IAADFS Overview
ith IAADFS numbers looking very solid at publication time, 2013 is shaping up to be a memorable year for the organization. Americas Duty Free sat down with Michael Payne, Executive Director of IAADFS, to get his thoughts on why 2012 is set to be a banner year.
W
Americas Duty Free: Can you give us an update with regard to attendance at this year’s show? Michael Payne: As compared to the same period last year we are running well ahead of the 2012 pre-registration numbers but it’s way too early to know what final numbers will be as we have a large on-site registration. Nonetheless, we are encouraged and I think we will have a strong turnout. Our pre-registration for buyers has been very good. ADF: Can you give us a breakdown of booths by category? MP: Sure, we have 190 exhibitors, consisting of Liquor (50), Jewelry, Accessories/Cosmetics (46), Gifts/Writing Instruments (16), Confectionaries/Gourmet Foods (19), Tobacco (11) and Services (4). ADF: What is the mindset of members this year? MP: I do believe people are feeling more positive and upbeat compared to the previous year, but still cautious. There is plenty of good news out there such as Miami airport having a million more passengers in 2012 than in the previous year. That is good growth by any definition. In fact, we did a very quick survey question recently. Over 60% of the respondents felt 2013 would be better than last year and only 20% felt the business would decline. ADF: In terms of sales and passenger traffic in the Americas, in your opinion how did duty free fare in 2012 as compared to 2011? MP: The Americas showed positive growth in 2012 compared to 2011. Some regions/areas were stronger than others but overall the trend was upward. Data shows increased air traffic, which should lead to more sales.
ADF: Are there currently any airport- or duty free-related projects in the Americas that you’re particularly excited about? Please explain. MP: There are too many to mention and I’m certain to forget someone, but we all should be excited about the upgrades and expansion of stores throughout the Americas. Improved designs, brighter stores, enhanced product offerings and better service are apparent. This is a case where that old expression “a rising tide raises all boats” fits. This enhancement of duty free projects across the Americas will impact everyone in the region in a positive way. ADF: Are there any changes being made to this year’s show as compared to last year? MP: The format is generally the same. We have expanded the exhibits area but still cannot accommodate everyone who has requested space and/or expanded booth size. I believe everyone will find the social/networking events upgraded, and The Gala Dinner and Club Americas should be a big hit with attendees. We have some new exhibit offerings and are continually working on upgrading food choices with the hotel. ADF: What sponsors have confirmed so far for this year’s show? MP: So far we are proud to have sponsors that include Pernod Ricard, Philip Morris, Hershey’s, Godiva, Advanced Wireless, Caldris/28 Black, T-Tech by Tumi, Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, Brown-Forman and Perfetti Van Melle. These sponsorships are really important for us and we try to recognize and honor their support during the meeting as much as possible. ADF: What is your favorite duty free-related memory or experience from 2012? MP: For me, probably both the resiliency and generosity of this industry. Despite threats, the industry continues to grow, prosper and adapt. Also, I don’t know many industry sectors that have the commitment and drive of ours to support and sponsor so many charitable causes across the globe. It’s a real testimony to the type of people that make up our industry. c
“The Americas showed positive growth in 2012 compared to 2011. Some areas were stronger than others but overall the trend was upward. Data shows increased air traffic, which should lead to more sales.” Michael Payne, Executive Director, IAADFS

beauty2market says the time is right to take the VitaMan range into travel retail
ALFA Brands
with all-natural men’s skincare line
Rocky Patel Premium Cigars, Bonita Springs, Florida, has announced the appointment of ALFA Brands, Inc., Lexington, NC, as their travel retail agent. ALFA Brands will be responsible for coordinating the sales and marketing efforts of Rocky Patel brands to the travel retail industry. Indeed, ALFA Brands’ executives have been in the travel retail business since 1985 and they represent several other companies in numerous product categories. ALFA Brands will utilize its existing customer base to build Rocky Patel‘s cigars sales in key travel retail locations, as well as develop new markets and distribution on the strength of its firstclass cigars and accessories products. Rocky Patel, President and CEO of Rocky Patel Premium Cigars, comments: “This newly formed strategic partnership with ALFA Brands will help us expand the distribution of our products in the duty free/travel retail stores and in order to gain additional trademark recognition, we’ll develop an exclusive packaging and product selection for this market segment.”
Australian Lifestyle brand VitaMan is set to take on the global skincare brand leaders in travel retail with its all-natural range for men. A fast-growing sector of the skincare segment, offerings for men are currently dominated by a handful of brands – but VitaMan believes its completely natural ingredients, using plant and botanical extracts found only in the Australian Outback, give it a unique selling advantage. With products available in over 35 global markets, VitaMan will now focus on travel retail. Following a successful launch at the recent Airline Retail Conference in Hong Kong, VitaMan is making its Americas debut at the Duty Free Show of the Americas (booth 2204) through its exclusive global travel retail sales agent and distribution partner beauty2market. “Skincare for men – while still small compared to the women’s sector – is growing fast globally, as is demand for natural products,” says VitaMan owner Clare Matthews. “Since its launch in 1999, VitaMan has established itself as a truly innovative and progressive niche brand and, while we are have no plans to enter the mass market sector, we see real potential for the brand in the under-exploited travel retail sector, where an ever increasing number of travellers — men and women — are becoming more discerning and discriminating about the products they buy.” VitaMan offers a comprehensive all-natural product range for men, including shave, face, body, hair, age control, sports and travel items. Top sellers are in its Shave and Face Range, Hair Shampoos and Treatments, and its Anti-Aging Wrinkle Smoother Serum and Eye/Lip Reviver Gel. The brand also has a dozen items in 50ml sizing, perfect for the travel retail sector. Understanding the particular demands of the travel retail sector, exclusive packaging has been developed for the channel for display and launch in Orlando. All 50ml individual items are priced under US$30; and the selection of products available for the gift packs allows clients to mix and match an assortment according to a retail partner’s needs. “We believe this channel of distribution will add awareness of the brand, attract new consumers with travel-geared product ranges and sizes, and drive brand loyalty with existing domestic market customers,” adds Matthews. beauty2market Principal David Tillman is confident that the time is right to take the VitaMan range into travel retail. “The brand has built a solid reputation globally with its fabulous products and increasing product awareness through its global contract with the Hilton Spa group which, with Hilton’s own continued expansion — particularly into Asia and notably China — have a clear synergy with travel retail.”

The Dalmore launches travel retail exclusive Valour The Dalmore distillery has launched a new expression, The Dalmore Valour, for sale exclusively in travel retail. The spirit is named after the Clan Mackenzie’s act of bravery in 1263 when an ancestor of the Mackenzie Clan bravely saved King Alexander III from a charging stag. The grateful King granted the Mackenzies with a Royal 12-pointer stag in their coat of arms. The Dalmore distillery was long owned by The Mackenzie family and every bottle of The Dalmore single malt whisky is adorned with this proud emblem, symbolizing the distillery’s royal pedigree. A unique blend of three different cask finishes, The Dalmore Valour is matured initially in first fill ex-Bourbon casks from Boston and Clermont, USA and 30 year old Matusalem oloroso sherry butts from Gonzales Byass, Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. The spirit is then finessed in Port Pipes from Duoro Region, Portugal to create a truly unique Dalmore expression. Launching with a high profile promotional display in Qatar Duty Free in March 2013, The Dalmore Valour will be rolled out through travel retail outlets over the course of 2013, priced at £50, €55 or US$72. "The Dalmore brand has had a stellar year in travel retail and we are proud to say that it is now the fastest growing malt in the channel,” says Travel Retail Director Francesco Scaglione. “This year, we will build on that momentum and continue to work closely with our partners to create innovative products and displays— the first of which is our new Dalmore Valour exclusive.”
