PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Fall / Winter 2012

It was a busy and inspired summer at Global Pet Foods. Like many of you, the London Games energized us to “go for gold” and find innovative ways to enhance our service and expand our store and product offering. In the spirit of the Games, Global Pet Foods was proud to sponsor Canadian Modern Pentathletes Melanie McCann and Donna Vakalis in their quest for success. As Canada’s healthy choice for pets, we are always looking for unique ways to encourage and inspire pet parents to become more active. Melanie and Donna are not only exceptional athletes, but also super pet parents who are dedicated to including their animals in their active lifestyle. This summer we also had the privilege of catching up with leading Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist, W. Brett Wilson. Despite Mr. Wilson’s packed schedule, he still makes time to give back to the community in a meaningful way, and of course kick back with his favourite four-legged friend, J. Cash Wilson! Our customers also serve as daily inspiration to us. Your commitment to providing the best for your pets drives us to source the latest and healthiest products to help your pet lead a longer, healthier life. Through our recently re-launched website and revamped PetZone program (visit www.globalpetfoods.com) we aim to educate you with the latest tips and advice on pet care, entertain you with fun contests and connect you with pet friendly events in your community. With more stores to serve you in the provinces of Alberta, BC, Ontario, and Nova Scotia and even greater product selection, we will continue to empower you with the tools to help enrich your companion pets’ lives. I encourage you to stop by your local Global Pet Foods store to see what’s new! As the kids go back to school and we fall back into our regular routines, may the spirit of the London 2012 Games live on and inspire us to be our best and lead an active, healthy lifestyle with our companion pets. Warm Regards,

Jim Walker, President, Global Pet Foods

EMBRACING SEASONAL CHANGE Having a healthy pet is so much more than just feeding it quality pet food. It’s about ensuring our pets are mentally stimulated, properly trained, well socialized, physically fit and that their changing needs are proactively addressed. In this issue of the Healthy Pet Journal, we feature several fun, new toys that will keep your cat agile and occupied. You will also notice that we’ve included more unique and on trend products for your good dog. Check out our Fabulous Fall Finds for a fresh new selection of active fashion and quality products. Socializing, getting exercise and having a good time – it’s not just good for dogs, it’s good for people too. Read about the innumerable benefits dog parks offer and how they are key to the health and wellbeing of our communities. We welcome expert dog (and people) trainer, Gillian Ridgeway to our Healthy Pet family. Gillian has had decades of experience providing people with sound advice on how to communicate with their dog. Coach K9 highlights the necessity of consistency and that it is key to effectively training your pet. Our in-house Holistic Vet, Dr. Paul McCutcheon stresses the importance of routine and wants you to know that your cat misses you when you are away. We need to be considerate of our pet’s need for routine and aware of how our cats can be negatively impacted by inconsistent care. We also explore the magical healing power of therapy pets and the positive effects the human animal bond can have on those less fortunate. And speaking of magical healing power, inside these pages, we explain how a cat’s purr can help humans heal. I am not unlike many Canadians who love and appreciate the beauty of our season’s changes. I embrace the colder climes with fresh energy and a renewed zest for life. As the days become shorter and colder, there is no better time to appreciate what our pets bring into our lives. Take stock of the pleasure your animal companion brings into your day. Use their unconditional love to find inspiration in the people and world around you.

What’s New In-Store? Canine Caviar Now available at Global Pet Foods, Canine Caviar is the first, true holistic pet food and the only grain-free and alkaline-based pet food diet in North America, specifically designed to help reduce the risk of cancer and other health related conditions. It is not the cure for cancer, but it does provide the ingredients for a holistic and healthy lifestyle pet plan. Canine Caviar Pet Foods are based from formulas developed by Jeff Baker, Research Scientist and the Canine Caviar research team. The foundation for the formula was created in 1996 out of necessity, as Jeff was desperate to relieve his own Great Dane Mogul, of his struggles with severe allergic reactions. Jeff’s background in pharmacology and nutrition was a perfect blend to develop the best pet food through research. Canine Caviar’s easily digested formula will quickly settle digestive upsets, reduce itching, scratching, shedding and hotspots. Their new, proprietary blend offers a fermentation culture that provides a potent probiotic result once it is in the belly. The diets are pH balanced and low in ash. This product was proven to be more effective than others in the marketplace through an independent study.

Kudos to Global Pet Foods-sponsored Olympic Athletes “We’d like to congratulate

superb athletes Melanie McCann and Donna Vakalis for their 11th and 29th (consecutively) finishes at the summer Olympics. We were thrilled to be able to support two of Canada’s top female athletes!

Jim Walker, Global Pet Foods President DONNA VAKALIS

Modern Pentathlon is the sport that challenges your mind as well as your body. It was introduced as a new sport with the resurgence of the modern Olympics in the early 1900’s. The five-disciplined sport includes fencing, swimming, equestrian, shooting and running broken down into four events. The individual events represent the diverse attributes of a Napoleonic officer, including fitness (running and swimming), control and concentration (shooting), agility and speed (fencing), and determination, adaptability and courage (riding and jumping an unfamiliar horse). It was only at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where women were first allowed to compete. Global Pet Foods was proud to sponsor Canada’s exceptional Team at the London Games. Melanie and Donna connected with us and described their most memorable moments representing Canada this summer at the London Olympics:

MELANIE MCCANN

“Chilling out with the security dog whose job it was to patrol the Olympic Village at night with his human partner. This dog was really smart and sweet and loved the Canada Moose. Another memorable moment was jogging around the course with all of the other Olympic pentathlon competitors in front of 23,000 international cheering fans in beautiful Greenwich Park.” Donna Vakalis

“It was absolutely the moment when Canada was called to walk in the stadium at the Opening Ceremonies. I have been dreaming of that moment for a very long time and to have lived it, is surreal. To be part of the greatest team in the world and walk together as one while the world cheers is indescribable.” Melanie McCann

Gillian Ridgeway is the Director of Who’s Walking Who Dog Training Centres in Toronto and Ajax, Ontario. She has been featured on innumerable radio and television programs and penned a monthly column in Dogs In Canada Magazine for 9 years. Gillian is a guest lecturer at the University of Toronto, using dogs to shed light on learning theory to psychology students. She shares her home with two dogs, and is involved in dog sports and canine performance teams.

BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR CONSISTENCY There is very little that is more important when dealing with your dog than being consistent. Like my mother used to tell me, “Say what you mean and mean what you say”. That is the crux of being consistent, and to do so will maintain a constant level of success. Being consistent means you must have a well thought-out plan when teaching your dog a skill, and also when you are

working towards managing situations such as housetraining or behavioural issues. Your dog relies on you to be clear with your directions. After all, you don’t speak each other’s language, no matter how hard you try. By being consistent in both your expectations of your dog’s behaviour and in your demeanour, you will be able to help your dog understand the consequences and rewards of what is being asked of them. What this means is that instead of reacting to your dog’s lack of understanding with frustration, make sure that you follow through with respect and with a motivational teaching style. Create a plan of action in advance, and follow it carefully. We see this happen time after time when dealing with our clients and their pups. They ask the dog to stay, the dog does well, and he gets a reward. Next time, they ask him to stay, and he gets up and he is scolded. The next day the exercise is the same but the mood of the person has changed. The dog gets up and now he is given a pat anyway. Why? Most of the time the person has not developed a well thoughtout plan and when we ask our clients why they pat pooch when an action has not been accomplished, they often shrug and say they feel sorry for him. In fact, this is confusing to the dog, and is not as kind as they had hoped. This often leads to stress in the dogs, and a downward spiral in training. In order to be consistent, make a plan and stick with it. Make the plan fair and kind. If the dog gets up, he is ignored. No leash pop, and no scolding. If

12

he does not get up, reward with what he finds rewarding. When an action receives reward, the drive to action will become stronger. Creating consistency in your training plan will allow you and your dog to work in harmony together.

Coach K9’s Training Tips & Hints •

Make a training plan and stick with it. Be consistent with your thoughts and actions. Make sure your dog understands the consequences, so he can choose to do the right behaviour.

Don’t let your plan be derailed by your own variance of mood. If you are having a difficult day, make your training session short or give yourself the space you need to deal with your dog effectively.

Be clear and fair. Do not react to your dog’s behaviour with a spontaneous reaction. Respond with a well thought-out plan.

The Power of the Purr

Dr. Paul McCutcheon is founder and director of the East York Animal Clinic in Toronto.

Your cat misses you! I am the first to rise in the morning and upon entering our kitchen I am greeted by Tommy, our 12 year old cat. Every morning I feed him and he joins me for breakfast. Very occasionally Tommy isn’t there. That upsets me and I frantically search the house until I find him. So you can imagine how he must feel if I don’t show up! Sometimes our routines have to change. Kids go back to school, there are changes in our work schedule, vacations take place or we relocate our home. Our cats are very place-oriented, and they thrive on consistent routine. I appreciate that environmental changes are inevitable, but your cat doesn’t appreciate the circumstances creating that change. The ensuing stress can have behavioural and health repercussions. Boredom can also be a major stress factor. If there are household changes occurring, please give your feline companion some special consideration. If you are absent for extended periods of time, have someone familiar visit. You can make a special effort to play more when you are home. And there are lots of cat toys available to help you interact with them and amuse them when you are gone. If changes in your lifestyle occur, consider the implications and try to minimize the impact on your feline friends. If your cat is experiencing high anxiety, you might consider feline pheromone sprays or diffusers or Bach Flower Essences.

Several million households in Canada unknowingly have a sophisticated medical device in their home – the domestic cat. We all know that having a purring cat sitting next to us is a very pleasant experience, and now scientists have discovered that purring can literally help our bones heal. For many years, vibration and mild electrical stimulation have been used as therapies for bone fractures. It just so happens that a cat purrs at 2550Hz, which is the optimal frequency to speed mending of our broken bones. Research is now underway to determine how best to harness this marvelous benefit that our cats bring to us. It is believed that this healing power could come to the aid of people suffering from osteoporosis, post-menopausal women, and perhaps soft tissue injuries to ligaments or tendons. So be sure to give Tigger a scritch under the chin often, as it will make him and your bones happy!

The Dog Park: A small patch of grass with a big bunch of benefits Many of us live in communities that have invested space and resources in a happy-pet essential – the dog park. These open spaces offer many benefits and opportunities for dogs and people alike. The biggest benefit is also the simplest: the great outdoors. There are few prescriptions for the wellbeing of pets and humans that outdo fresh air, sunshine, and stretching our legs. Lowering blood pressure, reducing stress, improving sleep, maintaining strength and mobility are all offered for free, simply by getting and staying outdoors for extended periods. While taking your dog for a walk can be an excellent opportunity to enjoy some peace and quiet in the midst of our often hectic schedules, a dog park presents us with an equally valuable opportunity: a ready-built social network. Both dogs and people require and thrive within healthy social networks. Dogs are pack animals. The routine snout-to-snout contact they get in the park allows them to be properly socialized. Like a secret society, there are many unwritten and unseen rules for dogs to follow with their fellow canines, and they can only learn and practice them with regular contact with other dogs. Anyone who has spent time in a dog park will tell you that they truly relish the friendships they make there. Not only do they enjoy the entertainment provided by the frolicking dogs, they do so while spending time with people with whom they have something in common. One final benefit is a chance to learn. The dog park is an excellent venue for discussing all things dog. The latest news and ideas on dog care, products for nutrition, health, playtime and training are always popular topics for discussion. Global Pet Foods is pleased to offer you all the latest accessories and essentials for the optimal dog park experience. So head on out for fun, fresh air and fitness, and be sure to stop by your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods, so that you and your dog are ready to get the most out of your time, together.

Celebrity Interview W. Brett Wilson is one of Canada's most successful entrepreneurs, innovative philanthropists, and passionate dog lovers. He is “dad” to dog J. Cash and keeps departed Maja forever in his heart. Brett is a strong supporter of Humane Societies, and in 2010, founded the W. Brett Wilson Family Dog Park at the Calgary Humane Society.

HPJ: How do you balance having a pet with your busy work life?

HPJ: How does being a pet parent enhance your life – mind, body and spirit?

WBW: Nope. When we lost Maja to cancer it was very hard and I decided it would be impossible to replace her. But Cash is very different!

WBW: It’s all about unconditional love! HPJ: Has being a pet parent benefited you from a health perspective? WBW: Lets just say that he keeps me active and I have to share my food which sometimes gives me smaller portions.

WBW: Cash comes to the office daily, so taking him for a walk at lunch helps me get out of the office and come back for the afternoon refreshed and with a new perspective. Cash keeps everyone smiling at the office. HPJ: After your beloved dog Maja passed away, did you think you would ever get another dog?

HPJ: We read in the Calgary Herald that you adopted Cash from a friend of yours. Did it take much convincing or was it love at first pat? WBW: I agreed to meeting Cash one August afternoon. Once I met him I knew he was meant to be mine. I love his spirit and energy. So you could definitely say it was love at first pat. HPJ: For those Canadians who may not have known you prior to joining Dragon’s Den, it became evident that you were the “Dragon with a Heart”. Your commitment to philanthropy is admirable. Are you regularly involved with pet-related causes or fund-raising events? WBW: I support the Calgary Humane Society. Maja and I modelled many times in the Fundraising Gala, Cocktails for Critters, always a fun time. I also funded the Maja Wilson Dog Park at the Humane Society. HPJ: Why do you think your fans have embraced your dogs so much? WBW: I think people embraced Maja because she was an amazing reminder that anyone and everyone can do good in the world. People loved hearing the PALS stories when she went volunteering. I think people have embraced Cash for different reasons, as he is full of mischief and adventure. People love to laugh and

MIND BODY SOUL SPIRIT Cash makes them laugh almost daily. HPJ: Did anything surprise you about the standard poodle breed? WBW: How smart and gentle they are, and truthfully how good looking they are. According to social media, Cash gives me a run for my money in the looks department. HPJ: How do you keep Cash healthy? WBW: Cash goes for a walk twice a day for upwards of an hour each time, as well as his walk to and from the office. The mornings I work out you can catch him in the gym with me, he loves to wrestle and help me with my sit ups. HPJ: Does Cash have any interesting quirks? WBW: He loves to play catch by himself for upwards of 20 minutes at a time. After Cash drinks he is known to come lay his soaking wet whiskers on your lap! HPJ: Is Cash an outdoorsy dog or urban pooch? WBW: I would have to say outdoorsy. He loves to go for walks, hikes and spending time puttering around the cabin with me. Cash also loves shallow water, and is always doing what I call the ‘Poodle Prance’. HPJ: What’s Cash’s favourite toy? WBW: His soccer ball. He has one at the office and house. He can amuse himself for a long time just throwing the ball up in the air and catching. It’s fun to watch.

Cash loves: Kids, probably because he is a kid himself. Cash won’t eat: Salmon, like me. If Cash was a celebrity he would be: Garfield.

Cash has taught me: Patience. I have taught Cash: That consistency means love.

There’s Healing Magic in Therapeutic Pets Every person who has a cat or a dog, or a ferret or a bunny, or goldfish or budgie, knows how much better they feel after spending time with their beloved pets. There is a clearly established scientific basis for this improvement in mood. Human interaction with companion animals leads to the release of neurotransmitters known as endorphins. These chemicals work inside our minds and bodies to calm us, lower our blood pressure and even diminish our experience of physical pain. In recognition of Global Pet Foods’ expansion into western Canada, we highlight one impressive Pet Therapy group called PALS (Pet Access League Society). Based in Calgary, Alberta PALS has more than 450 volunteers from the ages of 18 - 80+. PALS volunteers bring all types of domestic animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, even miniature ponies into hospitals, nursing homes, correctional facilities, group homes and other care facilities. This human-animal interaction can be tremendously therapeutic for human suffering.

In recent years, the therapeutic aspect of human-animal contact has been put into action to aid in the care of people dealing with the entire spectrum of physical and mental health issues. Elderly patients may suffer from loneliness, depression or dementia; the presence of a companion animal lessens these burdens. People experiencing serious mental health issues can be drawn out of their shell or aided in attaining calmness. Children undergoing major operations or confronting lifethreatening illness can have their anxiety and their pain lessened, simultaneously. Therapeutic pet organizations like PALS exist across our great nation, and their numbers are growing. The Global Pet Foods family encourages you to get involved in your local community. Since the demand for these types of services are ever-increasing, so too is the need for volunteers of the two and four-footed variety. It feels good to know that there is a little bit of healing magic in therapeutic pets. PHONE: 403-250-PALS (7257) EMAIL: info@palspets.com

Fall & Winter Transitions – seasonal problems and solutions for your canine Now that summer is but a distant memory, the changing seasons means that we have to modify things with our companion pets. Here are some common problems and a few solutions that become present during the changing of the seasons. Problem: Activity levels change for dogs due to back-toschool routines, shorter daylight hours, and cooler weather. Solutions: Adjust dogs’ feeding amounts to accommodate less physical activity to avoid weight gain; coats, collars, and leashes are important to bring out for evening walks; also use Spotlights or Reflective lights when walking at night so that people and cars see you. Salt and ice can bother your dog’s paws. If your dog has longer hair around his paws, snowballs can form, which make it uncomfortable for him to walk. Protect your pet’s pads with foot protection. There are lots of options available at your local Global Pet Foods store, from traditional boots with a vinyl sole like Muttluks to multi-use disposable and biodegradable boots like Pawz. For yearround paw protection check out balms like Dr. Maggie’s Paw Protector. Problem: Dry Skin/Scaly issues arise due to the drier and cooler weather. Symptoms include: dry, flaking skin; irritation; loss of hair; dry, dull coat; lumps or bumps on or under the skin; red, scaly, or scabby patches; excessive licking and scratching.

Solutions: There are a few things that can help alleviate skin problems: Change your dog’s diet to a food that provides a richer source of Omegas, add fish oil (Omegas 3-6) to their diet, use topical conditioners on affected areas. Speak to your Global Pet Foods nutritional expert for recommendations for an appropriate food or supplements that can help to alleviate the symptoms. Problem: Some breeds have a seasonal shedding season in the spring, as their winter coats are lost. Then, when the winter rolls around, the dogs shed a second time to remove the summer coat and grow their winter coat. Some dogs shed a lot. What can you do to help get the hair loss under control? Solutions: Grooming is the key. The more hair you remove the less you will see it all over your house. Brushing your dog once a day will greatly reduce the unwanted hair all over your clothes, carpet and furniture, especially during shedding seasons. Ensure that you complete a full brush-out of your dog’s coat to get rid of any loose fur and bathe the dog prior to the dog’s undercoat for the winter begins to grow in. It is not normal for your dog’s coat to thin as the dog gets older. If your dog's hair loss is abnormal you will see bald spots. If you see bald spots or you think your dog is shedding abnormally, it is recommended that you take your dog to the vet.
