Keep your pets
SAFE and cool this Summer
WELCOME TO SUMMER
- open windows, outdoor fun in the backyard or at the park, summer camps, vacations, and/or simply soaking up the heat and sun and with our families – summer is a favourite time of the year for many of us! Have fun and enjoy the season but remember to take some safety measures and precautions to ensure that your companion pets keep healthy and happy.
Mind the Paws Sidewalks, streets, patios, sand and other surfaces can burn your pet’s footpads. We recommend that you walk your dog in the morning and at night when the outdoor surfaces are coolest. If you must take your pets outside during the day, place your hand on the patio or sidewalk for 30 seconds before allowing them to walk on them. If it’s quite painful or too hot for you, it will be too hot and painful for your pets. A pet footpad balm, which you’ll find at your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods stores, is ideal for irritated paws.
Harmful Chemicals Commonly used flea and tick products, mouse and rat baits, citronella candles, oil products, and lawn and garden products (ie. mulch and insecticides) can be harmful to cats and dogs if ingested, so please lock them away. Wipe your pet’s paws and underbelly to remove any chemical residue before heading back in the house. While many dogs love to swim, chlorine can irritate a dog’s skin and upset their stomach. Rinse your dog with fresh water after swimming in a pool and do not let them drink more than a small amount of pool water. Call your veterinarian immediately if you suspect that your pet has ingested a poisonous substance.
Protect Your Pet From the Sun Even though your pet’s fur helps to protect their skin from the sun, they can get sunburned, especially those with light skin and hair. Dogs and cats will suffer from sunburn in the same way we do, and they can also be at risk for skin cancer. Try to keep your pets out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm, and if you have to head outside, rub a bit of sunblock on unprotected areas like the tips of the ears, the skin around the lips, and the tip of their nose.
Camping and Barbeques Summer is a wonderful time for barbeques and camping, but it can be dangerous for your pets if you don’t take the necessary provisions to keep them on a very short leash. Dogs may try to take a burning stick from the campfire, and they’ll think that you’re playing if you chase after them. Dogs may also be tempted to lick the particles of food stuck to the barbecue after cooking, which could cause them to burn their mouths and tongues. Running with a stick may result in your dog or other people in the vicinity being burned or injured too. Please also remember to keep the lighter fluid out of reach from pets as it is a poison and, if ingested, can lead to severe illness or death.
Summer flies by so quickly, so we encourage you to enjoy every moment of it. Global Pet Foods carries the best products that will help your pets enjoy the season too and keep them safe and healthy. We look forward to seeing you and your pets in your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store! www.shutterstock.com

MIND
DOG PARK ETIQUET TE For most dog owners, going to the dog park is a fun way to let your dog get exercise while socializing with other dogs and lets you socialize with people while keeping an eye on your dogs. We all need to be mindful of proper dog park etiquette when we visit in order to keep the park, and the dogs, safe and fun for all. Once you and your dog get to the dog park it may be tempting to just stand back and watch all the activity while your dog runs around. Everyone will have a much more rewarding time if you observe some basic "Dog Park" etiquette. While many of the suggestions below are more common sense than anything, it’s often observed by many that they’re not heeded regularly.
Do's
Don'ts
Keep your dog on-leash until you get to the offleash area. This is not just respectful to other park users, it’s much safer for your dog.
Bring a dog that is under 4 months of age. They won’t have had all the necessary inoculations that allow them to play safely with other animals.
Close all doors to the dog park after entering or exiting.
Take your dog if she is sensitive to other dogs and if there are more than approximately two dogs per every 180 sq. ft. of space.
Observe the dogs in the park to see if there are any potential health or behavioural problems before entering. Clean up after your dog.
Allow dogs to form loose packs.
Supervise your dog(s) when they are playing and interrupt any rough play.
Allow a dog to bully another.
Be willing to leave the dog park if you feel that your dog is being a bully or being bullied, the play is getting too rough, or your dog is just not having fun. Check to be sure there aren’t a large number of male dogs who are unneutered at the park. Be cautious about taking advice from other park patrons who are not dog professionals.
Ever let your dog off-leash in an unfenced dog park if he/she is not responsive to your verbal commands. Worry if some dogs don’t play with other dogs in a dog park. Bring your dog if he/she has not be spayed or neutered yet. If your male dog is not neutered, he may constantly try and mount other dogs.
Be friendly with other dog owners. It’s more enjoyable if everyone is nice to each other.
Spend your time talking on a cell phone. It’s important that you supervise your dog at all times and be able to give your dog your full attention.
Always observe all of the rules posted at your local dog park. Each town has its own set of by-laws.
Don’t scold or touch someone else’s dog. You wouldn’t want them to do that to your dog.
And always, have fun! 6
Bring or use treats and toys when other dogs are nearby.

Keep your cat cool in the summer heat
www.shutterstock.com
Most cats have a higher tolerance for the warmer temperatures than dogs do, but this doesn’t mean that you should assume that they don’t require additional care during the summer months. It’s important that you keep them cool during the hot summer days and continue to keep an eye on them for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Water
BODY
It’s important that your cat has plenty of fresh water on a daily basis. If someone is at home during the day, we recommend that they replace the water several times to ensure its freshness. We also suggest that you place a few bowls around your home to ensure that water is always within easy reach for your cat(s). Put three or four ice cubes into your cat’s water bowl before you head out which will help keep the water cool for a longer period of time. If no one is at home during the day, you may want to invest in an automatic waterer (you can find them at your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store) so that your cat has a continual supply of fresh water. A waterer is ideal because the water is always circulating and filtered which helps to reduce the amount of bacteria in your cat’s water dish. Another great idea is to fill a small bottle with cold water and leave it in the freezer overnight. Before you head out of the house the next day, wrap the bottle in a towel and put it in your cat’s favourite lounging place. They’ll be happy to find it!
NOTE: Water expands when it freezes so don’t fill the bottle to the top to avoid it bursting.
Keep them cool
Cats generally like finding a “sunny” spot to nap and if they get too hot, they’ll find a shady spot to cool down. Ideally, during the hot summer months, you’ll need a few shady and/or cool places for them to retreat to. Providing them with a place to sit beside an open window (please ensure that it’s screened!) is ideal. For those of you with air conditioning, kitchen and bathroom tiles, and even the bathroom sink, may be your cat's favourite places. If you don’t have air conditioning, setting a small box fan and on the floor or near an open window will help to circulate the air and provide some respite. If your house is not air conditioned, placing a frozen water bottle in front of the fan may help too. Investing in an elevated cot (these are available at most Global Pet Foods stores) is ideal. Cots elevate the bed off the ground and may provide your pet with some comfort since the air can pass under the bed, helping to keep them cool. The warmest part of a cat’s body is their stomach, the pads of their paws, their armpits, under their chin and on the outside of their ears. Even though most felines detest getting wet, we recommend that if your cat appears quite warm, you gently rub your cat’s head and back with a dampened cold cloth to help cool them down.
Grooming
Cats should be brushed often, particularly during the summer because a well-groomed, tangle-free coat will help to keep them cool. You may notice that your cat grooms itself more than usual. Note that this is a cooling mechanism, similar to sweating and as the saliva evaporates off its fur, your cat will cool down. For those of you with “outdoor cats” we recommend that you don't let them outside between 10 am and 3 pm during really hot and humid days. Cats can suffer from sunburn, so we recommend that you apply a pet sunscreen to noses and ears of light-coloured cats, before they head outside.
Cats need to be monitored during really hot summer days in the same way that dogs do. If you allow your cat to be outdoors, it’s very important that you're keeping an eye on them, especially on very hot days. Kittens and senior cats should be kept indoors when the temperature spikes. Even though summer appears to be the shortest season of the year, it’s a time when we need to be particularly vigilant about monitoring the health and safety of our family members, including our pets. This week’s question comes from one of our consumers asking about sprouted barley. He wants to feed grain-free to his dog but he LOVES our Flora4 organic sprouted seeds and wants to know how it’s grain-free, even though it has barley. It’s confusing, I admit. There is a lot of misunderstanding on the internet, but we did our research too, and here is the simple explanation. Get out your pencil; you are about to get a botany lesson.

grain and a seed are different parts of the plant. They have much different nutrition and digestibility. The grain is the edible ”fruit” of the plant, usually found at the top of a stalk, and very often called a ‘seed’ on the internet. It has a moderate amount of nutrition and digestibility for some animals, and provides most of the cereals eaten by people all over the world. The seed, on the other hand contains all the nutrients required to build a new plant. These nutrients are dormant and protected within a hard shell until the seed is germinated, or sprouted. Then it activates (enzymatically speaking) and becomes extremely digestible and a super-food supplier of nutrition. Barley is a cereal grain when harvested for its fruit (the grain we grind into flour), but its seed contains 10 Healthy Pet Journal Summer 2017
no gluten because the protein is significantly reduced in the enzymatic process during sprouting. The protein containing the gluten will increase later in the mature plant’s fruit. Both wheat grass and barley grass are considered gluten-free until they begin to produce fruit. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in its finalized gluten-free label rules, has said that wheat grass and barley grass could be used to make foods labeled gluten-free, as long as the finished products contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten (which can get mixed in during processing of the rest of the plant). Carna4’s sprouted barley seed has so little plant protein in it that it would be considered gluten-free by the FDA rules. So the short answer to the question is that barley seed will grow a harvestable plant classified as a grain, but

T
he "dog days" of summer can be deadly for dogs, or any animals for that matter, that are left outside for long periods of time in the hot sun and extreme heat. Pets are at risk for heat exhaustion or even worse, heatstroke. Heatstroke is a very serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. Once the signs of heatstroke are detected, there is very little time for medical attention before serious damage – or even death – can occur. Dogs and cats do not sweat through their skin like humans. Once they get hot, instead of sweating, dogs will pant to cool themselves down. Panting helps to circulate the necessary air through a dog’s body, and helps him to cool down. But if dogs "overheat" they are at risk for heatstroke. NOTE: Short-nosed breeds such as Pugs and Bulldogs, large, heavy-coated breeds, and dogs with heart or respiratory problems are at a greater risk for heatstroke.
If you suspect that your dog is suffering from heatstroke then you must take action quickly but calmly.
Move your dog out of the heat and away from the sun immediately. Begin cooling your dog with cool water by placing wet washcloths on the foot pads and around the head. Continue to use fresh, cool rags. Avoid covering the entire body with wet towels as they may trap the heat in.
12 Healthy Pet Journal Summer 2017
Over-cooling can cause hypothermia, resulting in other health issues. When the body temperature reaches 39 degrees Celsius, stop cooling. At this point, your dog’s body should continue to cool down on its own.
DO NOT use ice or ice water! Extreme cold can cause the blood vessels to constrict, preventing the core of your dog’s body from cooling and actually causing the internal temperature to further rise. Offer your dog cool water but do not force it into your dog’s mouth and don’t let him drink excessive amounts.

Healthy Tip: Do you know where your nearest emergency veterinarian clinic is? Is there a 24-hour clinic close to where you live? If you don’t know, now is an excellent time to find out. Post the information on your fridge and add the contact details to your smartphone. Don’t wait until you have an emergency with your pet to look for the nearest services.

Call or visit a certified veterinarian right away, even if your dog seems better. There may be internal damage as a result, so an examination is strongly recommended. Treatment may include further cooling techniques, intravenous fluid therapy to counter shock, or medication to prevent or reverse brain damage, if needed.

SOUL We’re quite lucky to live in such a great country as Canada! Years ago, before planes were the ideal way to travel, summer road trips by car were the “in-thing”. It was a great way to bond with the family and create some wonderful memories while exploring our vast and beautiful country.
Y
ou will need to prepare well in advance for your road trip, whether you have kids and pets or just pets (aka furkids!), in order to ensure that everyone is happy and healthy during your great Canadian journey. Below is a checklist of things that you will need. Visit your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store; our sales associates can assist you with selecting and purchasing these items. All pets should be restrained in a seat belt harness, backseat barriers, pet kennels or crates, or pet carriers during travel. Kennels or crates should be secured to the vehicle’s floor. Ensure that the pet has enough room to comfortably sit and/or lie down in the crate or kennel. Ensure that you have identification tags (and include your cellphone number) securely attached to your pet’s collar in advance of your travel just in case you become separated during your trip.
Bring enough pet food to last for the duration of your trip. You may not find the brand that you normally feed while on the road and the last thing you want to do is to switch to a different food and risk upsetting your pet’s stomach. Make sure that you purchase a properly fitted lifejacket and that your pets wear them when on a boat with you or when swimming in choppy or deep water.
Bringing your pets on vacation with you just adds to the fun and you won’t have to worry about finding someone to care for them while you’re away. Planning your travel in advance, will help to make your family vacation a really fun and relaxing time for everyone. Visit your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store before you hit the road and speak to our Healthy Pet Care Specialists for tips and product recommendations to keep your pets happy and healthy while traveling. And most importantly, have a wonderful time! 18 Healthy Pet Journal Summer 2017
