Happiness is…having a pet!
Canadian statistics (2014) regarding pet ownership state that 57% of Canadian households have pets. This equates to 7.5 million households. Cats are more popular pets than dogs with 37% of Canadian households having one or more cats, and 32% have dogs. In total there are approximately 5.9 million dogs and 7.9 million cats. 9% of Canadians have other types of pets, which include fish, birds, small mammals and reptiles. That’s a lot of pets!
There are other advantages that we receive from pets too. Time spent with pets has been proven to decrease depression, stress and anxiety in people. In fact, most people in the medical field recognize the benefits of pet therapy programs. There are a number of organizations across Canada that provide support to people in hospitals, schools, senior citizen homes, prisons, etc. Pets help to engage these people in very positive ways, and they help to calm those who are agitated. In addition, pets can help people recover from surgery more quickly.
Wondering whether your children should have a pet? Studies show that children who are raised with a pet reap significant benefits. A good relationship with a pet helps in the development of your child’s non-verbal communication, compassion and empathy. We encourage anyone thinking about adopting a pet to bring their children to our stores to ask as many questions as they want about caring for their pet and finding the right toys or accessories. We’re happy to answer all of their questions! Global Pet Foods is proud to be the “go to” pet specialty retailer for you and your pets. We encourage pet adoption from a local rescue group or an animal shelter. We will assist you with selecting a holistic pet food and essential supplies that will contribute to the ongoing health of the pet.

Pets provide us with significant health benefits. Studies show that living and interacting with a pet can help to lower your blood pressure, improve your immunity and, as studies have shown, living with a pet can decrease one’s risk of heart attack and stroke.
MIND
Winter brings wonderful outdoor time with your pets! A new year, a fresh page, and a greater resolve to make improvements in our personal lives by strengthening our relationships, spending more time with friends and family, taking better care of our personal health ie. exercise, and incorporating more fruits & veggies in our daily diets. We encourage you to ensure that you take steps to do the same for your pets. They depend on you wholly to ensure that their health and welfare is well looked after! The winter season brings some different challenges (as the case with every season!) and we want to ensure that you’re aware of some things that your pet will face and provide you with some tips to overcome them.
Don’t be afraid of the outdoors! As the mercury drops and the nights grow longer, it can negatively impact the moods and mental wellbeing of many people and pets. The natural mood elevator that we receive during the long, sunny days tends to wane in the winter months. This makes it extremely important for adults, children and pets to get that endorphin-boost from outdoor activity. While many of us avoid heading outside during the cold, snowy weather, it’s important that you take your kids (if you have them!) and dog(s) outside for walks. As long as they’re healthy and it’s not too cold outside (ie. arctic temperatures), ensure that you aim for a minimum of a 30 minute walk outdoors. A brisk walk does our body and mind lots of good!
Tips for Outdoor Winter Safety Don’t let winter stop you from heading outside with your pets in the winter. A brisk walk is great for your health and your pet’s health! Just make sure to bundle up the kids and yourself, so that you keep warm while outside. Use a reflective leash and collar so that you can spot your pet easily if it’s dark outside or if the snow is deep. Coats and boots should be a must for dogs on really cold days. Keep pets indoors as much as possible in extremely cold weather. When they go out, stay with them. When you’re cold enough to go in, your pet is probably ready to go back inside too. Make sure that your pet always has fresh, non-frozen drinking water. When animals don’t have regular access to clean water they will turn to gutters and puddles where there is a strong likelihood that they will ingest deadly antifreeze, oil and other chemicals. Your pet’s health will also determine the length of time he stays outdoors. Pets with conditions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and hormonal imbalances can compromise their ability to regulate their own body heat so they should only be outside for a short time. Puppies and senior pets are especially vulnerable to the cold. The cold can be really hard on the joints of older animals that are stiff and tender. Stay directly behind older pets when they are climbing stairs. Stiff and arthritic pets can experience significant injury if they slip on ice, so beware of conditions when you walk them. If you live near a pond or lake be very careful of ice. Animals can easily fall through the ice and can rarely climb
out on their own. Keep your pet on a leash and stay with them when outdoors particularly if you live near water. Beware of your pet becoming trapped while trying to stay warm. Animals left outdoors can be very resourceful in trying to find shelter. They’ll dig into snow banks and hide under porches, into window wells, and cellars where they can become trapped. Always provide warm, accessible shelter and watch them closely. Attaching a bell to your pet’s collar is also recommended. 06 | Healthy Pet Journal Winter 2017

BODY
Do your homework this winter: Eat your veggies! We live in a world full of desperately competing interests wanting our time and money. We are bombarded with marketing messages – FEED THIS FOOD EVERY DAY! And DON’T EVER FEED THAT FOOD. IT’S POISON! Unfortunately most of us don’t have time to sort through it all and end up settling for whatever allows us to move on to the rest of the many tasks we face daily. We’re so pressed for time. We all just want to make good choices to keep our families safe, and our families include our pets, of course. It is hard for me to see the sunshine when I listen to all the negativity, but then I remember something really important that I would like to remind everyone today: The answers to our questions are rarely black-andwhite, and our choices are rarely best-vs-worst, even in the election for the US President. In this stark environment, when making choices about what to feed our families, we need to educate ourselves to slice through the thicket of judgment that springs up around every issue, even of what 08 | Healthy Pet Journal Winter 2017
to feed the cat. Let’s calmly take some time to discover what meets our needs, and is suitable for our family. That is how real people live. In our family we believe that all of us, pets included, live healthier lives eating whole food that is minimally processed, and free of synthetics and chemicals. This means we prepare most of our meals at home with food procured from our local organic Farmers’ Co-op. It does not mean that we never take the kids out for burgers and fries. A further fallout of our pressurized culture is our deficiency of the possession of authentic knowledge. Knowing that just because someone else says it does not make it true. Let’s not just “google” information, let’s find out the whole story before making a decision. In the quest to feed my family whole fresh foods, I have educated myself to know that some natural foods are meant to be eaten raw, some must be cooked to be digestible, and some ought to be avoided because not every body is the same.
BODY
Take the controversy about spinach: Yes, spinach contains oxalic acid, which binds calcium making it harder to absorb. But so do all greens and other vegetables that are high in antioxidants, and that doesn’t mean you can’t eat them. In many studies oxalic acid is linked to the prevention of kidney stones and cancer. When cancer is diagnosed there is always a low level of oxalic acid in the blood. Some of the healthiest foods on earth are high in oxalic acid!
FAVA BEANS The story of the densely nutritious fava bean is another example. The fava bean is an ancient vegetable known for its protein and soluble fibre. Fava beans are loaded with minerals, especially magnesium, potassium, folate and zinc; vitamins including niacin (B3), thiamin (B1), A ,C, K and beta carotene. They are low calorie and have no saturated fat but plenty of fatty acids. Fava beans are a nutrition power-house. Yet some people must avoid them due to Favism, a rare genetic condition affecting people of Mediterranean descent when they eat the raw beans. And fava beans contain naturally-occurring L-dopa, a precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine (the ‘feel good’ hormone), and whose chemical structure is the
basis of several drugs used to treat Parkinson’s. Neither of these is reason for (most) humans or animals to avoid fava beans, yet it appears to be on some pet owners’ ‘not good for dogs’ list. Like spinach, COOKING the fava beans safely changes the chemical structure, making it far less likely to cause a reaction, even if you did have “Favism” (which only affects humans). Cooked fava beans contain considerably less L-dopa than the raw plants (otherwise canned fava beans would cost a fortune, like the drugs do). There is no reason to avoid feeding cooked fava beans to your dog if she likes them.

This winter, let’s make time to curl up in front of the fire and educate ourselves about healthy foods our family may be interested to try. Let’s make informed decisions about what fits our own lifestyle and our values. There is plenty enough judgment and misinformation in the political arena.

Dental care for your pets
You clearly recognize the importance of having a mouth full of healthy teeth and gums. Did you know a lack of regular and attentive care to your pet’s teeth can result in serious health implications? Prevention is the key. Studies show that approximately 80% of dogs who receive little or no dental care will show signs of oral disease by age 3. Pets with poor oral health also have a higher risk of heart, kidney and liver problems, which can lead to their early death.

People often underestimate the steps that need to be taken with their pet’s teeth in order to maintain good health. To ensure that oral health problems do not interfere with your pet’s quality of life, pets should have their teeth brushed on a regular basis. AL DISEASE Don’t assume that you will know when your pet’s D EN T S F O teeth are hurting him or her. Pets will continue S M to eat even if they have tooth pain simply O PT due to hunger. Please note the following: Dental care is critical for your pet’s health. If you are not able to brush your dog’s teeth there are other options when you’re in between vet visits. Consider using oral rinses made especially for cats and dogs. You’ll find a wide variety of oral care products at your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store. Never use human toothpaste because the foaming agents can pose health risks to pets. Do not give your pet any type of candy, ever! Like chocolate, sorbitol-sweetened candy is toxic to dogs. Regular candy is bad for your pet’s teeth (and yours!). Some toys, like nylon tennis balls, can erode the crowns of your dog’s teeth so look for toys that provide some protection. Durable rubber dog toys are a good option. While many brands of dry pet food incorporate dental benefits, giving your pet treats specifically formulated to reduce tartar, plaque build-up and stains is another option to help prevent oral health problems. Many people give their dogs a bone or rawhide as a way to help keep their teeth clean. While these can help keep your pets’ teeth cleaner, they may also cause tooth fractures, or result in your pet ingesting bone shards. Ask our Healthy Pet Care Specialists for assistance in selecting the right product and size of bone or chew for our pet. Also, keep an eye on your pets when they are chewing these products to ensure that they don’t choke on any pieces that may have broken off. Contact your veterinarian if you note changes in your pet’s behaviour or health. The following usually indicates an issue that must be addressed by a professional immediately: your pet stops eating, they have bad breath, they are drooling excessively, their gums are inflamed, their teeth are visibly damaged or they’ve lost a tooth (or teeth). Failure to obtain professional care for dental problems can result in serious health problems for your pets.
Slurp N’ Fresh eliminates bad breath and reduces plaque & tartar! Global Pet Foods carries many dental products. Made in Canada, Slurp n Fresh uses a special blend of natural plant extracts to eliminate odor causing compounds from your pet’s mouth. Slurp n Fresh will reduce plaque & tartar, and help protect your pet’s natural oral environment. Economical to use, simply add a few drops to your pet’s drinking water each time you change it. Contains NO dyes, alcohol, or artificial sweeteners, and will also eliminate Skunk Spray from your pet’s mouth.
In summary: Looking after your pet’s teeth and gums is one key factor in keeping them healthy and happy for many years. You’ll find a wide variety of new and improved dental products for cats and dogs in your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store. Ask our Healthy Pet Care Specialists to help you improve and maintain your pets’ dental health. We want to see your pet’s smile! Healthy Pet Journal Winter 2017 | 11

What the happiest, healthiest pets will be enjoying this year! Introducing eight new varieties of CARU Natural Stews and Treats that taste as good as homemade. If there’s one thing dogs and cats can agree on, it’s that there’s simply no taste like home. Like most of us, our four-legged friends appreciate food and treats prepared with pure, wholesome ingredients – the kind of ingredients you’d find in a kitchen, not a chemistry lab. Besides tasting better and fresher, a just-like-homemade diet can also be beneficial for pets. Toronto natives Adrian and Pamela Pettyan became convinced of this when their Golden Retriever recovered from a chronic ear infection thanks to a healthy homemade diet. That’s the insight that inspired these intrepid healthcare professionals to create a complete line of natural treats and stews. Now the Pettyans would like you to meet eight new members of the CARU family, which are available at Global Pet Foods. 16 | Healthy Pet Journal Winter 2017
BODY
Two drool-worthy canine stews. Joining the four-legged feast are CARU Turkey with Lamb Stew and Chicken with Duck Stew. These savory creations are made from FDA-verified human grade ingredients in the USA and are completely grain-free. They’re also prepared without any genetically engineered (GMO) ingredients, just like the entire CARU Stew line. These new additions are also white potato free and are made with delicious pumpkin and lentils. They’re great served straight from the carton, or used as a tasty topper to enhance the flavor and nutritional value of dry food.
Three wildly tasty canine treats. Want to satisfy your dog’s taste for adventure? CARU Soft ‘n Tasty Treats are now available in three exciting new varieties – Alligator, Rabbit and Wild Boar. These bite-sized morsels contain real, USDA-inspected meat as the first ingredient, as well as a healthy helping of blueberries and cranberries. Like the rest of the CARU Treat family, they’re made without any GMO ingredients and are 100% grain free.
Two delectable feline treats. After a hard day of batting shadows and pouncing on balls of yarn, your cat deserves to take a savory break with CARU Soft ‘n Tasty Salmon or Chicken Baked Bites treats. Made without grains, GMO ingredients or artificial preservatives, these new “meat-first” treats have a soft, chewy texture and home-style flavor that’s especially appealing to cats.
One naturally nourishing broth. Want to surprise your dog or cat with a healthy, heartwarming reward? Serve them CARU Grass-Fed Beef Bone Broth! Based on a centuries old savory creation, this culinary classic is slowly simmered at a low temperature to retain its nutritional value and homemade taste. Prepared in small batches with 100% human grade, non-GMO ingredients, it’s made exclusively in the United States. Simply pop open a handy carton and pour into a bowl. Or add a splash to dry kibble or a raw diet and watch even the pickiest eaters lick their bowl clean! For more reasons why these just-like-homemade stews and treats are so tasty and nourishing for dogs and cats, visit www.car upetfood.com. Shop for these products at your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store.
It all started with Karu. No, that’s not a misspelling - our Golden Retriever spells his name with a K! We’re Pamela and Adrian Pettyan, proud pet parents and Canadian medical professionals who ran a primary health care center for families in our local community. And yes, there really is a Karu! Practically from puppyhood, Karu had constant ear infections. To address this problem, our veterinarian suggested a homemade diet consisting of pure, healthy, nutritious food. From the day, we switched Karu to this new dietary routine, we found that he was more playful and healthy. From our health care background, we couldn’t understand why there weren’t pet food products at our local stores that were as good as what we could make at home. So, in close collaboration with an accomplished animal Ph.D. nutritionist, we created a complete line of nourishing meals and treats that look, smell and taste as good as homemade food. Today, our beloved 12-year-old pooch has all the vim and vigor of a puppy. We hope your pet is as wild about CARU products as Karu!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Now that there’s snow in most regions across Canada it’s time to ensure that our driveways and sidewalks are properly cleared to avoid people slipping and falling. It’s also time to think about our pets and their paws. The salt and other ice-melting products used by towns and cities across Canada can cause significant issues for people and their pets. In fact, under the Environment and Climate Change tab on the Government of Canada’s website, it states the following:
Environment Canada has completed a 5 year Review of Progress that indicates the Code has been effective in increasing the use of best practices for managing road salts in Canada. The Code and Review were developed in consultation with a Multistakeholder Working Group for Road Salts.
A comprehensive five-year scientific assessment by Environment Canada determined that in sufficient concentrations, road salts pose a risk to plants, animals and the aquatic environment. A Risk Management Strategy for Road Salts was subsequently developed to outline the measures that Environment Canada proposes in order to manage the risks associated with road salts.
Most road salt is composed of chloride combined with sodium, calcium, magnesium or potassium. Road salt may also contain ferrocyanide salts and, depending on where it’s sourced, other contaminants such as heavy metals.
The Code of Practice recommends that road authorities prepare salt management plans that identify actions they will take to improve their practices in salt storage, general use on roads and snow disposal.

Under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, the Government of Canada published a Code of Practice for the Environmental Management of Road Salts on April 3, 2004. The Code is designed to help municipalities and other road authorities better manage their use of road salts in a way that reduces their impacts on the environment while maintaining road safety.
In light of the above, we strongly suggest that you take steps to reduce or eliminate using salt on your own driveways and sidewalks. Further, we ask that you be mindful of your pet’s paws when you’re taking your dogs outside in the snow. Your dogs’ paws can burn and crack when they’re walking on salt-treated sidewalks and road. Once back in the house, your dog may lick their paws due to the irritation, which means their also ingesting the salt. This can lead to inflammation of both the mouth and their digestive system, and cause health issues if they’re ingesting salt on a regular basis, due to the toxins in the salt.
BODY
Using pet-friendly ice melt will greatly benefit your pet’s health, and the health of your family. Global Pet Foods carries a few different brands, one being Paw Thaw. Paw Thaw is a safer, biodegradable ice melter that will not harm your pet when used as directed. See the features and benefits of Paw Thaw below. Fast Acting Paw Thaw combines the most effective de-icing blend components available, creating the desired reaction to initiate deicing and meltdown. Paw Thaw breaks the bond between the ice and the surface area. Environmentally Formulated The Non-hygroscopic formula is less harmful to grass, trees or other vegetation. Water soluble and odourless. Non Tracking: Will not harm carpets or floors and will not damage footwear. No slimy sticky residue to clean up. Non Corrosive Paw Thaw guards against concrete corrosion by forming a protective coating on the surface. Do not use on precast or concrete less than 1 year old. Non Slip Special ‘Dolomite’ formula provides added traction control.
We also recommend the following steps: Massage an all-natural/human grade paw protector into paw pads before going outside. This can help protect their paws from salt and chemical agents. If your pets will tolerate them, another suggestion is to outfit your dog in boots or socks (waterproof). Both the Paw Protectors and Dog Boots can be found at your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store. Avoid roads, sidewalks and other surfaces that have been salted. Wash your pet’s feet and underbelly with warm water (not hot!) as soon as you are back inside and dry them thoroughly. If your dog is long-haired, ice balls can also create problems for him. Chunks of ice can develop between the toes and pads of long haired dogs as they walk outside in the snow and cold. To prevent this, we suggest you keep your dog well groomed during the winter, which means keeping the hair on their feet trimmed.

SPIRIT
Show Us Your Heart was launched in 2006, with the intent to support smaller, community-based organizations - the local shelters and pet rescue groups that don’t receive government funding or have their own fundraising departments. The volunteers who operate and work with these organizations often do it on their own dime. In many cases much of this work can boil down to one theme: blood, sweat and tears. Every February, each Global Pet Foods store across Canada selects a local shelter in its community to support. We then ask pet lovers across the country to donate one dollar and we match it with another dollar. 100% of the donations go back to animal shelters and pet rescue groups within the community of each of our stores. With the help of our generous customers, Global Pet Foods has now raised over $1,250,000 for over 125 animal shelters and pet rescue groups across Canada. Those funds have helped all of the organizations pay vet bills, buy supplies and keep their doors open -- all in the quest to find “forever” homes for thousands of pets across Canada. Emily spent nearly a month as a foster cat at the Global Pet Foods store in Fredricton, NB waiting for her forever family to walk through the door. Emily was patient and thankfully, last November her wishes were answered. Someone came into the Fredericton store who was a perfect fit. She was adopted by a lovely individual who already has an older cat and is more then equipped to provide a loving home for Emily. We wish them both a beautiful life together!

Show Us Your Heart isn’t just any ordinary store fundraiser. It’s a chance to directly give back to animal caregivers who give their whole hearts to help homeless pets each day. This year we feature someone who oversees one of the organizations for whom we raise money, Deanna Thompson. Deanna is the Executive Director of the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society, which is based in Calgary, Alberta. In Alberta, thousands of cats and dogs are homeless, abandoned, abused or living in horrendous conditions. AARCS works closely with rural and First Nations communities where there is limited to no animal services. In 2015, AARCS took in over 2,000 cats and dogs. They cared for them by providing medical care, spaying/neutering, vaccinating and then found their forever families. AARCS also has assistance programs such as Spay/Neuter, TNR (TrapNeuter-Return) for Cats and Emergency Medical Assistance. Deanna was featured in the Avenue Magazine, as one of the Top 40 Under 40 Class of 2016. The article regarding Deanna is featured on the next page.

“
I work way more hours for way less money, but it doesn’t even seem like work to me. ~ Deanna Thompson, Executive Director of AARCS
”
Over the last 10 years, Thompson has shepherded a newly formed non-profit into a respected animalwelfare agency that provides expertise in animal rescue during natural disasters. Quitting your office job to work with rescued animals is something many people talk about doing, but Deanna Thompson actually did it. In 2006, while working for Husky Energy, Thompson began volunteering with the newly formed non-profit Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS), earning the rank of board president. In 2010, when AARCS decided to hire its first full-time employee, Thompson stepped up. The move involved a huge salary cut, but six years on, she still says it was worth it. “I work way more hours for way less money, but it doesn’t even seem like work to me,” she says. In the 10 years Thompson has been at the helm of AARCS, the organization has grown into a respected animal welfare agency with a $2-million annual budget and a staff of 16 (including Thompson as executive director), a shelter in northeast Calgary and a chapter in Edmonton. The organization has a corps of 1,000 volunteers and 500 foster families and rescued more than 2,300 dogs and cats in 2015, a marked increase from 50 dogs in 2006. In 2013, Thompson mobilized the AARCS teams during the floods in southern Alberta, saving more than 600 animals and earning recognition from the Town of High River, the Siksika First Nation and the Alberta Government, which named her a “Hero of the Floods.” The experience led to AARCS being called in to assist with pet retrieval operations in the aftermath of this year’s Fort McMurray wildfire. Working with peace officers and professional locksmiths over 11 days, AARCS was able to assist in rescuing 1,100 animals. Though much of what Thompson does these days is administrative, she still likes to get her hands dirty, going out on rescue missions or pitching in to clean kennels. She volunteers six to eight weekends per year with the Alberta Spay Neuter Task Force at clinics in First Nations communities, and she recently travelled to India to vaccinate dogs with Mission Rabies.
▶ Many of the Global Pet Foods stores in Alberta often partner with AARCS by holding Adopt-a-thons and fundraisers in their stores throughout the year.

Give a little. Help a lot! It is our pleasure to work with Deanna, and many more people who operate and volunteer to work with animal shelters or rescue groups across Canada. Since our stores are in their communities all across the country, they see that the funds are being put to great use. We salute the many people across the country – people like Deanna, and thousands more men and women who, on their own time and in many cases, with their own money, rescue and care for homeless animals. We ask for your support in making a donation to our Show Us Your Heart Fundraising Campaign, so that we in turn can support over 125 organizations across Canada.
