Summer Fun & Safety for 2013 Stay Cool. Stay Safe.

Welcome to summer - no school, open windows, more time outside, summer vacation, and simply soaking up the sun with our family. Keeping active throughout the summer is important for both people and pets, but there are safety measures that we all need to take to ensure that our companion pets can enjoy the nice weather while staying healthy and happy during the season.

Water, water, water, everywhere: Dogs and cats don’t have as many sweat glands as we do, nor can they cool off like we can. Dogs pant and cats can too. The water lost by panting needs to be replaced, so keep fresh cool water available for your pet at all times.

Water Safety: iStockPhoto.com

Mind the sun and heat:

Most dogs enjoy swimming, but some cannot swim while others may hate the water. Be conscious of your dog's preferences and skills before trying to make him swim. If you're swimming for the first time with your dog, start in shallow water and coax him in by calling his name. When boating, put a lifejacket on your pets as a safety measure in case they fall overboard.

Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early morning or evening when the sun's heat is less intense. When you go for a walk or are heading to the park or the beach, find shady areas to rest. The sunshine can overheat dogs, burn their skin, or just make them extremely uncomfortable. Just as we need to sit under an umbrella or awning to cool down, our pets do too. Take bottles of cold water for your dog and encourage her to drink often. Remember that your dog may become overheated long before you do. Signs of heatstroke may include hot skin, rapid panting, twitching muscles, salivation, and a dazed expression. Note that short-nosed dogs such as bulldogs and pugs do not pant as efficiently as long-nosed dogs, and therefore have to work harder to cool themselves. If your dog appears to be overly hot, wrap your pet in a towel with cool, NOT cold water. Cool him down by giving him ice cubes to lick (as cold water will upset his stomach worse and hasten dehydration). Let him lie in front of a fan. Go immediately to a local emergency vet if your pet’s condition worsens.

Grooming:

Give your dog a good, thorough brushing and a bath regularly, particularly since they’re outside more, rolling around in the sand and grass, and playing in the water. This will help keep her clean, cool, and comfortable.

Never leave your pet in the car:

On sunny, warm days never leave your dog in the car - ever. The air in a parked car doesn’t circulate and the temperature can rise within minutes to a point where it can become life threatening. Even if the windows are cracked open and you park in the shade, cars heat up like ovens and can be unbearable. Please leave your pets at home if you can’t take them to places where they can accompany you.

Your Global Pet Foods’ Healthy Pet Care Specialists can help ensure that both you and your pets are ready for the Summer Season. May you and your pets have a safe and healthy summer. Cheers!

Dog Park Etiquette

t

o.

i St

ho kP oc

For most dog owners, going to the dog park is a fun way to let your dog get exercise while socializing with other dogs (and lets you socialize with people while keeping an eye on your dogs). We all need to be mindful of proper dog park etiquette when we visit in order to keep the park safe and fun for everyone. Once you and your dog get to the dog park, it may be tempting to just stand back and watch all the activity while your dog runs around. Everyone will have a much more rewarding time if you observe some basic “dog park” etiquette. And while many of the suggestions below are more common sense than anything, it’s often observed that they’re not heeded regularly.

Don’t

Keep your dog on-leash until you get to the off-leash area. This is not just respectful to other park users, it’s much safer for your dog.

Take your dog if she is sensitive to other dogs, where the park is enclosed, and if there are more than approx. 2 dogs per every 180 sq. ft. of space.

Close all doors to the dog park after entering or exiting.

Bring or use treats and toys when other dogs are nearby. Allow dogs to form loose packs.

Observe the dogs in the dog park to see if there are any potential health or behavior problems before entering. Clean up after your dog.

Allow a dog to bully another.

Supervise dogs when they are playing and interrupt any rough play.

Ever let your dog off-leash in an unfenced dog park if he/she is not responsive to your verbal commands.

Be willing to leave the dog park if you feel that your dog is being a bully or being bullied, the play is getting too rough, or your dog is just not having fun.

Worry if some dogs don’t play with other dogs in a dog park.

Check to be sure there aren’t a large number of male dogs who are unneutered at the park.

Bring your dog if he/she has not be spayed or neutered yet. If your male dog is not neutered, he may constantly try and mount other dogs.

Be cautious about taking advice from other park patrons who are not dog professionals.

Spend your time talking on a cell phone. It’s important that you supervise your dog at all times and be able to give your dog your full attention. Don’t scold or touch someone else’s dog. You wouldn’t want them to do that to your dog.

8

Do

Bring a dog that is under 4 months of age. They won’t have had all the necessary inoculations that allow them to play safely with other animals.

Volume 4 ISSUE NO 3

Be friendly with other dog owners. It’s more enjoyable if everyone is nice to each other. Always observe all of the rules posted at your local dog park. Each town has its own set of by-laws. And finally, have fun!!

COACH Baby Steps

Making sure that your pup’s first experiences with his training are motivational, fun and fair, will be the key to building that special relationship that we all aspire to. Getting him prepared to realize that his crate is a place of comfort and safety is important. Make sure that the crate is placed in an area free of drafts and heat ducts, but still in a social area of the home. A comfy blanket and a few toys will help him to settle in. Start with just a few minutes of quiet time in the crate and then let him out. Do this many times while you are home, first for the practice and second to show him that going into the crate is not always an indicator that you are leaving. Initially, keep the door open and start to toss in a treat when he goes in by himself. Keep a special toy on hand, which he only gets during crate time. Eventually, progress to keeping the door closed, and extending the time he is in his crate. Young-

10

Volume 4 ISSUE NO 3

sters should be crated for just a few hours at a time, with a bathroom break as needed. If he kicks up a fuss when the door closes, wait for a few moments until he is quiet before opening the door again. This will help to teach him the door only opens during appropriate behavior. Getting puppy out for a walk is a great way for you to enjoy your pup, to provide proper social outlets, and to ensure that you are teaching him proper leash etiquette. First, get him used to wearing his collar and leash indoors. Pick one that is lightweight and appropriate for his size and age. Once he is old enough and has the go ahead from your Veterinarian, you can venture outside. Pick a side for your pup to walk on, rather than zig zag in front of you. Traditionally this means being on your left. This will be the reinforcement zone. Whenever your pup is not pulling or lagging and is on your left side, reward him. This can be with his favorite treat and verbal praise. Encourage him to

stay in this zone. Reward versus no reward is the big key to raising a well-balanced puppy. As soon as he starts to understand where he needs to be to receive his reward, he will be only too willing to stay beside you on your walk. As you progress, you can start to increase the time between rewards. Avoid having to continuously pull him back to you, and instead concentrate on what he is doing right. By doing this, your puppy will never have the opportunity to practice pulling, and you will have a safe and happy walk.

Pet Obesity:

A National Epidemic Pet obesity has become a national epidemic in North America and is one of the most common disorders affecting companion pets. Over 50% of dogs and cats are either overweight or obese. Approximately 24-40% of pets are classified as overweight while obesity is defined as an increase of over 20% above the optimum body weight. Why is pet obesity on the rise? The key reasons are that more often, pets are leading a more confined and sedentary lifestyle with little or no significant exercise, availability of highly-palatable, energy-dense pet foods and treats, and a strong human-animal bond that leads to overfeeding and snacking. Why should you be concerned as to whether your pet is overweight or obese? If your dog or cat is overweight or obese, they face an increased risk of serious illnesses such as: Cancer Diabetes Arthritis/Joint Pain Liver Disease

Respiratory Problems Pancreatitis Hypertension Heart Disease

Further, allowing your dog to be overweight can decrease your pet's lifespan. Obesity has been proven to reduce the lifespan of dogs by almost two years. To find a Global Pet Foods store near you, visit our website at www.globalpetfoods.com/store-locations

Obesity should be dealt with as a medical problem and taken care of immediately when recognized, as the condition is easier to control in its early stage. The first step in identifying whether your pet has a weight issue is to check their Body Condition Score. On page 17, you’ll see a chart that will help you determine what your pet’s score is. It is also recommended that you weigh your pet. Once you start a program to help your pet reach their ideal weight through exercise and managing their food intake, both the Body Condition Score and ongoing weight tracking can be used in conjunction to track the healthy changes in your pet. As Canada’s Healthy Choice for Pets, Global Pet Foods stores across Canada are committed to helping you and your pet follow a healthy lifestyle.

If you know that your pet is not at his or her ideal weight, join our Healthy Pet Challenge! Visit www.globalpetfoods.com for details. Win 1 of 5 prizes of FREE Natural Balance® pet food for a year or 1 of 50 Global Pet Foods gift cards valued at $150.

Do You Know Your Pet’s

Body Condition Score? The Body Condition Score is a system for determining your pet’s weight. Since dogs and cats can vary so much in size, even within a breed, utilizing the Body Condition Scoring system focuses more on shape than weight. Simply weighing your pet doesn’t necessarily let you know if your pet is underweight or overweight. This is why Global Pet Foods recommends using the Body Condition Score System in conjunction with weighing your pet. Once your pet reaches their ideal weight utilizing the Body Condition Score System, monthly monitoring of their weight helps to ensure that your pet’s ideal body condition is being maintained. The Body Condition system ranges from underweight to ideal to overweight, and is based on a visual and hands-on examination of your pet. The first step in deciding whether your dog is overweight is to know what his ideal body weight looks like. Compare your dog’s figure to the chart on the following page to find out whether your dog is overweight, underweight or at the ideal weight. Need more help? Visit your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store and speak to the Healthy Pet Care Specialists.

What’s Your Pet’s Score? 1. Very Thin

Ribs, spine and bony protrusions are easily seen from a distance. You won’t feel fat or muscle when you touch the ribs. The pet looks bony, emaciated and starved.

2. Underweight

Ribs, spine and bony protrusions are easily felt with little fat or muscle. The pet has a small tucked stomach, as well as a waist (hourglass shape) when viewed from above. The pet looks thin, skinny or lean. It’s recommended that you increase the pet’s calories or balance their nutrition to help them reach an ideal weight.

3. Ideal Weight

Ribs, spine and other bones are easily felt, but not easily seen. You can feel some body fat and muscle over the ribs. These pets have an obvious well-proportioned waist when viewed from above. The abdomen is raised and not sagging. The pet looks healthy and somewhat muscular.

4. Overweight

You have difficulty feeling or counting the ribs, spine and other bones underneath the fat. You’ll feel fat on the hips, chest, and base of tail. These pets have a pear-shaped waist when viewed from above. The abdomen sags when looking at the pet from the side. The pet looks overweight, heavy, or husky.

5. Obese

You cannot feel the ribs, spines, or other bones due to the large amounts of fat tissue. These pets have no waist but have a broad back when viewed from above. The abdomen significantly sags when looking at the pet from the side. The pet looks tired, finds it difficult to walk, run, or do any other type of exercise due to their heavy weight.

NOTE: If your pet’s score is very thin or obese, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment with a certified veterinarian to address the health issues immediately.

MIND BODY SOUL SPIRIT

Fashionista by Nature;

Pet-Lover by Choice An Interview with Canada`s Jeanne Beker

HPJ: With your jet-setting lifestyle how does being a pet parent enhance your life mind, body and spirit? JB: Oh boy, it just gives me something great to come home to. I can’t imagine not having a dog in my life. I lost my Golden Retriever, Beau, a year ago January. He was 13 years old and I was just absolutely devastated. My heart was so broken. Although I have a cat, I thought that maybe it didn’t really make sense for me to have another dog in my life. A dog is a different type of pet and I think people would agree. About 6 weeks

"There’s something about this guy that’s unbelievable! He’s like a little kid and I love him all the more for it" after, I just thought I was going to die. There’s nothing worse than coming home to that lonely house. There’s a real emptiness and a quiet that was just not very much fun. I just couldn’t imagine life without a dog. That’s how Gus came into my life. HPJ: People have different connections with each of their pets. Do you feel that you have a different connection to Gus than you did with Beau? JB: Yes, however, Beau was such a great dog too. Maybe it’s because both my kids have flown the nest and Gus is really more of my baby. Also, I think it’s a breed thing. I absolutely love Golden Retrievers, and love their personalities so much that I’ve never really had another breed other than a Golden Retriever. I had Beau for 13 years and when I lost him I wanted to immediately go out and get another Golden Retriever. But then my youngest daughter was really against it. She said that another Golden Retriever was just going to remind us too much of Beau and we should look at another breed. Then my girlfriend told me about Golden Doodles. I’ve never known anyone who had one but she knew a few and she said they were great. The second I met Gus I fell in madly in love and went back the next day and adopted him. There’s something about this l guy that’s unbelievable. He’s like a little kid and I love him all the more for it.

18

Volume 4 ISSUE NO 3

MIND BODY SOUL SPIRIT HPJ: Now that your daughters have left home, has Gus made that transition easier? JB: Without question. Having Gus and of course my dear little Moggie, who is my sweet little cat who I’ve had for about 10 years, has made the transition easier. Moggie is a darling and both Moggie and Gus are very, very affectionate. They’re my little family. You can’t replace kids with pets, not by a long shot, but there is something comforting about having these little creatures there to greet you and snuggle up with on the couch or to wake you up in the morning. I don’t let Gus into bed with me but Moggie definitely shares the bed with me many nights and that’s just really nice. HPJ: If Gus were a fashion designer who would he be and why? JB: I’d bet he’d be Jeremy Scott. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Jeremy, but Jeremy is a wonderful designer that has a great sense of humour, very whimsical and goofy. There’s a lot of social commentary in what he does. Everyone loves him because he’s just a great guy. He’s very unpretentious, quirky and carefree in what he does. That’s who Gus is. Maybe Jean Paul Gaultier because of his playfulness. Jean Paul Gaultier is such a big kid on the inside and the little kid in Gus is certainly going to be there forever, the puppy in him will never go away.

house and there’s some great dogs there that Gus is wild about. He’s very, very friendly. He loves other dogs and loves to play. It’s the simple pleasures in life: snuggling on the couch and watching TV and going to the dog park. Who could ask for more? We also enjoy riding around in the city with the top down in my convertible. Gus seems to love that. He’ll be in the backseat with his ears flapping in the breeze.

HPJ: Have you ever considered designing a doggie fashion line?

HPJ: Has Gus gotten into your clothing or anything like that? Shoes?

JB: I would love to! It’s not something I have on the immediate agenda, but why not? I think people know me as a pet owner and a pet lover. I’m not a designer mind you, and I don’t think of myself that way, nor do I promote myself that way ever. But I am an editor and if I can edit a line of women’s clothing the way I do, why can’t I edit a line of doggie wear as a capsule collection? I’d have to find the appropriate people to team up with or the appropriate dogs to team up with.

JB: No, thank God! He hasn’t. He did chew up a pair of my daughter’s ballet flats or one slipper, something like that. But for me, no, and that’s great. Beau devoured the odd Manolo Blahnik and destroyed a pair of my beautiful Mukluks. I think maybe I just take more care around Gus not to leave shoes out.

HPJ: What’s your favourite thing to do with Gus? JB: It’s a cross between snuggling on the couch or taking him to the dog park so that he can play and I can chat with the great community of people who go there. There’s a gorgeous little dog park not far from my

HPJ: What’s his best trick? JB: Gus has a few tricks. He gives you a hug, he can close the door, and he creeps across the floor. Anything for treats, of course! He does on occasion hold a treat on the tip of nose and won’t flip it up in the air to eat it until you tell him to. You can give you the most incredible dog treat and he will hold it in between his teeth and wait to bite it until you tell him that it’s okay to eat it.

HPJ: Would you ever date someone that didn’t like dogs? JB: No. And I think that’s the most important question for a single person. It’s like, “love me and love my dog” and if not, forget about it. Nope, absolutely not. I know it sounds ridiculous, but if a person doesn’t have it within their heart to love an animal, any animal let alone a dog, it’s a turn off. The Joy of Cats!

Cats seem to be creatures of leisure - they certainly don’t run around the yard with wild abandon like their dog counterparts. Most cats are quite content to sit on a windowsill all day long, taking naps and watching the world go by. But that doesn’t mean cats don’t need or enjoy playing games with their owners. Cats love to be mentally and physically stimulated, and they love to spend time playing with you! When it comes to cats, however, play isn’t just about fun and games. For cats in the wild, the act of play is actually a serious business that helps kittens learn important survival skills like stalking, chasing, and trapping prey. Even if your cat never ventures out beyond your home, this basic instinct to hunt can remain strong, which is why it is important to give our cats the opportunity to express this natural behavior through play. Tip #1 It is important to check that the toys selected are safe and appropriate for your particular pet. Be sure that any toy your cat plays with is large enough that it cannot be swallowed. Make sure the toys do not have any small parts, strings, buttons, or bells that a cat might think is a treat and want to eat.

PLAY = EXERCISE

Along with satisfying your cat’s natural instinct, play is also important to keep your pet healthy and happy. Play provides important exercise for cats, especially those that are housebound. Regular play can help prolong your cat’s life by keeping her active and helping to maintain a healthy weight. Interactive play between you and your cat may also prevent behavior problems that can arise from boredom or misdirected aggression at other pets or people in the household. Finally, play is simply a great way to interact with your cat and strengthen the loving bond between you.

Tip #2 With a little help from you, your cat will feel like she’s hunting prey. Drag the end of the toy on the floor for your cat to chase, varying the speed and direction. Don’t make catching the toy too easy, but let her win once in a while to make her feel like a good hunter. Be sure to praise her too.

Exercising your cat’s body as well as her mind is equally important. Of course, cats love movement and they are attracted to it. Global Pet Foods carries many different types of cat toys to help keep your cat busy and occupied. Tip #3 Many cats love rolling toys that are lightweight and easy to bat around. Feeder toys, which dispense food treats as the cat plays with it, are also great devices that encourage play by rewarding your cat for her hard work. Toys filled with catnip can also keep your kitty occupied for hours.

Tip #4 To keep your cat interested in play, put her toys away when playtime is over. If a toy is always available, your kitty might become bored with it. Try to set aside some time each day, at least 20 minutes, for interactive play with your cat. If she wants to play more, indulge her! If you have more than one cat, ensure that all of the cats have an equal opportuniEncouraging play with your cat is an important ty to participate in the part of keeping her happy and healthy.
