palm Beach, as it has since opening on New Year’s Day 1926. Celebrities like Greta Garbo and Gary Cooper came frequently for the hotel’s signature privacy and pampering, and today’s vacationers, executive retreats, and incentive groups continue to enjoy the star treatment.

beach bungalows for daytime rental and a variety of watersports. Furthermore the resort boasts 36 holes of championship golf; 10 Har-Tru tennis courts; a luxury spa; and an interactive Family Entertainment Center. The legendary property features eight distinctive restaurants and eight bars, with settings ranging from casual beach-front to stylishly sophisticated, including HMF, one of the most exciting destinations for social drinking and eating; as well as an array of on-site boutiques. THE CHESTERFIELD PALM BEACH

A star in its own right, this Palm Beach landmark retains its old world glamour and in-town convenience mere steps from the latest in designer shopping on Worth Avenue and the timeless pleasures of the beach. A $45 million renovation over six years revitalised the hotel’s Mediterranean elegance, reconfigured the accommodations to 70 studios and one-to-three bedroom suites, added sumptuous limestone and mahogany baths, and discreetly introduced twenty-first-century technology. Other highlights include the epicurean menus of celebrity Chef Daniel Boulud at Café Boulud and the poolside salon of celebrity stylist Frédéric Fekkai.

The Chesterfield Palm Beach, a Four Diamond boutique and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is located on Palm Beach just steps from the Atlantic Ocean and Worth Avenue. Surrounded by palm-lined boulevards and elegant villas, the hotel is an architectural gem and local institution that epitomises the relaxed Palm Beach lifestyle. The boutique hotel offers 53 comfortably appointed rooms and suites that are individually decorated in lush fabrics and vivid colours, highlighting the warm days and breezy summer nights, boasting the perfect combination of style and comfort. Elegant and chic, cool yet welcoming, the hotel is an oasis of old-world charm where the genteel English values of discreet hospitality and attentive service go hand in hand.

THE BREAKERS

THE COLONY PALM BEACH

One of America’s most iconic resort destinations, The Breakers was the first hotel resort built on Florida’s southeast coast by Henry Flagler. The 540-room, Italian Renaissance-style hotel resides on 140 acres of lushly landscaped oceanfront property in the heart of Palm Beach. Renowned for its gracious service, this modern classic paradise indulges its clientele, whether couples on a romantic getaway, multi-generational travellers on a family vacation or large gatherings in celebration. Its timeless atmosphere, from its magnificent interiors to its artfully designed landscape has been renewed in a style of relaxed elegance.

Since 1947, The Colony has been at the centre of Palm Beach social life hosting U.S. Presidents and European Royalty as well as discerning travellers from around the world. Its location is ideal in the centre of the town and steps from Palm Beach’s best beach. Blessed with classic British Colonial architecture, The Colony has undergone a total make-over recently by internationally renowned designer Carelton Varney. The decorator drenched the hotel’s interiors with bold colours and rich fabrics and prints whilst retaining its classic charm. All of the 90 guest rooms, suites, villas and penthouses are beautifully appointed. Three spectacular Penthouses top the main hotel and an adjacent mansion, Casa Manana, has been beautifully reconfigured into seven spacious villas. A true “boutique” hotel, small in size with a distinct personality, The Colony exudes charm and a truly friendly feeling.

The Breakers features a breathtaking oceanfront with half a mile of private beach, a Mediterranean-style beach club reminiscent of St. Tropez, four oceanfront pools, five whirlpool spas, luxury

A

popular idiom says that the best things are found in the journey, not the destination. Lucky for its visitors, Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida has both covered.

22

The Tribe’s success as a sovereign nation and unbending stewardship of a unique ecosystem (the only one of its kind), the Florida Everglades, has led to several successful enterprises that have become celebrated cultural and entertainment hot-spots in the heart of South Florida - where travellers can find adventure, the unexpected, and the unexplored.

always at the centre of the cooking chickee, where Miccosukee women prepared traditional meals. Native artisans also craft beadwork, carve woodwork, and weave intricate patchwork right in front of visitors’ eyes.

Miccosukee Indian Village & Airboat Rides

Visitors to Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida can journey into the heart of the Everglades to find their adventurer’s spirit, and then head indoors to continue their exciting voyage at the impressive Miccosukee Resort & Gaming with seemingly endless opportunities for world-class gaming. Touted as the home of the highest payouts and the most promising possibilities, the facility offers over 1,500 Gaming Machines, High Stakes Poker and Bingo, and cash giveaways – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The entertainment continues with the diverse live events hosted at the world-class venues under the same roof.    For those seeking absolute relaxation and pampering, the Resort offers 302 luxurious guest rooms and is equipped with state of the art recreation facilities, including a temperature-controlled pool and a full service salon and spa. If visitors are travelling with little ones, kids’ play areas, a recreation arcade, and child-care services can provide the much needed relief and peace of mind parents crave.    The Resort is also where some of the best Miami dining is housed. You don’t have to know how to pronounce the exotic sounding names of the restaurants – like Empeek Cheke, the Resort’s fine dining restaurant that features haute cuisine from an award-winning chef, or Empeeke Aaweeke, a buffet of international flavours with an Everglades view – to appreciate native favourites including wild boar, American Bison, and even alligator.

When American journalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas coined the Florida Everglades the “River of Grass”, she hadn’t been aboard a Miccosukee airboat ride. If she had, she would have seen her imaginative metaphor in the literal sense.    Visitors to Miccosukee Indian Village & Airboat Rides can glide swiftly through vast, pristine Florida Everglades and lose sight of where water ends and grass begins as each blends seamlessly with the other, painting a breathtaking landscape that stretches for miles. Along their air-propelled journey, visitors can see and be seen by the native wildlife from above and below including great blue herons, ospreys, kestrels, American alligators, and many others – and speeding past cypress islands, sloughs, and schools of fish, they’ll visit an ancient Indian camp that’s been owned by the same Miccosukee family for over 100 years.    Here’s a taste of trivia that thrills: did you know that an adult alligator can have up to 80 teeth? During a world-famous Alligator Demonstration at Miccosukee Indian Village & Airboat Rides, you can get close enough to count. The instruction is simple; sit at the edge of your seat and take out your electronic devices to capture incredible moments that are certainly worth posting. The encounter usually goes something like this: An experienced demonstrator manoeuvres himself atop a massive alligator (American alligators can grow up to 15 feet long) and somehow immobilizes the Goliath. It looks like a precarious position to be in; the audience holds their breaths. Now he releases his grip – and to everyone’s surprise – the gator stays still. Then, the demonstrator puts his hand inside the gator’s gaping mouth. Another breath hold. Suddenly, the alligator forcefully jerks his stout body – over a half ton of pure muscle – and snaps his powerful jaws shut. Faster than the eye can discern, the demonstrator’s hand is back by his hips. He’s unscathed. The audience can breathe again.    It may come as a surprise to know that as dangerous as they may seem, the live-capture techniques demonstrated in the shows have been a very practical – and routine – part of daily life for Miccosukee living in the untamed Everglades for centuries.    Not only can brave feats be experienced daily, but also the Miccosukee Museum offers a rare opportunity to be transported back in time and experience ancient Miccosukee customs in modern day. Visitors can tour the chickee pavilion and let a guide illustrate essential aspects of daily life, like the smouldering fire
