2012 Duty Free Show of the Americas

BY

strong year”

RYAN WHITE

“A

t’s that time again when travel retail buyers, suppliers, distributors and service providers from across the Americas meet in sunny Orlando for the annual International Association of Airport Duty Free Stores (IAADFS) Duty Free Show of the Americas. The largest of its kind in the region and a great place to network in professional and social settings, the show offers a convenient means to get a large amount of business done in just a few short days. Michael Payne, Executive Director of IAADFS, told us at press time that 150 companies will be exhibiting this year. The following chart provides a breakdown of booths by category:

I

Category

Number of booths

Liquor 47 Fragrances and Cosmetics 35 Jewelry, Accessories and Luggage 32 Confectionery and Food 15 Tobacco 10 Gifts and Writing Instruments 9 Services 2 Total 150

“We’re about at the same level that we were at this time last year, perhaps a hundred or so above,” Payne told us. “However, these numbers aren’t really indicative of any final figures at the moment. The registration process tends to get much more aggressive from this point on and then of course you have to wait and see what the on-site numbers turn out to be. We’ll have a strong year.” When we spoke to Payne the exhibition space was completely sold out and at press time IAADFS was trying to determine if there was any other way to accommodate a few more exhibitors. The net total

exhibition space at this year’s show equals about 74,000 square feet. There have been a number of changes to this year’s show in terms of content. IAADFS is now offering a single registration option that includes all social events; upscaled entertainment at the Gala Evening with Willy Chirino; live entertainment in Club Americas; the addition of soccer and Zumba to sports day; the elimination of the Sunday afternoon picnic; and an upgraded Opening Reception. Furthermore, last year IAADFS had an educational session on Sunday afternoon that was targeted toward WHO issues. This year the organization has put together another Sunday afternoon seminar that will be open to everyone and that Payne assures will be very entertaining. Tim Gard from Comic Visions will discuss travel issues and experiences in a humorous manner. “It’s a casual event on Sunday afternoon but with some real networking and content-driven value,” Payne adds. In terms of sponsors at press time, Payne confirmed that Brown-Forman, Pernod Ricard, Philip Morris, Advanced Wireless, Bacardi, Cross, Hershey’s and Botran Rums would be sponsoring events this year, with more companies likely to come onboard. “These sponsorships represent a major contribution to the show and IAADFS is very appreciative of their generosity,” Payne told us. And in terms of the attitude of members this year, Payne told us that some key indicators for the industry have travel retail executives in high spirits: “The mood seems very positive about the show and 2012 in general. Travel numbers are up, which is obviously a good tracker for us. You can still

“I haven’t seen final numbers for 2011 yet in a formal way, but the sense you get from talking to people is that business has been strong and they can see improvements over 2010.” Michael Payne, Executive Director, IAADFS

find regional differences obviously, but people seem very upbeat and looking forward to doing business at the show this year.” Of course, a good sense of the attitude in the region can be gleaned from how quickly exhibition space is sold. Considering booth space at the 2012 IAADFS exhibition was snapped up very quickly this year, it’s clear that people are ready to get down to business. Many have updated booths, and in terms of social activities Payne tells us that members are eager to find alternative networking opportunities in addition to meeting on the tradeshow floor. “Spend is up, travel is up and in some cases more importantly the spend per product is up, meaning that travelers in many cases are going back to buying higherpriced items in the stores,” Payne concluded. Given the positive indicators coming from out on the concourse and the changes that the IAADFS has implemented, it would appear that the Duty Free Show of the Americas is once again set to dazzle attenc dees from across the region in 2012.
